Restaurants TITL Voice Your Expand Opinion On What Citrus Connection International Should Go In Munn Test Extends Hours Options In Buses Run Park E Lakeland The instant-analysis feedback loop of Facebook went into overdrive when Lakeland’s Downtown Development Authority suggested putting a carousel in the center of Munn Park as a draw for families. Residents will be able to express their opinions in person on what they’d like to see in Munn Park when the LDDA holds a public meeting/community conversation at the park on April 29 from 11 a.m to 8 p.m.

Local buses will run later in the evening and earlier in the morning under a pilot project getting under way. Lakeland riders have asked the Citrus Connection to increase their options for getting to and from work. The tradeoff under the Re-Route 2020 plan is that some buses will run less frequently at mid-day. In addition, some routes are being consolidated, and color names will replace numbers.

City Commission Race Has Attracted Five Candidates

Unwanted Distinction: DUI Downtown Garage Deaths Have Construction Is Increased in About to Start Lakeland

The next city election doesn’t take place until November, but one race has already attracted five candidates. That’s the race for the at-large City Commission seat currently held by Justin Troller, who has reached term limits. Candidates so far are public relations expert Chad McLeod, retired hospital executive Carole Philipson, tow service owner Ricky Shirah, educator Shandale Terrell, and entrepreneur Pablo Sologaistoa.

Kentucky Avenue will close between Orange Street and Lemon Street starting May 1 for construction of the five-story Heritage Plaza parking garage, the city of Lakeland has announced. The closure is expected to last until the end of 2019. The 824-space downtown garage is a joint venture between the city of Lakeland, Lakeland Regional Health Systems, MidFlorida Credit Union and BKP Five LLC.

New and announced restaurants are bringing an international palette of flavors to local palates. New: Puerto Rican holiday tastes at Antojitos Navideños on Robin Road and treats from Turkey at Berna’s Turkish Coffee House on South Florida Avenue. Announced: Latin fusion Nineteen61 is planning a move to the former home of Posto 9 downtown, and Curry Mango will fuse delicacies of India with American favorites near Mulberry.

The number of DUI deaths has increased here in recent years, according to a new report that ranks Lakeland as second in drunken-driving fatalities among Florida’s larger cities. With 19 DUI deaths between 2015 and 2017, Lakeland saw 6.5 deaths a year per 100,000 residents, according to a report compiled by the financial site ValuePenguin. Sarasota topped the list at 12.2 deaths per 100k.

Sensors Are Already Collecting Travel Data On Florida Avenue

Misunderstanding Prompted Artist to Remove Outdoor Tapestry

It will probably be fall 2020 before transportation planners start a one-year test of a “road diet” on Florida Avenue, but they’re already collecting data. Eleven Bluetooth sensors are collecting speed and travel-time info in the Dixieland corridor. Traffic counters will be added as the city and state look at the impacts on safety, economic impact and impact on other roads as Florida Avenue’s five traffic lanes are reduced to three between Ariana and Lime streets.

The maxim that art is in the eye of the beholder was tested by a tapestry hanging on a downtown building. Artist Aaron Corbitt voluntarily removed his 7-by-9-foot “The Fall of Dionysus” after several complaints that the painting appeared to be satanic. Critics thought the art had an irreverent religious theme, but it actually depicted the artist’s own struggle with internal and psychological demons.

Lakeland Electric Looks at Closing Coal-Fired Plant

School Safety: City Hiring Four New Resource Officers

It’s probably time to close the 37-year-old, coal-fired McIntosh Unit 3 power plant and replace the lost power with a new natural gas plant and an expansion of solar, Lakeland Electric chief Joel Ivy told city commissioners recently. A decision on the power plant’s future is tentatively scheduled for May 6, but it will take several years to get a replacement up and running.

The city of Lakeland plans to hire four more school resource officers to ensure someone is providing security against the possibility of a gunman while the officer usually assigned to the school is investigating a crime on campus or is out sick or on vacation. The city will pay for the costs for the rest of the current school year, but is asking if the School Board will pay 75 percent of the officers’ salaries in future years.

A Look Inside the Top-Secret World of LEGO Models Magic is made daily in a nondescript building with locked doors and tinted windows on the outskirts of Lake Wales. This magic spans the world and some of it even stays right here in Polk County. If you’ve ever strolled DUPLO Valley, felt your stomach drop riding The Dragon, earned your license in Ford Jr. Driving School, or waged war in the Battle of Bricksburg at LEGOLAND Florida, you’ve probably stopped to admire the intricate detail of the many larger than life LEGO models of characters, people, animals, and places. Maybe you wondered – who spent the painstaking hours to piece these meticulous things together? How do they keep them from crumbling during a Florida storm or at the hands of a rowdy guest? Is it hollow or solid LEGO? Are they made at LEGOLAND? Merlin Entertainments, the company behind LEGOLAND Parks across the globe, makes their models in Merlin Magic Making (MMM) warehouses of which there are only four in the world. The largest MMM Production facility is in Malaysia, along with two smaller shops in England and Germany, with the second largest facility in Lake Wales, Florida. THE MAIN MAGIC MAN Overseeing the approximate 50-employee MMM in Lake Wales is US LEGO Model Production Manager, Brent Albritton. Albritton has been with Merlin for six months, bringing a seven-year background in production management including work in the retail display industry, 3D design, and graphic design with him. - CONTINUED ON PAGE 16 -

15

As Production Manager, Albritton’s job is to keep the facility running smoothly from day to day business operations to supervising production flow, ensuring projects stay on track with the help of the three supervisors under him – one each overseeing design, production, and the machine shop and animation department. Albritton has fully embraced his new position with Merlin. LEGO blueprints hang on a wall in his office, facing a sign with LEGO bricks of various shapes and colors with a quote from Van Gogh reading, ‘Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.’ What’s Brent Albritton’s favorite part of the job? It has to be playing with LEGO, right? Not exactly.

havenmagazines.com

“I have tried building. I have not been trained on it and they kicked me off the floor,” he laughed. No, the most fun he has is, “walking the floor, talking with everybody, and seeing the models come together.” BRICK BY BRICK The production manager detailed the model building process, which begins in the design department. MMM uses three pieces of software to design models. One is a 3D software, and the other two are LEGO proprietary software – LEGO Digital Designer and LEGO Brick Builder. “In the software, they have all the LEGO parts and can assemble and design a sculpture,” he explained.

16

The idea moves to the animation department where any needed lighting, animatronics, or internal steel structures are determined. Next, it’s off to the brick builders. “They start from the ground up. They’ll lay a footprint down following the software, counting the number of studs on top of the LEGO bricks or however the actual file is built,” he said. He described the actual building process as similar to laying the brick of a home, it goes layer by layer. The models are mostly hollow, saving on the weight of the piece and number of bricks they’ll need to use. Bracing inside the models hold them together with steel structures added for larger models or those that

might be in guest contact. To stick the LEGO bricks together, they use a solution that essentially “welds” them to one another. Large tubes, part of an extraction system, run throughout the facility, humming as they remove any fumes from the solution. What about sun damage? “Weather is probably the biggest factor,” said Albritton. “We’re taking an indoor toy and using it outside. The weather, especially here in Florida, is pretty brutal on it. The colors fade, the rain beats down.” Models that will be on display outdoors are sprayed with a UV coat of lacquer that seals them for longevity.

Upon completion, the models are strapped onto pallets or crated if necessary to be delivered to its destination. If a model needs to be repaired, there are onsite repair teams at the parks. A damaged part can be cut out and replaced, with color from sun fade taken into account. If a model becomes overall worse for the ware, they can be sent back to MMM for refurbishment. WHERE DO THEY GO? There are LEGOLAND Discovery Centers across the world and LEGOLAND Parks in Denmark, England, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Dubai, California, and Florida, with construction underway in New York

expected to open in 2020. The Lake Wales MMM location builds models not only for LEGOLAND Florida but any of the LEGOLAND Parks and Discovery Centers. They work on around 30 models for two to three parks at any given time creating models from just a few inches tall to over 20 feet. PLAYING WITH LEGO FOR A LIVING To stock these locations with magic, it takes an organized facility filled with people from different backgrounds working together.

- CONTINUED ON PAGE 18 -

17

About whether MMM employees come from design or other creative backgrounds, Albritton said, “Many of them do, yes. A lot of people here were just LEGO fanatics for years as kids.” Now in adulthood they are called AFoLs (Adult Fans of LEGO). A range of personalities spans the building according to Albritton. From locals to commuters, some come with degrees from Full Sail University, a retired police officer, some straight out of high school, former marines or aircraft mechanics, designers, engineers, some with machinist and carpentry background. One thing all employees have to adhere to though is a confidentiality policy. No unreleased models can be photographed or posted on social media.

havenmagazines.com

MMM TOUR We took a walk through the facility. Designers were working diligently with earphones in as they built within their 3D programs, a LEGO Pokeball sat on one desk, a LEGO banana on another. We passed weathered models that were there for refurbishment before entering the large production floor. A LEGO moose head hung on the front wall overlooking the brick builders. New hires were doing training at a table behind someone putting down the footprint for a project, as a man adjacent to her worked on a time-lapse of the building process.

18

Blue bins filled with every color and shape of LEGO imaginable ran the center of the room. Their full machine shop was complete with a lathe, welding machine, mill, and various tools for metalworking and animation. In a storage space sat completed models ready to be packed and shipped, around the corner from the prep and paint area for models waiting to be UV coated. I left thinking these guys might have one of the coolest jobs ever. The next time you walk MINILAND USA or LEGO Movie World and see a model, you’ll know just how a series of small things came together to make something great.

ARTS WORDS Lauren Dickman

ARTWORK Kristina Stafford

Pink Moon Showcases Lakeland’ s Female Artists Lakeland’s art scene has seen some considerable growth over the last year. Residents have likely noticed a surge in public art, either in the form of David Collin’s Tapestries project or in the form of a few permanent murals commissioned by the City of Lakeland. Two groups, the VOLUME Art Collective and the Lakeland Women’s Collective, are taking advantage of and facilitating that change. “I truly believe these women are movers and shakers, and that they’ll be responsible for a lot of positive change in Lakeland,” says VOLUME Art Collective member Sunny Lynne. April’s Pink Moon event showcased female artists in and around the Lakeland area, centering on the concept of the Divine Feminine. The idea for the show was first conceived by the Lakeland Women’s Collective all the way back in January of 2018. They knew they wanted to curate a women’s art showcase with the VOLUME Art Collective, but timing for the event was important. When the LWC discovered that April’s full moon would be a pink moon, they knew that pairing the show with the celestial event would add an extra layer of depth. As it turns out, selecting a date is the easy part. Once a date for the event has been solidified, it’s onto curating, advertising, and hanging, among a host of other responsibilities. Sunny says that the secret to getting it all done, though, is having purpose and people. The two groups both had the same goal: creating an opportunity for local female artists. This clear direction helped guide their decision-making and gave their show a purpose. VOLUME and the LWC had the support of ARTifact, a local studio and gallery space for artists in Lakeland, as well as support from all participating artists, bands, and vendors who appeared at the show. The group effort is part of what made the whole show a success. Before getting to any of the stages of planning and organizing, however, artists must first submit work to be selected. Every show has different rules about what is or is not allowed, and many times those rules center on a theme. For the Pink Moon show, eligibility centered on theme (divine feminine) and the basis that the artists identified as women. Each female artist was encouraged to create work centered on her interpretation of the divine feminine. Because the theme was so open-ended, the show

havenmagazines.com

received a wide range of submissions - over 130 pieces - that showcased each individual’s take on the divine feminine.

acted as an opportunity to meditate and release the limiting beliefs that can hold us back from reaching our full potential, creatively or otherwise.

“I don’t think we anticipated how difficult it would be to choose the art that is being shown,” LWC member Ileah Green claimed.

Pink Moon also partnered with Hello Flo, Laura Davis’ organization dedicated to providing feminine products to underserved communities in Lakeland. Because the show was designed to support local women, this partnership was only natural. Attendees could bring feminine hygiene products to donate to Hello Flo at the show, but the organization is always accepting donations. Information can be found on their Facebook page.

According to Ileah, the first round of selections took 5 hours. Because the space in ARTifact is limited, the selection group had to be small. In the end, after a lot of deliberation, around 30 pieces were chosen to be exhibited. For many of these artists, this was their first time showing work. Despite there being only 30 or so pieces shown, no two were alike. Some of the work is painted in a traditional style, such as Gianna Santucci’s largescale painting of Jesus and Simon-Peter as women. Ruth Bolles entered a piece of work depicting a woman’s figure growing out of a tree of life. For this, she used stained glass, a medium that has a history of being used in churches, not necessarily gallery spaces. The exhibition also showcases sculpture. Diane Baires’ steel wool baby carriage and high heel shoe made of nails are just two examples of the 3D work found at the show. In addition to artwork, Pink Moon also hosted local vendors, as well as live art, music, and spoken word. Vendors included Pin and Needle, Olive + Lemon, Savannah’s Sunshine Flowers, Goth Bombs, and Sam Caban. Ileah mentioned that keeping the vendors to a minimum was important, though, because they really wanted people to buy local art. “Art shows are either seen as stuffy, hokey, or ‘out there.’” Sunny claims, “so our intention is to make art feel accessible without compromising the integrity of the work.” Pink Moon’s solution to this problem was to feature live entertainment that stuck to the theme of the show. In this case, the live entertainment was provided by women and functioned as an extension of the visual art that was showcased. As Ileah stated, “the divine feminine has so many interpretations,” so giving the people who connect more with performing arts a chance to present their point of view as well only made sense. One of the most unique factors about the show was the full moon ritual at the end of the night. The ritual

Both the Lakeland Women’s Collective and the VOLUME Art Collective hope that audiences walked away from the show with a new respect for the talent Lakeland’s female artists have. It was the first show of its kind in Lakeland, and it is likely to inspire more events like it. Another show like this one is already in the works for next year. Until then, Lakelanders are encouraged to find other ways to support local artists and help the local art community to grow.

The Bike Shown‘Round the World With his first build, out of a one-car garage in Lakeland, Brian Buttera has carved out a reputation for himself as a world-class custom motorcycle builder – something he, as of recently, gets to do full-time. Buttera moved to Lakeland when he was six. In 6th grade, he moved to Las Vegas, returning to Lakeland during his senior year of high school. He and his fiancé, Tina Watson live in Lakeland, the couple owns The Copper Penny Salon. Everything he explored as a career out of high school seemed to always lead back to welding and fabrication. He honed his craft and moved up the fabrication ladder throughout the years, eventually becoming Plant manager for a large metal fabrication plant on the east coast. He worked there, making the 160-mile round trip to Sarasota every day until a few years ago when he took a job as a commercial construction superintendent. Until this month, that is – when he begins waking up every morning to put his craftsmanship and creativity to its best use. DEADLINER The Handbuilt Motorcycle Show happened to be going on while the couple was vacationing in Austin. That show was the deciding factor for Buttera that it was time to give himself a deadline and build something. It took about a year from start to finish. Over that year, in a single car garage, he put all of his will and focus and creativity into his bike – a 1977 (his birth year) Harley Davidson Motor encased in polished stainless steel. His deadline was Bike Week in Daytona and he worked on it right up to the wire, finishing the last few details the morning they left for the show. His bike, Deadliner, as named by the editor of Cycle Source Magazine, was in four shows in Daytona Bike Week – winning all four. From there he did a series of invitational exhibition shows before moving on to Sturgis where Buttera entered his bike in another three shows – again winning all three. The final show in Sturgis won him an invitation to a show in Zurich, Switzerland. “Unexpectedly, we won Best of Show there,” he said. That win landed him an invitation to Abu Dhabi. He was the first American to be invited to that show. Buttera and Deadliner walked away with Best in Show, Best in Class, and Best Paint. The show was huge – showcasing bikes, cars, dune buggies and the like. Though traveling across the world was a

havenmagazines.com

little intimidating, he described it as, “an amazing experience, everyone was super nice and respectful and welcoming.” “To see the diversity and how much they put into their shows and how grandiose it is compared to some of ours was pretty amazing,” said Buttera. The world sat up and took notice of Buttera’s craftsmanship. Aside from the numerous awards, Buttera received acclaim for Deadliner in the press as well. He was 2018 Cycle Source Builder of the Year and his bike made it on the cover of Iron Horse Magazine, Special Collector’s Issue.

Along with that project is a 1973 Harley motor and bike that he has torn down to be completely rebuilt and customized. With builds so distinctive and intricate, Buttera must have some sort of a plan going into the design, right? Not exactly. According to Buttera, there are certain aspects of a motorcycle that are constants, that have to be precise. “Once that’s fulfilled, then it turns into art,” he said. He combines the practicality of the piece with his wild imagination and sets to work, saying, “With motorcycles especially, they’re functioning pieces of art. Going down the road at 50, 60 miles an hour, everything has to be right.”

BUTTERA’S METAL WERX

DON’T STOP

Because of the opportunities his first bike afforded him, Brian’s business, Buttera’s Metal Werx will now be his full-time gig. He started the business officially about 5 years ago to put a brand to what he does. Working on custom motorcycles is his priority and passion. Buttera said, “A lot of motorcycle builders don’t build their own frames and front ends truly from the ground up. I take a lot of pride in doing that.”

Over the years, there’s a sentiment Tina has heard Brian say consistently – that there was just one thing he wanted, and that was to be doing what he loves every day, working for himself.

Selling high-end completely custom bikes can be a tough market though. To supplement his passion, Buttera does other welding and fabrication projects from industrial furniture which can be seen in the pieces he’s done for The Copper Penny, and other parts and components. “Pretty much if it’s metal, I can make it for you,” he said. CURRENT AND UPCOMING PROJECTS Buttera isn’t a one bike wonder – the skillset he’s built over the years has lent him the ability to be both consistent and diverse in his work. Buttera has moved from that one car garage to a private shop of his own behind his home. He is about 80% finished with a bike he had sitting in his shop, made from the same polished stainless steel as the Deadliner, though the two are vastly different bikes. This bike will debut at the Sturgis Rally exhibition which has invited builders from around the world to show. This year’s theme is “What’s the Skinny: Motorcycling without the Fat.” Pointing to an older motor, Buttera said, “This is an all-original running 1914 Indian motor – a pretty rare and historic piece.” This one he received from his friend Billy Lane who does the Sons of Speed Vintage Motorcycle Race. “I’m going to build a period correct bike around that to race,” he said.

22

Now, staring that dream in the face, Buttera says, “It’s not my first attempt at it. I first tried to do a motorcycle shop going on twenty years ago – long before I was ready skill-wise or maturity-wise. There have been a lot of failures to get to this point.” He now receives emails and messages from people who work out of their garage and hope to be where he is one day, asking for advice. “That kind of hits home,” said Buttera. “Because I was that guy sitting there dreaming for a long time.” Without hesitation, he said, “My advice is don’t stop.” Buttera’s Metal Werx FB: Brian Buttera IG: butteras_metal_werx Email: B_Buttera@yahoo.com

Peebles Bar-B-Q A fixture in Auburndale for over 70 years, Peebles BarB-Q has fed generations of Polk County families. If you ask lifelong customers, they’ll tell you it’s more than the bar-b-q that makes Peebles a local tradition.

Peebles is closed July and August to refresh, repair, and repaint the building.

But, it’s also because of the family that’s been created through this culinary connection.

THE MEAT OF THE MATTER

Though it was 3 o’clock, a time you’d expect any restaurant to be in a lull, Peebles had a steady stream of customers arriving to pick up take-out orders along with diners sharing stories over a good meal.

Pork ribs, chopped pork, sliced beef, baked beans, coleslaw, and potato salad were the only items on the original menu. The eatery has evolved over its seven decades of operation while staying close to its roots – and keeping those coveted family recipes intact.

“We’ve got a great customer base,” said Dale. “When they don’t show up, we call them.”

The scent of savory smoke pervaded the restaurant – a small enclosed structure only separated from the outside by mesh screen windows. A sporadic breeze brought some cooling relief along with a new waft of appetizing smells from the bar-b-q pit which opens into the dining room, as Dale Strickland sat down to tell the Peebles story. 4 GENERATIONS OF HISTORY Dale and Marsha Strickland are the current owners of the bar-b-q hot spot. According to Dale, in 1947 Ellie and Gladys Peebles lived in a house next door to what is now, the current restaurant. At that time, people would bring Ellie meat and he’d cook it in his carport for them to take home. He eventually put picnic tables in the yard so folks could enjoy their meal beneath the generous shade of Australian pines. In the early 1950s, the Peebles built the original building where the restaurant now stands. They continued serving up the best hometown bar-b-q around out of that structure until the late 1960’s when they expanded, adding on the sides and front. When Mr. Peebles passed away, his sons Jerry and Ronnie took on the family business. In 1981 Dale Strickland, husband of Marsha Peebles Strickland joined the Peebles brothers in running the establishment and eventually took it over in 2010. Peebles Bar-B-Q has seen four generations of the family carrying on the torch. Today, three generations work there. Dale and Marsha are joined by their daughters Erica and Jessica, Erica’s daughter Hannah, along with cousins and people who’ve worked there so long they have become part of the family. Only open weekly, Thursday through Saturday, Dale explained, “As I understand it, Mr. Peebles when he originally opened it, was a custodian and a school bus driver for the school system. When he was off work there, he’d work here. Originally I think it was open Saturday and Sunday.” They didn’t want to be open on Sunday’s so they changed their days to Friday and Saturday, and when the brothers joined on, Thursday was added. Don’t be fooled, three-day weeks don’t mean an easy job. “There’s a lot of hours in those three days,” said Dale of the time that goes into preparing and smoking their county-famous fare. havenmagazines.com

The menu now includes more meat and side options as well as a dessert addition of banana pudding and monthly specials. Ribs and chopped pork continue to be patron favorites. It could be argued that North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas run the gamut on bar-b-q with their individual takes on the southern culinary custom. Many bar-b-q restaurants find their stride by putting their twist on an homage to one of these states – not Peebles. When asked just what kind of bar-b-q is served up at the family-owned Americana eatery, Dale replied, “It’s Auburndale bar-b-q.” “I’d say it’s the old time bar-b-q,” he added. There is no gas involved in the cooking process. All of their meat is smoked over 99.9% Oak wood with Hickory and Pecan occasionally added to the pile. They don’t fuss over the meat either. The meat’s natural juicy flavor and smoky cooking method do the talking at Peebles. Ribs are seasoned only with salt while other meats have no seasonings while cooking. The only thing you’ll find sauce in that you didn’t add yourself is their chopped pork which is seasoned and finished off with bar-b-q sauce. The over 70-year old recipes and methods are so finger-licking good that the restaurant has a history of celebrity regulars. George Jones, Tammy Wynette, and Bernie Little were said to frequent it in the past along with visitors like Rosey Grier, Ricky Skaggs, and Red Skelton. Oh, what’s that? A secret menu item? “We also have sliced pork which is not even on the menu, you’ve got to know about that,” revealed Dale. Order it up the next time you stop in for a bite to eat! FOOD AND FAMILY Peebles seems to have captured some long lost nostalgic wonder for all those who have eaten there throughout the years. A usual customer, Keith, who comes every few weeks, says that his appreciation for Peebles comes from, “Knowing the people – it’s been here for a long time. It’s a family atmosphere, laid back, and the food’s really good too.” “People come here because it’s the old way,” posited Strickland. 24

That’s his favorite part of the job is going from table to table, visiting with old friends and making new ones. As we talked, a gentleman walked up and joked, “Don’t believe too much he’d tell you!” Dale retorted with a laugh, “Don’t believe anything he’d say!” The two, clearly old friends, exchanged niceties and the man explained that he was in his early eighties and has been coming to Peebles since he was just 10 years old. The people behind the pit also make up the heart of the establishment. People like Carla who has worked at Peebles for close to 18 years according to Erica, Jenny who has been with them for 35 years, and Lori for 10 years. Erica said, “If something happens we grieve together, we celebrate together. It’s like a big family.” WHO NEEDS A FORK? Dale served up a fine representation of what Peebles is all about – chopped pork, sausage, chopped chicken, and beef, with a side of sliced pork. Served on a paper plate, which is arguably the best way to enjoy bar-b-q, the meat was melt-in-my-mouth tasty. On the table was their dark molasses-hued sweet bar-b-q sauce and signature original bar-b-q sauce. Next to be tried were the ribs. We started out with forks like the dainty ladies that we are, but bar-b-q, especially ribs, are meant to be eaten messily. So, pinkies up, we tore into the ridiculously tender ribs which were complete with the occasional crunch from a tasty charred bit that had accrued from being in the smoke pit. The meats were joined by the usual southern accouterments – potato salad, mac and cheese, coleslaw, and baked beans which were all just as good, if not better than Grandma’s cooking (don’t tell her I said that). If Peebles isn’t already a cult favorite in your household, check out their friendly, informal atmosphere and out of this world bar-b-q. Free Art! With pen in hand, Josh ‘Bump’ Galletta fought his way from the depths of trauma and wielded his gift to draw a future for himself and his family.

and hide it for someone else to find. He pulled inspiration from Banksy’s street art and skateboarder Tony Hawk who, according to Bump, would leave any free merch he received in a public place as a gift to a stranger. “I like to mix both of those together in my own way and hide my art somewhere with a sign that says, ‘Free Art!’ on it,” he explained.

next to his for the kids where they’ll do watercolors or portraits. He smiled, “There were sometimes when they made more money than I did at the market selling these little $3 paintings.”

Prior to his life as a full-time illustrator, Bump was a youth pastor for twenty years which brought him to Lakeland eleven years ago.

One of the first pieces he drew and hid after the accident was a pair of robots. A fan of Norman Rockwell, Bump drew the vintage robots in the same pose as the subjects of Rockwell’s iconic “Boy and Girl Gazing at the Moon (Puppy Love).” He continues to hide his free art locally and in the places he travels.

When he doesn’t have a pen to paper, Bump likes to collect records and spend time with his family. From the beach to the mountains or a bike ride to Born & Bread, they are always on the go. He founded and continues to be involved with the LKLD Creative Makers, a networking group for creatives.

THE ACCIDENT

(ART)REPRENEUR

Eight years ago, on a day trip to visit family in Jacksonville, Bump, who had taken up cycling in the months prior, took a bike ride that would change the trajectory of his life. Towards the end of that 8-mile ride, he was struck by a car that threw him twenty-five feet and in the confusion of the moment, the driver backed over him. His injuries were serious. “They were trying to keep me alive at the scene,” he remembered.

After the prints came shirts, mugs, hats, and commissioned work. His business built steadily from a “side hustle” to his bread and butter. Bump continued to work in the ministry until May of 2018 when he stepped away to pursue illustration full time. His portfolio is full of monochromatic sunshine state pride, inside jokes, and commissions of families, houses, pet portraits, album art, maps, patent designs, and commercial work.

Another passion project is his podcast, “Low Down with Bump.” From his friends to makers, movers and shakers, Bump has interviewed the likes of Mayor Bill Mutz, Nicole Travis with the CRA, LKLD Now’s Barry Friedman, and others. “I get inspired by other people so it’s just my way of sharing stories I really like,” Bump said of the podcast.

In shock, with paramedics trying to keep him conscious, all Bump worried about was making sure the nicest officer available would tell his wife. Mary was eight and a half months pregnant at the time and he feared the news might send her into early labor. The accident kept him in the hospital for a month, including several weeks in the ICU. “It changed our lives,” he said.

For Bump and Mary, success didn’t come overnight. It was a hidden drawing here, a pop-up market there, a resolve of steel to keep going, and the support of family and community that propelled the venture. It was at one of these markets that modern furniture and home decor store, West Elm, approached him about carrying his products. Incredulous at first, Bump met with West Elm. They didn’t just want him for one store – they wanted Bump Galletta in all of their Florida stores. “To be there on their shelves now, it’s really cool,” Bump said. “You know how you daydream sometimes, but you never think this is going to be a reality?” He reflected, “It’s funny how it went from something that was therapy and to cope to now it’s providing for our family.”

Bump met his wife, Mary, at a summer camp in Georgia, where they’re both from. The couple’s seventeenth anniversary is coming up and through the almost two decades of their union, their love has endured. This is reflected in the way Bump talks about Mary and in their two beautiful kids, Emmersyn and Fynn.

FREE ART! In the months following the accident, Bump sought counseling after he learned he had PTSD. His counselor told him to find something he loved, put everything he had into it, and then release it. For Bump, this was drawing. This hobby he had loved since childhood was going to be the way he would release all of the pain, and anxiety, and flashbacks, and trauma. Galletta has been drawing his whole life. Doodles of tv characters and action heroes filled the pages of school notebooks and he began freelancing his art and illustrations as a teenager. Because of his connection to art, his interpretation of his counselor’s advice was to draw a picture that he loved

havenmagazines.com

CREATIVITY RUNS IN THE FAMILY Fynn and Emmersyn also have a knack for the creative. Bump’s son likes to take things apart and build, and his daughter is trying her hand at everything from sewing to calligraphy. “They both have a creative element, but they also have an entrepreneur about them,” said Bump. At some of the markets he attends, he’ll set up a table

BEYOND THE INK

His past in youth ministry has given him a heart for volunteerism. He has given his time and talent for organizations like Parker Street and Gospel Inc. “I like to choose my give-back because I feel like I’ve been given a second chance,” he said. Check out his website to purchase his work, find a list of stores that carry them, and sign up for his newsletter. Making Life Better for Others The arts have been a fundamental part of Executive Director and Chief Curator at the Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College, Claire Orologas’ life since childhood. “My mother was a ballet dancer. Our house was always filled with music. My father had a wonderful voice,” she remembers. Claire was born and raised in Warren, Ohio in a portion of the state known as the “Steel Belt.” After living in Greece for a few years, the family moved to the St. Petersburg/ Clearwater area in the 1970s. She grew up in the Greek Orthodox Church surrounded by Byzantine art and said of her time spent living in Greece, “I was able to experience the rich artistic history of Greece first hand. It was incredibly inspiring.” Her profession comes honestly to Orologas. Not only were her grandparents “gifted in creative endeavors,” a relative on her maternal grandmother’s side was the amateur archaeologist to first discover the Minoan ruins of Knossos in Crete. “Sadly, all of his records and specimens were destroyed in an uprising against the Ottomans, but he is given credit for his work before Sir Arthur Evans carried out the important excavations for which he is so well known,” she explained. At Miami of Ohio, Claire studied studio art (drawing and painting) and art education. She went on to receive her master’s degree at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Orologas later pursued her graduate studies in art history while working in the curatorial department at the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida. THE RIGHT FIT Claire Orologas has been the Executive Director and Chief Curator for the Polk Museum of Art (PMA) for just over seven years. She received a call about the position while working at the Smithsonian’s Freer and Sackler Galleries in Washington DC. Claire said, “I had been thinking about moving closer to my family by that time, but I also wanted the position and the institution to be the right fit. It certainly has been.” Her job entails a little bit of everything – financial management, program guidance and oversight, staff support, fundraising, donor cultivation, strategic

havenmagazines.com

planning and management, working with their Boards, advocacy and community relations. Claire explained her delight with her career, saying, “There is nothing like working with the right people in a productive and healthy work culture that is focused on making life better for others.”

out by Americans for the Arts and the Polk Arts Alliance last year, Orologas explained that the arts generate $46,589,847 in Polk County annually.

Also impactful to the executive director is seeing the mission of “making life better for others” be carried out through visual arts. Claire elaborated, “When I see people become curious, moved, thrilled by, learn from, or somehow affected in ways that are expansive and meaningful through their engagement with works of art and our programs, that is what means the most to me.” One example of this was an exhibition at the museum years ago about the passage of time. A couple sat and observed the exhibition knowing that the husband didn’t have long to live. A poignant story, Claire said, “They shared that experience with me and it was beautiful.”

Engagement in the arts leads to higher graduation rates, general academic achievement, and greater development to “creatively work through problems, and are better prepared for the workforce,” she explained. “It is also important to acknowledge that the arts are unique in stimulating the kind of curiosity in us that helps us learn; helps us to expand our understanding of the world; challenges us to reconsider deeply seeded assumptions; moves us, and makes us more empathetic toward one another – all of which strengthen our society,” said Orologas.

The museum recently had a program based on the exhibition SUN + LIGHT, Charles Edward Williams’ works based on the civil rights mug shots of the Freedom Riders. “It was incredible to experience personally, but also to observe our visitors taking in what the artwork meant and the experiences that the Freedom Riders went through to create a more just society for everybody,” she said. OUTSIDE OF THE MUSEUM When she isn’t curating an exhibit or managing the museum, Claire loves driving back roads, hiking, and clearing brush and planting gardens at her family home in rural North Central Florida. She says, “One day I’d like a couple of donkeys, some chickens, and probably some goats to keep the brush on our property in check.” She also loves exploring Greece and is interested in “issues of leadership and workplace culture.” ART, THE ECONOMY, AND EDUCATION The arts aren’t just stimulating and enjoyable, they are vital. They have a direct impact on the local economy and education says the PMA executive director. Citing an economic impact study carried

The return on investment of the arts in Polk County is $9 to $1 return to local and state treasuries.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WOULD LIKE THE COMMUNITY TO KNOW ABOUT PMA? “Everyone is welcome, and thanks to the generosity of our Strategic Partners, there is no charge for admission. I know our community is proud of our museum. What I would like everyone to know is that those who visit from outside our community recognize something very special about it too. From museum professionals to artists who work with us, they see a quality and a caring that they believe to be rare. That comes from our team and our entire community.” HOW CAN PEOPLE SUPPORT THE MUSEUM? Claire says, “Become members. Give through sponsorships and annual appeals as you are able. Businesses can partner with us to attract greater tourism. Attend exhibitions and programs. Vote for leaders who commit to funding the arts. Advocate. Volunteer. Remember us in your estate planning. Introduce friends and neighbors to the Museum and all we offer. Take a class.”

There Is Hope The Friends of Tri-County 2019 City of Lakeland Bill Mutz and Pamela Mutz fundraising event was held on April 2, at Haus 820, where guest speaker Sheriff Grady Judd addressed the crowd to talk statistics and solutions to homelessness, mental health, and substance abuse within the jail system. “Statistics show that the nation’s prisons and jail systems are in fact the largest mental health facilities in the nation,” said the sheriff. “They do not belong in the county jail. They belong in treatment centers that can help them.” A program aimed to tackle these issues is a Polk County Jail transition project called Helping Hands. According to Tri-County Human Services CEO, Robert ‘Bob’ Rihn, “Tri-County works with law enforcement through the Helping Hands Program which works in partnership with other community agencies and the EMS department.” The supervisor of the TCHS program, Peers on My Team, Denise Harrison also spoke at the event. Her team works with Helping Hands to support individuals in the program on a peer level, and Denise herself has quite the compelling story to tell. DENISE’S STORY An articulate, well-put-together woman with a millionwatt smile, you wouldn’t know by looking at her that she was once an IV methamphetamine user whose life was crumbling beneath her. You wouldn’t know that this person who now helps others struggling with addiction, had to once ask for help herself. “It didn’t take me long to go from a drug user to a drug supplier,” she said. A Marchman Act by her family and DCF removing her child from her care motivated Harrison to get into treatment. Outpatient didn’t work for Denise. “I needed to be removed from the environment, I needed to be removed from the people, I needed to be in a structured environment in order to begin the recovery process,” she said. Tri-County recommended she go to RASUW Center for Women and eventually AGAPE House. It was at these inpatient treatment programs that she began to learn how to address traumas that had plagued her childhood and affected her so deeply later on if life. She is now a big proponent of trauma-informed care. She was introduced to 12 Step Recovery and became involved with Narcotics Anonymous, she still attends meetings today. March 18, 2003, is her sobriety date. Denise was released from AGAPE, got her child back, and hit the ground running to rebuild her life. She began her career at TCHS on April 4, 2006. Harrison is the Lead Certified Recovery Peer Specialist. She is certified through the state as peer support for substance abuse and mental health. “I’m the supervisor

havenmagazines.com

of Peers on My Team. We work with a program called Helping Hands. We go into the jails, identify those individuals who are ready to start making some changes. Our job as peers is to support them through that change,” said Harrison. When she was in recovery, Denise remembers feeling like no one understood what she was going through. “I didn’t think they got it,” she said. “They didn’t understand what it’s like to use against your will.” Being in a peer position as someone who has struggled with addiction makes Denise’s job a little easier as is a point of connection with the people she works with. Her job has its struggles though. Seeing people who are not ready to quit is probably the biggest one. She remarked that you can give someone every resource and do everything to help them, but, “If they’re not ready, they are going to continue to self-destruct.” Even in these situations, she continues to “plant a seed of hope” and hope it grows. Inversely, there are many rewarding aspects to what Harrison does. She is particularly fulfilled by, “seeing people who believed that they didn’t deserve a better life – become employed, get a home, become self-sufficient and build themselves up.” Denise credits TCHS for being on the front end of this movement for peers across the state. “Bob Rihn has worked diligently to [implement] a “no wrong door” policy,” she said, adding that every program and department work as a team. Her message to anyone struggling with substance abuse, “There is hope out there, you just have to reach out for it.” HOW IT ALL BEGAN We talked with CEO, Bob Rihn about TCHS’s origin, services, and impact. Beginning as a DUI and Outpatient Counselor/ Therapist for TCHS in 1989, Rihn later led the agency in Programs Development and eventually became CEO in 2001. According to Rihn, parents of a teenage son struggling with an alcohol problem sought out treatment in the area. With nothing available, they lobbied for the importance of treatment programs. The first program was developed in 1974 and operated under the Polk County Mental Health Board. “In the beginning, substance abuse programs were operated out of the local health department with an administrative office located in downtown Winter Haven in the Hill Building along with the Mental Health Board,” said Rihn. “Several community leaders were elected to the new Tri-County Alcoholism Rehabilitative Services. Mr. Carl Strang, prominent Winter Haven resident, became the Chairman of the new board. To assure good leadership,

32

some of the Mental Health Board members, thus, as an outcome was born ‘Tri-County Alcoholism Rehabilitative Services’ on October 22, 1976,” said Rihn. By November 14, 1997, it became clear that Alcoholism Rehabilitative Services did not cover all of the community’s needs and “Tri-County Human Services” as it is known today, was born. Today, TCHS offers an array of services to the community spanning three counties – Polk, Hardee, and Highlands. The organization employs over 300 people and saw 8,608 individuals utilizing their services in 2018, with 2019 on track to exceed the prior year’s census. A WIDE-RANGE OF SERVICES There is little gap in the issues TCHS has programs and treatment for. Their gamut of services is so far spread, there aren’t enough pages to do justice to the intricacies of each one and how they’ve affected those they serve. “I think most people know them through their work in substance abuse, but they do so much in regards to mental health in general,” said Dr. Berney Wilkinson about TCHS. Dr. Wilkinson, a Licensed Psychologist who specializes in pediatric psychology, neuropsychology, and forensic psychology with Psychological Associates of Central Florida, has been a TCHS board member for two years. Impressed by the level of reach that the organization has, Dr. Wilkinson said, “Even when I just think about the south counties – Highlands County and Hardee County – they (Tri-County) are just about the only provider for those areas. There are very few mental health and substance abuse providers in those counties.” Tri-County offers resources for women with substance abuse and mental health issues at RASUW Center for Women and AGAPE House. A similar program for men is New Beginning Men, which transitions them back into the community following incarceration. All three of these therapeutic communities not only address “skills necessary to maintain a drug-free lifestyle,” according to Rihn, but also teach skills development – finding employment and maintaining employment, budgeting and finances, and other life skills. The Florida Center for Addictions Dual Disorders in Highlands County is a residential facility for men and women, providing therapy and counseling along with nurse and psychiatric services. Extending beyond their residential services, outpatient services are offered in Lakeland, Winter Haven, Avon Park, and Wauchula, as well as a Detox Center in Bartow, and a specialty program, Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) providing patients, “holistic access to

physiological and mental health,” according to Rihn. “We also have programs that offer prevention services in schools, faith-based organizations, youth, and civic organizations in the three counties,” he added. Along with the aforementioned Helping Hands program, TCHS has the JASA (Jail Alternative to Substance Abuse) treatment center, helping those with substance abuse cope, recover, and reduce their risk of recidivism back into the legal system. COMMUNITY IMPACT AND HOW YOU CAN HELP TCHS has received the highest accreditation for three years and ranks as a Five-Star Award organization by the managing entity (Central Florida Behavioral Health Network) and CARF (Commission on Accreditation Facilities). These rankings are but a reflection of the impact they make in the lives of individuals and the community, every day. While continuing to meet the needs of those they serve with a “no wrong door approach,” Rihn says, “Our goal is to continue to meet the need of individuals in our respective communities with a “welcoming” approach,” said the CEO. “We look to grow the organization to meet the housing need for our specific populations and their specialty need.” Rihn added, “A major goal is to also attract new Committee and Board members who are interested in carrying the TCHS message to our communities.” More information and application can be found on their website. The 2019 Friends of Tri-County luncheon which included a live auction, brought in $16,100. The organization has raised over $35K year to date. Funds are always a need of the nonprofit, as well as volunteers, staff, and donations of clothing and furniture. If you are in struggling with homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse or any of the issues TCHS covers, reach out for help. Denise Harrison says, “We can get through it.” Tri-County Human Services tchsonline.org FB: @TriCountyHumanServicesInc 1815 Crystal Lake Dr., Lakeland (863) 709-9392

Everything is Awesome! Where are you going on your summer vacation? If your answer isn’t Bricksburg, then you need to change plans! No passports or airfare needed for those of us in Polk County! Created in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products and LEGO®, the newest expansion features three new rides and numerous attractions, all inspired by the characters and themes of the worldwide blockbuster THE LEGO® MOVIE™ and the exciting big-screen animated adventure sequel THE LEGO® MOVIE™ 2: The Second Part. THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD marks the largest expansion in LEGOLAND Florida Resort history. The creative masterminds from Merlin Magic Making, the global creative and delivery division of parent company Merlin Entertainments Group, re-created downtown Bricksburg with its lovable characters, creative eating spaces and authentic cityscape where guests can experience Emmet’s Super Suite and many other surprises! “As we continue to grow our kids business, we are thrilled to partner with LEGOLAND Florida Resort, a leader in kids and family entertainment, to bring THE LEGO MOVIE franchise to life like never before,” said Peter van Roden, SVP, Global Themed Entertainment for Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “This highly-themed, colorful land is faithfully inspired by the characters, adventures and landmarks made popular in THE LEGO MOVIE films, and we are proud to bring this one-of-a-kind experience to our fans.” Not only will guests feel like life-size LEGO minifigures in the heavily-immersive land, but they’ll also be able to enjoy some of the world’s most-advanced ride technology. “THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD is a game changer for LEGOLAND Florida Resort,” said Keith Carr, project director of Merlin Magic Making. “The immersion and theming that we’ve incorporated into the area is unlike anything we’ve ever done. Our guests will have so much fun on all three rides, but the land’s marquee ride, THE LEGO MOVIE Masters of Flight encompasses the only 180-degree turn on a flying theater in the world.” THE LEGO MOVIE Masters of Flight takes guests on a suspended ride aboard Emmet’s Triple Decker Couch surrounded by a full-dome virtual screen, giving the

sensational feeling of flying through a world created completely from LEGO® bricks. Unikitty’s Disco Drop takes guests through a rainbowfilled journey based on Unikitty and her many moods. Once on the ride, guests will swoop to the tiptop of Cloud Cuckoo Land, then drop, spin and bounce back down to earth in sync with Unikitty’s wide range of emotions, creating a thrilling and frenzied experience. At Battle of Bricksburg, the only water ride at LEGOLAND Florida Resort, riders are challenged to stop DUPLO aliens from invading and stealing LEGO bricks by spraying water at targets from their boats. The riders aren’t the only ones who can enjoy playing in the water, outside of the ride will be water cannons for guests to spray and help the riders save the day. Guests can also climb, slide and explore a space-themed playground structure inspired by Benny’s spaceship. Once you’ve worked up an appetite stopping aliens, riding on flying couches, climbing on spaceships, you can eat everyone’s favorite food, tacos! In Bricksburg, it’s “Taco Tuesday Everyday!” Refuel at the restaurant where every day is a fiesta! Tasty tacos inspired by THE LEGO MOVIE characters, sweet treats and cold refreshments come together to build a meal sure to satisfy any hunger.

To continue the fun beyond the Park, guests can enjoy the ultimate vacation (or slumber party) just steps away at LEGOLAND® Hotel in the new THE LEGO MOVIE themed rooms. Designed with familiar scenery and beloved characters from the movie, no detail is left untouched. Adults can relax in their own room inspired by Emmet’s apartment, while kids dream of spaceship adventures in a separate children’s room themed after Benny’s Spaceship. Also available on specific event dates, guests can purchase an “Access to Awesome” pass which provides early theme park admission to experience THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD attractions prior to park opening (8:30 a.m.-10 a.m.). LEGOLAND Hotel is a five-story, 152-room Hotel which immerses guests into a creative LEGO world designed to bring children’s imaginations to life. It is located just 130 “kid steps” from the main entrance of LEGOLAND Florida. LEGOLAND Beach Retreat combines the fun of surf, sand and sun with the creativity of LEGO bricks and offers lakeside views from nearly every room. The villagestyle, lakefront resort features 83 single-story beach bungalows, offering 166 separate accommodations that sleep up to five. In spring 2020 LEGOLAND Florida Resort will open its third accommodation, Pirate Island, located adjacent to LEGOLAND Hotel.

Snap selfies with the stars of THE LEGO MOVIE films inside Emmet’s Super Suite or shop at The Awesome Shop! Guests will discover exclusive THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD gear and LEGO sets inside the retail store where everything is awesome!

“Insider Tip” from Shawn Mikus, Head of Public Relations: “Even though we are the park built for kids, parents and older kids can have just as much fun. With over 50 rides, shows and attractions, and multiple beer options throughout the park for adults 21+, there’s fun for everyone at LEGOLAND Florida Resort!”

THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD will also feature expansive LEGO models made out of nearly 300 thousand LEGO bricks combined. These exclusive new LEGO models will make for picture perfect backdrops. The largest model, the iconic crane from the movie posters, will provide a grand entrance and transport guests to Bricksburg.

Buy your tickets now and be among the first to experience THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD www.legoland.com/florida/.

“We couldn’t be more excited to officially open THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD,” said Rex Jackson, general manager of LEGOLAND Florida Resort. “THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD is a key piece to our expansion and growth as we further cement ourselves as a multi-day destination.”
