Happy February! Last month, we asked our readers on Facebook to send us their love stories. We’ve chosen 6 to share with you. They are inspiring, cute, tearful and so, so sweet. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as we did! This month we feature an old-school candy factory, a beautiful event venue that’s surrounded by orange groves and our friends from Winner Haven Apparel talk to us about the Airstream they’ve turned into a mobile shop. We sample the food at the Winter Haven Country Club and travel to the Terrace Hotel for a romantic staycation. Theatre Winter Haven is putting on a special play in honor of Black History Month and we learn all about it. We also talk about the upcoming CommunityFest and how you can get involved. It’s the shortest month, but it’s our biggest calendar so far! Our “Top Ten” highlights all of the bbq festivals happening in February, maybe we’ll see you at one of them!

Welcoming

You can find us at havenmagazines.com and add your event to the calendar or comment on stories. Have a very happy February & keep in touch with us!

LOCAL NEWS Lake Maude project underway “This is a day that has been long awaited for,” said Travis Edwards, Parks and Recreation director for the city of Winter Haven, as commissioners, community members and leaders braved the chilly 30s winds for the Lake Maude groundbreaking in January. The 26-acre park will be the site of the Lake Maude Recreation Complex, a $4.4 million project with Pennoni Advisors and Straughn Trout. Construction starts in January with a finish line of August. The new complex will feature a championship football field with permanent bleachers. A large open grass area also will eventually form two additional football fields. The complex will offer “services the community will need,” he said. The future home of the Winter Haven Wolverines, several Wolverines board members and parents were on hand to witness the historic day.

Businesses fear renaming Avenue T Commissioners unanimously moved last month for the city to create a resolution renaming the city’s portion of the road from U.S. 17 to 11th St. NE as Martin Luther King Blvd. Tia Soto Navarro representing businesses along Avenue T, said they are not opposed to the commission changing the name of any street and naming it for Dr. King. “Just in our section,” she said, “it is industrial.” What compliance means is that each business will have to change its address to the new street name. Navarro said one example of the thousands (of dollars) the businesses will have to pay to change their address is that Central Towing will have to repaint their tow trucks. Additionally, she said, they will have to pay to re-register their GPS system. Businesses will have to change all of their advertising, letterhead, business cards, websites, social media postings, and other items. “It is little costs here and there, they add up pretty quickly,” she added.

Faith leader leaves legacy Known as an “in your face” individual, a faith leader in Lake Wales passed away, and those who worked with him now both mourn and remember what he taught them. According to Pastor Herb Schlenker, Way Side Baptist, “Jim had both the personality and the gift to bring pastors together like no other person that I have ever met. He always lifted other pastors above himself, and most of all, he possessed a wisdom that gave me many great insights into the pastoral ministry, and counseling. Jim did a lot for me; but I grew to love him for who he was. In the days prior to his illness he called me twice wanting to talk with me; but we couldn’t coordinate our schedules. Now I really regret that lost opportunity.”

Baptist Church in Winter Haven. In 1977, he created his first ministry, Kings Kids Counseling, serving foster children.

Way’s wife, Sherry, was his constant companion.

Play it Again Sports has first female franchise owner

Man ran fake charity to help veterans

The first female franchise owner of a Play It Again Sports store in the state of Florida smiled at her ribbon cutting Tuesday, Jan. 9, as Greater Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce members and city officials gathered with her to celebrate her achievement. “Playing with the boys has never scared me,” Mary Beth Jackson said, unafraid of the challenges that sometimes face women in business. Her son, Phillip Brooks, will be helping her manage the store. Having lived in Winter Haven a long time, she also was involved with the Junior League girls, and noted that her motto is to “be brave.” “Don’t let the fear of the unknown slow you down,” she said. “I was ready to retire, and all things fell into alignment,” she said. “Women are powerful,” said Amanda Jo Nicholson of the Winter Haven Chamber, as she listened to Mary Beth’s story.

On Jan. 4, Christopher Edwards was arrested on multiple second degree felony fraud charges for allegedly spending around $100,000 of donations drinking and eating at local bars and restaurants. Edwards sold raffle tickets online and in person at fundraising events for the purpose of purchasing solar panels that could have been used to help offset utility costs to veterans who are struggling financially. In March, Edwards, who is not a military veteran, said he is a retired investment banker who just wanted to “help” veterans. There is no evidence that any solar panels have been purchased or installed as a result of work done by Edwards. The apparent fraud scheme began in the Orlando area at American Legion Post 286. Edwards said that is where his idea was born. Second degree felony charges like these fraud charges carry up to 15 years in prison, 15 years probation and a $15,000 fine. Edwards was arrested on 11 felony charges.

Plan for Chain of Lakes unfolds

11-year-old hit, killed by train

Tim Hoeft, of Straughn Trout Architects, spoke with the city about various aspects of Phase 1. It adds room for athletic traffic off 17, while maintaining a nice entrance for the Theatre Winter Haven and adding an elevator for those who cannot make it up the steps to the theater. Phase 1 will include a circulation strategy, entries and drop off/pick up points, centralization of a general parking area, a presence on U.S. 17, connecting to future development, causeways and rain gardens, adjacent overflow parking and more. Phase 1 addresses the entry and lobby areas with support spaces (10,600 square feet), the Field House with indoor track and support spaces (74,000 square feet) and a twostory concourse with D-League spaces (15,300 square feet). The budget provides 545 paved parking spaces, 270 existing parking spaces on the north Complex side, adding 275 parking spaces in the proposed parking lot at the southwest of the Field House.

On her last day of Christmas break, home alone with her 9-year-old younger brother, 11-year-old Yazmin White ran up to the store to buy drinks and snacks while her brother was napping. On her way back home from the store Jan. 3, wearing ear buds and looking down at her phone, the sixth grader at Davenport School of the Arts crossed the railroad track between U.S. 17/92 and the Oakland neighborhood in Haines City when she was struck by an Amtrak train and killed at around 4:45 p.m. According to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, the child’s mother was at work around the time of the accident. Judd said the conductor of the train saw the child not paying attention near the tracks and blew the train horn for a quarter of a mile while braking from 68 miles per hour. No charges are pending as a result of the accident. Judd said the train was heading toward Winter Haven under the track speed limit of 70 mph.

The Mission founder passes at 76

Man of the community will be missed

The founder of The Mission, a non-profit at 180 Central Ave., Winter Haven, whose volunteers help the homeless and other struggling local residents, passed away after a short battle with pneumonia. Thomas Bradley Beauregard, known to many as Papa Tom, called Winter Haven his “Haven of Rest in the Lord.” In 1976, Tom felt the need to help others beyond the four walls of his home and into the community. He taught Sunday School at First Baptist Church and later at Calvary

Prominent Lakeland attorney John Shannon, his two daughters — Victoria Worthington and Olivia Shannon — and Victoria’s newlywed husband, Peter Worthington and family friend Krista Clayton were killed in a plane crash at Bartow Municipal Airport on Christmas Eve. 11

The five took off in dense fog and crashed soon after takeoff. According to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, they were set to fly to Key West for the day and return that night. The airplane got on the runway at about 6:30 a.m. and was ready for takeoff at about 7:15 a.m. Shannon was a Marine pilot back in the day who reportedly kept his twin engine Cessna 340 in impeccable condition. Shannon’s loss will also be felt throughout the county. He was a long time member of the Lakeland Kiwanis Club.

Celebrating birthday in style Pulling up to Cook Field, Curtis Marshawn “BallaBean” Bean Sr. was grilling on the barbecue, and his son, Curtis Marshawn “KidBalla” Bean Jr. was playing football a few spaces away in the parking lot. “Even at his birthday party, Marshawn is always playing football,” dad said from the grill, smiling. The father and son were getting ready for KidBalla’s eighth birthday party. Using $400 he saved washing cars in Orlando, the Haines City father recently paid to have somebody produce his son’s first music video. The day “Wanna be Somebody” was posted online, the video got more than 20,000 views and 600plus shares. Now it has more than 40,000 views. To celebrate, KidBalla gave his first concert Dec. 21. Inside the community center at Cook Field, 6-year-old Keyarria Thomas, a first grader at Lake Alfred Elementary, waited for the party to get started. She had never met the young Marshawn before. She saw his video online and liked it so much she just had to see his first ever concert.

Agape food bank closed at end of year About 140 Polk County food helping organizations lost a source of help when Agape Food Bank closed two days before Christmas. Agape, of Catholic Charities, stopped giving agencies food and turning over the services to Feeding Tampa Bay, which serves a 10-county region that includes Polk County. Agape has done this for 34 years in Polk County. Gary Tester, executive director of Catholic Charities in Polk, said funding has gotten too expensive for it. “We weren’t capable to move up to a senior level food bank, and as a result we had some fixed costs we can’t deal with,” he said, adding it is not giving up on providing food to people who need it. “When all the factors come in, it was a better market to serve as the Mission Market, a large food pantry, farmer’s market field as part of the operation,” he said. Two are planned in Polk as Catholic Charities is looking for land.

Love Stories Sue & Steve Smith My husband and I have been married for 33 wonderful years and this is our love story.

it through 30 days of backpacking we would be together forever. I guess they were correct.

In 1983 I left my home in Ottawa Canada, and boarded a plane for Germany, with a stop in New York to meet the rest of the team. This was where I said hello to my husband for the 1st time. We were both professional water skiers. Contracted to perform at a theme park in Germany for six months. He came from Boston, Massachusetts and after a very long flight and getting settled in our new homes it was time to start practicing for opening press day. Steve, my husband and I had been chosen to be doubles partners.

After our travels we returned home, and I moved to the Boston area to give our relationship a chance. A year later we were married during Hurricane Gloria. One of the few hurricanes to hit Massachusetts, we had no power and roads were closed, but that did not matter. We were determined to get married.

After hours and hours of practice we just did not work ever well together. We constantly fell and this was Germany in April, the water was really cold and so was the air. Even for a girl from Canada. I went to the show directors and asked to be removed from the act. They said no and explained that they believed we could work it out and we did. We had a wonderful performance on opening press day and both being so excited it led to our 1st kiss. Over the next 5 months we became best friends performing together and traveling around Germany and surrounding countries. Then our contracts ended, it was time to return home. Steve had already decided to take an extra month and backpack around Europe. At the last minute, he asked me to join him and I did not even think twice. So for 30 days we traveled by train, slept in youth hostels, and visited 11 countries. Traveling north to Ireland and Holland and then south through Italy and Greece. All of our ski friends said that if we made

havenmagazines.com

Several years later we moved to Florida and performed at Cypress Gardens. I skied at the gardens for about 7 years and Steve skied for about a year. He then got into real estate and after my skiing, I joined him as his assistant and we were delighted to be working to together again. We have one son who is married and we have two wonderful grandchildren. We are together every day, 24 hours a day and would not change a thing, we love being together. Recently, though, our love has grown to new depths. Six days before Christmas I had emergency surgery for a large mass in my abdomen. It turned out to be ovarian cancer. Steve has been my everything. When your husband has to do everything for you it really creates a bond that is unexplainable. So with 2018 here, we hold each other tighter than before and start chemo with the understanding that our love for each other and our love for God will get us through the months ahead. I am sure our relationship will grow even stronger and I am sure he will love me with or without hair this Valentine’s Day.

Life must be rich and full of loving--it’s no good otherwise, no good at all, for anyone. Jack Kerouac, Selected Letters, 1940-1956

Thank you to everyone who sent us their story! Please enjoy...

Michelle & James Rozar I was pregnant (due any day) and I had a 2-year old and a 4-year old in my basket at the grocery store when a woman stopped me to tell me that it will get easier. I must have looked rough because she had a look of pity on her face! She then said to me, God is going to send you a husband when he knows you are ready. I immediately cried. My children’s father was an abuser. Of me, and of drugs. She didn’t know that. I left that grocery store that day feeling hopeful that I was still worthy of true love. I had my daughter, my abuser left and I began healing. 3 months went by and a coworker, a man whom I trained at our job with (while I was 8 months pregnant), started a casual conversation, but I had no interest in anyone at that time. Considering my 2-year old, 4-year old and a newborn, where we both suffered complications during birth, I had zero interest. Anyways, he was leaving to go to the gym one day when I asked him to find out the monthly rate for me. I had never stepped foot in a gym but felt like it was time. He came back and offered a free pass as his guest and as hesitant as I was, I went. A conversation about our life quickly turned into

more and more conversation. We clicked and immediately became great friends. He gave me advice and I helped him with some things he was dealing with. Our friendship quickly turned into a crazy love. We moved in together within 6 months and have been happily married ever since. My husband has adopted my 3 children and this year their names are due to be changed to match the man who has raised them and loved them since they were toddlers and an infant. I know my story isn’t a glamorous one but I feel like it’s a story of hope. We were truly matched perfectly and I often think about the day at the grocery store when the woman spoke to me and made me realize I still deserve a real love. We have 5 children. He has 2 that I’ve helped raise since they were toddlers and our 3. Ages 9,10,10,11,13 and my goodness we are blessed. I might add that we applied for a marriage license and because he just couldn’t wait to marry me, we got married on a whim while I was at work one day. We didn’t have much family so planning a wedding was silly. We are coming up on our 10th Anniversary next year and want to have a vow renewal so that is something exciting for us! 19

Cameron and Torin Crittenden Torin and I met at Theatre Winter Haven during opening night of Almost, Maine. We talked about his upcoming role as Elvis in Million Dollar Quartet at TWH and found out that we both worked downtown - I, at Andy Thornal Company and he, at Carlton Music. Shortly before Christmas that year, he came into Andy Thornal’s to buy gifts (or so he said) and found me at the jewelry counter where I worked. He continued coming into the store during his lunchbreaks and would bring me coffee or chai tea from Richard’s and pretty soon, I was aware of his hot pursuit. New Year’s Eve, he asked to show me around downtown after I got off

work that day. I had just moved to Winter Haven the year before so I was pretty unfamiliar with the hotspots. He showed me the shops and restaurants and we found a plain white painted WH Rock and decided to sign our names on it. He took me to the top of the parking garage where we hid our rock and that day was the start of our love story. We started dating shortly after and in July of 2017, Torin proposed to me at the top of the parking garage under a picture perfect rainbow. We got married at Capernaum Lakeside Lodge in Lake Wales on December 9th, 2017 and we could not be happier to begin 2018 as newly weds!

Beth Koon Love the One You’re With (Especially With Yourself)! There is a major difference between being “alone” and being “by yourself.” I am a single, middleaged white-collar professional who has enjoyed (and sometimes merely endured) romantic relationships over the years. I’ve been engaged to marry three times, but never made it down the aisle. God intervened and saved me from my mistakes, just in time, every time! Does that make me a failure? I don’t think so… Currently, there are no romantic interests in my life. Does that define me? No! I lead a very purposeful, productive and happy life in my profession and in my community. What keeps me happy and satisfied? My work, great family and great friends! It’s my “attitude of gratitude” that helps me to love me. Yes, I am interested in dating and will celebrate the lucky man with whom havenmagazines.com

I will share my life. Many say that the key to a great romance is one’s own positive self-perception. If one doesn’t love oneself, then who else will? One’s own outlook on life starts with self as well. When looking in the mirror, what do you say to yourself? What are you grateful for at night and who is responsible for the things in which you are grateful? It’s crucial to keep a positive selfview. When the proverbial glass is half-empty, a single person will feel “alone.” When that glass is half-full, the single person will celebrate being “by myself.” When one has a reason to get out of bed in the morning, one tends to like him/herself better than the person with no direction in life. I know me better than anyone else, so I can please me better than anyone else. I look forward to the day when this is enhanced by a special gentleman and remain content in the meantime. 21

Jody & Scott Moreen I was one of those college hopefuls back in the Spring of 1973. At the encouragement of my parents I filled out several college applications and every afternoon I nervously went out to my mailbox to check to see if any college letters had arrived. The wait by the mailbox was agonizing for this northwest suburban gal. I was a decent student but would not have considered myself by any means an academic. I often think my high school educated parents were much more interested in me getting my “MRS” degree and finding a nice promising educated young man, than setting their sites on me finishing school with a distinguished degree. I did not do well on my college entrance exams so I was nearly convinced no private college would accept me. And then the long awaited letter came from Chicago, Illinois. I shook as I opened it slowly and I read with disbelief the first line, “Congratulations on your admission to North Park College!” I had to re-read it again to allow the reality to sink in. I was giddy with excitement and disbelief as I dreamed about my college days ahead and over stuffed my bags and suitcases in preparation. I arrived in the Windy City, oblivious to what awaited this 5 foot 2 inch suburban brown eyed girl about to embark on a whirlwind journey through academics, elevated trains, biting winter winds, deep dish pizza, Cubs baseball games and true love. Little did I know that the man of my dreams was also arriving at college from the western suburbs of Chicago. In the winter of our freshman semester a fellow classmate connected us, shouting our introductions over the noisy fans cheering at our college gymnasium at a Vikings basketball game. I don’t remember being head-overheels meeting him to begin with. He towered over me with his 6 foot 4 stance and gorgeous hazel green eyes, but all I could think of was my taller college girl friends repeating to me to “leave the tall guys alone for us” attitudes and their “handsoff” glares at me if I showed up with one. But my heart skipped a beat when Scott asked to walk me back to my college dormitory. I did not hesitate, but blushed a crimson red as I said “Yes.” We sat in the dormitory lounge for hours

and chatted with one another. As we were showing each other some family pictures and our driver’s license photos from our wallets, we were surprised to discover that we both were born the same week in January 1955. In my high school days I had dated some fellows but all my dates were younger than I, so was pleased to meet this “older” guy who barely made it by 4 days, but nonetheless he was older. We had a pleasant visit and I wondered if we would see one another again when he left my dormitory that night with no invitation for a future date. My heart sank. But the next day, by surprise, I caught on to his cleverly thought out plan to meet up again. Unknown to me he had “stolen” my college meal ticket card during our visit and it was mandatory to have a meal ticket to gain entrance into the cafeteria. He had left me a cute hand written note on our dorm message board that we gals glanced at whenever we entered or left the dorm. His small note simply read “Are you missing your meal ticket?? Meet me by the entrance to the cafeteria at 8AM- I think I may have found it.” ( with a smiley face symbol and signed, Scott ) This began our four year courtship that morning over bacon, eggs, toast and Folger’s coffee. To my parent’s surprise we both finished our 4 years and earned our Bachelor’s degrees. I was the first in my family to get a college diploma. And YES, I also earned my “MRS” degree in August which thrilled both my parents. We got engaged over a slice of Uno’s deep dish pizza, a John Denver concert and an “el” ride through the loop. I am happy to say that my taller girlfriends forgave me for marrying a tall guy and they fell in love and married the men of their dreams, and yes, they were shorter guys, nonetheless. We just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary this past August and we not only rejoiced over our many happy memories through the years, but that our 3 sons all chose to attend and graduate from our alma mater, North Park University, in the Windy City. And one of them also met the girl of his dreams there, his future wife, over Chicago deep dish pizza.

Kim & Mike Pickett

The Meeting ---

The Proposal---

My husband, Mike and I met fairly young. We both lived in small towns twenty miles apart. I was fifteen, had a couple “boyfriends,” but wasn’t allowed to date until I neared sixteen. In February, three months before I turned sixteen, my cousin gave me a call. We were close friends, and she had been dating a guy that lived out of town. Neither one of them drove, and they had met through a basketball game between churches. Her boyfriend just happened to have a friend who drove. They concocted a plan that they would set this friend up with someone my cousin knew in her town. I was actually the one she thought of second. I had just had a bad breakup, (the way a fifteen year old sees it!) and wasn’t too keen on the idea of meeting anyone. Meanwhile, this friend of his, “Mike” was also hesitating as he hadn’t really dated, and didn’t have the confidence to do so. He was in his senior year, and stayed busy enough as it was. But, my cousin’s boyfriend persisted. It was his only chance at a ride to see his girlfriend, as this friend, “Mike” had wheels! Saturday came around, and finding himself bored, Mike made the call, and the two jumped in the car and headed out of town. I also found myself bored on that Saturday. And, although nervous, decided to jump on my bicycle and make the three mile ride into town to meet this guy. Well, Mike was shy, but we hit it off, and by the end of the night I just knew this was the one! And, I was right. Two and a half years later, when I was just eighteen, and he was twenty we were married. That wedding day happened nearly thirty-nine years ago. We went through many hardships, job layoffs, a plant closure, medical issues. Then, a move 1,100 miles to a paradise called Florida. And, here we are. The icing on the cake is our four wonderful adult children, Christopher, April, Bethany and Alyssa. And, our four beautiful grandchildren, Taylor, Jameson, Dexter, and Owen. Life just doesn’t get any better. We were meant to be together, and we are so blessed. God is good.

After nearly two years of dating, Mike and I started dreaming of a future together. We talked about a family to come, and already had a name picked out for our first child. If it were to be a boy, he would be little Christopher Michael. I spent hours pouring over Bride magazines and dreaming of the things to come! We looked at engagement rings, and I picked out what I liked. I believe Mike had laid it away, and made payments. At the time of our proposal, we lived in Ohio. It was 1978. Christmas was coming, and I hoped that he would pick the holidays to propose, Christmas Eve, ideally. After a busy Christmas season, we planned to spend some time at my house Christmas Eve, and then head back to his place for the larger part of the evening. I was so hoping he would ask me to marry him that night! We had been out shopping all day, eagerly picking out gifts for our loved ones on our meager incomes. The snow outside was getting heavier the later into the evening it crept. We visited with my family, and I wondered when, or ‘if’ we would be heading out due to the weather. The news was reporting bad roads, and I feared that my dream of a Christmas eve proposal was dwindling. Money was tight, but had he managed to get the ring out of layaway in time, it would be back at his house, I assumed, and we needed to get there to see my wish fulfilled! I was almost in tears when we decided that there was no way we could head back, just too dangerous. To my surprise, Mike pulled a black velvet box out of his pocket. He got down on his knee there in my living room. And, he placed that beautiful, yet dainty diamond ring on my finger. A fairy tale come true that was matched only by the wedding held the following July. That was over thirty-nine years ago, and although I thought I could not love him more than on that night, time has proved me wrong. He is my soulmate, my best friend, and the love of my life. Mike, I am thankful everyday that you are mine. I love you so much.

Blair Updike Painting Florida’s History

Local artist Blair Updike has a love for Lake Wales, the place she calls home. The Florida culture from cowboys and Seminoles to modern day authors inspires her to illuminate the captivating history of the region with every stroke of her brush. Blair, an 8th generation Floridian, grew up in Lake Wales, attending All Saints Academy. Creativity a natural resource from within Blair, she was always drawing and painting, remembering her first painting, she said, “I do remember doing my first painting. I think I did a summer art camp probably with Connie Christoph who taught at Hillcrest here and I painted a horse in acrylic or something.” Blair recounted with a chuckle, “I was always drawing or painting from early on, I’d do these whole scenes where it was like the landscape with all different kind of trees, a waterfall, and squirrels, and otters. Everywhere there could be an animal in the earth or sky, it was in there.” Attending Stetson University, Blair first chose Art as her major, eventually switching to English. “I kind of put down the painting for years,” she explained, saying that she worked for her family’s company Peterson Industries in Lake Wales. “When my youngest child was two, I had a picture of her that I thought was really cute and I wanted to make a painting of it,” remarked Blair,

crediting that for reacquainting her with painting.

of how it happens. I can’t just do landscapes, I have to like nerd out on something.”

Blair now homeschools her two girls and works as the Clerk for Highland Park where she lives and has a studio. Though she can paint with watercolor and sculpt, she primarily works with oil paints.

Pointing to a painting on the wall of Mike Osceola, Blair said that he is sort of a muse of hers and has sat for her a number of times. He is the descendant of the war Chief Osceola, Blair explained, who led a Seminole resistance in the Second Seminole War. “He looks a lot like the original Osceola and plus the Seminoles are such flashy dressers which is awesome.”

Her stunning paintings hang on the walls of her studio with beautiful handpicked frames, some antique, some custom from a local Lake Wales framer, and some wholesale, with pieces she’s working on in line to be completed. In the living room of her studio space, beside her easel lays a palette caked with layers of paint from paintings passed, looking like a piece of art itself. It was a testament to the hours of work she puts into this gift that seems to come naturally to the artist.

Her work isn’t caged in by one genre. Blair does many portraits, some commissioned and some that catch her eye, landscapes, sunsets, still life’s–a little bit of everything. She doesn’t have a favorite painting either, “You kind of love it while you’re working on it and once it’s done, it’s over with and you’ve moved on,” she reflected.

With an array of subjects donning her work, I asked about what she chooses to paint. “I mostly do Florida cultural and landscape themes just because I feel like it’s beautiful and the cultural aspect is something that needs a little more attention. We, I kind of think, don’t know who we are anymore and I’d rather reflect something that’s a little authentic about Florida, than just to do the pretty scenes. It’s good to get some of the Florida cowboys in there sometimes and Seminoles and I’ve done some paintings of authors.” She laughingly commented, “I force people to learn along with me is kind

Constantly evolving, Blair is currently working on painting from memory. In Italy last Spring, Blair met a group from Boston that she stays in touch with, saying, “I sent four panels up for an event they had last week. Something went wrong with the first two panels so the second two I just completely made up from my head and just painted them with no reference or anything. It kind of set me free to be able to just make stuff up.” On her walks every afternoon or

26

evening, Blair tries to remember what she saw from a scene and will come back to the studio and paint it from memory, “It’s the difference between observing something and finding it, I guess, in your own head. Really, it’s not necessarily so much about paintings or creating so much as it is about learning. I guess, I’m directed by what I’m interested in learning now.” With multifaceted subjects and genres of her work, I asked Blair what artists she admires or finds inspiring. She noted Quang Ho, David Leffel, and Sherrie McGraw as modern artists that she appreciates and named Spanish Impressionist painter, Sorolla as an incredible inspiration. Outside of painting, Blair likes to cook and garden, but says painting has been more of her focus lately. “I read a lot, probably too much,” she chuckled about her love of books. She loves novels and poetry, naming Henry Miller as a favorite author. Blair says the community is a huge supporter of her work, keeping her busy with commissions and buying her work so fast that she can’t keep enough in her studio. You can follow Blair’s work, buy some of her paintings, or commission her when she has the time, by following her Facebook page, Blair Updike Art, @bupdikeart.

Stage Reading of The Old Settler at Theatre Winter Haven Theatre Winter Haven will be putting on a stage reading of The Old Settler by John Henry Redwood, directed by Tony Murvin on February 28th. You may recognize director Tony Murvin’s name from directing his first production with Theatre Winter Haven last year in the stage reading of Fences. Tony, who was born and raised in Winter Haven, began doing theatre at Theatre Winter Haven when he was only 16. “I was always involved with theatre, but that’s kind of where my passion was born, is at Theatre Winter Haven,” he explained.

fact that it has two strong female characters in it. As a director and as an artist, in general, I’m drawn to things that have very strong female characters in them especially when it has very strong female African American characters.”

Back for his second stage read, Tony is bringing his passion to The Old Settler on the Theatre Winter Haven stage. Tony recalls seeing this production several years ago, saying, “There was one night where I was on tour myself and I couldn’t sleep. I got up and was watching PBS and there was a production of it on PBS starring Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen who are two of my favorite actresses.”

“The older sister Bess [short for Elizabeth] allows her sister Quilly to come live with her and she also takes in a young man as a border to also help with the cost of the rent for the apartment,” relayed Tony. Elizabeth is fifty-five, her sister Quilly, fifty-three, and the gentleman named Husband is in his 20’s. Though Elizabeth is twice his age, “They [Husband and Elizabeth] develop a relationship with each other.”

“It was brilliant, I absolutely loved it,” he expressed, continuing, “I always knew that it was something that I wanted to direct because of the

When asked what characteristic and attributes he was looking for in his cast of 3 women and 1 man, Tony responded, “All of these characters, especially the three female characters, I pretty much fell in love with them. So, as far as what I’m looking for, I don’t know. I’ll know it when I see it when I have that actor in the room with me and they’re doing their monologue or they’re reading sides from the play itself and just how they take direction.”

The story of The Old Settler revolves around early 1940’s Harlem, New York. “It’s a story about two sisters with some animosity and distance between them because of something that has happened in their life,” he remarked.

Finishing his thought, Tony said, “I can only speak for myself as a director, there’s something for me that clicks with that performer, and I’ll have that moment where I can say to myself, okay this person is my Quilly.” The set will be minimal, music stands for the actors to have their lines on, chairs, and “maybe one or two things to symbolize the fact that the story takes place in an apartment, but that’s basically it,” said the director, continuing, “The actors themselves will wear costumes similar to what people would have worn during that time.”

Tony observed, “It’s a story about relationships and families.”

29

With the importance placed on a strong delivery from the actors as opposed to a large intricate set, Tony said, “Most of it is a lot of rehearsal from the actors because even though they don’t have the lines memorized, they do have to be very comfortable with it especially with some of the blocking that I am doing.” What can the audience expect to come away with from this stage read of The Old Settler? “I hope they take away from this that things aren’t always what they seem. We have a tendency especially in relationships with family members,” he paused, “we tend to see things in very different ways,” the director said thoughtfully. Using this stage read as an example, he concluded his thought, “It’s not until you actually talk that you realize that you need to look at this through the other person’s eyes.” To find out more information on the production of The Old Settler or purchase tickets, visit Theatre Winter Haven’s website, http://www. theatrewinterhaven.com or give them a call at (863) 294-7469.

4th Annual CommunityFest and Taste of Winter Haven

The Winter Haven Chamber is bringing the business and civic communities together to put on two fantastic events on the same day for the Chain of Lakes city. The community will be out in force to enjoy a day of family, food and fun on March 3rd for the 4th annual Community Fest Winter Haven and Taste of Winter Haven. In support of their community, Citizens Bank & Trust is the headline sponsor for the events and has been for the last four years. Community Fest will be a day of free family fun from 11 to 4, rain or shine, in Central Park and Virginia Miller Park. “Our aim is to pack the park with activities and fun things for families to do,” said Winter Haven Chamber President, Katie Worthington. Some of the activities to be enjoyed include Heartland Church bringing two bounce houses, there will also be an obstacle course, inflatable games, jugglers, stilt walkers, magicians, a balloon artist, face painting, washer toss, bean bag toss, giant Connect 4, giant Jenga and more. With so many free, fun things to do for the family

and the chamber’s partnership with principals at Winter Haven schools to promote the event by getting flyers out to around 8,000 kids, this popular event draws in between 6,000 to 8,000 attendees each year.

The chamber closes the roads around the chamber building and holds it on the chamber property from 6 to 9. You must be 21 or older to attend the Taste of Winter Haven and of course, drink responsibly. Tickets are $35 for all you can eat or drink and the event is capped at 500 people, selling out each year, so get your tickets now!

There will be craft vendors and small businesses set up in booths as well, selling products or sponsoring activities. Katie spoke about the goal the chamber has for the event, remarking, “The primary focus is activities and the opportunity for the community, both the business community, civic groups and churches to have a fun family-focused day in the park.”

Katie described the event saying, “We invite restaurants, craft beer, and wine to come and set up booths.” The companies with booths are essentially sponsors of the event according to the chamber president. They don’t pay to be a part of the event but provide all of the samples for the attendees.

“I think it’s just great to have a festivalstyle day that everyone can come out and enjoy. It’s open to everyone in Winter Haven and beyond in Polk County,” said Katie, adding, “It really is focused on getting everybody out, enjoying a great day in Winter Haven and really focusing on bringing the community together.”

Budweiser, Bernie Little Distributors, and Grove Roots Brewing Company have signed on to provide beer for the evening and the roster of restaurants will have your mouth watering too. So far, local favorites Gourmet Goodies, Ovation Bistro & Bar, Tam’s Classic Catering, Tallulah’s Table by the Sea,

Richard’s Fine Coffee, San Diego’s Mexican Grill and Tempo 1930 have signed up to provide a “taste” of Winter Haven. The chamber advised that they are looking for more vendors to participate if interested. If you would like to volunteer, be a general sponsor or set up a booth at community fest, contact the chamber through their website. The fee to set up a booth is only $25. Also, be sure to contact the chamber if you are interested in volunteering to assist in setting up and cleaning up after Taste of Winter Haven or to serve the craft beer and wine. Restaurants and caterers can sign up to sponsor Taste of Winter Haven by providing a “taste” for the event. There is no cost to the restaurant to participate, but they are responsible for providing the “taste.” Additional sponsorships and logoed item sponsorships are also available. www.winterhavenchamber.com Phone Number: 863-293-2138

The Country Club of Winter Haven Executive Chef Ross Ruffino along with his team are bringing a taste of fine dining to The Winter Haven Country Club. Chef Ross is originally from Chicago moving to Florida about 8 years ago to take a job as the chef for a restaurant group in Gainesville. Cooking is in Chef Ross’s lineage he explained. “My dad was an executive chef for 40 years, my uncle was an instructor at the Culinary Institute of America, and my mom was a corporate F & B (food and beverage) trainer for Marriott. So the joke is, I was born on a hot plate, I grew up in a hospitality family with hospitality siblings”

members for 20, 30, 40 years so it’s got a very down-home atmosphere. It’s a great place for them to come out and socialize with people they grew up at the club with.” Chef Ross invited Haven out to get a taste of what they have to offer. The restaurant is located on the second floor of a building standing amongst the oaks, pines, palms, and green golf courses of the club. The renovations done due to the damage caused by Irma were phenomenal. Though I’m not sure what the space looked like prior, the design of its current state left a want for nothing. A sleek, upscale design with copper and carbon accents, dark wood tables, and dark leather chairs, it exudes luxury.

Chef Ross comes from a fine dining background, previously working at Sea Island in Georgia and as chef de cuisine at the Casa Monica in St. Augustine. He is taking his fine dining background and creating a special culinary experience for the members of The Country Club of Winter Haven.

Chef Ross prepared several dishes for us to try. First up was The Whole Tom–a mouthwatering sandwich comprised of turkey, arugula, caramelized apples, lingonberry aioli on a telera roll. The chef shared his excitement for this particular menu item saying, “It’s like Thanksgiving on a bun, it’s crazy good. I’ve taken that sandwich with me wherever I’ve gone. It’s just one of those things that so near and dear to me and close to home, I have to have it with me wherever I go. It’s kind of one of my guilty pleasures.” He continued, “It reminds me of home. My dad was a chef and both sides of my grandparents were immigrants and so food was very important to us as a family and it’s one of those things that just kind of reminds me of my childhood.”

Giving some background on the history of the country club, Chef Ross explained that there has always been a restaurant, “In one form or fashion,” at the club. At The Country Club of Winter Haven, previously Lake Region Yacht and Country Club, the restaurant was originally located in a building across from where it is currently. They moved it to the current building 4 to 5 years ago according to the chef, “To clear space for what’s coming in the future–a new clubhouse.” “We suffered some pretty catastrophic damage from Hurricane Irma so they actually just completely renovated the dining area,” he said. “It’s got a really nice, new feel to it. I think the future here is pretty amazing. We have an opportunity to do something special with the food and the service. I originally came down this way as an opportunity to provide what I thought could be the best dining establishment between Tampa and Orlando and I think we’re working towards that.”

I don’t know why this sandwich isn’t made at every restaurant in the country, it is seriously that good. As if it couldn’t get any better, there were two more stand–out dishes to try–filet mignon with bourbon and bacon Brussel sprouts and a green peppercorn sauce on the top and pork osso buco, brown butter pumpkin ravioli, and rosemary demi with Brussel sprouts.

The restaurant was previously called The Crow’s Nest, but with the current rebrand going on, they have yet to settle on a new moniker for the eatery.

Where to start? The presentation alone was worth an award. The filet was plated beautifully with floral garnishes on top. The chef described how he cooks the sauce that accompanied the Brussel sprouts, “Basically I just bring in really, really,

The restaurant is exclusive to club members, the chef remarking, “A lot of our membership have been

good maple syrup and then we just cook it down with Jim Beam and it just turns out perfect. The Brussel sprouts are cooked in the Jim Beam maple syrup and a little bit of Nueske’s bacon which is a nice smoked bacon, and it’s just primo.” The flavors just worked together, the sweet sauce, the fresh sprouts, and smoky bacon–simply amazing. The filet itself could have been cut with a butter knife, cooked to pink perfection, devoid of the need for salt and pepper. You haven’t lived until you’ve eaten Executive Chef Ross Ruffino’s filet mignon. The peppercorn sauce also can’t be understated. Whole peppercorns on top added a nice spice to it all. What makes the steaks so good at The Country Club of Winter Haven? “We dry age all of our own meats. We do a Delmonico, a ribeye, New York strip, and a filet mignon that we do 28-day in-house ages on,” the chef explained. The pork osso buco was just as tender and flavorful, but the brown butter pumpkin ravioli were my favorite part of that dish. The brown butter and pumpkin tasted almost like their own dessert but paired with the ravioli and a bite of osso buco it was a meal like none I’ve ever had. Chef Ross won’t take all the credit for these works of culinary art, however. He credits Brandy Booth, the club’s F & B Manager, who has been doing a fantastic job running the front of the house there for 16 years, as well as his sous chef, Mateo Huerta who has followed him around the state for the last five years, and the pastry chef Rachel Bibby who according to Chef Ross, makes all her own bread for dinner service and a different dessert every night. “I’m very fortunate to have the people around me that I do because I’m only as good as they are,” said the chef. Due to the out-of-this-world quality of food, the chef recommends that members make reservations for Valentine’s Day quickly. If you are not a member, guests are welcome with members, and if you are interested in becoming a member, all information can be found on the club’s website, www.ccofwinterhaven.com. THIS IS HOW WE ROLL We just landed back in Winter Haven. Nando and I flew from Florida to NY and drove another one of our vintage Airstreams down here to the farm. We froze most of the way down, surrounded by a bunch of snowbirds in their RV’s doing the same southbound scramble. Nando was white knuckling it most of the way. The conditions were pretty darn bad a lot of the time. Our trailers were like a bunch of sleds on ice. Whew, it was grueling. As our 31 foot, 1974, Silver Bullet started to shed its layers of snow and ice we were losing our fur coats and Carharts too. I’d say probably by South Carolina you could actually read the writing on the trailer. Looking through a thin white film of road salt and dust you could just make out enough to see our logo and read, “Follow Us on Instagram.” This particular Airstream is a “Mobile Pop Up Shop”. It’s our super custom boutique on wheels made by us for us. In the 90’s, Nando bought the Airstream on a whim after seeing it parked in a lot off of Highway 27. He lived in it while modeling and acting out in LA for a summer and camped in it often. It had been sitting unused for about 10 years. One day, in 2012, I looked at it and a light went on in my head. I said, “Nando, we can renovate that thing and turn it into a store and start selling artisan goods from Colombia.” He laughed at me first thinking it was a crazy idea but, my husband usually ends up going with my gut on stuff like this. We had been tossing around the idea of a brick and mortar but, couldn’t decide on a location. A couple of weeks later, we found ourselves pulling up the dated flooring and sitting in the trailer drawing a layout and deciding where the cash wrap (point of sale) would be. When we decided to move the Airstream from where it was parked for almost a decade, it woke up just like a hibernating bear. That is the indestructible reputation Airstream has built. We pulled it to a good working space on level ground and gutted it almost completely. Nando re-plumbed and rewired what was needed throughout the trailer. We cleaned ceiling to floor and slapped on a fresh coat of white paint. We even painted the bathroom sink and some old fixtures. Once we had committed, we were surprised at how quickly we could actually execute this transformation and what a difference a little havenmagazines.com

TLC would make. Keep in mind, we do have background and experience with doing this type of work so it was not our first rodeo. We sourced some lightweight bamboo flooring and installed it with pliable vinyl baseboards. We were grateful to have some help from my parents too. Dad designed custom stainless steel countertops and helped execute the build out. My mom cleaned a lot of the original light fixtures and details. She is magic with making old look new. Next stop… Ikea! Ikea and tiny space outfitting is a match made in heaven. We found metal shelves meant for the garage that we were able to retrofit into clothing and accessory racks. Also, full-length mirrors that Nando bolted on to the walls, along with an awesome fold out couch! Final touches of cowhides, carpet runners, vintage leather horse harnesses and cow horns iced the cake. I’m a big lighting freak so we lit that baby up with tons of lights, mostly LED, to conserve the battery. I set to work on Mod Podging maps onto Styrofoam mannequin heads as a nod to our travel theme. We also made custom curtains. Nando did a bunch of exterior body and window repair work. He greased the bearings and put in new trailer brakes with new tires. Safety is just as important as appearance. Then the mobile pop up shop was wrapped with decals inside and out sporting our name and branding. Catch us popped up to see more details. The bags and accessories are sourced from Colombia, South America. Nando’s father is from there. We travel to small villages and buy the goods directly from the local artisans that make them. In the shop, there is video running of us traveling through Colombia and footage of the actual artisans making the goods. What we have figured out is we let the customers tell us what they want, by what they buy. As a result, we have gotten somewhat away from bags and are geared more towards apparel and travel accessories. The business over the past 6 yrs has morphed, in a good way! It has become a Lifestyle Brand. Unlike our product mix, the one thing that hasn’t had to be edited is the trusty old Airstream. We have taken it all around the USA. The craziest setup was driving through the streets of NYC. Nando can drive the trailer anywhere considering 40

the fact that he grew up pulling a horse trailer with thoroughbreds in it! The difference about this trailer is that nothing is alive in it other than sometimes a little lizard will tag along off the farm! We love popping up in Lakeland and at different markets in Central Florida. The Airstream is quite an experience and conversation piece that our customers enjoy...just as much as we do. We were recognized and featured in Country Living Magazine, which was a real honor and payoff from all the hard work. If you can dream it up, establish a budget and make a sound plan, you can do it! My dad always says, “The hardest part is getting started”. We were one of the original Airstream mobile boutiques in the USA. #thisishowweroll www.winnerhaven.com l www. delcastillobagcompany.com Email: winnerhaven@gmail.com Insta/FB: winnerhaven l delcastillobagcompany We are Nando & Sally Del Castillo. Between the two of us we have 35 years racked up in just the fashion industry alone. Through his modeling career Nando has worked with the highest designers in Paris, Milan and New York. I went to Kent State University for Fashion Design and Merchandising. We’ve worked in front of and behind the camera. When it comes to Style, Fashion, Set Dressing & Function we get it and know how it works. We are also huge advocates of travel, experience and statement graphic T’s. They represent where you are from, where you’ve been and where you are going. In addition to apparel we decorate and design boutique hotels, mansions and tiny houses. We’re based out of Winter Haven, (where Nando grew up), and Upstate NY, which is where we do the majority of our film work. Winter Haven has a magnetic pull so NY sees us less and less. We are here to share with Y’all some of what we think are stylish insider design ideas and fun side stories/adventures that happen along the way. Thanks for following along! Xo Sally & Nando DC

Davidson of Dundee Davidson of Dundee–a time capsule for both the factory’s authentic 1960’s style and the delectable taste of sweet Florida treats. Known for their selection of citrus candy, chocolates, jellies, and marmalades, Davidson’s celebrated their 50th anniversary just last year, having opened their doors in 1967. I spoke with the owner of Davidson’s of Dundee, Tom Davidson to learn the story of how the candy factory came to be. Tom spoke about his grandparents, relaying,“They lived on a road in Winter Haven where they had lots of orange groves behind them so they would use those oranges and make some good stuff that way.” “It was like a special treat because it was right after the Great Depression so times were pretty tough,” he said about the citrus candies his grandparents would make. Tom’s father Glen who got to enjoy these citrus confections, grew up in Winter Haven, attending Winter Haven High School. After school, he flew dive bombers in the Navy during World War II. Following the Navy, Glen worked for Sunline Candy Company in St. Louis where the candy Pixy Stix originated from. Tom told a story about when his father worked for Sunline, looking to develop new products. His father attended Rotary Club with a friend that worked for Tums, the antacid and heartburn medicine company. They began talking about making Pixy Stix in a tablet like Tums medicine. Tums allowed them to use their machines to attempt this. This is where the candy SweeTARTS was born. Tom’s father left Sunline and came to Dundee where he built the candy factory in 1967, giving visitors a taste of Florida ever since. “We’ve got 134 marmalade and jelly flavors and about 128 of the

havenmagazines.com

citrus candies and chocolate items,” relayed Tom. When you visit Davidson’s you can take guided tours of their factory where you can see their marmalades and jellies filling jars and coming down the converter belt to be labeled or take a peek at the candy side. I took the tour with guide Val Hartman where I learned how their famous candies are made–the old-fashioned way. “We still cook things the same way as we did back in the day, in 1967, in the copper kettles and stirred with wooden paddles,” Val said. The jelly candy is cooked until it reaches a temperature of 225 degrees. Paper is then put down on marble tables with a frame laid on top. Once the candy reaches the desired temperature, they pour it into the frame to set and cool. Val explained the purpose behind using marble tables and copper kettles–the kettles cook the candy evenly and the marble allows it to cool quicker. Once cooled and set, the candy is cut into three sections and put on a rack where is sets for another two days to gel completely. When cutting the candies, they put sugar on the table to keep it from sticking and more sugar on top. After it is cut into squares, it is sugared again, the excess is sifted off, and it is ready to be weighed, sealed in packaging for freshness, and topped with Davidson’s signature orange bow. How much sugar does the factory go through in a week? Val pointed to a 400-pound barrel of sugar in the factory and explained that they go through two of them every week in the candy factory. With each kettle making around 40 pounds of candy, Davidson’s makes between 1,000 and 3,000 pounds of candy per day, all by hand. Whether you choose orange, tangerine, key lime,

42

or any of Davidson’s other flavors, rest assured that it contains the natural juice from that fruit, all from Florida. According to Val, “That’s what makes it taste so good!” What keeps Davidson’s business going strong? Aside from their old-fashioned, Florida fruit juice flavored candies, Tom credits his many wonderful long-term employees. “We had a lady that worked at the counter for us and she started in 1967 and she just retired about three years or so ago,” he said. Because she had been with the company since it’s start, it wasn’t unusual for guests to recognize her from previous visits and ask to take pictures. Tom continued, “We had one fellow that came in with his family, took the photo, and then pulled out of his wallet, a picture of when he was a 12-year-old boy with Alice, taking a picture.” The quality of their products also draws crowds. Tom remembers his father saying, “What we’ve got to do is make it so special and make it taste so good that people will want another one.” Tom added, “So, that’s what we’re trying to do the whole way through.” Whether your sweetheart likes, chocolate, citrus candies, pecan logs, or peanut brittle, you’ll find a sweet symbol of your love at Davidson’s. For Valentine’s Day, they have a candy they call “Strawberry Delicacy”, a citrus candy that is dipped in white chocolate as well as milk chocolate. I had a chance to sample one…or two… or four of the Strawberry Delicacy dipped in white chocolate and they were addicting, I was in love! DaVita Medical Group Feeling a bit under the weather and need a quick appointment or looking for a new healthcare provider? DaVita Medal Group on Cypress Gardens can help you with that. They have a doctor with rave reviews from both patients and staff. Dr. Armando A. Doval is originally from Puerto Rico and has been with DaVita Medical Group since last August. Though he’s new to the practice, practicing medicine isn’t new to him. You might say that caring for patients runs in his blood with a father who was a physician and a mother who was a nurse. According to the good doctor, he went to medical school in Mexico, finishing the last year in his native Puerto Rico and doing his residency in Puerto Rico as well. Throughout his schooling, he attended Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico. He has experience from the Hospital de la Concepcion San German, Puerto Rico and has a certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine. He graduated in 2008 and has since been in the teaching field, teaching Internal Medicine for the last 10 years while also having a private practice. I spoke with Dr. Doval’s Nurse Administrator, Diane Grabowski, who handles the administrative side of the office. Diane also does case management and even sees patients as need with her 30 years of experience as an RN. She couldn’t speak highly enough of the doctor, expressing thoughtfully, “He has an excellent bedside manner,

havenmagazines.com

you don’t see the type of physician that he is in all doctors. He takes his time with his patients and definitely remembers everything, he’s just very thorough during his visits.” Speaking on working beside Dr. Doval, she added, “He is excellent to work with. The comradery, he trusts my opinions, I trust his opinions, and we work very well together.” Diane gave an overview of their practice stating, “DaVita is primary care physician offices, the DaVita Medical Group, so we are under the umbrella of DaVita. Most people know DaVita as the kidney care, where you can go for dialysis. Several years ago, DaVita started branching out and starting acquiring physician practices.” According to Diane, DaVita acquired JSA Healthcare about 4 years ago. Speaking about their office on Cypress Gardens Boulevard, Diane explained, “We are able, as an office, to provide complete care. We refer out when needed, but our providers try to do as much care for the patient-centered care as possible.” She elaborated that they also provide case management, following their patients in the hospital and making sure referrals get to the correct specialists for their patients. “In office, we offer such things such as EKG’s, we can do nebulizer breathing treatments, IV antibiotics, steroids, fluids, and immunizations. We offer a variety of services that we can treat here in the office so patients don’t have to go to the hospital,” she continued. Diane expressed that patients choose DaVita not

44

only because of the vast services they provide but also because, “We definitely care about patients as if they are our family.” As to what he’s experienced since he’s been with DaVita, Dr. Doval responded, “We’ve been very busy lately, so the community is growing. My experience, since we had a hurricane recently, we’ve had so many people from Puerto Rico coming in here lately, even from other clinics. So, it’s been growing really fast.” Diane added to the doctor’s statement saying, “I’ve been with JSA, now DaVita, for over 4 years and when I started there were about 56 offices,” she continued, “now we’re over 80 in Florida so we’re definitely seeing a lot of growth in the Florida market.” Diane spoke to what the future holds for their clinic with Dr. Doval at the helm, remarking, “Continued growth, and continuing to support the patients in our community. I think, with Dr. Doval here, we offer a lot to the people here in the community especially to our Hispanic patients that need a Spanish-speaking doctor.” DaVita Medical Group - Cypress Gardens 6800 Cypress Gardens Boulevard Winter Haven, FL 33884 Phone: (863) 268-7380 Hours: Mon. - Fri. 8am - 5pm

Adams Estate On the water’s edge of Lake Alfred among the grand oaks and neat rows of orange trees, sits the picturesque Adams Estate. A wedding venue seemingly clipped from the pages of a storybook.

The main house’s second level boasting 5 bedrooms and 4 full bathrooms are reserved for the bridal party. Debbie said, “The day of your wedding you can come out and bring your masseuse, bring your hair, makeup, pedicure, manicure, and we can provide champagne or light hors-d’oeuvres. You have all of this space for your bridesmaids and your bridal party to get ready for the ceremony.”

The estate is owned by brothers Bud, John and Max Strang and their sister, Eve Bass. Built by their grandmother in 1942, the estate eventually became the offices of the family grove business after her passing.

The estate also has approved caterers to serve your wedding. “We have 4 caterers that we have vetted and that we have worked with and that familiar with the property, familiar with our standards, familiar with our procedures so they are the only vendors that can provide food here on the estate,” said the general manager, continuing, “We carefully hand selected them so they can do anything from a barbecue to filet mignon. They can do a fish fry if you want a fish fry. I have one bride that wants a pizza buffet.”

Six years ago, Eve’s daughter got married at the estate where guests raved about it. They were expressing what a great professional wedding venue it would make. The family decided to branch out into the wedding venue business and open Adams Estate. They are developing 24 for the purpose of accommodating their guests. The entire property is undergoing a large-scale renovation project. When I visited the estate there were surveyors, landscapers, painters, carpenters and cleaners passing in and out of the house all contributing to what is sure to be a stunning transformation to the already incredible property.

According to Tennick, these four specific caterers were chosen because of their ability to accommodate any wedding party’s price point and menu preferences. Included in the rental of the estate are tables and chairs for up to 300 guests. They can also assist in helping you with the details large and small from photographers, florists, and linens for your big day with Eve remarking, “Anything that you need, we can provide for you or we have a list of people we can suggest.”

Renovations and the estate’s historical elegance aside, Adams Estate General Manager Debbie Tennick says, “The location is just the absolute icing on the wedding cake.” Centrally located in Lake Alfred there is quick access to I-4 heading to Tampa or Orlando and downtown Winter Haven. Their location makes it perfect for destination weddings with everything Central Florida has to offer–Disney, beaches, shopping, and dining.

“The goal is just to make it as easy as possible for people coming. If they want someone to help walk them through all of it we’re there. If they’ve got it and just want to show up, that’s fine too,” said Eve.

The main house has a capacity of 300 people both inside and outside. Out the double French doors leading to the back of the property is a breathtaking newly built terrace overlooking the lake. A stunning space for an outdoor wedding, guests have the option to put a tent directly on the terrace or to the side, leaving the terrace open to the gorgeous Florida skies.

Leaving no detail unanswered for, the general manager commented, “We do offer a dayof attendant that will kind of guide you through, let you in, make sure that you everything you need up here [in the bridal suite] and through your ceremony.” Adams Estate eventually plans to have an in-house wedding planner and bridal coordinator. How far in advance should you book? According to Debbie, the venue is heavily booked in 2019 and still has availabilities this year. She has a recommendation for brides to be, “As soon as you know that you’re going to get married, start looking online, start pulling together some resources, putting in some search criteria that you want for how many miles away, what specific things you have in mind–waterfront, beachfront, garden ceremony, and then start touring and lock down your venue first.”

“We’ll also have a wedding ceremony garden that is going to be to the left facing the terrace,” explained Tennick. She also pointed out the building, not the west side of the property which was the original boathouse. Tennick said, “The plan for that is to be an additional venue here on the property that will be able to accommodate smaller groups.” They are hoping to hold parties of up to 100 people making it the perfect space for bridal or baby showers, birthday parties, and other corporate and social events.

Eve described what makes weddings at Adams Estate such a magical experience, “I think that it’s the authentic history. It’s not someplace that’s been made to look old.”

Debbie and owner Eve Bass also remarked on the fact that a wedding party could use the boathouse for their rehearsal dinner and wedding in the main house or on the terrace, allowing for two different feels for each event, preserving the magic of the ceremony space for the day of.

Debbie added, “Everything’s original–the moldings, the doors, the floors.”

Further adding to the property to make their guest experiences that much more special Debbie expressed, “Coming soon, we’re going to have two honeymoon cottages that one will be included in the rental of the estate so that the bride and groom can stay there that evening.”

Adams Estate 2222 Lake Alfred Rd., Lake Alfred, FL 33850

“I think the term ‘classical southern elegance’ is overused, but they’re appropriate here because this is the real deal,” finished Eve.

After the construction of the first two, four more are planned to be built, with the intention of having up to 28 cottages, making Adams Estate a one-stop destination venue for weddings, corporate, and social events. havenmagazines.com

The Florida Highwaymen painted wide-bent palm trees, serene sunsets, churning oceans and bright red Poinciana trees. They painted from their garages and back yards on inexpensive Upson board and then on the weekends they traveled to sell their Highwaymen paintings to hotels, offices, businesses and individuals who appreciated the artwork for around $25 a piece. The creativity and talent of these artists has made them famous for their idyllic landscapes of rural Florida and they were inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004. Valentine’s Day “Staycation” at the Terrace Hotel Instead of stressing out about getting the perfect gift for your Valentine, gift them an experience. A sweet Valentine’s getaway isn’t far from home either. Between the restaurants, bars, and shopping that downtown Lakeland offers and the first-class amenities of the Terrace Hotel, you can take a cozy, romantic staycation right in your backyard. The historic Terrace Hotel was built in 1924, during the building boom of the 1920’s and opened in October of the same year donning the grand Beaux-Arts architectural style popular in the United States from the 1880’s through the 1920’s. The 10-story hotel was one of the three high rise buildings constructed during that “boom” and is considered the city’s first “grand” hotel.

for two together with a guest room at a deep discount to be bought as a package around this hearts and arrows holiday. On Valentine’s Day, you can either order from the regular menu of the Hotel’s fine dining establishment, the Terrace Grille, or you can order from their special Valentine’s menu. The Valentine’s meal comes with an appetizer, salad, entrée, and dessert, and can additionally be paired with a wine. “It’s unique. The dining experiences in the hotel are really absolutely remarkable,” commented Dunbar, adding that it is one of the finest restaurants in Central Florida. The 20 to 25-foot high Pecky Cypress ceilings, large bay windows, chandeliers, and Mezzanine Bar overlooking the dining room make it a singularly special experience.

The Terrace Hotel boasted many famous guests in its first prime, from musicians, industry leaders, movie stars, athletes, and architects including Frank Sinatra, Henry Ford, Lee Marvin, Bobby Jones, Fred Waring, Wayne King, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Once you’ve finished your Valentine’s meal for two, you can continue your night on the town in the heart of Lakeland. You and your sweetheart can take a stroll around Munn Park or Lake Mirror for some quiet time to connect or liven up your evening at downtown Lakeland’s many restaurants, bars, and taverns.

Timeshare tycoon David Siegel, whose family was the subject of the documentary The Queen of Versailles, bought the Terrace in 1973. He converted it to a long-term housing facility, which eventually fell into disrepair until being closed in 1986.

The Terrace is an especially popular place for weddings, often having 2 to 3 wedding groups in the hotel a week according to Dunbar. Weddings often take place in their Crystal Ballroom.

“By the time we came around to it in the mid-90’s,” said General Manager of the Terrace Hotel, Bruce Dunbar, “it had been acquired by the city of Lakeland and we renovated the entire thing.” Following a major 7-milliondollar restoration, the hotel reopened its doors on February 26, 1999, and has since taken back its place as a landmark and popular place to stay in Lakeland. The hotel’s past is one of its most romantic features. There’s just something about staying in a place that breathed in so much history and reflects the elegance and style of its birth period. During your staycation at the Terrace, you can explore and admire its architecture or drink in the view of Lake Mirror which the hotel overlooks. The hotel offers a total of 88 rooms - 73 luxurious guest rooms and 15 oversized suites. They have accommodations including valet parking, complimentary hotel-wide wifi, complimentary newspaper, a business center, room service, and pet-friendly accommodations in case your dog happens to be the Valentine joining you on your Lakeland staycation. According to the hotel’s manager, they typically put dinner

“We do a significant number of weddings outside on Kryger Park right across the street from the hotel. Frequently we do weddings on the loggia down on Lake Mirror and then the reception up on Kryger Park which is really a nice fit,” said Dunbar. There’s nothing more romantic and love-inspiring than seeing an excited wedding party celebrating the night before the big day or catching a peek at a ceremony in Kryger Park. As Valentine’s Day is a busy time for the hotel and the Terrace Grille, it would be prudent to book your staycation soon. You don’t have to go far from home to give your Valentine an unforgettable experience. The Terrace Hotel has the history, accommodations, dining, and location to do it all right in downtown Lakeland.
