Community Education Fall 2015
Superintendent’s Message... It has been an exciting start to the 2015-16 school year. We had a wonderful start as we welcomed new and returning staff at the Annual Trustee Kickoff on August 24. Teacher of the Year, David Johnke, provided a powerful and inspiring message in preparation for the return of our students on August 26.
The Havre Public School elected Board of Trustees and Officers are as follows: Aileen Couch - Board Chair Harvey Capellen - Board Vice-Chair Cindy Erickson Ed Hill Theresa Miller Norman Proctor Tim Scheele Curtis Smeby
One of the highlights of the start to this school year was having Mr. Sather return to cut the ribbon at the Sunnyside Open House. The Board of Trustees, current Sunnyside staff, and the Havre Chamber Ambassadors christened the new construction. It was a fantastic evening as so many folks turned out to walk through Sunnyside and see all of the great changes. We greatly appreciate the support of the Havre Community and know this building will help serve children for many years to come. I appreciate the vision of our Trustees and community. I continue to see daily reminders of just how fortunate I am to live in this community and work for such an exceptional school district. Thank you and my best wishes to all of our students and staff that 2015 – 2016 will be the most outstanding school year they will experience. Andy Carlson Superintendent HAVRE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Havre Daily News, Sept. 17, 2015 –– 3
Mr. David Johnke Teacher of the Year 2015 Mrs. Darla Kaercher who was named Teacher of the Year 2014, had the pleasure of introducing Havre Public Schools’ 2015 Teacher of the Year. Four outstanding educators were nominated for this award; Mrs. Mary Jo Wells (Highland Park Kindergarten Teacher), Mr. John Ita (Havre High School History Teacher), Mrs. Holly Bitz (then Sunnyside 4th Grade Teacher and present Lincoln McKinley Principal) and Mr. David Johnke (Havre High School Band Teacher). Mrs. Kaercher (retired Havre Elementary Teacher), said during her introduction of Mr. Johnke that she knew him from his High School band program, wonderful band concerts, outstanding marching band performances, and a rousing pep band that is envied throughout the state. Mr. Johnke’s nomination letter states, “This man goes above and beyond teaching students music, he shares his passion for music with our students and helps to create and nurture their own passion for music”. David was very touched by this nomination letter because all the criteria that was mentioned is what he aspires to instill in the students he teaches. His band program touches our entire community from the streets, stadiums, gymnasiums, practice fields and various other locations throughout our town and state. Mrs. Bradbury goes on to say, “David Johnke is creating exactly what Havre Public Schools envisions; citizens who are capable of leading with a purpose and direction, being a positive member of a community and sharing their joy of music for the rest of their lives.” David grew up on a farm/ranch south of Winnet, Montana, attending Winnett Public schools for all of his elementary and high school education. Upon high school graduation in 1993, David attended Montana State University in Bozeman to earn a Bachelor’s in Music Education. He is currently working on his Master’s in Music Education at Vandercook College of Music in Chicago, Il. Throughout his childhood David’s mom was a public school music teacher and local musician. This was his greatest influence in choosing music. David was ready and waiting to move on from High School. He says “If I were to go back twenty-two years ago and talk to my former self—a senior in high school—and say, “ David you will become a public school music teacher.” I would have never believed it in a million years. The fact was that I hated school so much.” During his first three years at MSU—Bozeman, he dabbled in general studies programs and took classes that interested him which included a number of music classes. Finally deciding on the major of music performance, he was asked one day to teach trumpet lessons to a 7th grader. David decided to accept this job, because what college student doesn’t want a little extra money and in his high school years he was able to develop a great repute with younger children and their parents through school and church functions. This was a pivotal turning point to bring David to this position. By the end of his fourth year in college he switched to music education and has not looked back since. David started his teaching career in Judith Gap, MT, teaching in their school system from August 2001—May 2005. He taught K-12 Music, this position included K-4 general music, 5-6 band & choir, 7-8 band & choir, HS band & choir. During his last year there, he team taught theater and drama with the English Teacher. Mr. Johnke is currently director of bands at Havre High School, holding this position since the start of the school year in 2005. He teaches curricular percussion, ensembles, three concert bands, a guitar class, and in addition he directs the marching band, pep band and two jazz ensembles. David loves his job! In order for him to be prepared, organized and successful it requires a lot of extra preparation time outside of the regular school day. In addition there are evening and weekend obligations due to concerts, jazz band, marching band, and pep band rehearsals and performances. David says the best part of his job is, “I enjoy seeing the students excitement for the activities band has to offer. It’s thrilling to see the growth of each student throughout their High School career.” David’s biggest obstacle that he has encountered in the area of education is finding the balance between work and personal life. He enjoys hiking and camping in the summer and year round he enjoys playing trumpet and piano, both with his students and for himself. During the two week Christmas break he plans to fly to Germany to visit his younger sister and nephew. During the annual Havre Public Schools kickoff welcoming staff to the 2015-2016 school year, Mr. Johnke gave the following charge to his peers “It has been my goal since becoming a teacher to create an environment that welcomes students as they are and provide them with a safe place to be who they are. So if they are a victim of bullying, they can always feel the band room is a safe place to go and relax. I’m sure that most of you know that a structured school and classroom environment in which the rules and policies are enforced consistently and fairly provides a place that all students feel safe and comfortable to learn in. When the entire staff works together to enforce these rules—even if you don’t agree with some of them, the students are more able to learn and we as teachers can focus more on teaching and enjoy our careers even more. I sincerely hope that you will help create an environment for your students that makes them feel welcome, confident, comfortable, and successful.” If you attend a High School sporting event in which the pep band is playing, a band concert in which the students have put countless hours of practice time, or the Festival Days parade this weekend in which the marching band will perform, sit back and enjoy all the talents that our students are showcasing under the careful direction of this talented and exceptional teacher.
Congratulations Mr. David Johnke 2015 Teacher of the Year!!
