Happy February & Happy Valentine’s Day! This month we’ve compiled a list of 50 things to do in and around Polk County whether you’re on a date or hanging with friends. From sunsets to spa days, we’ve got you covered. With that said, love is in the air! Or at least Sally Del Castillo is! Read about her trip to Jump Florida Skydive in Lake Wales and then go online to watch the video of her jump at havenmagazines.com. Are you brave enough to try? Maybe paddleboarding is more your speed? We talk with Kami from Paddleboard Winter Haven. Learn how she got started and how you can give it a try. I’d like to introduce our newest writer, Beth L. Koop! She visits Webb’s Candy to see how their iconic citrus candy is made and gives us the scoop. We visit Cocoa Cake Studio in Lake Wales. Voted Best Bakery in Lake Wales by our Haven readers, we hear her story about why she chose Lake Wales and plans for the future. Our Top Ten lists will keep you busy this month, as well as our calendar. Visit online to see the full calendar (we’re always adding to it!) and sign in to add your events for all to see. As for our cover, do you know where we snapped that pic?

History Comes Alive Alfia River Rendezvous is billed as the largest pre-1840 living history encampment in the US. In late January, visitors were able to spend the day experiencing what life was like. The event spread over 300 acres in the Homeland area just off US 17 between Bartow and Fort Meade. The ARR is a fundraiser for the Florida Frontiersmen, a non-profit historical preservation org.
Black Hawk Pilot “Crossroads: Bartow Teacher To Deploy In Change In Rural Wants You To February America” Walk Alex Vacha, the airport manager for the Winter Haven Regional Airport has been called to serve. The Polk County History Center is hosting this Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibit. Along with the exhibit, there will be programs highlighting the rural years in Polk County.
Funds Allocation Goodbye To A Discussed Local Legend
Brad Dantzler Chosen As Mayor
The Winter Haven Community Redevelopment Agency’s Florence Villa Advisory Committee met in January to discuss how to spend around $50,000 of money that has yet to be allocated. Suggestions included building sidewalks on Sears Ave. NE and Avenue P NE and micro loans to encourage economic development.
Each January, members of the Winter Haven City Commission cast ballots to determine their leaders. Dantzler won on a 3-2 vote, with Commissioner Pete Chichetto nominating Commissioner William Twyford for the top spot. Mayor Pro-Tem Nathaniel J. Birdsong, Jr. was elected for a seventh time, with his selection coming in a unanimous vote.

She was first elected in 2005.
The Good News Bell
Elderly Service Up 48 Percent
In Oct. of 2017, Ronald Sofield became a patient of the Bond Clinic & Research center when he was diagnosed with colon cancer. After Mr. Sofield completed his treatment, he decided it was time to help people celebrate good news. He ordered an old-fashioned alarm bell to hang in the clinic and named it “The Good News Bell.” Mr. Sofield was the first to ring the bell with news of a clean scan, no evidence of cancer.
Between April 1 and Sept. 30, 2018, services to the elderly and disabled who use the para transit door-to-door service from the Citrus Connection increased 48 percent. Area residents rode fixedroute buses 187, 038 times on Winter Haven routes, down one percent from the previous year. The implementation of “smart cards” allowed Citrus Connection staff to document local bus services more accurately.

WORDS & PHOTOGRAPH Tara Crutchfield Happy Valentine’s Day, Polk County! Amidst the wining and dining, roses and cards, and those gross little candy hearts wouldn’t you like to give the gift of an experience this month to your significant other, new fling, or as a treat to yourself? In honor of this lovely holiday, we’ve compiled a list of 50 date ideas in Polk County. From the City of Swans to The Chain of Lakes there’s plenty to do whether you’re outdoorsy, creative, a sports fanatic, artsy, or anything in between. Some are perfect for making an impression on a first date and others are ideal for the couple who have been married for forty years – try one or try them all. Now go have fun, you crazy kids!
1. go skydiving Is there anything more romantic than jumping out of an airplane thousands of feet in the sky? Florida Skydiving Center in Lake Wales offers jumps for newbies and experienced jumpers. Adrenaline junkies can make their first tandem jump from 11,000 feet all the way up to 18,000 feet. Florida Skydiving Center even has a team of videographers so that you love birds can commemorate the occasion.
2. shop a local record store The kind of music a person likes can tell you a lot about them. apparent. He kept describing his customer base as his “tribe.” He explained, “Our tribe at The Book Shelter are those customers who feel like the store is “their store.” They tell their friends, they come just to hang out. The store has become a relationship, not just a place to shop.”

The Book Shelter In March of 2018, husband and wife entrepreneurs, Sam and Jacqui Terry opened a small used book store in downtown Lake Wales. You may have seen the sign on the roads around town, “The Book Shelter, Google It!” That would be them – a charming storefront nestled in the Rhodesbilt Arcade. Their name, The Book Shelter, pays homage to their mission – to save used books. Sam Terry moved to Lake Wales from Kansas in 2009. With a degree in Sports Management, he pursued an internship at the local YMCA. While in Lake Wales he met his now wife Jacqui. During his internship, he decided he wanted to make a little side money and started selling books online. He has since turned his side hustle into a business selling books on Amazon. TURNING A PAGE WITH THEIR BUSINESS With rising Amazon seller fees, he was having to pass on selling books that havenmagazines.com
were very popular but wouldn’t be profitable online. “We knew they were books that people still wanted, so we decided to start a book store,” he said.
Discussing just how he’s been able to build his “tribe” of customers, now over 1,000 accounts at the store, Sam referenced Seth Godin’s book, Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable, saying, “It’s all about being unique.”
Almost a decade later, Sam and Jacqui have four children and a budding used book store. In a time when big box stores and online giants seem to be pushing local stores by the wayside, Sam says he disagrees with the notion that bookstores are a dying breed. He’s found the recipe for success, saying, “The cool thing for us is we’re not really competing with Amazon.”
Going into it, Sam and Jacqui knew they wanted to take the Purple Cow approach to make The Book Shelter remarkable. To get people talking about their new store, they became specific with what they stocked, lining the shelves with over 10,000 popular, sought after books.
They still sell books on Amazon and The Book Shelter seems to be a way to fill a community need for in-demand books, and a way for Sam and Jacqui to supplement their Amazon business – a perfect marriage of online and retail.
They’ve put customer appreciation at the core of their business. Along with weekly deals on their Facebook page, they have a program called The Book Hero Academy for elementary school students. Students can get a book from the store for free. After they read it, if they post a video book review on their parent’s Facebook page, they can return to The Book Shelter for another free book.
DISCOVERING THEIR TRIBE As Sam talked about his business, his customer-centric attitude was 24
Patrons receive 5 cents back for every dollar spent, along with a referral program offering $2 posted to your account for every person you refer. If you find a book containing a bookmark with a silverfish character on it, you get that book for free. If you’re looking to trade up for some new additions to your library, The Book Shelter accepts trade-ins as well. Currently, they are most interested in non-fiction, newer fiction, elementary, young adult and comics. BESIDES THE BOOKS Another passion project of the Terrys’, outside of their literatureladen shelves, is a youth ministry slated to open downtown. A group of volunteers with “a passion to help teenagers” are working to have the youth center, called Gospel, open in March. According to Sam, “The focus first and foremost is the gospel. Our goal is to provide teenagers with a safe place to learn, create, hang out, and be loved. We will offer different groups for students to be involved in. Those will include Bible studies, creative writing, board games, basketball, video games, ultimate frisbee, art, and music.” Sam feels strongly about the importance of this youth ministry,

saying that there has not been one in Lake Wales for over five years. “In that time, we have seen a large amount of teens who are living with very little support from parents or families. Their lives lack consistency,” he said. “These kids really need something that they can count on. We want to provide a place where they feel like they belong and feel that even if life is crazy there are people who care about them, but most importantly that God cares about them.” He is so committed to Gospel that The Book Shelter will be donating money to the youth ministry and may use their store to do on the job training. “We aren’t quite sure how they will fit together but they will be located right across the hall from each other so there will be a lot of interaction,” he said.

Shoppe. Linda Vinesett, the owner of Petals, and her staff graciously put aside the flowers that don’t meet the quality level for their arrangements. Instead of these flowers being thrown away, their beauty gets to shine in a unique preserved way. These natural beauties may not make the grade for quality floral arrangements, but they have colorful essence that make a lasting mark in art. As an invited artist to Walt Disney World, I also am fortunate to use trimmings of plants grown in the Disney nursery and ones that have been placed all around the parks once they are no longer “magical” enough to be displayed. My biggest “pinchme moments” of access at Disney occur when I get to use plants that are harvested from the greenhouses at the Living with the Land attraction in EPCOT. It is exciting to walk behind the scenes with Les Frey, horticulturist and the Student Program Manager of Agricultural Sciences at Epcot, and choose from such a diverse palette of color and texture. Living with the Land is a zero-waste facility and I am honored to be even a tiny part of their mission. Q: Tell us about your pottery. What items do you make, how would you describe your aesthetic?
A Q & A with Artist Rachelle Eason Q: Tell us about yourself! When did you first get into art?
that you would normally use a blank book.
A: I have been an artist all my life. My passion for art began with art lessons at the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh in my early childhood. That passion for art was fueled by being a student at The Ellis School in Pittsburgh, PA. During middle school and high school, I had the privilege to learn and explore mono-printing techniques, batik, drawing, painting, silversmithing, and further my passion for clay. In college, I started selling my art in small shows and stepped that up a notch in graduate school by participating in juried art shows.
My plant-staining journey began in 2006 on our farm in North Carolina. I was given some freshly-sheared wool from my friend on a nearby farm. I attempted to dye the wool by boiling it with fruits and leaves from our persimmon trees, held in place by a piece of paper and a rock. Although the wool did not dye, the paper did. I began experimenting with all types of plants from around the farm. Shortly after, I opened a pottery studio and decided to put my plant-staining discovery aside to focus on my thriving new business. Several years later, my family and I moved to Florida and I finally gave myself the time I needed to fully explore the possibilities of ecostaining. I conducted countless hours of research alongside hands-on trial and error, and started to understand the science, as well as the required techniques, to develop the process into an art.
Q: Tell us about your plant stained paper. How did you discover it? A: I design each one-of-a-kind paper piece by creating lovely color and patterns using fresh leaves, flowers, seeds, and other natural elements. The papers and plant elements are pressed then boiled for several hours. After cooling, I peel the flowers and leaves off; the papers emerge from the process stained with the enchanting beauty of nature...each piece unique. The finished papers are used as art pieces, journals, photo albums, sketchbooks and more; for any reason
A: As an adult, most of my art has revolved around pottery. I have always loved the form and texture of ceramic pieces and the added functionality of unique vessels just blows me away. My pottery style for commissioned pieces has evolved into a sort of 3D scrapbooking in a way. Mugs are my favorite. With the emphasis on function for the base form, I love to sculpt added elements that are more than decoration and mean something to the user. Perhaps influenced most by my plantstaining, my pottery takes on a strong nature aesthetic. One of the new collections I am working on is heavily influenced by nature and organic forms. The other collection I am creating is all about color. As much as I love plant-staining, I am limited with the depth of resulting colors which are muted compared to the actual plants. In pottery, I can go crazy with glaze colors! I am, and always have been, obsessed with purple, so this new collection is a study in deep rich glaze colors with an emphasis on purples.
Q: Where do you get the flowers and plants for it? How do you choose which ones will be right for the piece?
Q: Where do you draw inspiration from?
A: Many of the flowers are provided by a small business with a long history in Lakeland: Petals, The Flower
A: Nature is my favorite setting and my journal is my sounding board, my 27
brainstorming companion. It is my voice from a different perspective. When I write, I change. I evolve. Never again will I be the same as I was when I wrote those words. By having those thoughts written down, I can look back and see what I was thinking and analyze the path I took between then and now. Since I began this journey of ecostaining, I have grown. My journal is my evidence of growth. I don’t write diaries. They are not word for word accounts of what I do. My journal writings are reflective and descriptive. I get inspired to write and when I return to read them, I get inspired in a different way. That inspiration keeps me focused on my goals. Q: How can we be involved? A: At the Polk Museum of Art I teach a variety. This spring I am teaching Journaling with Art and Words and Elements of Art where we will experiment with a variety of techniques as students learn about the seven foundation elements of art including line, color, shape, form, value, space, and texture. In both classes we will be exploring techniques with watercolor paints and pencils, pen and ink, and drawing. In conclusion: It takes bravery and a village to be an artist; to put your voice out their to be heard. It is more than a career. It is a way of life that starts at the core and exudes to encompass everyone around. That is why I am so passionate about our community buying local art and supporting artists. Artists are residents contributing their unique voice to the community and that enriches us all. rachelleeason.com FB @rachelleeasonartist IG @rachelle_eason_artist

The 48th Annual Lake Wales Arts Festival Load up the family and make your way to the Shores of Lake Wailes for this season’s must-attend art event. An almost half-century’s old tradition, this year marks The 48th Annual Lake Wales Arts Festival presented by Citizens Bank & Trust and hosted by Lake Wales Arts Council. Over 100 world-class artists have been selected to display their work at the festival and compete for more than $22,000. The event, drawing thousands every year, will commence with their annual ART-B-Que Kickoff Party on Friday, February 22nd. Admission for the kickoff party is $15 for adults and $10 for students. According to current Board President of the Lake Wales Arts Council and Chair of the Art Festival this year, Erica O’Neil, the theme for the Kickoff Party will be New Orleans, Mardi Gras-style as the event is the weekend proceeding Mardi Gras. Along with delicious barbeque and the excitement of the Arts Festival under way, the Jazz Phools will be coming from Tampa to provide entertainment for the evening. The Arts Festival running from Saturday, February 23rd through
Sunday February 24th, is free to attend and promises a gamut of talented artist displaying mediums including clay and porcelain, digital, drawing and pastels, fiber, fine crafts, glass, graphics and printmaking, jewelry, mixed media, painting (oil and acrylic), painting (watercolors), photography, sculpture, and wood.
highlight this year includes a special exhibit tent displaying works from the Arts Festival and Student Art Show judges. The Festival is partnering with The Family Literacy Academy of Lake Wales for the children’s tent which will include plenty of arts and activities for little ones. “It’s a great opportunity for parents to start exposing their children to various art forms and opening their eyes to that world of art because that is something that is important to start early,” said O’Neil.
Top artists will be competing for over $22,000 in prizes for categories including Best of Show, Judge’s Award for Exceptional Work, Award of Excellence, Award of Distinction, and Award of Merit.
O’Neil discussed the event’s significance as an opportunity to expose the community to fine art, saying, “It has been such a staple to the community that it’s been woven into the tradition of Lake Wales.”
Festival-goers can enrich their own art collections by purchasing any of the work for sale ranging in medium and price to fit their taste and budget. There will be food available and live entertainment as you admire the exhibits and enjoy the festivities, including music from some of the local school ensembles performing on Sunday.
The LWAC Board President added that she disagrees with the notion that smaller communities such as Lake Wales, compared to that of Orlando or Tampa, don’t have as much exposure to the arts. “This festival is a fun way to provide the community with a higher level of art,” she said.
The LWAC has a Student Art Show running the month of February, the winners of which will have their art displayed.
Executive Director of the Arts Council, Andrew Allen is excited to be working for the first time on the Arts Festival.

Have your cake and eat it too Born and raised in Lake Wales, Rachel Cullen has had a sweet tooth for as long as she can remember. She loved baking so much that whenever her mom would get a babysitter for her and instruct her not to do any baking while she was gone, the little baking rebel would pull out her ABC Cookbook and do it anyway.
true chocoholic, so it fit.”
In high school, recurring visits from Johnson & Wales University representatives gave Cullen the itch to attend their school, which she eventually did.
The family operation doesn’t end at Cocoa Cake Studio. Rachel’s father has owned Mayer Jewelers on the same street for over four decades. Rachel’s sister also plans to open her own space on Stuart Street where she will be doing lash extensions, massage, facials, and waxing.
From start to finish, Cullen said, “It was a family project to get here.” Her husband did much of the renovation work, her sister helped decorate, her parents babysat her little one, and her best friend helped fold boxes on opening day.
Her foray into the culinary realm was during an internship at a Lakeland bakery two days a week where she’d help make cakes, pies, cheesecakes, and other goodies. From there, she moved on to a Lake Wales café, saying, “I liked the industry, but I definitely wanted to specify in baking.”
When you walk into Cocoa Cake Studio, you’re stepping into the exact vision Rachel Cullen had for her bake shop. Everything from the “dainty pink walls” (it took several shades of pink to find the perfect one) to the rolling pin door handle, fits into her entrepreneurial dream. “I probably couldn’t have envisioned it any better,” she said. “It’s very dainty but clean, a little old stuff, a little new stuff.”
A NOT SO HALF-BAKED IDEA Her bakery has been in the planning for over two years now. Meanwhile, Cullen and her husband welcome a son into the world who is also almost two.
The bakery had a soft opening in October of last year, followed by their grand opening in January. Cullen and family felt the full force of community support at the grand opening with hungry patrons standing wall to wall. Even with a selection of free food for people to try, they instead opted to get in line to buy goods.
After working in the corporate world for over 15 years, Rachel remembers coming to her husband one day to ask how he felt about selling their house, moving back to Lake Wales, and starting her dream bakery. He agreed, and Lake Wales has gotten a little sweeter because of it. Cullen said, “There was never a question once I decided that this is what I wanted to do there was no going back.”
SUGAR RUSH Opening the door of the cake studio, the sugary fragrance of frosting and various other treats was intoxicating. Known for her beautiful cakes, Cullen also offers single slices of their best-selling double chocolate cake and gluten-free chocolate truffle cake. Cupcakes, brownies, peanut butter bars, pie slices, tarts and pies, cream puffs, cookies, muffins, scones, coffee cakes, and bundt cakes sit invitingly in her display cases.
FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND FROSTING The family set to work renovating their Stuart Ave. locale from a what was formerly a retail monogram shop into a functioning kitchen and darling bakery. When it came time to name the bakery, many of her friends and family wanted her to incorporate her own name, but Cullen liked ‘Cocoa.’ She smiled, “I’m a

“I listen to what people are asking for and then if I can I try to accommodate that. I want to make what I know people want,” said the baker. If something isn’t selling, she’ll play around with the flavor or eighty-six it from the menu completely because customer happiness is paramount to Cullen. Without divulging too much top-secret information, I asked Rachel what makes a really good cake. Her answer – quality butter, and more importantly, quality vanilla. Vanilla is such a dyer ingredient that she makes her own by soaking vanilla beans in vodka for a couple of weeks. “That way I know it’s good and I know what’s in it,” she said. Though her business is in its infancy, Cullen has big plans for the bakery. She discussed extending her hours in the near future, the possibility of offering hot breakfast sandwiches, the idea of a monthly tea, and her first cupcake decorating class on January 26th. She’d like to eventually branch out into different versions of the class for kids and adults. You can sign up for her classes through the Cocoa Cake Studio Facebook page or by calling the shop. Cullen loves being part of the downtown business community full of neat little shops and boutiques. “It’s just kind of fun to help revitalize downtown Lake Wales,” she said. “I think that this first year is going to be the hardest just learning the ins and outs, but it’s also so exciting,” Cullen said. “This has been a dream.” The icing on top of this sweet saga is that you too can have a taste of the Cocoa Cake Studio dream by stopping in the bakery for a tasty pick-me-up. L VE IS IN THE AIR… Or in my case... on the ground waiting for you. I would have never guessed when I woke up this morning that I would: A) Be going on a date. B) With anyone besides my husband. C) That it would possibly be 14,000 feet in the sky. The phone call from the Canadian went like this, “Hey Nando, it’s Jordy. Frenchie and I thought we would kidnap Sally to come watch him skydive in Lake Wales and then go do a little thrifting. As it turns out... you should probably get over here to Florida Skydiving Center. Sebastien has talked your wife into jumping with him!” Now, Nando is used to these two characters getting me into situations but this was a little much for him. He, like other skeptics said, “Jordy, why would Sally ever want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane? She’s got more sense than that.” While the Frenchman danced around getting ready to put on his harness and ascend for the eighth solo jump of his life, the wind picked up. Betty, who runs the place and has owned skydiving centers since the 1970’s said, “Sebastien, no matter how qualified you think you are, with these winds, you can’t jump today. Make an appointment and come back tomorrow.” I was wearing cowboy boots anyway, which isn’t the preferred shoe for skydiving. We were off the hook, but I was intrigued by something I had never even thought about or considered. When we got home I said, “Nando, do you want to do a tandem jump with me tomorrow?” “No way!” He said, and the look on his face made us laugh. “Are you sure Nando?” I said. “100 percent! I think you all are crazy. I really don’t want you to do it either Sally. Sebastien and Jordy, it’s one thing to take my wife thrifting and out to lunch, but you can’t just take her jumping out of airplanes. She is not joining your international flight crew.”
As hard as he tried to sweet talk Betty and after sitting there for 4 hours we realized once again there would be no skydiving without an appointment. Whether I jumped or not, I had decided I would write my article about skydiving. Betty instructed Sebastien, “Monday, you and your crew can go to our other facility in Plant City and meet Pip at 10 am. He will jump with you. Sally, you think about it and if you want to do it, come back next weekend. We will video you skydiving so you have a picture of you doing it for your article.” Plant City had a completely different vibe than the Olympic feel of Lake Wales. It was more like a cool campground. The Cessna 900 was being washed and serviced on the grass in front of the picnic tables. People were sitting around talking of the days jump. Parachutes were hanging from the ceiling, a big TV was there to watch your footage from the jump and it seemed to me this place was more Sebastien’s crowd. People come from all over the world and stay here just to skydive. They start in the morning and jump over and over again perfecting their free fall and canopy skills, gaining confidence and of course landing and folding the parachute properly. That is something that comes after everyone’s first jump, which most of the time is tandem with an instructor like Pip. He has over 20,000 jumps. I was pretty sure that on Saturday I was going jump. I couldn’t talk about it too much or I would get nervous and start telling myself I wasn’t. Look guys, I’m a Costume Designer. I dress actors and design T-shirts… I do Zumba and ride a pony horse. I am not a daredevil on any scale.
I thought, I just might…
Saturday morning, I called and made an appointment with Betty. At noon I was going to jump or cancel at the last minute. Either way… Nando, my love, was more nervous than I and all he was going to be doing was standing on the ground watching with Sebastien. They would possibly “go live” on Instagram if I could teach them how to use it on the way there.
The next morning, Jordy had an actual flight back to Canada so, Nando and I headed back to Lake Wales with Sebastien. (He refused to make an appointment.) He thought he’d just show up in his posh flight suit being French and they’d let him on the next flight.
I put on my cutest… what I considered to look like a skydiving outfit, waterproof mascara, grabbed my sparkly Yeti Cup and pushed myself to get in the car. I thought, oh man… if I’m this nervous just getting in the car to go there how am I going to get myself to climb on a

plane and then jump out of it? I’ll tell you how. I signed my waver, got secured into a harness and Pip had a Go Pro camera on his wrist. Pip began filming… got me all hyped up saying things like, let’s go skydiving Sally…held my hand and escorted me through a whiff of jet fuel to the plane. The pilot took off in a blink of an eye, and we were flying. I was sweatypalmed holding on to what I was calling in my head the “Oh sh**! bar” trying to suppress my mile a minute heart beat so I could enjoy the one-way flight. I would not be on the plane going back down. The plane kept climbing higher and I was thinking, Isn’t that high enough? I think we would be fine to jump from here. But no, we kept escalating. In the cabin, there was not much talking other than preoperational conversation between the other tandem couple and the 2 Sebastien types that were going to be jumping solo. Next thing I knew…. harnesses were getting hooked up. Altimeters were being double checked… straps were being snugly pulled. Pip put goggles on me like the jockeys wear for horse racing. He prepped me on a few last minute positions, filmed a second where you can visibly tell I am freaking out, but trying to look cute and act cool. Then the high fives started. Sebastien told me that everyone starts high fiving right before they jump. Lights turned green and first two headed out the side door. I felt like we were soldiers about to be dropped for a mission. Off they went and then the other tandem group jumped. Being the last ones, we slid down the leather bench to the “Exit.” My feet were dangling out of the plane which was moving at 120 mph. I kept saying in my head, if President George Bush did it at 90, I can do it. Then we fell out of the plane. It was kind of like diving into water, you go in and it takes a minute to actually adjust. Well, in my case, breathe because I was in shock and forgot to keep my head up like Sebastien and Pip had told me a hundred times. What was probably seconds of free falling and trying to believe what I was actually doing, felt like minutes then all of a sudden…a rush of clarity, peace and quiet. Pip, with his British accent had gone from yelling so I could hear him, to - CONTINUE ON PAGE 36 -

speaking normally. He said, “That’s it! What do you think Sally?” “Did the parachute open?” I asked? “Of course it did! Look up at the canopy.” I took a huge breath and remembered being told, when you’re relaxed you notice more.
her know that I had survived. She, who has only gone skydiving once in her life, wasn’t surprised but smiled and said, “Great, now you’ve done it!” My amateur “Instagram live filmers” managed to kill the feed during my 5 star landing, but they had a champagne picnic planned on the farm to celebrate. I crossed something off of my bucket list that hadn’t even been on it in the first place, but should have been.
I began looking for our Lake Wales cattle farm amongst the array of green orange groves and brown patchwork of earth below us. Our feet were just hanging there; Pip was singing Baa Baa Black Sheep as we drifted over a sheep farm. We talked about things like how Nando and I met and ended up in Polk County. Now I was a real “snowbird.” We were frozen in time just floating carefree visiting and viewing from above things that I had seen a million times but never like this. I was overcome with relief and awe as well as surprise when we landed perfectly on our bums like the feather in “Forrest Gump.”
It was a perfect dream day… filled with every emotion on the spectrum. I will say that like Betty, I don’t know if I need to do it again but… I think everyone should do it at least once. Or be like Cowboy Nando and have your wife do it so you can vicariously experience it and brag about her to all your friends. From Our International Flight Crew... I guess I didn’t even realize he was filming. I was in such a dream and when we landed it was like I woke up. I hugged and kissed Pip as he gathered up the canopy and we proudly marched towards Nando and Sebastien. Me wearing a smile that probably blinded them as much as the sun.
Special Thanks to Jump Florida Skydiving, which in my video I call by 10 different names. I was so flustered, lol.
Nando hugged me. He was so happy to have me back. Sebastien high fived me and called me an “Unidentified Flying Sally” and then said, “Now you know. I told you that you would like it.”
P.S. I had thought of going into details and all the steps leading up to the jump but…. In the words of Sebastien, you’ll see.
I kind of just kept following Pip to drop off the parachute to be repacked. I felt like I was his wingman. I was in a way, loopy. Hmmm… a natural high? Or “On Cloud Nine?” Pip had said to me, “Whatever happens in the sky stays in the sky!” I loved that. He was a pleasure and made sure I was safe.

Webb’ s Candy Store The rainbow-colored trail past the Peppermint Stick Forest, Gum Drop Mountain and the Molasses Swamp leads to Webb’s Candy Store, a Davenport sweet spot for generations.
the family expanded it in the 1980s. “He thought this piece of land was a good investment and he was right,” he said. The family then expanded into the real estate business in 1995 establishing Webb’s Realty next door to the candy store. Like his father, R.J. said he grew up helping around the store, which gave him the good work ethic he has today.
In 1945, Paul V. Webb and his wife, Nadine started a candy factory in Mayville, New York after he finished his service with General Patton’s 3rd Army in World War II. At the time, the factory was making all-day lollipops, which were shipped to fairs and festivals throughout the country. The factory churned out more than 5,000 lollipops every day. “They could not make them fast enough. They had three eighthour shifts and they were going around the clock at one point,” said Paul’s grandson, R.J., who is the third generation manager of the family store on Highway 27.
“I was never allowed to sit around and play video games. If I wasn’t at school or playing sports, I was brought up here to work maintenance with Brian or scoop ice cream with Sharon,” he said. “Free time was limited, which taught me how to work and deal with a lot of different situations.” Today the Webb’s Candy Store continues to thrive still making sweets the old-fashioned way by cooking on the same gas stoves and copper kettles that were used at the original factory. All the ice cream, fudge and chocolates are still made and packaged by hand at the factory. But R. J. attributes the store’s devoted employees as the cherry on top of the Webb Candy Store success story. Many of the employees have been with the business for more than 20 years. “The employees are a part of the family in this family business,” he said. “Webb’s would not be Webb’s without them.”
In the early 1970s, Paul and Nadine decided to become snowbirds. But Paul wanted to stay busy in Florida so the couple bought C.S. Taylor Tropical Sweets, a citrus candy factory in downtown Davenport, which had been in operation since 1932. The candy factory grew out of a small tearoom operated by two women who were encouraged by customers to begin manufacturing their homemade citrus candy. That business became Sundial Tropical Sweets.
Webb’s Candy 38217 US-27, Davenport, FL 33837 (863) 422-1051 800-289-9322
When the Webb family purchased the factory, they combined the C.S. Taylor recipes with the Webb’s recipes from the New York to make a variety of delicious confections from creamy goat milk fudge to luscious, hand-dipped chocolates, crunchy peanut brittle, and the famous citrus candy. Paul and Nadine’s youngest child and R.J.’s father, John was the only sibling that moved south with his parents. John had worked at the candy factory in New York, which eventually expanded to a bowling alley, motel and restaurant and is still in existence today and operated by the Webb family.
Open everyday from 8 a.m. - 9 p.m.
John eventually managed the Florida candy factory and in the late 1970s the business was relocated to its current location on Highway 27 on property that had been purchased years before. While there was very little traffic on the road at the time, R.J. said his grandfather knew the customers would eventually find them. The candy store became so popular that

WhatSUP with Paddleboarding in Winter Haven? Instructor, coach, and owner of Paddleboard Winter Haven, Kami Rickert has always been a part of the water community. As soon as she was old enough to become a lifeguard, she did. That lead her to teach water safety through the Red Cross and eventually train people to become lifeguards themselves. Born in Pennsylvania, Kami spent 20 years living in Fort Lauderdale. There, she tried out different water sports, like surfing for example. “It was not going so well,” she joked. Then paddleboarding came along – she was hooked. Her job in Fort Lauderdale had an office near the beach. She bought her own paddle board, remembering, “I could go out on the beach, go for a paddle, and then go right to work.” This daily workout was not only good for her body but a calming pastime for Kami. Her dedication to the sport led her to get her certification through the ACA (American Canoe Association). This, she says, gave her a plethora of good ideas on how she could help people learn to paddleboard. “Having the course really helped me a lot with all the safety aspects of actual paddleboarding itself whether it’s in the ocean, on the river, or the wonderful Chain of Lakes that we have here,” she said. She started a small company in Fort Lauderdale called Let’s Paddle Out which was comprised of just three boards. With them, she’d teach private lessons and work with other local companies during paddle boarding events. In 2016, when she found out that Audrey Nettlow who started Paddleboard Winter Haven was looking for someone to take it over, Kami jumped on the opportunity and moved to Winter Haven. ABOUT PADDLEBOARD WINTER HAVEN Paddleboard Winter Haven specializes in all things SUP (stand-up paddleboarding). Their certified instructors can take you on a number of tours for any skill level, as well as private paddleboard parties, corporate “board” meetings, yoga on the water, and PaddleFit workouts, which Kami recently became certified in. They are also the one-stop-shop for boards, paddles, and water accessories. The business is mobile, allowing them to take advantage of which lake has the best weather conditions for paddleboarding on a given day. Because Winter Haven is home to the stunning Chain of Lakes, often times tourgoers have the opportunity to see two, sometimes three lakes during a session.
havenmagazines.com
A menu of their tours includes The Pirate Tour which is only available on days they are able to go out on Lake Summit and watch the Legoland Ski Show. Another is The Eco Tour which starts on either Lake Summit or Lake Roy, taking paddleboarders through Lake Eloise and LuLu. The tour explores the best of Central Florida’s wildlife and ecosystem. The Sunset tour offers paddlers the chance to see the indescribable beauty of a Chain of Lakes sunset. All of Paddleboard Winter Haven’s tours include a lesson. They help paddlers find the right paddleboard, teach where to stand on the board and the best way to transition from kneeling to standing. As the tour progresses, instructors will get the paddlers involved in changing their stroke from the typical “shoulder paddle” in which you use your arms to power you through the water, to a stroke that involves your core muscles to move the board. A BOARD OF YOUR VERY OWN To Kami, a paddleboard is an investment. She wants everyone to find the board that will make them the most comfortable and gets them out on the water often. “There are different sizes of boards. Depending on your height, weight, and what you’re planning to use it for can determine what board you want to get,” she explained. Paddleboard Winter Haven offers new and used boards as well as a “try before you buy” experience during which Kami gets as much info about the person before meeting them at the lake with potential board options. “We’ll look at the different boards that I have, look at the different price ranges, see what’s fitting your budget and then actually take you out on the water to make sure that the board is fitting your needs and that you feel comfortable on it,” said Rickert. COMMUNITY MATTERS If you follow the Paddleboard Winter Haven Facebook page, you’ll notice they post their weekend event schedule. They do this as an invitation to anyone who has their own paddleboard to join in their festivities for a chance to have fun and meet other paddleboarders. “It’s not just about our business, it’s about trying to grow the paddleboard community,” Kami said, urging, “If you have your own equipment come join us!” A COMPETITIVE EDGE When she isn’t giving paddleboard tours, the Paddleboard Winter Haven owner is a coach for the
42
Polk Special Olympics. Their Polk Special Olympic SUP season runs from early May to late August. They plan to have their SUP Invitational again in July this year and will be looking at adding new athletes to the team in April. Any parents interested in getting their athletes involved can contact Kami at Paddleboard Winter Haven. As for Kami’s personal paddleboarding escapades she says, “This last year I finally got into paddleboard racing. It was my first year, it’s something that I always wanted to do.” By chance, she found a group in Winter Park that does small races and she fell in love, even getting some local paddleboarders involved. At her first ever racing event, an inaugural paddle race in New Smyrna, she won in her category. A woman who had trained at Paddleboard Winter Haven’s race clinics last summer competed in her first race in September and took the podium, winning third-place in her category. Race clinics with Paddleboard Winter Haven will start back up this summer for anyone interested in the competitive side of the sport. LET’S PADDLE OUT Does Kami have any advice for new paddlers? “Yes, come out and give it a try!” She expressed, “It is a sport that I’ve found to be very, very wide-ranging – athletic ability, balance ability – we will ask you questions, we’ll find out your height, we’ll find out your weight and put you on the right board for you.” And if you’re worried about falling in the water, don’t be. Though they would like everyone who comes out to know some swimming basics, they do provide life jackets and Kami continues to keep up with her certified training in water safety. “For me, it’s not just about getting people out on the water. It’s getting people out there safely. I want you to have a great first experience,” she said. “People really should give it a try. If you’re thinking about it, turn it into something that you’re going to do,” encouraged Kami. Following her retirement, Cormier followed a new path as an artist, beginning in 2012. Over the past six years, she has exhibited widely throughout Florida and has been awarded with numerous “Best of Shows” and other major honors. WILLIAM SCHAAF: THE WAY OF THE EQUINE When: Feb. 01 - June 08, 2019 Where: Polk Museum of Art 800 E Palmetto St., Lakeland. polkmuseumofart.org For many years, Bill Schaaf has explored equine imagery in his paintings and sculpture. The horse figure as an iconic metaphor for power, sensuality, transition and beauty has occupied a dominant place in his visual vocabulary. At times, the figures are relatively representational; but more often than not, take on a form that is derived from the idea of a horse, yet defining new ways of interpreting the glorious nature of these animals that have partnered with humankind since virtually the dawn of civilization. (863) 688-7743 THE ART OF WILL BARNET: SELECTIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION When: Feb. 01 through March 10, 2019 Where: Polk Museum of Art 800 E Palmetto St., Lakeland. polkmuseumofart.org Will Barnet (1911-2012) was an American original. With more than 80 one-man exhibitions at major institutions like the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney, and the Guggenheim and a body of work that, despite its stylistic variety, is always recognizably his own, Barnet achieved wide acclaim during his lifetime. In this installation of 22 recently gifted and loaned works by Barnet from the permanent collection, we can begin to see why.Indeed, Barnet forged a unique path through 20th century art history. At once a dedicated realist and figurative artist when pure abstraction was the norm and an experimenter in abstraction when other artists renewed their interest in representation, Barnet defied expectations about how modern artists should produce art, refusing to bend to the whims of any contemporary trends. Refreshed. Rejuvenated. Rejoice!
A good night’s sleep or a relaxing vacation may be all it takes to make you feel rejuvenated. But if you need a bit more than that to reduce puffiness or sagging around your eyes, or to restore vision affected by drooping eyelids, you can count on us. Heart of Florida Physician Group offers cosmetic facial procedures that minimize the signs of aging, including eyelid surgery. To schedule a consultation appointment with fellowship-trained plastic surgeon Tutu Cheng, M.D., call 863-223-4737 or visit MyHOFPlasticSurgery.com to schedule online.
Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center is owned in part by physicians.
