Welcoming

Patients of ALL Ages

$

ON THE COVER: Created by Ella Sexson. If you happen to get your hands on a copy of our LKLD magazine, you can put the two side by side to create a full rainbow.

Hello and Happy June!

NEW PATIENT SPECIAL

This month’s feature story is in honor of Pride Month. We talk with the local organization, Polk Pride to find out how quarantine affected their community and how they plan to move ahead in 2021. We also visit with Trishelle Michaels, once a highly competitive professional bowler, she is now a mentor and bright light in the Polk County drag scene.

$0 out of pocket expense for insured patients!

Thank you to Marissa Barnes from the City of Winter Haven for meeting with us. We get all the details on the inaugural Winter Haven Juneteenth Celebration. Learn why it was important for the city to get involved and find out how you can be a part of it. For our restaurant, we visit Blue Dog Craft Barbecue. This Texasstyle BBQ has been a staple at the Winter Haven Farmer’s Market. Read all about Max and then go have a taste. I hope you love it as much as we do.

Includes full mouth X-rays (D0210), exam (D0150), and cleaning (D1110)

We also meet up with a local musician, MrENC from Lakeland. Gen Xers will recognize his Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth influences. Find out the inspiration behind his latest music. Our calendar is growing, however, it’s still a good idea to double-check that the event you’re interested in hasn’t been canceled. You can add your own events to our calendar by visiting havenmagazines.com. Keep tagging your IG and FB posts with #kindachill and you might find it printed in the next issue! If I don’t see you around town, have a great month everyone! Happy Father’s Day to all the dads & dad-like people in our lives!

HURRICANE SEASON

DRIVERS NEEDED

SCHOLARSHIP

RESTAURANT CLOSED

In preparation for hurricane season, which begins on June 1, Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing and Polk County Emergency Management have partnered with Publix Super Markets to produce and distribute the “Polk County Public Shelters” maps for 2021. The map is designed to assist both resident and tourist evacuees in finding shelter during an impending storm. The public shelter maps are available at Central Florida’s Visitor Information Center, located at 101 Adventure Court, Davenport, a half mile south of I-4 on Highway 27 and at Publix Super Markets in Polk County. The map contains updated information for 2021. Area lodging facilities and chambers of commerce will also have maps on hand in the event of a storm. For information about emergency preparedness in Polk County, visit www.polk-county.net/em.

Meals on Wheels of Polk County, Inc. urgently needs more full-time Polk County residents to volunteer their time to deliver freshly-cooked meals to homebound people during the late spring and summer months. Potential volunteer drivers can apply online at mealsonwheelspolk.com, call Susan Eldridge at 863-299-1616 or visit Meals on Wheels headquarters any weekday between the hours of 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organization that prepares and delivers nutritious hot meals every weekday for homebound people residing in Winter Haven, Auburndale, Lake Alfred, Dundee, Haines City, Lake Hamilton, Davenport, and parts of Lakeland.

The Lem Geathers Future Change Maker $1000 Scholarship is awarded to a high school senior and Winter Haven resident based on their creative sharing, explanation or interpretation of the significant history of the emancipation of African Americans who had been enslaved in the United States. The award is open to exiting 12th-grade students at a public or private high school. Restricted to Winter Haven residents only. The student and teacher or school administrator must be willing to present the entry at the City of Winter Haven Juneteenth Celebration. More info at winterhavenchamber.com under the blog section.

The Winter Haven Fire Department responded to a fire at Floridino’s Italian Kitchen and their swift response has saved the business. There were no injuries to fire personnel or civilians. Sunday (5-23-21) at approximately 8:48 a.m. a 9-1-1 call was received involving a fire at the Floridino’s Italian Kitchen located at 1919 8th St NW (Hwy 17 at the entrance to Spring Lake Square). As WHFD responders arrived, heavy smoke was seen coming from the front of the building. Preliminarily, it appears that an employee at the business started the daily procedures for opening when there was an incident involving hot oil. Due to the extensive damage to the kitchen and the roof, the restaurant will be closed until further notice.

PCPS HIRING

Join The City of Winter Haven as they celebrate our Nation’s Independence at the Chain of Lakes Stadium, 500 Cletus Allen Dr. in Winter Haven. Next door to the New AdventHealth Fieldhouse, all are invited to enjoy this free fresh air event. Celebrate with live entertainment from B. Haven, food trucks, and much more, followed by the spectacular fireworks presentation. While last year’s celebration was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they are looking forward to bringing back the most attended event with a bang! Join the fun on Saturday, July 3 from 6-9pm.

Betty Dupree’s long ride with Polk County Public Schools has finally come to an end. Dupree dropped off her last passengers, ending a 45-year career as a PCPS bus driver in May. She is retiring … again. Dupree was first hired as a bus driver in 1974, working until 2008 before deciding to retire. It didn’t last long. She returned to the driver’s seat in 2010 and kept going until mid-May. Friends, colleagues, and other well-wishers invited Dupree to a special presentation at Auburndale High, where she was given a plaque, gift basket, and flowers. Fellow bus drivers parked around the school and blared their horns in salute. Congratulations!

The Lady Bolts JROTC drill team from Ridge Community High has captured its first national championship in school history. On April 30, the Lady Bolts competed at the 2021 U.S. Army Cadet Command JROTC National Drill Championships (aka Army Nationals) in Daytona. They won first place in three of four events (color guard, inspection, and platoon regulation), and finished third in the squad exhibition event. That was more than enough to earn the top prize in the Army Nationals unarmed (without rifles) division. They competed against the top drill teams from around the country. Ridge’s JROTC drill team program has consistently performed well at the local level and has multiple state titles to its name.

Polk County Public Schools is recruiting teachers for the 2021-22 school year. They’ve scheduled two virtual job fairs where you can connect with them via text chats or video interviews. The virtual hiring events will take place from noon to 2pm on Wednesday, June 2, and Wednesday, June 16. Register now at polkschoolsfl.com/jobfair. Got questions? Need more details? Please email jobs@polk-fl.net. PCPS also is hiring bus drivers and attendants for the next school year. Polk Pride Together We Rise WORDS Tara Crutchfield

Pride Month is a time to celebrate our LGBT+ friends, family, and neighbors, and love in all its forms. Founder of Polk Pride, Scott Guira, held the first Polk Pride event in 2015. The annual celebration of community diversity and love has grown year over year. In 2020, like many gatherings, Polk Pride was canceled. This year, the festivities will move from June to October.

Megan Hawkes, Ed Torres, and Austin Briggs. Guira believes Pride sets Polk County in line with some of the larger communities that surround us. He says that being open and welcoming changes the perception of what people think of when they think of a smaller city like Lakeland. “I know this community has grown. I know that it is an outstanding place to live, to work, to play. I grew up here, and I’ve seen the community change. I want to make sure that the next generation of young people coming up and people moving this is a place to the area see that this is a place for them, this is a place for everybody,” said Guira. for them, this

Lakeland resident Scott Guira started working with the Lakeland Youth Alliance (LYA) in 2011. This organization serves LGBT+ youth ages 13 to 20. “The organization sets up a safe space environment where LGBT+ kids can come and meet other kids like themselves, build relationships with mentors, and it also gives them an opportunity to ask questions that maybe they don’t have anywhere to ask those questions in a safe environment. They’re able to come and be themselves,” said Guira.

We offer support to parents and family members, and friends who are having trouble accepting or understanding the situation that their family member might be going through with the coming out process. What makes Pride so important is it shows the diversity out in the center of town. We do this in Munn Park so that everybody, whatever their background, can come and be part of Polk Pride. You don’t have to be any of the letters in the acronym. You can be any member of the community that wants to be part of celebrating everybody and their differences and their similarities.”

Though the mission of LYA was to create that safe space for LGBT+ young people, Guira said, “I never really felt like we were providing a safe community.” They could come to LYA and be themselves, but outside of that? “A lot of them didn’t feel like they were able to be themselves and live in the community that we’re in,” he said. Pride was an effort to create a community in Polk County that not only LGBT+ youth but LGBT+ of all ages could feel welcome. Guira is assisted in his efforts by the Polk Pride Board, including Kerri McCoy, Kristine Lally, Patrick Patterson, Dustin Shay, Nick Sotolongo, Gina Bullock,

A CHALLENGING YEAR When Kerri McCoy’s eldest son came out in high school, she began advocating that he and other members of the LGBT+ community be treated equally to everyone else. Three years after joining the PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) of Polk County, she became the chapter’s president. “I feel like everyone should be treated equally. Having a gay son and knowing that the laws don’t treat him like everybody else because he doesn’t fit in that box, that’s what keeps me going,” she said. “I absolutely love the youth. I know they struggle, and I don’t want them to. I want them to know that there are people out there that are just like them, and there are people out there that they can talk to. There are people who have struggled before there is them. I feel like that’s so important that they know they are not alone, [...] that there is somebody always willing to stand beside and always willing somebody stand up for them, and I just happen to be to stand beside one of those people.”

and stand up for them

McCoy expressed that the last year has been challenging for the LGBT+ community. “I think for a while there, some people may have felt very alone,” she said. She received quite a few phone calls from folks eager to know when they could finally meet again for their usual activities and meetings. PFLAG began socially distant outdoor meetings

around six months ago and began meeting indoors with masks in the last two months. LYA has yet to resume meeting in person, according to McCoy. Their first gathering will be an outdoor downtown scavenger hunt scheduled for August. “They are ready to get back together. I think the kids really need this group,” she said. To stay connected and maintain a sense of togetherness, they did hold remote meetings online. “I think they like meeting in-person better,” McCoy said. “I think it’s easier for some of them to come out of their shells and be themselves rather than on a computer screen.” Last year would have marked the sixth Polk Pride. Since its inception in 2015, the series of events that make up Polk Pride has expanded annually. Guira said to put a pause on such a meaningful gathering was disappointing. “But we also knew it was the right thing to do for our community and for everybody that was involved. It was a challenging year, but we’re excited to move forward,” he said. Typically Pride is held in June in honor of Pride Month. This year, the series of events, including Pride for Youth, Pride in Faith, Pride in the Park, and Pride After Dark, have been moved to late September and early October. Though the events are moving to the Fall this year, proclamations are still being sought for June. The LGBT+ community has received two proclamations recognizing June as Pride Month with more on the way from cities around the county. The first proclamation this year was from Haines City on May 20 and the second from The City of Lakeland scheduled for June 7.

TOGETHER WE RISE “With the uncertainty of COVID-19 and the concerns that everybody has, we wanted to allow enough time to put the world in a better situation where we can start having these large gatherings,” said Guira. “It looks like with increased vaccination and things getting a little more back to normal – hopefully, in October, we will be in a much better position than we are in June.” In addition to their caution surrounding the pandemic, the Polk Pride board chose October as it is National Coming Out Month, according to McCoy. National Coming Out Day is celebrated on October 11. “Our goal this year is to bring people back together. To rise

up from a difficult year that we’ve all experienced worldwide and to bring people together from all different backgrounds to celebrate Pride and to celebrate one another and the differences that we all have,” said Guira. Kicking off the festivities is Pride for Youth on September 29 at 6:30 pm. The location is to be determined. McCoy described this Lakeland Youth Alliance Pride party as an occasion for youth ages 13 to 20 to gather and celebrate Pride while participating in fun activities. The next evening, September 30 at 7 pm, will be Pride in Faith – an interfaith celebration of Pride at Beacon Hill Fellowship Church in Lakeland. “Several churches participate from around the Polk County area, and they are all open and affirming churches who welcome the LGBT.” During the service, McCoy said, “We get together and let people know who might be struggling that they don’t belong in a church – that they actually do – and there is a place for them in one of the churches that come and celebrate Pride in Faith.” Pride in the Park is Polk Pride’s largest event, drawing several thousand annually to Munn Park in downtown Lakeland. This year, Pride in the Park will be on Saturday, October 2, from 10 am to 3 pm. The event is family-friendly, appropriate for all ages, and open to the public. That Saturday, Munn Park will be packed with vendors, food offerings, live entertainment, this is an and folks of all ages and backgrounds. opportunity to Headlining Pride in the Park this year is Ginger Minj of RuPaul’s Drag Race fame. bring our Polk Pride After Dark will conclude Polk Pride 2021 that evening at The Parrot at 9 pm. “It is basically a big party to end our whole Pride celebration,” said McCoy of the 21 and up, indoor/outdoor gathering.

“I’m looking forward to hugs. I think we’re all looking forward to hugs,” said Guira of the upcoming Pride celebration. “I think everybody has lacked that physical connection with other people. Celebrating Pride, if you’ve ever been to a Pride before, there is just love everywhere. Everyone is hugging and friendly and taking care of one another and happy to see one another and engaged. This is an opportunity to bring our Polk County LGBT+ family back together, and I foresee there being lots and lots of hugs.” The first year throwing Pride was perhaps most impactful - CONTINUED ON PAGE 26 -

To see thousands of people show up as evidence of that was absolutely the most memorable moment I’ve ever had. And it hits me every single year,” he said.

To support Polk Pride, PFLAG, or the Lakeland Youth Alliance, folks can become a sponsor, volunteer, donate, or join their initiatives. Guira noted they are always looking for volunteers to work with youth, at Pride events, and in other ways. Those interested in volunteering or joining their boards can contact the organizations on their website or through social media.

“Outside of specifically helping the organizations, it’s being an ally,” said Guira. “It’s speaking up when somebody says something that’s not right. It’s reaching out to somebody in need. It’s taking care of one another. Trishelle Michaels Apart from the work they put into performing, drag queens have historically been champions of change for the LGBTQ+ community. Queens like Marsha P. Johnson, the transgender drag queen who was one of the first to resist police during the 1969 Stonewall riots, which are widely regarded as an impetus for the gay rights movement. Yes, drag queens can be campy and quippy and read you to filth while wearing 6-inch heels, but they are also powerful and positive role models for selfexpression and confidence – queens like Trishelle Michaels.

BEHIND THE GLAMOUR “Trishelle Michaels was born through MTV and audience decision,” said Reeves. After hearing the name Trishelle on MTV’s The Real World, he loved how unique it sounded. ‘Michaels’ was voted on by an audience at a bar when Reeves first began performing. He gave them options, the audience voted, and it stuck. “Trishelle is a role model. Trishelle is a promoter. Trishelle is someone that you could come and talk to, that you could message if there are any questions regarding gay life, regarding life in general, […] I think it’s important to make myself available to those people,” Reeves said. And there have been people who have reached out to Trishelle for advice. “Within the past ten years since I’ve been here in Polk County, I’ve really made an effort to be someone that can be looked up to without people feeling that they can’t talk to me.”

Terrance Reeves is a Florida native, born and raised in Central Florida. He moved to the Winter Haven area in 2009, where he lives with his husband of ten years. Reeves, a bowler for 35 years, works in the bowling industry at Kegel LLC in Lake Wales, manufacturing lane machines that clean the lanes. He’s been with them for 16 years. Reeves has been a highly competitive bowler for quite some time and was even on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour in the exempt field from 2008 to 2009. He was among the top 64 bowlers in the PBA at that time. His family built a bowling center in Brandon in the early 80s. Reeves described bowling as a serious side of himself and feels fortunate to work in the industry. “I enjoy going to work every day. Not a lot of people can say that, and I’m just really blessed and fortunate,” he said.

As for Trishelle’s style, Reeves said, “In drag, there are different genres. Just as there are in music, you have different styles of drag. [...] I’m definitely a businesswoman when it comes to my drag. I’m not the high glitz and glam. I’m very straightforward with who I am and what I do with it.” With years spent in the world of competitive bowling, Reeves wasn’t interested in competing when it came to drag. “I try to be myself,” he said.

Another meaningful part of Reeves’s life and work in its own right is his drag queen persona, Trishelle Michaels. When Reeves came out in his early twenties, he wandered into the world of drag. “I never said ‘This is what I want to do,’” said Reeves. Through friends at what was then Club Chambers, and The Male Room in Tampa, Reeves got to work alongside drag queens who were great at what they did. He found a niche, and the rest is history. Reeves began performing as Trishelle Michaels with the help of her drag mother, First Lady of Ybor, Joey Brooks. “She was a big influence. She gave me an opportunity to let me hone in on my skills, gave me tips, and made me better. Without her direction when I first started, we might not be having this conversation,” said Reeves.

Just as there are many genres in the community, so too are there many people and personalities. Drag queens are not a monolith, expressed Reeves. One misconception about the drag community, he said, is that they are all the same. “People might think that I’m flamboyant and all that, but they have to know, for me, that’s just a side of who I am. I’m super chill,” he said. Reeves is also very into sports. “This is where me and the other queens are completely different. They want to go to the movies, and they want to go out to the theme parks, and that is totally not me.” Lip syncing, killer costumes, and comedy are all part of what makes Trishelle Michaels dynamite on stage. “When I’m on the mic, I try to make people laugh. I think that’s one of my attributes and what draws people into me is my personality,” said Reeves. “I’ll be the first one to laugh at myself. I’ll make fun of myself because, at the end of the day of those shows, I’m a man in a dress. I am fortunate enough to be comfortable with myself.”

Reeves is thankful for the queens that paved the way and gave him opportunities throughout his drag career, noting that they “set the pathway for us to be where we are now.” Along with Joey Brooks, Reeves named Crystle Chambers and Kathryn Nevets as inspirations who have helped him with opportunities and guidance.

Preparing for a show is no small feat either. It can take upwards of two or three hours to get ready. Few outside of the drag community know the actual work that goes into getting glammed and ready for a stint in the spotlight. “We’ve got to

“You can’t do it alone,” he said. “You’ve got to listen to people sometimes to make yourself better.”

shave, and we’ve got to put the makeup on, we’ve got to put the outfits together and pack the bags. If we go into a show and we’re asked to do two, three, four songs, that’s an outfit change every time,” said Reeves. Four outfit changes means four wigs, four pairs of shoes, and jewelry for each getup – it’s a lot.

When she’s working, Trishelle finds that she is very focused on producing a show that people enjoy, talk about, and ultimately want to return to. “At the end of the night, when you have a successful show, there’s no other feeling than accomplishment,” Reeves said.

“When we’re changing, we have just a couple of minutes per song to change from one to another. There’s so much work behind the scenes that people don’t see,” he said. “I think it’s important for those younger queens to know that it’s not just putting on makeup. It’s not just putting on a new wig. It’s polishing up what you do and making it better next time.”

ADVICE FOR FUTURE QUEENS Trishelle Michaels has sage advice, not just for drag queens. She strives to be inclusive of everyone. “Gay comes in all different shapes and forms – it’s not just me. […] We’re all different. We all have opportunities to be ourselves. There are a lot of drag kings that don’t get the attention that we get. I think it’s important that we all share the spotlight. [...] That is definitely one of my areas where I try to do great work, to share my spotlight and my opportunities with others in the community, especially on the entertainment side.”

Drag goes beyond a larger-than-life personality and top-tier performance chops; it requires a nose to the grindstone work ethic. “Some people are scared to work, and that’s why you see some people fade out in this business,” Reeves said. “If they don’t have a good work ethic, they’re probably not going to make it.”

According to Reeves, the Polk County drag community is small but mighty, with around fifteen queens heavily involved in performing locally. “Opportunities sometimes aren’t as much because we’re in Polk County, and it is so easy and accessible to get to Orlando or Tampa, but that’s not what I want to do. […] I focus my energy locally. I have no big desire to go to those other markets.”

“We’re presenting something we’re not, but we’re also presenting something that is fun and eclectic and entertaining,” he said. “It’s self-gratifying to get in heels and be like, ‘Okay, it’s time to go to work.’ If I didn’t enjoy it and I didn’t love it, trust me, I wouldn’t do it because there is a lot of work that goes into getting ready.” IN THE SPOTLIGHT A conversation with Reeves and a look through any of Trishelle Michaels’s social media posts reflect an air of gratitude and encouragement. She is an uplifter of others. “That’s one thing I try to project and to bring, whether it’s a smile or a thought to somebody’s day. My drag, I don’t specifically do it for me. I do it for others even though I do enjoy doing it.”

Places like The Parrot, Balmoral, Frescos, and Gary’s Grove host regular or quarterly drag shows. Michaels hosted Polk Pride in 2019 and has been a regular performer at The Parrot in Lakeland since moving here in 2009. Another go-to spot is The American Legion in Winter Haven. Next year will be her fourth annual show there. She also helps their members get dressed up to raise money for their charity efforts.

Reeves says his positive attitude is a reflection of how he was raised. “My family, they weren’t so accepting of the gay side. It was just recently in the past couple of years that my mom and stepdad came to a show,” he said. “They’re very accepting of it now and understand that it’s a sort of work for me, and they see the positive side of it.”

Asked if he had any advice for someone reading this who may want to try drag or is just starting, Reeves answered, “Do it. You’re not learning or creating anything if you’re not making any mistakes.” Like everything else in life, the more one does an activity, the better one becomes at it. “Just do it, give it a shot. What do you have to lose?”

“They definitely raised me right. It was just something new for them. I think that sometimes the straight people that go to these shows – it’s something new for them,” he said. And in many of the areas around Polk County that Trishelle performs shows, the crowd mainly consists of straight people. “If I can bring them to a comfort level to join in on a show, that is probably the biggest highlight for me. [...] I want them to laugh and enjoy entertainment. And that’s really what drag is – entertainment.”

“Just because you do something one time doesn’t mean that it’s going to be the same next time. Maybe some of the brushstrokes aren’t the same. Maybe some of the colors aren’t the same. You’re creating something every time you put yourself together. I think that’s the fun of it.” Follow Trishelle Michaels on Facebook and Instagram to see where she’ll be performing next. She is at The Parrot two times a month and Gary’s Grove and Balmoral quarterly. To book Michaels, for more information, or with any questions, reach out to her through social media.

Trishelle hopes the audience gets to take a break from their lives during her time on stage. Though Trishelle Michaels is an expression of Terrance Reeves, it’s also a break from the day-today minutia. “It’s a break from the regular routine of life. You can just be yourself,” he said.

Blue Dog Craft Barbecue Whether you’ve tried his food or drooled over it on Instagram, if you live in Polk County, you’ve heard the name Blue Dog Craft Barbecue. The man behind the meat, Max Miller was born in Michigan but grew up in Polk County. He worked in retail management for about ten years before setting off to make the best damn barbecue around. “Barbecue came out of left field. It came out of the blue,” Miller said. Max has watched food shows on television for as long as he can remember and followed culinary content online. He came across “barbecue god” Aaron Franklin, owner of Franklin Barbecue in Austin, Texas, and leader in Central Texas barbecue. Like kindling to a grill flame, it sparked something in Miller – he had to cook barbecue. “I remember I instantly called my dad and was like, ‘Let’s cook barbecue.’” His dad, Leroy Miller, was in. With no previous restaurant experience or culinary background, Miller watched videos online and scoured Instagram for inspiration and guidance. “It consumed every bit of my time before we even cooked,” he said. First thing was first – Miller couldn’t make barbecue without a smoker to cook it on. He commissioned his cousin Patrick Miller, owner of All Pro Mechanical and Fabrication for the task. “He and I pieced it together in his garage,” Miller said. It is an offset style smoker with a 500-gallon propane tank, a popular style on the Texas barbecue scene, said Miller. He and his dad got to work grilling, at first feeding friends and family on days off. Miller liked the idea of a barbecue pop-up as he thought it would be easier than cook-to-order, though he’s come to find there’s nothing easier about it. There’s a ton of time involved. He cooked any chance he got for the last year of his retail management job. “It came to the time where if I didn’t leave, I’d probably never take off with it,” he said. He started Blue Dog Craft Barbecue officially in January 2019 with the continued help of friends and family, including his mom and dad, girlfriend, Erin, cousin, Brooke, and friend, Vannia. “We thought the food was good then,” he smiled. “But looking back on old photos – it wasn’t ever bad – but we were honing in and perfecting what we were doing,” he said. Miller used social media as a sort of meat metric. He knew what he liked on Instagram and what he thought was good. He pioneered his own Texas-influenced Blue Dog style by recreating what he saw to fit his taste. - CONTINUED ON PAGE 37 -

Blue Dog’s Texas-style inspiration comes through in his presentation. Mouthwatering barbecue arranged on butcher paper alongside traditional Southern sides. You eat with your eyes first, as they say, and every plate Blue Dog presents is love at first sight, then bite. The staples are the usual smoky suspects – brisket, ribs, pulled pork, sausage, bbq tacos, and the like, accompanied by down-South classics like potato salad, coleslaw, and baked beans. From trimming the meat to seasoning it (mostly with salt and pepper), “It’s a lot of prep,” said Miller. His brisket alone cooks for 16 to 18 hours. Blue Dog Craft Barbecue smokes over oak, the most easily accessible wood in the area. Max and his team even cut, dry, and split it themselves. High-demand has Miller maxing out his grill capacity weekly – a good problem to have, he says. The Blue Dog owner is in the process of building a new grill to double capacity for his expanding brisket fan base. The inceptive and ongoing concept for Blue Dog is as a popup vendor. Cooking out of the Catapult Kitchen Incubator in Lakeland, Miller has popped up there and all over Polk County, showing up at Swan Brewing, the Lakeland Downtown Farmers Curb Market, and Winter Haven Farmers Market, which he attends regularly. “We’ve been farmer’s market-focused,” he said. In addition to markets, Blue Dog offers catering for events large and small. Miller recently purchased a food truck that is being renovated and will be running shortly. Beyond pop-ups and a food truck, the ultimate goal is to one day have a restaurant location. Though he’s not set on where it would be, Miller envisions an outdoor-oriented spot. What’s the best thing about running a budding barbecue biz? “All the people we’ve met along the ride,” Miller said. He’s built a solid customer base of folks who return weekly to get their Blue Dog fix. Many regular customers have become friends. “I just love it.” Blue Dog Craft Barbecue FB @BLUEDOGCRAFTBARBECUE IG @bluedogcraftbarbecue www.bluedogcraftbarbecue.com bluedogbarbecue@gmail.com

Juneteenth Celebration Mark your calendar for the 2021 Juneteenth Celebration in Winter Haven later this month. This free, family-friendly event celebrating African American history and culture will be hosted by the City of Winter Haven at Lake Maude Recreational Park on June 19 from 1 pm to 8 pm. All are welcome – spread the word, says City of Winter Haven Special Event & Marketing Coordinator Marissa Barnes. “Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and just spread out and enjoy the ambiance. It’s going to be so much fun!”

for The City of Winter Haven in October of 2019. Though this is the first year the City is hosting and sponsoring a Juneteenth event, The Historic Pughsville Association (HPA) has celebrated emancipation on May 20, or May Day, for many years. “It’s celebrated throughout Florida as being the day that the emancipation was proclaimed in Tallahassee. That’s when Florida slaves were notified of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended,” explained Barnes.

As set forth by the Juneteenth Celebration Committee, the mission for the event is to “bring appreciation and recognition of African American history by creating an atmosphere of unity through a modern-day celebration of heritage that educates, engages the broader community, and inspires future change-makers.”

With the sentiment, “None of us are free, until all of us are free,” in mind, Barnes proposed a community Juneteenth event in Winter Haven. Barnes spoke to the importance of Juneteenth celebrations and observances in communities around the country. “Most cities across the United States celebrate our country’s freedom on the Fourth of July with a firework display or with a celebration of patriotism, and that’s great. But, for some African Americans, that kind of misses the mark because that wasn’t the day that they were freed,” she said. “I think for a local municipality to acknowledge that history and want to celebrate it and find value in it is a huge thing. Not only are we saying, ‘We see you,’ in that celebration, but we also want to meet you and provide the resources that you need to celebrate who you are. Whether that’s through a race for Special Olympics or a Hispanic Heritage celebration, or the community Menorah lighting – we want to make sure that we are meeting these individuals and celebrating them genuinely and authentically for who they are. [...] I thought that was important for the City of Winter Haven. Not because celebrations for the African American

June 19, also known as Juneteenth or Emancipation Day, marks the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, General Gordon Granger and Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to relay news that the Civil War was over and the enslaved were free. To celebrate the historical significance of Juneteenth, the community is invited to gather for a day of music, food, entertainment, and education. The idea for a Juneteenth Celebration was first pitched in early 2020 by The City of Winter Haven Special Event & Marketing Coordinator. Marissa Barnes was born and raised in Lakeland. community don’t happen, but this is a different way. This is a more collaborative way. This is something that we are investing so much time and resources into as well.”

and Inclusion (OEDI) at Polk State College. “They are phenomenal. They will be providing support for us the day of and have been leading up to,” said Barnes. “Community partners like that have stepped up and said this is the event the community needs, and this is how we can make it happen in a fun and safe way.” Barnes also lauded the generous 2021 Juneteenth Celebration event sponsors, including Tinsley Family Concessions, Inc., Adamson + Co., P.A., Citizens Bank & Trust, Jewett Alumni Association, and The Greater Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce. “All of those factors together have really been pushing this event to be as successful as it’s going to be in June,” she said.

The Historic Pughsville Association did not host a May Day event this year, so Barnes sought the guidance of Patricia Smith-Fields, a member of the HPA. “She has been phenomenal,” said Barnes. “Really coming on board with us to celebrate and push that same message of progress and unity.” Winter Haven City Manager Mike Herr, former Parks, Recreation & Culture Director, Travis Edwards, and current Parks, Recreation & Culture Director, Julie Adams, have been champions of the event as well, said Barnes. She went on to praise the City’s strides towards diversity and inclusivity.

“Our main goal in Parks and Rec is to create a fun and safe environment,” said Barnes. “We wanted that to be exactly what this is. It’s a jazz-filled event because we know that entertainment is at the core of any event.” In addition to jazz, education will be a significant focus of the 2021 Juneteenth Celebration. “We’ll be having speakers throughout the day who will speak to the impact from a past, present, and future perspective.”

“One of the things that I wanted to ensure, because this is an event that will represent so much history and culture, is that there wasn’t just an internal force behind the event; there was also an external force,” said Barnes. “That’s how I decided to create the Juneteenth Celebration Committee – partners within the community who will come in and provide us with some guidance.”

An essential part of the educational focus of this Juneteenth Celebration is The Lem Geathers Future Change Maker Scholarship, sponsored by The Greater Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce. Lemuel “Lem” Geathers was the first African American to be elected to the Winter Haven City Commission in 1975. From 1979-80, while serving on the Commission, Geathers became the first African American Mayor of Winter Haven. “In our education of national history, we also want to recognize local history, and that’s one of the ways we’re going to do that is by sharing his legacy,” said Barnes. “We’ve been so honored to present this

She described the City of Winter Haven’s Juneteenth Celebration Committee as an ‘amazing team’ of ‘highly motivated, innovative, and just do-ers.’ “We’ve gotten lots of encouragement from local educators, local religious entities, business owners,” she said. businesses, according to www.mywinterhaven.com. “This celebration will provide vendors of all categories with the opportunity to expand their customer base while pouring into their own community,” the website goes on to say. Vendors selling food and beverage, clothing, make-up, and more will be on-site that day to connect with the community. “We’ve gotten lots of support from non-profit vendors specifically,” said Barnes. Some such non-profits in attendance will include the Agriculture and Labor Program, Polk County Voters’ League, Positively U, and the Polk County Supervisor of Elections.

“We’re so thrilled to be able to continue his legacy because he did so much for the city, and this seemed like the best and most appropriate way to celebrate him,” said Barnes. The scholarship winner will be honored at the June 19 event.

“I’ve been so lucky to have the commission, and the city manager and staff find the value in this event and really want to make it happen and want to make it a success,” said Barnes. “I don’t know how it could have been done otherwise. What a step forward.”

Attendees can look forward to spoken word performances, dance performances, musicians, and HBCU trivia. Andre Berto will host a completion-based obstacle course for kids ages three to 18.

MrENC Eric Collins is a graphic designer by day, musician by night (and the rest of his free time). Born in St. Petersburg, Collins moved to Lakeland when he was five. Now married with two children, Collins has been here ever since. The MrENC frontman released his latest EP, “We Do Our Own Thing,” earlier this year. The 4-song EP is an ode to growing up in Lakeland and the area’s creative renaissance. We sat down with Collins at The Vanguard Room to talk about early influences, musical evolution, and nostalgic lyrics.

holographic wrapping paper and cut it and fold it into the cassette and write our names on it,” he said. They would print and cut lyrics and put them in the cassettes that they would sell at shows. Denison Marrs did this until they could afford to press CDs. They continued to grow musically and eventually landed a record label and got to tour the nation. The band amicably broke up circa 2004, according to Collins. Following Denison Marrs, Collins and his brother-in-law, Dean Lorenz, wrote and demoed an album that also got a record deal. They were set to go on tour with their band, The Dark Romantics, but the bandmates didn’t want to leave their wives behind. So, Carla learned bass, her sister Amanda, keyboard, and a friend on drums joined the tour. They still look back on it and laugh, said Collins. “They could all play the parts perfectly [to their songs], but they couldn’t play any other songs. […] I thought that was so cool. That’s the most punk thing to me,” he said. The band put out a couple of albums and toured between 2006 and 2009, according to Collins.

“As a kid, my mom raised me on classic rock,” he said. As he grew, the rhythms of Led Zeppelin turned into hip hop and rap in middle school. Influences from artists like Public Enemy have carried over into his “grimey anthems dripping with salty alt-rock garage-y grunge vibes or whatever.” “Their production was a lot of sampling noise and jazz records,” he said of the hip hop group. “That has carried over into my music too because I still like to make noise textures with feedback and distortions.” It wasn’t until high school that he got into more alternative and grunge. Collins talked about meeting his wife, Carla. “She had way better taste in music than I did, so she was introducing me to punk bands, and we were discovering other bands together.”

Craving a creative outlet to make and play music, Collins started MrENC at home. “I started doing a song at a time, releasing it online, and started to grow again,” he said. He worked with New Granada Records out of Tampa to put out a few 7-inches, cassettes, and the first two full-length albums. The early days of MrENC were Collins playing every part and instrument needed to create a song from piano to guitar.

Other influences for MrENC (standing for his initials: Eric N. Collins) include The Smashing Pumpkins – who he connects with, from their lyrics down to guitar tones. The ‘space rock’ subgenre sounds of Failure and Hum inspired Collins, too. He liked the flow of their songs and album arrangements, creating a mood.

Missing the band element, he invited his brother-in-law Dean to play drums with him along with other musicians. Collins appreciated having his friends and other local musicians involved. Lorenz currently plays guitar for MrENC, and he and Collins write songs together. Another contributor to the band is Casey Newton, “awesome bass player” and studio manager for The Vanguard Room. “They’ve always been so kind and honoring to me here,” he said of The Vanguard Room owners.

Collins played trombone in school but found his way musically through his mother’s acoustic guitar. In high school, he started messing around on her guitar more seriously. “My dad went and bought me this guitar chord poster from the mall,” said Collins. “I had it on the back of my door, and I’d sit on my bed, learning how to move my fingers and play chords and writing terrible songs.” FROM GARAGE BAND TO TOURING THE NATION

Collins and Newton worked together on a song for The Vanguard Room’s 2019 Christmas album, “A Lakeland Christmas.” The two became fast friends, and Newton joined MrENC on bass.

Towards the end of high school, he started playing with a few buddies – one played drums, another bass, a friend of a friend playing guitar. “It was all these older teen kids that didn’t know what we were doing,” he laughed. “Literally a garage band.” The band dubbed themselves Denison Marrs. “We would save up money and record locally,” said Collins. They recorded in a building behind Lakeland Square Mall.

Thinking back to the earlier sounds that MrENC put out, playing all the instruments himself, Collins said, “I was missing people, missing their input and really their creativity. When it’s just my mind, I feel like everything starts to be the same for each song.”

“We recorded the tape in his funky little building, and then we made cassettes. We’d go to Walmart and buy

THE EVOLUTION OF MRENC AND HIS ‘GRIMEY ANTHEMS’

“I really wanted to do music that throws back to that but is also still progressing. Lyrically, I want to write about my memories coming up in Lakeland and around Polk County, but then also mix in what I’m seeing other artists doing,” he said.

Like any good artist, Collins has had a musical evolution throughout his career. From the ‘big alternative’ and ‘space rock’ sounds of Denison Marrs in the same vein as The Smashing Pumpkins and Deftones to the ‘darker New York style’ of The Dark Romantics, similar to the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs and Interpol. “I’ve always maintained the alternative vibe, but stylistically I like to try new stuff and try to progress and push myself,” he said.

Back in the day, Collins said, “There was definitely a divide between the adults and the kids. […] We put on shows anywhere we could.” MrENC says the tides have shifted, and he’s observed businesses and venues being more open and supportive of local art and music. “I wanted to write about it. I wanted to mix my nostalgia and reminiscing with what else I’m seeing going on.”

Of his earlier MrENC music, Collins said, “It was a little more artsy and a little more surf, spy guitar […] The tones and the drums were more stripped down.” That stripped-down sound got bigger and bigger as more artists got involved.

The EP’s lyrics, Twisty Treat album art, and music video imagery are an ode to what Collins thinks of when he reflects on his time growing up in Lakeland – he and his friends cutting their own hair and piercing their ears with safety pins, thrifting for clothes at the Salvation Army, going to Twisty Treat after a football game, Silver Moon Drive-In, Southgate Shopping Plaza. All things that are now special to his kids and their generation. “It was me reminiscing about nostalgia, but I didn’t want to lean too heavily on that like a gimmick. I wanted to make sure that I married it with the new generation and what they’re doing, what they’re looking for, what they’re going through and experiencing,” he said.

Collins returned to that big alternative rock vibe on his 2019 EP, “On and On and On,” and his most recent EP, “We Do Our Own Thing.” A friend referred to these songs as ‘grimey anthems,’ he said, because, “They’re so big and noisy and fuzzy in tones. They’re so big and loud.” These recent releases were inspired by the likes of The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, The Breeders, Yuck, Nothing, and Starflyer 59. ‘WE DO OUR OWN THING’ For “We Do Our Own Thing,” Collins wrote songs and lyrics before he started demoing them. He said, “I was more focused on the plan and idea, the theme that I wanted to go with.” Over the last few years, Collins noticed what he called a kind of ‘renaissance’ or ‘rebirth’ on the Polk County art scene. From music to visual artists and everyone in between, “I’ve noticed the way that everyone is trying to collaborate and push each other, and trying so hard to do new stuff,” he said. “That’s how culture is built. All creatives are trying to do something and build something. Then it all finally starts to grow together.”

“We Do Our Own Thing” is an EP in homage to the artists and the art – for Collin’s generation and his daughter’s. He described the last track, “All This Time,” as “a light-hearted love song for music in general,” saying, “It’s brought me so much joy and connection – music has – with people around Florida and the nation. Music has blessed me with so many friends and relationships and experiences and adventures.” You can pick up “We Do Our Own Thing” on 7-inch vinyl at Jesse Carl Vinyl in Lakeland or online. Beyond promoting this latest EP, MrENC is recording three songs for their part of a six-song, split 10-inch with The Night Thief, a band out of Los Angeles, from Lakeland initially. That project is expected to come out in late 2021 or early 2022. Though MrENC won’t be doing any heavy touring anytime soon due to the pandemic, you can catch them for a free show at Rock the Park at Curtis Hixon Park in downtown Tampa on Thursday, June 3 at 6:30 pm. The band is heading to Birmingham, Alabama, to play Furnace Fest in September. Later in the year, Collins says he’s open to the potential of a series of mini-tours to places like Savannah, Asheville, Nashville, and Atlanta.
