Leader's welcome Welcome to the Autumn edition of Living in Havering – the last before the Christmas and New Year festivities. The Council that I am proud to lead has priorities that include: investing in our road and footpath network, supporting the local police service so that local residents feel safe in their homes and on our borough’s streets; building more affordable housing for local people with developments that are appropriate for our borough; and enforcing the rules and regulations that are there to keep our roads and parks clean and safe. In this edition you will see examples of work that is going on in all these areas plus on page 8 lots of useful information on a host of festive seasonal events that will be taking place around our borough. You can also read about our drive to recruit for volunteer governors for our local schools on page 29 and join in the celebrations of Towers Infant and Junior Schools celebrating their 50th birthday and Queen’s Theatre marking 65 years of great theatre in Hornchurch. Lastly, many of you will soon be honouring the sacrifice made by men and women who have served in our armed forces as we mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War on Sunday 11 November. Our striking cover image shows “Tommy” – a silhouette of a British soldier who fought in that conflict that has been touring our borough over recent weeks. Budget consultation update Many thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to our budget consultation that ran through August and September. 180 residents attended our 10 public meetings and more than 826 submitted responses online. A further 250 residents used the paper copies of the budget consultation questionnaire which were available from all libraries and the Town Hall. In addition there were over a thousand engagements on social media as residents commented The results are now being collated in preparation for a Cabinet Report that will be discussed at an Extraordinary Cabinet Meeting called to discuss the budget on Wednesday 28 November. Cabinet members will be asked to agree the updated Medium Term Financial Strategy covering the next four years, agree the schedule of savings proposals recommended for implementation in 2019/20 and future and agree financial decisions “positive years, required to balance the 2019/20 dialogue” budget. This meeting will then pave the way for the Council’s 2019/20 Budget setting meeting on Wednesday 20 February 2019. Cabinet Member for Finance and Property, Cllr Roger Ramsey, pictured above, said; “I’m delighted we’ve had a really good response rate, as well as some very positive dialogue with residents at the public events. The outcomes of the consultation will now be collated and will support the Cabinet in the difficult decisionmaking around how to balance the Council’s budget over the next four years.”

Recognition for a quality service

Havering Volunteer Centre, based in High Street, Romford was given national recognition for the quality of the service it provides when it recently achieved Volunteer Centre Quality Accreditation from the National Council for Voluntary Organisations. Commenting on the accreditation Shelley Hart, the CEO of the Havering Volunteer Centre said: “We are especially thrilled to gain this external recognition of the great work that our team is undertaking, particularly in these difficult and testing times both in terms of funding and the increasing demand on our services. ” In September the Centre held a ceremony attended by the Mayor of Havering, Cllr Dilip Patel, to unveil a plaque marking this national recognition. Among the volunteers attending the event was Julie Tripp from Rainham. She’s an administrative support volunteer working at the Volunteer Centre’s offices in Romford. “I went back to volunteering to regain the confidence to get back into work after suffering from Deep Vein Thrombosis” said Julie. “Volunteering has given me the confidence to become one of the organisers of the Libra Club, a club in Rainham where women get together and socialise that has been so successful it now has 50 members and a waiting list to join.” Cllr Viddy Persaud, the Havering Council Cabinet Member for

Veggie Run, the first council-created gaming app in England, aimed at educating children about dodging unhealthy foods, has linked up with the West Ham United Foundation. The project will deliver the healthy Hammers programme to 2,400 children over a six-week period at over half of Havering's primary and junior schools throughout the academic year. To officially launch this collaboration West Ham United Football Club will host 10 lucky primary or junior school pupils at their stadium on 7 November. Pupils will also receive a free West Ham home football kit printed with a Veggie Run character, shin pads, and a full stadium tour. Since the partnership was announced the innovative app has two new exceptional players on the leader board. Hammers’ players Adrián and Arthur Masuaku had a chance to play the updated version of Veggie Run. After avidly playing the game

and seeing the benefits for children in Havering, Masuaku encouraged children to choose a healthy school lunch. The defender challenged pupils: “Is your score on the leader board?” he asked. Pupils need to keep playing Veggie Run to be in with a chance of winning West Ham United Foundation Soccer schools vouchers, and eat a healthy school catered lunch for the possibility of winning signed West Ham memorabilia.

International Day of the Disabled Person

To mark this year’s International Day of the Disabled Person Havering Council is linking up with the Salvation Army in Romford to put on a day of talks and demonstrations designed to help disabled women, men, and young people in Havering experience the same sense of freedom and inclusion as nondisabled people. The event held at the Salvation Army in the High Street Romford on Monday 3 December will help identify barriers to that freedom and be informed by the experiences and aspirations of local disabled people. Speakers from Havering Council will explain what Council services are doing to help disabled people across a number of areas of the Council’s work including services for children, housing and public health. Other speakers from Transport for London and the Fire Brigade will focus on how disabled people can use public transport in Havering and stay safe in their homes. Cracking down on criminal landlords

Action to crack down on landlords operating inadequate and dangerous living conditions in Housing of Multiple Occupancy (HMOs) has resulted in the issuing of £261,750 in penalty notices to criminal landlords. Between March and September of this year, the Council’s enforcement team has:

The Council’s Landlord Licencing Scheme, which started in 12 wards across the borough earlier this year, requires private landlords of HMOs to apply for a licence. The scheme was introduced to tackle the poor management of private rented homes, overcrowding and anti-social behaviour. To date 143 licence applications have been made. Landlords of properties that have five or more occupiers in two or more households now need to have the mandatory HMO licence, a regulation that came into force on 1 October 2018. Enforcement action by the Council will check to see 10 | November 2018 | LIVING in Havering

those landlords are licensed and if not, are served with a financial penalty notice for up to £30,000 or face prosecution. On a visit to a property in Hornchurch in August, an unlicensed HMO in poor condition was found being let out to multiple families. The three-bedroomed house had no heating, inadequate fire safety escape exits, faulty electrics and a staircase in dangerous condition amongst other areas that breached regulations. Financial penalty notices were served on the property manager and the Council’s officers have offered housing advice to the tenants. Cllr Viddy Persaud, Cabinet Member for Public Protection and Safety, said: “Our Landlord scheme is successfully rooting out those landlords that think they are above the law. We won’t tolerate these landlords taking advantage of local families and individuals by providing overcrowded and poorly maintained properties. We also won’t stand for landlords not having the correct licences. Our officers will continue to be proactive to make sure tenants are living safely in private rented accommodation. Landlords of HMOs that breach the regulations must be aware that we will use the strongest possible action against them every time.”

Enforcement officers from Havering Council passed CCTV footage to the Environment Agency and Metropolitan Police which helped to prosecute a man who was found dumping waste on private land in Romford. Cllr Osman Dervish, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "This is a great example of the Council, police and Environment Agency working in partnership to crackdown on fly-tippers and ensuring we take the strongest possible action against them.

One of the main priorities for Havering Council is keeping residents safe. To prevent crime and the threat of crime, your Council works in partnership with many other organisations to carry out the work that needs to be done. The Metropolitan Police is one such organisation that the Council works closely with on a daily basis and the two have a goal of making sure the borough is safe to live in, work and go to school in, and enjoy leisure activities. The two organisations want residents to feel secure as they walk in the street night or day and tackle issues to ensure that anti-social behaviour is dealt with as quickly as possible. Recently, the Council supported our local police officers, highlighting the work being carried out against knife crime in the borough. Cllr Viddy Persaud (pictured above), Cabinet Member for Public Protection and Safety, joined Detective Superintendent John Ross from East Area Police which covers 12 | November 2018 | LIVING in Havering

Havering, at Romford Police Station where a special bin has been placed at the front office of the station in Main Road where knives can be surrendered and binned anonymously by the public. This had followed a visit from the Met’s Commissioner Cressida Dick and the Violent Crime Task Force, who teamed up with local police and Council officers for a high visibility patrol in Elm Park, resulting in arrests and the seizure of street weapons and drugs. There are also regular link-ups with counter terrorism officers.

Visible presence The Council and police team up for a number of early morning operations around the borough, including helping rough sleepers and tackling anti-social behaviour and offering a visible presence which reassures the public. Other joint operation work has included the continued development of projects at night and through the early hours. The Safe and Sound Partnership includes a youth bus which is often stationed in town centres on Friday evenings, supported with a police presence and members of the Council’s community safety team. The bus is somewhere for young people to get advice and support. Cllr Persaud said of the partnership: “It is vital we work together

r to combat crime

with our local police to ensure our residents can enjoy a safe borough. We have a good working relationship that allows us both in our respective roles to keep improving that. Havering is and continues to be one of the safer boroughs but both ourselves and the police remain vigilant. We will tackle the issues that residents report and anti-social behaviour that makes people’s lives a misery, won’t be tolerated.” Police officers also join the Council’s public protection and licensing officers on visits to properties that are suspected to be unlicensed Houses of Multiple Occupation. The Council looks to take action on those landlords who are not complying with regulations and are providing less than adequate living conditions and the police presence helps to tackle any antisocial behaviour as well as making sure that those living there are reassured.

Clean-ups Other areas of work that the partnership lends itself to include clean-up events where fly-tippers have dumped rubbish and this has led to anti-social behaviour, visits to local businesses to take action against those who sell knives and alcohol to those under age, and the annual Junior Citizen initiative. Junior Citizen was created in order to educate young people at a crucial point in their educational and social development right before they move into secondary school. This year, at

sessions led by the Council, police, London Fire Brigade and other organisations, pupils from schools across the borough looked at challenges related to hate crime, drugs awareness, knife crime, littering, road and transport safety.

Advice Occasions such as the first Pride event which took place in Romford in the summer, saw police and the Council join up to give support but also provide reassurance with their presence. Other community events such as the recent Safer Neighbourhood Board day in Romford Market at the end of September, got residents, volunteers and community groups talking with the Council and police about getting advice on how to deal with or report criminal activity including burglaries and cold-callers. Detective Superintendent John Ross said: “There is a long established practice of partnership working with Havering Council. – that partnership expands with us also both working with other emergency services, voluntary sector, community groups and the public directly. “It is proven to be essential if we are to tackle the issues causing harm in our communities, issues that impact on the residents of the borough. Our determination together to protect the vulnerable and make Havering a safe place to live, work and visit is shared across all of us – we are focused on a common goal.” www.havering.gov.uk/living | November 2018 | 13

Investment in roads & pavements

Better roads, better

Havering has the second largest highways network in London. 740 kilometres of road and nearly 1,070 kms of footways must be maintained but with budgets tight, it is critical that the funding allocated for improvements and repairs to our roads and footways is spent in the most effective way to get the maximum overall benefit to road and footway users across the borough.

£3.2 million commitment The highways capital spending programme was approved in September with a commitment to spend £3.2 million during the current financial year.

Minimising disruption There will undoubtedly be disruption to residents in roads where work is being carried out and disruption to journeys made by residents and visitors around the borough. The aim is to keep this to a minimum. Notice will be given ahead of works so residents can make alternative plans if they need to while the job is being carried out.

Annual Surveys One of the key strands of the investment in roads and footways programme is to proactively resurface roads and pavements before they reach a state where emergency repairs are required. The locations in the borough identified for surfacing works are prioritised according to data collected from the United Kingdom Pavement Management System (UKPMS) condition surveys undertaken of every road and footway in havering which is then verified by Havering Council officers. This data is then fed into a software program called “Horizons” which identifies and prioritises highway maintenance schemes and most importantly determines the cost implication of various treatments that could be used. Further annual condition surveys will help determine the levels of funding will be required in the future to keep roads and footways up to standard. Despite tough financial constraints the Cabinet agreed that to not invest in our highways this year would result in more costly future repairs and pose potential safety risks. Half of the budget will be spent 14 | November 2018 | LIVING in Havering

on footway resurfacing and the other half on road surfaces. Commenting on the decision, Cllr Osman Dervish, Cabinet Member for Environment, pictured above left, said: “The Council wants residents to feel even more proud of where they live, work and go to school. Not only are these works designed to make the area look better, they will also improve safety, for both pedestrians and drivers.”

12 Estates Residents have been having their say on two of the borough’s biggest regeneration projects. At a number of consultation events, people were given the chance to view designs, meet architects and share their views on the joint venture partnership between the Council and Wates Residential to redevelop 12 Council estates, creating 3,000 new homes. The first phase of the work will include the Waterloo Estate in Romford, Serena, Solar and Sunrise Courts in Hornchurch, and Napier and New Plymouth Houses in Rainham. Cllr Damian White, the Leader of the Council said: “We are keen to get the views from as many residents and local businesses as possible as we aim to deliver genuinely affordable homes and increased social housing, but most importantly thriving communities. "This joint venture with Wates Residential will allow us to deliver more job and career opportunities, better infrastructure, and great places for people to live, work and visit.”

More than just bricks & mortar Our new feature looks at the benefits of regeneration, going beyond just homes and business. In our first instalment we catch up with James Rogers, 21, a student at Havering College. He’s just started an apprenticeship with Clarkebond, one of the engineer companies working on the 12 estates regeneration project. James is one of two students given the chance to pursue their ambitions and dreams of a career in design, thanks to the opportunities created through Havering Council’s joint venture with Wates Residential. What originally interested you in this opportunity? “The apprenticeship interested me, because at college I learnt how to use CAD (2D and 3D computer-aided design software) and it was one of my best subjects as I enjoy both computers and engineering. After researching Clarkebond online, I thought it would be a really good opportunity to learn more about CAD and develop my skills.” What are you most looking forward to about your apprenticeship? “I'm really excited to be developing my skills with CAD and working on different projects with Clarkebond.” What new skills do you hope to learn? An artist's impression of the Bridge Close development alongside the River Rom.

Bridge Close At the Brewery, Romford, residents have also been given a first look at plans to transform Bridge Close, an area of Romford within the ring-road. The Council has entered into a joint venture with First Base and Savills Investment Management to deliver new homes, workspace, a new school and health services for Romford. The plans also include a new pedestrian bridge with direct access to Romford station and the revitalisation of the stretch of the River Rom so that it can be enjoyed by the whole community.

“I would like to learn more about building design using CAD software as I previously have been taught to use it for small objects but haven’t had much of a chance to use it for bigger designs.” What do you hope to do in the future? “In the future, I would like a career in design and to continue using CAD and exploring its potential.” Nine local students from Havering College have also been offered work experience placements at companies working on the joint venture, including global engineering firm Aecom and architecture firm JTP. As the 12 Estates scheme develops, Havering Council and Wates Residential will continue to work together to unlock meaningful opportunities for local residents.

Romford Market is one of the oldest Charter Markets in the country. As with many other markets and retailers around the country the growth in online shopping is putting pressure on the future success of this vibrant and important part of Romford and the borough’s heritage. A customer survey about the Market that was carried out last year and interviewed more than 3,000 people showed that there was support for live music, street art, children’s activities, and regular programmed events. In response Havering Council is planning to hold a series of events and activities to support the traders in the Market Place. Following on from the Halloween Spooktacular last month there will be one main event each month with additional regular street entertainment and childrens' activities on the weeks immediately before and after the main event. The programme of events will complement the events previously organised during the holiday season by the market’s team, such as funfair rides during the Easter holidays.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the Armistice at the end of the First World War. Havering Council is supporting a campaign called ‘There But Not There' that will see large six foot high silhouettes of a British soldier from the First World War placed at locations across the UK to remind people of the enormous sacrifice made by servicemen and women in that conflict. In Havering you will be able to see one of these ‘Tommy’ silhouettes at many locations across the borough until the end of the year. A plaque will be placed alongside the silhouette explaining the campaign. ‘Tommy’ has been on display in various locations around the borough and will also be present at the main Remembrance Sunday service in Coronation Gardens, Main Road, Romford on the morning of Sunday 11 November and later that day at a special event in Havering-atte-Bower. That evening a beacon will be lit at the highest point in the borough as part of a national chain of more than 1,200 beacons called ‘Battle’s Over’ – a tribute to the millions who were lost or who participated in the war.

These Remembrance Sunday parades, services and events will take place in Havering on 11 November:

Elm Park The two minute silence will be observed at 11am in Maylands Avenue outside the Royal British Legion, followed by a parade to St. Nicholas Church where there will be a service.

Harold Hill The two minute silence will be observed at 11am at the war memorial, followed by a service at St. George’s Church Centre.

Harold Wood A short service will take place at 10:50am at Memorial Hall before a parade to St. Peter’s Church for a service.

Havering-atte-Bower Battle's Over: a Nation's Tribute. A Beacon of Light will be lit on the green in front of St. John the Evangelist Church at 7pm.

New memorial in Harold Wood A brand-new war memorial has been unveiled in Havering. Located outside the library in Harold Wood, the new monument was officially inagurated at a ceremony attended by the Mayor of Havering and local councillors.

A parade commencing at 10:15am will make its way along Hornchurch High Street to St Andrews Church where a short outdoor service and wreath laying ceremony will take place. This will be followed by a service in St. Andrew’s Church.

Rainham There will be a parade from Rainham Working Mens’ Club at 10:30am, followed by a service at the war memorial.

Romford A parade will start at 10:30am in Western Road, followed by a service at 10:55am in Coronation Gardens.

Upminster A parade at 10:40am from the Royal British Legion will be followed by a short service at the war memorial in Corbets Tey Road. For more information on Remembrance events taking place across Havering, and locations where “Tommy” can be seen, click online.

The Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch celebrated its 65th birthday in style in September with a 70s themed fundraising event and by scooping an award as UK Theatre’s Most Welcoming Theatre in the East of England. Artistic Director Douglas Rintoul said: “We’re delighted to win this award for the third year in a row. Thanks to our teams and everyone who voted. After 65 years of providing entertainment for the people of Havering and surrounding areas we have now set ourselves the goal of reaching out to many more members of our community who may not have previously felt able to visit the theatre. We’ll be doing that by offering a more diverse programme, special ticket prices for under 26 year olds, relaxed and dementiafriendly performances, more audio described performances and £1 tickets for first-timers.”

Over 200,000 people visit the theatre each year and the theatre's team also run a variety of projects in the community In order to keep the Queen’s Theatre alive as a safe and environmentally friendly space well into the future, a number of new projects have been announced for 2019 under the QNew banner. The opening production is Philip King's farcical comedy, See How They Run. 1953 The Queen’s Theatre Club is founded, initially as an Amateur Dramatic Society. They spend time with supporters and staff and are entertained with a performance of The Lost World as well as songs from Our Day Out, performed by the theatre's young company. 2011 The Queen's Theatre production of Richard O’Brien’s world-famous musical The Rocky Horror Show is a huge hit and becomes the theatre's most successful production. 2014 Artistic Director Bob Carlton's final production at the Queen's Theatre after 17 years is his Olivier award-winning musical, Return to the Forbidden Planet. 2018 Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is seen by 13,302 people and generates 30 percent more in sales than the theatre’s previous front runner, The Rocky Horror Show. Cllr Robert Benham, Havering Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Learning, is urging people with a spare room to consider becoming a foster carer. He recently met up with foster carer Linda Norman to find out what it involves.

“It's amazing what transformation can take place when you give someone a safe home and loving family” A series of life’s challenges led Linda to fulfil one of her ambitions to foster a child in need of a loving home. Fostering was something she had wanted to do since she was young, but the 57-year-old said she didn’t think she would be considered because she’d been divorced and was a single mum. However, it wasn’t until five years ago when she had a sense of peace in her home that she really considered doing it. Linda now fosters teenagers. “I’ve had three teens of my own and three step teens and really enjoyed being with them at that age. Teens also fit in with our lifestyle as I work part-time and so does my son. He is not the other carer but more like a big brother to them and he helps me a lot. “The 15-17-year age group breaks my heart as they have often been crushed and devalued by life’s circumstances and you just want to restore a sense of self-worth in them. As a foster carer you have to look past any negative behaviour to see what is

If you live, work or attend full time education in Havering and are interested in the performing arts then you should know that there are performance opportunities throughout the year with Fairkytes Live, in Hornchurch. Fairkytes Live hosts many community events including open mic nights, Havering’s Voice singing competition, and ’Battle of the Bands‘ for youths and adults. These community events are open to all aged 11 years and older and there is no upper age limit. The only requirement is that the content is family friendly. The venue is wheelchair accessible. The aim of Fairkytes Live is to provide local performers with an additional performance platform, whether they are beginners, regular performers or looking for extra experience beyond their regular training. It’s free for performers to take part, they just need to register in advance. The ticket price for audience members is £6 plus a booking fee in advance, or £8 on the door. The evenings make a great night out giving audiences the chance to see the local talent that Havering has to offer. “absolutely excellent” Havering College recently re-opened their restaurant and invited local dignitaries and residents to sample the food, and the service, provided by first and second year students at the College’s Quarles Road campus. NVQ Level 1 and 2 students studying hospitality services and the preparation and cooking of food attended to guests as they tucked into a British Isles themed menu. Dishes on offer included mushroom tartlets for starters, fish and chips and Bakewell tart for dessert.

To give students as close to real-life experience as possible the college’s Jubilee restaurant is open for lunch to the general public on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays during termtime. It is also open for a fine dining experience on Thursday evenings. Festive lunches and dinners will be served from the 4 to 20 December. The Mayor of Havering, Cllr Dilip Patel, who was one of those dignitaries attending said: “It’s good to see the restaurant open again. The menu and service were absolutely excellent.”

The cold and damp weather, ice, snow and high winds can all aggravate any existing health problems and make us more vulnerable to respiratory winter illnesses. But there are lots of things you can do to stay well this winter.

Keep your home at 18oC (65oF) or higher if you can. Wear lots of layers of light cotton or fleecy fibres.

Keeping active keeps you warm. When you’re indoors, try not to sit still for more than an hour. Get up and walk around, make yourself a warm drink and spread any chores throughout the day. Chair-based exercises and simply moving your arms and legs and wiggling your toes are helpful if walking is difficult.

Brian Davy Brian Davy wanted to put something back into his local community and he felt that becoming a school governor was a way that he could do that. 27 years on, Brian, a former airline accountant, is still a governor. He’s chair of governors at Hilldene Primary School, Harold Hill, and was a governor at Crowlands Primary School, Romford. “I was influenced by a dedicated governor at Hilldene. My children were at the school and I would attend parents' meetings and ask questions. I was invited to think about joining the governing body. “something to be remembered forever” Two schools recently celebrated 50 years of teaching Hornchurch youngsters. Towers Infant and Junior Schools in Osborne Road and Windsor Road respectively, first opened their doors to pupils in September 1967. The culmination of a year-long celebration was ‘1967 day’ held on 22 June. Pupils and teachers came to school dressed as if it was 1967 and they had a day of lessons and activities using the 1967 curriculum. Whiteboards were replaced by blackboards, children had maths lessons using pounds, shillings and pence and there wasn’t a computer or iPad in sight. The next day an Exhibition Day and Summer Fete was held with a display of school photos from 1967 to current day as well as resources and artefacts from the past 50 years. Staff were on hand as tour guides so past pupils could take a trip down memory lane. Outside, there was a Swinging Sixties theme to

events that included a live band playing all the hits from ’67 and a ‘Beat the Goalie’ game with ex-West Ham footballer Alvin Martin whose grandchild attends the school, as well performances by school choirs, dance troupes and gymnastics teams. Sarah Meacher, the Head of Towers Infant School said: “ I’d like to thank the parents association ‘FOTFA’ and all the parents, grandparents, staff and friends who gave up their time so generously to help prepare, set up, run stalls and clear away. It was the most incredible celebration and something to be remembered forever.” Originally, Towers Infant School was a two form entry school. It had a central hall with six classrooms in pairs leading from small foyer areas from three of the corners. In 2013, the school expanded to three form entry, in order to help to meet the increased demand for school places, and it now has a purpose built Early Years building, bringing the total number of classrooms to nine. The school shares a site with Towers Junior School, separated by a sizeable field. An eclectic mix is always on offer in ‘the village’ The village, as Hornchurch is affectionately known, offers an eclectic mix of exceptional independent shops, high street retailers, restaurants and pubs and has an impressive cultural offering through Fairkytes art centre, Langtons Gardens and Queen’s Theatre. Representing the interests of businesses in Hornchurch is the Hornchurch Town Team. They meet regularly to promote the high street, organise community events and to work effectively with Havering Council to improve ‘the village’. Working in partnership We recently submitted an application to the GB High Street Awards. Unfortunately we were not shortlisted, however, our hard work was recognised by the shortlisting panel and we were given a ‘special mention’ on the GB High Street awards website, so we were one of the 80 high streets out of 240 to be mentioned. In August, the team developed their first Summer Fayre and launched the new brand for Hornchurch via a range of media and branded merchandise. It was a huge success with many traders taking part with fayre games, music or stalls outside their shops. It raised the profile of the town and created a real buzz and community spirit. The next event will be the Christmas Cracker on Saturday 17 November, 11am - 5pm, culminating in the Christmas Lights Switch On. There will be entertainment throughout the day, games and rides, and a very special ‘Santa’s Grotto.‘

Investing in skills Further funding for CEME

In September, SEGRO announced that it will be providing further funding to the Rainham-based Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence’s (CEME) Gateway to Skills programme, for the current academic year. SEGRO provided CEME with £35,000, taking the total invested in the programme to £105,000 over three years. The Gateway to Skills programme provides an introduction and awareness to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects at local schools in Havering, Newham, and Barking & Dagenham – the boroughs that are part of SEGRO’s East Plus scheme. The additional further funding will benefit 500 secondary school students who will attend ‘taster days’ at CEME to bring to life STEM in a fun and engaging way. Supporting young people to develop their employability skills and improve their skills and education is important to us
