Lake Wales Depot In Need Of Repairs Lake Wales City Commissioners have authorized over $25,000 to repair damage at the Lake Wales Depot Museum. According to the city’s public and support services director, the support system of the east wall of the building needs fixed. Support studs have rotted out and has allowed water intrusion into the building. SEMCO Construction will do the repair work.
7th Street Near Lake Howard To Be Redone Renovations to Seventh St., running north/south in between Lake May near Tanner’s Lakeside and Lake Howard Dr. near McDonald’s began in July. The neighborhood street will be resurfaced with improved shoulders and pedestrian features. The project is funded by the city at a cost of $2.6M.
Pennoni Associates Moving Downtown The Philadelphia based engineering firm, Pennoni Associates, Inc., is moving and expanding its Winter Haven office to downtown Winter Haven. It will be in the old Red Lobster building at 401 Third St. SW. Pennoni joins a growing list of businesses that are moving in to the downtown district.

South Central Park Update
According to the Polk County Property Appraiser, the property values have been on the rise since 2013. Leading is Polk City at 29.06%, Davenport at 19.91%, Dundee at 19.80%. Auburndale at 15.18%, Haines City at 12.11%, Winter Haven at 11.87% and Lakeland at 8.01%.
All students in every traditional Polk County public school will qualify for free breakfast and lunch for the 2018-19 school year. Students who attend public charter schools may also qualify for the same funding. If your child attends a charter school, ask school staff if your child will benefit. Charter schools usually manage their own food service.
When the renovations to South Central Park are completed in September, downtown Winter Haven will be more colorful than ever before. Hundreds of customizable LED lights are part of the project. With stateof-the-art Bluetooth and panel controls, the new lighting can be customized with colors, intensity, patterns and more. The light poles will be slender with matching traffic bollards that have programmable and dimmable colored lighting to support pedestrian movement.
County Saves Money
Police Chief May PCPS Earns Best Wear 2 Badges Grade In 7 Years
Each year the sheriff must present a budget to the county commission and this year, much of his presentation was centered around efforts completed to save taxpayers some money. More than 3,000 county residents volunteered more than 150k hours of time in various capacities saving $3.4M, according to Sheriff Judd. It also helps that the crime rate in Polk County is at a 46-year low.
Winter Haven Police Chief Charlie Bird has apparently done such a stellar job as chief that the city is considering making him the first ever Winter Haven “Director of Public Safety.” This would mean that he would lead both the Police and Fire Departments with each dept. having a “deputy chief” who would report to Bird.

For the first time since 2010, the Polk County Public Schools earned a “B” grade. For the past seven years, the district earned a “C” rating. Also for the first time in seven years, none of the school district’s schools earned a grade of “F.” The District reduced its number of “D” schools to seven, down from 17 in the 2016-17 school year. 23 of the schools earned a grade of “A,” down from 25.

We love our pets! They’re our companions, best friends, fur babies, comedians & confidants. We love them as if they were our own children. Pets can change your life. Our family has 2 rescue dogs and I can’t imagine life without them. They both have different personalities and perform different jobs. For example, our dog Lola, is a protector. She will carefully sniff around the perimeter of wherever we are, to keep us squirrel-free. I’m happy to say, that after 12 years, we have not been attacked by any squirrels. Our second dog, Mochi is our psychiatrist. At the first detection of sadness, she will sit next to you. If you’re super sad, expect a deep stare, inches from your face. If that doesn’t work, she pulls out the big guns. Dog kisses on your cheek, arm, whatever it takes to get you to smile. She has pulled us out of darkness more times than I can count. Both dogs have changed our lives, and continue to do so. All they want in exchange? Food and a back scratch. I’d say we’re getting the better end of the deal. Walter: Instagram Famous! yard where he is able to hear the crinkle of the bag and chase it. Borzois commonly compete in lure coursing, which is chasing after a lure. They will often practice this with a lunge whip or flirt pole to get them to follow the bait. His favorite inside toy is a stuffed cow that rattles and crinkles like a water bottle. Toys that make noises are his favorite and help him be able to chase after them. Walter has come to work with me at the clinic everyday since he was ten weeks old. It has been great socialization for him. He goes out for playtime with his friends and then naps the day away in the office. Despite being blind, he can chase and fetch fairly well. We play a modified version where we throw the ball at the ground, so he can follow the bouncing noises. What’s special about Walter? Walter’s ears are very unique to him. They will always give away his current mood. They lay flat when he is relaxed, stand up when he is curious, and point straight forward when he is feeling devious. When he comes running from another room with his ears pointing straight, we know he just did something bad! How has Walter changed your life? Walter has quickly enveloped our lives since we got him. He has redefined my expectations of a “special needs” dog. I am constantly amazed by how comfortable he is and quickly he adapts to his surroundings. My husband and I went to a “dining in the dark” restaurant in London on our honeymoon and it gave us a new found gratitude for vision. I am astonished to see my blind dog conquer the world with no vision and no understanding of why. I am inspired by my vision-impaired dog. How long have you had Walter & where did you get him? We picked Walter up when he was ten weeks old. I contacted the National Borzoi Rescue Foundation and they gave me the information of a breeder in Washington that had an accidental breeding. The breeder was not aware that he had vision problems when she sent him to us. There had been no health issues with her dogs, so the cause of why he has cataracts is unknown.
A lot of people have a negative connotation that surrounds the idea of a vision-impaired dog. A video of his playing at my work went viral on several websites when he was a few months old. The video shows him bouncing back and forth, trying to keep up with the other dogs but not sure which way to go. I didn’t realize his video went viral until someone told me it was on Reddit’s front page. Unfortunately, it was removed shortly thereafter because it was “sad content”. I have seen a lot of comments on his videos where people feel bad for him. I don’t think people understand how capable Walter is though. Despite not seeing the world, he still enjoys it and brings joy to his daily routine. He still stirs up trouble around the house and gets into things like a puppy should. Walter developed cataracts when the rest of his litter was learning to see, so impaired vision is all he has ever known.
Tell us about Walter! Walter is pretty picky, so we rely on an assortment of treats. His favorite are the Lamb & Apple WellBars. Walter is spoiled rotten with toys. His favorite toy is a lunge whip with a plastic bag tied to the end. We use this in our

Coco: Award winning kisser & yoga master Tell us about Coco & where did you get her? Coco is an American Bulldog. Alapaha Blue Blood bulldog to be exact. There were only 350 dogs of her kind at that time... she just turned 10 in July. I didn’t even know what breed that was until she was given to me by her previous owners. She was 6 months old and only 30 lbs when I acquired her. She came from a family in Puerto Rico who couldn’t keep her because she did not get along with their other dog. They bought her from Georgia (apparently that’s where the breed came from) and they flew her to Puerto Rico. I was living there at the time and was so lucky that they asked me if I knew anyone who would be interested in their beautiful girl. They called her Miss Universe. And now she’s my universe. Tell us about Coco! Coco begs when we’re eating. She’s got those expressive puppy eyes that is hard to resist. She loves... oh gosh, where do I start? She’s not vegetarian, that’s for sure. She loves hard boiled eggs, broccoli, and egg rolls (when they fall to the ground). Oh, and rice and peanut butter! She’s got to my bag of potato chips as well. Her favorite toy is a squirrel - a fake stuffed squirrel. And it’s old, but she always goes for that plain, ugly thing. We play hide and seek around the house. I’ll have a treat in hand and she’ll sit and wait to look for me until I yell, “Where’s Mommy?” She used to love hiking in the rainforest of Puerto Rico. Since we’ve moved to Florida, she loves the dog beach of course, but her favorite place to go is Grove Roots and Downtown Winter Haven’s Saturday morning market. Grove Roots because people pay her attention. Downtown WH because she gets to eat popcorn from the ground next to the people that sell it. I literally have to pull her back to the car whenever we go to these places. People make fun of us.
How has she changed your life? She has changed my life and those around her so much. She brings joy and love wherever she goes. She gets a lot of attention because she looks different and has a calm demeanor about her. You know that quote, “be the person your dog thinks you are.” Yeah, she reminds me to be a good person. To live in the moment, to enjoy a good nap. To be grateful for little things and to love unconditionally.
I teach yoga at Inside Out Yoga in Winter Haven and sometimes I bring her to class. She has got Savanna (The relaxation part in the end) to a tee! She sometimes snores, but it adds peace to those around her helping them relax and sense her peaceful vibe. She has won several dog contests including best kisser (2 years in a row!) and musical sit. She knows several tricks such as sit, shake, roll over, nap, speak and open book (lays on her back). Her big lips fly like dumbo during a car ride. It’s hilarious!
I am divorced and my ex and I had her for years. When we split up, I told him to get anything, but I’m keeping Coco. That’s all I wanted and I was willing to fight for her. Luckily it didn’t have to turn out that way, but that’s how much I love her. Her previous owners still check up on her and they are so happy she is spoiled rotten and taken care of. I am so blessed to have her in my life.
What’s special about Coco? Coco is like my child. She is well behaved. All pet owners says their dog is smart, but really, Coco took only 3 days out of 5 in boot camp training. She doesn’t need a leash to walk. She is popular with my friends through Snapchat because they love seeing her bark and terrorize the mailman. Daily. 19

Rudy: Marketing guru & security specialist What are Rudy’s special skills? Rudy is best at marketing. People love him. I have regular customers that come in and don’t even say hi to me, they just ask where Rudy is. Rudy doesn’t live at the store, but he’s there pretty much everyday. In fact, it’s so routine that I don’t even need a leash when I park the truck. Rudy knows what to do and where to go and he does love it here. Sometimes you’ll see posts about his newly discovered sleeping spots on the G Vintage Market Facebook page, customers try to figure out where he’s at. He also gets up and greets some people, he’s very friendly, he has lots of friends that come to the store. Rudy likes to hang out with me even when I’m working out in my gym. He gets mad when I don’t take him. When I go to the grocery store, I leave him at home and he just barks and cries at the door for me. His favorite snack is a piece of lunch meat off my sandwich. It’s probably not good for him, but he loves it. The funny thing he likes is yogurt, I think it’s funny. Whenever I’m eating it, I give him some without the fruit and he loves it. He doesn’t really play with toys, he has them, but he takes them places and leaves them there. He’s not your typical dog. He’ll chase after a ball but he won’t bring it back, which is really funny. But Rudy’s all time favorite treat is ice cream. And it’s the only way to get him to take his medicine. Rudy was diagnosed with congestive heart failure which requires him to be on medications for the rest of his life. The ice cream makes the medicine a little easier to go down. I’m happy about that. How has he changed your life? Being single, and with the kids gone, pets give a lot of meaning to people. It’s just like having a kid, it gives you a reason to get up in the morning and to do things. A lot of the times, I’m here at the shop by myself, driving to and from, and he’s always right there with me. I even work a part-time job in the evenings and I bring Rudy with me. We drive a big John Deere tractor through the groves and I’ve placed a little carpet by the console inside just for him. He loves it.
Tell us about Rudy! Rudy is from a pet store at the Lakeland Mall back in 2010. He is a registered, full-blooded Pomeranian. Rudy’s favorite thing to do is to spend time with me. Everywhere I go, he goes. He does love coming to the store, G’s Vintage Market, where I have just under 9000 sq ft for him to explore. Everyday he finds a different spot to lay in. Most of the time, he’s sound asleep laying on the floor. It’s cute when a customer walks by and gets startled when they learn he’s a real dog. He opens his eyes and it surprises people. I always kid the people and tell them that the security guard is asleep again! Others try not to wake up him when they pass by, but I tell them not to worry, he’s a highly-trained security guard and he’s scanning you right now!

SPCA Florida
With an extensive background in marketing, animal rescue, and volunteerism, SPCA Florida’s new Executive Director, Shelley Thayer, was ideal for the 39-year old nonprofit. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Thayer was introduced through a friend to Best Friends Animal Society. Her planned two weeks of volunteerism turned into five months. From this time volunteering, she said, “My whole life changed.” Though she hadn’t thought of working with animals as a career possibility, Thayer has always had a heart for them. “I’ve always had a love of animals. That never went away.”Before this life-changing trip to volunteer after the hurricane, she had always helped her local Humane Society by fostering and fundraising. She has since, worked with Best Friends Animal Society for four years where she actually wrote their animal rescue guidebook. From there, she worked as the Executive Director for Cat Depot in Sarasota for nine years. She is the past president and current board member for the Florida Association of Animal Welfare Organizations (FAAWO). Towards the end of her time with the Cat Depot, SPCA Florida approached her to consult with them on catteries, a free-roaming cat room system, which the SPCA has since adopted. When the Executive Director position came open for the SPCA, it was too perfect to pass up. “Now I’m able to work with cats and dogs which I love, and a great team and I’m finding a wonderful community,” she beamed. Thayer, who moved to Lakeland with her own three rescued cats and one rescued dog, has big 22
plans for the organization and the animals under their care. The SPCA takes in animals from all types of situations. Some are surrendered to them, found abandoned, have to be given up for financial reasons, rescues, or in particularly sad cases when their owner passes away with no animal care plan in place. Thayer said, “That’s the saddest one for me because these are animals that were loved and well taken care of for many years and sometimes if we’re full and the Humane Society is full, they end up at Animal Services. If Animal Services is full, it’s a terrible tragedy to end their life like that.” She is currently working on a program around lifetime care, making plans ahead of time so that should something happen to the owner, the animal will be taken care of. To address the financial hardships that some pet owners face, “We’re working on safety net programs now to help these animals stay with their families, people who love them.” The SPCA is a huge advocate for spaying and neutering your pets. If you didn’t see the other side of things, you might not understand why that is important. The Executive Director explained that along with stray animals that are not spayed or neutered when animals have unplanned litters, owners sometimes abandon them. These circumstances are rough for the mother and the litter, often ending in the suffering or death of an animal. On that subject, she said. “If every person helped, we would not be in the situation we’re in today. Even though the situation is improving for
the animals, we are their only voice. We are their only help.” “I know that Polk County, in particular, has a lot of pride in taking care of their own here, at least that’s what I’ve learned in the three weeks that I’ve been here,” she smiled optimistically. “That makes me very hopeful that we can turn our situation around in Polk County because we do have an extremely high euthanasia rate here.” “We have assistance for free spay and neuter for those who need it,” she said. “There’s no reason not to spay and neuter your dog or your cat so that they don’t have to go through an experience like the ones that I’ve seen.” Giving an animal a spot in your family by adopting them is, of course, a wonderful way to impact that animal’s life and the SPCA. Outside of adoption, because we don’t all need twenty cats and dogs no matter how bad we want them, there are other ways to help the SPCA. Donations and fostering are huge for the organization. Specifically, monetary monthly donations help to keep the SPCA, which is a sizeable operation, moving smoothly. Every dollar goes towards the animals in one way or another, but there are needs that most people might not consider. “The infrastructure is something that no one ever thinks about that we need a new door, or we need a new laptop to work. Those kinds of things we’re always struggling to find money for,” Thayer said. The SPCA is right now desperately in need of a new roof.
Adult volunteers are also a current need for the SPCA. Though they have many high school age volunteers that do a fantastic job, adult volunteers that are able to keep a consistent weekly schedule, even if it is only one or two times a week, are something every department at the SPCA is in need of. For the role she will play in the future of the SPCA, Thayer explained, “Part of my focus is on best practices, that we’re doing everything possible that we can for the animals and that we’re doing it correctly – that no matter what their background, they’ve come in here to be pampered, to be treated well, and then to go to their new home.” “I’m looking at enrichment,” Thayer said. “Many of these animals have been in horrific situations. Some come from really terrible situations like hoarding or abuse. We want to let them know that everything is going to be okay, they’ve made it to a safe haven and not only are they safe, but they’re going to be pampered a little bit while they’re here.” To adopt, foster, volunteer or donate, visit the SPCA website or give them a call. ARTS says, is to build a relationship with the pet owner. “They’re trusting you with their baby.” Part of building those relationships comes with how transparent Groomingdeals is with the grooming process. The grooming floor is entirely open for all to view when pet parents walk in. With the trust of the pet parents, the process begins. “From there, we take the babies to the back and that’s where they start getting pampered.” Doggies start in the back with the bathers. They get a bath with shampoo and conditioner and get their teeth brushed. Grooming Deals Sometimes your life calling comes to you through trial and error. Sometimes in a sudden lightning bolt of inspiration. And sometimes, it comes in the form of three ridiculously cute and fluffy cocker spaniels. “I owned three cocker spaniels many years ago and they were my life,” said Angie Todd, owner of Groomingdeals pet grooming. “When I went to work in retail, I had bags with their pictures on them, they were just my everything.” Angie is from Auburndale originally but has lived in Winter Haven for 30 years. After a 21-year career in retail, she worked as a bank teller for about a year. “I wanted the drive-thru because I wanted all the puppies, all the people that would come through with their puppies. I’d make them little gift bags,” Angie said. One such bank customer was a havenmagazines.com
groomer, the same groomer Angie used for her three pups in fact. “I thought ‘Wow, if she can do this, I can do this,’ because the bank really wasn’t in my heart,” she remembered. With sights set on the dog grooming business, she attended a grooming school in Tampa. “Right then I knew I was going to open a shop,” she said. Upon finishing school, Angie knew she’d need some experience before diving into the doggie business. She worked for three different salons in town to learn how everything worked, taking a little knowledge and expertise from each one. “I took a chance in 2010 when the economy was really bad and started by myself, and now we’ve got eight people employed,” she beamed.

She dished that most of the time, that initial anxiety subsides when the pet parent leaves. She used the example of a dog they affectionately call “Jake the Fake” who shakes terribly when being dropped off and picked up, but during his visit, the moment his mom leaves the shop, Jake’s silly personality shines through. “I think it’s more of the parents having separation anxiety more than the puppies,” she said. “Once you guys leave, 99 percent of the dogs chill out.” Of the three dogs that stole Angie’s heart and inspired her to start Groomingdeals, one is still with her. Salem, the 17-year-old cocker spaniel used to come to work with her mom but retired at age 13.

“She’s truly my rock, my heart,” Angie smiled. “She’s probably one of the bigger reasons I did open the business too because I wanted a job where I could take her to work with me.”
Finally, they get all “prettied up” in Angie’s words, with a bow or bandana.
The groomer says her favorite part of the job is, “Making the dogs feel better when they leave.”
Having your dog groomed isn’t just for aesthetics according to the Groomingdeals owner. Though seeing your puppy all spiffed up in a fresh bandana is a plus, the groomers do much more. From pulling ear hair and brushing teeth to trimming their nails, “By doing all this, we can detect something that a parent at home just petting them is not going to notice [such as] that ear infection or that bad tooth. When we do all of this, we can let them know if we see something abnormal,” she said. Angie advises your dog be groomed every six to eight weeks.
“We get some dogs that unfortunately are not from good homes. Maybe they’re infested with fleas or ticks or have sores all over them, and just giving them a good bath, you can see it on their face like ‘thank you, thank you.’”

My luxury lunch date with a HydraFacial Recently, I was lucky enough to spend the afternoon at Spa G in Winter Haven. I met with owner, Lynn Giddings to talk about a very special treatment she does there, called a HydraFacial. The machine’s handpiece holds patented spiralized treatment tips equipped with “vortex technology” — the whirling force that both takes away what you don’t want and leaves nourishment. According to Allure Magazine, somewhere in the world, a HydraFacial is performed every 15 seconds. That’s more than the total number of Botox injections administered in the U.S. in 2017. The three steps of a HydraFacial are the cleanse and peel, extract and hydrate and finally fuse and protect. The first step gently exfoliates and resurfaces. Your skin is cleansed and then given a light peel. This absolutely does not hurt at all, it’s very gentle. The next step uses a painless suction to remove debris from your pores, at the same time you’re quenched with moisturizers that nourish your skin. Finally, the skin is saturated with antioxidants and peptides for a beautiful glow. Beyond these standard three steps, there are add-ons which can help unique skin concerns, like brown spots or nagging lines. The HydraFacial’s technology creates an instant glow. At the start of my facial, I have to say ,that the spa is very relaxing before anything even began. The walls and decor are elegant and soothing. Soft spa sounds play in the background as you change into a super soft terry cloth towel (Think strapless dress) . The surface to lay on is soft and heated. The room is dim with candles lit making this quite possibly the absolute best and most luxurious lunch hour of your life. No need to remove eye makeup, she works around it.
The HydraFacial machine is from California. Once the machine was shipped to Winter Haven, representatives from HydraFacial came out to give Lynn two personal training sessions with it. If you are able to start on a monthly routine, you will see the changes. Bonus, Lynn is very good at providing the full spa experience from decor to her relaxing attitude.
My facial began with Lynn cleansing my skin. A very lovely scent of lemon balm wafted over me as she cleansed and massaged my face. When the actual HydraFacial began, the machine has a low, hum. The process didn’t hurt at all, but you can definitely feel the suction. Keep in mind, you will soon be glowing. The entire process takes less than 30 minutes, more for light therapy. After I was finished, the fine lines around my mouth and eyes were gone. My skin looked plumper and it definitely

What was the inspiration for the event?
Chris: We will have four different taco stations. Without giving away all the details, we will have Brisket, Pork, Fish and a vegetarian option. The culinary chefs at the Publix cooking school have nailed it with the tacos. Publix will also be providing a dessert station as well. You will not leave hungry...
Chris: This has been an event I have wanted to do for a while. Tiki drinks are all about summer and are really fun over-the-top cocktails. And, who doesn’t love a good taco? There is a little backstory. As a kid I used to go to a movie theater in Dayton, OH called Kon Tiki. I saw Star Wars there in 1977. The theater and the movie made a big impression on me. A couple years ago while having a tiki drink, I thought Kon Tiki Taco would be a great event... Here we are.
Why did you want to be involved with this event? Bump: Getting involved with this amazing event was a no brainer. I love anything vintage Hawaiian/ surf culture. We hit the beach every chance we get, so why not bring a little of the beach to Lakeland.

Laker’ s Barkery Are you a dog Mom or Dad? Please read the following important and delicious information: There is an amazing dog Mom that makes the most delicious, preservative-free cookies for dogs. Her name is Nicole Cochran and she grew up here in Winter Haven. While away at school in West Virginia, she got a dog and named him Laker. Inspired by the team of the same name, she thought it would be a unique dog’s name. “Laker is my dog and he’s the actual inspiration for Laker’s Barkery,” Nicole explained to me. “When I first got Laker, there were a lot of dog treats being recalled, and it kind of freaked me out. He has a few health issues and a history of seizures, so I started thinking what I could do to contribute to his health being better.” In school to be a registered dietician, she uses that knowledge behind the scenes when making the dog treats. “It kind of goes hand in hand, with humans and dogs. One day I can expand my treats with a degree under my belt.” Not being a professional baker, she started working on making healthy treats for Laker. “I started to research what is healthy for dogs, what wasn’t and kind of went from there. He’s my taste-tester and would let me know what was
good and what wasn’t.” She continued, “I was still in school in West Virginia when I started baking treats, maybe 4 years ago. I just played around with it, I posted on Facebook if anyone would be interested and it skyrocketed.” After graduation, Nicole stayed and worked for a few years in WV. She moved back home about two years ago. “I’ve started taking it more seriously in the past two years.” She described her process, “I’ve played around with it, taken different strategies, different flours and vegetables. Tried out things to see what would make them last longer since there are no preservatives.” The most popular flavor is pumpkin and peanut butter. “It’s good for their stomach and good for their digestive system. I put oatmeal in it because it’s good for their coats.” The treats last 2 weeks in an airtight container in the refrigerator. One thing Nicole does differently, is not use any meat. “Dogs like vegetables, people don’t realize that. You can give your dog raw vegetables as a snack.” The treats are all made by hand, in small batches. “It’s relaxing for me. It started as a hobby just for Laker, then it turned into my thing to do to unwind. It’s become my side business and I enjoy that part of it, it’s not about making money it’s about making something good for the dogs.” I had to give my dogs a taste test. Nicole shared the blueberry oatmeal with me.
When I gave them to my dogs, a couple of things happened. My first dog Mochi, loves the treats. I know this because she starting jump-spinning. That’s a sure sign of deliciousness. Second, after I walked away, I saw her staring up at the approximate location on the counter where the cookies were located. She was possibly trying to use Jedi mind tricks, however the force was not strong that day. My second dog Lola, is older and doesn’t have many teeth left. She was able to eat the cookie in a few bites and wanted more. My conclusion, the treats are the most amazing things they’ve ever eaten. I feel pretty good about giving them to both of my dogs, knowing that there are only good, real ingredients in them. There are no plans for a brick and mortar shop. However, there are dreams of a mobile kitchen that she could attach to her Jeep like a doggie food truck. “I also make Laker ice cream, so I would sell that, too,” she said with a smile. AIRBOAT BARBIE
Honestly, until just recently, I had no idea airboats could go on land. I had only seen them on the Chain of Lakes a time or two or on Highway 60 heading east. A couple months back I had a client/friend tell me that I should make a camo tank-top with bubble gum pink sparkly letters that said, “Airboat Barbie.” So, I guess that’s what somewhat created a preconceived notion of the whole “airboatin’ thing.” So when Speedy invited us out airboatin’ one Sunday, I pictured Barbie and Ken and Ken’s best friend floating around this beautiful place called River Ranch and camping at The Mack Resort.
Well... that kinda changed once we pulled up to the general store at Camp Mac and I saw the signage and realized it wasn’t a country club. The thing that didn’t change was, I was still dressed like Barbie; donning wedges, diamond earrings, a little camo outfit and a string bikini. We’re going on a boat right? I guess I almost thought, that whatever this glitter painted thing Speedy was towing, was only a portion of the boat. Perhaps it was the engine, and the propeller blades and seats would somehow hinge down from their current high and upright position. There had to be some other half of the
boat that you can actually hang out and sunbathe on that would blow up or magically appear from a trunk or trap door. There was a footlocker type compartment called the deck lid, that turned out to be where you stored your Crown-n-Coke and everything else you brought that you didn’t want to lose. It was then that I found out airboatin’ ain’t no joke and it definitely ain’t no pontoon.
In the words of our screen printer Robert, “Airboatin ain’t for crybabies or sissies.” And if Barbie is goin’ on an airboat, she better have waterproof mascara on. This is not for the light hearted and can be dangerous if you don’t know what your doing. These
things can flip left and right or sink if you aren’t paying attention. So for our first time, even though my outfit wasn’t right, we had picked the right captain: Charles “Speedy” McCorquodale who we call, “Saint Exspeedito.” He has years of experience under his belt and Nando has had many firsts with him, considering the fact that they are BFF’s from high school. I just chuckled thinking of the fact that I called Nando and Speedy BFF’s. Cute, that’s funny… Okay, going back to my outfit for one second, Nando never looked at me before we left the farm and suggested I reconsider the 3-inch heels or the camo mini skirt. I guess after ten years of marriage he’s just learned to let me go… When Speedy got to the farm to pick us up it was literally like the song ‘I’m a Barbie Girl’ by Aqua. “Hiya Sally and Nando!” “Hi Speedy!” “Do you want to go for a ride?” “Sure!” “Oh we’re about to have so much fun!” “Oh the fun is just getting started.” Well… today I was a ‘Barbie Girl’ and I was about to be in an ‘Airboat World.’ Fashionably speaking that day, the only mark I had hit was wearing the camo pattern with fluorescent writing. Every other individual that I encountered from the moment we left the farm and throughout the rest of the day was in some form of camo, but it was practical. I should have realized I was in for a wild ride when we were at the Bartow Air Base, chattin’ it up with a pilot while we both filled up on aviation fuel! Speaking of others, I couldn’t understand why Speedy’s bride Sarah didn’t come. He said, she wanted to stay home and “relax.” I thought, since when has going on a boat not been relaxing? That problem was solved really quick when I found out there were only three seats and we were in the middle of going hog wild down a straight away canal at what felt like 90 miles per hour. I totally
kept checking my little diamond earrings to make sure they were not ripped out of my ears with all the g-force and hurricane like winds. My hair was blowing all over the place. My hat was threatening to blow off and my bandanna ended up being a makeshift face mask to keep the bugs out of my mouth and nose. Thank God I had my Dad’s safety construction sunglasses that I had grabbed, (because I thought they completed my look) on the way out the door. So, that was all just within the first five minutes of getting going. I had no idea how I was going to endure this all day. We came to the first stop and there were more… like ants, the boats started coming out of the weeds and literally popping up on shore. All of them were in the same type of apparatus that we were in. The men are mostly the drivers or “keepers of your fate.” They sit in the front up high on what resembles a King’s Throne with a scepter, (Rudder Stick) in their left hand and the accelerator pedal at their right foot, usually floored whenever we were moving. The right hand was free to hold a drink or used to hold on for dear life. Their beautiful wives or fearless kids perched behind up much higher than them over the coon cage. In our case it was super calm Speedy, and Nando and I screaming like girls up behind him because all of a sudden, the airboat was leaving the water and GOING ON LAND!!!!!! I thought he must have made a mistake. There is no way I can help these two push this thing back into the water. Why would he go on land and stop? At any rate, it stopped and I was ready to get off. Speedy said it would glide right back into the water or wherever he wanted to make it go. But for now, all of a sudden Speedy needed to clean all six of his fuel injectors. He and Nando are known for finding projects like this to do at the strangest times… like when you are just getting going. But I was fine with it. I was on solid ground and it was called ‘The Ridge’ and I was going to have a Corona and adjust myself. We made the mistake of bringing glass bottles that broke all over the boat by the end of the - CONTINUED ON PAGE 36 35

day. Won’t do that party foul again. Okay, so now Nando and Speedy have had their mechanical fill and Speedy said, “We’re gonna go for a while. There are a bunch of little ‘areas’ with nicknames where we will stop, hang out a little bit, have snacks or whatever and then go again. We won’t be able to hear each other, so tap on my shoulder if you need me or if anyone falls off.” Just kidding... Kinda… As promised the air-rocket machine glided on top of the grassy land and effortlessly back into the glassy water. We were off. Just seconds later blasting down the middle of a cow pasture! From water to land and back again! There were cattle on both sides and birds blazing across our path. Fish were jumping and I even thought I saw a Mermaid. I remember thinking, why are people going to Animal Kingdom for the “Safari” ride or “Expedition Everest” for the rollercoaster? Airboatin’ blows them away. Literally out of the water. In the middle of the madness Speedy screamed wheeewwwww call your French friend Sebastien on Facetime and show him how we’re doin!! Nando yelled, “No Sally, don’t let go and don’t get your phone out, it’ll blow away. I’d say about two hours deep into the abyss, by our third stop, we found some fellow air boaters that Speedy knew from previous rendezvous’ or outings. They were out bar-b-q-ing, cooking sausage that they shared with us and talking about how they were going to watch the Disney fireworks later from the Alex Grand Bell spot. By now I started to get settled in. It was like we were in the wild, wild west, but I kinda knew what to expect at this point. Or so I thought… Nando and Speedy were having as much fun as they did when they were teenagers if not more and aside from the fact that my mini skirt kept riding up to my waist, I’d decided that I could get used to this. I really liked it. I loved it. I was getting used to the rush of the air and lake water and semi whiplashed every time we did a knife sharp spinout turn. This was topping most of my favorite things to do. All three of us were on what seemed like a Bucking Bronco, but Speedy had it shockingly under control. We swooshed up onto the spot called “Big Hole in the Wall” where there was what seemed like a hundred airboats parked, sporting painted rudders (I kept calling them “Flappers”) and little fluorescent orange triangle flags dancing high above the propeller cage. It was a party like I had never seen; people were blasting country music, sipping moonshine, devouring Publix hoagies and homemade pickled peppers. We sat and watched other airboats drag racing up and down what resembled a runway. Other dare-devils kept stopping over and asking Speedy if they could see his custom boat. We were part of the club. It’s like an exclusive club on another planet and in order to meet up with other havenmagazines.com
members and get from one point to the next you have to know your way around the secret paths like the back of your hand. No wonder they don’t allow airboats on the Chain unless it’s the one day we’re cleaning up the lakes. And muddin’ trucks stay off road for a reason. I guess high heels have their place too... That day, nothing compared to the smell of mud, the marsh and the moonshine. We felt like we were Christopher Columbus discovering New Worlds on every turn. We whipped through a beautiful sunset and found a baby gator that we saved with Speedy’s guidance and Nando’s bare hands. We watched Speedy transform from his t-shirt and shorts into some sort of ‘space suit’ putting on a long sleeve plastic pant suit and headlamp that he connected directly to the airboats battery, now he was warm, dry, and able to navigate back in the dark. The two of us on the other hand were unprepared and freezing being at our chairs high altitude seats in high winds racing home. We got lost in the dark on the path or lack there of back and literally didn’t know where we were. Christopher Columbus-Saint Exspeedito, AKA Speedy, was lost. (He’s probably going to be mad at me for sayin so, but it sure as heck felt like we were lost in pitch black. We were thinking… we might have to sleep out here… Thinking back, maybe he was just playing with us to scare us. He wasn’t lost at all. I’m actually sure it was just for sport. That’s so Speedy.) We did make it back somehow. It felt like we had been out for days. We want to do it again. The only thing I would change is my outfit and carry along my Yeti cup next time. I still might make that “Airboat Barbie Tank” to wear if Speedy invites us again. Possibly we’ll make it to Alex Grand Bell to watch the fireworks too. In 1931, an Austrian man bought a 1929 Gibson Granada banjo from a music store. An exorbitant amount of money at the time, priced at $350, it just sat on the shelf until this man purchased it. Gold plated, engraved, with a flathead tone ring, the thing was as arresting to look at as the sound it produced. Decades later, this banjo now sits on a stand in Auburndale as the first in an impressive collection of others that act as ornate trifecta pieces of art, history, and music. Do you remember the first time you fell in love with something? For an artist, it might be a crayon drawing of a horse from when they were three-yearsold or a set of watercolors that came as a birthday gift. For a baker, it may be the first batch of cookies they made with mom. For Roger Barfield, it was circa 1966, Carlton Music, and a banjo. His love of music started much farther back than that, however. Roger’s family moved to Auburndale from Pavo, Georgia in 1959. His grandfather owned an auto paint and repair shop which his parents bought when they moved down. Now, in the same business, Roger owns Hi Tech RV and Auto Repair. The music bug first bit Roger around five or six. He had an uncle that was in the Air Force that played guitar. “I was dragging plastic instruments around. He actually taught me to play my first song on the guitar which was Wild with Flower when, I think, I was about eight years old,” he said. In 1966, when he was fifteen, one of the men that worked at the family body shop brought in a banjo he’d bought at Carlton Music. A Morris banjo, Roger remembers, that the man let him play around on. The very next day, Roger headed to Carlton to buy himself one. And so began his love affair with the bluegrass instrument. “In 1976, I put the first Bluegrass Festival on in Auburndale, the very first one.” Called the

Auburndale Bluegrass Festival, Roger had the help of some professional musicians of the day – Paul Champion, Carl Chambers (who wrote Close Enough to Perfect which was recorded by Alabama), the Bellamy Brothers, and Ricky Skaggs. “This community has produced more musicians that anywhere that I’ve ever visited other than West Virginia and Ohio.” Roger is a collector as you might have guessed, and a very specific one at that. “I started collecting at about 15 years old. I’m now 68,” said Roger. Having had as many as 54 banjos at one time, Roger is particular with what he chooses to add to his collection. Most of the banjos in his collection are from 1925 to 1941. “They’re all pre-war made,” he answered when asked about the specificity of the time frame. “The wood has cured and the instruments have cured out where they give the greatest tone.” Though he no longer has the one he picked up from Carlton Music, he still has the first official of his collection. Roger picked up a banjo and began, “In the Gibson banjo world, the icon of the banjo comes from a famous banjo picker by the name of Earl Scruggs. Earl Scruggs played a 1933 Granada which is a gold-plated, engraved banjo.” With the help of a friend in London and Joe Spann, former Library Director for the Polk County Historical and Genealogical Library, Roger arranged to fly to London to buy this prize banjo – the 1929 Gibson Granada, owned by an Austrian man, who at that time was in his 90’s. He picked up another, “This one is from Sweden. This is a 1930 style 4 flathead.” He to flew to Reno to meet the seller flying in from Sweden. You don’t just ship an expensive and important collectible item, so Roger put it on the seat next to him on the way home. To buy a plane ticket though, you must have the name of the person that will be sitting in

that seat. The banjo, Gibson Barfield, flew back to Florida. He had an extra special story about a banjo that came from Iowa, “I’ve got the newspaper clipping on that,” he said in a prologue to his account. In a small town in Iowa, a boy would travel around, picking up the trash that other people would put out by the road. He came across a banjo and picked it up. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure after all. “I’ve got a picture of him dragging this banjo in the case, down the road in Iowa when he was 13 years old,” said Roger. The boy, now a man, had the banjo appraised in Nashville by a friend of Roger’s, Curtis McPeak. Until then, the man had never been outside of his little county in Iowa. With six kids ranging from a month old to 12-years, a wife, and the dream of a little farm, the man struck a deal with Roger to sell the banjo. Roger stopped mid-story, “You hear that? You hear those things ring?” he asked about the tone of his voice making music with the room of banjos. “That’s the vibration of the wood. That’s what gives them the sound.” He continued, explaining that the man picked him up from the airport with all six kids and wife in tow, and drove the two hours back to his hometown. He took Roger to his mother’s house where he had the banjo. The man disappeared into the basement while Roger sat at the kitchen table listening to a cacophony of clangs and clashes from below. The man poked his head around the basement door and asked for a little help. The man with not much money to his name and knowledge of the worth of banjo took the highest precaution to keep his prized possession safe. He put the banjo in the corner of his mother’s basement

and took everything from his house and his mother’s and stacked it all around the instrument. “You could have never found it,” Roger recounted. Some time and elbow grease later, the banjo was retrieved. The next day, the man insisted he take Roger out for breakfast before going to the bank to complete the transaction. At the bank, the substantial transaction put the tellers in such a tizzy that they accidentally transferred the money to the wrong account. The blunder was sorted out and Roger walked away with another valuable piece for his collection and a funny story. The man walked away, able to buy that little farm for his family. So, what exactly does Roger look for in a banjo? Originality. He prefers banjos that have not been interfered with. He walked up his stairs to retrieve one to show just what he meant. He returned carrying a banjo that had been taken apart. “What people would do is take and buy these banjos that have the raised head tone rings in them and they would cut the rim down about a little more than fiveeighths of an inch or so and put an aftermarket tone ring in them, trying to get them to sound like the ones that these that has these flathead tone ring.” “That kills the authenticity of it,” he added. Interestingly enough, the banjo purist doesn’t read music. He taught himself to play by ear, actually. When learning, he would turn his turntable down to slow the speed. He’d tune the banjo to mirror the record and put the song together.
Making his stage debut, Roger played with the Chambers family band. He used to frequent the Central Sound Studio in downtown Auburndale where Carl and Gerald Chambers were part of the house band. Host to musicians like the Chamber Brothers, Gram Parsons, the Bellamy Brothers, and George Jones, the studio and it’s revolving door of music icons of the day was sort of like the bluegrass village that raised Roger. In his mid-teens, stage fright used to and still does, get the best of him. He remembered, “I was always nervous about playing in front of people so I’d get behind the speaker cabinet and play. They put a microphone behind there to play.” “For some reason, when you hear a banjo, you never forget it,” said Roger. This sentiment is echoed by many others in the banjo and bluegrass community – a community that Roger is very connected to. Every year, during the second week of January, banjo lovers, players, collectors, and aficionados come from all over to Knoxville, TN in the heart of the Smoky Mountains. By invitation only, the group rents out the bottom floor of the Crown Plaza Hotel for good times and good music. A different bluegrass and banjo event is the International Bluegrass Music Awards (IBMA) in Raleigh, NC. This event is host to the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. Comedian Steve Martin is well known for his love of the instrument and the genre, and in the niche banjo collector community, it only makes sense that Roger would have a story about him. Mark Johnson, a 2012 recipient of the Steve Martin Prize and close friend to
Roger Barfield, taught Martin his unique Clawgrass Banjo style over a period of years in Martin’s home in NYC, according to Roger. The first time Mark went to work with Martin, he was picked up at the airport and taken to his apartment. A tall and rather southern in essence and dress type of guy, with banjo, Martin’s security wouldn’t let him in at first. Once it was sorted out, Mark took the elevator up to find that the whole floor belonged to Steve Martin. Mark relates a further story to Roger about another meeting at Martin’s NYC home. Steve had asked Mark to change the strings out on a 1936 Gibson RB-18 banjo that belonged to the late, great John Hartford. As Steve and Mark were looking over that famous banjo, Steve asked Mark to change out the strings on the banjo. Every 5-string banjo has a “Pip” or string guide that guides the string to the tuner peg. At first, Mark declined Steve’s request to change the strings as they were probably placed there by the late John Hartford, but Steve urged him to get it done. According to Roger, “ Mark started replacing the strings when all of a sudden, he realized that the tiny string pip had gone missing. Mark said they never did find that banjo part and he was just crushed, but Steve reassured him that he would have it fixed in no time. Now, years removed from throwing bluegrass festivals and acting as the shy young member of the Chambers family band, Roger appraises and puts instruments together for people. He and his friend, Randy Wood, who owns a theater in Savannah, GA and built Elvis Presley’s famous ‘Elvis’ pearl inlay guitar, are working to build their own brand of lightweight banjos. To the unfortunate detriment of banjo picking ability, Roger was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. “That held me back from playing for about three years,” he said. “About a month ago, I had a real bad spell. I went over to the clinic and they readjusted me and for the last three weeks, I can play,” He smiled. Over the last few weeks, he’s taught himself how to play again. He even has a music studio upstairs where he records music with friend and musician, David Smith. Accompanying his wealth of banjos, Roger has guitars, like the 1960 steel guitar that he pointed out, and an 88-key piano. As he sat in his recliner reminiscing, telling stories Roger said, “I’ve been blessed. And it’s been …” his wife finished his thought, “a lot of fun.” And he agreed.

World Suites, The Bed and Biscuit, and The Country Cat House You’re going on vacation, why not send your pets on one too? That’s exactly what Dr. Vargas, owner of Orchid Springs Animal Clinic had in mind when she created World Suites, Polk County’s first-rate doggie hotel. Think the Ritz, but for Rover. Dr. Mitsie Vargas was born in the Bronx and grew up in Puerto Rico. She lived in Miami for two years which is where she met her husband. A weekend trip to visit her in-laws in Winter Haven was all she needed to fall in love with the city – that was in 1996. When she first moved to the area, she did relief for other clinics and realized, “I had certain ideas about how I wanted to practice and my husband was very encouraging and said, ‘let’s just do it together.’” The clinic started as a small practice about 1200-1500 square feet, right across the street from where it is today. Little by little, the business outgrew the space. “Then this place became for sale,” she said about their current facility. “We opened a 5000-square foot [facility], so it was exactly half of what it is right now.” “When we moved, I felt so blessed and so well received by the community,” she added. In five years’ time, Orchid Springs Animal Clinic was bursting at the seams. They expanded the building to double its size, now 10,000 square feet with the clinic space using about 5000 square feet of that space, and boarding, grooming, and daycare utilizing the other half. With her idea in mind, she worked to open the daycare and boarding. Being attached to the clinic is ideal for the pets and their owners. Dr. Vargas explained, “When the pets come in, they have a great time in daycare and then if they ever are sick, when they go to medical, it’s not such a stress on them. I think they do much better. Our patients do much better because they’re so used to coming in here not just because they’re sick, but because they wanted to be groomed or they wanted to go to daycare.” A good example of the benefit of having her clinic in the same building as daycare and boarding is a condition called Stress Colitis which gives the dogs stress-related diarrhea. “In another place, it might be not treated for days and the animal can get dehydrated and be in bad shape.” If it happens while your pet is in the care of Orchid Springs, they monitor them and if the animal hasn’t recovered in 24 hours, they will call the owner to let them know the situation and administer fluids and medicine so they don’t become dehydrated. “In that sense, they have the peace mind to know that if there is any adverse reaction to boarding or any situation that’s developing we catch it immediately and then we take care of it,” said the vet. While being boarded and at daycare, the caretakers fill out a daily observation chart for each animal, recording their bathroom, eating and drinking habits as well as demeanor. Her doggie daycare is such a hit that even her staff bring their pups into work. Dogs sitting at home all day tend to get bored and boredom leads to trouble. “A lot of dogs that havenmagazines.com
have behavioral problems, they have anxiety, they bark all day, they destroy things – it’s because they’re bored.” The daycare has three groups: a large group, mixed group, and small group. The mixed group is comprised of those gentle giants and smaller dogs that don’t mind being around bigger dogs. The inspiration for her premium dog boarding space, World Suites, came from places she’s traveled. Each room is themed after a different place around the world. From Germany, Mexico, Italy, Peru, France, Canada, London, Puerto Rico, Japan, New Orleans, and New York to Jamaica, the pups can take an international trip anywhere in the world. Each room has a 3D façade of its country and themed décor to match. In the center of the World Suites is Orchid Springs’ iconic bone-shaped doggie swimming pool. Above it, the “sky” is the perfect shade of baby blue spotted with wisps of clouds – the perfect weather to take a dip. Dr. Vargas also uses it for dog rehabilitation and weight loss. While on their staycation at World Suites, pups can enjoy DOGTV around the clock and parents can check in on their dogs via live cameras in each room. The Bed and Biscuit is Orchid Springs’ standard boarding and The Country Cat House is a cattery where animals of the feline variety can roam freely in a noise insulated room or stay in their cage. And if you’re reading this wondering where in the world to leave your pet parrot or ferret while you’re snorkeling in Fiji for a week, don’t worry they board exotic pets too! Dr. Vargas has created such an inviting and caring space to board animals and a clinic equally impressive backing it up. In fact, Dr. Mitsie Vargas was awarded Florida Veterinarian of the Year by the Florida Veterinary Medical Associate in April of this year. About the award, she said, “I was very grateful and humbled and just very appreciative because it was my colleges, my professional peers that decided that.” The veterinarian does her part to contribute to the welfare of animals everywhere, not just the ones in her care. During the hurricane, she and her clients were able to pull together ten pallets of food and supplies including 2000 pounds of dog food, and five generators to Puerto Rico. At the suggestion of one of her clients named Fay Wood, Dr. Vargas created a stray animal fund call “We Love Pets.” This fund gives the clinic the financial means to help an average of 300 animals a year according to the doctor. Another client hand makes miniature pet beds that are for sale at the clinic with proceeds going to that fund.
