Welcome to the Summer edition of Living in Havering, and my first as Leader of your Council. I am honoured to take on the role. Thanks to everyone who voted in May. You can see who was elected to represent you on page 24. My priorities, and those of the Cabinet that I will lead over the next four years, will be to use the latest technology to deliver ever improving services and value for money for residents; to invest in our road network and improve the borough’s transport infrastructure; to support our local police service to provide frontline community policing; to lead a drive for more affordable housing for local people, to ensure that new schools and health facilities are included as part of any new development; to support our vulnerable and elderly residents; and to build on the success of the recently opened Sapphire Ice and Leisure in Romford. Pupils from local schools report on the improved rail connections we will soon enjoy on page 26 and you can read on page 20 all about the biggest event in the borough as the Havering Show celebrates 40 years of free entertainment.

Heads up on school leadership

A Rainham school that the schools inspector, Ofsted, in May 2017 said “required improvement” has a new leader. Will Thompson has been appointed to the position of Principal at The Brittons Academy and he’ll take up the post this September. Previously he was the Headteacher at The Forest Academy in Hainault for eight years and oversaw that school’s progression from 'Special Measures' in 2010 through to its current rating of ‘Good’ by Ofsted (2013 and 2017). Mr Thompson said "I genuinely believe that Brittons is a school that has the potential to be great. Everyone I have met has welcomed me warmly and shares my passion to make Brittons even better." Mr David Forster, Chair of Governors, said in welcoming the new Principal "Governors believe we have secured a proven Principal who can make Brittons a very good school for all its students".

The Mayor cuts the ribbon

Mawney Foundation School in Romford was officially opened at the end of April following a complete rebuild that allows the school to cater for more pupils with much improved facilities, including allweather outdoor sports facilities. The then Mayor of Havering, Cllr Linda Van den Hende, performed the ribbon-cutting in front of all the pupils gathered in the main hall along with representatives of the Education Funding Agency, Havering Council and the construction firm, Bowmer & Kirkland. The school has expanded this year from a two form entry to a three form entry school. By 2024 the school will cater for 630 pupils compared with 480 now.

Focus on Feathering Each year some of the 2,500 trees on the pavements and verges throughout Havering start to produce shoots near the base of the tree known as “feathering”. These shoots can lead to problems such as growth over pavements and roads, causing trip hazards. The main trees which require feathering are limes and acers. Over the last couple of months Havering Council has been running its annual feathering programme to remove this growth. Affected trees will be re-inspected in October so that any further shoots can be removed before winter sets in.

Mill Milestones

Restoration works on the windmill are progressing well. Over the last couple of months the millwright has been working on the repairs to the cap frame in his specialist workshop in Holland. When it’s completed it will be

Weeding our way around the borough S.H Goss & Co. Ltd treats weeds on the highway on behalf of the Council. They have a programme of ward-based work that will continue until November. All visible weeds are treated by a chemical that will eventually kill most common weed species. It can take up to 21 days for a weed to show signs of die back. Some weather conditions such as rain and extreme heat can make the chemical ineffective, impacting the schedule. However, the contractors aim to complete four sprays in eight months.

Rogue landlords fined £126,500 for poor housing conditions Since March Havering Council has issued £55,000 in penalty notices to rogue landlords across the borough. The Council’s Landlord Licencing Scheme, which started in 12 wards across the borough earlier this year, requires private landlords of homes in multiple occupancy (HMOs) to apply for a licence. The scheme was introduced to tackle the poor management of private rented homes, overcrowding and anti-social behaviour. A landlord was served two fixed penalty notices totalling £20,000 for operating an unlicensed HMO in serious disrepair in Rainham. The property had no heating, exposed electrical wiring, and a dangerous outdoor staircase, which lead to the roof and acted as an entrance to the property. Cllr Joshua Chapman, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Rogue landlords in Havering are now receiving significant financial penalties for failing to obtain a licence for their HMOs. Everyone in Havering has the right to good quality housing and irresponsible landlords with overcrowded or poorly maintained properties, are no longer tolerated. We are being proactive in dealing with this issue and are pleased with what we have achieved so far, but there is much more to do! Landlords of HMOs should take note and get a licence now to avoid such financial penalties.”

Fusing creative skills

An ambitious project for performing arts and creative media students to link up with a school in Indonesia is underway at Havering Sixth Form College in Wingletye Lane, Hornchurch. Titled Island Fusions, the initiative will create the opportunity for a cross-cultural exchange between the Havering students and talented young dancers, musicians and theatre performers from the High School for Performing Arts in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. To mark the start of the project, the Cultural Attaché from the Indonesian Embassy, Professor Aminudin Aziz, visited the College at the end of April. It’s hoped the students from Indonesia will visit the UK for three weeks later this year and will work with Havering Sixth Form College students, attending lessons in music, dance and drama. The visit will culminate in a public performance event.

Supporting our men and women in uniform Hundreds of Havering residents turned out to show their support as the borough marked national Armed Forces Day on Saturday 30 June. Shoppers and residents packed Romford Market Place and South Street to watch the parade, led by the Royal British Legion Band and Corps of Drums Romford and featuring soldiers from the Parachute Regiment. The Officer Commanding B Company 4 PARA Major Charlie Turner said: “It was again a privilege for B Company to participate in the Romford Armed Forces Day parade and to take the chance to further strengthen our ties with the local community. Our detachment based in London Road, Romford is steadily growing in size as we welcome a steady influx of new volunteers along with a number of ex-Regulars transferring to the Reserves.” i www.havering.gov.uk/news

The soldiers of 4 PARA, have just taken part in a two week intensive training exercise in South Wales designed to enhance and develop the infantry skills and marksmanship of the soldiers in order to enable them to fulfil their role as the designated reserve component of Britain’s high readiness force, 16 Air Assault Brigade. Over the past six months, members of the Company have deployed on exercises with their regular force colleagues to Jordan, Belize, Germany and Kenya, along with a multitude of professional development and career courses. 4 PARA are currently looking for new recruits in the 18 to 34 age bracket. During April and May Havering Council worked with a company called Granicus to ensure that all email addresses held on our database of subscribers to our email bulletins were compliant with the new General Data Protection Regulation that came into effect across the EU on 25 May. The new regulation is designed to protect the privacy of citizens and residents and more than 55,000 local residents have now opted to receive email bulletins from Havering Council. Bulletins range from updates on travel issues in the borough, to news of initiatives to keep Havering clean and green, to updates targeted at the local business community. Looking after your money

Under pressure It’s been well documented in recent months that local authority budgets are under severe pressure. According to Richard Watts, the Chair of the Local Government Association’s Resources Board, town halls are facing a funding gap “in excess of £5bn a year by 2020,” and that they will be forced to make “difficult decisions about how best to use resources to support services and protect public assets.” Havering has always prided itself on sound financial management and in February this year agreed the budget for the current 2018/19 financial year. The then Leader of the Council, Cllr Roger Ramsey said at the time: “The 2018/19 budget proposals seek to balance the Council’s budget which is required by law, but also protect frontline services for residents.”

Financial Strategy Following the Council elections in May the new Cabinet is now reviewing Havering’s Medium Term Financial Strategy (MTFS) that covers the next four years. This is against a backdrop of a dramatic reduction in the amount of revenue Support Grant that Havering Council receives from central Government as the chart to the right shows. This reduction has occurred at the same time as demand for council services has increased due to a growing population in general and in particular an increase in the number of elderly and very young people in the borough. With education, housing and social services accounting for around three quarters of all of the Council’s spending any increase in demand for these services, shown as service provisions in the chart to the right, puts added pressure on the Council’s financial resources.

The Council is determined to set a balanced budget for the next (2019/20) financial year and to have a strategy in place for dealing with the gap over the next three financial years that the MTFS has identified. As part of its consideration of the savings and charges required to do this the Council will be seeking your views on what the Council should prioritize when it spends its money and where it should look for savings. We want as many people as possible to take part so in addition to the opportunity of expressing views by responding to an online survey, there will also be paper copies of the budget consultation available to pick up in all local libraries and from the Town Hall and a series of public meetings shown in the table below. In addition you’ll have the chance to have your say at the Havering Show over the August Bank Holiday weekend. The survey will be live on our website throughout August and September for you to complete and give your views.

Care for carers Havering Council has launched a new support service for carers living in the borough. Based at Community Reach House in the High Street, Romford the Havering Carer's Hub offers support to carers of adults with mental health issues, dementia, learning disabilities, physical disabilities and frailty. Carers can use the Hub as a central point of contact for all adult carers in the borough. Services provided include advocacy, emotional support, dementia services, social activities, training, specialised peer support groups, telephone support and advice. for Adults Care Services and Public Health, said: “Through launching the Havering Carers Hub we aim to support as many carers in the borough as possible. The Council understands the daily challenges many face and recognise the contribution carers make to loved ones, friends or neighbours but we know they also need a support system in place.” Frank Bullock, aged 91, is the main carer for his wife, who suffers from dementia, said: “After visiting the Carers Hub for the first time, I felt so much better for their wonderful support, and look forward to attending the dementia support group in the borough, run by carers for carers. Meeting other carers like me, who have similar situations will help me to not feel so alone.”

News Capable cadets Many young people and adults miss out on challenges and adventures that could transform their lives. Joining the Army Cadets has changed that for many Havering youngsters. They have participated in rock climbing, quad bike racing, canoeing and many other activities and courses which focus on developing the next generation of leaders including, bizarrely, herding sheep! Each year the Worshipful Company of Woolmen continue the ancient tradition of herding sheep back and forth over London Bridge. Havering cadets including Sophie Abbott and Courtney Martin-Gannon were privileged to escort Freemen of the City of London in relays across the bridge. At the end of a very busy day the cadets were given the opportunity to herd the sheep - an honour usually only given to Freemen.

Getting their hands

As a youth organisation sponsored by the Ministry of Defence, the Army Cadets have strong links with their adult colleagues. Havering cadets recently worked with the Queen’s Guard at the London Regimental Parade. Cadet Julie Bennett from Harold Hill said: “It was the best day ever. We were able to go into the guard area and felt like celebrities as tourists took photographs because we were in uniform. We even got to wear the bearskin hats.” Julie Bennett describes how she went from sitting on the couch to adult volunteer when she joined the cadets: “I turned up at the cadet training centre with no experience of Army Cadets. The volunteers showed me how to use my skills to assist the next generation. I was given all of the training and support Julie Bennett required. Now, for a few hours each week, I teach and inspire cadets to achieve their best, even when out of their comfort zone”. Volunteers are essential to cadet success and progression. The Council’s Chief Executive, Andrew Blake-Herbert, (left of picture) and Director of Neighbourhoods, Steve Moore, (wielding the pickaxe) were joined by a team from Wates Residential – the Council’s partner for the regeneration of 12 of our local estates – as a number of Havering’s housing schemes benefitted from a major week-long volunteering event led by the developer. More than 30 staff from Wates Residential swapped their day jobs to spend time volunteering to support local residents in Havering as part of the company’s ‘Reshaping Tomorrow Week’ in June. In total, three flower beds and three raised vegetable patches were built and planted at six locations across the borough, including at sheltered schemes, temporary accommodation facilities and homeless hostels.

News Footballers score a fundraising A group of friends from Romford have scored an award from charity Diabetes UK for raising £25,000 for diabetes research. The college friends who live in and around Romford and used to play for Cromer Park Football Club, get together for an annual fundraising event and have won an Inspire Award in recognition of their fundraising efforts. They stage an annual family day in memory of team member Matthew Sell, who had Type 1 diabetes and passed away in 2002. Royal visit to Havering’s jewels

Havering welcomed His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent on Tuesday 12 June and showed how the borough is flourishing in business, heritage and leisure. His Royal Highness visited Coborn Engineering, Langtons House and Gardens and the Sapphire and Ice Leisure complex. At Coborn Engineering The Duke was given a brief introduction to the company by management and staff. He was then given demonstrations of their work, including design and machine fitting. At Langtons The Duke was told about the history of the Grade II Listed 18th Century House and landscaped gardens, which

acts as the borough’s register office for birth, deaths and marriages as well as hosting wedding ceremonies. The final stop of the day was at the borough’s newly-opened Sapphire Ice and Leisure, where he was given a tour of the leisure facilities and ice rink, before unveiling a plaque to commemorate the official opening of the centre. Councillor Dilip Patel, Mayor of Havering said: “We were privileged to have His Royal Highness here to see one of our jewels, Langton House and Gardens and to take an interest in one of our thriving local businesses, in Coborn Engineering. We are thrilled that he agreed to officially unveil the commemorative plaque at the Sapphire Ice and Leisure.”

Celebrating the royal wedding People all over the borough threw themselves wholeheartedly into the spirit of the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday 19 May. There were four street parties organised across Havering in Crescent Avenue, Farnes Drive, Edward Close and Petersfield Avenue/ Fairford Way, with hundreds attending and enjoying the glorious sunshine, good food, drink and community spirit. The market had festivities from 10am until 4pm, with stilt walkers, balloon animals, a spot the Royal hunt for youngsters and more. Our libraries got in the swing of things holding special art sessions for children to design their own crown and putting up royal displays in celebration.

As the sun shone down, Saturday 19 May was not just the big day for Prince Harry and Meghan. While Windsor Castle was the focus of the nation’s attention, Langtons hosted several weddings that day, and Living caught up with a few of the couples who shared their special day with the Royal family.

Jamie and Sharifa met on a dancefloor in an Essex nightclub over 12 years ago. They told us “We got engaged on the same day as Harry and Meghan and booked 19 May forgetting it was the royal’s big day – it’s been a nice way to get into the wedding spirit! “We picked Langtons because it’s a beautiful setting, close to home and our friends that have got married there have had lovely weddings. “We are taking time to plan our honeymoon, but very likely to be in the United States and Barbados.”

Emma and Louise, who went on a family holiday, then Las Vegas for their honeymoon, also decided on Langtons because of its wonderful grounds. “We booked our ceremony before the Royals and were worried ours might be overshadowed.” “But, sharing our anniversary with the Royal couple will highlight ours too, making it feel even more real.”

Claire and Lewis, who plan to go to Vietnam for their honeymoon later this year met on Match.com. Claire said they picked Langtons because “We wanted a registry office local to where we live in Brentwood and Langtons is by far the most picturesque with lovely grounds, so it was an easy decision. “We are pleased to share the day with them, it is a funny coincidence and I’m hoping it means my husband doesn’t forget our anniversary!”

The Havering Show is the borough’s biggest free event and takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, Sunday 26 and Monday 27 August 2018. This year the Show marks its 40th anniversary and celebrates music from the four decades in which the show, has been running. Counting your votes

All votes were counted at Hornchurch Sports Centre Havering went to the polls on May 3 to elect the councillors who will represent you over the next four years. 134 polling stations were open from 7 in the morning to 10 at night and 70,801 people took the opportunity to cast their votes. More than seven hundred staff were required to run the polling stations during the day and count the votes during the night at Hornchurch Sports Centre. Who was elected is shown on the following two pages. After the election a new administration was formed. The Cabinet members are shown on page 25. Key committee positions were also filled following the Annual Council Meeting held on 23 May and details of them, and of the six Member Champions whose role is to represent those groups in Council discussions and represent the borough in meetings with organisations involved in the area they champion, can also be found on the Council’s website.

Youngest and longest-serving The Council elections in May saw a raft of new faces elected plus the return of some long-serving Members. The youngest councillor elected was Tele Lawal representing the Heaton ward. New to the Council she’s just 22 years old and lives in Wrexham Road, Harold Hill.

Tele explains why she decided to stand: “If there's something I hate the most, it's feeling helpless and powerless. I decided to look at various ways to help people and found politics was the most effective way to change lives and shape communities.” “I aim to work with other councillors to champion residents’ opinions and make a real difference to the quality of their daily lives and prospects. Housing, crime, children services, equality and diversity are key areas for me and where I want to the make the most impact.” Since the election Cllr Lawal has been appointed to be the Council’s Member Champion for Equalities and Diversity. When not representing her residents Tele works as an External Communication Assistant at Metro Bank. She enjoys fashion and finds it’s a great way to express herself. “It shows people who you are before you even speak” she says.

Representing Upminster ward Cllr Linda Hawthorn from Cedar Gardens in Upminster is now the longest continuously serving councillor following her initial election in May 1990. “I was very surprised back in 1990 to be elected, but soon started to find it interesting and rewarding, and to enjoy helping my residents.” “As in most wards the most comments I receive relate to street care issues. Upminster is semi-rural, and has much green belt, which we need to keep an eye on. We also have many heritage buildings and three conservation areas to protect. With the third biggest shopping area, Thames Chase and Stubbers, it's a busy ward, but we like to think it's the best one in Havering. Sometimes the little things we achieve stand out most, like getting a road safety issue addressed,” said Linda. Outside of politics Linda’s interests include animal welfare, and family tree tracing. “I've just had my DNA done - and was surprised to find I'm only 41 per cent British - the rest being mainly French, Belgian, Spanish, Scandinavian and even Russian!” said Linda.

Working for Havering residents In another of our series of articles looking at the people who work for you in Havering Council’s enforcement teams, we go and visit dumped rubbish in Wennington.

Staff profile: Streetscene Enforcement team – Paul, Denise and Barry We’re on our way to inspect reports of fly-tips in East Hall Lane, Wennington. Living is travelling with Enforcement Officers Paul, Denise and Barry. They will check the dumped rubbish for any evidence that will tell them where it is has come from, and who may have dumped it. “We’ve found all sorts of things in the past” says Barry whose usual patrol area is the Mawneys, Havering Park and Petits wards and has worked for Havering Council for three years. “Last year I found a pile of waste that had come from an embassy in Kensington and Chelsea. You get waste from all sorts of surprising sources – I’ve even

also involves putting cases together in order for prosecutions to be brought through the courts” says Denise. She has to regularly give evidence in court. The reliability of the evidence is crucial and as we inspect the piles of dumped waste in East Hall Lane, Denise and her colleagues are careful to log all the details precisely and use evidence bags that can be produced in court later.

Denise, Paul and Barry are part of an eight-strong team tackling waste in all its forms across our borough. “We follow up on reports we receive from the public about fly-tipping but also help residents to help us keep the Barry and Denise compare notes borough clean” says Paul. “At times we try and get our message across in a fun way – like when we use very realistic, but artificial, dog poo, to demonstrate to residents how to properly use dog poo bags, and to correctly dispose of them afterwards. Helping Havering children live healthy lives

Dodging the sugar and the fat Havering Council has launched England’s first council-created app. Designed with the aim of promoting healthy eating to primary and junior school children across the borough, the Veggie RUN app also links with the new in-school healthy meal plans to encourage pupils to make healthy choices. The benefit of playing Veggie RUN is that your child can compete to win sporty prizes for themselves and their school. All primary and junior schools have been issued with their individual four digit code to share with parents, as without the code we cannot reward prizes, so if you haven’t received yours – contact your school.

Havering has great connections All aboard Crossrail with Our trip to the Elizabeth Line train simulator The Gidea Park Primary and Harold Wood Primary Taking Steps editorial team, write: On Monday 6 November last year, Gidea Park Primary School and Harold Wood Primary School went to the Bombardier Depot, Ilford. The reason we went there was to meet Steve Murphy – the Managing Director of MTR Crossrail, and some of the trainee Elizabeth Line drivers. We were also lucky enough to try the state of the art train simulator. They use it to instruct their train drivers in how to cope in difficult situations. When we arrived, we walked through the Bombardier site, managing to see their new trains. Crossrail is the biggest engineering project in Europe, not just the UK, costing billions of pounds. We also learnt that the Elizabeth Line will make it much easier to travel through London. After interviewing Steve and the drivers, we went downstairs to try out the simulator. Each of us had two goes; it was very realistic, it replicates the real stations and has people moving on and off the trains, the weather changes too, and luckily none of us crashed! Even the adults had a go, we all really enjoyed it. We were so lucky; we travelled on the new trains back to school. Taking Steps magazine is produced quarterly in collaboration with Havering Council and is distributed free-of-charge to primary schools.

Supporting you to feed your baby Benefits of breastfeeding

The benefits of breastfeeding to baby and mother are clear. It protects against cancer, obesity, diabetes, infections and sudden infant death, and supports loving relationships and brain development. There are many challenges that prevent breastfeeding being the norm, so organisations across Havering are taking action to create a supportive and informed environment for all parents. Queen's Hospital was recently awarded the Unicef Baby Friendly Initiative Stage 2 award, meaning staff are trained to provide sensitive and effective support for mums to breastfeed. Health Visitors have also been trained to provide support. Mums often have questions and setbacks, so face-to-face support is available across the borough every week at free dropin sessions run by Havering Council and LatchOn. A local photographer is using her experience with the rare skin condition vitiligo to encourage other sufferers to step in front of the camera and show the world how truly beautiful they are.

Emma Thomson, the owner of Emma Corrine Portraits, who hires a studio at Fairkytes Arts Centre in Hornchurch, has had vitiligo since she was 14. She used to suffer from severe anxiety and depression due to the bullying and low self-esteem it caused. Vitilgo makes the skin, and sometimes the hair, turn white in patches. The way the condition develops varies from one person to another. It can spread to cover the whole body, but this does not necessarily happen. The most common form of vitiligo affects both sides of the body, but it can affect one side only. “Kids at school used to call me a leopard or say that I had leprosy” says Emma. “In some cases the natural skin pigment goes away and then comes back” explains Emma. “I’m also very prone to sunburn and have to use Factor 50 suncream.”

For years Emma would hide her vitiligo and cover it with fake tan and make up. However, in recent years Emma has learned to love and accept herself and is inspired by the likes of fashion model Winnie Harlow who is in the public eye and makes no attempt to hide her condition. Emma has been working with local vitiligo sufferers to encourage them to step in front of her camera and to love and accept themselves for who they are. She has created a Facebook group called 'Vitiligo Project 2018' and is now arranging local meet-ups for vitiligo sufferers.

Home from Home

Home from Home for the Elderly’s primary aim is to establish a residential care home and day centre for the elderly in Havering. Granted charity status in 2012, the charity is striving to provide first class care in a loving “home from home” environment where elderly people can live in the way they choose to live. In October 2014 they began a befriending scheme providing non-technical care and companionship to individuals in their own homes. The befrienders are all volunteers, co-ordinated and supported by the charity. Nearly thirty elderly people are being visited on a regular basis by the charity’s trained volunteer visitors. The charity also brings together elderly and young people to allow elderly resident to pass on their wealth of experiences and practical skills such as knitting and sewing. i www.hfh4elderly.org

RAF1 This year marks 100 years of the Royal Air Force (RAF), the world’s first - and most famous - independent Air Force. The celebratory events officially launched on 1 April and earlier this month there was a centenary service in Westminster Abbey, followed by a parade in The Mall and mass flypast. A former airfield in Havering plays a key role in the RAF’s glorious history. Soon after the First World War ended it was decided that Suttons Farm airfield in Hornchurch was

During the Second World War RAF Hornchurch was a fighter station and squadrons from Hornchurch played a key role in the Battle of Britain. Hornchurch became the most renowned Spitfire station in Fighter Command. 54 Squadron destroyed the most Luftwaffe aircraft during the battle and Eric Lock of 41 Squadron achieved the most individual hits. Many famous names flew from Hornchurch including Douglas Bader, Derek Dowding, Paddy Finucane, and Robert Stanford-Tuck. After the war RAF Hornchurch was an Officers’ Training School and later an RAF Volunteer Centre and aircrew selection centre. The airfield closed in 1962.

Heathrow touches down in Rainham

Phil Wilbraham, the Heathrow Expansion Programme Director (with arm raised) responds to Havering’s Heathrow Logistics Hub presentation at the recent meeting held in Rainham.

A delegation from Heathrow Airport visited SEGRO’s Beam Reach 6 site in Rainham in June as part of a nationwide tour of sixty-five sites, still in the running to be construction centres for Heathrow expansion. Havering is bidding to be one of the Heathrow Logistics Hubs by highlighting Rainham’s unrivalled connectivity to Heathrow by rail, road, river and air. Logistics Hubs will help ensure that businesses across the UK can form part of the airport’s supply chain, enabling Heathrow’s new runway to deliver a legacy of construction excellence across the UK. Logistics Hubs, where components of the airport will be pre-assembled before being transported in consolidated loads to the airport, feature in the Government’s Industrial Strategy, listed as an example of how to develop skills across the UK and create conditions where successful businesses can emerge. Heathrow has also begun working with infrastructure companies to explore how the final sites could be used for future projects, creating a long lasting legacy for Britain. The proposed location is in the centre of the Riverside Opportunity area that stretches from Newham through to South Essex. Around 70 transport and logistics companies are already based in the area alongside a growing engineering sector presence and construction industry training resources. A successful bid in an area already earmarked for industrial development will help support a growth in employment opportunities for local people and the establishment of a sustainable and innovative

manufacturing centre. Heathrow representatives were taken on a tour of part of the location in Consul Avenue, Rainham and met with former leader and current Cabinet Member Cllr Roger Ramsey, Senior Havering Council staff, and local business leaders including Alan Holland, the Business Unit Director for SEGRO and Ilker Dervish, the Chair of the London Riverside Business Improvement District. Cllr Damian White, the Leader of Havering Council, said:

“It’s great to be shortlisted and we will be demonstrating all the reasons we think this site would be an ideal location for one of Heathrow’s Logistics Hubs. Yoga is for everybody With so much choice, how can you find a class that is right for you? Yoga teacher Janet Tibble, a qualified British Wheel of Yoga teacher who runs classes in Upminster has some advice: The last few years have seen a huge upsurge in yoga classes across the borough. There are so many different styles on offer it is difficult to know where to start. With so much variety, from vigorous Ashtanga yoga and hot Bikram to Hatha and the more gentle restorative yoga, there is bound to be something right for you. However, even when you decide which type of yoga might suit you, you will still need to find a teacher with whom you feel comfortable and inspired by. The best way to do that is to select a few options that attract you and contact the teacher to find a little more about the content and approach. They may share something about themselves, their introduction to yoga and training, for example. Then, if you get a positive vibe, just give it a try. Initial impressions seldom mislead, so you need to feel welcomed, comfortable and cared for from the start. Being able to hear and understand the teacher's instructions is important. A teacher should be mindful of your limitations or any injuries, especially if you are new to yoga, while at the same time encouraging and inspiring confidence. There are sure to be different abilities within any class, so teachers need to be inclusive, enabling accomplished students go further while supporting and helping newer practitioners. On a practical level, regular practice is essential to enjoy the benefits of yoga so choose a class that is convenient in both location and time. You know you are in the right class when you leave feeling lengthened, strengthened and totally relaxed... and cannot wait to go back next week!
