LOCAL NEWS Winter Haven airport gets two new taxiways

Fate of the Ritz Theatre on July 31

Winter Haven High School Technobots

A $4.6M project was recently completed. City commissioners authorized the money to be spent building two new taxiways so that pilots would not have to use active runways to reach the airport terminal. The city teamed up with the Federal Aviation Admin. And the Florida Dept. of Transportation to complete the project. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on May 21.

Attorney General Pam Bondi filed legal paperwork requesting a judge temporarily close the theatre, remove Stella Heath as executive director, appoint a receiver to take over admin. duties and appoint a team of independent accountants to review the books at the theatre. The Ritz lawyers are seeking a motion to dismiss s a y i n g there are no allegations that Heath committed fraud.

The WHH Technobotics Academy team traveled to Kentucky in late April for the 11th Annual VEX Robotics World Championships. They are the only team from Polk County that qualified for the competition. They finished 86th out of 96 teams in the science category. This is the second year in a row that the team has made it to what the Guinness W o r l d Records staff identify as the largest robotics competition in the world.

Florida Veterinarian of the Year

Chain of Lakes Complex renovation

Jesusadelaida “Jesse” Lopez was charged with multiple counts of unlicensed health care, all third degree felonies. Lopez holds no medical licenses and is not a RN. It was also home to Dr. Compassionate 420, an illegal medical marijuana dispensary. Lopez offered laser hair removal, stem cell joint injections, weight loss, Vampire Lifts (drawing blood from your arm, separating the plasma and injecting it into the face to reduce wrinkles) and the use of a cavitation machine which removed fat from customers. Lopez was released on bail.

Congratulations to Dr. Mitsie Vargas, a Vet for the past 22 years, she has earned FL Veterinarian of the Year at the 89th Annual FL Veterinary Medical Assoc. in April. Dr. Vargas owns Orchid Springs Animal Hospital on Overlook Dr. in Winter Haven where she works with 3 other Vets. Dr. Vargas said this award was very special because she was selected by a committee of her peers. She has set herself apart by incorporating alternative forms of medicine.

The Chain of Lakes Complex will receive a massive renovation and expansion, with construction starting as soon as August, to make space for the Orlando Magic farm team that will play in Lakeland. Inside will be six basketball courts, 12 volleyball courts, a new box office and elevators. The current gymnasium will receive substantial work including a second floor surrounding the courts with enough space for bleachers.

Local kids help paint murals Around 50 Winter Haven summer camp children helped Jacksonville artist, Nicole “Nico” Holderbaum paint three murals around the city. Jill Spangler with the WH Rotary Club and resident Finn Bowen helped pay to bring the artist here. Carlos Sanchez with PPG Paints agreed to donate the paint and sundries for the campers. Nico founded her Kids Mural Project back in 2015 and has visited more that 50 Title I schools in the Jacksonville area.

South Central Park on schedule Renovations to South Central Park are coming right along and the $4.4M project is expected to be completed by September, just one month behind schedule. In the coming months, a trail will connect Central Park to the Grove Roots area so downtown customers can walk across town instead of driving. Construction began Aug. 28, 2017 and now is in phase three of four.

Looking Good Local It’s a simple thing that can make a huge difference. We’re lucky to live in an area with so many independently-owned boutiques. They’re a great place to get a new outfit, new shoes or a new piece of jewelry. It not only makes you feel good, but it’s good for the community. Shopping small helps keep the boutiques in business. That keeps the character in our neighborhoods unique! In turn, people stay employed, money stays local and improves our city. As a bonus, when you shop at a small business, you get to know the owner and that’s a major plus. They can tell you every single thing in the store, what size it is, where it’s from and what other colors it might be offered in. You might pay a little more for something, but if you love it, and you love the feeling when you put it on, it’s totally worth it. We hope you enjoy the looks we’ve we’ve styled from boutiques in Polk County. Thank you to all of them for allowing us to explore and put some looks together! Go out and visit them, I promise that you’ll find your new “favorite.” Model: Nicole Doyle Hair & makeup: Ella Sexson Styled: Amy Sexson, Tara Crutchfield, Ella Sexson Photographs: Amy Sexson

Zahily Fals, M.D. Endocrinology Gessler Clinic Dr. Fals was born in Cuba. This is where she began her path to becoming a top endocrinologist. Her love of medicine started as a child. Dr. Fals moved to the US ten years ago, beginning her residency at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, New York. Dr. Fals worked for three years in internal medicine. Following with a Fellowship in endocrinology for two years at the same hospital. When asked why she chose a career in medicine, Dr. Fals answered very confidently. “My father is a doctor, my mom is a dentist, and my brother is also a doctor. My mom wanted me to be a dentist, but when the time came, I wanted to be a doctor. I like medicine.” She chose endocrinology for a couple of reasons. First because her dad had diabetes, nobody else in the family had it, that was her main motivation. Second, it was the doctors around her that inspired her. “When I was in NY, on rotations, you have people that motivate you. The doctors in endocrinology were amazing.” She was driven by them, even more motivated at the time because it seemed really interesting. “Rotating and seeing the different specialties, the one I liked the most was endocrinology.” Dr. Fals first job was in Kissimmee, she was there almost two years. In October 2017, she started at Gessler. It was evident that Dr. Fals loves working here in Winter Haven. “People are amazing here. They are very nice and respectful, the culture is very respectful towards you. The patients come because they really want help, they listen and they really want to do what you recommend. They follow your advice.” Even though she currently lives in Winter Garden with her husband and two young daughters, she loves coming to her job in Winter Haven and hopes one day to cut that commute down. “Here at Gessler, everyone from the front desk, to here are super nice people, educated and respectful. I’m very happy here, I come into work everyday, very happy. The administration here at Gessler is always making sure you feel good, and that whatever you need, they can provide for you. They are always looking out for you, making sure that everyone is well-attended.”

Many times, the primary care physician is able to care for the patients; however. at some point, they may need extra help. That is when they are referred to Dr. Fals. “There are many patients that keep their disease very well controlled with their primary caregiver. But for the minority of them that aren’t doing well, those are the patients that we want to see and be able to make a change. Patients that suffer from diabetes, thyroid disease, thyroid nodules and adrenal disease.”

What does she love about being an endocrinologist? “With this field, you know a little bit about everything and then of course you specialize in endocrinology. We have a high prevalence of diabetes in this country, obesity, and in this field you’re able to help so many people. You are needed.” According to Dr. Fals, there is a shortage of endocrinologists. “Even here, people have to travel and will have to wait a month to see a specialist.”

Dr. Fals love for her patients was clearly evident. She smiles when she talks about her patients and Gessler. “I’m fortunate that I found Gessler, and I have a really good welcoming and I like my patients. Even when I came back from maternity leave, everybody was asking how I was, how was my daughter, it’s a really nice place to be.”

Ajay Mangal, M.D. Otolaryngology Lake Wales Medical Group Dr. Mangal was born in India and moved to Iowa with his parents at age twelve. “When I was growing up, my cousin was a physician. I always looked up to him, so I decided that’s what I wanted to be when I grew up. I pursued it.” He’s an Otolaryngologist (also known as an Ear, Nose & Throat doctor) specializing in disorders of the head and neck ranging from hearing loss to cancer. As a matter of fact, he’s so amazing with his patients that the City of Lake Wales declared a day in March as “AJ Mangal” Day for his dedication to his patients. Dr. Mangal began his education at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine Medical School. From there, he attended University Hospital University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Internship. Finally completing at the same University Hospital - University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Residency in Otolaryngology. “I made the decision to be an otolaryngologist in med school. I went through all of the different specialties, and I wanted to do surgery because I’m pretty good with my hands. I enjoy it because I do things procedural as opposed to just seeing patients. I’ve tried other specialties but I like this one the best because there’s a wide variety of things to do. I enjoy working in the head and neck region.” He says that by the end of his third year he knew he wanted to be an ENT doctor.

“I intend to work for another 15-20 years and will always try to increase the scope of what I do, adding more procedures.” Always learning, always making the lives of his patients better. “I’m very happy to be here, I really like it here.” Member of the medical staff of Lake Wales Medical Center. Lake Wales Medical Center is owned in part by physicians. Lake Wales Medical Group 423 Linden Lane | Suite 1600 Lake Wales, FL 33853 (863) 676-1960 www.lakewalesmedicalgroup.com

Dr. Mangal came to Lake Wales in October of 2011. He and his wife wanted to move to a warmer climate. After visiting for a job, they didn’t want to leave. “We really liked it so we stayed.” To Dr. Mangal, this isn’t work. “I like all aspects of my specialty. It doesn’t feel like a job or work to me. I’m absolutely excited about coming in and helping people and helping patients resolve problems. I like the small hospital environment, all of the physicians really get together well. I like the patient population, they’re very nice, laid back, relaxed and I can chat with them like a friend I love that environment.” He went on to say that when you work in a small town environment, you are able to get to know the patients. The hospital has a smaller staff, so you’re working with others very closely. Building relationships with patients and his colleagues adds to the love of what he does.

William Cooper, D.O. Gessler Clinic

Originally from Port Huron, Michigan Cooper moved to Darien, Connecticut as a kid. After finishing high school, he enlisted in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman for 6 years and completed his undergraduate degree while attending 11 different colleges. Following his commitment in the Navy, he was accepted at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine and was awarded a full scholarship from the U.S. Army. He went on to complete his orthopedic surgery residency at William Beaumont Army Medical Center and Texas Tech University in El Paso, Texas. Dr. Cooper then fulfilled his obligations with the Army while assigned at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. While in the Army, Dr. Cooper was deployed to Afghanistan attached to a small forward surgical team supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. He was also privileged to serve as an orthopedic surgery consultant to The White House from 2011-2015. At age 16, he decided medicine was the path for him. His father had a brain aneurysm that ruptured and left him in the hospital for a period of time. “I found myself not liking doctors at all. They seemed like they were detached from the family and the patient and I didn’t like it. They would come and go and never make eye contact with my mom or myself. Doctors would only talk in passing, it would be brief. I decided that I was going to go into medicine to do better.”

Dr. Cooper is married with two little boys, evident because of the sweet drawings they’ve left for him after a trip to his office one day. Dr. Cooper is also an avid Spartan athlete. With several medals hanging on his wall, you can tell he takes not only the health of his patients quite seriously, but also his own. Running a Spartan race is not easy, consisting of uneven terrain mixed with an obstacle course. He also loves to bike and do crossfit. “That’s one of the reasons why I love living in Florida, I can get out and stay active.”

Dr. Cooper knew he wanted to be a surgeon. “I knew I was going to do something surgical. While in med school, I fine-tuned my interest and decided what I wanted to do.” Being an Orthopedic Surgeon is a highly complicated and technical field. What does he love about it? “When people come back and say that they’re better off because of what I did for them. The reward is making someone feel better.”

William Cooper, D.O. 635 First St. N Winter Haven, FL 33881 www.gesslerclinic.com 863-294-0670

Always wanting to come back to Florida, he made his way back about two years ago. “This was the best opportunity for me, professionally, socially, and it’s a great central location.” When asked what he loves about working in Winter Haven, he was quick to point out that the population of people is excellent. “I get a broad range of age groups, a variety of issues that I see and I’m happy with the patient population. This (Gessler) is a good work environment, too. It’s nice for me to have access to other specialties and primary care physicians in the same building.” You can find Dr. Cooper on the “Weekly Check Up” on 102.5FM on The Bone in Tampa, on Saturdays from 10-11am at least once a month. Dr. Cooper talks about a variety of topics dealing with orthopedic surgery and you can even call in with your questions.

Sherif I. Ibrahim, MD Nephrologist Bond Clinic Dr. Sherif Ibrahim is triple board certified in Nephrology, Geriatrics and Internal Medicine. He has brought his passion for health and years of experience to Bond Clinic this past spring. Dr. Ibrahim was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, and attended Cairo University Medical School. He then moved to the states where he originally landed in California before pursuing internal medicine at the University of Arkansas. After his residency, he stayed in Little Rock for a fellowship in geriatric medicine. Dr. Ibrahim then became a practicing internist in Arkansas. His specialization in internal medicine equipped him with the knowledge to treat people with various diseases across the board. “When I was a teenager, I used to visit kidney dialysis patients as a volunteer. It made me upset to see people suffer, so I wanted to be a tool,” said Dr. Ibrahim. Later, he took part in a Fellowship in Nephrology and Hypertension at Saint Louis University in Missouri. At that point, he decided his main focus would be Geriatric Nephrology. He studied calcium and bone diseases and concentrated on acute and chronic renal failure.

months or even years and then could experience a heart attack, stroke, vision problem, or kidney damage. Dr. Ibrahim believes this is all too common, and a serious condition that is important to diagnose.

“I had an interest in how the kidney handles and affects the brain, muscles, bones, heart and organs,” said Dr. Ibrahim.

Dr. Ibrahim’s resistant hypertension clinic is set to open in Winter Haven sometime in the second half of 2018.

He recognized that the health of one’s kidneys directly affects the overall health of their body. Dr. Ibrahim knew that by studying and practicing Nephrology, he could change the lives of so many in need. He was inspired by the vast amount of research that was involved with kidneys in general. He saw this as a sign that there was potential to find new ways to prevent diseases and find new treatments for kidney related problems.

He has two sons who, like himself, also enjoy exploring nature and the proximity of Winter Haven to the sea. Dr. Ibrahim’s future plans are to stay in Winter Haven and to open a clinic within Bond Clinic that is based around the treatment of an international problem, resistant hypertension, a condition affecting people who may be on three different medications for high blood pressure, takes a diuretic, and yet their blood pressure is still above what it should be. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, people with resistant hypertension may have no symptoms at all for

Viet Ho, D.D.S., M.S. Prosthodontist

Certified Prosthodontist, Dr. Viet Ho is from Dallas. He attended New York University where he obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. He returned to Texas to achieve his Prosthodontics Certificate and Master of Science Degree at Texas A&M Baylor College of Dentistry. Dr. Ho is an active member of the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP), the Florida Prosthodontics Association (DPA), and American Dental Association (ADA). After college, the beaches and warm weather brought Dr. Ho to Florida, where he acquired his current office. After just a year and a half practicing in Winter Haven, Dr. Ho has become the go-to prosthodontist because of his focus on trust and comprehensive care. The doctor remembers what made him want to go into the dental field. Not only is his older brother a dentist, but the art and handcrafting of the profession interested him. His specialty came into focus later, after spending more time in the industry. “I fell in love with making an impact for people,” he said, noting that prosthodontists generally handle the more involved and comprehensive cases than a general dentist.

Looking toward the future of his practice, Dr. Ho would like to add another associate to further expand the practice. He would also like to incorporate his lab experience by installing an in-house lab and incorporating in-house technicians. According to the doctor, that would allow him to better control and personalize patient treatment.

The difference between his specialty in prosthodontics and general dentistry comes down to the sheer scope of cases Dr. Ho can see. “My training involves doing the whole mouth,” he explained. The process for these more involved cases, Dr. Ho says, begins with a consultation where he assesses the patient’s need and how they got to that point, focusing on prevention of any further issues. “We try to evaluate how we are going to protect what we build before we actually even build it,” he said. Dr. Ho is involved in the whole process until everything has been completed.

Every treatment plan at Dr. Ho’s office is based strictly on patient need and priority. “We build the practice here, based on patient trust. We don’t want to sell anything, we don’t want to push patients for their treatment. Usually when the patient comes in, what I do is an exam, an intraoral photo and put it on the TV really big for the patient, then we explain what their need is, what their priority focus needs to be.”

His specialty and lab training allows him to perform simple procedures like fillings and crowns on a daily basis, to discolored or broken teeth requiring bonding or veneers. Trained in both the technical and technological aspects of laboratory fabrication, Dr. Ho’s office is equipped to handle even the most complex dental prosthetics and restoration of dental aesthetics.

“Patient trust is our central focus at the office,” Dr. Ho said. “Most of our new patients come from our old patients that refer them to us because they trust us and that’s what we want to build on.” Viet Ho, DDS, MS - Advanced Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry 200 Ave K SE #4, Winter Haven, FL 33880 (863) 294-4484 www.drvietho.com

“I like the beach,” he smiled. “That’s why I came here.” When he isn’t perfecting people’s smiles, he is doing something outdoors like fishing, hunting, or spending time with his family.

Kulmeet Kundlas, M.D. Internal Medicine DaVita Medical Group Dr. Kulmeet Kundlas was born in Northern India. He went to medical school in India before taking his entrance exams to study medicine in the United States. After excelling at his entrance exams, he moved to the United States with his wife, who was a U.S. citizen. He applied for his residency and was accepted into a Cornell program at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Kundlas is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has been with DaVita Medical Group since 2014. He admits his own patients to Lake Wales Hospital, Winter Haven Hospital, Heart of Florida Hospital, and two local nursing homes. After a trip to Disney, where the Florida climate was comparable to where he lived in India, the doctor and his wife fell in love with the sunshine state. Deciding that this is where he would like to settle, he began looking for employment. He liked the area and moved to Polk County. Unfortunately, internal problems within the company he was to work for, left Dr. Kundlas without a job when he arrived. He persisted and has been working hard since 1997 to establish his own practice. “Polk County has been my home since then,” he said.

a year outside of the country and one in the country with his family, recently traveling to Antarctica. Looking toward the future, Dr. Kundlas said, “My personal hope is that I’m transitioning to have more and more control over my time and work more with my patients preventing disease.” He would also like to develop programs within his office and the community in which he can contribute to preventing diseases.

The doctor is the proud father of two, both of which were valedictorians and salutatorians in high school and college. “I’ve been blessed with two children, both aspire to be doctors. I couldn’t ask for a better family,” he beamed, adding that he plans to support them in their aspirations. Dr. Kundlas continued, “I’m very blessed to be married to a woman who is the love of my life. She is one of the most beautiful human beings I know.”

DaVita Medical Group 1143 State Road 60 East Lake Wales, FL 33853 (863) 679-8815

Dr. Kundlas remembers why he wanted to go into his specialty. “I always wanted to be a doctor of everybody. That was kind of my dream was to serve people with different medical problems, different diseases. I had a conviction of this when I was in residency, in medical school.”

6800 Cypress Gardens Blvd. Winter Haven, FL 33884 (863) 268-7380

Practicing Internal Medicine, the doctor mainly treats patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart problems. With his own patients, he focuses on changing their lifestyle for established problems and looking to prevent their progression or developing anything else. Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Kundlas loves to exercise, spend time with his family, be involved in his community, and travel. He likes to take one trip

Thurston Comprehensive Dental Center Making oral health a priority and helping to give people dazzling smiles, Dr. Frederick D. Thurston has been an asset to the community of Auburndale since opening his practice in 1980. Currently serving patients with three skilled dentists, joining Dr. Thurston are Dr. Ela Torres- Moore, and Dr. Parker Duke, according to Barbara Scott, the practice manager. Having multiple dentists has allowed the practice to cover a wide array of services according to Scott, remarking, “We can handle dental emergencies, routine and periodontal care, Implants, Dentures, Cosmetics, Invisalign, Botox. With our onsite laboratory same day repairs and relines are also available.” The office is open Monday - Thursday 7:30 - 5:00 and Fridays 8:00 - 3:00. One area that Thurston especially prides themselves on is their adaptability to new and emerging technology in their field. They embrace any changes that will improve the experience and treatment of their patients by upgrading equipment and processes as new technology arises.

What makes Thurston Dental different, in their own words? “Our practice is built on the platform of patient education. We utilize technology to better diagnose, and educate patients on their dental health, which allows them to make informed decisions. Our team is like family to our patients, we take the time to get to know everyone. Our on-site dental laboratory which allows our technicians and dentists to communicate directly also enhances the services our patients receive,” said Barbara.

Scott, who has been with the practice since 1982, has seen these technological advancements first hand, explaining, “As with the rest of the world, Dental Technology has changed considerably. Digital has had probably the largest impact on dentistry, first with digital radiography which is safer for patients, as well as better diagnostic quality. Digital CT scans allow for us to diagnose and treat infection and disease that would have previously gone untreated. Digital impressions are more comfortable for our patients, and easily transfer to be utilized in the fabrication of restorations in our dental laboratory.”

Coming back this fall, the practice will also be having free seminars for, “patients to learn about the benefits of dental implants.” Seminars are planned for September 14, October 19 and November 16. To reserve your seat at one of their seminars Visit our implant site at www.learnaboutdentalimplants.com.

With oral health often overlooked what makes it extraordinarily important to keep up with? “You are right, dental care is often overlooked, however, it is directly connected to a patient’s overall health in many areas. It is the beginning of the digestion process, there is a connection to heart health, oral cancer, self-esteem, and many others, which is why we educate our patients on their personal situation as well as dental health in general. By the time a patient is experiencing pain, there are less options are it is generally costlier. Prevention and early diagnosis is the most cost-effective,” said Scott.

Thurston Dental 308 East Park St. Auburndale, FL 33823 (863) 852-1227 www.drthurston.com

Though dental care is readily available with a selection of practices to choose from, anyone who has ever had a less than satisfying experience knows the impact of a great dental practice. With their ever-expanding technology, the range of services, and customer-centered approach to dentistry, the list of things setting them apart from the fold goes on.

Dr. Gus De Jesus Board Certified Doctor in General and Vascular Surgery Dr. De Jesus was born and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico. “My Dad is a doctor, my older brother’s a doctor, my middle brother is a dentist, it’s kind of like the family business,” Dr. De Jesus had told me jokingly. After doing so well in Biology, medical school was the next logical step. He always did well at school and college was not different. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Puerto Rico Medical School in 2002. Completed General Surgery Training at the University of Puerto Rico in 2008. Completed comprehensive training in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the University of South Florida, Tampa in 2010. Dr. De Jesus has achieved the highest honors in both clinical as well as academic research. The plan was always to move back to Puerto Rico because there are very few specialists on the island and there’s a huge need. “I worked as a vascular surgeon in San Juan for two years, this was during the recession and a peak of crime and social injustices. It wasn’t safe to keep my family there. Looking for a job back in Florida, they arrived in Florida and it was a perfect fit. We moved here in 2012 and never left. This is our home now.” Dr. De Jesus has just moved into a new state-of-the-art facility. “This is where I want to continue building my practice, maybe expand but stay here , grow old here and retire here. This is where I want to stay. I want to give back to the community that has given me so much.” Dr. De Jesus is the only board-certified doctor for general and vascular surgery in Lakeland.

Dr. De Jesus knew he was going to be a surgeon the first time he walked into an operating room. “In my first year of rotation, I stepped into an operating room, I knew that’s what I was going to do for the rest of my life.” He found that he liked the challenge of vascular surgery, and it was very gratifying. At the time, it wasn’t a specialty that was very well developed in the islands. That’s why I chose Tampa. “I can’t tell you how grateful I am that they gave me a chance and trained me.”

Vein & Vascular Experts 5907 Hillside Heights Dr. Lakeland, FL 33812 863-937-3139 www.veinandvascularexperts.com

Being a vascular surgeon feels like a blessing to Dr. De Jesus. “When people come in, with something affecting their quality of life, to be able to take care of them and treat them and then down the road, see them walk better or feel better or enjoy their life more, because of something that not only I did, but my staff did, is an amazing feeling.” He is grateful that he has the ability, along with his staff, to help people enjoy their lives more. They have no plans to move back to Puerto Rico anymore, he and his family love Lakeland. “I like that it’s a small town, family oriented, and I’m impressed with the strong family values that this community has. It’s a very Christian community and that’s very important to us. We love our church and we love Lakeland Christian School. We feel right at home. We lived in Puerto Rico for basically our whole lives, and to come here and feel like this is home, that’s significant to us.”

Haldane Porteous MD, MSc, SCH, FACP Nephrology Gessler Clinic Dr. Porteous is board certified in Nephrology, Internal Medicine, and he is also certified by the American Society of Hypertension as a Clinical Hypertension Specialist. Dr. Porteous completed his nephrology fellowship at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD and he completed his internal medicine residency and internship at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL. He holds a Master’s degree in Patient Safety from the University of Illinois in Chicago. Dr. Porteous attended medical school at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica and is also a fellow in the American College of Physicians. “The journey to get here has been long, but I’m really enjoying what I’m doing now.” Originally from Jamaica, he moved to the US in 2009. He has been at Gessler Clinic since August 2017. He works with patients that have general kidney issues including Acute and Chronic Kidney Disease. “From an early age, I was always intrigued by trying to take care of people, helping them out. I was also kind of sickly as a child, with asthma. I often wondered why I would run from point A to point B and I was having respiratory issues and everyone around me, didn’t. I started reading up about health and that got me interested in the field. From there, I did sciences in high school and medicine after that.”

me pleasure is being able to explain what is going on with patients and having them participate in their care. Leaving them feeling more reassured that there are things we can do to slow the progression. Even though the options aren’t great options, that we can get through it together and that brings me a lot of joy when you see that patient think, ok, it’s not really as bleak as it sounds. I work with them to achieve a better perspective on their health.”

When asked why he chose Nephrology, he talked about an instance in Jamaica that made an impact on him. “We didn’t have a lot of resources in terms of dialysis, to take care of patients. When I was training at the University of West Indies, I encountered my seniors who were doing dialysis with an old technique.” Dr. Porteous explained that the med students weren’t allowed to do the procedure, but they watched. One day a patient came in and he needed help quickly. “He was basically going to die. I said, why not try to do this dialysis technique. I was going off memory. He was going to die if we don’t do anything, so why not try? I did it and the next day the guy was up talking. It was amazing. Even though he died a few months later, he was able to walk out of the hospital that day.” After seeing that he was able to do something like that, he pursued nephrology.

Both and he his wife have parents that retired here in Winter Haven. His wife works for Polk County School Board. They have two girls and love that family can help look after the kids while both parents work. “This is a great place to raise kids. I’ve lived in huge cities, Miami, Baltimore, and I think that, when you’re at a point where you’re raising kids being in an area like this, it works well.”

“It’s great to be at this point, doing dialysis, and helping people with transplants,” he continued.

Dr. Porteous loves helping people and has a passion for what he does. “I’m really, truly blessed because the administration here at Gessler have been really warm and welcoming. They’ve been helping me to establish this practice. Starting a practice from scratch is a huge challenge and they’ve been really supportive in getting me to achieve this goal of mine which is to serve this area by offering all kidney services that are available out there.”

In the world of kidney disease the news is not usually good. There aren’t good options to give patients. “Either tell them their kidneys have failed and they will be on a machine the rest of their life or that they need a transplant. They will be on medications to suppress their immune systems or that they will die. There are no good options. In general, it’s really sad.”

Ruben Perez, M.D. Internal Medicine Heart of Florida Physicians Group Dr. Perez was born and raised in Puerto Rico. That’s where his passion for medicine began. “My father came from a very poor family in Puerto Rico, and I saw first-hand the suffering of many people due to lack of medical care. I wanted to make a difference.” In 1989, Dr. Perez moved to Seattle, Washington. He attended the University of Washington, and obtained a bachelor’s of science in Microbiology. From there, he went to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to attend the University of Pennsylvania for medical school. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Perez moved to Houston, Texas and attended the University of Texas Health Science Center. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine. During this time, he met his soon to be wife. “After completing my residency, I got married, and moved to Florida.” After working at other medical facilities for 18 years and then opening his own practice for a year and a half, Dr. Perez joined the Heart of Florida Physician Group in Davenport, Florida in April 2016. “And I have been with them ever since.” After several years at the Davenport office, Dr. Perez opened his Heart of Florida Physician Group Internal Medicine office in Winter Haven earlier this year and is accepting new patients. His practice focuses on adult and geriatric medicine.

Besides Dr. Perez’s desire to help others, he became interested in medicine because of his love for science and the desire to make a difference in other people’s lives. “I wanted to have the knowledge to cure illnesses, and to relieve suffering,” he explained. Dr. Perez’s specialty is Internal Medicine. This allows him to diagnose and treat a broad range of conditions, encompassing all organ systems of the human body, and therefore it allows him to have the greatest impact on his patient’s health. Dr. Perez has more than 30 years of experience and specializes in caring for adults with a wide range of health concerns, from common illnesses to complex, chronic medical problems. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine. He is well known for treating his patients with an empathy that he credits learning as a child in Puerto Rico. The thing that Dr. Perez loves most about his job is the fact that he has the knowledge to save a life, to cure an illness, or just the opportunity to positively impact someone’s life. Working in Polk County is a bonus. “I like the fact that it is a small town, and a great place to raise a family. I see myself working in Polk County until retirement age.” Dr. Perez is fluent in Spanish. Member of the medical staff at Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center. Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center is owned in part by physicians.

Sow Exotic Plant Nursery Brittany Bandi and Jared Craig met at Mitchell’s Coffee House in Lakeland. Though each from different backgrounds, Jared from Lakeland and Brittany had just come to Lakeland from teaching English in South Korea, a love of plants and gardening brought the pair together. “He had a small greenhouse out back with a small collection of plants and was really into them. We were both really into growing edible plants and creating an edible landscape out here,” Brittany said of their budding relationship. Deciding to dip their toes in the water of making a living doing what they love, Brittany and Jared started selling plants on Etsy. On a February day in 2016, Brittany, who is a freelance web and graphic designer was working on a rather dull project. Jared walked into the room and mentioned how cool it would be if they had a website that they could sell their plants on. “I stopped what I was doing and I just started our website right then,” she said. Fittingly, on Earth Day during the spring of 2016, Sow Exotic was born, starting with only 25 varieties in their glass greenhouse built by Jared. Today, Sow Exotic is a 2-acre nursery and biointensive food forest with over 300 varieties, 200 of which are on their website, of rare fruiting plants, tropical fruit trees, culinary and medicinal herbs, fresh seasonal fruit, and exotic house plants. Brittany handles the website and computer side of things, with Jared working with the production and research. They both work on maintenance, which up until they hired people recently to help with, they were the only ones doing. The Sow Exotic owners source seeds from all over the world. “We want to bring herbs from everywhere and have them all in one place and make them available for everybody,” Brittany said. Other than being planted from seed, they also use grafted or air layered methods, as well as buying some plants from a wholesale distributor.

havenmagazines.com

“It is really important for us to be completely natural in our techniques,” said Brittany, explaining that they do not use any chemical fertilizers and are completely GMO-free. They even ship orders out in 100% biodegradable coconut fiber planters. “It feels right. At the root of it, it feels better to use things that are natural and from the earth,” she added. In an effort to further the education aspect of what they do, Brittany and Jared created a platform in which they could donate plants to schools, called Giving Gardens. “Every purchase that is made through our website, we take a percentage of that and put that into our Giving Gardens Fund. When schools approach us and are looking for donations to get their garden started, we have plants that we specifically choose, to donate to them.” Schools that are interested can contact them and apply online. “We donate plants all over the country, but we really like to donate plants that are geographically specific or important historically. In Florida, we donate the Seminole Pumpkin which is a Florida native squash and we donate the Florida Cranberry Hibiscus which is a naturalized crop from settlement times.” Brittany and Jared have another project that is a nonprofit, called The Florida Cranberry Alliance which specializes in educating people about the hibiscus. Since Sow Exotic specializes in growing medicinal and culinary herbs along with their other plants, I asked Brittany a favorite herb of hers for recipes or remedies. She recommended lemongrass for both uses, explaining that it is a tropical perennial grass that has a soothing and cooling effect on the body, and is frequently used in southeast Asian cuisine. “I like to do an herbal tea blend of lemongrass, tulsi, turmeric, and cardamom,” she said. This tea is great for colds and congestion and Sow Exotic has all the ingredients for it. Brittany took us on a tour of the property. Greenery everywhere, plants both foreign and domestic, an outdoor shower, a seasonal vegetable garden, a glass greenhouse, two adorable cats – it was a magnificent jungle wonderland, right here in Central 40

Florida. Jared’s son, George, who just turned 8, even accompanied us for part of the tour. When we got to the building they ship orders out of he said, “I kinda help. I weigh it and put the stickers on.” Oh, and his favorite plant? A cactus. When we spoke, Brittany was hard at work building a new website for Sow Exotic. Apart from that, visions of the future promise a bloom for the nursery. They plan to expand their edible landscaping services and their line of gardening supplies including the same natural soil blends and conditioners, fertilizers and pest repellents that they use. “My goal with Sow Exotic is that it works,” she said. “That we can get out there and share all of these plants that we’re growing, with a larger audience.” The green thumb couple is also in the works of converting an old school bus into a mobile plant nursery. “It’s going to have a really strong digital element to it too. When you go in, you can scan your phone over one of the plants and it will tell you everything about it.” She plans to utilize her digital background to build an accompanying phone app. “We’ve been able to meet so many interesting people online and in person that love the plants that we’re growing because of the background they have with it,” Brittany explained. They often hear stories of people that grew up with certain plants and are glad to find them locally. She told one story of someone who grew up climbing a Jama tree to eat the fruit where they were from. Finding Sow Exotic gave them the opportunity to share that experience and that connection with their kids and grandkids. “Where I’d like to see it go is having more experiences like that,” she said. “Traveling to those countries and meeting people and learning directly about those native plants in their environment. That would be cool.” Sow Exotic www.sowexotic.com Instagram @sowexotic Facebook @sowexotic

Chalk & Chances Project Investigates the Lasting Impact Teachers Have on Students’Lives Chalk & Chances began as a research project driven by a powerful question: What difference do teachers really make in the lives of their students? After Florida Southern College professor, Dr. Julie Hasson, interviewed hundreds of people from ages 18 to 80, she knew that she had to share the stories she collected with other educators. So, that research project grew into a website, www.chalkandchances. com. It seems that everyone has a story about a teacher who made an impact, and shared stories help us celebrate and elevate the work of teachers. The National Education Association estimates that 50 percent of teachers will leave the profession in the havenmagazines.com

next five years, and the number of teachers entering the profession is dwindling. It has never been more important to highlight the impact teachers make. Julie has always been a teacher. After playing school as a child, she spent fifteen years as an early childhood and elementary school teacher. Over the next ten years as an assistant principal and principal, she saw herself as a teacher of teachers. She loved to see the educators in her building stretch and grow. Now that Julie is a professor in the School of Education at her alma mater, Florida Southern College, her focus is on teaching graduate students 42

to go out and answer their own powerful questions through qualitative research methods. Julie collected stories about teacher impact by showing up at places like craft fairs, farmers markets and park benches with a sign that reads, “Let’s chat about a teacher you remember.” She learned to bring tissues because the personal stories people share are touching and emotional. Julie describes Chalk and Chances as a passion project and a love letter to teachers everywhere.

Michael LuBeck releases Dragonfly There is a new solo acoustic artist in town. Michael LuBecke (LuBeck) is a well-diverse man when it comes to music and his new album, Dragonfly shows off his talent. As a child, LuBeck grew up in Bristol, Tennessee, a city rich in musical heritage. The legacy of the 1927 Bristol Sessions has named it the birthplace of country music. In the 1960s, when he was 6-yearsold, LuBeck’s father took him to the Purple Sphere in Chicago. He watched from the side as his dad and two uncles played in their band, The Experiment. “I thought to myself geez, I could make money doing this,” said LuBeck. Growing up in the coal mining district, he was introduced to Appalachian-style country. It was unrehearsed, very authentic and mountainesque. “As a kid, our entertainment was sitting on the porch after dinner and listening to my grandparents play this old timey music,” said LuBeck, “It was magical.” His grandmother is still his biggest inspiration when it comes to songwriting and music. LuBeck had access to every musical instrument growing up. He started off with the drums, and by high school he was playing the trumpet and French horn. Today, he plays the guitar, bass, drums and any other instrument you can think of. “I’m pretty grounded as far as most instruments go,” said LuBeck, “I know the familiarity and how they all work and intertwine.” He has always liked progressive music, such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes and U.K. When metal became a fad, he listened to progressive metal, such as Queensryche and Dream Theater. “I always enjoyed the more technical aspect of music than the

simplicity,” said LuBeck. While at the San Diego Recruit Training Command and Naval Training Center, LuBeck was invited to play drums for the Navy Drum and Bugle Corp. in 1978, he was able to march in the Rose Bowl Parade, play at San Diego Charger football games and San Diego Clipper basketball games. “I couldn’t read the music but I was able to duplicate all the cadences,” said LuBeck, “I did that for 6 months.” By 1980, he was a tour guide on the USS Constitution, an old 1812 vessel located in Boston, Massachusetts at the Charleston Navy Yard. LuBeck moved to Winter Haven six years ago from Chicago, where he lived for 20 years. He played his music and toured all over Chicagoland for 10 years. “My mother was from Winter Haven and I had been coming down 2-3 times a year to see her,” said LuBeck, “I brought my [soon-to-be] wife down here to meet my mom. [she] was very enthusiastic about Florida.” LuBeck married his long-time manager, Anastasia Zivic in October of 2012, after living in Florida for only a week. “We flew back home and got married in front of our friends and family up north and then flew back [to Florida],” said Zivic. LuBeck’s many talents aren’t limited to song writing and creating music. He takes original songs by famous artists and translates them on his acoustic guitar. Depending on what venue you’re at or what the crowd demographic is, you can hear anything from Backstreet Boys to Pink Floyd, Queensryche to Johnny Cash and Foo Fighters to LuBeck originals. “He is an incredibly talented individual,” said Zivic, “he is definitely a musician’s musician.”

LuBeck’s new self-released album, Dragonfly is full of original music, almost retrospective. “I always like to challenge my playing ability,” said LuBeck. This album will showcase three new original tracks by him and two tracks of unreleased material from a progressive band that he was apart of in the 90’s called Hyper Tribe. “Smile” is a song on this album that brings a lot of meaning to LuBeck. “[It’s] a song about lost love,” said LuBeck. Another album favorite is a gospel song called “Show Me the Way” which feature seven other voices from throughout Polk County to create the chorus. “It features keyboards from Greg WolfmanSchleitwiler, a gentleman that [LuBeck] was in a band with for 12 years up north,” said Zivic, “Greg is a classically trained pianist who is influenced by Rick Wakeman.” The CD launch party is scheduled for July 1st at Tanner’s Lakeside in Winter Haven from 3-7 pm. “We have a wonderful band opening for us called Spirit and the Cosmic Heart,” said LuBeck. Fans can also purchase merchandise at the event or online at www.lubecklive.com. If you can’t make it to the CD launch party on the 1st, maybe you can make it to their encore CD launch party on July 2nd at Molly Mccue’s in Lakeland. Whether it’s singing Appalachian style country, singing in a band or singing solo, Michael LuBecke is a man of many talents. “I don’t just casually release songs, I really take my time and develop them,” said LuBeck. His ambition and talents have been said to have added value to the world of music. “He is a world class musician,” said Zivic. FB @ LuBeck

Pizza Connection

German Town, Ohio is where the Pizza Connection’s craving-inducing pizza recipe has its origins. From Ohio, Earl E. Hatcher took the recipe to Virginia. Eventually, Hatcher joined his brother-in-law, Jerry Burns,in Central Florida to help with his pizzeria called Jerry’s Pizza, what is J-Burns today, though now under different ownership. In 1986, Hatcher started his own pizza store, the Pizza Connection. A few years and location changes later, Jake Rutledge bought the Pizza Connection. Jake came from Indiana and brought his family: son Jeff, daughter-in-law Mala, and grandson Cole, who was only three at the time. A few years later, in 1994, the store was sold to Jeff and Mala, the current owners, and son Cole is now the general manager. After a fire in 1997, the Pizza Connection made its final move to downtown Auburndale. The atmosphere at the Pizza Connection is a nostalgic sort of mom and pop eatery with the sweet, cozy smell of dough baking in the ovens. “It’s very family oriented,” Mala said.

havenmagazines.com

“Over the years we’ve watched kids that were babies and now they’ve got their own families. We’ve gotten to know a lot of people as customers coming in.” One of the walls of the pizza shop is covered with plaques and photos of little leagues and area sports teams thanking the Pizza Connection for their sponsorship and support. The atmosphere is community.

also has an assortment of subs, wings, and salads, as well as spaghetti and lasagna dinners. The family recently added a Caesar salad to the menu and has now made the option for iceberg or romaine lettuce available on their tossed and chef salads. Speaking of salads, what’s a pizza place without good ranch dressing? Their house-made ranch is such a hit that they make four to five batches per week, with each batch yielding about six gallons. Now the real question: Why does their ranch dressing matter? If you know the answer to that question, you might be a millennial. At least, that was our conclusion. This millennial enjoys pizza dipped in ranch, but an office poll and an inquisitive text to my parents revealed that it’s mainly a younger generational thing. I have no other evidence to back this up. My point is, it’s delicious.

A booming business for the family operation, Cole estimated the Pizza Connection sells between 2500 and 3000 pizzas per week, with Fridays and Saturdays being their busiest time. Other than their signature small squares and distinctly Ohio flavor (which was tested and approved by a native Ohioan that happened to accompany me), Mala said their thin crust and consistency are what keeps people coming back.

Though Cole prefers his pizza with a cold glass of Pepsi, the Pizza Connection offers Cheerwine, which is a guest favorite, along with their Royal cookies comprised of chocolate chip, macadamia nut, and coconut.

Though pepperoni pizzas are their main seller, customers can request different toppings. Everything from sausage and mushrooms to anchovies and dill pickles. The Pizza Connection

50

How do you eat leftover pizza? Cold – if you’re a psychopath. But, if you’re looking for the best way to reheat it, Pizza Connection’s general manager had some expert advice. Place your leftover pizza on the radiant heat of a hot grill, don’t put a lid over it and watch it so it doesn’t burn. This is a sure-fire way to have crispy, leftover pizza that’s almost as good as the night before. Whether you want to dine in, pick it up, or have it delivered, Pizza Connection is a Polk County favorite that is perfect for any pizza cravings. This locally owned and operated family pizza shop has stood the test of time. “Keeping our loyal customers happy,” That’s all Mala wants for the future of Pizza Connection. I keep hearing these ads on 97 Country for Wild Greg’s Saloon in Lakeland. “Come experience the Mechanical Bull and Country Line Dance!” Even though I’ve never been to this particular venue, when it comes to Mechanical Bulls and me, it’s not my first rodeo. I’m totally down for a little do-si-do every now and then. My favorite song is “The Perfect Country Western Song” and I love the Highway Men. I like new Country too. You can call me old fashioned or whatever it is because I am totally a sucker for all things Country. I was born out west in Colorado and grew up in Pittsburgh but the crisp air and rocky mountain high definitely stayed in my blood. When I was about 21, I saw the movie Urban Cowboy three times in a row. I then marched straight to the Goodwill and found me a pair of pre-worn-in suede cowboy boots, just like “Sissy.” Then I set out to find me a Cowboy. Even though they’re worn to the ground, I still have those boots. As far as the Cowboy goes… I had to travel far and wide and finally found one on a modeling photo shoot. I am the proud owner of my very own legitimate “Bud” Cowboy named Nando. We do everything together like “Bud and Sissy” in the movie. However... every now and then, it’s fun to leave your Cowboy on the farm for a girl’s night out in the Wild, Wild West or Polk County. For this special outing, I decided that I should trade in my Justin’s for a new/old pair, I set out to the thrift stores in town to find my friend Meghan Young and a couple pairs of boots and some statement looks so that when we trot into this “Saloon”- if there’s any sort of a showdown, we’ll be the faster draw. Now… stayin’ on the bull for more than 8 seconds, that’s another battle. Last night, I hung out with a couple of real Wrangler wearing, bull riding cowboys and they gave me a tip... “Stay off your pockets.” So, I have hope and at least I’ll look the part on and off the bull. Giddy Up!

1. JUST DIVE IN! DIG IN! I grew up going on archaeological digs with my mom and I remember how excited she would get, covered in dirt sifting away with her trowel uncovering artifacts. For me thrifting is the same way. You can’t be afraid to get dirty and really sort through the racks to find the gems. 2. KNOW WHAT TYPE OF LOOK YOU ARE GOING FOR: I will usually base this on the event or activity that I need my garments and accessories for. (Yes! I said need!) ex: Vintage Garden Party, Airboating, Western, 80’s, Minimalistic, Pan Am Stewardess-ish, All American 4th of July Party, Drinking Champagne in Paris with Sebastien, Prom, Girls Night Out or A New Everyday Look. 3. KNOW YOUR COLORS AND MATERIALS: Colors and patterns are very distinct especially in thrift stores. I love when the stores organize the tops and bottoms by color. I jump right toward the little black dresses, emerald green tops, long floral or polka dot skirts and natural leather shoes. I like cotton and can’t stand polyester. Lately, I have found myself almost exclusively buying anything mustard yellow, glittery and any white leather pumps that are my size. 4. FIT: Fit and size vary based on pretty much any combination in the “World of Fashion.” Era, brand, fabric, factory made, homemade and what country it was made in. USA!!! I love finding vintage clothing made in the USA. Back to FIT… Yes, I went to school for fashion so, I actually took classes about this. You can always ask Suri or Google. Just type in the brand name and details and see what comes up OR if you are adventurous, TRY IT ON before taking it home and washing and sanitizing. For me I can pretty much just look at a piece and tell if it will fit Nando or myself.

I wrangled both my and Meghan’s complete looks for approx. $20 each: At the end of the day, Feelin’ like Daisy Duke when you walk into a Country Saloon…. Priceless.

5. KNOW STAIN REMOVAL AND HOW TO SANITIZE: Yes, I took a class on that too at Kent State University but, Nando is better at it than me for some unknown reason so… I usually leave it up to him. We do love LYSOL for leather shoes, FELS NAPTHA BARS, SCRUB BRUSHES and BLEACH baby!

Mine: Leather Cowboy Boots $2.50 (Meals on Wheels) Leather Vintage top $12 (Lake Country Chic Resale Boutique) Vintage 501’s $4 (Women’s Resource) Red Cowboy Hat $ Free Sample (Henry Garcia/ BULLHIDE) Red Beaded Rosary $1.50 (Saint Matthews Thrift Shop- Regenerations) Bracelet $0.50 (Red Geranium)

6. HAVE A GREAT TAILOR OR SEWING MACHINE IN YOUR BACK POCKET: It is always great to have someone or yourself that can take in or out vintage waistlines and hems.

Meg:

7. SET A TIME LIMIT: I usually go thrifting for “Just 5 Minutes.” One hour or all afternoon depending on how lost I get in the stores.

Red Bandanna $0.25 (Salvation Army) Denim Mini Skirt $3.50 (Saint Matthews Thrift Shop - Regenerations) Leather Justin Cowboy Boots $5 (Meals on Wheels) Lace Camisole $1.50 (Goodwill) Silver Western Collar Points $1.25 (Regenerations) Western Bolo Tie $2.50 (Regenerations) Western Pearl Snap Shirt $3.50 (Goodwill)

8. SET A BUDGET: For fun, Give yourself a challenge of $20 for an entire outfit. It’s easy to do. Tell yourself, unless you love it you won’t pay more than “blank amount” for it, Go with a friend like Jordy whose pockets are bottomless or steal your husband/cowboy’s wallet (like I did yesterday) . 9. HAVE FUN! I always find thrift shopping cathartic. I really enjoy it and it is a stress reducer for me. I like the unknown of what I might or might not find. P.S. SHOP TILL YOU DROP or THE BULL DROPS YOU! Xo Sally DC

WORDS Bailey Hill

Greg Littleton Greg Littleton was born in Winter Haven and grew up in Auburndale. His story isn’t one about the implant that comes to Central Florida for good weather, or about the person that moves somewhere new and ends up coming back home to Polk County. His parents each moved here as teens, with their families, and never left. He knew from day one that he would follow in their footsteps. From his high school diploma at Auburndale High School to working as President and CEO of Citizens Bank and Trust, Greg has always called Central Florida home.

Corporately, Citizens Bank and Trust takes the responsibility to give back and to show support with dollars. Even more importantly, the bank represents a good citizen through service. They are volunteers and leaders throughout the county. Relationships are a huge part of why he is so appreciative of the banking industry in general. “While taking deposits and making loans might not seem particularly noble, it makes me proud to think about how many home purchases, first cars, adoptions, college educations and on and on that our bank has been able to assist with,” said Greg.

“Auburndale and the surrounding area was a great place to grow up and I always thought it would be a great place to raise a family,” said Greg. Family is at the top of his priorities, and he feels blessed to have his parents, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins and church family all together in one area. The fact that this is home is his favorite thing about living here now. He wanted his own children to enjoy and experience what has shaped him.

When he’s not running from office to office around the county, Greg enjoys spending time with his wife Julie and two daughters, Currie Ann and Anna Beth. They love being outdoors either at the beach, on the lake, or in their backyard grilling and eating together. One little known fact about Greg is that he has been on two cross-country trips onboard a motorcycle. Riding motorcycles with a group of close friends is a hobby of his, though he claims his wife would tell you that buying the accessories for them is a close second.

“I love so many things about Central Florida that it’s difficult to narrow them down to my favorite,” said Greg. “I love the natural resources of Polk County. I love the chain of lakes, orange groves, pasture lands, and so many undisturbed natural areas that are scattered around our county.”

Greg has and will continue to serve the community in Polk County and to enjoy all of things he loves about our area.

Greg went to Polk State College where he received an Associate of Arts degree in 1987. He went on to get his bachelor’s degree from Freed-Hardeman University and pursued a graduate degree from the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University. He has a passion for education and he believes in the power it has to change lives. He serves as the immediate past chairman and remains on the board for both Polk Vision and Polk State College.

“Polk County is home for me and literally the only place I have ever called home. I am thankful for everything and everyone that makes it such a special place!” Greg said. Citizens Bank has been around for nearly a century and is still owned by the family of founder Latt Maxcy. Maxcy’s grandchildren own Citizens Bank and Trust and give their full support to the bank’s mission of giving back to the community. This rich history and dedication to Polk County sets the bank apart from the rest.

“I am so proud to be associated with Polk State College because they exist to make education accessible to anyone with the desire to attend,” said Greg. Being of service to others, both corporately and personally, is extremely important to Greg. He believes that like his parents who helped him get his start, there is an obligation for him to help others. Personally, he has served as chairman of the Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce, the Lake Wales Chamber of Commerce and the East Polk Committee of 100. He was also a member of the Lake Wales Arts Council board and the Polk Museum of Art Board. Currently, he is the chairman of the Winter Haven Economic Council and the Heart of Florida Hospital.

WORDS Tara Crutchfield

Polk County Special Olympics SUP Invitational For the 3rd year running, the Special Olympics of Polk County is hosting the Polk SUP (stand up paddleboarding) Invitational on July 14th.

This year’s event will be held at Lake Silver, with opening ceremonies beginning at 9 am. There will be an LED torch carried by one of the athletes to the stadium at Lake Silver, according to Rickert.

Speaking with a coach for the Special Olympics and owner of Paddleboard Winter Haven, a paddleboarding company offering tours, rentals and sales, Kami Rickert, this invitational is a way for the athletes to compete outside of the state competitions. That means a lot of fun and great practice.

“The athletes are set up into racing categories based age and ability,” she explained. After each race, there will be a ribbon event, awarding first, second, and third place winners.

Rickert, who has been a coach for three seasons, took over Paddleboard Winter Haven in 2016 from another coach, Audrey Mettlow. “When she started Paddleboard Winter Haven, she had also gotten involved with the Special Olympics and actually started the team,” said Rickert about Mettlow.

At the end of the day, Publix provides lunch for all the athletes after a day of fun and competition on the water. “My biggest hope is to draw attention to the event and let people know that there’s not just paddleboarding here, but there’s a Special Olympics team,” said Rickert. “Winter Haven is giving not just that team, but other counties the opportunity to compete against each other during the regular season.”

The state competition is in August and is an invitation-only event. By creating this invitational event in July, any county can sign up and bring their team. According to Rickert, “It gives the athletes another avenue to actually compete.” The event draws athletes from counties all over the state including Hernando, Pasco, and Pinellas and averages about 55 athletes.

Be sure to volunteer or otherwise show your support on July 14th. Happy paddle boarding athletes!

The biggest challenge the event facing is finding enough volunteers. The Special Olympics provides all materials they need for the event, the teams bring their own paddleboards, and Publix provides lunch for the athletes, but help on the day of the event is needed.

3rd Annual Polk SUP Invitational July 14, 2018, from 9 am – 2 pm Lake Silver – Martin Luther King Park 199 E. Lake Silver Dr. NE, Winter Haven, FL 33881

Last year, for example, the event was short on time runners and water materials. Thankfully, due to Rickert’s ties to the paddleboarding community through PBWH, they were able to get people to volunteer. “The event does need volunteers to help make it successful again this year as we keep growing it,” she said. Those interested in volunteering can contact Kami Ricket at PBWH by phone at (863) 845-5307 or email her at letspaddleout@gmail.com. Find more information on Facebook @SOFLpolkSUP.
