Love the App and report to us! Reporting fly-tipping and litter has been made easier for residents via the Love Havering App. The app is part of the Love Clean Streets initiative, one of the UK’s leading environmental reporting service. It was launched by the Council to help improve efficiency and effectiveness for residents to be able to report but also for it to resolve issues including fly-tipping, litter, dog mess, graffiti and the reporting of dead animals for removal. Residents can download the app onto any mobile smartphone or tablet and the issue will be sent straight to the service team in the Council to deal with. A report needs to include a photograph of the issue and brief details.
Once a report is received through the app to the Council, a confirmation message will be sent that it is in progress and is being dealt with by officers in the relevant service. Once the issue has been resolved, those who have reported it, will receive a message to show that. Here’s how you download the Love Havering App: • The App is designed to work with your My Havering account so you can view and send your reports via the phone or the website. • If you already have a My Havering account you should use the same email address to register the app. If you haven’t an account, you can set this up by visiting www.havering.gov.uk.

A Fanntastic opportunity
Bedfords Park in Havering-atte Bower, part of the Land of the Fanns
If you are involved with a community project that needs some funding then you should read this.
The Land of the Fanns Landscape Partnership Project’s Community Grant fund is again open for applications. Grants of up to £5,000 are available for local groups to run environmental or heritage projects within the Land of the Fanns area that covers large parts of Havering including Bedfords Park and the Ingrebourne Valley. Groups in these areas can apply for a grant to run a project within the area which meets one of the aims of the Landscape Partnership Project. These are: conserving and enhancing the historic and or natural landscape of the area; helping people learn about and enjoy the heritage or landscape of the Land of the Fanns; or involving the local community and volunteers.
Never forgotten Havering’s 2020 Holocaust Memorial Service will take place on Sunday 26 January. The service will be held at the Holocaust War Memorial in Coronation Gardens, Main Road, from 2pm. Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2020 marks 75 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The theme for HMD 2020 is Stand Together.
Projects awarded grants
Projects which have so far been awarded grants include planting an orchard and creating a dipping pond at a school, bat monitoring, installation of an interpretation sign and supporting the development of a new heritage museum. Drapers’ Maylands Primary School in Romford was a successful applicant in Round One of the Community Action Fund. The school’s outdoor learning area was transformed by the Thames Chase Conservation Volunteers. The Community Action Fund enabled the school to create a living science area where children will learn about habitats and wildlife in their own school field. The Thames Chase Conservation Volunteers, aided by children from the school, created a pond, decking platform, seating area and study table. The Havering Wildlife Project also received funding from the Community Action Fund to help protect and restore the bat population in Thames Chase Community Forest. The grant awarded was used to pay for training in bat handling and equipment to monitor and record the bats. This is the fourth round of applications and runs until 31 January 2020. One last round will occur in March 2020. All projects funded by the scheme must be completed by September 2021. More information about how to apply for the Land of the Fanns Community Action Fund can be found on their website or by calling 01708 642950.

Poppy appeal stands to attention Havering’s Poppy Appeal was launched at the Town Hall for the first time with the unveiling of a poignant poppy installation created by Havering Council, schools and local community groups. The unique art project involves six wire sculptures of soldiers, covered in handcrafted poppies, in all shapes and sizes, and placed in blankets of red flowers lining the entrance to the Town Hall. Local schools were involved, with Redden Court School,
Whybridge Infant School, St Alban’s School, Parklands Junior School, RJ Mitchell School and the Hornchurch Sea Cadets, all creating and donating poppies. Avelon Road Centre, a day centre for adults with learning disabilities, supported the installation by making poppies. Meanwhile, children’s centres around the borough produced poppies, created from recycled plastic bottles donated by the Sapphire Ice and Leisure Centre. After a period on show in front of the Town Hall the wire soldiers were then displayed in local libraries.

The Havering Literary Festival
The Havering Literary Festival returned to the borough earlier this month, with almost 1,000 tickets selling before the festival began. Taking place between 4 and 23 November, it boasted a fantastic array of award-winning and internationally acclaimed writing talent who took part in the festival, inspiring a love of reading in libraries across our borough. Hugely successful authors like leading travel writer Simon Calder and queen of crime drama Martina Cole took part in the almost three-week festival, along with Sunday Times bestselling author Christy Lefteri and Scottish writing talent James
Oswald, who launched his new book at a special event during the festival. There was plenty for children and schools to enjoy too, including award-winning author Sally Nichols, who hosted pre-school and baby bounce sessions throughout the festival. School pupils were also able to enjoy two leading children’s writers/illustrators, as well as other sessions across the three weeks. The festival saw communities across the borough come together to enjoy reading–through meeting their favourite authors and inspiring a new generation of younger readers.
The Mawney Foundation School would like to invite prospective parents/carers of pupils commencing Reception in September 2020 to visit our school on Thursday 5th December 2019, at 6:00pm. There will be an opportunity to tour the school, as well as meet the staff, governors, Executive Head teacher and Head teacher. If you have any enquiries or would like to attend the open evening, please telephone the School Office on 01708 741612. We look forward to meeting you.

Mark Knife and youth crime remains a critical issue for young people in the borough
”
Sila Urgulu (left) and Emily Thompson, members of the Youth Parliament are pictured at the elections
Tackling knife and youth crime is the most urgent issue facing young people in Havering, according to a new youth consultation. More than 11,000 votes were submitted by young people from Havering in this year’s UK Youth Parliament’s Make Your Mark Campaign. The world’s largest youth consultation, saw schools, colleges and youth organisations, have their say about the issues that matter to them the most. As they did in 2018, local young people said knife and youth crime was once again their number one concern, followed

They were also asked to vote on specific issues they felt the Youth Parliament should be campaigning on UK wide in 2020. Protecting the environment, tackling hate crime and votes at 16, were their top choices, with knife crime, mental health and curriculum for life. The issues were then taken to the Youth Parliament in the House of Commons this month and the outcome is expected to be announced after the General Election. Two members of Havering’s Youth Parliament attended the vote. Youth Parliament member Sila Urgulu said: “It was an honour to represent Havering at the UK Youth Parliament House of Commons sitting and extremely interesting to hear opinions from all over the country on matters that affect young people most. All of this on top of the opportunity to attend Parliament made it an amazing experience.” Youth Parliament member Emily Thompson added: I had a great day debating and networking with fellow MYPs from across the UK. it was a great opportunity to provide a voice for the young people of Havering as well improve my public speaking skills.” Robert South, Director of Children’s Services, said: “Knife and youth crime remains a critical issue for young people in the borough. Across the Council we’ve been working hard to prevent knife crime and to educate young people about the dangers and risks. We’ve run workshops to show them how to stay safe and we’re continuing to work closely with the police and other partners.

Could you be a foster carer?
“
There are some amazing people out there Angela, Havering social worker who could be a role model
We’re not looking for superheroes, just ordinary human beings, the Council’s fostering team told Living in Havering when we spoke recently. There isn’t a mould or an ideal person, but as Nicola, a social worker on the foster care team, says: “We want people to rule themselves in, instead of out.” People sometimes decide not to come forward because of their life experience, age or background, but if you’re interested in fostering contact us first and we’ll look into your eligibility, as potential foster carers, come from all backgrounds, says Nicola. The Council is constantly searching for local residents to put themselves forward to provide a loving and stable home life for some of the children currently in care. They range from siblings and babies to teenagers and unaccompanied minors. Fellow social worker Angela adds: “We’re looking for people who can provide a family home where a child in care can reach their full potential and have an opportunity that they may not have in their birth family at the moment. “There are some amazing people out there who could be a role model and a voice for a child who may not have had this before. “Some of these children have not been a priority in the family for a number of reasons. Perhaps their mum or dad have other children or they may have been misusing substances.
”
Because of this, there is an ongoing need for people to come forward and become a foster carer.” The team is constantly looking for novel ways to reach people and have run advertising campaigns, held stalls in shopping malls, attended shows and visited supermarkets to attract potential new people. They also run monthly drop-in events in Havering Town Hall in Romford on the first Thursday of every month between 6pm and 7.30 pm. Once a person comes forward, staff will assess them by finding out more about their lives and visiting their home, which also gives them a chance to meet other family members, if they have them. Once agreed, they receive full training and meet current foster carers to find out about their experiences and ask any burning questions. Once approved, the foster carer will be given plenty of information and support, says social worker Sunil, who also assists with recruitment. They will be appointed with their own social worker, have 24/7 support and be invited to be a part of Havering Foster Carers Association, which is a family of foster carers who provide support and social activities for each other. Sunil said: “We want people from all walks of life, as they might just be what one particular child is looking for.” For more information please call 01708 434574.

Take Care
of Yourself this Winter
The NHS is warning that cold weather can be seriously bad for your health. That's why it's important to look after yourself, especially during the winter. If you start to feel unwell, even if it's a cough or a cold, don't wait until it gets more serious. You can call the NHS helpline by dialling just three numbers on your phone – 111 Or go online to www.111.nhs.uk and follow these simple steps: 1. Answer questions about your main symptoms 2. Find out when and where to get help 3. Be contacted by a nurse, if needed If you have difficulties communicating or hearing, you can: • call 18001 111 on a textphone • use the NHS 111 British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter service if you’re deaf and want to use the phone service
Get a Flu Jab If you’re aged 65 or over, are pregnant, have a long term condition such as heart, kidney or respiratory disease, or severe asthma, you can get a FREE flu vaccination from your GP or local pharmacy. See www.nhs.uk/flu for more information. If you are not eligible, you can still get one from a pharmacy costing between £7 to £13.
Keeping Seasonal Coughs and Colds at Bay Ask your pharmacist what medicines should be in your cabinet and how to help you and your family get through the winter season. Many over-the-counter medicines (including paracetamol and ibuprofen) are available to relieve symptoms of common winter ailments such as cold, sore throat, cough, sinusitis or painful middle ear infection (earache). Always seek advice from your pharmacist at the first sign of a cough or cold before it gets more serious. Keep medicines out of the reach of children.
Stay warm It is also important to keep warm in winter – both inside and outdoors. Keeping warm over the winter months can help to prevent colds, flu and more serious problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression. Heat your home to at least 18C (65F). You might prefer your main living room to be slightly warmer. Keep your bedroom window closed on winter nights – breathing cold air can be bad for your health as it increases the risk of chest infections.
Stay active Keep active when you're indoors. Try not to sit still for more than an hour or so. Wear several layers of light clothes. They trap warm air better than one bulky layer.
Stay informed Make sure you're receiving all the help that you're entitled to. Learn how to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating and keep up with your energy bills at www.gov.uk/phe/keep-warm . And check your heating and cooking appliances are safe. Contact a Gas Safe registered engineer to make sure these are operating properly. www.havering.gov.uk/living | December 2019 | 11
Stay
greener this
Christmas Don’t let it go to waste – use the power of frozen
Freeze cooked turkey and ham and thaw in the fridge to use in casseroles, curries, pies and sandwiches. Leftover party food such as sausage rolls, mince pies and quiches can also be frozen to be used in packed lunches for when you return to work or school.
Compost at Christmas Remember - you can compost over a third of the everyday things you throw away, including vegetable peelings from your Christmas roast.
Cut the wrap Wrapping from Christmas gifts and more leftover food than usual during the festive time, can lead to an increase in the amount of waste we have to collect. You can still enjoy all the fun of Christmas and indulge, but at the same time play your part in helping us to minimise waste and recycle more. By making small changes, such as freezing leftovers and planning meals, you can save on your weekly or monthly food bill as well as help to cut the cost of the borough’s waste disposal, which last year totalled just over £16 million. Here are some handy tips on how you can reduce food waste and step up your recycling:
Love your leftovers They’re one of the delights of Christmas so go to www.lovefoodhatewaste.com for lots of tasty recipes using your leftovers from the delicious meals you have cooked over the festive period.
Christmas creates mountains of plastic packaging and wrapping so why not think outside of the box this Christmas? Gift experiences such as theatre or concert tickets and meal vouchers are just some of many presents that don’t need wrapping. Or think green, by giving something that is reusable?
If you do have to wrap: • Avoid metallic or plastic coated paper – it can’t be recycled • Remember to squash packaging down as much as possible so you have plenty of room in your orange sacks • Break down cardboard boxes and if necessary leave them next to your orange sacks for collection Collection dates for waste and recycling will change over Christmas and New Year – please see the revised schedule on page 6.
Working in a winter wonderland
We’re ready for winter, whatever the weather. Our fleet of salting lorries are on stand-by should snow or ice arrive – to keep the roads clear and keep the borough moving. We also have a snow plough ready to clear roads, while the street cleansing team will do their best to keep pavements and bridges as clear as possible during colder weather. We’ve got: • Five gritting lorries on stand-by • 2,000 tonnes of salt in our depot – enough to grit up to over 380 miles of roads and sufficient for almost three weeks of continuous snowfall and a back-up supply if needed • A team of winter heroes on-call 24/7 including weekends.

Havering Council’s Trading Standards team is urging residents to take extra care when buying online and to be wary of fake goods as they look for that perfect gift for family and friends this Christmas.
Here’s your Christmas stay safe guide: safety •Product Product safety Be aware when purchasing Christmas lights and electrical goods. Always ensure the product has the CE mark and the manufacturer’s identity. Make sure they have a 3-pin plug and instructions/ warnings. •Toys Toys Look for CE marking and manufacturer’s identity, which should be on all toys, from large toys to small 'stocking fillers'. Instructions for use and the ageappropriate warnings should also feature with the product.
Fake goods Many goods, from perfume to computer games are cheaper online or at markets, but beware of fake products. Counterfeit goods including DVDs, clothing, electrical goods such as hair straighteners, jewellery and children’s toys, may appear to be a bargain, but often are not. A sign that a product is fake is the poor quality. Purchasing fake goods, even unwittingly, means you could be supporting criminal activity.
Buying online In most cases when you shop online or via a mail-order catalogue, you have the right to cancel your order and receive a full refund. This is in addition to your normal statutory rights. You would have 14 days to cancel, but make sure to print and save details of your order including reference number. Also, keep details of the trader/company name, address and contact numbers/email addresses. Havering Council’s Trading Standards team work closely with National Trading Standards Safety colleagues to prevent illegal and unsafe goods being imported into the UK. Recently, officers helped to stop 13 batches containing around 16,295 novelty lights being imported. None of the lights had any details of the manufacturer or any instructions or warnings to enable safe use and tests indicated there was a potential risk of an electric shock if used. In addition over 2,000 LED lights which plug directly in to the mains were identified as
Beware of fake websites that often look like they are real, particularly when ordering designer goods. Seek advice on how to check if the site is genuine. Useful websites and contact numbers: i www.havering.gov.uk/tradingstandards i www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer - you can also call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06 www.getsafeonline.org/connectedchristmas
being unsafe after being tested. All lights found to be unsafe were either destroyed, or sent for modification to ensure they could be correctly labelled and instructions included. Havering has two transit hub sheds in the borough – which are used for inland clearance of items imported from outside the EU via Tilbury, Essex. Hubs like these are where National Trading Standards refer products to, to determine which products need to be looked at further before they are deemed safe. www.havering.gov.uk/living | December 2019 | 13

Don’t
be lonely this Christmas
The Council’s John Green talks about overcoming loneliness and the support available. It’s classed as the most wonderful time of the year, but for some of our older and more vulnerable residents, it can be the loneliest time of the year. Last Christmas, research by Age UK found that more than half a million older people across the UK were expecting to be lonely at Christmas and that many hadn’t sought any help. It also found that Christmas wasn’t something they were looking forward to because it brought back memories of people who had passed away and of happier times. John Green is head of Havering Council’s joint commissioning unit which works with local partners to ensure services are in place to support older and vulnerable residents. He explains how the Council is geared up to help older people keep themselves happy and upbeat at this time of the year. Q - What kind of support is available to older people in Havering who might be lonely? A – We carry out approximately a million home visits every year to our older residents through care agencies. We know from the comments we receive from older people that this service is highly valued; not least that it gives the opportunity for a chat with carers. There is also an active and lively voluntary sector in Havering that offers a lot of support. The Council works with a range of voluntary agencies to provide services that are intended to address social isolation in one way or another and some of these are detailed opposite. Q - What can be done to combat loneliness? A – We can all play a part in helping people to overcome isolation and loneliness – check on a neighbour, say hello in the supermarket, etc. For family, friends or for older people themselves, look at websites to see what help is available. There are a lot of groups designed for just the purpose of bringing people together. We have seen 16 | December 2019 | LIVING in Havering
people who were formerly isolated take the leap of joining a group and finding a new circle of friends that has transformed their lives. Q - What are some of the highlights happening at this time of year? A – All organisations and groups tend to put on Christmas celebrations and events. For example one of our services is the Havering Carers Hub, which supports people who care for loved ones, and they are putting on a range of events, including a Christmas Party. They are included in the organisations listed opposite. Q - Where can you get help and support? A – I appreciate that not everyone is able to get out and about so there are services which older people can access online or over the telephone. It’s also worth checking out local churches and community centres to find out what events they have coming up. Many host Christmas meals and festivities, so ask a friend or family to help you find out more. Have a look at some of the organisations listed opposite, and if you feel they are relevant, contact them for advice and guidance on how you might join in with their activities and events at Christmas and beyond.

Should the weather drop below zero overnight, emergency shelters and hostels will be made available by Havering Council as part of its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) which means that that no one needs to sleep rough on the streets of Havering. The emergency shelters and hostels are geared up to offer food as well as providing rough sleepers with advice, care and access to longer term accommodation, minimising the chances of them returning to the streets. If you spot someone sleeping rough, let the Council know so that they can provide support. Howard Swift, Head of Economic Development at Havering Council writes… We had a very successful evening at the Havering Chamber of Commerce Business event at the end of October at Queen’s Theatre. It was great to meet and talk to many borough businesses about their priorities and how the Council can help achieve those aims. A real highlight for me was meeting the wonderful Neave, who came to the event with her Mum, Lisa Cable, who owns Radfield Home Care Havering and provides services to people in their own homes across Havering. I spent some time talking to Neave about her mum’s business and her plans to be a future Havering business owner. 18 | December 2019 | LIVING in Havering

Developing students’ talent and employability Drylining experts Measom have joined up with NCC Havering Colleges Construction Centre in Rainham to boost employability by offering taster courses and beginner Drylining courses for students in a unique, newly-constructed training area. Measom Managing Director Andrew Measom said: “This is a ground-breaking partnership which is giving us the exciting opportunity to educate young people in a trade that is not typically offered at colleges. Drylining is a modern-day plastering but it is an undervalued trade in the industry. The reality is, however, that there is a lucrative career in drylining where specialists can earn up to £50,000 a year.” Andrew went on to explain that the construction industry is in the middle of a revolution where ipads are replacing architects’ drawings and super technical equipment is now commonplace on sites. The new courses at Rainham will start next year and will be short six-week courses taught by a Measom specialist. The successful students will be offered an interview giving them the opportunity of an apprenticeship with Measom where they will work with experienced dryliners on live projects.
Students putting their learning into action Colin Seabrook, Head of Department for Construction & Building Services for NCC Havering Colleges, said: “The construction industry is ever-evolving so we need industry experts working in the college with us. The partnership with Measom is really exciting for us. It will help us reach young people who are interested in a career in construction and it offers the college access to a major local and national employer.”
