Last year, Djokovic defeated 2009 and 2013 Miami Open winner in Great Britain’s Andy Murray 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-0 for his fifth title in the event. Also in the field is 2005 and 2006 Miami Open champion Roger Federer, as the Switzerland native is in search of his first win in 2016. Several other top players like Federer’s countryman Stan Wawrinka, Spain’s Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer, and Japan’s Kei Nishikori are looking for their first victory in Miami. As for the American contingent, top players John Isner, Jack Sock and Steve Johnson as well as several others hope to become the first American-born winner of the event since Andy Roddick in 2004. On the women’s side, American Serena Williams is looking for her fourth straight title in the event and her
One player notably absent from the women’s draw will be Russia’s Maria Sharapova, who has been a fivetime runner-up in the event. The former No. 1 ranked player in the world announced on Monday that she tested positive for Meldonium at the Australian Open in January. Sharapova had been taking the medication for health issues since 2006 and the drug was added to the International Tennis Federation’s banned substance list at the start of the year. Sharapova did not know that the drug was banned and because of the positive test, she was put on suspension pending further investigation.
