LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
POLK COUNTY AND HISTORIC CITY OF FORT MEADE PRESENTS
THE 2017/ 2018 SHOW SEASON
Hello November! This month’s cover feature is about Caloosa Hops. Learn how 3 local families are growing hops & making beer. Although still in the earliest stages, they are continually learning and best of all, they’re just super nice people. I got to visit with Brian and pick hops to use on our cover photo. Thank you so much for taking the time with us. I wish them luck and hope their next harvest is huge! We also feature Martha Santiago, she is running for county commission. Meet Amanda-Jo Nicholson and learn why she loves living and working in Winter Haven. The Flywheelers is a local organization that raises money for local charities. Learn how you can participate. Read about our writer, Tara and her first time trying an oyster as she reviews Gary’s Oyster Bar in Lake Alfred. Finally, we travel to Marathon, FL and visit the Turtle Hospital. A major turtle rehabilitation center where hundreds of turtles are treated each year. Meet Irma, the turtle they found after the hurricane came through. Spoiler alert-all turtles are doing well.

LOCAL NEWS Malone stars in ‘Messenger of Wrath’ Actress Melissa Malone, 33, a native of Winter Haven, has a lead role in the feature film “Messenger of Wrath,” a horror/thriller about a neglected 12-year-old girl, Charlotte Three, who faces masked invaders breaking into her home late one night. While trying to escape, she learns of a far more dangerous threat lurking outside. The independent film will be released Friday, Oct. 27, on Amazon Prime. It premiered Sept. 7 at Bow Tie Cinemas in Red Bank, N.J. Malone, a 2001 graduate of Winter Haven High School, plays the character of Rain, the mother of a child with cerebral palsy. Without the finances to cover medication, Rain and her husband resort to to robbery. When things go downhill, Rain digs in and refuses to give up, but her strong morals often cause tension within the group. “I love Rain’s passion and loyalty,” Malone said. “Even when things get insanely hard, she fights for what she thinks is right. There’s nothing more rewarding than playing a strong female character – flaws and all.”

Taylor Hotel incentives capped
Women of Pughsville honored
Skate Park gets money
The Winter Haven Community Redevelopment Agency moved forward to approve incentives for Taylor Hotel, the boutique courtyard hotel which will be redeveloping three parcels of land at the corner of Central Avenue and 3rd Street SW. In June 2016, the CRA established the use of certain development incentives in CRA redevelopment areas. Eric Labbe, growth and development department manager for the city said according to that resolution, Taylor Hotel LLC was eligible for a Tax Increment Financing Rebate not to exceed 50 percent of the total amount of tax increment revenue received annually by the city and/or CRA, as a “direct result of the project on the properties.” The finished product will bring the Marriott brand to the downtown area, and become a 75room upscale hotel. The current taxable value, prior to development, is $1,180,576. The six-story hotel will be brought back to its original facade, and the Mowery building at the corner of Central Avenue and 3rd Street SW will have its exterior stucco removed, exposing the original red brick, said Labbe. The project will take about 18 months to complete.
Hundreds of people packed into the Chain of Lakes gymnasium Oct. 4 for the first Pughsville Women’s Summit, an event to honor women from the community who have made contributions to Winter Haven. Pughsville is one of Winter Haven’s first ever African American communities, and largely exists in memories because of redevelopment and the sprawl of the city as time marched on. A historic marker was placed in the community a couple of years ago, and though times have changed, everyone from Pughsville remembers what a beautiful community it was. Once a year, Pughsville descendants gather for a reunion, usually held in May, but this summit was specifically to honor women. Officer Carol Bradley, who was honored as the “first and only” African American Winter Haven police officer from Pughsville, says Pughsville was a very tight-knit community.“We helped each other. We were down here on the south side of Winter Haven. The Citrus Fair used to be here. The fair used to be on this side of town.”
The Winter Haven Community Redevelopment Agency approved $330,000 of their budget in October for skate park, which may be supplemented by matching grants. Jesse Skubna, whose children are both competitive skate enthusiasts, told commissioners she believes a “quality park” can be built for that amount of money. “The community as you know, is ready for this park,” she said. One possible site for the park could be on the banks of Lake Silver, as previously discussed by commissioners. Commissioner Pete Chichetto asked City Manager Mike Herr what would be the next step, and Herr said the city has to come up with a plan, and staff would get back with commissioners.
Nora Mayo hosts first event
Shoe kick-off
More than 430 people attended the Greater Winter Haven Area Chamber of Commerce 92nd Annual Banker’s Cup Awards and Annual Meeting at Nora Mayo Hall last Sept. 28. The hall, decorated in fine linen and stunning aerial lighting, enjoyed its first night open in recent years. It was known previously as the Florida Citrus Building and was owned by the Department of Agriculture. Hap Hazelwood, now the former president of the Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce, said, “We are thankful to the City of Winter Haven for their commitment to this fight,” and invited Mayor Steven Hunnicutt to say a few words. The mayor smiled and said, “On behalf of the City of Winter Haven, welcome back to Nora Mayo Hall. We are excited to have this historic asset active again. How appropriate for this celebration of community to be the very first event.” The 92nd Banker’s Cup Citizens of the Year Award is considered Winter Haven’s highest honor as it recognizes a citizen who has made a significant impact/contribution over a number of years or through a single project.
Jensen’s Corner Bar started a shoe drive last year that picks an elementary school in need, and provides each student with a new pair of shoes every Christmas. The program is called “Kicks 4 Kids.” This year, they have picked Garner Elementary. They will be giving away more than 500 pairs of shoes. Permission slips are sent home to parents to sign ahead of time, and any family that wants to opt out may do so. The “kick-off” party was held last Wednesday. Jessie Skubna got the idea, according to Tinia Clark, from the fact that every time her kids would go to skate boarding activities, she noticed a lot did not have decent shoes to wear. To find out how you can help, visit Jessieslive.com or call 863-2989815.

Child care workers arrested Two women accused of berating, taunting and throwing a backpack at an 8-year-old autistic child at Our Children’s Academy in Winter Haven have been arrested in late September after they turned themselves in, police reported. According to a report, Kaderrica Smith and Alexus Henderson were booked into the Polk County Jail, and Henderson, who was charged with child neglect, bonded out. The Winter Haven Police Department released a warrant for the two child care workers after a video was released showing what they did to the child. The child did not require medical attention, police reported. On Sept. 1, the WHPD said it received information about a Snapchat video that had been posted showing 26-year-old Kaderrica Smith of Haines City and (then 19-yearold) Alexus Henderson of Dundee “taunting, aggravating, yelling at and doing a leg sweep on a student at Our Children’s Academy, 330 Avenue C SE, Winter Haven. The 8-year-old boy, who was diagnosed with autism, ADHD, ODD and severe outbursts, is seen and heard in the video crying and hiding underneath a table while Henderson and Smith continue to taunt him.”

Caloosa Hops
There are more breweries in existence now than at any other time in U.S. history. According to the Brewers Association, the U.S. craft beer industry is now a $22 billion industry and Florida is the fastest growing state market. There were 45 craft breweries in Florida in 2011, and as of 2016, there are 195 and counting. Joe Dunham quit his day job at an engineering and construction firm to open Grove Roots craft brewery in downtown Winter Haven around a year ago. The place has been so packed as of lately, that the business recently expanded. Dunham said he has been using 500 pounds of wet hops to brew the good stuff every single month, mostly imported from places like Washington state and beyond where temperatures are cooler and drier. He is hoping that the small group of farmers who just started trying to grow hops commercially in Florida a few years ago will succeed so that he can use more local ingredients. “Everybody is about fresh from Florida, Dunham said. With the surge in craft breweries and the spread of citrus greening wreaking havoc on the Florida citrus industry, scientists at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences received a two-year $158,000 grant to study hops as an alternative crop to grow in Florida in 2015. With scientific signs that it was possible, some of the scientists started speaking at area conferences, sharing the concept of growing hops in the Sunshine State.
19
not be easy growing hops in such a hot, wet climate with plenty of pesky bugs. Some scientists from the University of Florida helped them pick which variety to plant and how to fertilize the soil. At first they planted around four varieties with another 20 varieties of hops on trial around four acres of land around Lake Wales.
Around a year ago two Polk County men who live in the Lake Wales area invited a third friend from the Ft. Myers area to attend the 2016 Florida Hops Consortium. “I ran my hare-brained scheme by Tommy and he liked it,” said Caloosa Hop Company co-owner Kevin Updike.
The hops that seemed to grow best are a variety called Cascade hops, a somewhat pungent, bitter, citrusysmelling crop.
Kevin, his elementary school buddy Brian Marston and their friend of 10 years Tom Kirschner all liked what they learned at the conference. On the way home they immediately started looking at where they could start growing Florida hops.
Beyond the challenges of growing hops much further south than where they grow best, the trio had to start figuring out how to market their new product.
Kevin’s family has been in the citrus industry since 1942 and Brian has lots of experience in the citrus and nursery industries. Brian said the concept of growing hops was not about getting out of the citrus industry, it was more about diversifying and growing different things. Kevin said he was reading reports of shortages of hops given all of the craft breweries opening. In January 2017, the trio registered the business name Caloosa Hop Company and then they got to work planting.
Their first harvest in March of 2017 only net around 30 pounds of hops, enough to make around four kegs. A brewery in Sarasota called JDub’s Brewing purchased a batch and threw a “Commander Wet Hopped IPA” party in June. A month later Grove Roots owner Joe Dunham brewed up a batch of Caloosa Fresh Hop IPA. The trio has also had partnerships with Crooked Thumb Brewery in Safety Harbor, Swamp Head Brewery in Gainesville, Swan Brewing in Lakeland and Wop’s Hops in Sanford.

bottom with the roots left intact. Two other adults take the bines and feed them into a machine that separates the hops cones from the bines. Their children are in charge of making sure no leaves or stems got bunched in with the final product. Without use of the machine it would have taken the three families a week to harvest a half acre instead of a single day. After the hops are all separated, they are placed in a homemade dryer before being sold to brewers. It’s a fairly small set up spread out on two farms, one in Babson Park and one near Bok Tower Gardens.
Dunham said. “Brian’s wife Sarah got the last glass of the second keg.” Each batch of hops takes a few months so there are multiple harvests per year. On the day before Hurricane Irma blew through the county in September, Brian, Kevin, Tommy, and their wives and children all gathered at Brian’s farm in Babson Park to harvest their second crop of hops. This time the local farmers got around 150 pounds of hops.
Brian said what they are doing now is comparable to a hobby but they are trying to turn it into a business some day. Next up for the trio and their loved ones is chopping down another two acres of citrus to plant more hops. “We are learning, not earning but we are hopeful,” Kevin said.
Hops are quirky-looking bines not vines, that can grow up to 25 feet per season. (Vines use tendrils to climb, bines have small, stiff hairs.) They grow upwards with the help from a trellis setup on the farm. Every three months or so, the plants are harvested. Using machetes, the adults cut the bines at the top and

29th Annual Carols in the Park
The holidays are officially upon us! We’re putting away the ghost and ghoul decorations to make room for turkeys, pumpkins, and sweaters–or maybe just a short sleeve shirt made of sweater material, we are in Florida after all. Soon it’ll be time for Santa, candy canes, and Christmas music! Ushering in the December festivities and promoting local business is the 29th Annual Carols in the Park presented by Citizens Bank and Trust which will be held in the Downtown Winter Haven Historic District on December 2nd and 3rd from 10 am to 4 pm. This 2-day annual festival promises a cheery time filled with the creations of local craftsmen, artisans, businesses, and musicians. Main Street Winter Haven and its sponsors make it a point to include local schools in the festivities by giving their students the stage to put on a variety of holiday songs and performances they’ve been practicing. Anita Strang, Executive Director of Main Street Winter Haven says that 700-900 children usually perform over the 2-day event and remarked, “Carols in the Park will be celebrating its 29th year, it has become a holiday tradition for some. We often talk to adults who performed at Carol’s when they were young and now are bringing their children to perform.” Main Street Winter Haven also engages with local schools in an art contest, the winner of which will have their artwork used in the poster for the event. Anita continued, “We hope someone attending the 29th Annual Carols in the Park presented by Citizens Bank and Trust will experience a sense of community filled with holiday spirit. havenmagazines.com

of the community can also visit their website or on Facebook at @ MainStreetWinterHaven for more information on the event.
Aside from the sweet sounds of children singing, the festival has free horse-drawn carriage rides, kids’ activities in the Candy Cane Corner, photos with Santa Claus, a character handing out treats and taking photos with the kids, snow for them to play in, and more. Adults can enjoy the variety of food from local food trucks and vendors and get their Christmas shopping done at any of the 100 plus vendor booths including everything from jewelry to holiday décor and everything in between.
Start a new tradition with your family by joining Main Street Winter Haven with your friends and neighbors to support local schools and businesses at the 29th Annual Carols in the Park! December 2 & 3 10 am - 4 pm Downtown Winter Haven Historic District 263 W Central Avenue, Winter Haven, Florida 33880
Today we are lucky to have the convenience of shopping at major retail shops and online stores. Aside from the nostalgic feeling of Christmas shopping at local shops, that can’t be replicated, shopping local also benefits the community we share. Anita, a proponent supporting local businesses explained, “When someone makes the decision to buy local they are improving our local economy, creating a greater sense of community pride, and many times you receive better customer and personalized service when you buy local.” With handcrafted items being the highlight of the festival, Main Street Winter Haven invites local makers and vendors that would like to be included, to visit their website, mainstreetwh.com. Carols in the Park can be found under the events tab on the site where they can apply online or download the application. Polk Museum of Art Opens “STATUS: fluid/ dynamic” Exhibition Polk Museum of Art opened “STATUS: fluid/ dynamic” the first solo museum show for artist Jason Myers, a multi-disciplinary American artist based in Logansport, Indiana and Zwolle, Netherlands. Myers works in a variety of mediums, and the aim of “STATUS: fluid/ dynamic” is to share the unique approach he takes to create in his studio. This exhibition features work in steel, resin, computer-generated prints and LED video, and takes the form of paintings, sculptures, virtual paintings and installations. Complex, layered and exquisitely executed, this is a selection of works from several series he created over the past 10 years. Jason Myers answers a few questions about this latest work. What is your inspiration behind this exhibition? I consider personal life experiences to be my primary inspiration, but I draw content from culture/history and the society/social issues in our lives. This exhibition was a careful selection of works from several series, created over the past 10 years. Each series challenges certain perceptions of our lives and the answers we settle for, regarding the system within which we live. The aim of this exhibit was to share the unique approach I take to create in the studio. The works range from paintings, sculptures, virtual paintings
and installations, and most include digital media in some way. Most of the work combines the different mixed media to create hybrid mediums.
It was certainly the most difficult, took the most time, and required the most investigation of new tools and technology to create. The piece was a challenge to myself to create a work of art that captured more than a moment of time, but rather a work that was an experience of time itself for the viewer.
All the work starts with the hand in the form of drawing, painting and sculpture before it is scanned and manipulated in the digital format. It is then transferred to canvas and worked physically with many layers of paint and resin.
It addresses the overwhelming and irreversible influence of digital technology on our lives. Within a five-minute duration, the “self” or subject is overwhelmed by and then overcomes the struggle, as the piece transitions from light to dark and back again. The handwriting symbolizes the visible noise or digital infiltration of our souls, lifestyles and the ways we live and communicate with one another.
Most importantly, my subject is “ourselves.” My works are a reflection and metaphor for all of us. Since the beginning of art, with the cave paintings at Lascaux, artists have emulated themselves. As humans, we recognize and relate to our own reflections better than anything. A common element we all understand and a narcissistic view of the center of our universe.
What does it mean to you as an artist to have an exhibition here at the Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College? This is my first solo exhibition in a significant museum. It is a very important element for this body of work specifically. Most importantly, the museum allows the opportunity to share the work in its purest form, which lacks the selections being based on sales strategy or other thematic reasons of galleries or art fairs. My goal has always been to exhibit these series in a space that allows the body of work to communicate with each other visually, in its intended format.
What story does the exhibition tell? I don’t think of my exhibition as comments, answers, or telling a story in a general sense. I do believe that it is a means of eliciting questions from the viewer about the world around us. It does reflect my anxiety about life through my process, which continually evolves, by transitioning through a variety materials and media. What is your favorite piece in the exhibition? Why? I would consider “Visible Noise” to be my favorite pieces for many reasons.
What role does a museum exhibition
27
play in advancing your work? Part of my job as an artist is sharing the work with others. This exhibit has given me the opportunity to show the work in a space that presents the art in a designated higher learning environment. Museum exhibitions allow greater access to a larger audience and a wider cross section of the general public. Why should people come see this exhibition? What do you want them to take away from it? I hope that people come and experience the exhibition to see something new and different than they may have ever experienced before. Being not only new methods, mediums, working processes and subject matter, but also art that questions things they may have taken the given answers for granted. I hope the audience is moved enough to evoke questions of their own, about their own lives, through a visual experience. The exhibition will be running through December 10. Admission to the museum is free daily. Hours are Tuesdays – Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sundays, 1-5 p.m. Visit www.polkmuseumofart.com for more information. 800 E Palmetto St. Lakeland, FL 33801 (863) 688-7743

Haines City Community Theatre Performing Old Ringers
Haines City Community Theatre is making history in Florida with the production of Joe Simonelli’s Old Ringers. According to Current President of the theatre’s Board of Directors, Ken Bledsoe. Haines City Community Theatre is proud to be the site of the Florida premier for the show. Ken has been with the theatre off and on for over 17 years and has worked with many other theatres in the area. Speaking about the current board of directors he sits on, Ken said, “We’re the people that get in there and build the sets and decorate the sets and act and direct and everything. We are pretty much a group of people that really do it for the love of theatre.” Ken, who is also the director of HCCT’s production of Old Ringers remarked, “We are constantly trying to expand our repertoire, make things different and better. That’s the climate, society has changed and we’ve kind of had to change along with it.” This embrace of new productions led the theatre to come across this play in what Ken called “an odd way.” According to the director, one of the
other board members, Wayne Shaw, used to own a theatre company in Chicago. Even though he has retired from that theatre and moved to Florida, he still keeps in contact with them. His association with the Chicago theatre landed the script for Old Ringers into the hands of Ken Bledsoe who loved the play. After he and the rest of the reading committee read the script, it was settled–HCCT was putting it on.
are friends, remind me very much of The Golden Girls in a lot of ways,” Ken commented while chuckling, continuing, “You have the 4 women, it’s like you have Sofia, Rose, Blanche, and Dorothy so they are very similar to the show, their dynamic with each other.” Though the play is reminiscent of The Golden Girls and maybe so far you’ve envisioned the women in shoulderpadded dresses, and large pieces of jewelry, it is actually set in current day, making it all the more interesting. The dialogue is very real according to Ken, it’s the type of conversations you would hear in your day to day life. Ken described the humor of the play as “smart,” and went on to say, “Part of the appeal for me personally is that it was clever. This play is written with a lot of double entendre, so it’s like they take it to the edge and you have to fill in the rest of the blank.”
Describing the play, Ken commented, “It was fresh, and familiar too, which is an odd thing to say, but it had a familiarity to it and I thought it would play well with the audience.” The plot of the play centers around four senior women who are looking to make money after their Social Security is cut. Fate and a wrong number, gave these four ladies the idea to start up a phone sex line! Plot twist, the main character Diane has a daughter, Amanda who is a born-again Christian and looks down on these types of behaviors. The four women attempt to carry out their endeavor without tipping her off. That’s a plot that’s hard not to giggle at!
Ken has been in contact with Simonelli about this play saying, “It’s interesting to see and anticipate what their take is, about what your take on their play is, because my direction might be very different from what they intended,” continuing, “The show
“I think one of the reasons that I really like the show is the 4 women that

had a lot of room for interpretation so that left it kind of open to take it in the direction that I wanted to.” With Simonelli’s encouragement to take the play in the direction he sees fit, Ken, the board, and cast have set to work to make the Florida premier a hit! Gary’ s Oyster Bar & Seafood House I like oysters! There, I said it. Though I’ve eaten fried oysters in the past, I would never try them any other way. When I decided to try oysters at Gary’s Oyster Bar in Lake Alfred, I asked friends, family, and coworkers how I should eat them. I received a range of suggestions on the ‘right’ way to eat an oyster: with a cracker, without a cracker, hot sauce, cocktail sauce, butter, lemon juice, horseradish, raw, steamed, grilled, and so on.
Walking into Gary’s it’s reminiscent of restaurants you might find right on the beach. From the 14.5lb Kodiak King Crab and photos of oyster dredging boats hung about the walls, to the replica ship above the bar, the nautical atmosphere promises a swashbuckling good time. It’s not just the atmosphere that keeps patrons returning, it’s the food. What do they sell the most of? You guessed it, oysters! The eatery goes through a staggering number according to Dave, “Even this time of year which is the slowest part of the year, we’re going through upwards of 70 or 80 cases of oysters a week. In the winter time, it will be upwards of 130 to 140 cases a week. Basically, I tell people right now, if they ask how many oysters we go through–a ton and a half a week.” And yes, they have found pearls in their oysters and allow patrons to take them home when found!
With so many options to choose, I decided to seek out the advice of the oyster aficionados at Gary’s Oyster Bar, Dave Brockway, and Andrew Derham. Originally from South Florida, Dave is the Food Manager and has worked in the seafood industry for 22 years, 15 of those years with Gary, remarking, “It’s just something I love, I come from the water anyhow.” Andrew is Gary’s step-son, who’s been a part of the oyster bar since he was just a kid, saying, “That’s how I got my start out here. I was seating tables, helping out when they would let me as a little kid.” Andrew grew up in Winter Haven and eventually attended USF in Tampa, which he graduated from in 2008. Through school and beyond, Andrew worked at Outback Steakhouse for 12 years, 6 of those years as a full-time manager. When his step-dad had an opportunity for him to manage the family restaurant, Andrew took on the role as General Manager. He remarked, “I’ve always had a love for this place. I’ve always been proud to say that Gary’s was in my family.”
Having never been to an oyster bar, the two explained to me how it works. Guests are welcomes to sit at a table or the bar. When sitting at the bar you can watch the oysters being shucked in front of you. You can then dress them however you like and push them over the bar into the long bin beneath when finished. I asked Dave about some of their other popular dishes, “One of my best-selling points is what we call the ‘Kerry Wilson’ which is blackened grouper, I suggest a medium spice. We serve that over a bed of cheese grits with a piece of garlic bread over to the side and a salad or coleslaw to go along with it.”
According to Andrew, “Gary went to the University of Alabama for Construction and that’s what he was in at the time, was construction, and that’s how he got his start. He built the restaurant, they ran out of money, he had to buy them out to get his money back.” That was in 1979 and the restaurant has become a local staple ever since. havenmagazines.com
For the oyster moment of truth, Dave brought out steamed oysters that were submerged in what they call ‘dirty butter,’ which is a mixture of melted butter, hot sauce, garlic, and Worcestershire–it’s addictive. Dave suggested that I take one of the oysters from the butter, and put in on a cracker for my first try. I did… 32
and it was fantastic! For the next one, he suggested doing the same thing but dabbing a bit of their homemade cocktail sauce on with it. I was hooked. (No fishing pun intended!) From there, I tried Todd’s CharGrilled Oysters, which you can get with parmesan or jalapeno bacon. Both were sensational, the jalapeno is a clear winner to me. Sampling their House Special gave me a whole new appreciation for fried catfish. I did have a favorite other than those delights, however. Too many times, I’ve gone to a seafood restaurant, ordered crab that was too pricey and received tiny crab legs that had me spending most of my dining experience trying to harvest a minuscule morsel from them. Not at Gary’s. Andrew and Dave brought out their Crab Feast, a sizable sampling of Snow Crab, Dungeness Crab, and Alaskan King Crab which boasted crab legs that were so big, I had to have the waitress, Kelly, show me the best way to crack them, which she happily obliged. Gary’s Oyster Bar, hands down, had the sweetest, most succulent crab legs, I have ever eaten. With the help of Andrew, Dave, and Kelly, I tried oysters for the first time and really liked them. If you’re a local, you’ve no doubt experienced the tasty seafood at Gary’s, but if you haven’t, it’s worth a special trip. 660 E Alfred St, Lake Alfred, FL 33850 Mon - Sat 4pm - 9pm Sun 3pm - 8pm garysoysterbar.com (863) 956-5055

A Habitat for Change Habitat first started as an in-home personal training company, deciding to open their first location after 6 months. Brandon explained, “When I started Habitat, I wanted to bridge that gap of someone who was going to pay a gym membership fee and not know what to do and someone who wanted a personal trainer. So, I made it where we train people in a group which allows for more people to afford the services.” Brandon knew where he wanted his first two locations after reading the 2012 Gallup poll results placing Lakeland and Winter Haven as the 7th most obese cities in the country. “Once I saw that statistic, it really motivated me to change the fitness and the health of Polk County and so at that time, Winter Haven and Lakeland, I knew we were going to have a location in both.” This year was a big year for Habitat as they moved into a facility in Winter Haven that doubled their square footage affording their clients more room to work out and showers, which he said he had been getting requests for.
Change is hard. When going about changing your lifestyle, poor eating habits and a lack of exercise can cease your progress. Have you ever walked into the gym, nervous to work out in front of others, clueless what workout to start with, so you spend 30 minutes doing what you hope is some semblance of exercise? Have you walked around the grocery store aimlessly trying to pick up ‘clean’ and ‘healthy’ foods, not sure what constitutes those two things?
The Habitat approach to fitness is what seems to be getting his clients such amazing results. Their website is full of success stories, attesting to the group training and nutrition education that the gym provides. Brandon explained this saying, “Our whole philosophy is that when you walk in, you’re not going to see a sea of machines because our program is based on functional movements, metabolic resistance training. It’s taking your strength training and your cardio and combining it together.” He continued, “We help heavily with nutritional education, and then training, and accountability.”
This lack of nutritional and fitness knowledge along with confusion within the diet industry is the problem a lot of Americans face and is in part to blame for the current obesity epidemic not just in our country, but in our own neighborhoods. Originally from Auburndale, Brandon Roggow, owner of Habitat Health and Fitness, noticed this problem and set out to implement a solution. Brandon didn’t start getting into fitness until he was around 18 or 19 years old. It was then that he decided he wanted to get in better shape and began working out 7 days a week for 2-3 hours at a time, but wasn’t seeing the results that he thought he should.
Habitat also holds challenges throughout the year, keeping clients engaged with the program and motivated to stay on track. These challenges that are both fitness and nutrition focused have led to an average of a 14-29lb weight loss for his clients in the 6 or 8-week period of the challenge. Now that he has taken on the obesity epidemic in Polk County, Brandon only plans to further expand to help as many people as he can, saying, “We’re called help people, so the more people that we can help, the better that we feel.”
He hired a personal trainer to work with him for a few months. His trainer scaled back his workouts to 1 hour at a time with a maximum of 3 hours a week and his body reacted. “I immediately saw the value in personal training. Being on the right program, doing the right exercises, for the right reasons,” said Brandon.
650 6th Street SW, Winter Haven, FL 33880 5369 Florida Ave S, Lakeland, FL 33813
After researching, studying, and watching other personal trainers, Brandon got his certifications with NASM, eventually obtaining the CES (Corrective Exercise Specialist) certification. He started with Lifestyle Family Fitness as a one-on-one personal trainer which he did for about 5 years.
Phone: (863) 875-5668
His idea for Habitat Health and Fitness came after observing the local fitness industry, saying, “I would see people join a gym, they didn’t know what to do, they would walk on the treadmill, they just had no real clue on how to get results and if they wanted to work with a personal trainer, it would cost anywhere from $500 to $800 a month.” havenmagazines.com

Amanda-Jo Nicholson Though originally from England, Amanda-Jo Nicholson and her husband David have embraced Winter Haven as their home. The couple has been in the States since 2004, obtaining their U.S. citizenship in 2014.
businesses or successful events and thriving community.” She continued with an audible pride for what she does, saying, “If I had written a job description of my ideal job, what I’m doing would be it.”
Amanda-Jo is a familiar face to most around town whether through her job as the Vice President of Member Services at the Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce or her involvement in the organizations she is passionate about. Her background is in banking, working in the industry in Europe for almost 17 years. When she and her husband moved to the States, Amanda-Jo found work for an accounting company out of Winter Haven and her husband David opened The Pool Captain, a pool maintenance business in 2008. Amanda-Jo explained that David was a Captain in the Merchant Navy and joked that he kept his rank even into the pool business.
According to Amanda-Jo, Winter Haven has become home to her, David, and their rescue dog, Jake. Out of all the places across the world they’ve lived, I asked why they set roots here. She replied, “When we came to Winter Haven, the people were what stood this community out from everywhere else.” She finished that thought, “The people are open and welcoming and they embrace new ideas, new people–they’re forward-thinking. It’s a very can-do city and that’s a very rare quality.” Outside of her job at the Chamber, Amanda-Jo has a love for music. A few months ago, she decided to take up the bass guitar and now takes lessons at Carlton’s Music in town, with her goal to eventually be able to play it proficiently.
“My biggest passion has always been being involved in the community I live in, particularly in education and animal welfare,” explained Amanda-Jo. She currently serves as the Vice President on the board of directors for Girls Inc. of Winter Haven, remarking, “Part of the reason I’m so involved is because it’s an education-based program and I’m passionate about literacy and education.” Amanda-Jo started tutoring other students when she was in middle school and continues her advocacy for education.
A recent flying experience at the Winter Haven Airport has also given her a hope for an unexpected future accomplishment. “One thing that I kind of, in a little corner of my heart, one day I would maybe like to get my pilot’s license and that’s not something I would have said to you if you would’ve asked me a week ago because I was terrified to go up and I loved every minute of it,” she relayed. She explained her interest in taking up new hobbies and learning new things saying, “I think you should always be trying to learn something new whether it’s an instrument, whether it’s a language, whether it’s an exam to pass, or whether it’s just something fun that you enjoy doing, but I never ever thought I would tell you pilot, but I do think I might want to do that one day.”
She continued, “My other passion is really animal welfare and we’ve been involved with the Humane Society and the Orchid Springs Animal Hospital’s ‘We Love Pets Fund’ for many, many years, for as long as we’ve been in the states which is how we rescued our little dog.” Amanda-Jo says her love for animal welfare stems from living in a rural community, where, as a child, she was always taught to care for and nurture animals.
Though flying and guitar lessons are important to Amanda-Jo, her larger goal remains focused on the community. She wants to ensure the children of Winter Haven have a good education and a community they can proudly call home and their place of business when they grow up.
Her ardor for those causes coupled with her love of community and sense of civic duty led to her eventual employment in 2009 with the chamber. She started as an ambassador, volunteering at events, saying, “That enabled me to get to know the community, to get to know our businesses and the civic-minded people here– that’s what drew me to get involved.”
Amanda-Jo’s appreciation for Winter Haven shone through as our conversation drew to a close when I asked if there was anything else she had to share and she commented, “Just how grateful David and I are to be here and to have been made as welcome as we are in this community,” continuing, “Thank you, to the people here for embracing us the way that they have.”
Amanda-Jo, with genuine happiness beaming through her voice, remarked, “When I started work here in 2009, I was lucky enough to get a job that literally is the job of my dreams–to enable me to interact right across our entire community with business folks, with community organizations, with our schools, and with everybody in between and really help them to achieve their dreams of successful

Servant leader runs for county commission serving others? Am I a positive role model for others? Do I establish positive relationships with my loved ones?” Professionally, she says success means “did I accomplish my career goals?”
It may well be time for her to break out her “magic golden shoes” she used to wear, Dr. Martha Santiago is running for Polk County Commissioner. Back when Santiago was a principal at Hillcrest Elementary, she broke out the golden shoes to play kickball with the students when the school held the Hawks of the Month program. Hawks of the Month recognized students who had made significant progress at school. Now, her golden shoes sit on a plaque, but Santiago is not letting any dust gather under her feet.
“I began my career planning with the end in mind,” she says. “Did I stay my course? Did I work hard to accomplish my goals? And, did I finish what I started?” With such a long career in educating, why would she want to run for office? “Simply stated – I am a servant leader,” she says. “My passion is to serve the people of Polk County and I believe I have the skills to fill that need. I’ve been blessed to call Winter Haven my home for 38 years. This is where I have raised my family, built lasting friendships, and established my career. It would be an honor and privilege to serve as the next County Commissioner. I will always serve to make this county a better place to live, work and play.”
The long time educator who enjoyed working with children says, “How could I work with children and not learn from them? They constantly reminded me of the importance of my role as a principal, of the impact I had on their life and future.” And it was that impact potential that eventually carried her to Polk State College, where she is the provost for the Winter Haven campus. “It is definitely a fulfilling job,” she says, “to work with students and help them reach their goals is so rewarding.”
Santiago has served on numerous community boards and nonprofit organizations, in addition to being an educator, provost, business owner and volunteer. “Community engagement is important,” she says. “There is a sense of worth when you work and serve your community to ensure as a people, we continue to improve.” And she feels as if her career in education will be an asset as she runs for office. It has been, she says, “a great foundation to understanding the needs of people and how to best serve them. I am here to work with and help everyone, whether it’s students or caring for people in our communities … they are all important to me.”
Her passion for changing students’ lives through the power of education has been a golden thread as well, perhaps that drives her to success. “I am responsible to ensure that students not only enroll at Polk, but that they also stay in college. I want students to be successful, which means to finish what they started. To graduate. In fact, graduation, for me is the highlight of my career,” she says. Like others who climb the ladder of success, she faced personal challenges. “But I was determined to move forward with my goals. I always knew what I wanted to do in life, and these words helped me stay the course: I know who I am, I know where I’m going, and I know how to get there!” Using the analogy of a palm tree, she says she tells young people that in a storm a palm tree bends, and “sometimes they really bend. But they always end up straight and tall again.” Success will come, she notes, but not without effort. “Learn to burn the midnight oil - work hard for what you want to accomplish,” she says. And learn to take risks. “Don’t ever let fear stop you from moving forward with your goals.” Here, she says it was her mother who was “a great motivator,” one who always encouraged her. “I always believe I am who I am because I stand on the shoulders of others,” says Santiago. “There are many who in one way or another have served as my mentor. There are some who saw something in me that motivated them to provide me with opportunities to move forward in my career.” What does success mean for her? It can be measured in different ways, “personal and professional,” she says. “I measure personal success by my core values, which are service, integrity, compassionate, and authentic. Am I living a life of

My heart belongs to Flywheelers Two antique tractor and engine collectors from Naples found themselves following their heart, and it lead them straight to Flywheeler Park. Lori and John Pascal loved the Florida Flywheelers show two years ago so much that they decided to become members. They walked around looking at everyone’s displays. “And we had to laugh because we had some of the same things,” said Lori.
Flywheelers come from all over to live for a while in their village, and the park is only open to the public on the select publicized days. The show is entirely put on by volunteers of the club. “Not a single person is paid,” she says, adding that Flywheeler Park is now 374 acres, 240 of which is developed. “It is just amazing to see what so many volunteers can do,” she says. “At Christmas in the Village, the smiles on these people’s faces,” she says, are special.
Flywheelers is a non-profit antique engine club founded in 1972 to promote interest in restoring, preserving, and exhibiting antique internal combustion engines, steam engines, antique tractors, autos and other labor saving devices, according to their website.
The event opens at 6 p.m., and tractors pull trailers into the community, making stops at four places in the Village. Christmas lights are everywhere, on the tractors and the displays. The food and toys collected from the donations go to four different communities in the area. “It is just a plain old fundraiser for a good cause,” she says. The first stop is to see Santa Clause and there are carolers there - where candy canes are given out to those who come to enjoy Christmas in the Village. The next stop is a petting farm where hot dogs are served. Then everyone piles back onto the trailers and cookies and hot chocolate are served at the next stop, where those who wish can hop on a tractor for a photo.
Both Lori and John immediately were taken with the club and all its activities. They met the previous caretaker of the Shell Gas Station exhibit at the Flywheeler Park, who was getting out of exhibitry because of his health. “We love the village, so we wanted to try to get a building,” she says. Each building (and there are 70-80 buildings) has a caretaker, a family or couple that takes care of the building and that is where they put their exhibit. John, a former Shell employee who worked his way up from tending the gas pumps to general manager, spent 27 years working for Shell. “So it was a perfect fit,” says his wife. Fred and Janet had built the Shell Station and named it “Fred’s Garage.” “We had Shell memorabilia, Shell signs, Shell flags,” she says.
And there is more cider and cookies at the next stop. Flywheelers want to preserve the past for the future. Taking a trip to one of the shows is akin to stepping back into the past, a simpler, slower time. The reason why it is important, she says, is because she feels that people in general have lost their patience. “I sign off every column to treat each other with kindness,” she says.
It was not long before John became active on the board of directors for the Flywheelers. He also helps run the Snow Engine, which is a 400 horsepower engine. And one day, when Lori was on her knees trying to get cool pictures of some antique cars, the editor of the club’s newsletter, Jane Portier, tagged her to become the club photographer. “I got caught taking pictures in the village,” she said. Now, Lori also helps write for the newsletter and club promotions. “This will be our second show season,” she notes. “We enjoy it. We enjoy the people who come in. We enjoy the people who teach us things.”
There is a flea market that is open as well, during the walk around shows. “If you have a Christmas list, the November show is the one you don’t want to miss. You can find anything there. It is a grown-up Disneyland.” Flywheeler Park is located at 7000 Avon Park Cutoff Road. Visit http://www.floridaflywheelers.org/ for more information. In January, the show runs the 17 through the 20th and Feb. 21 -24th.
“It is a fun family thing,” she says of the four day show that will be running Nov. 8 - 11, Dec. 8-9, Dec. 15 and Dec. 16. The December shows feature the Christmas in the Village, a ride along evening, where those attending donate new, unwrapped toys or non perishable food as their admission. Normally, admission is $10 a day. Parking is free. Family and pets on leashes are welcome.

Geneva Financial, Your Central Florida Lender by feltrim
Are you looking to finance the perfect home for you and your family? Hi, I’m Rafael Unzueta and I have a passion for the people and the communities of Central Florida. My father, Dr. Carlos Unzueta, proudly served the families and children of Central Florida as a physician for 40 years and passed down his love for the people in our communities to me. I’m proud to be a life long resident of Central Florida and will do all I can to simplify the mortgage process for you and your family. Let Geneva Financial secure the financing for your new home purchase or the refinance of your existing home.

THE TURTLE HOSPITAL, MARATHON KEY An Organization Dedicated To The Rehabilitation Of Sea Turtles.
Since the late Jurassic period, sea turtles have been roaming the world’s oceans and maintaining the eco-balance of their marine habitat. Unchanged in physical appearance since they first appeared, the ecothermic reptiles are characterized by a fusiform body (that prevent extremities from being retracted), and long flippers. The adapted traveler has the ability to reach speeds of twenty-five miles per hour, and can remain underwater for seven hours. But their instinctive existence is facing a new challenge. Modern day sea turtles are fighting for their survival. Life is dangerous for these guardians of the sea. On the beach, hatchlings are fair game for birds, crabs, and raccoons. And if the miniature swimmers make it to the ocean, they are eaten by gulls and schools of fish. Predators are not their only enemy. The greatest threat to these ancient mariners is from humans. Killed for their meat, eggs, and shells, sea turtles also face habitat destruction and long-line/net capture by commercial fishing. After prospering for 110 million years, nearly all species of sea turtles are threatened or endangered. The Turtle Hospital was founded by Richie Moretti in 1986, a retired Volkswagen mechanic who came to the Florida Keys to relax and go fishing. Finding himself concerned for the environment of the ancient islands, Moretti purchased the Hidden Harbor Motel and began using the 100,000 gallon saltwater pool as an aquarium to educate others about sea life. In 1991, he expanded by remodeling the adjoining nightclub and created a turtle hospital surgical facility. Because of his efforts and those of the hospital, approximately one-hundred sea turtles are rescued and rehabilitated each year. With a motto of rescue, rehab, and release; and conservation as a mission, the hospital operates through four main goals: 1) Rehabilitate injured sea turtles, 2) Educate the public through outreach programs, 3) Conduct and assist in sea turtle research, 4) Work for environmental regulation to make beaches and water safe for sea turtles. Until November 2005, the hospital relied on proceeds from the Motel for its funding. After an overwhelming blow from Hurricane Wilma that year, the facility was totally submerged and closed to the public. Afterwards, during the rebuilding process, funding was sought by program fees, gift shop sales, donations, and grants. Although sea turtles face shark attacks & infections, the majority of injuries are consequently caused by human interaction. Frequent admissions to the hospital are from the ingestion of plastics including fishing hooks and plastic bags. Entanglement by fishing line and trauma injuries from boat collisions are also devastating. The Turtle Hospital uses many licensed veterinarians with their primary vet being Dr. Terry Norton of Georgia Sea Turtle Aquarium. The hospital uses up-to-date equipment to perform the variety of surgeries required. More than half of the equipment has been donated by concerned individuals and local hospitals. With the help of many Universities, including the University of Florida, cooperative research of Fibropapilloma is being studied. The infectious disease leads to blindness resulting in the inability for the sea turtle to feed. havenmagazines.com

Seven species of sea turtles have survived to modern times. Five of the species are found in Florida and are protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1973. That includes the loggerhead, green, hawksbill, leatherback, and the rarest sea turtle in the world, Kemp’s Ridley. Before conservation strategies were in place, the hawksbill, (named for its beak), was hunted close to extinction for their shells to make jewelry. After receiving successful treatment and rehabilitation at The Turtle Hospital, sea turtle patients are returned to the wild from beaches or launched from a boat several miles from land. Public releases are announced in the hospital’s blog or through social media. Sea turtles play a vital role in the health of underwater ecosystems by eating seaweed. That maintains deep water grass beds and provides a breeding ground for shrimp, crabs, minnows, and numerous other sea life. Without the presence of sea turtles, the lower level of the food chain would become extinct. Female sea turtles take 20-25 years to reach sexual maturity, so egg-laying is vital to the species survival. Overdevelopment of beach nesting sites has interrupted that cycle. The loggerhead has showed a forty percent drop in beach nesting sites since 1998. In Mexico, thousands of turtle eggs are taken from nests each year and sold on the black market. Activists have asked people to support “Don’t Eat Sea Turtle” campaigns. The Turtle Hospital, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, was the first state-certified veterinary turtle clinic in the world. Location: 2396 Overseas Highway (mile-marker 48.5). Guided tours are 90 minutes. Cost: $22.00 (adults). $11.00 (children 4-12 years old). Reservations: 305-743-2552. Internet site: turtlehospital.org. Hurricane Irma Update: Owner Richie Moretti and Turtle Hospital Engineer, Tom Luebke stayed in Marathon through the storm. Other staff members returned after. The hospital suffered light damage to the building and shade awnings but thanks to the 30,000 gallon hurricane tanks, all the turtles fared well. Power to the water tank pumps and medical refrigerators were supplied by the onsite generators. “We fed the turtles before the storm and made sure they were secure,” says Megan, turtle hospital Education Specialist. After the storm, the sea turtles were fed again and given their medicine. While the clean up was taking place, a new arrival was brought to the facility by a Monroe County Emergency employee. The green sea turtle had been found trapped inside a huge mound of debris. Moretti says her name is “Irma” and she is doing well. Owner Moretti and the loyal staff members express sincere thanks to the first responders and supporters for all the well wishes and help. In two weeks time, The Turtle Hospital has installed new shade awnings for the tanks and reinstalled their billboard signs that had fallen. They are again open for business.
