The efforts at PortMiami to position the city as a global logistics hub are significantly underway. The Deep Dredge Project, which increases the water depth at PortMiami by 8 feet (42-50’) and enables the port to accommodate mega-capacity vessels, is scheduled for completion in mid-2015. The Panama Canal Expansion project will increase the capacity of the shipping route in Panama and will be scheduled for completion in 2016. These two events coincide in a way that could have a colossal impact for PortMiami in becoming a key favorite in receiving the increased cargo resulting from the canal’s expansion. The ramifications are monumental for the Miami economy as it vies to become a beneficiary of the increased international capital, goods and labor flowing via the canal—all key factors in any local economy’s real estate growth outlook. We discussed this project with Todd Michael Glaser, a renowned real estate developer in Miami and passionate advocate of Miami’s future growth prospects.

Currently goods are shipped into California from Mexico, for example. The port expansion ensures that goods are sent directly to the East Coast via Miami, as Miami is only one of two ports on the east coast that will be able to accept these supertankers for the next 24-36 months. This will eliminate shipment of goods into California for the purposes of future transportation of those goods to the East Coast. Haven: How confident are you that PortMiami will be the port of choice for mega ships as opposed to other ports such as Port Everglades?
