Happy New Year! I’m so happy to be spending 2022 with you all! This month we visit Gospel Village. For ten years, the Lakeland nonprofit Gospel Inc. has provided resources and helped find employment for the chronically homeless across the city. Brian Seeley, along with his team of volunteers, and community leaders, have worked together to secure sustainable and affordable longterm housing for the city’s chronically homeless. We learn about the progress they’ve made this far and what’s in store for 2022.
Technology. Experience. Service. There truly is a difference.
We also talk with Chanel Bellotto, the third-generation owner of Skate World! We met her when we did our Best Of LKLD issue back in September and her story is too interesting not to be shared! Thank you to the Lakeland Public Library for their January book selections, I can’t wait to start on those! Orange Blossom Poems has shared another gorgeous poem, we’ve hidden it somewhere in the magazine, please enjoy!

THE SQUEEZE: DOWNTOWN LAKELAND’S NEW SHUTTLE SERVICE
CAROL JENKINS BARNETT IS REMEMBERED FOR HER PHILANTHROPY
ALL LPD OFFICERS WILL GET BODY CAMERAS UNDER 10-YEAR CITY CONTRACT
COMING SOON: A NERF GUN AND VIRTUAL REALITY GAME ARENA
DEVELOPER PLANS 630 APARTMENTS AND RETAIL FOR ABANDONED FLORIDA TILE SITE
Some folks are getting juiced about the new downtown Lakeland shuttle service from the Citrus Connection; it’s called The Squeeze. Two eight-passenger golf carts carry passengers on two distinct routes. A lunchtime circulator (11:30 to 1:30 Mondays through Thursdays) runs a loop along Kentucky and Tennessee Avenues between Lake Morton and Bay Street, with a detour along Lake Mirror Drive to The Joinery. The weekend evening route (3 to 10:30 p.m. Friday and 4:30 p.m. to midnight Saturday) covers a wider territory from the Springhill Suites (RP Funding Center) to the edge of the Florida Southern College campus. Costs are $2/day; $3/week; $9/month, payable via mobile cash apps.
Tributes and warm anecdotes poured out after philanthropist Carol Jenkins Barnett passed away on Dec. 7. The 65-year-old Lakeland native and daughter of Publix Super Markets founder George Jenkins died at home surrounded by family six years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Friends and acquaintances recalled Barnett’s impact on Lakeland through donations and personal involvement in a wide range of local nonprofit organizations, particularly ones involving education at all levels and health care.
Every sworn officer at the Lakeland Police Department will be outfitted with body cameras under an agreement between the city of Lakeland and Axon Enterprise of Scottsdale, Ariz. However, it might be well into 2023 before the new equipment is completely rolled out, according to Assistant Police Chief Hans Lehman. A technology package locked in at $938k a year for 10 years will provide the department with 250 body cameras, 250 tasers, 165 in-car video systems, artificial intelligence to redact bystanders’ faces, unlimited cloud storage, upgrades as technology advances, and virtual reality headsets for de-escalation training.
Nerf guns and virtual reality games will be the focus of a family-friendly business coming to downtown Lakeland and adding to the growing roster of entertainment-oriented venues in the city core. Dart World Gaming Arena is expected to open by February at 201 Main St. in the former RP Funding Mortgage space. Owner Luis Lopez Jr. is planning two Nerf arenas with bunkers and covers for players and three virtual reality gaming rooms. The Downtown Development Authority’s Julie Townsend sees the business as offering choices for families and students, including high schoolers and “college students when bars are not an option.”
An urban-style community of 630 apartments with restaurants and shops will be built on the abandoned Florida Tile site west of Lake Wire, under plans unveiled at a meeting of the Lakeland Downtown Development Authority. The conceptual design by Atlanta developers Carter & Associates and architects The Preston Partnership received enthusiastic approval from the LDDA board. The project, located between Lake Wire and the upcoming Bonnet Springs Park, is viewed as a key element in plans to develop “downtown west,” an extension of the urban core from the RP Funding Center north.

LRH LAUNCHING A RESIDENCY PROGRAM, WITH FIRST STUDENTS REPORTING NEXT YEAR
With development coming to parts of downtown Lakeland west of Florida Avenue, city commissioners are turning their attention to ways to move pedestrians and bicyclists over and under the barrier formed by the CSX railroad tracks. They recently reaffirmed their support of a proposal to build a pedestrian bridge linking New York Avenue with Lake Wire. They also pressed their case to build a pedestrian underpass between Lake Beulah and the upcoming Bonnet Springs Park to keep walkers and cyclists from having to share the narrow and outdated Sloan Avenue underpass with cars and trucks.
Two new food/snack spots in Lakeland include a southside cafe with a menu emphasizing protein-enhanced shakes, refreshers, acai bowls, waffles, and donuts and a northside shop specializing in frozen custard and Italian ices. The health-conscious Rooted Lakeland was opened at 5327 S. Florida Ave. by a family that launched a similar restaurant in the Miami area. A Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard franchise was opened at 3115 U.S. 98 North by a New Jersey transplant who wants to share the sweet treats of her youth.
Katie Worthington Decker is moving back to Lakeland after cementing her reputation in community and economic developer as president and CEO of the Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce for seven years. Decker, 38, will become senior vice president at the Lakeland Economic Development Council, second in command to long-time President Steve Scruggs. LEDC is a nonprofit organization funded mostly by member businesses. Its work involves attracting new enterprises to Lakeland and advocating for business growth, with an emphasis on increasing highskilled employment and encouraging entrepreneurism through its Catapult business incubator.
Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, the LHS Dreadnaughts defensive tackle who was highly sought by major colleges, has decided to join the Texas A&M Aggies rather than the Oklahoma Sooners, his earlier choice, At 6-foot3 and 275 pounds, Brownlow-Dindy was ranked third or fourth top player in the 2022 recruiting class by several national publications. He was the fifth recruit Oklahoma lost after Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley announced he was leaving for the University of Southern California.
Lakeland Regional Health’s quest to become a teaching hospital will soon become a reality with the first students expected to start on July 1, 2023, according to hospital CEO Danielle Drummond. The Graduate Medical Education program will build gradually and expects to reach its capacity of 190 residents five years after launching. LRH’s medical center is the 44th largest hospital in the U.S., Drummond said, yet it is one of the few among the largest hospitals not involved in training the next generation of physicians, Drummond told city commissioners.

Gospel Village they need housing. This addresses the housing component of that. [...] When we bought the park in February, we knew there would be a number of these units that we needed to remodel. They are basically an extreme makeover.” Gospel Village invites residents to be active participants in the interior design process.
For ten years, Lakeland nonprofit Gospel Inc. has provided resources, fostered community, and helped find purposeful employment for homeless folks across the city. Founder Brian Seeley knew more could be done to serve this vulnerable population. Seeley, along with his Gospel Inc. team, volunteers, and community leaders, have worked together to secure sustainable and affordable long-term housing for the city’s chronically homeless. On February 3, 2021, property on E. Lemon Street, formerly Royal Oak Estates, was purchased, and renovations began for what was to become Gospel Village.
Next, we moved to the outdoor kitchen, gathering space, and farm. The Village hosts a community dinner every Thursday night for residents. Gospel Village offers community groups and bible studies to bolster that sense of community, which is at the core of its mission.
Many considered chronically homeless remain so due to mental or physical disabilities. Gospel Village offers permanent housing and dignified work for Lakeland’s chronically homeless. The tiny-home community currently has 35 units with plans to break ground on an additional 24 units in 2022. The nonprofit’s goal is to complete 150 units over the subsequent two phases of its project. Gospel Village is currently home to 40 residents.
Down another pathway, a community fridge and pantry are stocked with donations of fresh produce and pantry goods from local community groups and churches. A form of therapy, dignified work, and farm fresh eggs, a chicken coop is situated adjacent to the community pantry. “It’s a powerful tool for those suffering from anxiety and loneliness while providing a work opportunity for those in our housing programs. For those who can’t work elsewhere, they can work here and help in areas like this to receive permanent housing,” noted a volunteer during the tour.
HOME SWEET HOME During a November 3 “Friendraiser” for Gospel Inc., volunteer Hailey gave us a tour of Gospel Village. An intern at Together Church, Hailey volunteers weekly at the village as a part of the ministry program called Lead Florida. Sprawling oak trees provide canopy above paths dissecting rows of newly remodeled units and community gathering spaces. We entered one home that had been renovated entirely, including new windows, paint, cabinetry, plumbing, lighting, appliances, and furnishings. Gospel Inc. partnered with local artist Jenna O’Brien to design the interior, “helping create a happy space, which we believe will positively affect their mental health. We also have partnered with local mental health experts and volunteers to host events here on-site so our residents can walk outside of their homes and participate,” according to our tour guide.
The tour concluded with the opportunity to buy handmade and sewn items from RePurpose Art Studio. The studio is a coffeehouse gathering spot for homeless women in the morning, with devotions and prayer available to those who stop by. The art studio receives donations of clothing, food, and craft items that are repurposed into aprons, jewelry, candles, and the like. Donations towards items at RePurpose Art Studio support the women who make them.
A LIFE’S CALLING TURNED COMMUNITY “This is our ten-year anniversary as a corporation,” said Brian Seeley as he took the stage at the Friendraiser luncheon. The significance of that milestone has given him pause to reflect on “the journey that has brought us to this beautiful place.”
Gospel Village’s Restore Workshop Director, Robbie Lathrop said, “We believe that our residents need three things. They need to be in a relationship with Christ, they need community, and

Seeley came to Lakeland in 2008 to attend Southeastern University to pursue a ministry degree. “I was a brand-new Christian, and God put a call on my life to work with the homeless. It was something that was really strong in my heart,” he said. He began making friends with other college students and discussing how they could engage and better get to know the homeless. “We began to spend every single day with homeless folks all around the community. They became our best friends.”
In 2017, the City hired a consultant to help them think through and work towards resolving the issue of homelessness, particularly chronic homelessness, in Lakeland. Seeley was invited into that conversation. He learned that most chronically homeless people couldn’t gain employment for mental or physical health reasons. Their disability checks weren’t enough to afford rent, and many had no family or support systems. “I started grappling with this issue and started to dream of what we could do to provide a home and a community for people here,” he said.
Seeley and his friends eventually moved into the Parker Street neighborhood. They rented two houses and invited their homeless friends to stay with them. “What started with two people turned into 40 people living on our property,” Seeley said. The Gospel Inc. founder described that period as “one of the greatest experiences of my life,” but also “one of the most chaotic experiences in my life and not at all sustainable.” Police visits were usual occurrences at their Parker Street residence, so much so that Seeley would have dreams about them showing up and clearing everyone out. One night, the police were called to the home and had everyone on the ground with hands on their heads, including Seeley. They asked if he allowed all these people to live there, shining a flashlight on each head. He answered yes. They asked if he realized that the City of Lakeland could have him evicted for having so many people there. Seeley thought, “Who’s the City of Lakeland?” He hadn’t thought about the impact he had on his neighbors. He was thinking about his mission to help the homeless. “I’m blessed by the City of Lakeland and the community leaders here that walked alongside me,” Seeley said.
havenmagazines.com
Looking across the nation for best practices in providing long-term housing for the chronically homeless, they found Community First! Village in Austin, Texas. Seeley, Lakeland mayor Bill Mutz, executive director of Parker Street Ministries, Tim Mitchell, and other community leaders traveled to Austin. Community First! Village created a sustainable model with their 51-acre planned community and 1,200 homes dedicated to the chronically homeless. Seeley was blown away, calling Community First! Village “the Disney World of what we’re doing here.” He and his team began training to learn how to bring that model to Lakeland. “As we were envisioning what we wanted to do here, we came up with four pillars that were based on the model in Austin,” said Seeley. “We believe a relationship with God is critical to a person’s growth,” he said of the first pillar. “It changes their lives. […] It’s an invitation that we extend of the gospel to the folks that we’re serving here. Our hope is that they know God. […] We believe God is at the center of it, and it’s his hand that is sovereign over this ministry to carry it through and accomplish the mission that we’ve got here.”
18
The second pillar is community. “What I discovered is that just having a roof over your head isn’t enough. […] People need a support system. In Austin, they say that the greatest cause of homelessness is the catastrophic loss of family. […] Community is so important, and we’re blessed by the community they provide us. We learn so much from the people that we’re serving.”
at the art studio. “I met Suzie there. She was very consistent and quiet. [...] She would always go sit at this one table in the same chair,” she said. Gradually, Suzie shared her story with Lathrop. “A lot of these women are filled with trauma. They’re hurting. They have stories of wrecked lives. Each one has their own story, and they need to share it,” said the case manager.
The third is a place of permanence – home. “A place that you can put down roots and settle,” said Seeley. “This is a permanent home. You don’t have to leave.” He noted that transitional housing programs don’t work for the folks that Gospel Inc. serves because they’re often unable to get or maintain full-time employment and their disability checks aren’t enough to sustain housing. “A place you can stay – there’s so much peace in that,” he said. “Then you can start to focus on your basic needs, things you can’t do when you’re out there on the street in survival mode.”
Though diagnosed with learning disabilities in school, Suzie managed to earn a high school diploma. She also had health issues that have continued throughout her life. Suzie lived with her parents until they passed away with cancer. She went on to marry and have a daughter. Her husband left, and Suzie found herself unable to hold down two full-time jobs and raise a child with autism. Through this series of unfortunate life events and the loss of family, Suzie became homeless. “She ended up in a shelter and in my coffee shop,” said Lathrop. Lathrop talked Suzie into participating in their sewing program. She did, reluctantly. After 16 weeks of hard work – she graduated. That allowed her to put money aside and secure housing at Gospel Village. She was one of the first women to move into the Village. After moving in earlier this year, her exhusband became ill and was hospitalized. He could no longer care for their daughter, and she, too, became homeless. But, because Suzie had secured long-term housing, her daughter could move in with her at Gospel Village.
The final pillar Seeley discussed is purpose. “We provide work opportunities for everyone who is housed through our program. Everyone that we’re housing works for us, on our payroll, and that helps them contribute towards rent, and it puts money in their pocket.”
SUZIE’S STORY During the Friendraiser luncheon, Gospel Inc. case manager Murray Lathrop took the stage to tell the story of one resident whose life trajectory changed entirely because she now has a place to call home. Lathrop runs the coffee shop in the morning
Lathrop called Suzie a “hard worker” and a “sweetheart.” She brought her on stage to speak. Suzie said, “Thank you for giving myself and my daughter a safe place to live.” - CONTINUED ON PAGE 20 -

A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT
Gospel Inc. received one of the largest allocations. Commissioner Lindsey said, “I’m proud to announce [...] Gospel Inc., through this program, will be awarded $824,000. That puts a knot in my throat. […] Your County Commission and your City Commission are very much behind the passion that you have here today, and this is just the beginning. […] We’re still in Genesis, and there’s a long way to go.” Brian Seeley announced that they would be purchasing the property next door to the current Gospel Village and building new units with that capital. “We’re going to be building 24 brand new units on this property. […] Our goal is 50 units over there,” Seeley said.
Polk County Commissioner George Lindsey made a big announcement at the November Friendraiser. He explained that due to the pandemic, the County was the recipient of $126M to help those affected by COVID-19. “We pushed out a lot of money to people who lost their jobs, who had their hours cut back, businesses who were devastated. We gave $9M to the school system so they could buy laptops. We gave money to every Chamber of Commerce so they could help their members get through this mess. It was an enjoyable, necessary process,” Lindsey said. Following those funds, the County received some $30M to help the community with rent and utilities.
Before concluding the Friendraiser in a prayer, Mayor Bill Mutz said, “We are so grateful for the Board’s work on this, for Brian’s vision, for the County’s support, and for the ability to be a part of this and watch this grow, and to have solutions for people instead of ignoring them. That is what Christ called us to do. If we are to seek people and love unconditionally as a matter of course of our life to be able to live the gospel – this is what you do.”
“Recently, under the ARP (The American Rescue Plan) money, we were notified that we’d get an additional $140M,” he said. That money was divided into two $70M sections. “Since we spent most of the money last time on social programs and helping people in their daily lives, the Board made a commitment that we were going to spend most of this part of the money for capital assets that will long last beyond our time in service here. So that it creates an asset for the community – roads and bridges and sidewalks.”
Gospel Inc. (863) 940-9001 www.gospelinc.org FB @gospelinclkld IG @gospelincministries
The commissioner continued, “But we still want to carve out money for ‘social infrastructure’ as I call it – things that have a social element but still have lasting life. We earmarked $10.5M for that purpose.” After announcing this to the community and requesting applications, they received 179 applications totaling just under $80M in three weeks. In a collaborative effort, the list of applicants was whittled down to 42.

Skate World Disco lights refract and shimmy around the room. Overhead, Stevie B belts out the first chorus of “Diamond Girl” as seasoned skaters float around the rink in perfect rhythm with the music and each other. They pass a mother and daughter holding hands while dad clings to the wall to keep from falling flat on his back… again. It’s another Tuesday night at a generational hangout, Skate World. This legendary Lakeland skating rink has hosted some fifty years of birthday parties, first dates, rink rats, and squealing summer campers. Owner Chanel Bellotto works to keep Skate World clean and current so it can play host for a lifetime longer.
Bellotto always told her dad when he was ready to retire that he could sell the rink. She had her own ambitions and had no designs to take it over. After working in Washington, D.C., alongside Congressman Putnam for five years, Bellotto returned to Lakeland to work in event planning and fundraising at Florida Southern College. “When my dad passed away, it was very, very sudden.” When Bellotto resigned from her job to run the rink, everyone told her she didn’t have to do it, that taking on the rink meant inheriting a considerable debt. Just sell it and move on, they told her. But it was summertime, and Chanel refused to close the doors on all the children who had signed up for summer camps and relied on Skate World as a safe, fun place to hang out during their school break. She decided she’d keep Skate World open for a couple of months and sell it after summer. “At the end of the summer, I looked at my boyfriend at the time (who is now my husband), and I said, ‘We need to rip up the carpet, we need to gut the bathrooms, and we need new roller skates. And we’re going to Las Vegas for the roller-skating convention.’”
HISTORY OF SKATE WORLD In the early 1970s, Arlys Talbert purchased Skate World, operating at its original location off Memorial and Lakeland Hills Boulevards until 1973, when the rink moved to its current spot. In 1977 Arlys’ daughter, Arleen Talbert, married Adonis Dedes, and the couple purchased the rink from him. Dedes owned and operated Skate World until his passing in 2007. That’s when his daughter, current Skate World owner, Chanel Bellotto, took on the family business.
“His exact words were, ‘There’s a convention for you people?’” she laughed.
We sat across from each other in a café booth at the rink. Chanel wore a pair of skates as she shared memories of her dad and her time growing up at Skate World. She smiled through a few tears as she began to talk about her dad. “He didn’t know a stranger,” she said.
A RINK REFRESH The couple went to Las Vegas, where Bellotto joined the Roller Skating Association International. She played an active role with the organization, serving as president of the section encompassing rinks in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. After her time as president, she was elected to the National Board of Directors, on which she served for three years. Though the Skate World owner loved her time serving on the board, it required a lot of travel, which meant time away from her “sweet and very supportive” husband Al and two sons, Trey and Jackson. “I serve God first, then my family, and then my business. My managers and employees, I think of them as family,” she said. Bellotto fulfilled her term on the board in 2020.
Bellotto’s childhood was illuminated by neon light cutting through the smoke of birthday candles (her own and others’). She spent her days in a whirl of lights and music and pizza and roller skating. “I would come on Saturdays with my dad as a little girl, and I would skate and play Ms. Pac-Man – that was my thing,” she said. In her teens, Bellotto started working at the rink – hosting birthday parties, running the music, and helping at the register. “I do have a servant’s heart. I enjoy serving people and taking care of them,” she said. Bellotto describes her time growing up at Skate World as full of “happy, joyful memories.” Her father was beloved in the community, with many roller rink regulars referring to Adonis as their dad, uncle, or big brother. “I have parents and grandparents that will come in and tell me what a godsend he was because this was a place where they could drop their children off, and it was a safe haven. They knew that my dad would not let them go outside. They knew that if for some reason, they couldn’t come and pick their child up, my dad would take them home. […] If a child needed something, my dad would give it to them.”
Since taking ownership of Skate World in 2007, Bellotto has made it a mission to refresh the rink regularly – new flake epoxy floor in the café, new carpet, new tables, new lights, a new air conditioning unit. The most significant rink reinvestment was a new skating floor in 2011. Florida humidity wreaked havoc on both the previous wood flooring and concrete beneath. Skate World’s current laser-leveled, polished concrete skating floor came with a $100K price tag. The Skate World owner’s commitment to keeping the rink up-to-date paid off in 2018 when Chanel Bellotto was given the Operator of the Year award by the Roller Skating Association International. “It’s given to an operator that continually invests in their business. They’re a progressive operator, not afraid to take chances, not afraid to try things that are new, and willing to share those ideas with people,” Bellotto explained.
Adonis was even known to give hungry kids slices of pizza. “He was ever so generous and would give anyone the shirt off his back. He loved everyone,” said his daughter. Grown men have cried when they find out Adonis has passed, and folks continue to share stories of him with Bellotto. “That solidifies what I’m doing here. This is where I was meant to be,” she said. “God certainly had a plan because I was never, ever, ever going to run the skating rink.”

SKATING, STEM, AND SUMMER CAMP
GIVING BACK
Skate World is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to the public, with the second Sunday of the month reserved for Christian Skate when they play worship music. During Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring, and summer breaks, the rink is open Monday through Friday from 12 – 4 pm in addition to their regular hours.
Contributing to her community is vital to the Skate World owner. Bellotto volunteers her time at her sons’ school and her church, First United Methodist. She has served on boards for the United Way, Girls Inc., Junior League, VISTE, Habitat for Humanity, and Paint Your Heart Out. But Bellotto is always looking for other ways to serve. After praying about it, the idea for a weekly fundraiser night came to her. Now, every Thursday evening is an opportunity for schools, churches, and other 501(c)(3) nonprofits to raise funds for their cause. Skate World gives back a minimum of 25% to the nonprofit, including admission, rentals, and café sales.
Though one of the smallest rinks in the United States at 12,000 square feet with an 8,000 square foot skating floor, Skate World may also be the mightiest. The rink was one of the first to purchase the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) program from the Roller Skating Association International in 2015. “I want to invest in my community. Why wouldn’t I purchase a program that is going to give opportunities to children in my community to get excited about the STEM concepts?” said Bellotto. “Our lessons come from teachers across the United States. The best of the best of the best put together these lesson plans. We currently have ten lesson plans for elementary and eleven lesson plans for middle school,” she said. “Depending on what they’re teaching in the classroom, they can choose a lesson that’s going to complement what they’re already teaching.”
“I want to give back – that’s important to me. I look at this as a ministry, and that is the way I can help provide for others who may not be as fortunate,” said Bellotto. “As a small business owner and community leader, I feel it is my obligation to set a good example, especially for the next generation to recognize what a difference it makes when you serve others and how impactful giving back to your community can be.”
PRIDE AND JOY “My goal has always been for it to be a safe, fun, family facility,” said Bellotto of her Lakeland roller skating rink. “I like to say that my dad did everything perfectly in my eyes. I just added a woman’s touch.” As the third-generation operator of Skate World, Bellotto works to maintain the reputation the rink has earned over the decades.
After a 45-minute STEM session, students get a roller-skating lesson followed by two hours of skating. Money from anonymous donors helps fund field trips for Title I schools in the area, a testament to the generosity of our community, Bellotto says. The Skate World owner loves to see students’ faces light up when they enter the rink. Some have never been roller skating before. “So many of these families aren’t thinking about what family activity they’re going to do this weekend. They’re thinking about how to provide food on the table or how they’re going to pay the electric bill,” she said. “It has expanded the opportunity for so many children in our county.”
“There’s definitely a sense of pride and a sense of joy that I have been able to continue my dad’s legacy. I truly believe that God put me in this place to continue the ministry that my dad created and to be a safe haven for so many children.” Skate World 911 N Lake Parker Ave, Lakeland (863) 687-6447 www.skatelakeland.com FB @skatelakeland IG @skatelakeland
In addition to STEM, Skate World hosts lessons and camps. Every Saturday morning, instructor Joe Enthor, who has taught roller skating for over 40 years, offers a 30-minute lesson followed by time to stay and practice.

Dissent Craft Brewing Company Lakeland’s newest addition to the craft beer scene, Dissent Craft Brewing Company, opened on Kentucky Avenue last fall, bringing with them a lineup of rebellious brews and ‘outspoken ales.’ Founder and head brewer Chris Price and his former business partner opened Dissent’s flagship brewery in St. Pete in 2018.
Stringer is from Lakeland, so the city was naturally a suggestion for the brewery’s expansion. “Once we started looking at the area, we really loved the downtown. Our brewery in St. Pete is more in an industrial area, so this footprint is substantially different from there. We get zero foot traffic, and it has grown completely organically. […] We’ve done very well, but we wanted to be in a place where we got foot traffic and could be part of a thriving, active community,” said Price.
“I was a homebrewer for 15 years, and that’s ultimately what launched me into this business,” Price said. “Myself and my original business partner were corporate, suit-and-tie guys by day, and this was kind of our rebellion against that world. This was going to be our fun thing, our passion project.”
ABOUT THE BEER “We like to do a lot of experimentation. Our best selling beers are our IPAs and sours,” said the Dissent founder. “We get really funky with our sours, so we have all kinds of weird combinations – Blueberry Marshmallow, Living the Dreamsicle, which is based on an orange Creamsicle ice cream pop. We have one that’s inspired by Dole Whip [called the Annual Passholder], which is our best-selling beer for the last 18 months.”
In 2017, the two homebrewers left I.T. for IPA and got to work on their St. Petersburg brewery, Dissent Craft Brewing Company which would debut the following year. Dissent’s first beer was a mango habanero IPA, the Hazy Mangover. “It’s still one of our top five best-selling beers, four years later,” said Price. The brewery has gained a loyal following in St. Pete, so they brought their successful ‘hop’eration to the Swan City with partners Kevin Stringer and Ashley Mills. “It’s been a blast,” said Price.
Each of those brews started as small batch experiments that have been refined along the way. The way Price approaches it, “If it takes off, great, and if it doesn’t, we keep experimenting.” - CONTINUED ON PAGE 28 -

Dissent Craft Brewing Lakeland has twelve taps, a selection of canned beer, and crowlers and growlers to-go. Price described the just under 2,000 square foot Kentucky Avenue brewery as “tap-centric,” with 150 square feet accounting for the threebarrel brewhouse. “Everything is vertical, which makes brewing a little bit more difficult, but because of the downtown area, we wanted to minimize the brewery footprint as much as possible,” he said.
The Lakeland space is stylish and warm. Exposed brick walls on one side are juxtaposed with stained pallet wood on the other, lined with cushioned bench seating and a long community table. Bourbon barrel table bases and a blue under-glow beneath the bar add a special touch. The vibe is community-centric and cool.
Price added, “Here, the taproom is first, and the brewery was second. In St. Pete, the brewery was first, the taproom was second. It’s a much different experience.”
“One of the things that we’ve prided ourselves on is having a relaxed, family-friendly environment,” said Price. “It’s just as common to see a family with young kids in here playing games or shuffleboard as it is to have a group of people in here watching a football game. That’s the vibe and the community we’ve tried to create and maintain.”
Lakeland Dissent devotees can expect a good mix of what the brewery is known for, including plenty of IPAs and sours (their most popular) and more traditional brews like Irish Stout or London Brown Ale.
Their Kentucky Avenue locale is walkable to many of Lakeland’s favorite downtown dining spots, which patrons are welcome to bring into Dissent to enjoy with their Annual Passholder or Hazy Mangover.
Their flagship location has 24 taps and a four-barrel brewhouse. In addition to opening their new digs, the Dissent owners are in the process of expanding their brewhouse in St. Pete, adding tanks for additional brewing capacity.
On what Dissent hopes to bring to Lakeland, Price said, “In St. Pete when we first opened, what we were surprised by is it was not hyper-competitive even though there’s a high concentration of breweries compared to the population. Everybody is focused on building a community – a craft beer community. We hope that we can bring some of that vibe here, and be a part of it, and build something special.”
OUTSPOKEN ALES ON KENTUCKY AVE. Dissent had its grand opening in Lakeland on October 15 with a warm reception from the community. Before the grand opening date, Dissent Craft Brewing Lakeland had a soft opening, inviting a handful of their loyal regulars from St. Pete. “They’ve been very loyal and very supportive of us. It was great to have them out and let them see what we’re working on as we continue to build,” said Price.

Ryley Walker From Vermont to Lakeland RW: No calculated response to any feeling. All natural and whimsical. In general, I’m pretty balanced emotionally right now. I’m on a lot of meds.
On January 28 at 8pm, singer-songwriter and guitarist Ryley Walker will take the stage at Union Hall in Lakeland. The folk artist, originally from Rockford, Illinois, is currently on tour following the April 2021 release of his newest record, Course in Fable. In advance of his Union Hall jam sesh, LKLD asked Walker a few questions.
LKLD: I love the artwork on your covers. Do you create any of it?
LKLD: When did you first start playing music? How did you learn to play, and were you trained formally?
RW: I’m a terrible visual artist. All artwork is outsourced to talented people I know.
RYLEY WALKER: Thirteen years old. Rudimentary lessons on how to hold the guitar and basic chords and scales. Nothing too deep. Mostly learned from guitar tabs and playing along to records.
LKLD: You’ll be playing at Union Hall in Lakeland, Florida soon. What kind of experience do you hope to create or share with your audiences at live performances? RW: Usually, there is a lot of jamming and fun banter in between songs. I love when people come out and have their expectations blown away. I’ll play anywhere, anytime for the most part. I love to work, and I hope that shows.
LKLD: Who were some of your earlier musical influences? Any new favorite musicians or bands to speak of? RW: Early on, it was Sonic Youth. They were always my favorite band. New music I enjoy the latest Helado Negro record.
To purchase tickets to see Ryley Walker at Union Hall on January 28 visit unionhallevents.com. Union Hall 1023 Florida Ave S, Lakeland (863) 288-0372 FB @unionhallevents IG @unionhallevents Unionhallevents.com
LKLD: Congratulations on starting your record label, Husky Pants Records. You’ve also recently moved to Vermont and have embraced sobriety. How have all of these major changes affected not only the way you make music but the music itself? RW: Well, I’m alive and able to do it. All gifts of cutting out the bad stuff. I enjoy music more than ever. I’m present for it.

LKLD: Compared to Primrose Green, Course in Fable feels light yet complicated. Without lyrics, the music is telling a story, and it’s unpredictable from beginning to end. What inspired the mood and songs on the new album?

FOUR THOUSAND WEEKS By Oliver Burkeman
ATLAS OF THE HEART By Brené Brown
Healthy boundaries make for healthy relationships, but knowing when to stand firm can be hard. In this book, a licensed counselor and influential Instagram relationship expert shares simple but effective recommendations for how readers can establish healthy relationship boundaries, successfully have their needs met and be assertive without being offensive. If standing up for yourself is one of your new year’s resolutions, then this book is the perfect read for you.
Organizational psychologist Adam Grant invites us to examine the critical art of rethinking: learning to question our opinions and open other people’s minds, which can position us for excellence at work and in life. It’s an invitation to let go of views that are no longer serving us well and prize mental flexibility over foolish consistency. If knowledge is power, knowing what we don’t know is wisdom. A welcome guide to confronting the dogmas that keep us divided, and paving the way for a more civil discourse.
Becoming more productive and efficient are lofty goals, but Guardian writer Oliver Burkeman rejects the futile modern fixation on “getting everything done,” and instead introduces readers to tools for constructing a meaningful life by embracing finitude, showing how many of the unhelpful ways we’ve come to think about time aren’t inescapable, unchanging truths, but choices we’ve made as individuals and as a society—and that we could do things differently.
Brené Brown takes us on a journey through eighty-seven of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. As she maps the necessary skills and an actionable framework for meaningful connection, she gives us the language and tools to access a universe of new choices and second chances--a universe where we can share and steward the stories of our bravest and most heartbreaking moments with one another in a way that builds connection.
CHATTER By Ethan Kross
WILL By Will Smith with Mark Manson
UNWINDING ANXIETY By Judson Brewer, MD, PhD
THE MAGICAL YET By Angela DiTerlizzi; illustrations by Lorena Alvarez
We all talk to ourselves. Sometimes it’s an internal pep talk, but often it’s our inner critic telling us we can’t, so why try. This negative and disorienting self-talk is what Kross calls “chatter” and it can tank our health, sink our moods, strain our social connections, and cause us to fold under pressure. But, it’s possible to make our inner voice work in our favor by developing our more positive self, allowing us to have better chats with ourselves, ones that make us happier, healthier, and more productive people. This book gives us the power to change the most important conversation we have each day: the one we have with ourselves.
Need some inspiration for the new year? Consider this autobiography that offers so much more than just personal anecdotes. “Will” is the story of how one person mastered his own emotions, written in a way that can help everyone else do the same. Few of us will know the pressure of performing on the world’s biggest stages for the highest of stakes, but we can all understand that the fuel that works for one stage of our journey might have to be changed if we want to make it all the way home. The combination of genuine wisdom of universal value and a life story that is preposterously entertaining puts this book, like its author, in a category by itself.
We are living through one of the most anxious periods any of us can remember. Whether facing issues as public as a pandemic or as personal as struggling to find a work/life balance when working from home, we are feeling overwhelmed and out of control. But in this timely book, Judson Brewer explains how to uproot anxiety at its source using brain-based techniques and small hacks accessible to anyone. This book will help break the cycle of worry and fear that drives anxiety and addictive habits and give 2022 a fresh start.

As these sound waves wash over your body, they move the brain from the beta and into alpha & theta brainwave states. Basically, this means that the sound vibrations help to shift your brain into a calmer state and allows you the opportunity to experience a deeper meditation which can lead you to profound relaxation & healing.
