THE HAVERFORD SCHOOL / AUTUMN 2013
Playoffs! By: Grady Nance
As we wind down through the end of the baseball season, with the Phillies disappointing us (once again), the World Series is just heating up. This series is going to be a battle of two superpowers in the flaming hot Red Sox, and the allaround incredible Cardinals. The Red Sox, shaggy beards and all, are young and full of talent such as Daniel Nava and Jacoby Ellsbury. As well as a young set of players, the Sox have an experienced pitching staff that kept the Rays and the Tigers bats quiet during their respective series. And, of course, they have the veteran presence of David Ortiz, who is still the consistent hitter he was years ago. But, the Sox lineup has been shaky at times, and they can either blow a game open, or get shut out by an average pitcher. The Sox have a good chance to win it all, but they have to keep their overall play consistent in every aspect of the game. Also, their offense has to show up, and not leave them on the big stage. If they can do that, they have a good shot at the title.
The Life of Dr. Nagl By: Samuel Turner Page 9
Representing the National League, the Red Birds are looking to prove themselves in October once again, after winning it all in 2011. The main power of the Cardinals is their pitching. With even more young talent than Boston in the pitching staff, the Cardinals have the closest you could get to a perfect starting rotation, with Adam Wainwright as their ace, followed by their two young talents, Mike Wacha and Joe Kelly. With a rotation like that, they could win the series, but I don’t think they have it in them. Their major playmaker of 2011, David Freese has been cold throughout October. Also, while the top of their order produces, the bottom third has struggled, and are struggling to find hits. If the Cardinals want to have a chance in this series, their WHOLE order has to hit and score runs, and the young pitchers have to keep up the work they’ve been doing.

New Line from BMW By: Stuart Berlinger
The price for the 8i is $135,925, limiting its availability to a small amount of people, but after the car grows in popularity the price will eventually lower. In contrast, the BMW 3i is significantly cheaper starting at $41,000. The new line of BMW’s could push the technology of hybrids and electric cars forward.
Recently, BMW has released a new line of futuristic cars to compete with other car companies like Audi and Mercedes-Benz. BMW’s new line includes the BMW 8i (right) and the BMW 3i (left). The BMW 8i is the companies first try at a plug in hybrid. The 8i has a top speed of 155 MPH and an amazing 58 MPG. The 8i has a small 3 cylinder engine, but the electric power makes up for it, clocking in at a total 123 horsepower. The 3i is a full electric small crossover unlike the 8i. The new design is efficient and creates new look for BMW. The 3i is completely emissions free and will be a popular car for city commuters and small suburban families.
Around the NBA By: Harrison Fellheimer
Are you ready for the NBA 2014 season? People all over the country are preparing to watch their team fight till the very end. There are some outstanding new college recruits that are trying to make a name for themselves in the NBA. It will be very interesting to see if the Miami Heat will once again win the Championship. The Sixers recruited Carter Williams who will improve the Sixers on the defensive end of the court. Losing two of their three star players, the Celtics still have high expectations to go all the way. This will be interesting as Rajon Rondo has looked very promising and full of potential during the preseason. This will be a very exciting and thrilling NBA 2014 NBA season.
Letter from the President By: Samuel R. Turner A warm welcome to everyone in the middle school. From roaming the hallways to standing in line for blackjack chicken, I have seen that this year is off to a great start! The 6th graders are adjusting quite nicely, and have developed positive relationships with their peers and teachers. The 7th graders seem to be ensconced in their respective classrooms and are diving into their studies and sports. Similarly, the
8th graders have settled back into the flow of school and into the seats of class. This upcoming year is definitely going to be the best and most exciting one yet. A piece of advice to each grade:
To the 8th Grade, Mr. Stroud belabors this point, and I want to make a note of it too. Time management is key this year to succeed and perform well. This is our last year of middle school, so carpe diem (seize the day).
To the 6th grade, the key to succeeding this year is doing your homework. We already have one Student of the Week from this grade, and I am expecting that there will be many more!
I also want to address the topic of the can drive. The very cans that you bring into school go directly to St. Barnabas, a local shelter. It would really mean a lot to contribute cans in the spirit of gratitude and Thanksgiving. Thanks guys!
To the 7th Grade, use what worked well for you last year and be sure to try your . best in class and on the field. This year is the hump-day of middle school, so just keep in mind that the end is not far, so make the best of it.

New Season of Family Guy By: Nick Biddle
Season 13 of Family Guy is back! The season premiere aired on September 29 and it was a big hit. In the season premiere, Peter finds a clue to a treasure, but he stupidly admits that he found the clue on TV. As a result, the whole town joins Peter in finding the treasure. On the second episode, Peter grows another head on his shoulder. Peter and the family are thrilled and overjoyed that Chip, the name of his head, is there. Unfortunately, Peter becomes annoyed of Chip, and attempts to get rid of him. This season is named “ the Greatest TV-14 Comedy Cartoon Show” according to Tv.com. If you don’t watch Family Guy, then you should definitely start watching it today.
Grand Theft Auto V Game Summary By: George Rengepes
As a lot of you know, the game GTA V came to us not too long ago. If you have played the game, you would see a lot of violence and hear much profanity. Everyone that plays GTA V does not care about those values and neither do I. The reason why most do not care for these negative drawbacks is because GTA V is a very awesome, heart racing, mind blowing video game. Not only do they have the normal GTA V, but they also have GTA V online multiplayer. This part lets you have 6 to 12 people in one world and you can do several new things from playing tennis to robbing banks. I would not recommend it to young kids who do not like violence, but since a lot of kids appreciate games with violence, then I would recommend this to the majority of the middle school. The features in this game are magnificent and I am looking forward to playing this game, possibly with some of you.
iPhone 5S v. iPhone 5C By: Robert Esgro Well, the rumored iPhone 5S finally came out. Not only that, but it came with a twin, too! Now that we’ve had over a month to settle in with the new technologies, we must make a decision: which phone is the best in overall performance. This article is for those who are going to go out and get a new phone or for those who are interested in Apple’s newest smartphones. You will read about the differences and the pros and cons between the latest two iPhones.
Cons of the Newest iPhones
The cons are that the iPhone 5C is basically just a colorful version of the iPhone 5, and it has trouble with WiFi. I would personally recommend the iPhone 5S because it is faster, more innovative, and sleek. Plus, you can get various cases in substitute for all of the iPhone 5C’s colors!

Dr. Who 50th Anniversary By: T.J. Brooks
11.23.13. The date of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special. For those who don’t know Doctor Who, it is british Sci-fi show about a time-traveling alien called the Doctor. On November 23 2013 the show’s 50th Anniversary Special will air on the BBC. In the special, we will see the return of one of the best companions in my opinion, Rose Tyler and also Meta-Crisis David Tennant from the end of season 4 who went to live with Rose. We will also see the introduction of a regeneration of the Doctor, played by John Hurt, but Who does not go back to that name. We will also see the current Doctor, Matt Smith, and his companion Clara Oswin Oswald, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman. It was also announced that the aliens in the 50th are the zygons, shapeshifting aliens, who were popular in the old series. Christopher Eccleston, the 9th Doctor will not be making an appearance in the 50th, and John Barrowman, who played Captain Jack Harkness, will also not be in the special. But there is still much to look forward to, so see you all on the 50th!
Samsung Galaxy Watch By: Robert Esgro Have you ever spoken to your wrist? Kinda weird, right? Not anymore, though. Samsung, one of the leading electronics manufacturer of the world came out with a watch that will change everybody’s perspective on futuristic electronics. It’s a watch. What’s the deal?, one might ask. Well, first things first. Just from looking at this watch’s picture (above), it doesn’t take a g e n i u s t o fi g u r e o u t t h i s m a r v e l o f technology’s abilities. This is the first wristwatch in the history of the universe to have WiFi, cellular connection, and Bluetooth. Yes, you read it right: cellular connection. For those of you who don’t know what it is, that is what cordless telephones use. Wait, wait, wait. How does this cellular connection and all of this cell phone mumbo-jumbo have to do with
this new watch?, you may be thinking. Well, this phone-watch works just like a Jawbone receiver. A Jawbone is a portable device that is placed inside the ear like an earbud. This watch can receive phone calls and SMS (Short Message Service) messages, just like a normal smartphone. Not only that, but it has a camera, and supports apps such as Evernote. Also, it comes with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for $299. And it comes in over 5 different colors. To conclude, this watch is an amazing piece of apparel. It’s not even high priced. It has WiFi, cellular connection, and Bluetooth. It can receive texts, make phone calls, take pictures and store data. And, it comes in over five different colors! How can you resist this great buy?

The Life of Dr. Nagl By: Samuel R. Turner Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, students and teachers, I have the honor today to present to you the life of our ninth headmaster, Dr. John Nagl. From growing up on Navy bases to becoming the headmaster of the Haverford School, Dr. Nagl has had quite an honorable and interesting life. Dr. Nagl was raised on several naval bases throughout the country including the state of California. Being the son of a Navy technician, Dr. Nagl always admired his father for his hard work and dedication. After he developed into a young man, he was accepted into West Point. He was awarded the distinct honor of being a Rhodes Scholar. He traveled to Oxford, Eng land and completed the rest of his education. From there, he joined the Army and bravely fought in two wars, one of which was the Iraq War in 2003. The experiences he encountered during the Iraq War have always remained with him. The one do-over in his life would have been being able to reverse any harm that came to any of the brave soldiers that fought next to him and for our country. As Dr. Nagl reflected through many different types of life experiences, he began to ponder of a time machine that could magically teleport him to the future. If he was in reach of one of these devices, he would surely transport to the future to see how society, relationships, cures, and technology have progressed. If he was not in contact with one of these machines, Dr. Nagl would certainly try to further develop his ideal superpower, teleportation, and visit the future through it. No matter if it was the past, present, or future, Dr. Nagl would first
grab a bag of delicious Lays potato chips, his all-time favorite food, while listening to the Rolling Stones, his favorite band. Dr. Nagl also loves spending time with the best thing that has ever happened to him, his son and wife. In addition, Sparky, the Jack Russell Terrier, and Maggie, the black lab, love going on long walks with him. He enjoys riding a dirt-bike or motorcycle with his son, Jack, a sixth-grader here, when he is not in the office. When he is in the office, Dr. Nagl is constantly working on important goals as headmaster of the Haverford School. He plans to continue our focus on the school mission, preparing boys for life. However, he wants to place a greater emphasis on the social, verbal, and relationship aspects of life. He also firmly believes in the school’s core values: respect, courage, and honesty. Displaying these values, Dr. Nagl led The Haverford School to victory on EA Day on his first year as headmaster. Congratulations on the win and a promising future at the Haverford School!

INK By: Cal Buonocore A world free of stress, a place where no one worries about what they look like, a place where you could truly find your true personality. That seems pretty good, huh? No bullying, no social hierarchy, no one trying to be who they are not. Going to school without the fear of messing up or being disliked. We want to end this, stop that fear, stop the bullying, and prevent all of that nonsense. If you feel the same way, come join us every Tuesday during lunch to find ways to identify the wrongdoings and fix them. As members of INK, we strive to make the school a racismfree and bully-less place. We emphasize on one
another’s strengths instead of exploiting their weakness. Our focus is to help others and make them feel comfortable. We discuss controversial current issues sometimes and always make sure to respect each other’s background and beliefs. INK stands for I’m Not Kidding, a representation of our strong focus on anti-bullying. INK is a great start to becoming a strong leader, a good friend, and a role model. Along with our weekly meetings, INK also hosts a regional day-long conference where several nearby schools including Shipley, Agnes Irwin, and Episcopal Academy come to our school and spend the day discussing various topics such as stereotypes and teasing. I guarantee that you will learn more about yourself and your friends and that you will be able to see another side of the world. So, please come join us in Mrs. Kettering’s room every Tuesday for INK Club!

Robotics By: Jeffrey Pendergast So far this year, robotics has been a blast! Head Coach Dan Troy and Assistant Coach Ms. Jacob have helped us learn the different bits and pieces used to build a robot as well as how to play this years game, Add It Up. During one of the last practices, we were assigned teams of three or four. Each team will work together and build the default robot, or as Coach Troy calls it “the General.” It is made by combining a touch LED, a gyro, a color sensor, and a distance sensor along with a pair or two of wheels and some connectors. Although we have only had five meetings, we have learned so much and are super excited to enter many tournaments! Wish us the best of luck!
Big World Project
A few samples of excellent projects:
By: Jacob Ireland The Big World Project was one of my first important projects of the middle school, so I didn’t know what was to come. However, once I started it, I realized that it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I actually sort of enjoyed it. I liked how the theme of the project was supposed to make us feel like we were making our own product and selling it to our country. It was a great imitation of the world of international business. Although, my partner and I did have a difficult time choosing a product to build. But, after we decided upon one, the rest of the project pretty much fell into place. Overall, I definitely enjoyed working on the Big World Project and learning about international problems and solutions.
