LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Hello & Happy 2018! I am very excited about our January issue! It is filled with art! We feature Kenneth Treister, a world famous architect, sculptor and author. Mai Ly is an illustrator from Haines City currently living in Baltimore. Alexandra de Roos is an amazing teenager from Haines City currently studying ballet in NYC. On the cover, is the Haight Street Rat made by street artist Bansky. It was the focus of the movie, Saving Banksy. The piece tours the world and on January 27th you have the opportunity to view it in person. It will be making a stop in Winter Haven and we’ve got all the details! Street art is very controversial, but it’s part of a large and very important movement happening around the world. Some love it and some hate it.

Welcoming

We meet Bob Carlisle. He was in the Navy for half of his life and a photographer for even longer. He was the official photographer at the JFK funeral, and he has quite the story to tell. We also go out to eat the Crooked Bass & visit Solomon’s Castle.

LOCAL NEWS Residents say local celebration means a lot

“Happy Hanukkah,” said Rabbi Mendel Friedman of Chabad Jewish Center to those who came to the Hanukkah Menorah Lighting at Virginia Miller Park in Winter Haven Dec. 14. Friedman notes Hanukkah commemorates two miracles that took place during Temple times, during the era of the second Temple that was in Jerusalem. “The first miracle was that a small band of Jewish rebels took on the Syrian-Greek Empire. It was a huge Army,” he said. “They won them over. It took time. The idea was that the Syrian Greeks were oppressing them. They were not allowing them to practice religion properly. So it was a form of religious oppression,” said the rabbi. Chabad took the same menorah to Lakeland, Lake Wales and Sebring this year, he said. Janice Carl, attends the menorah lighting every year at Hanukkah, said she was raised Jewish. “My great grandparents founded an orthodox shul in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

All medical needs in one place

Winter Haven Medical Centers MBMG cut the ribbon to a new future with their Winter Haven facility, accompanied by the Greater Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce Dec. 13. As well as massage therapy, they will offer electric stimulation, cold laser therapy, ultrasound, heat and cold therapy, paraffin wax, the water table and some exercise. Patients must first register with the practice and then meet with Dr. Carlos Martinez so he can evaluate them. Dr. Nicholas Waslyn, chiropractor will be working at the Winter Haven facility Tuesday and Thursdays until the Lakeland office opens, then will work one day here and one day there. “It’s a great concept, it’s a one stop everything – if you need dental, if you need chiropractic, massage, medicine, instead of going all different places and it is affordable. It’s what everybody could use, I think it is happening in the future,” he said.

Powell win beats Hunnicutt for City Commission

JP Powell is celebrating a win in the 2017 election for Seat #5 on the Winter Haven City Commission, and is anxious to get to work. He beat current Mayor Steven Hunnicutt winning just more than 59 percent of the vote. After the Nov. 7 election produced a runoff between him and Hunnicutt, both men campaigned vigorously on various community issues. There are, Powell said, “several things,” he wants to look into as a

commissioner. Having previously served some 10 years on the commission, he comes to the table with experience, and said he is looking forward to working with the other commissioners.

Carson Rudy went UP in the Air for Convoy of Hope

Carson Rudy and his father, Pastor Shawn Rudy of Lake Wales, slept from Nov. 16-23, on a tent 20 feet in the air to raise money for Convoy of Hope. For seven days, Carson slept on a platform and watched the world drive by, some honking, some slowing down, and some turning in to donate to the cause. The goal at hand was to reach $20,000 in seven days and $250,000 in the next six years for Convoy of Hope. Those interested can give in person at Impact Church at 1201 Burns Ave., Lake Wales, or online at www.impactlw. org and click Up in the Air. “This is Carson’s third time in four years,” said his father. The most challenging part about being up on the platform he said, was the weather and using the bathroom. Every year they look forward to raising the money for the charity.

PetFest

They drove all the way from Plant City to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office PetFest event Dec. 16 in Winter Haven to buy a couple of cute furballs to expand their home. PetFest is put on by the sheriff’s office once a year at Animal Control, in partnership with numerous vendors who turned out for the occasion. Adoption fees were $30 and included shots, medical papers, Polk County animal license and tag, a chip and more. Morgan Stout walked out with a dog, a German shepherd and Kerr mix, which replaces one that had passed away not long ago. She did not say much. She hugged her dog tightly, and the dog seemed quite happy to find a “forever” home. And that is what PetFest is really all about, according to Animal Control Administrator Kristall Barber, who said the once a year pet adoption event is careful about the future homes of the pets who are adopted.

Panels: Polk should learn about exporting Exporting goods is one way to keep the economy going. At the recent Polk Goes Global Half-Day International Exporting Conference, Cory Skeates, president of the Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce, said, “A lot of people do not realize how big Polk is in international trade.” Held at Polk State College Lakeland Campus, the event saw about 100 people in attendance, from across the spectrum: small business owners, educators, large business owners, companies who provide service. The going feeling in the industry of export is that those companies who can export their services survive. According to Manny Mencia, senior vice president of International Trade & Business Development – Enterprise Florida, 2.2 million jobs are sustained by international business activity in the state. “In Florida, you are in the right location for business,” he said.

Four buddies help homeless vets

Carl Newman remembers when he was homeless. For one year and three months, he lived in his mini van. His parents begged him to move home with them. But he would not. “Mom and Dad visited me every day,” he said. But he told them, “I got myself into this mess and if I don’t get myself out of this mess, I will learn no lessons.” Fast forward many years. He and three military buddies were hanging out and noticed a homeless man who said he was a veteran. They decided to try and help him. They bought a little trailer and made arrangements at a campground to put his trailer not really on its own lot, but just sort of tucked away. And stipulated that he could work a few odd jobs around the campground to pay toward the spot. At first, he protested the help. He didn’t want a hand out. But eventually, they talked him into living in the camper. “Today, he’s got a job,” said Newman. That was just a beginning for Newman and his friends. Hunger and homelessness being a problem for many vets, Newman said last year they started doing a bunch of food drives. They did not advertise. It was just the four veteran buddies looking to help others.

Victory Ridge Academy debuts first play

In this era of schools focusing more on science, technology, math and job skills, art is sometimes an afterthought. Those who attended the Victory Ridge Academy play “Mars: Escape From the Meanies” Dec. 16-17 witnessed how art can reach kids like nothing else can. “Art brings out the best in all of us,” said play director Tinia Clarke. Based on her experience, around a year ago she wrote a book of poems titled, “I want to go to Mars.” That book of poems eventually evolved into a book called “Mars: Escape From the Meanies” which Lakeland artist Rachael Storjohann illustrated. Clarke then decided that she wanted to adapt the book 12

into a play using people with special needs as actors. Theatre Winter Haven Education Director Molly Judy helped Clarke write the script of the play. Victory Ridge Academy is a charter school in Lake Wales that serves kids with communication deficits, behavioral challenges and physical disabilities.

Military dad surprises son at school

U.S Army Staff Sgt. Jose Negron has been stationed in Guam for the last seven months, and his family, including wife Irma and Polk Avenue Elementary fifth grader Jose, didn’t expect him home for the Christmas season. Negron arrived in Florida in the wee hours Sunday morning, and stayed in a hotel until Tuesday, Dec. 12, when the surprise family reunion took place in front of the Lake Wales Charter System elementary school’s entire student body and staff. The school had gathered to honor winners of a contest centered around National Kindness Day. Jose’s class was picked as the winners, and he was selected to read a poem the class had put together about kindness. As Jose read, the curtains opened as his father appeared, prompting tears and cheers in the packed auditorium. School principal Gail Quam and assistant principal Shay Hixenbaugh were virtually the only school employees that knew of the plan, which was more than two weeks in the making.

Area officers, veterans help families in need Dozens of area children received Christmas gifts from Winter Haven Police Department officers and members of American Legion Post 8 Dec. 16. In the morning, WHPD Chief Charlie Bird said Operation Reach Out benefited 51 children in 13 families. The annual assistance program has been ongoing for more than 20 years. WHPD DARE Officer Kris Bhoj said counselors at 10 area schools helped select which kids needed help the most. “The main purpose is giving presents to kids who may not have received any

this year,” Bird said. “While it builds relationships with the community it’s really all about the kids. It reminds us how fortunate we are, puts things in perspective, and it helps my officers to see the reactions of the children.”

WORDS Amy Sexson

“People either love me, hate me, or they really don’t care.” -Banksy When does vandalism become art? Street Art and Graffiti Art have a long and controversial past. They are different from each other, however they share some of the same roots of political unrest. Artists are willing to risk jail or even death to get their message out. What began as spray painting on the side of a train or a building has become a global art movement that is making big headlines and art collectors very wealthy.

havenmagazines.com

20

21

Graffiti art is more word-based, meaning the artist’s tag name is the art. It’s all about typography and style. Street art is more image-based, most likely created by a trained artist. The image will usually have a message relevant to the times that the public can relate to. It’s almost always located in a high traffic area and will most-likely end up being painted over at the building owner’s expense.

Negotiations with the building’s owner began. Greif wanted to get the painting down and donate it to a museum rather than have it destroyed. The owners were running out of time and were faced with paying a fine if they didn’t paint over it. (Until 2014, SF had a “Graffiti Fine” to be paid by the owner of the building if the graffiti wasn’t removed in a timely fashion.) After many months, they agreed on a deal and Greif started the removal process.

Sometimes street art has been commissioned, in other words, they have permission to paint. We see murals painted around Central Florida, and they are generally accepted by the residents. What about when they aren’t given permission? It has become standard practice for famous street artists to have their piece stolen within hours of painting it. Entire walls are cut down and sold at high-end auction houses for millions of dollars, and the artist will see none of that money. It’s the artist’s intention for the art to be seen by the general public for free. By the nature of it, it’s supposed to be temporary, too. So when does vandalism become something more? At what point does it become art?

The wall was taken down, board by board and stored in Greif’s house while looking for a permanent home. Unfortunately, museums weren’t interested in taking it because it was only authenticated on Banksy’s website, not in person. The SF MOMA also felt that some street artists’ intent is to have their art destroyed or not survive for very long. They wouldn’t want to keep anything against an artist’s wishes. Why does Banksy keep himself a secret? Greif was offered $200,000 after he initially took the Haight Street Rat down. Banksy could be profiting millions of dollars if he wanted. Greif explains why Banksy stays hidden, “At first he needed to guard his identity because the police had made him their number one target for prosecution. Over time, as he became an international sensation, it became about simply not wanting the after effects of ‘celebrity status.’ I have not met Banksy, but friends and contacts who know him say he just wants to paint and do his work on his own terms and doesn’t want the hassles that come with being a celebrity.”

According to Brian Greif, an art collector from Nashville and Executive Producer of Saving Banksy, “It is both vandalism and art. That’s what makes this art so interesting. Artists in the Street Art and Graffiti genres risk arrest and even death to put their work out their for the public. I don’t know many art forms where artists have been jailed or killed doing their art. In LA, a graffiti artist named Psych went to jail for eight years. There are several artists who have died doing the art. Skate One, Nexst and Robbo are just a few of the prominent artists who died actually painting in the streets.”

I asked Greif if he knew Banksy’s real name. “I do not know who he is. I do know that he is not the guy from Massive Attack. I do know he is a real individual (not a collective). Other than that, I have no idea,” he said. Greif is referring to a rumor that a band member from the Bristol, England band, Massive Attack was the real Banksy. Paintings supposedly showed up in the same cities wherever the band happened to be touring. Banksy is also rumored to be from Bristol.

The most famous street artist in the world is Banksy. And that’s where the Haight Street Rat painted in San Francisco in April, 2010 comes in. Banksy had spent some time in San Francisco, explained Greif. “I was heavily involved in the street art scene in San Francisco. When Banksy came in 2010, I saw the tremendous public reaction to the paintings he did each night. Banksy was in SF for about 10-days. He did one painting each night. Every morning people would scramble to see the new Banksy. It was disappointing to see the pieces get painted over or tagged within a few days. I decided to try to save at least one of the paintings so it could be shared with the public. Banksy is undoubtedly the most famous artist in the Street Art movement. His most iconic symbol is the Rat. In my opinion, there is significant historical significance to the Haight Street Rat, and it needed to be preserved.”

Greif talks about the future for the Haight Street Rat after it leaves Winter Haven. “We have not found a permanent home yet. I haven’t had a serious museum inquiry since Saving Banksy was released. We will continue to do the traveling exhibit. It’s been extremely gratifying to show the painting at places like the public library in Kokomo, Indiana. Over 1,500 people showed up the first night, people of all ages. In Windsor, Canada, the exhibit venue curated a show of art from ten Windsor area artists. The artists sold art at the exhibit, and it was a great showcase for them. I might be wrong, but I feel like the traveling exhibits are doing a lot to help raise awareness and generate positive discussion about Street Art and Graffiti.”

Greif believes Street Art and Graffiti are very important art movements, part of a larger, global movement. “Because these paintings have been done illegally, they are destroyed quickly. I believe it is important to save key public pieces from this movement. Not everything can or should be saved, but iconic pieces by the top artists in these genres must be preserved.” havenmagazines.com

Greif has been offered $1.7 Million for the Haight Street Rat, he’s not selling. No Ball Games - a painting Banksy did for the London Olympics was sold at auction for $1.2 Million. Flower Girl sold at auction for $209,000. Kissing Coppers sold at auction for $575,000. Slave Labor sold at auction for $1.1 million. “The irony of Bansky street art is this; here’s a guy with one and he wants to donate it to a museum, and they don’t want to take it. Yet, someone’s prepared to buy it for a half million dollars. That’s the beauty of street art.” -Ben Eine Street art is controversial. The artists don’t always have permission to do what they do. They want to create art in public places so that the general public can see it. Not everyone will go to a gallery show, but everyone can see it if it’s painted on a wall downtown. They want to create something with a message, that evokes thought, gets people talking. What do you think? To learn more about the Haight Street Rat coming to Winter Haven on January 27th, watch Saving Banksy on Netflix or itunes.

Style Ambassadors, Trend Hunters and Model Citizens. We are Nando & Sally Del Castillo. Follow along as we transform spaces into super cool Airbnbs.

As a husband and wife team, we do anything and everything we can that deals with Design. Our work is hard and humbling, but the payoff is huge because we get to do it together and leave behind a stylish mark for others to enjoy. Between the two of us we have 35 years racked up in just the fashion industry alone. Nando has modeled for the highest designers in Paris, Milan & New York. I went to Kent State University for fashion design and merchandising. We’ve both worked in front of and behind the camera. Style, Fashion, Set Dressing & Function. We are huge advocates of travel, new experiences and really cool graphic T’s that represent where you’re and where you’ve been. That’s why one of our favorite aspects of our job is designing Airbnb spaces. We not only decorate them but we often stay in them when we travel! We’ve decorated boutique hotels, mansions and tiny houses (soup to nuts). We are based out of Winter Haven (where Nando grew up) and Upstate NY, which is where we do the majority of our film work. However, Winter Haven has a magnetic pull, so we’re in NY...less and less. We are here to share with y’all some stylish insider design ideas and fun side stories/adventures that happen along the way. We love Airstreams, metal, antiques, horses, good wood, leather, fabric,up cycled pieces, local art and cheeky sayings. Xo Sally & Nando DC Fashion and design don’t just apply to apparel in our world. When the idea came up to turn a semiunused space on the horse farm into an Airbnb, it was a no-brainer. We knew it needed some updates and a little bit of our magic touch, but it has so much going for it. For starters, the location is obviously on point because it’s in bustling Winter Haven. The snowbirds are returning, weekenders are coming and LEGOLAND fans are looking for another element to their LEGO adventure. The Farm Life definitely compliments the Brick Life in a unique way. People come to escape from the north, all over the world and even as close as Lakeland! Why not be ambassadors and share our little slice of Heaven with others. We didn’t foresee this project being as labor intensive or time consuming as others. That being said, we still had a challenge due to the size of the havenmagazines.com

space and some Feng Shui issues. Another hurdle was Nando’s mom occasionally popping in and insisting on tropical colors and design elements (which we typically steer away from). We assessed what needed done so we could then establish a budget and a timeline. The only other concern was how we would accommodate and stylishly pull off the “tropical” request. We started by removing all furniture and decorations from the space, and giving it a thorough ceiling to floor cleaning and a fresh coat of paint. Next, we decided which pieces of preexisting furniture and decor we could use. We made a shopping list and hit up all of our local “go to” shops. Being on a budget and preferring to reuse & upcycle, we frequent Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity thrift stores to get plates, art and furniture. For this project, we knew we needed a sturdy daybed. Like magic, one appeared outside of an Antique shop in downtown Winter Haven but, it was missing the finials. That just meant an additional item to add to the treasure hunt. No problem. Saturday morning bright and early, we went straight to the Silvermoon Flea Market. There, Nando found 4 Billiard balls that we spray-painted white and glued to the daybed frame. The flea vendor still probably can’t understand why we didn’t buy the complete rack. Ha-ha. We found a line of sheets by Martha Stewart at Macy’s (who incidentally has been given a second chance at hipness thanks to Snoop Dogg). Her WHIM COLLECTION sheets are so crisp and wash up beautifully. They sport cute little patterns that go with our established Western/ Tropical/Racehorse theme. Oh my! The next morning, on Craigslist, I searched for “horse lamps” and there they were. I swear it’s like a little Google fairy comes to me in the middle of the night. Five minutes down the road, someone was selling the perfect “horse lamps” with shades that look just like our Eagle Lake sunrise. Feeling confident that we were in the home stretch, we hired a local artist to make little signs to be framed and hung around the BnB. Ex: Wi-Fi 26

password, feel free to check chicken nests for eggs, Yes. Tiny lizards do sneak in from outside (no they don’t bite), etc. They add charm and make the guests feel special. One of my favorite details is actually outside. We bought paint at Broke and Poor in Auburndale and silver glitter to make a little reflective strip so guests don’t trip on a “step down” by the pool. I then painted the diving board (blue and white striped) as a nod to our best friend who is French. He spends winters on the farm. More details include making a bonfire pit and putting solar lights along pathways. Inside, we have the original billboard from Nando’s first Mountain Dew Commercial hanging. It was shot in the late 80’s around town. It features cowboy Nando riding a horse through the lake pulling a water-skier, Brad Pitt. Ultimately, we wanted to create a fun, nostalgic, and relaxed atmosphere combined with a unique experience that our guests wouldn’t forget. Finally, we made a custom book that highlights our favorite local spots like: Where to grab a craft beer? Where to see alligators up-close? Where to enjoy the best sunset in town. The “Journal” is complete with business cards, social media links, websites, our menu faves and maps. Guests can write their recommendations too. Oh yeah! We always have the most current issue of Haven Magazine on the coffee table for them to read while they enjoy a glass of OJ and farm fresh eggs! Upcoming BnB transformation: We will turn an Airstream trailer into its own freestanding BnB on the farm next to the bonfire pit. Nature Meets Art at Lake Wales Arts Council

Lake Wales Arts Council is bringing together the talents of Winter Haven resident photographer, Mike Potthast and Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd for a photography exhibition, Nature Meets Art, starting January 3rd and running through February 28th. A free reception and gallery talk for the exhibition will be held on January 10th from 5-7 p.m. A seemingly unlikely pairing for an exhibit, the two explained how they know each other with Sheriff Judd saying, “I knew Mike Potthast’s dad before Mike was even born, and I have watched him evolve into the most talented photographer and artist there is any place in the state of Florida. He and I have been good friends for several years; in fact, our East Polk County lake houses are just two doors apart.” Mike explained, “I had the opportunity to photograph the Sheriff for a magazine many years ago. During the shoot, we talked about photography and he shared his enjoyment being behind the camera when he is not being the Sheriff. We became good buddies sharing tips and tricks taking photos.” Mike grew up around photography, with his family owning their own studio. After learning the craft, he studied Commercial Photography and obtained a B.A. in Business Management. Following his time in college, Mike worked as a freelance photographer for the Orlando Magic

havenmagazines.com

and even transitioned for a time into the world of motion picture, working as a producer for Time Warner. In 2001, Mike put his forte for photography and business degree to work when he opened his own studio, Potthast Studios in Winter Haven.

As for the Sheriff’s part of the exhibit, “It will predominantly be nature through the eyes of the Sheriff in Polk County–landscapes and maybe a few critters from various parts of America,” Judd explains. Other than their love of photography, what do these two men have in common? Their understanding and appreciation for a community’s connection to its art. Mike elucidates, “Arts are involved with everything we love: Watching a movie with your kids, a TV series on Netflix, an antique chair that has a lot of character, the boat you spend the day in on the lake, or a well-crafted beer at Grove Roots. When someone takes time to perfect and express themselves in what they do, I think you can consider it a form of art.”

Sheriff Judd describes his journey with photography saying, “I’ve loved photography from the time I was a teenager, but had absolutely no time to develop my love for nature photography. While attending college part-time, raising children, and climbing through the ranks of the Sheriff’s Office, it is now my number one stress reliever.” According to Mike, he has been producing his pieces for this exhibit in collaboration with DHS Design Guild (created the custom florals) and Lynda Whitney helped with some of the models’ hair and aesthetic design, for four to five months. He will also include some from years ago that he loves. The exhibit will combine the perspectives of the two photogs, paralleling the beauty of artfully composed shots of people and the spontaneous splendor nature has to offer.

Sheriff Grady compounds to Mike’s thought, saying, “I believe that the arts represent peace, love, safety, and security, and it begins inside an individual’s heart and soul. When someone can express themselves through art there is no need to express themselves through violence.” www.lakewalesartscouncil.org (863) 676-8426

For his part, Mike explains, will be, “a series of portraits of local women I used with a combination of stylized designs and live floral arrangements. It was a team effort with my studio staff and other talented artists I love working with.”

Ridge Art Association 68th Anniversary Fine Arts Exhibition

Ridge Art Association will showcase the very best of what artists far and wide have to offer at the 68th Anniversary Fine Arts Exhibition to be held January 4 – January 21st of this year. Though RAA holds many crowd-drawing themed art shows throughout the year from their Aviation Exhibit to their Black and White Show, Ridge Art’s Executive Director Christy Hemenway calls this fine arts show, “The best of the best of the year.” A staple show since the Ridge Art Association was founded in 1950. The Fine Arts Exhibition draws artists from all over Polk County and beyond to submit stand-out, original works completed in the last 2 years. This show and all of RAA’s others are inclusive of all media from drawings, oils, acrylics, watercolors, graphics, computer art, mixed media, fiber, sculpture, and photography. Hemenway expressed that it’s beneficial to encourage all forms of art as it stimulates people, artists and beholders alike, to experience new things, saying, “Some people only think of art as a painting on a wall and it’s not. There’s so much more to art than that. It’s whatever affects you and evokes emotion.” RAA usually receives around 125 pieces and has the ability to show between 60-80. Receiving for the show begins on December 29th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and continues December 30th from 8:30 am to 11

am. The judging will take place that day at 11:15 am, followed by a critique at 3 pm where the public is welcome to attend. “It’s usually a pretty good learning experience. Sometimes, their critiques are an education in and of themselves,” explained Hemenway.

you may not understand a piece of artwork because it’s abstract or not your usual taste. “You have to look in and see what the artist is trying to tell you. You have to spend a few minutes with a piece of art, not just walk by it. You have to look at it and allow it to speak to you.”

The winners will be announced the afternoon of the critique. According to Hemenway, this show offers more prize money than any of their other shows, drawing artists from further away. A total of $2,200 in prize money will be handed out, with ‘Best of Show’ claiming $800.

The 68th Anniversary Fine Arts Exhibition will have a reception on Saturday, January 6th from 6-8pm. To find out more information about this or any of RAA’s other exhibitions, visit, www.ridgeart.org or call them at (863) 291-566.

Ridge Art Association and other organizations like them are invaluable to the encouragement and fostering of creativity in the community by providing a space for artists to show and culture to grow. “The beautiful thing about Ridge Art is that we’re free and open to the public. It’s a really great place to go and see artwork because art enriches your life just like travel and music do–they kind of take you outside of that box of what your everyday life is. You can look into a painting and you can dream or you can transport yourself there into a place that you can’t see every day. If you take advantage of that and you look, you just grow more as a person,” remarked Hemenway. “I think it’s really important for parents to bring their children, to teach that they can come and they can see art and appreciate what it is,” said Hemenway. She explained that

The Crooked Bass Grill & Tavern Right off Scenic Highway in Babson Park, ensconced across the road from the shores of Crooked Lake, sits The Crooked Bass Grill & Tavern. A seafood sanctuary making regulars out of customers far and wide, the restaurant is owned by husband and wife Tim and Tammy Bracewell. “My husband started vacationing here at Crooked Lake in 1970 and then I started coming with him in ’78. We just love the area,” explained Tammy. After spending time vacationing on Crooked Lake and owning a lake house there for 17 years, the Bracewells decided to move from their home in the Lithia area to make a home in Babson Park in 2015. A few months later, on February 2nd of 2016, they opened the doors of The Crooked Bass to the public. Tammy spoke about their approach to running the tavern. “He’s more into the recipes and the cooking and I’m more into the front of the house, greeting our guests and marketing and the communications side of things.” Tammy describes the atmosphere of the eatery as warm, friendly and casual. “It’s very family-oriented, even though we have a bar, we have a lot of families that come in. We have a little kids corner where the kids can color and do things.” The Crooked Bass has something for just about everyone, specializing primarily in seafood. From grouper, Mahi, Ahi tuna, salmon, catfish, crab legs, fresh oysters, scallops, frog legs, and more, they have also gained patron notoriety for their steaks, wings and burgers. “Even though we’re a seafood place, we have a lot of people that rave about our burgers. We do half-pound, hand-patty burgers–we have a Crooked Lake Burger that is kind of our signature burger. It has jalapeño peppers, pepper jack cheese, grilled onions, and bacon,” commented Tammy. Apart from their signature Crooked Lake Burger, Tammy says that shrimp is another big seller. She described the batter as “a light dusting” as to not overpower the taste of the shrimp.

get accepted to college, that’s huge,” said Tammy about the Homeless Students in Transition kids. She continued, “I think getting involved with the community and engaging our guests in those efforts helps people feel connected.” Feeling good about dining with an establishment that gives back to the community, I journeyed to The Crooked Bass. The lake theme is apparent from the moment you enter. From paddles and poles on the wall, light fixtures made out of tin buckets that might be used to carry bait when heading out to fish, and an anchor made of shells on the wall, getting into the laid-back lake vibe was easy to do. Even their full bar had accents of corrugated metal you might see used for the tin roof of a lake retreat or boathouse. Tackle boxes held the salt, pepper and sugar packets on the booth I sat in and the wall next to me boasted pictures of happy customers–families, couples, regulars, young and old. It looked like the photo album of one big happy community family. Tammy’s description of The Crooked Lake Burger left me with no second thoughts on what I wanted. The burger basket came with a juicy, thick patty, topped with lettuce, tomato, and the other fixin’s Tammy described along with mayo in a ramekin to the side and an order of crispy crinklecut fries. Yum! It’s clear how this legendary burger made a name for itself amongst usual customers. As for the future of The Crooked Bass Grill & Tavern, they hope to continue enhancing their local presence, growing and expanding their reach to travelers passing through on Highway 27. Tammy hopes to “give them a local taste” of what Crooked Lake and Babson Park have to offer. 1010 N Scenic Hwy, Babson Park, FL 33827 Mon-Thurs 11:30am-9pm Fri & Sat 11:30am-midnight Sun 11:30am-8pm (863) 589-5887 www.crookedbass.com Facebook: @TheCrookedBass

Tammy and Tim feel it’s important to stay connected to the causes of the community, saying they support the local elementary school through holding a spirit night. They also work with their guests to help provide Christmas gifts for the teens in the Homeless Students in Transition program at Lake Wales High School. Last year, they even provided notebook computers to students from the same program who were accepted into college. “These are students that have an extraordinary amount of obstacles, being displaced–they don’t have a place to live or they’re living with friends or relatives. Robert Carlisle Robert Carlisle, now an accomplished photographer and curator of his own collection of Navy photography, was born in 1924 in Patterson, New Jersey. When Robert was 4, his father moved them to Wheeling, West Virginia where he grew up. He recalls sitting in front of the radio years later, only 17-years-old, with his father when news came over the airwaves that the Japanese had just bombed Pearl Harbor. “The next day, the day after Pearl Harbor, I joined the Navy.”

Walking around the shop, a story emerges from each photo that he has collected over the years. He walked us around his studio and pointed them out, detailing each one. He gave the account behind a photo taking place in 1945, 10 or 15 days after the war ended. His ship was caught in the largest Typhoon to ever strike the Navy, Typhoon “Louise.” “Our ship got sunk and when it went down, it only went down to the level of the main deck. It didn’t go any further because we were over a sandbar or coral, so that’s as far as it went down,” recalled Carlisle. “The next day when the storm was over and the tide went out, we were on the beach, we were ashore with our ship. I mean, a 500-foot ship on the beach. Not only us, there were others–not all Navy, a lot of commercial tankers and that kind of stuff. I have pictures of the storm.”

Carlisle told an amusing story about having to gain weight to meet the Navy’s 105 lb requirement to join. He went into the recruiting office where he ate bananas all day until his weight reached the regulation 105 lb. Everybody in the office took note and he was able to join the Navy. Carlisle smiled wryly, “Guess what I weigh today?” Robert started out as a Boatswain’s Mate in the Navy and explained that about every 6 months out of the year, he would have to be a Master at Arms, “basically a policeman” as he describes it. “I enjoyed being a Boatswain’s Mate, but a Master at Arms was not good billet for me,” he explained.

Carlisle pointed to a sobering collage of photographs from the funeral of President John F. Kennedy. “I photographed John F. Kennedy’s funeral and I was the only photographer allowed to walk around the whole tour.” The only mistake, he admitted was, “I missed going up around the block to the church where little John John was standing and saluting,” he said, speaking about the famous photograph of JFK’s son.

Robert said, “I started putting in requests to be a Photographer’s Mate, but it’s a long line. I was 5 different ratings in the Navy.” While under the rating of Construction Driver, Carlisle was transferred to Greenland. Due to an overabundance of Construction Drivers, the Navy made him a Construction Mechanic.

Moving around the room he said, “There’s a shot where I went out when the astronauts returned. A photographer had to be there when the capsule would splash in the water. It was Gordon Cooper, I was there in a chopper photographing his return.”

When he arrived, the Public Works Officer asked Carlisle about his mechanic skills. Admitting he knew little about mechanics, the officer asked Robert what else he could do. He replied, “I can type 60 words a minute and I’m a pretty good writer and a pretty good photographer.” The Public Works Officer told Robert he could take over the station newspaper, be his yeoman, and run the photo lab.

He showed a picture in 1957 when they were sent to Litchfield Park, AZ to shoot “touch and goes” where young pilots have to practice touching and taking off. After about a week he told the Aircraft Commander that he had gotten all the photos he needed and was going into the desert to take photos there. When he returned to the barracks from his desert photo shoot, Robert said, “I walked in and the kid jumped back in the desk!” Carlisle had been reported dead after the plane he would have been on crashed, killing everyone on board.

After a year in Greenland, it was announced that his base was to be shut down. Carlisle was assured that any tour of duty he asked for out of Greenland would be granted. “I put in for photo school, Pensacola, and I got it,” he said, almost with the same air of disbelief when he first learned his request was granted. From there, Robert worked first in motion pictures for the Navy, before moving to still photography.

Mr. Carlisle was visibly moved when discussing his most recognized photograph. He was present for the opening ceremony of the USS Arizona Memorial and took a photograph that the Navy made 44,000 lithos of and distributed to every base and ship in the Navy. They then came back and ordered another 40,000. A lot of men lost their life that day, and he sincerely could still feel the loss.

After retiring for a few years, he was sworn back into the Navy. Robert Carlisle spent a total of 45 years enlisted, and finally retired for good in 1986. After owning a photography studio in Orchid Springs for 15 years, Robert took a three-year hiatus, eventually opening another store on Cypress Gardens Road that he ran for another 10 years. Bob now has a shop called Bob’s Photo Works off Cypress Gardens Blvd. You can buy prints of any of the photos Carlisle took while in the Navy.

With a studio full of Navy history and memories, Robert Carlisle has a lot to teach us still. “Presently, I’m 93 and I’m striking for 100.” You can see his photographs and buy prints, plak-its, and ceremonial certificates by visiting his studio at 360 Cypress Gardens Blvd., Winter Haven or visiting his website, www.navyshipphotos.com.

He also uses Photoshop to create images saying, “They’re not actually photographs, they’re pieces of art I’ve created on the computer.” havenmagazines.com

Kenneth Treister

Renowned artist, Kenneth Treister has settled in Winter Haven after many years in South Florida, where he created most of his work. Treister is a versatile artist known for many different architectural buildings, many books full of his photography and sculptures around Florida. In 1963, Treister started a community garden in Coconut Grove called Elizabeth Virrick Park. He added whimsical flowers for shade, which reminds you of Alice in Wonderland and colorful hearts around the park. Treister also built a community center and library within the park. This project took 50 years to complete. “Its construction and stained glass are unique,” said Treister. Treister created Gumenick Chapel in Greater Miami in 1967. “The chapel was designed as a sculptural environment for a single person or a congregation to become ‘one with God,’” said Treister. “Architecture becomes sculpture and sculpture becomes architecture.” He created the chapel with the use of ferro-cement, a system of reinforced mortar or plaster applied over layer of metal mesh. In his book published in 2000, “Gumenick Chapel: The Sophie and Nick Gumenick Chapel, Temple Israel of Greater Miami” readers are able to see photos of the chapel taken by Treister himself. In 1973, Treister built Office in the Grove, the second office building in Miami. Office in the Grove is a nine-story office building that sits on tall green berms, and introduced hidden parking, a first in Miami. The inside of the building was built without traditional office hallways, palm tree light fixtures and representations of the Everglades’ flora and fauna right up to the herons on the brass elevator doors. “Office in the Grove is primarily about the integration of landscape and art into the total fabric of architecture,” said Treister, “These elements were not added as decoration but are an integral part of the building’s being.” In 1979, Treister created an enclosed space with courtyards and open streets with a lot of texture, patterns and sculptures called Mayfair. Mayfair started as a three-level shopping center with at least 50 stores and open courtyards. In 1985, the Mayfair House was added as well as another fivelevel building which held at least 70 more stores, including Burdines. Mayfair House’s outside greeted its visitors with a giant mural of butterfly wings and each suite included an enclosed balcony with a personal hot tub. “I love the dense landscape of Coconut Grove and the serenity and human scale of enclosed courts,” he said. Treister’s most famed piece of art is The Holocaust Memorial in Miami, FL. Approached by a group of survivors in 1985 to design a memorial, he started the memorial located at 1933-1945 Meridian Avenue, which opened in 1990. The memorial consists of a 50-foot high arm made from bronze with over 100 figures trying to climb the arm, taken from real photos taken during the time. He also recreated the photos on granite plaques to show the gruesome things that were done to Jews during World War II. “I wanted to create an open, easy to envision, literal and understandable memorial to the six million Jews who were slaughtered,” said Treister. “This was the only time in history when an entire people were marked for death.” In 1993, Treister published “A Sculpture of Love and Anguish: The Holocaust Memorial, Miami Beach, Florida,” which contains the tragic photos, texts and other documents of the holocaust as well as the marvelous architecture of the memorial. “The totality of the Holocaust cannot be created in stone or bronze… the rich diversity of European Jewish culture, now lost, cannot be expressed…the murder of one and one-half million children when joy turned to sorrow, cannot be sculpted…but I had to try,” he said, “Six million moments of death cannot be understood…but we all must try.” Most of the sculptures featured in the memorial were created in Taiwan or Mexico City. Most of the photos that were recovered were taken by the Nazis. Treister redesigned the Temple Emanu-el in Greater Miami in the early 2000s. In 2010, Treister created a bronze sculpture called “The Dove of Peace” for the

synagogue, which now sits at the main entrance. His work on the synagogue included the Abraham Frost Sanctuary, the Tree of Life doors, a stained glassed wall that resembles several of the Jewish symbols, Star of David and stained glass windows. His 2004 publication, “Cherubim & Palm Trees: The Judaic Art of Temple Emanu-El” shows readers more on the Temple Emanu-el as well as other temples. “With my work, I try to create a humanistic environment,” said Treister, “Where people feel secure, content and joyful.” Treister created over 50 home designs, including his own 11,000-square-foot Courtyard home in Coconut Grove in 1959. “Courtyard houses were the primary architectural form throughout history, without regard to geography, culture or religion,” said Treister, “Now the court has been lost as part of the architect’s vocabulary and we build what I call ‘object houses,’ houses that are part of the streetscape and not the family’s personal life.” Other homes include the Blank home in 1961 which introduced portable walls, the Cohen home in 1961, the Blank house in 1963, the Berkowitz home in 1963 and the Wolfe residence in 1969. He also designed a doctor’s office in 1963, several condominiums and two schools. Treister’s work can be seen in Central Florida as well. He designed the bima for the Temple Beth Shalom in Winter Haven, published a book with local Winter Haven sculpture artist, David Price called “Bok Tower Gardens: America’s Taj Mahal” in 2013 and published “The Fusion of Architecture & Art: The Judaic Work of Kenneth Treister” in 2015 and “Gardens, Architecture & Art: The Humanistic Architecture of Kenneth Treister” in 2017. “He’s like this fabulous work horse,” said Price, “A renaissance man that never slows down.” Treister also created “The Nautilus Pavilion” for the Outback Oasis in Winter Haven. “The Fusion of Architecture & Art: The Judaic Work of Kenneth Treister” is the first installment of Treister’s life’s work with a forward by Yitz Greenburg and photos by Laszlo Regos. This book features his work in synagogues, churches and his most famous piece, the Holocaust Memorial. “Gardens, Architecture & Art: The Humanistic Architecture of Kenneth Treister” is the second installment of his life’s works and has a nine-page forward by Tom Wolfe. “This book is an architectural autobiography of my work over the last 60 years,” said Treister. It is compiled of his courtyard architecture, landscape of the architecture and humanistic architecture and can be purchased at www.shop.booksandbooks.com/book/9780692808672. “The Nautilus Pavilion” is based on the geometric golden rectangle, which is also nature’s nautilus shape. “I have taken nature’s straight lines in my sculpture’s walls and roof members to create the spiraling shape of the Nautilus,” said Treister, “the sculpture’s beauty is felt when the multitude of patterns are formed as the sun or moon’s rays cast their magic while dancing in and out of the clouds.” This sculpture portrays how things grow naturally and require the many layers that have to be revealed to see its inner beauty. Treister is a multi-talented artist: photography, architecture, painter and author. He has done so many significant pieces of art over the last 60 years that have made a huge impact on South and Central Florida. “Ken always has new ideas,” said Price. Treister has several book will become published in the future. “One [is] on my work with Frank Lloyd Wright and other [are] on world architecture,” said Treister, “Including a book on courtyard architecture and gardens.” Treister’s archives can be viewed in the Smathers Library at the University of Florida and his photography can be viewed permanently at Polk State College’s Fine Arts Auditorium in Winter Haven. More of Kenneth Treister’s books include: “Chinese Architecture, Urban Planning and Landscape Design: A Series of Essays” (1987), “Habaneros: Photographs of The People of Havana” (1997), “Havana Forever: A Pictorial and Cultural History of An Unforgettable City” (2009), “Maya Architecture: Temples in The Sky” (2013) and “Easter Island’s Silent Sentinels: The Scripture and Architecture of Rapa Nui” (2015). 42

ILLUSTRATION Mai Ly - Mean Girl Series

Mai Ly Degnan Illustrating her Dreams Growing up, Mai Ly Degnan described herself as more of an indoor kid with drawing being her favorite hobby. Little did that creative child know that one day her knack for drawing would grant her a career as an illustrator, producing work for well-known companies.

The range of subject matter mentioned earlier usually depends on the prompt from the art director. “I guess I’m good at drawing funny, sad lonesome girls, so those are the stories I usually get hired to illustrate…. which I don’t mind at all since they are my favorite things to draw,” said Mai Ly. Each work’s severity or humor depends on the audience or medium she’s drawing for. She gave details, “Something illustrated for NPR is typically more serious, while something illustrated for VICE can definitely be more funny and weird.”

Mai Ly grew up in Haines City and says, “I definitely preferred drawing inside over outdoor recess. It wasn’t until I took my first art class in college that I realized that studying art was my real passion and that it could be more than just a hobby.” It was taking that first art class that gave her the internal nudge to transfer from her previous major in biology to the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia to study illustration.

As far as a favorite illustration, Mai Ly credits her “Mean Girls” series as not only special for her stylistically, but also for the impact it made on her career saying, “Mostly because they were real turning points for me in my work style-wise. They also helped me develop a solid visual narrative that has influenced me since. These were also pieces that really helped make a name for myself through awards from 3x3 Magazine and American Illustration.”

Currently living in Baltimore, Maryland, Mai Ly makes a living as a freelance illustrator and Illustration Professor at Towson University. In the summer, she teaches high school pre-college students at Maryland Institute College of Art.

Her own blooming illustration career aside, Mai Ly loves to teach. Having just finished her first entire year of teaching, she plans to do more. “Getting students excited about illustration was wonderful to see, and I’d really want to teach more in the future.” One more thing Mai Ly is extremely passionate about–pugs. To that, I say, who isn’t?!

All of Mai Ly’s work is hand drawn with pencil and micron pen and digitally colored in Photoshop. A look at her website www.mailydegnan.com, gives an understanding of how this Haines City girl was able to take her passion for illustration to the professional level. With talent splashed across every illustration, every stroke of her pencil adds a depth to the piece, breathing life into the characters within it. Though the drawings are exaggerations, or her interpretation of people and scenarios, the situations Mai Ly portrays range from humorous to sad to nostalgic, giving them a tinge of reality that draws you into them.

The future looks colorful for Mai Ly Degnan. She makes greeting cards which she would like to grow into a larger business. She also recently finished a middlegrade book cover with Harper Collins, an experience she describes as, “A major dream come true.” She hopes to work more in the children’s book field saying, “Being biracial, I think it’s really important to represent diversity in children’s books, and one day I’d really love to write my own.”

With such relatable imagery, I was curious where she garners her inspiration. “Much of my inspiration comes from the internet, pop culture, trashy TV, independent films and everyday life. I really enjoy poking fun at everyday insecurities and social awkwardness. I’m a naturally awkward person, so I never have to look far for new ideas,” explained Mai Ly.

If you want to own some of Mai Ly’s illustrations, you can buy personal pieces, enamel pins, and greeting cards at her Etsy store, https://www.etsy.com/ au/shop/MailyDegnan. She says she will also do the occasional personal commission when she’s not too busy. You can look through the boundless depths of her talent at her website www.mailydegnan.com.

She said that much of her published work begins with a prompt from an art director explaining, “We work collaboratively on a project and we both come to the table with our own ideas.” Regarding her own creative process, Mai Ly always begins with brainstorming. “Much of my time is spent making lists and jotting down ideas. I work through dozens of ideas, where I filter them down to 3-4 finished sketches. From there, I email them to my art director for approval. Once they choose the sketch they like the most, I then finish the illustration in full color,” she elaborated.

PHOTOGRAPH Moments By Angela

Alexandra de Roos What is it that drives someone to become the best in what they’re passionate about? Singers, dancers, artists–what special quality do some have that push them from taking a hobby to something much bigger? I don’t have the answer, but I do know that 14-year-old ballerina Alexandra de Roos has got it. Alexandra is from Winter Haven. She was born with hip dysplasia, making her legs and hips turn out. “The doctor didn’t really think I was going to be able to walk. It had been a year and I hadn’t started walking or trying to walk,” she explained. Her doctor recommended she see a podiatrist who told her parents that she had seen many ballerinas that started out with similar disabilities. She recommended inserts in Alexandra’s shoes and exercises for physical therapy. Taking the podiatrist’s comments to heart, her parents called every dance studio in Winter Haven to see if they would take such a young child, Alexandra was only a year and a half at the time. Barbara’s Centre for Dance agreed to take the toddler. “That’s when I started dancing,” she reminisced. That is where Alexandra fell in love with dance. She said her parents would ask her every year if she wanted to continue and she was always said yes. At age 9, Alexandra began to take an interest in ballet as her prominent dance style. Her mom did research on summer intensive programs and found one at The Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia. Alexandra was accepted, “I loved it, I loved ballet. I knew that I wanted to continue to get more serious about that.” She continued her training at The American Ballet Theatre’s Young Dancer Workshop in New York City for two weeks the following year. When she was 11, Alexandra auditioned and was accepted to Tampa’s Next Generation Ballet summer intensive workshop. With Alexandra getting serious about ballet as a career, she was encouraged by her parents to audition to be a trainee. Age eleven at the time, Alexandra knew they didn’t typically take kids until they were around the age she is now, 14. “I did the audition anyway,” she said. A snafu with Next Generation’s server meant Alexandra didn’t receive an email about the results of her audition, leaving her to believe she hadn’t been accepted. When she was told that she had in fact been accepted she said, “I just started jumping up and down! We were on stage because my group had been called up and I literally almost fell off the stage because I was trying to run and get to my parents so fast.” From 2014 to 2015, along with dancing with her competition studio, Alexandra also trained as the youngest dancer to ever be accepted into Next Generation Ballet’s trainee program. At age 12, she auditioned for The School for American Ballet Summer Intensive and got in on a merit scholarship. “I didn’t think that was going to happen, I was so shocked. I found out when I was in math class at school,” she remembered. “This past year I auditioned again and I knew that I wanted to dance for the New York City Ballet. This year was a little bit different because I was now 14 and they could accept [me] to stay year-round in their winter term program, I was old enough to stay in the dorm.” Alexandra went back for the summer intensive again on a merit scholarship. After a class one day during the summer, her dad

kept trying to Facetime her. When she finally got to her room and answered the Facetime call, Alexandra recalled, “My parents and my little brother Colton were holding a sign that said ‘Congratulations.’” They had received a call that morning from SAB inviting Alexandra to the Winter Term program. I asked Alexandra’s mother, Shelli de Roos, what it was like letting her daughter go to New York City to pursue her dream at such a young age. She said with unwavering conviction, “As a mom, it’s the hardest thing to do to let your child go at the age of 14, but I absolutely knew it was the right decision for her. This was the opportunity of a lifetime.” She continued, “Her father and I knew this was her chance.” A ballerina of accomplishment, accepted to study at The School for American Ballet, Alexandra spoke with appreciation, remarking, “My biggest supporters are definitely my parents. I don’t know what I would do without them.” She explained when she went to Next Generation Ballet how her parents would drive her an hour there and back. They had the school arrange a special schedule for her so she was able to attend Next Generation, “They wanted to support me in anything I did, so I definitely wouldn’t be here without them.” Alexandra also cited all her teachers and mentors–the ballet teacher from her first competition studio, Ms. Lorna Rozon, the former artistic director at Next Generation who is now the artistic director at Boston Ballet II, Peter Stark, and Next Generation’s current artistic director Philip Neal as invaluable supporters. About Neal, Alexandra said, “He believed in me. He gave me hard parts and some main roles when I didn’t think I was ready, but he knew I could do them and that meant a lot to me.” Alexandra says she also draws inspiration from watching dancers Maria Kowroski, Tiler Peck, and Sterling Hyltin from New York City Ballet’s company. With an obvious love for dance, I asked Alexandra what specifically about ballet drew her in. “It’s really elegant, I love performing it. I especially love the Balanchine style versus Classical or Vaganova style. It has elements of fast movement, kind of jazzier movements I would say, or movements that push the ballerina a little bit more than the other types of styles. I feel like I move naturally about that style.” She continued, “I get this feeling when I start to dance and I can’t really describe it, but I’ve had it my whole life and I really love it.” Alexandra attends academic school at The Professional Children’s School (PCS) in New York where she soaks in her favorite subjects–English, Writing, History, and Biology. Somewhere between her dance schedule at SAB and academic classes at PCS, Alexandra still finds time for her other hobbies–sketching dancers in her sketchbook, making earrings, and scrapbooking which she learned from her grandmother. The possibilities seem endless for this young dancer. Her sweet spirit, positive disposition, and resilience to perfect her craft will get her wherever she sets her sights and she has them set to the sky. “My main dream is to become a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, that’s what I’ve had in my head for many years.”

Solomon’s Castle: A Visionary’s Legacy Solomon’s Castle is one man’s masterpiece, tucked amongst the orange trees and pastures in Ona, Florida. Howard Solomon, who unfortunately passed away in August of 2016, was a true creative with an imagination overflowing into everything he did. Alane Solomon, Howard’s daughter, reminisced about him. “I got to see him every day in a beautiful setting. It’s like he created this whole kingdom for us.” Luckily for the public, Howard Solomon opened his kingdom to the community for everyone to experience. Born in 1935 in Rochester, New York, Howard Solomon moved to St. Petersburg in 1955. He had a cabinet shop and worked as a boat builder, eventually moving to Freeport in the Bahamas where he lived for 7 years doing interior design for nightclubs, restaurants, and hotels. According to his daughter, he owned several galleries in the Bahamas and Miami, had shows in New York City, and has pieces all over the country and the world. “He moved here in 1970 with the hopes of building a studio and a workshop and a home so that he could be centrally located,” Alane explained. She continued, “Once he bought the property, he realized there wasn’t a lot of room to build out so he started building up and because he’s an artist, some of his artistic flair fell over into the architecture and he decided to build a castle.” The tours started after speaking at the Kiwanis Club through the urging of some local community members that were curious about the newcomer. He explained who he was, brought some sculptures, and explained what he was doing. They asked if they could come out to see the project. To that, he suggested they come out the last Sunday of the month. He forgot what he told them and when they showed up that day, he gave an impromptu tour. The next month on the last Sunday, they came again. For the next 12 years, he gave free tours. Alane spoke about her childhood on the premises saying, “I thought that everybody’s dad made stuff. At that age, I had no clue how talented he was. He was definitely my hero.” This beautiful property boasts the main attraction, his castle. Solomon estimated it to be about 10,000 square-feet with a restaurant called “The Boat in the Moat,” a lighthouse, a replica facade of the Alamo, and more. I took a tour of the castle with a group of other guests eager to see what it held. The silver tiles lining the façade of the castle are actually aluminum printing plates from the local Wauchula newspaper, The Harold Advocate. “The print side is on the inside, so technically it’s a time capsule. You could peel them all off and read old news,” remarked Alane. Another aspect of note is the 90 pieces of stained glass that can be seen in the different buildings on the property–all made by Howard. The approximate 40-minute tour takes visitors through the galleries and home of Howard Solomon, going through the castle, boat, and ending at the lighthouse. Cindy, our tour guide for the day described Solomon as, “The Da Vinci of debris, the Rembrandt of reclamation, the wizard of odds and ends, and the savior of salvage.” When I spoke with her, she explained that she had been with Solomon’s Castle for 8 years saying, “I loved him, I love this place.” Throughout the tour, Cindy showed us stunning pieces of Solomon’s work made from carburetors, gas tanks, oil drums, beer can bottoms, coat hangers and other recycled materials. He made everything from people, creatures–real and imaginary, boats, cars and beyond.

Cindy didn’t just run through the motions, she performed the tour that Solomon himself wrote the script for. It was honestly funny. The jokes were smart, not pretentious, but a sophisticated type of humor that resonated with everyone in the room getting more than just a chuckle or two. I spoke with another visitor on the tour, Linda Dube, who has been to the castle 3 times, saying, “Every time I come, I seem to see something different and I have more of an appreciation for him, for what he’s done.” The sheer volume of subjects that Solomon covered had Linda in amazement saying, “It’s not just cars, it’s not just metal, it’s wood, it’s everything. He fascinates me.” We made our way, jaws gaped in awe of his work throughout the castle. As we exited, Cindy pointed out the Blue Moon Room in the east wing that can be rented which includes a 500 square foot kitchenette, can sleep two, comes with a continental breakfast, and has air conditioning, Dish TV, and high-speed internet. Making our way through the boat, Cindy explained that it was a staggering 65 feet, three-quarters the size of the Santa Maria and was made from recycled wood. Every aspect of the tour, from the castle’s architecture, the boat, his artwork within, and even the humorous descriptions of his pieces given by the tour guide had Howard’s fingerprints. The walkthrough felt like getting a glimpse inside the mind of this artistic genius. Before I left, I stopped by the Boat in the Moat for a bite to eat with Alane. The menu contained a variety of salads, sandwiches, and other hot dishes. I was torn between the Reuben and the chicken pot pie. Everything at the restaurant is homemade according to Alane, adding, “A lot of the recipes were my grandmother’s.” Famous for their desserts, Alane remarked, “People come back for our walnut pie or they come and get a full apple crisp to take home to their family.” I decided on the Reuben with a side of spinach casserole, chips, and a drink. Everything was divine! The restaurant and atmosphere alone are worth a trip. An adventure worth taking whether alone or with your family, you’re bound to come away having gained something–a full stomach from The Boat in the Moat, peace and quiet in an idyllic setting, or an appreciation for the creative legacy that Howard Solomon left his family and the visitors of his timeless castle.
