CROSMAN CHRONICLES THE HAVERFORD SCHOOL / SPRING 2015

Letter From the President by Jesse Goldman I would like to reiterate the great things which have been accomplished by us as a middle school unit this year. Firstly, over $1000 dollars were be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society non-profit organization through the penny drive this year. In the fall, the middle school had one of the most successful can drives ever. Also, the annual Martin Luther King Day day of service was extremely successful. With the help of schools such as Baldwin and Agnes Irwin, we made and packaged twenty thousand meals in about an hour and a half. The school store has had the most successful year since its founding. The people who ran it have done a great job, and the support from the student body has helped it grow. Our dodgeball tournament raised over two hundred dollars, and our charity donations on dress down days have been outstanding. We would like to thank the eighth grade for being the leading contributor in most of, if not all, of our charity events. To the seventh graders: if you do not know yet, student council election are coming up. It will be interesting to see who will step up and run for election. Letters of intent for campaigning are due soon, and campaigning starts shortly after. As we approach the end of the year, we also approach finals. The exams will begin the week after Memorial Day weekend. Now would be a good time to start organizing your materials from throughout the year. This way, you are ready to go when it’s time to reviews. It is never too early to start studying for finals. With this, enjoy the last month of school, and have a great summer!

Automotive Section The Ferrari 250 GTO per hour. That's quick, even by today's by Vincent Scauzzo The Ferrari 250 GTO is quite possibly the prettiest and most desired car ever made. Manufactured from 1961 to 1964, only 37 of these cars were ever built. Each car cost $18,000 at the time which is about $140,000 dollars in today’s money. Even then, the GTO was a very desired car. Some of you might be thinking, "This is an old car company; I want to hear about the new Lamborghini Aventador and the latest on Bugatti!" But did you know that one of them just sold at auction for $34.65 million? That’s at least $30 million more than any other modern supercar. The GTO has a 300 hp V12 engine. And because it weighs less than a ton, it can accelerate from zero to 60 in five seconds with a top speed of 170 miles

standards! And, like with most old Ferraris, it was used for racing. The car was designed in a wind tunnel. Its fuel tank takes up the passenger’s foot area and the trunk is used for the spare tire. Therefore, this car is not meant to be for familThe Independence Seaport Museum! The Independence Seaport Museum!y use, but instead a pure bred racing machine. Throughout the fifties and sixties, Ferrari made many 250 models. There was the 250 GT TDF, the 250 Testa Rossa, the 250 GT California Spyder, the 250 GT SWB Berlinetta, and the 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso. I love the 250 range, I've got models of three of them, but if I had to choose a favorite, it would be the 250 GTO.

The Philly Auto Show by Vincent Scauzzo The Philadelphia Auto Show is the place to go to look for new cars, good interiors, and fast rides. I was sent down there to look at some of what you might find interesting. Mini Cooper S: Let’s get one thing straight; the new Mini has the best interior ever fitted to a car. I sat inside it and the first thing I noticed was the start button. It sticks out of the center console so that you can push it down. It also glows red. There are two toggle switches on either side of the start button. It has the same toggle switches up by the sunroof so it makes you feel like you are operating the lunar module! The big dial in the center is gone from the previous model, the center console still has the circular appearance.  When you start the car the border of the circle glows the color of the car. Many complained about the leg room in the old Mini, but in the new model, it was exceptional. And once you fold the rear seats down, the trunk is a good size, as well. In fact, the only thing that changes in the S are the front seats. Because this is the S version, Mini provide you with some racing seats so that, when you are gunning down I-95 (and let's face it, you will be), you stay tight in your seat and fully in control. It does have some power, too. Where as the standard Mini only has 134 hp, the S has 189 hp and will do 146 mph! Not back for a little hatchback. You do have to pay a bit more for the extra power. I costs 24,000 dollars. I think that's okay though because with that is that quick and has that good of an interior, it is definitely worth it.

Ford Fiesta ST: Fast Fords have always been good and as far as I can tell, there are only a few things wrong with it. But we'll start with the good things. It has real racing seats, like the Mini. It has 190 hp and that's a lot in a car the size of a shoe. It is expensive for a small car. It costs 26,000 dollars and I don't think it's worth that much. The interior is a bit bland and it is dark in the back. The rear legroom is okay, but the trunk space is sad. A hot hatch is supposed to practical and fast. This is just fast. This car is more for driving, than all around use.

Honda Fit: The whole point of the new Honda Fit was for it to be spacious. And it is. The rear seats fold in many different ways so that you can fit just about anything in the back. The interior is nice, too. You can get a big touch screen for it with HDMI and USB ports. Those are useful for many things. One thing I found particularly interesting about the Fit was that it had a flappy paddle gearbox. For those of you who don't know what a flappy paddle gearbox is, there are two paddles on the back of the steering wheel. One shifts up and one shifts down. There is also no clutch pedal with a flappy paddle so you don't have to worry about damaging your gearbox. If you want to know how this car drives, ask Dr. Turner. She's got one.

Fiat 500 Abarth: Buongiorno! The once ‘little’ Fiat has been given a bit of a boost. It now has 160 hp, and that's a fair amount of power to put in a car that weighs about a ton. The little cinque cento has a very cool and smooth interior including things like exposed metal, with a retro horn. And here's a surprise, I can actually fit in the back seat! It has a small trunk, but then again it is a small car. There is one problem with it; the price. The car that you can put in your pocket costs 22,000 dollars. That's just too much for me.

Subaru Impreza WRX: When you want a hot hatch, you might as well buy a rally car! And that's what this Subaru is: fast. You may be thinking, ‘What do you mean? The Subaru STI is much faster than that!’ Compared to the STI, this car has a smaller turbo meaning it accelerates much quicker. Also, it doesn’t have a huge spoiler meaning it is much more functional as a personal vehicle. It also has a very impressive engine. We'll all be there. Just picture it, you're in the Upper School parking lot with your friends showing off each other's rides. You'll pop the hood on the WRX and you will be able to see all the engine parts. Then you'll ask your friend with diesel Civic to open his hood and all you'll be able to see are some plastic coverings and some boxes. It will be a good feeling for the WRX owner.

Kia Soul: It has love or hate looks and hamsters drive it, yes it's the new Soul. And first things first, it's a box on wheels. It's not very well trimmed and it does not have the best quality. It doesn't have much getup and go either. Only 164 hp and a top speed of 117 mph. But, on the inside, it is massive! There is so much space in the back that you could have a party! And, if you're just looking for something to drive around in, it is a good car for that. It only costs 18,000 dollars and for a car with such a big interior, I think it is definitely worth the money.

Chevrolet Spark: "Ahhh!!!! Every other car so much bigger than me, and they all steal my gas money!" At least that's what I think the little Chevy Spark would sound like, because this thing has character. Technically, this is a horrible car. It has just 84 hp and a top speed of 103 mph. It does 0-60 in 11 seconds. That is very slow. But what this car says to people is "I'm fun!" Look at it! It's cute, it comes in great jellybean colors, and the interior is great. It has exposed colorful metal, there's a good amount of legroom in the back, and the options are great, too! You can get an adjustable steering wheel and heated seats. Those are pretty impressive options in a little city car. This is a good first car because it's cheap, it has great gas mileage, and it says to people "Come on guys! Let's have some fun!"

Sports Section NFL Mock Draft by Samuel Reisbord

1st Overall (TB)- Jameis Winston QB He has great football IQ that can be likened to Peyton Manning and showed Brady like accuracy at the combine. He is primed to make a seamless transition to the pros and has experience under center. He has good weight transition albeit the one fumble vs. Oregon. His off the field issues shouldn’t halt his draft stock especially for a desperate Buccaneers team. I am worried about the availability of crab legs in florida. 2nd Overall (Tenn)- Leonard Williams DT He is possibly the greatest talent in the draft and can make an impact from day one. The Titans struggle in all sorts of ways but getting an impact defender is a good start. He is strong and athletic and can play both tackle and defensive end in a 4-3 defense. He plays with passion and has a strong leadership trait. 3rd Overall (Jax)- Randy Gregory OLB He is an athletic freak. The Jags need another tackle opposite Luke Joeckel but none fit the bill at 3rd overall. Gus Bradley loves raw talent and and a beefed up outside linebacker like Gregory would be a great addition to an already strong linebacker core. Paul Posluszny will be in Jacksonville through 2017 but they most likely want another solid starter opposite him. Injuries are a concern but Jacksonville has depth at the position. 4th Overall (Oak)- Amari Cooper WR Fast and creates separation. Oakland needs a solid staple at wideout and Amari Cooper is

their guy. Kevin White is also an option here. He is a threat over the top and fits the Oakland long pass scheme perfectly. He will work well with a strong armed quarterback like Derek Carr. His after the catch ability can be likened to Cordarrelle Patterson. 5th Overall (Was)- Shane Ray DE Athletic defensive end to improve the Redskins pass rush. High motor and pushes his way into the backfield. Needs better technique vs the athletic lineman in the NFL. Needs to build up strength in his hands. Explosive and has great first step. 6th Overall (NYJ)- Marcus Mariota QB Can everyone be quiet about the EaglesMariota rumors? Chip Kelly and Howie Roseman have both stated they are not going up to get him. They mortgaged the 2016 draft for Sam Bradford, resigned Mark Sanchez to a three year deal, signed Tim Tebow for a year, are hosting GJ Kinne, and let’s not forget Matt Barkley is the only quarterback Chip has ever drafted. That said, Mariota has never run an NFL offense. He consistently under throws receivers and his passes are slow and wobbly due to his terrible weight transition. His size and athleticism is an advantage but most likely won’t work in the NFL to the extent they did in college. He has never thrown into tight windows. The only time he played an NFL style physical defense was in the championship vs. Ohio State in which he looked terrible and thus lost 20-42. The Jets don’t have many options at QB considering they plan to make a run this year with the addition of Brandon Marshall.

NFL Mock Draft (cont.) 20th Overall (Phi)- Landon Collins S He kind of reminds me of Brian Dawkins in a way. He is a beast with the potential to turn one of our biggest weaknesses into a strength. He can play the run from day one. And he can probably develop into a solid cover corner as well. That said that's not the reason I think the Eagles will pick him. Without him we are completely screwed. If we don't pick him we have no guarantee Earl Wolff can stay on the field and that he's not the next Patrick Chung that tackles his own teammates. Who's after that? Jaylen Watkins or Ed Reynolds? Chris Maragos? It makes me cringe just thinking about it. Everyone has us projected to pick him, but then again I don't think Chip has done a single logical or projected thing he's come into power (and for that matter its working out quite well). You don't get a nickname like "Big Balls Chip" just anywhere. I wouldn't be surprised if we traded this pick along with Jordan Mathews in exchange for the second overall pick in my upcoming fantasy draft (but that's a story for another article). Sleeper of the Year- Bryce Petty QB: Poor-mans Marcus Mariota. Well rounded but took advantage of shotgun style high octane offense. His mechanics are weird from the waist down. Will need to adjust to NFL style offense and make throws in small windows that he didn’t make at Baylor. Other than that he is a naturally talented quarterback and athlete. Number three QB on my board. Similar talent but much lower of a price tag than Marcus Mariota. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Eagles got him. Durability is a plus. Enjoys throwing the deep ball with strength and accuracy. At times his depth perception came into question on long passes when he overthrew wide receivers.

Fantasty Football Mock Draft by Samuel Reisbord

7.) Andrew Luck - Indianapolis Colts QB
He lead the NFL in scoring for almost the entire season. He’s fantasy gold if you get him at the end of the first round.

1.) Le’Veon Bell - Pittsburgh Steelers RB
 Consensus first overall

8.) Rob Gronkowski - New England Patriots TE
If you have faith he’ll stay on the field don't hesitate to take him even higher.

2.) Marshawn Lynch - Seattle Seahawks RB
He was only third in scoring for running backs, but expect “Beast Mode” to still put up first round numbers. His touchdown numbers are ridiculous.

9.) Demarco Murray - Philadelphia Eagles RB
He probably won’t repeat so unless he falls into your lap at the back of the first round. Don’t take him first round.

3.) Matt Forte - Chicago Bears QB
Like Marshawn he only finished fourth in scoring among running backs but he racks up yards both in the air and on the ground. He should be highly touted in leagues that award points for receptions.
4.) Jamaal Charles - Kansas City Chiefs RB
He always gets overrated so I would advise not taking him. He is usually a less productive version of Marshawn Lynch.
5.) Aaron Rodgers - Green Bay Packers QB He got off slow but ended up being first in all of fantasy last year. Expect him to repeat.
6.) Lesean McCoy - Buffalo Bills RB
He may have slipped from first overall but McCoy is still a viable option for your number one running back.

10.) Eddie Lacy - Green Bay Packers RB
The only true Best Mode 2.0
 11.) Antonio Brown - Pittsburgh Steelers WR/PR

He really should be in the first round, but then there’s Gronk spikes and stuff.
12.) Arian Foster - Houston Texans RB
He had a weird year in 2013 but his 2014 campaign was good. He’s a fantastic number two back if you want him. I’d take him and Eddie Lacy any day.
 13.) Jeremy Hill
 Young and productive
14.) Demaryius Thomas - Denver Broncos RB
His value all depends on Peyton Manning. You make the call on that one.
 15.) Calvin Johnson
 One word...decline

16.) A.J. Green
 My sleeper of the year
 17.) Julio Jones
If you can’t get an elite running back you might one to take him or A.J Green higher.
 18.) Tre Mason
Similar to Jeremy Hill but with a bad offensive line and a failing team.
 19.) Jordy Nelson
 Aaron Rodgers number one target
 20.) T.Y Hilton
Expect him to have a pseudo-breakout year and some 30+ point games
 21.) Odell Beckham Jr.
 ODELL
 22.) Randall Cobb
It feels like for every 2 TD 130 yard game Jordy has, Randall has a 1 TD 100 yard game. Get him as a number two wide out if you can.
 23.) Brandon Marshall
 I’m predicting a regress.
 24.) Jeremy Maclin
Expect him to get a well-deserved third round pick. He’s money when he’s hot but if the Chiefs are shaky at quarterback his value might go down.
 25.) Alshon Jeffery
See Randall Cobb. I love Alshon and I think he will surpass Brandon Marshall

this year but it’s sort of the same scenario from a stats perspective. You make the call.
26.) Justin Forsett - Baltimore Ravens RB
Ray Rice is probably cursing somewhere.
 27.) C.J Anderson
Running backs tend to succeed when Peytons their quarterback. Don’t expect an exception to the rule. Don’t expect a first round number one back either.
 28.) Jimmy Graham
He lost his throne and scored about 44 points less than Gronk but hey, he was still third among tight ends.
 29.) Russell Wilson
This years quarterback class is very top heavy. Russell outscored the next closest QB by 20 points last season and is probably the last viable option at elite QB. The seventh round QBs just don’t cut it anymore. In my opinion the third round is the perfect round for quarterbacks. I said the same thing about Andrew Luck last year and look where he ended up.
 30.) Mike Evans
He’s the man in Tampa Bay and he’ll probably have Jamies Crab-Legs as his QB so who knows what he can do. He’s an unknown for now but expect him to make the leap that most wideouts tend to do in year 2.

Science & Technology Section Samsung Galaxy S6 by Evan Brabson Samsung is finally coming out with two new phones in the same family; the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge. This is a Samsung Phone that will produce some competition for the Apple iPhone 6 because this year because Samsung actually tried. First, lets look at what has changed from the Galaxy S5 to the Galaxy S6. The plastic cover is gone. This means no more waterproofing, you need a case. It is now metal and glass, like the iPhone. Samsung claimed the plastic was rugged and scuff-free, but the idea didn’t catch on. Samsung also got rid of two cool features, but for the better; the removable battery pack and the microSD. Samsung did this to improve the speed and performance. The microSD was a card to put in the phone to improve memory space and performance. I don’t think it will be that much of a loss, because it was compromised for speed, and with an optional 128 GB memory, there will be plenty of room for apps. Previously, I mentioned that the microSD slot was removed. Thankfully, we got an amazing processor in its place. It is a 64-bit Octa-core Processor. Yes, that means

having eight different processors. The result of having so many processors is amazing. The performance of the phone should be absolutely quick, with no lag at all. Samsung has always had big phones, and that legacy lives to be true in the S6. The screen is 5.1”. It’s not any bigger than the S5, however, but the screen is still bigger than the iPhone 6 by a healthy margin. It has a Quad HD Super AMOLED (ActiveMatrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) making this big phone have an excellent display. For every inch, there are 577 pixels, which works out to be a 2560 x 1440 resolution. The S6 Edge has the same display, but because of the curved screen, it has a dual-edge resolution.

Samsung Galaxy S6 by Evan Brabson (Cont. from previous page)

Just as most smartphones, the Galaxy has a front and rear camera. The rear camera is 16 mega-pixels. It isn’t really an improvement over the S5 camera, however, that doesn’t mean the camera is still really good. In fact, there was probably no reason to update it. The front camera is praised to be the best in class. The front camera is a 5 mega-pixel 120° angle lens. Finally, charging this large phone. There is the traditional microUSB slot for charging. There is also a wireless charging capability. The phone simply sits on top of the charger. Why would you do this? In just 10 minutes, you can get 4 hours of battery using this wireless system. There is also an Ultra Power Saving Mode. With this on, you can make phone calls and texts even when your phone is under 10%. It also starts shutting down certain apps, the internet, and games to save power, so this would be used if your phone was about to die.

The Future of 3D Printing by Alex Greer

Thirty years ago, the technology of 3D printing was thought of as science fiction. Today, the ability to design and fabricate an object seems commonplace. 3D printing is the process of creating an object out of a material by laying down layers of the object one at a time. The first 3D printers were originally intended to be a way of quickly manufacturing prototypes for new parts or devices. As time went on, 3D printing shifted from prototyping and moved more towards the production end of manufacturing. Even so, the personal use of 3D printers has greatly increased in this decade alone. Companies such as Makerbot and Cubify design and manufacture 3D printers that are compact and affordable specifically intended for home use. These printers are usually no more than a cubic foot, and have a wide variety of functions and uses. Users can choose from a huge amount from online databases such as Thingiverse, created by Makerbot. The objects can be downloaded and printed with the click of a mouse and the press of a button.

Although most personal uses for 3D printing are more for creating novelty items and knickknacks, the future of the technology might completely change the nature of commerce. Users may eventually be able to, instead of going to a store and purchasing an item, be able to buy a template of the item online and print it at home. This doesn’t only apply to household trinkets, it could be used for clothing, food, or even medical attention. As the technology of 3D printing advances, the range of usable materials increases as well. Companies have begun experimenting with using fabric as a resource from which to print. Scientists have even begun to use 3D printing as a way of healing flesh wounds. By using donated or grafted skin cells, doctors can 3D print the cells on burn wounds and heal the patient.

New 3DS Review by Lleyton Winslow

As you know, I am a huge Nintendo fan. So I ordered the Nintendo New 3DS before it came to America. This caused a problem, but I’ll get to that later. I had a lot of time to think of ideas for this review, so I hope you enjoy. The New 3DS is the newest edition of the 3DS line - 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS, and New 3DS XL. There are a flurry of new, cool features. First is better processing power which improves loading times, and game online connectivity. Second is the new ZR (Zed Right) and ZL (Zed Left) shoulder buttons. They also added Faceplates for the normal sized systems* which are interchangable cases the can go on the system. You can now take off the bottom of system so you can get a new battery, and Micro SD card, which they changed from the normal SD on the regular 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS. The 3DS OS, or Operating System remains the same so the menus, loading screens, and preloaded apps will be the same. But by keeping the OS, they kept region locking. Region locking is when a device is designated to a specific region. I have a Japanese New 3DS, so I am only be able to play Japanese cartridges and Japanese E-Shop (which is their version of the app store) games. Because of this, I automatically get games a few months earlier than other gamers in America and Europe do. The language for my system is automatically set to Japanese and is unchangeable. But I have previous experience with the 3DS, so it isn’t a big problem. Nintendo fans are getting angry about this! Hundreds of thousands Nintendo fans have signed a petition to end region locking. Hopefully this will change with Nintendo’s next system. Overall, I give the New 3DS a 8.5 out of 10! I highly recommend you get one, because this year is going to be a good year for 3DS games, with new Theatrhythm Dragon Quest, Xenoblade 3DS Remake, and Final Fantasy Explorers, and more!

*The normal sized New 3DS hasn’t come out in the US yet, but Nintendo plans to release it.

Plant Art

by Mr. Pankratz These are fictional potted plants sculpted from a single sheet of 8.5x11" card stock, glue, then a little spray paint to finish them off. The sixth grade were given the task to use the entire sheet when sculpting, limiting or eliminating any waste. The results are fantastic! You can view them all from the recess field on the art room windowsills catching some rays.
