LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Less waiting where it matters most – our emergency room.

Hello October! This month is Breast Cancer Awareness month and we honor 9 local women. These women shared their experiences with us, they were candid, kind and strong. Please read their stories, I’m sure you will be inspired. I’d like to thank Mike Potthast and everyone at Potthast Studios for being so nice (as always) and flexible with photo shoots after Irma took out his studio’s power for a week. To learn how you can get involved or support the research to find a cure for breast cancer, please visit www.breastcancer.org/ or https://www.cancer.org/ October also marks our 1-year anniversary! We are forever grateful for the support from our readers. We couldn’t do it without you! Thank you for reading our magazine! Thank you for stopping by the office to talk, thank you for letting us get to know you & thank you for helping us highlight the special people here in Polk County. As you can see from the cover, we’ve made a few changes! Steven Maynard, our new graphic designer, has spent countless hours developing a new layout and designing a new website. We’ve also spread our wings a bit and launched Haven Lakeland this month. Next time you’re over there, pick us up! I’d like to thank Lasater Flowers in Winter Haven for bending over backwards to get the flowers for our Lakeland cover. Irma was approaching and shipments of flowers had stopped. But they did it, and they’re beautiful. You can see both editions online at our new and improved website.

In a medical emergency, every minute matters.

LOCAL NEWS 99-year-old: I slept through Hurricane Irma

Pair covers the gaps in Texas, Florida

Citrus industry to feel storm’s impact

All of us have seen friends posting complaints on social media about not having power for a week after Hurricane Irma stormed through Polk County. Rose Johnsson, 99, is the type of person who likely never behaves this way. “This storm was nothing,” Johnsson said. “I slept through it.” Johnsson, who turns 100 next July, could not remember the worst storm she has ever lived through, but said there have been many. She had enough experience with hurricanes to prepare. “I filled kettles with water before the storm and bought lots of soup because I can eat it cold,” Johnsson said. “I keep the windows closed because I’d rather be warm than get bit by mosquitoes but I’m not afraid. I know I can’t do anything about it.”

In early September, with catastrophic flood water from Hurricane Harvey wreaking havoc on his home state of Texas, Navy veteran Bud Allen decided to do something to help. With his Marine veteran friend Robert, the two started doing search and rescue from boats and helping distribute supplies, many of which came from Floridians. As the flood waters in Texas receded, up came Hurricane Irma threatening the state of Florida. The two packed a pickup truck and drove east. They made contact with a member of Lake Wales American Legion Post 71. “Whenever disasters hit, rural areas are often forgotten,” Allen said. “We came here to fill some of the gaps.” Bud and Robert, who had limited money to stay in Florida longer than a week, decided that setting up a sustainable means of bringing supplies to rural areas of east Polk County was the best thing they could do to help out. It was decided to try and fly supplies in. Two days after arriving from Texas on Sept. 12, the team of veterans in Lake Wales coordinated three flights of supplies into Lake Wales Airport. The combined shipments are being warehoused at the American Legion building in Lake Wales, the largest American Legion facility in the world. Commander Anderson said the post does not have the means to distribute items to individuals. Leaders can contact Commander Anderson to arrange for pickup.

Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio visited Polk County the week of Sept. 11 to survey citrus damage wrought by Hurricane Irma. The impacts are three or four-fold when it comes to the county’s orange and agricultural business. In Lake Wales, the senators saw young fruit on the ground and trees split by wind. Growers talked of trees standing in three feet of water, which is a death sentence for a crop already under a decade-long siege by citrus greening disease. “Citrus is the crop that Florida’s associated with and it’s already facing significant challenges,” said Rubio. “Economically, it’s an enormous priority for the state. We wanted to make sure this didn’t get lost in this broader relief effort.” “We’ve had many hurricanes, we’ve had freezes, but this one is widespread,” said Harold Browning with the Citrus Research and Development Foundation. “We’re seeing the kind of damage we haven’t seen, ever.” Florida’s orange harvest usually begins around Thanksgiving, and about 90 percent of it becomes juice. Projections for the 2016-2017 growing season had called for 68.5 million boxes of oranges and 7.8 million boxes of grapefruit. “Before Hurricane Irma, there was a good chance we would have more than 75 million boxes of oranges on the trees this season; we now have much less,” said Shannon Stepp, executive director of the Florida Department of Citrus.

South Central Park: Reimagining the future A little rain didn’t hurt anything as a hundred or so people gathered under the eaves of the Greater Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce in late August to celebrate the South Central Park Groundbreaking. Anita Strang, Winter Haven Main Street director, said “We knew this park would be the missing piece,” noting the project would “bring a truly vibrant downtown to the next level.” Kyle Cobb of Cobb Construction, the site development company, said they are excited to partner with the city. “For those of you who have been working on it for 10 years, I cannot imagine how excited you are,” he said, to the crowd who attended the ceremony. “This project is so much more than streetscape,” he said, noting the elements of the design include updated infrastructure and water, with not 35 – but 38 more parking spaces downtown. Cobb noted that the design is going to make it much easier for pedestrians to get from one place to another. Mayor Steven Hunnicutt said “It will become a space our grandchildren will cherish as they gather with other children at community events,” adding that the park and its improvements will become a “conduit” for expanding downtown.

Green Dots Polk schools join seek to squash lawsuit against personal violence state Minnie Hassele, president of the Inwood Community Association, is part of a national initiative known as Green Dot, which seeks to intervene in situations that are high risk for others. According to literature distributed at a Green Dot meeting held at Wellcare in Winter Haven, “A green dot is any behavior, choice or action that promotes safety for everyone and communicates utter intolerance for sexual violence, domestic violence, child abuse and stalking. A green dot is intervening in a high risk situation - a green dot is looking out for your friends at a party, a bar or other highrisk situation.” Authored by Dorothy J. Edwards, Ph.D., the Green Dot Prevention Strategy connects those who wish to participate with training in how to responsibly deal with violence in society and how to make the community safer. Hassele, a survivor of sexual abuse, said that Green Dot has given her the opportunity to help others. “There has to be a culture change,” she said.

The Polk County School District in August joined a lawsuit with a handful of other school districts to sue the state over House Bill 7069, which they claim erodes local control. In part of the bill, which became law in June, there is a command for school boards to spend Title I money for charter schools. In the move, for which the board voted 6-0 to join, it has committed $25,000 with other boards that have joined the challenge. Reacting to the challenge, one area legislator said both the state and local school districts are focused on helping the students first, however, at the Aug. 22 regular meeting, local board members don’t agree with that assessment. Of the seven legislators that represent Polk County, six voted in favor of the bill and one voted no, that being Sen. Denise Grimsley, R-Lake Placid. “I have watched the slow erosion of our authority,” Sellers said at the board meeting. “I have seen it affect our students and over the last two years, I have seen it devastating our schools. Education suffers because of their decisions. I look to get it back before we go to court, but if we have to go to court, go to court.”

77 years later original Publix remembered

Art called more important than life or death

If you look really close, you can still see the word “Publix” in green tile under at the front door of the St. Matthew’s Catholic Church Regeneration Resale Shop at 197 W. Central Ave. in Winter Haven. In 1930, Jenkins opened the first Publix Food Store in Winter Haven. That was the old fashioned store, where the manager would fetch your food for you. Then he opened a second location in town, five years later. The 1940 Publix Super Market located at 197 W. Central, Winter Haven, would be like none other. Featuring air conditioning, florescent lighting, frozen food cases and various food departments, customers would be greeted by pastel colors, terrazzo tile and was called “a food palace of marble, glass and stucco.” The big thing that drew the community was what newspapers at the time called “the electric eye” door — automatic doors. Gregory Fancelli, Jenkins’ grandson, said his grandfather was not able to sleep the whole night before the original ribbon cutting for his 1940 Publix Super Market. “He spent the whole night on the steps of the church right across the street, wondering if he had just done the most crazy thing ever — if this was going to work out,” he said.

Tom Freeman, 92, has been painting murals ever since he retired from teaching art and administrating at Lake Wales High School in 1989. After nearly two decades at the high school, Freeman said his first mural was finished around 1991 at the corner of Stuart Avenue and Scenic Highway in downtown Lake Wales. Freeman has since painted four other outdoor murals in Lake Wales, two in Frostproof and two more in Lake Placid, plus many other indoor murals and hundreds of other paintings. The longtime artist and his significant other Marcia Pennington recently started painting a new mural inside Lake Wales Medical Center. They are painting a mural depicting Bok Tower on one wall and in the coming weeks when they finish, a second mural depicting Lake Wales Arts Center will be painted on another wall. Like much of his previous work, Freeman is donating his creativity and is only charging for the cost of supplies. “Art is not a matter of life or death,” Freeman said. “It’s more important than that.” Freeman joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served as a radar technician in the south Pacific for three years. Upon his honorable discharge, he got his college degree in art from Florida State University and went to work at GM and later a tobacco company before moving to Lake Wales in 1958. Freeman owned a frame shop and some other businesses before getting hired as an art teacher at the high school in 1970, all while painting at night.

STRONGER TOGETHER WORDS Amy Sexson The following pages are about 9 women going through life like normal. Probably a lot like the days we all have, kids, dinner, work, errands, the never ending list of things we have to do. The only difference is, in the midst of the chaos of life, these women were all diagnosed with breast cancer. And yet, they stayed strong. In fact, all of them say they became even stronger throughout the process. Can you imagine? You’re going through life, making dinner, going to work, it feels like you have control. And suddenly, sometimes in one day, you realize you don’t. It puts life in perspective. Be proactive with your health. Do self exams. 4 of the 9 women had clear mammograms just months before they got their diagnosis. Many had no family history of breast cancer. As you will learn from these women, thinking and living in a positive way will get you through the darkest times. According to breastcancer.org, about 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2017, an estimated 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. For those that will be diagnosed, be your own advocate. Do your research. Allow yourself to feel and accept support from those around you. Knowledge is power. To the survivors: you are my hero. The mental and physical challenges that you must endure are horrific. The strength and grace you display after nature and science has ran its course, is admirable. Thank you for sharing your story.

Sandi Allende Survivor Originally from Philadelphia, Sandi Allende, a 63year old mother of 3 grown children has lived in Winter Haven for 28 years. Her job as a registered nurse brought her to Orlando to work for VITAS Healthcare where she eventually became a team manager for a team of hospice nurses and doctors.

During her partial lumpectomy, which revealed that she had lobular cancer, the cancer was found to be aggressive. Her doctors suggested chemotherapy, after which she completed 33 treatments of radiation. Sandi talked about getting through the difficulty of chemotherapy and radiation saying, “It was tough, it was really tough, but I did it anyway. I still exercised and danced, I don’t know how I did it, but I did it because you need to move forward and stay positive.”

Sandi is a healthy eater and regularly works out and dances to care for her body. Another thing she never missed was her yearly mammogram. In 2015, Sandi discovered a lump in her breast. Deciding to be proactive, she made an appointment to have a mammogram performed. During her exam, the mammographer was taking unusually long, meticulously inspecting. After around 30 minutes, they found something and rushed Sandi to doctor who called her the next day to confirm there was something there.

During her treatment, her hair grew back very thick for a few months before all falling out again for good. She now has alopecia, a side effect from the treatment. This has given Sandi a sort of new identity. She gets to decide what she wants to look like every day now, remarking, “I wear wigs or I rock the bald look. Sometimes I’m a blonde, sometimes I’m a redhead, and sometimes I don’t have any hair at all.”

Sandi had biopsies to get an accurate diagnosis, one that would make her world spin, breast cancer.

The support she got from family and friends was immense according to Sandi, so much so that it’s hard for her to pinpoint one major supporter as they were all major supporters to her. From her friends, to her kids that kept her smiling, and even some of her coworkers which have also been touched by breast cancer, she had everyone she needed to help her get through the physical and emotional strain of treatment and recovery.

Working in the field for a hospice healthcare facility, Sandi often came across patients that had fought hard against cancer, but were sadly at the end of that fight. In a heartbreaking coincidence, the week she found out that she had breast cancer, she was working with two end-stage breast cancer patients. This, combined with her diagnosis really affected Sandi initially, but she knew she would have to stay positive to beat it.

It’s nearly impossible to be affected with something as daunting as breast cancer and not come out the other side with a new outlook about which Sandi elaborated, “I look at life so differently, I don’t worry about the stuff that I used to worry about. You look at your own mortality and you appreciate life.”

Given the decision between a mastectomy or a partial lumpectomy, Sandi opted for the partial lumpectomy to have the cancer removed. Through everything, her kids tried to keep things humorous and upbeat. Her son made a video of her going into surgery as if she was going in for a facelift and said, “Don’t worry mom, your face is going to look great!” When she got out they used a picture of Sandi’s 93-year-old mother to make it look as if she had gone in for a facelift and came out looking like she had aged to 93-years-old.

Sandi Allende doesn’t have a family history of breast cancer, she exercises regularly, and eats healthily. With these factors involved, she was still diagnosed with breast cancer and has this advice for others, “The best thing you can do for yourself is every year get your mammogram, start at 40, check your breasts and don’t be afraid if you do have one, go to the doctor.” WORDS Tara Crutchfield

Carmen Adair Survivor 31 years ago, Carmen found out that she had a disease known as malignant hyperthermia, which makes it extremely dangerous to be put under general anesthesia, making her mastectomy all the more serious. Her surgeon Dr. Susan Hoover, recommended that they get in, have the surgery, and get out as quickly as possible which the anesthesiologist agreed with. During the surgery, it was found that Carmen had two types of cancer: lobular and ductal carcinoma, which had spread to her lymph nodes, putting her in Stage 3. Through this daunting time of uncertainty, her biggest supporter, her husband Rod, took a leave of absence from work to care for his wife, and her loving friends pulled together to make a month-long meal train and hire a housekeeper so she could focus entirely on beating this unwelcomed disease. After her mastectomy, Carmen started chemotherapy in September and went every other week into December. With notable joy in her voice she said, “I finished December the 20th, it was the best Christmas gift ever.” In January, she began her 38 treatments of radiation that finished on March 28th of this year, only a few weeks after her birthday which was on the 19th. Through her recovery process, Carmen stayed positive with the help of her family and friends, telling them if they were going to call or visit that they too needed to stay positive for her sake. Carmen has walked away from her battle with breast cancer with a new lens to look at life through. First and foremost, she encourages women to do self-breast exams which she credits for catching the disease initially. Secondly, she insists on being kind to everyone because you truly don’t know what they may be going through and a little bit of kindness goes a long way. Though some parts were difficult for her to share, she opened her life to share her story. Carmen finished with a genuine sentiment about her experience, which everyone can benefit from, saying, “I still get very choked up over it. Today is a beautiful day, I noticed how beautiful the grass is, I noticed the red birds. You are just so much more aware of your surroundings, you don’t take people for granted.”

Carmen Adair of Haines City is mother to her 3 grown children, son Lyle, daughter Lindsey, and stepdaughter Audrie. This 58-year-old grandmother of 6 is married to her husband Rodney and spends her days working part time for Spa G in Winter Haven. It was a Sunday morning in May of 2016 when she noticed a lump on her chest. Carmen self-admittedly never missed a mammogram and had been for her annual mammogram in March just a few months prior, in which everything was normal. Unsure of what this sore, tender lump was, Carmen called her doctor to get an appointment the following week. Thankfully, her doctor had an opening for a 3D mammogram that Friday. Carmen took the appointment where they sent her immediately afterwards to get an ultrasound and told her that she needed to schedule a breast biopsy because the lump was very suspicious. In an unpleasant whirlwind of events, she had her biopsy on June 15th and was called to come in for the results just 5 days later, on the 20th. The doctor’s suspicions and Carmen’s worst fears were confirmed that day, she had breast cancer. Carmen summed up her initial reaction to the news saying, “It was such a shock, we had no idea, I hadn’t had any symptoms other than feeling really tired. My husband kept saying it was the heat, but I hadn’t been sick or anything.” She continued, “When the doctor came in and said that it was breast cancer, I just don’t even really remember too much more of anything he said that day.” Her doctors told her that she needed to move quickly so she chose to go to Moffitt Cancer Center to begin the process. She met with the surgeon to move forward and had genetic testing for the BRCA gene, for the sake of her daughter and granddaughters and to know whether she would have to have a double mastectomy. A small sliver of sunshine through the storm of her diagnosis, she did not carry the gene. It was decided that she would have a single mastectomy of her right breast on August 2, 2016.

Paula Harrold Survivor Paula Harrold is a wife of almost 17 years to her husband Matthew Harrold. Together, they have two teenage children, Hunter and Jana. This 40-year-old Winter Havenite is a first and second grade combo teacher at Polk Avenue Elementary School in Lake Wales.

Paula began chemotherapy on September 21st, every three weeks for about 5 hours and took a leave from her teaching job due to her weakened immune system. She had her treatments at Watson Clinic where she said they took wonderful care to ensure her comfort. Trying to stay upbeat during this trying diagnosis, she described how she made her chemotherapy days like a “girls day” explaining, “My friend Melissa Morrison, she went with me to every single chemo. She would sit with me for like 4 or 5 hours and we would just talk and we would try to make it like a visit, chit-chatting, like a girl’s day.”

A dedicated member of Heartland Community Church in Winter Haven, Paula was volunteering in July of 2016 at Vacation Bible School. She began to feel discomfort on her breast which she attributed to a bug bite or skin irritation. From July into August, her breasts became more swollen with an itchy rash. Initially, her doctor thought it could be a breast infection called mastitis, and put her on antibiotics.

Though this was a difficult time for Paula and her family, she felt the force of love the community had for her. She explained, “My church was wonderful. As soon as I told everyone about the diagnosis, I didn’t cook a meal. From September to January somebody literally brought food to our house every single day and they had a meal train set up.”

After no improvement and a mammogram in August that did not indicate any abnormalities, Paula was sent to a breast specialist to have skin and core biopsies.

Paula continued, “I work for Lake Wales Charter, I work at Polk Avenue–the teachers there, they did so many things, they donated sick days so I wouldn’t have to go without a full paycheck for a while because I missed a lot of school from staying home during chemo.” She said that one teacher alone donated close to 50 days.

In September 2016, her biopsies came back to reveal that Paula had Stage 3C inflammatory breast cancer. Paula shared her grief at diagnosis saying, “At first, I was really shocked, but I needed to be strong because I have two children and I want to see them grow up. I just prayed really hard and asked God to give me strength to get through this, so I took it day by day.”

On February 2, 2017, Paula had a double mastectomy. A little over a month after her surgery, she began her 7-week, 35 sessions of radiation during which she continued to teach.

According to Paula, inflammatory breast cancer is a rare form of cancer that only occurs in 1-5% of people that have breast cancer, and tends to present itself differently. Due to it often not being visible on a mammogram, many women aren’t diagnosed with it until they are in stages 3 or 4.

A situation that no one imagines themselves in, Paula stayed positive remarking, “I didn’t want to cry too much about this, I did not want to be too sad about this, because I wanted to be sure that every day that I had was a good day. Because if my days are numbered, I don’t want to have bad days. I’m not saying I didn’t cry a lot, I mean that first week was really hard, but then I just chose to be positive.”

She discussed her shock with this diagnosis and her advice for others saying, “I didn’t know anything about that type of breast cancer, I had always been told, “Do self-exams and feel for lumps.” Now I tell people look for any changes, like my skin was red, my breasts were hard, I had a rash, my nipples were inverting, those are all changes, not a lump, but changes that were signs of inflammatory breast cancer.”

Now, as a breast cancer survivor, Paula continues to be involved in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, spreading awareness, supporting, and empathizing with fellow fighters.

The cancer was already in her lymph nodes and very aggressive. Doctors told Paula that they needed to move fast to treat this cancer as it could grow quickly. WORDS Tara Crutchfield

Debbie Hancock Survivor She scheduled her lumpectomy and lymph node removal for October 1st, a day that isn’t far from her mind as she commented, “I celebrate every year October 1st, because that’s the day I had my surgery and that’s the day that I feel like I didn’t have it anymore.”

Debbie Hancock is a 55-year-old mother of two grown children and three grandchildren. She lives in Haines City with her husband Kenny Hancock to whom she will be married to for 40 years this December. Debbie has worked for Haines City Citrus Growers for 25 years and has been their HR Director for 15 of those years. A valued mother, wife, grandmother, friend, and coworker, Debbie was consistent in getting her yearly mammogram after turning 40. The cancer diagnosis she received in September of 2012 shook her world, forever changing her outlook on life. After returning home from a trip in August 2012, Debbie got her annual mammogram reminder in the mail. After having her mammogram done, she was called back to have an ultrasound and a few more views. The radiologist noticed an abnormality in the ultrasound and referred Debbie to the surgeon for a biopsy. Even though she had been referred to the surgeon, Debbie, being the positive person she is, still wasn’t too worried. In mid-September Debbie got the news that no one ever expects to get, her biopsy was positive, she had breast cancer. She remarked on the news saying, “When you get a cancer diagnosis, it just kind of floors you because when I went for the biopsy, I wasn’t worried about it, and the surgeon said that 85% of biopsies are negative and I thought, wow that’s a big number, I’m going to be in that 85%.” The cancer was caught early enough that she was only in Stage 1(a). Debbie credits her commitment to her yearly exams and the keen eye of the radiologist that detected it, for catching it in the early stages. Debbie and her husband were understandably shocked, scared, and in denial about the news. It was especially hard as her mother-in-law had passed away from the disease 11 years prior after a 2-and-a-halfyear fight. Putting the grief from the initial news aside, she had to move fast to start treatment. Debbie had this to say about the doctor asking her to make her surgery appointment the day she found out, “This just happens so quickly, so fast, and then you start your chemo treatments and your radiation treatments, it’s a lot.”

The pathology report after Debbie’s surgery revealed that the cancer was aggressive, and needed to be treated thusly, and it was in fact Stage 1(a) Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, HER2 Positive. Talking about from the point of diagnosis to her final treatments Debbie said, “That nine months was very tough, but it was doable. I did it and I worked full-time.” She completed 35 radiation treatments from November 12th-January 7th and began her 26-week treatment with Herceptin thereafter. Debbie went for her 6-month checkup in August, with her Oncologist, Dr. Hlalah, at Bond Clinic and says that everything looks good! After going through a breast cancer diagnosis and the journey of treatment, Debbie says that her priorities have changed, remarking, “I don’t worry or stress over a lot of things like I use to. There are a lot of things that aren’t as important as they used to be. I’m living life every day and enjoying life.” Her journey wouldn’t have been as bearable if it weren’t for her support system. “I had 3 major supporters. I had my husband, who saw me at the worst times, the best times, and everything in between. Then I had Deana Scarborough, my best friend, who always lifted me up and always supported me, and then my husband’s step-mother who would send me a card every week. It’s the little things that help you get through it.” Though she couldn’t talk about it when she was going through it, Debbie is now an advocate for breast cancer awareness and early detection. She continues to participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer initiative, even though she is 5 years out from her initial diagnosis. Debbie stays involved in it because of the importance of support and awareness, for her daughter, her three granddaughters, and for all women.

Donna Hale Grosser Survivor Donna Grosser is 56 years old, originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. She is married and has been living in Winter Haven for the past 30 years. She has three daughters, works as a mental health therapist at her own practice and has no family history of breast cancer. She kept up on her routine mammograms. It was during a self exam when she found something that she knew wasn’t right. However, when she went to her regular doctor and even to her gynecologist with her concerns, they both gave her a clean bill of health. Donna had what she described as “indentations” on her breast, and knew it wasn’t normal. She continued to pursue it to find answers. She eventually went in for an ultrasound, a biopsy and an MRI only to find out she had two tumors growing. Donna was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer.

He canceled work trips, he cooked, cleaned, took care of insurance and went with me to all my appointments. He asked questions. He researched.” And even more important, he told her that you don’t need breasts to be a beautiful woman. Whatever she decided to do about reconstructive surgery, he would support her. That kind of love that shows itself at the darkest of times brings strength.

Her husband had lost his mother to breast cancer when he was only 25. Understanding the emotional weight, she waited until she got home to tell her daughters in person. She was in shock all weekend. Donna immediately thought of this as a death sentence. She pictured her funeral at the church. She wanted to see her daughters get married. She wanted to be a grandmother.

Donna encourages you to be your own advocate. She has dense breasts and feels like if she would’ve known that in the first place, she would’ve requested an MRI. She watches her diet, exercises and keeps a sense of humor about it all. She reflects that it was only nine months of her life, it’s done and now she can move on. Her silver lining is the amount of love and support she received. Friends would fly in to help around the house, cook dinners or clean. Her kids found support at school with cancer support groups. “Don’t forget to take care of the caregivers, too,” Donna added. Their life changes and they have to make a lot of sacrifices. It’s very hard on them, not only to see someone they love go through this, but to help keep life as normal as possible. Her husband now tries to reach out and help other caregivers with support or advice. If you know someone that is sick, just sending a card will help. Don’t feel bad or ignore them because it’s uncomfortable. Support them, be positive and love them.

What has been the biggest change since then? “I don’t sweat the small stuff. I feel like the cancer could be back at anytime, I don’t want to waste any life.” Donna talks about one friend who passed away from cancer. She watched her struggle. “It’s a constant reminder that I’m blessed, to appreciate every single day.”

One way she could cope with such big news was to be proactive. She started talking to people, asking questions, reading everything she could about breast cancer. She studied so she could understand what was happening to her body. Her husband, Dr. Jude Grosser was her biggest supporter. She explained, “He took everything off my plate. He did anything I needed.

Heather Brown Survivor Heather walked into the room, full of an amazing energy, all smiles, photo books in hand ready to tell her story. She, like the others are surprisingly candid about their experience. In her case, it’s ongoing. She was going in for breast reconstruction revision surgery the week I initially reached out to her. Her response was casual, “Would you like to meet for coffee one morning next week?” A testament to her strength and frame of mind as a survivor.

gave her the support she needed. Heather also said her family and friends, she calls her “framily,” was an amazing support group. She explained, “I learned that the strength isn’t something that comes just from myself, but from those around me who fill my ‘tank.’ My framily armors me with every kindness and their sincere sense of humor.” Heather explained that when she was going through chemo, radiation and multiple surgeries, she felt like she was experiencing it in the third person. “I knew this was happening to me, but I didn’t feel or look exactly like me at the time. The real me was just under the surface, waiting to shine again, waiting to have energy and hair and eyebrows again, waiting to be me again.”

Heather will be 39 this month, married to her high school sweetheart Kurt, mother of 3 feline “fur babies.” Heather has worked at All Saints Academy since 2005. She kept up to date on breast exams, no family history of breast cancer, everything was good. Just two months after her last clinical breast exam, Heather was out working in her yard all weekend. She noticed a reddened, itchy bump on her breast. “I thought nothing of it! I’d been working in the yard all weekend planting and putting out fresh mulch. Truly, I thought some kind of bug stung me or common dermatitis,” she explained. It just so happened that she had a regularly scheduled checkup with her GP a couple of days later. She showed him and he immediately sent her for a stat biopsy. “I thought he was over-reacting,” she said.

She genuinely feared losing herself to the disease. Now, being a survivor, means more to her than just living. She refuses to let cancer and its aftermath change her. “I am still myself: headstrong, considerate and loyal. But now I have balance I didn’t realize I was missing. Before breast cancer I thought I was strong, now I know I am strong.” Heather says surviving cancer and the treatments has made her into a better version of herself. When asked if there were any misconceptions about breast cancer she would like to shed some light on, she replied, “I thought I was too young. I thought breast cancer was an inherited disease. I thought breast cancer was a death sentence but I didn’t die thanks to the care from my husband, family, framily, felines, doctors and nurses.”

Three days later, she & Kurt went in for the results. Heather was diagnosed with Triple Negative BC stage 3c invasive ductal carcinoma. Feeling completely blindsided, devastated and in shock. Heather said, “I allowed myself a brief pity party but I didn’t live there!” She immediately went into “research mode.” She Googled everything about it. She interviewed (she says it might’ve been closer to interrogating) everyone she saw, nurses, doctors, friends even people in the waiting rooms. She couldn’t get enough information. Only 10 days after getting her results, Heather found herself in surgery having a chemo port installed above her right clavicle. On the 11th day, she started her first of 15 chemo treatments.

I’ve seen Heather since her surgery, and she’s doing great. She shared photo books with me describing what chemo, radiation and reconstructive surgery looks and feels like. Her strength shined through when she talked about everything she’s had to do and everything still to come. She didn’t tell me how bad radiation burns or how sick she would get from chemo. I had to ask her. She clearly focuses on moving forward and staying positive. She took what had once completely devastated her and found the courage to face it head on. From that pain she has found true strength.

Her husband Kurt was her biggest support. “I wouldn’t be here without him.” His sense of humor and strength

Rachel Lobdell Survivor Rachel Lobdell is 39 years old, married for only 2 years to Matthew Lobdell although together for 5. One step-daughter, 17-years old. Rachel works in compliance for an investment firm. She described her job like twirling 15 plates in the air at a time, there’s always something going on. And then when she’s at home, she’s involved with life, volleyball games, racing around, cooking, laundry...busy every day.

friends, and online groups. She joined a closed group of people on Facebook going through the exact same thing as her at the same time. It was a place to go and ask questions, vent or just talk. She was able to connect with people every night who knew exactly what she was going through. Rachel told me about a study from Germany that she had read about. They asked women before treatment, how do you think it will go and then again at the end of treatment, asking how they thought it went. Every woman said the same thing going in as they did at the completion. If they started out with a positive outlook, they finished with a positive outlook. She took this to heart and began her treatment with a very positive attitude. Her motto was, “Don’t freak out until you have to.” She knew her routine. She got chemo on Wednesday, Thursday was fine, but Friday she knew she would feel bad. Instead of taking 4 months off of work, she just took Fridays off. Saturdays were terrible, she described it as the worst hangover combined with the flu. Sundays she would be feeling back to normal and “ready for church.” Friends were constantly checking in on her. On Fridays and Saturdays when she felt bad, friends would come over just so she wouldn’t be alone. They would just hang out and talk.

Rachel has a family history of breast cancer, on both sides of her family. She also has a history of Fibrocystic breast disease, which is not uncommon, it just means the breast tissue is dense and feels lumpy. Because of both reasons, Rachel started getting routine mammograms at age 35. She was vigilante with self exams. One day, she felt a lump. “I was pretty sure it was benign,” she said. She went, had it checked out and was correct, it was benign. However they found something behind it that caused alarm. She had a mammogram and ultrasound. At that point, she described to me that she knew she had cancer. “You just know.” Rachel went in for a breast MRI and a biopsy. While waiting for the results of her tests, the thought of having breast cancer totally occupied her thoughts. She was very stressed about it. But, she did what she always does and started doing her research. She described herself as a “crazy studier” and read everything she could get her hands on. This helped her to understand what was happening. She was mentally preparing for whatever could happen. “I was 38, I was being realistic. I was coming to terms that it will be ok.”

“I used distractions to help me through. I continued working, I’d be in chemo and checking my emails afterwards just to keep my mind distracted. If I had taken that time off and sat at home the whole time, it would’ve killed me.” Rachel never called in sick to work. She was always being proactive. She kept her positive attitude. “Breast cancer is typically not a death sentence,” she said. “Yes, there is life during treatment. Yes, I still found reasons to laugh. Don’t avoid me-distract me, make me laugh. People stay away because they don’t know what to say.”

She was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Situ Stage 2 A. Surgery was scheduled. She explains she was scared out of her mind. When it first dawned on her that she would be getting chemo and losing her hair, she lost it a little bit. “I’m going to be bald in Christmas pictures!” She told Matt. His response, “Yea, but you’re going to look great bald, babe!” You can’t really ask for more than that. Rachel told me it’s during the hard times when your true character comes out. Not only did her cancer bring her and her new husband closer together, but it strengthened their commitment to each other. This was the foundation of the year to come.

I asked her about her motto, did she ever end up freaking out at some point? “No. I never did. I gained an appreciation for what my body can handle, though. I had no idea how much my body can tolerate and heal from.” As for work and life after treatment? She’s still super busy, but her perspective has changed. She’s busy because she wants to be. And when she’s tired and driving home from a long day at work, instead of being overwhelmed about cooking, doing laundry, running errands...she’s incredibly grateful that she can cook, do laundry and run errands.

Matt is Rachel’s biggest supporter. “He encouraged me to talk about it. He allowed me to voice the things I was scared about.” Not one to cry at the drop of a hat, Rachel was able to find strength through knowledge,

Sara Zink Survivor Sara is turning 83 this year, married for 65 years, raised 5 boys and is one tough woman. I called her one morning for our interview and she explained that she was sitting in her “sewing corner oasis.” Sara is an avid sewer and was busy making more decorative oven hangers, filling orders and getting ready for craft season. “I feel good sitting here, I sew all the time,” she said. Sara was very candid with me, and kept a sense of humor for the entire phone call.

and said she absolutely hates wearing her prosthetics! But then, she was OK with it. She had the full support of her family, especially her husband and nieces. They were behind her all the way. One of her nieces also had breast cancer and was going to a woman-to-woman support group for it. She invited Sara, who started going to the meetings about once a week. “I started learning a lot. I realized that maybe I didn’t have to get a full mastectomy. But at the time, I was scared and I just didn’t know.”

Sara worked for 25 years at the Hyatt Orlando as a Communications Specialist. She “happily” retired in 2000. That’s the same year she found out she had breast cancer.

When asked what was different about her life after cancer, she said nothing. (Except the prosthetics, she still hates them.) “Breast cancer wasn’t that bad. It wasn’t the most difficult part of life for me. I’ve raised five boys. I’ve given birth to 6 and lost 2 of them, that was hard, this was just scary.” Sara lost her only daughter, her first born child when she was still a baby. One of her sons died this past May. In hindsight, that was much harder to deal with for her.

Her doctor found a lump during a regular office visit. She went for a mammogram and they found cancer, luckily finding it early. “Back then, we didn’t know anything about it. We never talked about it. I didn’t do self exams because I figured I didn’t need to,” she said. When Sara found out she had cancer, she was scared. Twenty years later, she can laugh about what she did next. “I bought myself a bottle of Jack Daniels. I had a few drinks and then I shed a few tears. And then I was fine.” She was hesitant to tell me her reaction but ultimately said, “It’s the truth, it’s what I did!”

“I have two friends that died from breast cancer because they didn’t get the help they needed. It hurts to know that they could still be alive today if they knew they could get help. They died unnecessarily. That’s what’s sad. It shouldn’t have happened,” she explained. Sara is an amazing woman. “Sometimes life is hard, you need to tough it out. Ask anyone. I raised 5 sons, I can handle it,” she said with a laugh. Sara was a delight to talk to. Not only that, but she seems to have it all figured out. She does what she loves every chance she gets. She laughs about what she can and she feels sad about what is truly sad. It’s not complicated, just keep moving forward.

Sara’s doctor suggested that she get a complete mastectomy. At the time, she and her husband were so scared, they just wanted the cancer out as soon as possible before it spread. She went ahead with the surgery and didn’t require any chemotherapy afterwards, she said that was the best news. It was very hard to get used to in the beginning. She laughed

Alison Kinloch Martin Survivor Alison is 49 years old and was born and raised in Lake Wales. She’s been married since 2005 to her “amazing” husband. She has 2 kids, a daughter that is 27 and a son who is 17 and was born profoundly deaf and cognitively delayed. Her mother is blind. However, no family history of breast cancer. Alison loves working with kids, and was a certified preschool teacher until 2010.

for the family. Her daughter has been right there since day one. “I feel guilty sometimes, my daughter does so much for me,” Alison said. She went on to say that occasionally she feels like the roles have been reversed, her daughter has become the protector or the “mom” in the relationship. She’s voiced her concerns but is met with the truth. They don’t know how much time they have left together. “I want them to have good memories. I won’t be any good for them if I’m depressed,” she explained. Alison has faith in God and a heaven, and still, with everything going on, she puts others first. “I worry about my mom and my son more than I do about my future,” she said, very matterof-factly.

In April of 2014, during a routine mammogram they found a lump. After more tests, it was determined that she had breast cancer, still in the early stages. “I’ll never forget it. I knew exactly what was happening, I had this feeling come over me. I felt numb. I went home, went out to the lake and stared at the water. I prayed. I fell apart. But that was it. I was OK after that,” she said. In May she went in for a lumpectomy. Doctors were happy, the surgery was a success, they had removed the cancer. In combination with radiation, things were looking good.

The last few years have changed Alison. Her priorities are totally different now. She sees life differently. “I put myself in other’s shoes before assuming things about them. I used to be critical of others and now I stop and think, what can I do to help them? I want to be a positive role model for others, so they don’t feel alone.” Alison explained the importance of a support system. “Going through cancer is rough. You need people to talk to, to listen to you and not criticize you.”

At home, she was still sick all of the time, vomiting, weak, just not feeling well. Her daughter urged her to get a CT scan. Alison knew that something was wrong. She went for the scan and found out the cancer had metastasized to her spine. Her breast cancer is in remission, but she has incurable bone cancer beginning on her spine. It has been 3 years and she is required to take medication every day just to keep her stable. Her bones are brittle and the pain grows everyday. She can no longer lift anything over 5 pounds, which means no longer caring for and even picking up children, her passion in life. She gets treatment at the Moffitt Cancer in Tampa every 3 months.

Alison battles bone cancer every day with constant physical pain. She has ongoing faith and is incredibly touched by the people in her life. “I’m not anything special, but my friends still check in on me,” she said she feels that in her heart. She is truly touched by the people around her and hopes to remain a positive influence in people’s lives. With that being said, she went on about the importance of getting mammograms. She talked about learning about it, getting educated and taking care of yourself. “It’s definitely worth being serious about. Breast cancer can happen to anyone at anytime.”

Her biggest support is her husband and daughter. She said her husband is amazing, loyal and a hard worker

Real Men Wear Pink The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, one of the biggest events in the name of breast cancer in Polk County, is right around the corner. Breast cancer survivors, those currently going through treatment, and supporters alike will come together at the Frances Langford Promenade on Lake Mirror in Lakeland on October 14th to raise awareness, donations, and collectively walk a 5k for the cause. With women being the primary group affected by breast cancer, it’s understandable that the conversation around the disease focuses mainly around them. But, what about the men? The men whose mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters have been touched by breast cancer? What about the men who themselves have or have survived it? This is a concept not lost on the American Cancer Society. They have created a program to give men a greater presence in the fight against breast cancer called Real Men Wear Pink. I spoke with the Communications Director of the southwest region for the ACS, Jennifer Howe, who shed light on the start of the program, “This is a program we created a couple of years ago to try to reach the men in our communities and in our lives. The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events are so powerful and were reaching so many women in so many communities, but we kept hearing from men that they wanted to find out how to be involved in it.” The pilot program began in Jackson, TN in 2013 and made its way nationally and to our community for the first time in 2016. Last year, the

national initiative raised $2.5 million. For the Real Men Wear Pink campaign, community members can nominate candidates to be in the program. The men then wear pink throughout the month of October to raise awareness and work to raise funds to go towards early detection, prevention, research, and patient support according to Howe. The patient support services that the American Cancer Society provides mean so much to so many that are going on the journey of treatment and recovery. The burden that cancer puts on the lives of those affected can be the difference between going to work to put food on the table or driving two hours for treatment. Some of these programs include Road to Recovery, where volunteers drive patients to and from treatment, Reach to Recovery which pairs cancer survivors with those going through treatment to offer emotional support and comfort, and the Hope Lodge, where patients that are outside of a reasonable proximity to treatment, can stay for free. Jennifer, whose grandmother was a two-time breast cancer survivor, spoke on the importance of breast cancer awareness, fundraising, and the efforts of the American Cancer Society, remarking, “It’s not enough for us to just go out and ask for money, we want to show the community what we are doing with that money and the way that I can do that through my job is by telling those stories. The more stories we can tell, the more people we can reach.” The fundraising goal for RMWP this year in our area is $50,000 and Jennifer predicts that it will be

exceeded as the number of men involved went up from 12 last year to 17 at the time we spoke, and continues to rise. Jennifer said jovially that one of the reasons that the fundraising piece of RMWP is so successful is because the men get so competitive. Speaking with Tim Calhoon, a participant for this year’s campaign, he has set a personal goal for himself of $5,000. Tim works for Mead Johnson Nutrition and owns Frescos in downtown Lakeland with his wife, Tina. Tina, who is a thyroid cancer survivor, has been affected by breast cancer through her mother and ex-husband’s mother who are both survivors. Tim sees this as a scary possibility that Tina or her daughters could one day be diagnosed and is showing his support through his involvement in Real Men Wear Pink. Both of his parents and Tina’s father have passed away from cancer so he wants to help in the fight in any way he can. I asked Tim why he thought the program was so important to which he responded, “Awareness is the most important part. Money in some ways is secondary, although the money is important for treatment, diagnosis, and potential cures. More than anything else, it’s just an awareness in the community because I think there are a lot of people that are affected, but either are hesitant or not sure where to go.” I asked Tim how he planned to represent the cause and adhere to the title of the initiative and he answered, “I wear Pink all the time anyways.” He continued, “So for me, it’s just adding pink in more often than I normally 39

wear anyway.” Jennifer expressed the different ways the men wear pink and the growing contagious excitement as the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk approaches saying, “They all do it differently. In fact, some of them start out with a pink tie and then by the end of it you could spray paint them pink and they’d be ecstatic.” Donations and nominations for Real Men Wear Pink candidates can be done through their website, Real Men Wear Pink of Polk. Polk State College Celebrates 50 Years of Theatre

It was earlier in Spring of this year when Mark Hartfield, the professor of theatre and theatre program coordinator at Polk State College got an email about a big event sneaking around the corner. With all the planning, rehearsing, and performing that goes into running the program, he didn’t think about the fact the theatre program at Polk State was approaching its 50th anniversary until the man who started it all, Norman Small, reminded him. According to Hartfield who’s been with the college since 2011, it was 50 years ago, in the fall of 1967 that a 22-year-old Norman Small directed the first play for Polk State, Antigone. He directed a play called Bus Stop the following spring, and the college continued to put on two productions a year until 2009 when they bumped it up to four. Hartfield went on to explain how the theatre program functioned in years past saying, “The early years, there was no theater. They were performing at the Student Center and the Women’s Club, which had a little theater space. When they constructed the Cypress Gardens Community Center where Theatre Winter Haven is, they did some performances there until they finally built this facility in 1980.” Throughout the years, the theatre program has been handled by talented professors with Norman Small running it until the early 1980’s according to Hartfield. From then until 2009, George Randolph served as the professor of theatre who then passed it on to Paul Carbonell, and currently Mark Hartfield runs the program.

havenmagazines.com

The productions for this celebratory year were chosen before the anniversary was brought up to Hartfield, about which he said, “Honestly, it’s sort of serendipity that we had chosen a kind of light, fun season that had some new things and some old things in it.”

Small also commented on theatre within the area saying, “When I moved to Winter Haven, there was one community based theater, now there are four. That says something for either the audience that appreciates the arts or the hard work of those who bring it, or a combination of both.”

The 2017-2018 theatre season for Polk State includes Lend Me A Tenor by Ken Ludwig, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee by William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin, The Clean House by Sarah Ruhl, and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

You can connect with the theatre on their Facebook page, Polk State Theatre, or by visiting their website, www.polk.edu/theatre which has all the information about upcoming shows, auditions, academics, and box office.

Looking into the future for the next 50 years, Hartfield says he is focused on recruiting more students for the theatre program, increasing academics, and working to improve their already shining production quality and value.

Congratulate Polk State College’s theatre program on 50 years of commitment to the arts, their students, and the community by attending this season’s line-up of productions!

Hartfield says they have a great technical theatre and look to entice more students to the program because of its value. Studying theatre at Polk State College can earn students their Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts, setting them on a path to attend one of Florida’s major universities to obtain their Bachelor’s Degree.

Polk State College Theatre WINTER HAVEN MAIN STAGE THEATRE 999 Avenue H NE, Winter Haven – Fine Arts Building (863) 297-1000

I spoke with Norman Small about his thoughts on Polk State celebrating 50 years of theatre. He reflected on the last 50 years and expressed the exciting thing about where Polk State came from and where it’s going in terms of theatre is that they now offer more production, accept more theatre majors, and have the state of the art theatre to perform in.

Growing Positivity

The world is filled with great ideas. How many of those great ideas are missed because they aren’t acted on? 23-year-old Kurtis Flanders, founder and director of Growing Positivity thinks that number is too many, and has a desire to change that. Kurtis, who is in the in-home patient care field by day, also volunteers with 5 nonprofits locally including Arts Ensemble. Kurtis believes the arts can heal and sees the power in positive thinking. Through his work with nonprofits and volunteering through the years, he’s found his calling saying, “I like helping people, I like giving back to the community. My greatest desire for our future is to see our community grow and come together.” The group now known as Growing Positivity was originally started as a group on Facebook called, Becoming the Change. There, they would share and discuss forward thinking ideas like clean energy and sustainable technology. In this group, 3 friends stood out to Kurtis: Cheyenne Yost, Amber Jairl, and Emily Skaggs. He commented on his friends saying, “I loved the way that they thought and each one was their own individual and that’s really why I picked them.” Seeing the response and knowing that it had a potential to be more than just a group, together the four united to form the Facebook page Growing Positivity. Kurtis remarked, “We saw a real dynamic need for more positive thinking.” Aside from their bi-weekly board meetings to discuss new projects and the future of the group, they recently had their first public event

at the Winter Haven Garden Center Ballroom on August 20th. At the event, there were 2 live music performances, 2 fire performances, a pop-up fashion runway, art on display, and free food for the attendees.

predates the Orange Dome and it fell in 2005.” Kurtis expressed that he felt his gift was not art or music, but service– service to others, the community, and humanity saying, “Humans have pretty much written the past and their going to write the future and I’ve got air in my lungs and I know how to talk so why not give it a try.”

Kurtis went into depth about something he calls the domino effect saying, “We started what I like to call the domino effect which is people that wear dominos to signify that they believe in a better future and believe that they can be part of the change. If you have a domino that stands by itself, not much can really happen, but if you put a whole bunch of dominos together and cause them to interact, then you see something happen.”

To engage with the group and help push our community forward with big ideas put into motion, you can find them on their Facebook page, Growing Positivity, and stay up to date about future projects and events.

When asked about who in the community would benefit from Growing Positivity, he responded, “Our target audience is everyone. We hope to bridge the gap between generations because we know that the older generation has a very good understanding of a different aspect of life than we do, and we might have a very different aspect, and we both have to learn from each other.” The next big project the group is tackling is getting local businesses and organizations together to help prevent food waste. The group has partnered with local businesses that have agreed to give back food that is about to expire to the Winter Haven Mission and other missions and pantries, and give food scraps and food that has expired to be turned into compost for community gardens where they can grow fresh, local, healthy food for those in need. He described another approaching group effort, “We’re already on track to bring back a local landmark that 42

Inside Out Yoga Celebrates 4 Years

Yoga–an exercise that strengthens both mind and body, is making its way up in popularity around Winter Haven thanks to Inside Out Yoga Studio. It started in 2013 when Kerry Wilson, the president of Six/Ten LLC, saw the newly renovated space on 3rd Street and thought it would make a cool spot for a yoga studio. Kerry, who’s been doing yoga since he was 17, reflected on bringing a larger platform to yoga within the community saying, “It’s been fun. There’s been a lot of people turned on to the practice, a lot of positive feedback. You know, we don’t have a lot of people, it’s not like we’re busting at the seams, but it’s been a steady growth and interest in it and that was kind of my primary focus.” He continued with that thought, adding, “It hasn’t been looking to make a big profit enterprise, it’s about spreading the word a little bit and spreading the practice and I think we’ve been successful at doing that.” This year marks their 4th Anniversary and a move to a new space across from Central Park in Winter Haven. This move is for a few reasons: one, a bike shop located on Cypress Gardens Boulevard is relocating to their 3rd Street location according to Wilson, and two, the space was available downtown right on the park which could mean new opportunities for the studio. Kerry expressed his excitement for the move downtown saying, “The idea of foot traffic and all the events in the park and the excitement of what’s going on downtown in general, we think is going to get more people interested.” Their move will be marked with an anniversary celebration according to

Jody Reece, one of the studio’s yoga teachers , on Saturday October 7th from 3-6. The celebration will entail a free, all-levels community yoga class, followed with a free crystal bowl sound bath, which is a specialized class that they offer once a month at the studio, and libations from Grove Roots Brewery. Jody gave some insight into some of the new things they’ve been offering like a class at Grove Roots called “Hair of the Down Dog,” a make your own hula hoop class and an indigo dyeing and shibori workshop. On Friday, October 27th from 8-10 pm, the studio will be putting on an event called “Glow, Flow Yoga, and Bowls” which will be led by Michelle Morris and Buffy LaRoux. Jody laid out the event saying, “Come with your own glow paint on, we’ll have some glow lights, bracelets, necklaces, decorations in the studio. It’ll be a fun kind of techno-chill music playing, it’s be upbeat really fun.” She also commented that this type of class will be new for the area, with no other local studios having done it before. I asked Jody about the successes that the studio has seen. Her reply revealed the help that the yoga studio truly wants to extend to its patrons, “For me as a yoga teacher, the success is, and I think this would be true for any of the teachers at the studio, is when our students are seeing improvements in their health and in their life.” Kerry and I wrapped up our interview with his thoughts on the benefits of yoga, to which he explained, “If your goal with exercise is to feel better and feel happier, you’ve found it.” Join Inside Out for their anniversary celebration, or one of their many 45

Cherry Pocket Down the scenic, winding back roads of Lake Wales, tucked away in a nook, is where you’ll find Cherry Pocket–a fish camp and restaurant like no other. Nestled on Lake Pierce, you can smell that old familiar smell of Florida, that lets you know good times are on the way. Even the name, Cherry Pocket, evokes a level of excitement in anyone that’s ever been there. Where does the name come from? Its origins come from a neat little story from ‘back in the day’ relayed to me by assistant general manager, Linda Stokes, “The original owner, his name was Mr. Cherry. Back in the ‘40s when the local fishermen would come in, the inlet was shaped like a pocket, so they started calling it Cherry Pocket.” The fish camp was built in the 1940’s according to Stokes, “It’s where all the local men would come and have a beer, they would even ride horses through the restaurant to get a beer.” Its popularity grew as fishermen and families alike would travel to the fish camp to stay and fish Lake Pierce. Sitting on 25 acres of land, Cherry Pocket is now a world-famous fish camp says Stokes. “We are worldknown. We have people call us from overseas on a regular basis to see if they can come stay in an RV, or a cabin, or to set up a party.” I stepped inside Cherry Pocket for lunch, where the fun, stories, and big fish tales from every patron were written on the walls. Dollar bills with words, sayings, pictures, and stories adorn the walls, adding to the already pleasant, good-time atmosphere. License plates from just about every state in the continental U.S. accompanied the bills with fishing poles hanging from the ceiling, and fun signs hanging everywhere like ‘Jimmy Buffett Drive.’ Stepping outside, there is a boat that has been converted into a bar giving a very ‘beach hut’ feeling to the patio overlooking the lake. Linda said it was 2004 when they built what they call ‘the deck’ and the owners Rick and Elsie Eten, brought the boat up from the Keys to be turned into the bar. I decided to have lunch while I was there, starting off with one of their fish tacos as an appetizer. I had an option of fried, blackened, or grilled–I chose

havenmagazines.com

46

blackened. A short time later, they brought it out and it was not a disappointment. It was a piece of blackened fish laid over their homemade coleslaw on a flour tortilla with a side of their also homemade tartar sauce–yum! Stokes explained the owners’ commitment to homemade dishes saying, “The owners and their son created all the recipes themselves. We make our own dressings, our own sauces, we created our own hushpuppy recipe so everything here, they did themselves.” For lunch, I had the shrimp and oyster platter because you can’t go to a seafood restaurant and not get seafood, right? It came with 6 large fried shrimp, 6 fried oysters, their signature battered french fries, coleslaw, a hushpuppy, and tartar and cocktail sauce. Everything tasted like it was paired to go with each other, a testament to their home-cooking style. The restaurant has a full liquor bar to make all the usual suspects like margaritas, rum runners, and hurricanes, but Linda says that they have popular signature drinks, too. The most popular are the ‘Sexy Gator Bite’ and a ‘Screaming Yellow Chicken.’ Going along with their fish camp, beach vibe, Cherry Pocket has a lot of Key West inspired dishes. For dinner, Linda remarked, “We prepare every dish to order. Our specialty is seafood and a lot of it is affiliated towards the Keys. We have a Key West Grouper, a Key West Fettuccini, a deep-sea grouper.” I was stuffed, and about to leave when Linda said, “Wait, you have to meet our mascot!” Rick Eten, the owner of Cherry Pocket had just pulled up with his pet macaw, Big Bird. Big Bird has his own perch outside near the deck that he sits on, but also likes to get down to walk around, socializing with guests, making sure everyone is having a good time. Whether you’re craving gator nuggets, a grouper sandwich, or even hot wings, Cherry Pocket is a winner. The atmosphere could liven up any wallflower and you’re sure to leave with a few good stories to tell. Linda concluded in a sincere, matterof-fact way, “The food is wonderful here and we treat everyone like family, there are no strangers here.” I came in a stranger and left as a friend, a friend with a happy stomach!

Silver Surf Gulf Beach Resort Situated on Bradenton Beach on Anna Maria Island, this quaint little resort is just under 2 hours away. If you’re looking for a quick getaway or even a long weekend retreat, Silver Surf is a great idea.

Longboat Key are a short drive away. Visit a museum or just go for a drive. Whatever you feel like doing that day, you can probably make it happen - or just stay at the beach and relax.

The resort is pretty old-school. At check-in, you’re given an actual key on a seahorse keychain to your room. Along with 2 chocolate chip cookies and a map of the island, you’re ready to start your adventure. The resort is small, only 50 rooms, so it’s very easy to find your way around. We ended up on the third floor and could see and hear the gulf waters just outside our door. The interior of the room is pretty simple, there’s nothing fancy about it. However they make up for that in cleanliness, the room was spotless. It comes complete with everything you might need including a kitchenette, dining table, couch, full bathroom and a comfortable bed. It’s perfect after a day on the beach and dinner in town. They offer a continental “grab and go” breakfast each morning, free for resort guests.

Rates start around $150 for this time of year. The same rooms can go for over $200 during peak season. There is no better time to have a getaway. And it’s only a short drive away.

Silver Surf guests get special access to the private white sand beach just across the street. From there, you can request a massage in the tiki huts on the sand for an additional charge. No need to drag chairs, you’re welcome to use the chairs and towels provided by the resort. Spend your day relaxing in the sunshine to the soothing sounds of the gulf. Or if you like a more active day, you can rent a jetski or other water sports equipment and play in the private waters of Silver Surf. Bring your own fishing rod and fish off the Bridge Street pier or charter a fishing trip. The resort also has a pool if you don’t feel like getting sand between your toes that day. A free island trolley passes right in front of the resort. The trolley picks up people approximately every 20 minutes and can take you to another part of the island. You can head on down to Bridge Street and have a casual dinner or a romantic night out. Families, young and old, large and small can find something that works for them. Play putt-putt with the kids or go shopping with friends. Grab a cocktail or watch for dolphins. You can even rent bikes, take a segway tour or rent a scooter to get around the island. Just don’t forget the sunset, you can’t miss the beautiful sunset over the gulf.

havenmagazines.com

If you’re up for a little road trip, it’s only a short drive off the island. There are so many options like horseback riding on the beach, the Mote Marine Aquarium, shopping at St. Armands Circle or you can take a day trip to Busch Gardens. Sarasota and 70
