Hello! Can you believe we’re halfway through 2018 already? This month we celebrate the beautiful Florida weather! From Sally Del Castillo’s cover story of being an “accidental bicyclist” to our profiles on Stewart Mackie, Mikki Lawlor and Mary Beth Jackson, you will be inspired to go outside and be active. Check out our profile on the Slow Roll & Ski Show and find out how you can be involved in this free monthly event. We stop by the newly renovated Fire restaurant in Winter Haven for a talk with the owners and of course, we eat! Make sure you follow us on Facebook, we will be giving out gift cards for Fire all month long! Our cocktail of the month is the traditional Pina Colada, inspired by all of the rain we’ve had in May. Do you like Pina Coladas or being caught in the rain? (yes, it’s been stuck in my head all day…)

Welcoming

We travel to Longboat Key and stay at the Zota Beach Resort. Find out about summer camps taking place at Theatre Winter Haven, a new exhibit at Polk State featuring Kenneth Treister, and how a local man created a surprise side business for himself.

Patients of All Ages

Finally, have a very happy Father’s Day to all of the Dads, father-figures and mentors out there making all of us better people. Check us out online and add your events to our calendar at www.havenmagazines.com. Have a very happy June and see you around town! Amy Sexson Editor asexson@scmginc.com

LOCAL NEWS Auburndale students design logo

First-round draft pick, Derwin James

High School students Conner Grove, Caitlynn McCahill, Ross Persichetti & Jaedyn Smith came up with a new logo for the Polk County School Board with the slogan, Students First. The students had help from teacher Emily Kauwell. Persichetti said they chose the color teal becaus it represents growth, stability and success.

Haines City grad became a first-round draft pick of the San Diego Chargers . James paid homage to those who helped him get to where he’s at by reading a letter written by his mother. James also brought his mom to the draft in Dallas, walking the red-carpet together.

On May 3rd there was a town hall meeting about an amendment to the Florida Constitution that would automatically restore voting rights of felons (other than murderers and some sexual offenders) who had completed sentencing. This is the fourth amendment to make the ballot.

Two charter schools whose applications were previously denied were approved by the Polk County School Board on April 24. Bok Academy North in Lake Wales and Language and Literacy Academy for Learning in Winter Haven were approved. (Formerly Our Children’s of Winter Haven) The new Winter Haven school will open Aug. 13 with a lottery to find out who gets in. The school will be for disabled kids 12 months old through 8th grade.

Cheshire accepted into West Point

Bond Clinic celebrates 70 years

Jeff Spence retires after 35 years

Nicholas Cheshire, 18 of Lakeland, from the Summerlin Academy has been accepted into the U.S. Army Academy at West Point. He is one of five West Point freshman accepted on the rifle team. Summerlin Academy Rifle Team Coach SFC (Ret) Steve Beck said Cheshire is a natural who required very little coaching.

The new Bond Clinic building on First Street, open since January, had a ribbon cutting celebration on May 2. With the new building, the staff have been able to evaluate and treat twice to three times more patients. In honor of their 70th Anniversary, Bond Clinic staff have introduced a new logo with more events planned in the future.

County commissioners unanimously voted to confirm the appointment of Gaye Sharpe as Parks and Natural Resources Director May 1. Sharpe, who has been working in the parks & rec dept. Since 1990, replaces the retiring Jeff Spence who has worked for the county since 1983.

The Polk County School Board passed a resolution on May 15 requesting that the Board of County Commissioners officially place the renewal of the half cent sales tax on the November 2018 ballot. According to PC Half Cent Sales Tax Oversight Committee Chairman Ashley Troutman, if voters do not renew the sales tax, county public schools could subsequently have a $40M budget deficit.

BIKE HAVEN

When’s the last time you heard someone say, I went on the most amazing bike ride this morning and I didn’t even mean to? Well-it’s kinda like how Alice in Wonderland fell down a rabbit hole… We fell down a bike roll… Our bikes started rolling and they just didn’t stop! It was a really surreal experience. So, let me switch back a few gears and explain how this all unfolded.

As if we don’t have enough things to ride already, from horses, to tractors, to rollerblades, I insisted on adding one more thing to the mix. Bikes. ’The Bike Shop’ recently relocated to downtown Winter Haven, and they had an awesome event called the Slow Roll and Ski Show planned. I wanted to be a part of the club. Selfishly, I had these cool fluorescent leggings that needed an excuse to make an appearance along with Nando’s fanny pack. I figured my angle was resurfacing memories of riding his bike in Miami in the 90’s and the fanny pack would do it! (Traditionally with Nando, I have to plant a seed and give him an excuse or reason for why he should do a leisurely event.) Now, growing up here, Nando has really fond memories as a kid riding his Huffy 10 speed to, from and all around downtown WH. He also biked back and forth to modeling castings when he lived in Miami. We actually have probably about 8 bikes at our other location in Upstate NY. Now that I had him invested for nostalgic reasons and because he knew a few friends would be there... The only hurdle was getting him to purchase 2 new bikes from ‘The Bike Shop’ for the event and reintroducing the fanny pack. The fanny pack was easy.(He’s actually been wearing it religiously ever since.) As far as the brand new bike purchases go, it just wasn’t gonna happen because, “The king of not wasting anything,” knew that we have 8 bikes sitting in our shed up north. He said, “Find or borrow bikes or you will be slow rolling in your rollerblades and I will take a horse.” So, with only several hours to spare, we went on a bike hunt; We hit up the Silver Moon drive-in Swap Shop, a couple of garage sales and then we got lucky and found 2 bikes to borrow in our friends garage. One was a 3-speed with the handlebars attached backwards along with a weird back-rest; the other totally didn’t match my style and had a flat tire but, we were closer to the goal, which was to roll…

Twenty bucks at the bike shop to replace the tube, a great N + 1 “Cup of Joe” with a shot of espresso accompanied by a quick waver release signing and we were in! I tossed on the leggings, a pair of poser Puma cycling shoes and some fingerless weight lifting gloves. I owned my look. Off we went to saddle up and join the rest of the “Bike Chain Gang” putting the pedals to the Winter Haven pavement. Weather wise, there was a little sprinkle but it was no problem. All of us were like, “The cool kids are in town.” Chris Sexson has a phrase about Winter Haven “ It’s Kinda Chill” and this was totally chill… A chill, slow and cool way to spend Saturday afternoon. This was a different perspective than the norm; driving, walking or looking down at your phone, we were hands free, so to speak…We had to hold the handlebars of course… Mid roll, we saw the Cypress Gardens Ski Show on Lake Silver and witnessed the famous 12 person pyramid among many other great feats that never fail to give me chills. We took a group photo in front of the whale mural and then made our way, all 65 of us, people of all ages, to the finish line at Grove Roots for a pizza and a craft beer prize. Nando found a wood pallet that we used as a makeshift bike rack. Perf… We just had to keep our eyes on them because don’t forget they were borrowed from friends and we had no bike lock. After consuming a couple a Slanted Ladders we were like 2 slanted ladders, so we threw the bikes in the back of the truck, took off the front tires (to hopefully prevent overnight bike disappearances), put on our helmets and started to walk home…Then we called an Uber. The driver was like, “Um, I think you guys forgot to take your helmets off.” Backpedal... The helmet thing didn’t really happen, but it would have been funny…

21

So, we responsibly got home and said, as soon as we wake up we will pick up the truck and get those bikes back. My dad always says, “When you wake up, get up, when you get up, do something.” And that Sunday morning we sure as heck did! At 7am Nando fed the horses and then we went to pick up the truck. On the way we were reviewing how much fun the Slow Roll had been. That night Bud Strang had been talking about how the bike trail goes all the way to Lake Alfred. I was thinking when will we ever have time to do that? The next thing we knew, we had put the wheels back on the bikes and what started with a quick lap around quiet downtown WH, turned into just going a little bit down the bike trail to…What the heck... Let’s go all the way to Lake Alfred. It’s good exercise. (There is Nando’s justification thing again) We saw beautiful flowers and greenery, smelled all kinds of smells and the amount of wildlife was exciting to see. There were birds, gators, kitty cats and every little insects and lizard in between. There is even a beautifully curated ‘butterfly garden’ with hundreds of butterflies. We deviated off the path from time to time and went into some little developments to look at houses and saw Sunday morning church goers in great spirits wearing beautiful attire. We on the other hand were once again like an over styled ad for Winner Haven apparel, still wearing our same gear and fluorescent leggings from the day before. The whole time, Nando looked like the kid from ‘Titanic’ with his hair blowing saying, “This is so fun, I would have never thought to do this.” We passed over the roads we drive and the lock and canal we boat on.

Going up the ramps was tough. We were pushing it, even in granny gear, and totally hearing in our heads ‘Eye of the Tiger’ from the original ‘Rocky.’ At the top of the ramp we caught our breath and took in the beauty of as far as our eyes could see. It’s crazy how many lakes we have here and how flat the land is in central Florida. You really got the birds eye view of the beauty that surrounds us. On the other side of the overpass we would coast down and pedal backwards zig-zagging as we went down. Nando said one time, “Lets see who can glide the farthest.” He leaned forward trying to win, which I let him. The Lake Alfred diner appeared at the perfect time. It was half way mark and we were starving. Nando and I walked into the place like it had been our intended destination, parked the lockless bikes right where we could see them and enjoyed brunch on the patio.

So going 5 to Lake Alfred and 5 back looks like training wheels compared to that. For someone looking for a nice start to their day or a continuation of the night before (like ours), or something to do on their lunch break, this is a super chill safe experience. Truly a great way to roll. Don’t forget to join in the 3rd Saturday of every month for the free Slow Roll & Ski Show! Also, be sure to stop along the trail and check out that butterfly garden. P.S. We borrowed the bikes from Meghan and Lauren Young. Their mom, Marlene Young was instrumental in getting the bike trail created. Oh yeah, we kept their bikes. We’ve locked them safely in our small studio apartment downtown. We are riding them around town whenever we can. So… Shhh… Don’t tell Meghan bc I think she forgot we have them.

At some point we did our usual ‘FaceTime’ with our BFF Sebastien in France to show him the ‘Tour de Winter Haven’ that he was missing out on.

P.P.S. If we hadn’t gotten the bikes, I can only imagine how things would have gone between me rollerblading, wearing an outfit like Cher from ‘Clueless’ and Nando horseback amongst all the other Slow Rollers. I am so glad we managed to bike it both days!

On our tour we really counted on the mile markers, especially going back because we got tired. The only thing overall that I found tough was positioning myself so that I would clear the concrete posts between the road and the path at every cross street. Possibly residual effects from the Slanted Ladders…

Forget Tour de France…. There is a Bike Haven right in our back yard! xo Sally & Nando DC winnerhaven.com

Now, I’m told that the owner Stew, of ‘The Bike Shop’ will go for like 150 mile morning bike rides.

Crow’ s Nest Artisanal Wares Christopher Amato moved with his family from New Jersey to Winter Haven in 1987 when he was around 13 years old. He graduated from Winter Haven High School, attended Polk State (then Polk Community) College, and earned an Anthropology degree from the University of Central Florida in 1997. He now works with Polk State College in their Instruction Technology Department as the LMS (Learning Management System) Administrator. October will be 8 years with PSC. His last 4 years at PSC in his current role, he split time between office locations. In November, he settled into a permanent office space but needed some atmospheric lighting to combat the fluorescents and bright white walls. While searching for the perfect accent lamp, Amato said, “I couldn’t really find anything that I liked or that I was looking for. So, I figured I was just going to make something.” “I’ve always liked the industrial style especially mixed with the rustic, wood, and steampunk,” he said. And that was the catalyst for his soon-to-be business. He took a trip to Lowes, bought what he thought he needed, and went home to build it. He showed his wife and she was an immediate fan. He put the lamps in his new office space and, in love with his industrial functional statement pieces, coworkers would ask where he bought it. When he told them he made it himself, they’d ask him to make one for them. Chris remembered surreally with a smile, “That’s where it started just two lamps on my desk.” After being told numerous times that he should sell his unique wares, he decided to try his hand in the creative endeavor and filed the paperwork for the business by the end of January.

havenmagazines.com

A few sales, and a few months later in March, he donated one of his lamps for Polk State College’s Relay for Life event. His lamp had the largest amount of tickets, an exciting moment for the new artist (though he wouldn’t call himself that). From there he looked for a few brick and mortar stores to get his foot in the door as a vendor. His products are now sold at Sister’s Junktiques Vintage Market and Scout & Tag. In April, he attended the Moonlight Market at Grove Roots where he sold a few pieces, met a few people, and felt the community’s appreciation for his work. “It’s a little surreal,” he said, “The validation that comes from a complete stranger expressing appreciation [for your work] and then even buying something, it’s like wow!” Before the market, Amato said, “I knew I wanted to make something special for Grove Roots that would stand out during the event.” The owner, Joe, loved the piece and decided to buy it, which according to Amato, “was really cool since he didn’t ask for, or even get to design it!” The name Crow’s Nest has origins as a college nickname that stuck with him, even carrying over to his AOL screen name. Around 10 years ago, he began home brewing wine for friends and family. Not wanting to put it in a plain bottle, he came up with a name and label, dubbing it ‘Crow’s Nest Reserve.’ What’s the Crow’s Nest aesthetic? “I’d define it as functional art using rustic industrial elements. It’s really to be more of a statement piece, something that has a presence in a room like any piece of art would. That being said, I want everything that’s a part of it to be functional.” “One of the first things I wanted to accomplish was

24

having the functional on/off switch with the valve handle. It’s a one-way rotary switch, you just turn the valve handle to the right it will turn on. If you keep turning it, it will turn off,” said Amato, adding, “One of the other things that I wanted to incorporate was a working gauge or a working voltmeter because I’m just very drawn to that old school technology.” His creative process varies, “Some things I actually sketch out and then it’s always cool to see the end product and either how much it resembles the sketch or how much it ended up deviating completely.” Other times he’ll be in the middle of making a piece, step back, and decide to go about it differently. “Then you just kind of know,” he said, “When you get it, it’s like a moment of clarity.” Amato loves the creativity involved in creating his pieces, making things that he likes, that others do as well. He would like to branch into creating other pieces of furniture along with his signature lamps. “My hope is that I can continue to create things that people will enjoy.” Check out his blog to see most of his products or stop in and shop them at Sister’s Junktiques Vintage Market at 31549 US-27, Haines City, or Scout & Tag, 244 N Kentucky Ave, Lakeland. Amato is open to doing custom work as well, so reach out with your idea! Theatre Winter Haven Dance and Theatre Camps If your child likes to sing, dance, or act and you’re looking for summertime activities to get them off the couch, check out Theatre Winter Haven’s Summer Musical Camp Theatre, and brand new this year, Summer Dance Camp. The Theatre Camp is headed up by TWH Education Director, Molly Judy. Judy started with the theatre as a volunteer 26 years ago and came on staff about 20 years ago. The current format for the Theatre Camp started in 2000, according to Judy. Their first camp had only 19 kids and 2 instructors. Over the years, the program has grown, with this year looking to involve about 150 kids. Theatre Camp runs from June 4 - June 21 from 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays, plus the performances on June 22, 23, and 24. “We mount two, pretty much fully realized, children’s productions, in about a three week time,” Judy explained.

performed the final weekend. The group of 150 campers will be divided into 4 groups - 2 younger and 2 older. Each group will have the stage twice to perform for family and friends according to Judy. Judy spoke on the importance of children being involved in the arts. “When you do theatre, which combines all of the art forms, from visual art to dance to music to acting, and you work in a community theatre environment, you work with people of all ages, all socioeconomic standing, different genders - talk about a melting pot!” she said. “They have to learn to work with a wide variety of personalities, they have to learn to let go of their own wants in order for what is best of the show, that’s quite a learning lesson.” Judy added, “Any young person that has an interest in performing, this summer camp is a great way for them to try it out.”

This year’s lineup includes The Wizard of Oz for ages 7-11 and Legally Blonde Jr. for ages 11-17.

The best way to sign your kids up for Theatre Camp is through their website. If you have any questions, call TWH or email Molly Judy at Molly@ TheatreWinterHaven.com.

The first week, the children audition. Each camper will get a role, and because their shows are musicals, they have to determine vocal ranges, speaking voices, and comfort level in front of an audience. After auditions, they start teaching the music and layer in the choreography.

Theatre Winter Haven’s Dance Camp is a new program this year. Courtney Cummings, Director for the camp, remembers how it got started through conversations with Director of Theatre Winter Haven, Dan Chesnicka, about a dance program that would be accessible to kids in the community.

“By the second week, we take the music and the choreography that they’ve learned and we add the staging,” she said.

Cummings put a plan together for what that camp might encompass and Chesnicka got the funding for it. The theatre began with adult dance classes last fall and junior classes for ages 8-18 in the spring, rolling out the brand new dance camp this summer.

Towards the end of the 2nd week, the instructors and production team meet to program the lights and work on scenery and sound. Week three, the kids have dress rehearsals of the production to be

The camp will be from June 25-June 29 and will have a morning session from 9am-12pm for ages 7-11 and

25

an afternoon session from 1pm-4pm for ages 12-18. During the morning session, they will cover ballet, jazz, and musical theatre. In the afternoon session, they will cover ballet, jazz, modern, and musical theatre. The camp will conclude with a performance for all the parents. All kids will receive a t-shirt and snacks during camp. As a teacher at McLaughlin Fine Arts Academy, Cummings expressed that the arts are important year round for kids. “If we keep them engaged in certain ways throughout the summer in the arts because they enjoy them, they might find it’s easier for them to learn when they get back to school. It keeps them motivated,” she said. Whether a child has been dancing for years, or just dipping their toes in, the camp has something for everyone of different experience levels. TWH has also made an effort to make the camp available for families of all income ranges, with the opportunity for a scholarship based on financial need. To find out if you qualify for a scholarship or to sign up for the dance camp, visit their website or email Courtney Cummings at TWHDance@aol.com. Kenneth Treister’ s experiential art on display Polk State College’s Winter Haven Fine Arts Gallery has transformed into an experiential exhibition of changing colors and geometric shapes with the works of world-renowned artist Kenneth Treister, whose paintings of silk evoke emotions and leave lasting impressions on visitors. For Treister, who has spent his life creating as an architect, sculptor, painter, photographer, author, and lecturer, the exhibit is all about the viewers and how they experience the art, he explains. “This is not a show of individual paintings, but rather an exhibit in which the unity of the art creates one expression and attempts to make a strong impression on the viewers,” Treister said. “This isn’t about the artist, the different pieces, or the pieces as a collection of objects. This is about the experience.” The exhibit is open to the public at the Polk State Winter Haven Fine Arts Gallery, 999 Ave. H N.E., Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through July 27.

havenmagazines.com

Instead of individual labels on the paintings, the exhibit includes a single explanation at the front of the gallery to guide its visitors, who are encouraged to first view the paintings from the front center, then move to the left and right to experience changes in colors. “The viewers become dancers,” Treister explained, “and through their movements, they become immersed in the artistic creation.” The inspiration for his exhibit came from nature. “The harmony derived from the continuity of color and light is the beauty we see in beautiful landscapes,” he illustrated. “For example, when you visit Bok Tower Gardens, it’s the totality of the garden – the flowers and the trees, together – that create the beauty you experience.” Treister’s art studio was in Coconut Grove until 2001, when he moved to Winter Haven. He has exhibited his art in galleries and fine art museums around the world, and sculpted Miami

Beach’s world-famous Holocaust Memorial. He received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the American Institute of Architects Miami and the Miami Center for Architecture and Design. He has also authored a dozen books on art and architecture, and the University of Florida keeps an extensive collection of his photography – nearly 75,000 photos he has captured around the world. Photos that Treister captured at the Miami City Ballet between 1989 and 1995 are also on display at the Polk State Winter Haven Fine Arts Gallery. “Polk State College is incredibly honored to have Mr. Treister’s work and thought-provoking exhibit on display,” Polk State President Angela Garcia Falconetti said. “This is a unique opportunity for our students, faculty, staff, and community members to experience the arts and we could not be more thrilled.”

The Fire Restaurant Husband and wife pair, Brett and Ashley Hill have been in the restaurant industry for twenty plus years. Brett started at Disney, where he was a chef for 18 years.

the restaurant a modern, comfortable feel. Natural light beams from the front windows complimented by soft ambient lighting from within. The decor is contemporary with elements both rustic and charming. Polished tree logs made into accent tables, white marble table tops, and a small vase on each table with fresh flowers - delicate touches, each a reflection of the fresh and modern dishes that line the menu.

Five years ago, they opened Fire in Winter Haven. They lived in the area and have always had a love for downtown. When the the opportunity to have a restaurant in the heart of Winter Haven, they jumped at the chance. “It’s been really cool to see how Winter Haven has grown, even in the last five years that we’ve been here,” said Brett.

As for the cuisine that the new decor is mirroring, the chef describes it as New American, though he has an eclectic background having cooked in African, Mediterranean and European style restaurants.

Earlier this year, Fire got a facelift. The restaurant was redesigned from its original pub style to an elegant reflection of their food.

Their lunch menu is comprised of the usual mid-day fair - soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and wings, all made to order with fresh, thoughtful ingredients.

“We’ve always been food-focused and chef driven,” said Brett who is not only the owner, but chef at Fire as well. “We always felt that the ambiance of the restaurant didn’t quite match the quality and the level of food. So, when we had the opportunity to come up with a remodel, we wanted to really align the restaurant’s atmosphere with the quality of food that we put out.”

You can Brunch at Fire on Sundays. Bananas Foster French Toast, Flapjack Stack (homemade buttermilk pancakes. Yum!), and a Brunch Burger complete with Nueske’s bacon, a fried egg, cheese, mayo, and syrup on a brioche roll, are just some of the Fire Sunday Brunch goodness.

For the redesign, the Hills worked with designer Charlie Schiller, out of Tampa. Schiller is responsible for the stunning decor at Grove Roots and The Bike Shop, according to the Hills.

From the dinner menu, we started with their to-die-for bread service & cheese plate. Both were on polished wooden platters that looked like they had just been shaved from the tree. The first tray came with slices of toasted fresh bread, fig jam, a fresh honeycomb, and three different cheeses - Goat & Rosemary, Iberico, and Chimay Vieux. The second was simple and scrumptious, a loaf of fresh, fluffy, warm bread accompanied by spheres of butter topped with Hawaiian black lava sea salt.

After meeting with Schiller to discuss the concept, they closed the restaurant for 11 days, opening the dining room on March 1st, and the bar area, March 16th. “We wanted light, bright, clean,” said Ashley. The space was a pub before Fire, but because of the exorbitant costs of opening a new eatery, they weren’t able to renovate right away.

The main dish was a 10oz filet mignon with roasted garlic butter. The cut of meat was tender, juicy, and perfectly cooked. The garlic butter melted over

it, giving every bite a succulent, savory finish. I feel like I need to take a whole sentence just for what I’m about to say was served with the steak. Brace yourself. Truffled mac and cheese. Yes, that is a side dish that you can order with the filet. And yes, we did finish it. For dessert, a warm apple crisp served under ice cream. “A taste of Autumn,” my dining companion noted. Coming up this summer, Fire is working on “Social Hour.” It is a sophisticated play on “Happy Hour” that will have its own special menu including small plates that you can enjoy while sipping one of their cocktails like a Prickly Pear Mimosa or a Cucumber Martini. Thoughtful ingredients and a unique menu created by Chef Brett himself, echoed by the shining new space keep Winter Havenites coming back to enjoy a comfortable, exceptional meal. According to the Fire owners, “We try to do things a little nicer and put a little more thought and a little more care into what we do.” The Fire Restaurant 325 W Central Ave, Winter Haven, FL 33880 (863) 875-5544 http://thefirerestaurant.com/

them his joy rides because of his severely arthritic hip. Biking was the only time his hip didn’t hurt. He’s since had a double hip replacement and his joy rides have another name. If you’ve ever experienced a “Mikki sighting” as they’re called, you’ve seen a man, maybe shirtless, riding down the street with flowers in his hair, earbuds in, waving, and dancing on his bike. That’s called balliking (ballet and biking), a term he coined from his son, Joe, who goes jiking (juggling and biking).

Michael ‘Mikki’ Lawlor has a photo of John Lennon with this quote hanging in his Pilates studio called “The treehouse” in the Ballet Conservatory Dance Centre. That photo, along with many other sayings, mantras, words of wisdom, notes, and photos line the walls of the treehouse, each with a different story.

Mikki explained, “I’m very uninhibited and I like the idea of laughter. Whether someone might be laughing at me or with me, the definition is still the same– they’re laughing, right?”

As we walked up the steps, Mikki said, “Now, Tara, you’ve entered the vortex of positive energy.” A bright green room, “Center Stage Green” as Mikki explained, the studio is a treehouse in name an essence. With the windows open and a breeze blowing through, Mikki said it feels like you’re in the trees. As a kid, a treehouse is a place to escape the real world and explore a little, and that’s exactly what Mikki wants for his students.

The reason he wears flowers in his hair is to, “remind myself and others that the abundance of beauty is far greater than that of the icky stuff in the world.” “That’s my stage,” said Mikki. People on the street or in the windows of their office or store windows will wave to Mikki as he ballikes down the street like a oneman parade.

Mikki’s family came from Forest Lake, Illinois to Winter Haven in 1981. His mother had founded a dance studio in Illinois and freelanced a bit here, before building the Ballet Conservatory in 1983.

With such exuberance, I had to know what music he listened to while balliking. “I listen to all different types of music from classical, to rhythm and blues, to jazz, to rock and roll. You could name a genre and I probably listen to it,” he said, adding, “The music definitely fires me up, but my energy comes from beyond, from divine sources.”

Around that time, Mikki had changed majors in college to dance with a full ride scholarship. Mikki actually attended five colleges with five different majors (Horticulture, Business Marketing, Music, Dance, and Theatre Design) in nine years.

“People underestimate the power of a wave, or a smile, or a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, a touch. Those things can change the whole course of someone’s life, just something small like that,” he expressed.

In 1993, he picked up a booklet that would send him on the path to become a certified Pilates instructor. The Beauty and the Beast stage at Walt Disney World, where he was set to perform, got rained out, canceling the show. With this spare time, he spotted a paper booklet on the stage manager’s desk. Mikki pulled the booklet out while we talked, and said, “This is what got me into Pilates, this one thing, and I have it still.”

“You can take the stage away from me, but not out of me. The way I teach dance and palates, and the way I present myself through our community is a wonderful taste of love and good karma and energy to take in, because I have received so much in my life, I’m very grateful for all the things I’ve experienced and particularly my personal family, my mom and my dad, and my sister and my brother, and also my wife and three children who are amazing.”

He flipped to the first page that had an endorsement for Pilates by George Balanchine, the father of American ballet. His interest was piqued and when a friend suggested he take classes at the Center for Rehabilitation for Performing Artists, he was hooked, practicing Pilates off and on for 8 years before committing to the training in Lakeland, Miami, and Tampa to become STOTT certified.

It was clear through talking with Mikki just how much his family means to him. He and his wife, Dr. Jann Lawlor, were highschool sweethearts and have been married for 33 years. He described their relationship simply, but powerfully, saying, “We’re one, Jann and I are one person, we really are.”

Mikki came to “plork” (an amalgam of ‘play’ and ‘work’ that he and his wife made up) in his treehouse studio with the support of the Ballet Conservatory about 16 years ago. The word plork is important to Mikki, because he said he’s never had a job in his life. He described this way of looking at things, “Your happiness or your misery depends not on the circumstances, but the disposition that you have.” He came to this realization while building canals in Winter Haven as a summer job when he was a teenager.

He raved about his three boys as well. Sean, his oldest works for the Department of the Interior in Washington D.C., his son Joseph, graduated with his Electrical Engineering degree two years ago from USF and is currently traveling the world. David, the youngest, will be a Junior at the University of North Florida and is working towards his Civil Engineering degree. All three boys attended Jewett School of the Arts, two graduated from Harrison School of the Arts and the other from Haines City IB School.

He discussed what he talks about with new students during a consultation, “There was a Mr. Pilates, and there wasn’t a Mr. or Mrs. Tai Chi or Yoga. Pilates is a scientifically designed method in order to gain more out of your biomechanical locomotion and your neurocontrol.”

The proud dad beamed as he discussed his oldest son, Sean’s upcoming wedding to his fiancé Beiqiang. “That’s the greatest inspiration in my life, right there,” he said about his wife, three boys, and soon to be daughter-in-law Beiqiang.

The demographic of his students ranges from young to old, all walks of life, with the majority of them Baby Boomers. He makes the distinction between calling them clients and students because he feels that they are really there to learn.

He thought of the old folk tale his father would tell him, “The love is so strong, like a bundle of sticks that’s hard to break,” he said.

Enthusiastic about Pilates, Mikki discussed his students, “They’re actually better now, biomechanically than they were 10 years ago. I can’t think of one student that is not better biomechanically and they’re more proprioceptive, they have more coordination.”

What does Mikki Lawlor hope for the future? “That we maintain our ability to build bridges and not walls and just spread a little bit more kindness to each other.” He even summoned a few of the lyrics from John Lennon’s “Imagine” to finish his thought.

He explained what he calls the triangle of health, a combination, each equally important and influential to each other of: biomechanical or physical movement, nutrition, and mental capacity.

Before I left, Mikki gave me a flower he had picked while balliking, an ‘I Love You’ card that he encouraged me to make copies of and hand out to spread the love, as well as a hug because, according to Mikki, “Twelve hugs a day is a balanced mind and a full heart.”

Perhaps what Mikki is most known for, at least around Winter Haven, are his joy rides. He’s been riding around town for about 15 years and started calling havenmagazines.com

The Bike Shop’ s Stewart Mackie

Stewart Mackie grew up 45 minutes Southwest of London in Camberley in Surrey. He started out as a service engineer, working with plumbing and central heating services.

Stew and Meg took over the 30-year old business around September of 2017, a week before Hurricane Irma hit, he remembers. The shop was moved from Cypress Gardens Blvd. to its new location on 3rd St., towards the beginning of December. They shut it down on a Saturday night and with the help of the local cycling community moved the store on Sunday and was open for business on Monday. They later made the addition of N +1 Coffee to the shop as well.

Mackie soon picked up a hobby that would bring him across the pond to settle in Winter Haven, Florida. When he started wakeboarding, “There was no intention for it to be a career, it was just an obsession,” he said. He went on to open a wakeboarding school in England which he joked, “was a terrible idea” because of the weather there.

Biking for Mackie isn’t just his business, it’s an enthusiastic pastime. He recently participated in the state time trial and now holds the state championship for his age group.

“I started off basically to fuel my hobby, to be honest, so I could wakeboard more,” he said.

Mackie owns 6 or 7 bikes of his own, all for different purposes, but especially loves his cyclo-cross bike. He currently bikes 3-4 times a week and is training with Meghan for an upcoming gravel ride in Kansas called the DK200 (Dirty Kanza 200), on June 2nd where they will ride 200 miles of gravel roads. When he isn’t out on the road, he’s training on his indoor trainer, listening to cycling podcasts. He laughed talking about his choice of audio, “I wish I could have said something like death metal, but it’s not.”

The school grew and gained popularity. “I did that for about 15 years. Winters obviously were pretty bleak in England, so I started coming over to the states for personal wakeboarding, then I started bringing people out to come train.” He remembers his first trip in 1994 to Clermont with a friend of his. He even spent a few winters in South Africa where he set up a school called Wake Safari, a combination of sightseeing wildlife and wakeboarding. Mackie said they didn’t mix very well because of the creatures lurking the South African waters like hippos and crocodiles.

When asked about his cycling goals, he preferred not to reveal them. For him, externalizing his goals adds pressure. He did reveal that his competitiveness comes from within and isn’t driven by other people. “I could come last, I don’t care, as long as I’ve won the inner competition,” he said.

Eventually, Mackie ended up back in Florida where he set up the wakeboarding school, Chain of Wakes. “A lot of people would come over [from Europe] in the winter to come get some training in and we got super busy,” he said.

When you visit The Bike Shop to pick up your new set of wheels, you may run into Daisy, one of Stew and Meg’s 4 dogs. Daisy is a Parson Terrier, “She’s like a Jack Russell with a lift kit, so she’s got long legs basically,” Mackie added comically.

He chose to settle in Winter Haven because of the amazing lakes here. “They’re relatively quiet lakes for somewhere that’s actually potentially the water ski capital of the world,” he said. The move wasn’t too difficult for the wakeboarder. “When I first started coming here, everyone was super welcoming and I think that’s kind of what made if feel like a home from home,” said Mackie.

As for The Bike Shop, Stew and Meg are working towards adding more rentals as the bike path becomes more accessible. For now, you can check out their line of cool city bikes or something more technical for the serious rider. Or, just go in and sit at the coffee bar for a cup of delicious, locally roasted Ethos Coffee at N + 1 Coffee.

In 2009, he bought a house here and met his wife, Meghan, shortly afterward. So how did the duo come to acquire the Bike Shop? After a wakeboarding injury, Mackie picked up biking, admittedly becoming a little obsessed, and began riding bikes whenever he could.

The Bike Shop 249 3rd St SW, Winter Haven, FL 33880 (863) 299-9907

When an opportunity came by way of The Bike Shop, it only made sense. “Meg had good experience in retail, I’d had retail experience in the past from back home and we were kind of winding down the wakeboard school here and back home, so it seemed like the next logical step for us,” he said.

Play It Again Sports Sometimes you want to try out a sport or a hobby first before sinking money into something you aren’t sure you’ll like. Baseball, basketball, football, soccer, bikes, exercise equipment, cleats, you name it, they’ve got it both new and used at prices for anyone’s budget.

When visiting Play It Again Sports, you’ll likely get the chance to meet their mascot, a ridiculously adorable chocolate lab pup, aptly named Sport. “Hopefully if he grows up and behaves, (he started obedient school this week) he’ll be able to hang out in the store with us,” she laughed.

Play It Again Sports of Winter Haven is owned by Mary Beth Jackson who took over the store last August. Originally from Indiana, Mary Beth moved to Florida with her mom as a kid. She graduated from Kathleen Senior High School in Lakeland and attended the University of Florida before returning to Polk County.

“The nice thing about Play It Again Sports, is we are about 50/50 – 50 percent new, 50 percent used,” Mary Beth said. They work hard to promote their ‘trade up’ philosophy. According to the owner, “If you use something and now you’re ready to move up to a bigger and better product, you can bring your product in, we’ll buy it and you can use that toward upping your game.”

“I’ve always enjoyed watching sports, I played sports when I was a kid,” she said. Aside from playing softball, Mary Beth was a self-described playground kid, and remembers games of four square, kickball, tetherball, and riding bikes.

If you’re looking to get out on any of the spralling Polk County trails or join in on the Slow Roll & Ski Show, Play It Again Sports just started carrying a line of bikes out of California called Critical Cycles–a sleek line of comfortable bikes for any rider.

“What I like about sports is it is so family oriented. Everybody in the whole family can participate in one form or another,” explained Mary Beth.

Not only can you buy one of these bikes or any of their other used bikes, but you can rent these Critical Cycles. You can find out more information on their Facebook or by dropping in the store.

Though she loved sports as a hobby, it wasn’t always in her sights as a profession, until the opportunity presented itself in the form of Play It Again Sports. She had talked with her husband Mark Jackson, who is the Director for Tourism and Sports Marketing for Polk County, about retiring and trying something new, but didn’t know what direction she wanted to go in. After being in the healthcare field for 25 years, her mother unexpectedly passed away. She took some time off, during which she found her future profession.

We asked Mary Beth what advice she had for a novice trail rider. “Start easy,” she said, “A lot of it has to do with feeling comfortable in your surroundings, so it’s always kind of nice to go out and see where you’re going first.” She mentioned that a simpler, single gear, old school bike is helpful as well, and named Fort Frazier and Circle B as a few of her favorite trails in the area.

Mary Beth who previously worked as a Regional Management employee, managing nursing homes, loved the idea of being able to work in Winter Haven, saying, “To finally get to work in my community as a business owner, it was very exciting.” She said she enjoys getting to work with her son, P.J. as well.

Play It Again Sports 621 Cypress Gardens Blvd, Winter Haven, FL 33880 (863) 294-9696 www.playitagainsportswinterhaven.com Facebook @PlayItAgainSportsWinterHaven

“Sports is a smart business,” said Mary Beth. “Families revolve their whole schedules around sports, they take their vacations around when ball tournaments are.” “We thought it was a good investment. This business has been here for a long time, it just needed a pick-me-up, a breath of fresh air.” Mary Beth explained that the building was dated and that they’ve worked to get the outside in top shape. This summer, they will be working on remodeling the inside as well.

WORDS & PHOTOGRAPH AMY SEXSON

Zota Beach Resort Longboat Key, FL My husband and I decided to take a weekend trip to the beach. It’s one of the best parts about living in central Florida, right? Choose your coast, choose a city & go! We had narrowed it down to Longboat Key on the Gulf side but didn’t know where to stay without going over budget. With a little research and booking.com, we ended up at the beautiful Zota Beach Resort. It was luxurious and because the resort has its own private stretch of beach, it was pretty peaceful. It was the perfect weekend getaway. Opened in June of 2017, Zota is part of the Opal Collection, a premier line of luxury hotels and resorts, located in the best destinations from Bar Harbor, Maine to the southernmost tip of Key West, Florida. The name is inspired by the indigenous name for Sarasota, Zara Zota. Early Spanish explorers thought the white beaches looked like the Sahara, called Zara. Zota means blue waters, so Sahara by the blue waters is Zara Zota eventually becoming Sarasota. Zota Beach Resort consists of 2 towers separated by an infinity edge pool, outside bar and a private beach. The south tower is new construction, with balconies at a 45 degree angle facing the gulf. The north tower was a former Hilton. In July of 2014, the building was taken down to the bones and rebuilt into Zota with views of the pool and 10 rooms facing the gulf. There is a price difference between the 2 towers, however, you get the same amenities. Let’s talk about the rooms! Beautiful! They are peaceful, with walls the color of the ocean. The balcony overlooking the pool and gulf was the best spot to enjoy the glass of bubbly offered to us at check in. Rooms come with a small fridge, coffee maker and large, luxurious bathroom. Bed is super comfy, too.

The private beach is what you would expect, white powdery sand & crystal clear water. Zota offers luxury beds & umbrellas to rent as well as lounge chairs. You can also rent kayaks and paddleboards for the afternoon. The pool area is lined with 120 chairs, a poolside food & drink service, an oversized game of chess, 3 hammocks and a jacuzzi pool that fits 25. They offer 8 “Zen Lounges” to rent poolside that come with a refrigerator and complimentary fruit plate inside, a safe, tv, couches and a ceiling fan to keep you cool. We decided to stay in one for the afternoon and loved it. We ordered pina coladas and snacks and spent the afternoon doing absolutely nothing. I think I fell asleep, I can’t even tell you the last time I took an afternoon nap!

We decided to stay at the hotel for dinner and sat outside, overlooking the pool and gulf. The sun was setting, the breeze was blowing and the food was so delicious. I started with the Handshaken Coconut Daiquiri a drink made of coconut rum, lime, agave with toasted coconut on the rim. Delicious! The perfect tropical drink for a sunset at the beach. For dinner I had the Lobster Ravioli made with sauteed spinach, roasted tomatoes and sherry butter. My husband ordered the Grilled Filet with truffle mashed potatoes, carrots and barolo jus. Both dishes were decadent, and absolutely worth every calorie. We finished with creme brulee decorated with tiny flowers, like everything else that night, it was delicious.

Zota offers 24/7 access to a fitness area with luxury equipment. The view overlooks the pool and gulf, so you can remember that you’re on vacation and that you should stop working out! I’m kidding, but seriously, the view is killer.

I asked Roy when the best time of the year to come out for a quick weekend vacation. “Anytime in the summer, avoid the holidays and spring break. After Easter the rates go down.” With St. Armand’s Circle only a few miles away, it’s definitely easy to make a long weekend of it.

I spoke with Roy Padgett, General Manager at Zota. Roy has been working with the Opal Collection of properties since 2002. He started at the Longboat location about one year before they opened to oversee construction and to get the resort up and moving. I asked Roy why someone should choose Zota. “It’s beautiful! If you want a quiet time at the beach, without a lot of people around, Longboat Key is the place to go. We are a perfect resort to relax at.” Roy walked us around and talked about some of the amenities. The resort is modern, with lots of glass so you have beautiful views everywhere, water features throughout the lobby and pool area and a relaxing turquoise color throughout. Inside, you’ll find a business center, ATM, a facility to rent for parties or wedding receptions and a restaurant called, Viento.

I’m so glad we ended up at Zota. Not only was everything beautiful, but it was the little things that made our stay feel so special. We were offered prosecco at check in, they have fruit water ready for you in the lobby at any moment, they serve freshly baked cookies in the afternoon, and the employees were so kind and made us feel like we were the only people at the resort. We will definitely be going back! 4711 GULF OF MEXICO DRIVE, LONGBOAT KEY, FLORIDA 34228 LOCAL 941.383.2451 RESERVATIONS 855.335.1102 www.zotabeachresort.com
