Community Education Fall 2016
Superintendent’s Message...
We had a fantastic start to the 2016-2017 school year as we opened with the annual Havre Board of Trustee Welcome Back Kick-Off on August 29th. Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Rebecca Reno, and Board Chair, Aileen Couch, provided very positive messages and focused attention on the importance of the education profession. This school year we welcomed 21 new certified staff members. These folks have hit the ground running and it is great having them on board.
The Havre Public School elected Board of Trustees and Officers are as follows: Aileen Couch - Board Chair Harvey Capellen - Board Vice-Chair Wayne Bolken Cindy Erickson Ed Hill Theresa Miller Tim Scheele Curtis Smeby
There are some other changes that we will work hard to bring to your attention over the course of the school year. One of them that will take some time to accustom ourselves to is the switch in our school phone numbers. We have magnets at every school listing the new phone numbers for each building and the numbers are listed on our website. Our website has a few changes in store too. The most notable being that the address is now www.blueponyk12.com. All school email addresses will shift over to @blueponyk12.com instead of the cumbersome version @havre.k12.mt.us. We are hopeful that over time it will be easier to remember and provide opportunity to share the Blue Pony pride that we all feel. Over the course of the year, I receive many questions and inquiries as I move about the community and they can be quite varied. This time of year a large majority of the questions are often related to the start of the school year and the return of approximately 1900 students. Business signs around our community welcome back college students and wish the Blue Ponies good luck in the upcoming sports seasons. It can be difficult to put into words to someone that does not work in education the feeling that surrounds the first day of school. There is a sense of renewal and energy each year, even as the familiarity grows, there is something new. It is such a blessing to work in a profession that affords me that opportunity. For the Class of 2017 this will be their senior year and the Class of 2029 will just begin their journey at Highland Park. A beginning and an end connected for 180 days of the 2016-2017 school year. It is a feeling that I still cannot describe accurately and one that I continually cherish. This is going to be a fantastic year. I hope you are able to find a class in our Community Education flyer that is of interest to you. We are looking forward to another great year of offerings and providing unique learning opportunities for our community. Go Blue Ponies! Welcome back,
HAVRE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Mrs. Rebecca Reno Teacher of the Year 2016 Andy Carlson has the pleasure of introducing the 2016 Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Rebecca Reno, Three outstanding educators were nominated for Teacher of the Year 2016; Mr. Dave Carlson (Havre Middle School Band Teacher), Miss Leslie Staples (Sunnyside 4th Grade Teacher), and Mrs. Rebecca Reno (Havre High School Science Teacher). Mrs. Mary Wagner’s nomination letter states, “Although she has only been teaching Science at Havre High School for 4 years, she has already established herself as one of the finest teachers on our staff. She is smart, organized, creative, kind, compassionate, and patient”. She goes on to state that her lesson plans are done to “perfection” but she willingly and quickly changes them to meet the needs of her students. Rebecca grew up in Belgrade, Montana and graduated from Montana State University Bozeman in 1994 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science Education. In 2001, six days after her oldest child was born, she received her Masters of Science in Science degree also from MSU-Bozeman. Including the four years she taught in Box Elder, Rebecca has taught for a total of nine years. In her teaching career, she has taught Algebra, Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. She currently teaches Biology and Environmental Science at Havre High School. Microbiology was her original major but after her dad encouraged her to pursue a teaching career, she changed her major her sophomore year. “He was right, teaching has allowed me to have the same schedule as my kids, teach a subject that I’ve always loved, and build relationships with all the great students at Havre High”, she states. Creatively teaching students to have fun with learning about Biology and Environmental Science is one of her favorite things about teaching. “I love what I do”. In 2014, Mrs. Reno heard about a grant through Northwestern Energy that really sparked her interest for her Environmental Science class. After successfully applying for and receiving the grant, Northwestern Energy installed 24 fixed solar panels to the southwestern portion of the Havre High roof. Students calculated the optimal amount of panels needed based on the square footage of the building and while the currently installed panels do not cover the entire demand of the school, the panels do help cut the cost by about $1,000 per month. Another program that adds great value to the education of her students is the SMART Schools Recycling Challenge Program through the Montana Governor’s office. The Saving Money and Resources Today program focuses on educating students, teachers and communities on the importance of waste reduction. Havre High competes with other schools in this statewide program that encourages students and staff to recycle. In Mary’s nomination letter, she writes about a re-purposing project Rebecca has her students do in which she has them take an object that is useless and make it into something useful or valuable. She encourages creativity and she recognizes when students need extra “TLC”. She unselfishly gives of her time and the students enjoy her positive attitude. “Above and beyond everything else, she is brilliant! She has taught students at Havre high School so much about population growth, resource management, recycling, and so much more. The students are more aware of what is happening not only locally, but across the world, than ever before”. Rebecca has been married to Shane, a Sergeant Game Warden with Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks, for 22 years. They lived in Billings before moving to Havre so that Shane could continue his warden career. Shane has been a devoted husband and dad to their two boys Quinn, 14, and Kale, 12. When not teaching, she enjoys being with her family and enjoying the activities they are involved in such as football, wrestling and baseball. The family enjoys fishing and traveling to see out of town relatives.
Congratulations Mrs. Rebecca Reno 2016 Teacher of the Year!!
