‘Ohana Check-In We are here for YOU. Welcome to Hawai‘i Pacific University.
Welcome to HPU from President John Y. Gotanda
Aloha and Welcome! One of my favorite Hawaiian phrases, Pūpūkāhi i holomua, teaches us that we must work together to move forward. The guidance is powerfully fulfilled at Hawai‘i Pacific University, where our work together begins on our one-of-a-kind campus and spreads across our extended ‘ohana in the Islands and across the globe. Ours is a community that cares. HPU cares about educating tomorrow’s leaders and making a difference in the world. Our faculty care about teaching, mentoring and working with each student. Our students care about the role that they will play in society. And our alumni are proud of and care deeply about their alma mater. I am privileged to be part of the immensely talented and committed ‘ohana at Hawai‘i Pacific University. I know that you will find and meet a great many people here who care about you and will help you on your journey. This ‘Ohana Check-In booklet provides you with the background and resources to make your transition to becoming a Shark fun, fulfilling, and fabulous! We are here to support you and to answer any and all questions you and your family may have. I greatly look forward to meeting you in person and wish you the very best in the years to come. Yours truly,
John Y. Gotanda President, Hawaiʻi Pacific University
Ask Sharky What is the meaning of ʻOhana?
Definition – family, kin, group.
What is the ʻOhana Check-In?
A resource for all new HPU students.
Hawaiʻi Pacific University understands that the transition to becoming a college student comes with many decisions and changes. Many students will be moving away from home for the first time and leaving behind the comforts of their high school and hometown communities. HPU is here to support, guide and assist students with all of their questions, concerns, and needs.
Why should I attend the ‘Ohana Check-Ins?
By attending, you will help ensure a smoother transition to HPU. You will receive information that you and your family need on a ‘just in time’ basis, about important topics like housing, financial aid, class registration, travel to campus, and orientation. You will learn about the many resources that are available to you to support your success as a student. Check-Ins provide you an opportunity to connect with your new classmates. Each Check-In is unique, and we encourage not only you, but your entire family to attend.
