t the heart of your education at Hawai‘i Pacific University are your professors, dedicated educators with diverse academic and research backgrounds who also share something else: a passion for teaching.

Which means you won’t just see them in class. You’ll get internship advice over coffee on the Fort Street Mall, talk nursing career choices on a lanai of the Cooke Memorial Academic Center on the Hawai‘i Loa campus, or learn about graduate school options while doing research at the Oceanic Institute. Experts in Their Fields HPU’s faculty members are experts in their fields, staying abreast and often ahead of the curve through research and experience, including: • Exploring new ways to establish fair exchange rates in the global business community • Bringing real courtroom experiences into international business classes • Consulting for businesses including American Honda Motor Company, First Hawaiian Bank, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Hawai‘i International Film Festival • Researching the burgeoning world of podcasting • Sharing decades of in-the-trenches experience with accounting students • Analyzing global trends in marketing and advertising saturation

“ I’m proud of the fact that HPU encourages me to be a mentor and talk with young people and their families about the opportunities kids have in science. When I went to college nobody ever took the time to talk to me about science— I basically went because I wanted to scuba dive with Jacques Cousteau. I never dived with Jacques, but I have been in all the world’s oceans, spent four years at sea, and been down in research submarines—and I love sharing those experiences with students.” Dr. Chris Winn Director of Marine Sciences

that bring learning to life. Student Research Student research can prepare you for the real world, allow you to get a jump-start on graduate school and help you decide what you want to do with your life. Unfortunately, many institutions are so full of graduate students, you’re lucky if you can wash a test tube. At HPU, small classes and a student-centered philosophy mean you can get the hands-on experience and essential research skills you need. Working side-by-side with professors, our students are: 10 • Researching plankton tows in Kane‘ohe Bay on the Kaholo, HPU’s research vessel • Deepening their knowledge of forensic psychology through a study of jury selection • Developing hands-on skills in nursing, education, and social work through clinical experiences and practicums • Examining sustainable fishing using HPU’s Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler • Searching for new treatments for strokes in the cells of marine organisms

Learning through Doing The projects and experiences you’ll gain in the classroom and beyond will provide you with real skills and the ability to communicate and collaborate with your professors and your peers. You might find yourself: • Developing a global knowledge of the medical arts at the Transcultural Nursing Center • Turning a class project in closet organization into an international business featured in the pages of InStyle and O magazines • Examining rare artifacts and exploring the anthropological and archeological history of the Pacific at the renowned Bishop Museum • Attending a master class with the Honolulu Brass from the Honolulu Symphony • Learning to work with and counsel your fellow students as part of the psychology department’s Peer Support Program

and Your Hands HPU’s Floating Laboratory Students in marine science, biology or environmental science can gain field and research experience aboard the Kaholo, HPU’s 45-foot, double-hulled research boat. A $75,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education is allowing HPU students to collect and assess data in Kane‘ohe Bay, a long-term project that will provide benchmarks for changes in the bay’s chemistry, water temperature, and marine plant life.

When we say you’ll go in-depth at HPU, we mean it. Students working side-by-side with professors dove up to 5,000 feet below the surface to investigate environmental conditions of submarine canyons using a Pisces V submarine. Dr. Eric Vetter works with student Brandi Kivi (shown above with the Pisces V submarine). Data from the research contribute to understanding of how biodiversity is created and maintained, and the impact of canyons on near-shore fisheries and their role in marine conservation.

HPU—our students

Our travel industry management program trains international industry leaders, many of whom intern at Hawai‘i’s leading hotels and resorts.

HPU is one of only 16 institutions in the country selected by the Association of American Colleges and Universities to examine how to integrate global learning into the general education curriculum.

The liberal arts program in the humanities, international studies, the social and behavioral sciences, and Teaching English as a Second Language—to name a few—are enhanced by the multiethnic, multicultural environment.

Global Citizenship International Intersection Diversity at HPU goes beyond the geographic. Students come from great metropolitan areas and tiny villages, wealthy families and modest means. They are Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Jews and other religions. The atmosphere at HPU is lively and informal, and opportunities for students to share their values, customs, and traditions happen in the classroom, informally in study groups, over egg rolls on the Fort Street Mall, at campus events like Intercultural Day—

International Students: A Welcoming Environment Because HPU welcomes hundreds of new international students every year, we make it a priority to offer those students the support and assistance they need to make their stay in Hawai‘i healthy, happy, and successful.

We have many years of experience dealing with the special concerns of international students. From the International Student Services Office and the English Foundations Program to the many country-specific student organizations, HPU bridges the gap between countries and cultures to make everyone’s experience as enriching as possible. Our international advisors can: • advise on immigration issues and visa status, especially F-1 requirements, I-20 extensions, change of status, and work authorization; • conduct orientation programs to help international students adjust to their new social and academic demands and clarify expectations between home and American cultures; and • facilitate intercultural exchange through various cultural activities and through the Council of Countries Organizations.

Joe Theil: International Experience Leads to International Fashion When Joe Thiel began looking for a college back in the 1990s, he had two requirements. “It had to have an international flair, and it had to be interesting,” says the New Jersey native and 1997 HPU graduate. “When I saw that HPU had both, my college search was over.” Once in Hawai‘i, Thiel discovered an environment that fit his personality to a T. “Having the island of Oahu as your campus allowed for a lot of growth and exploration,” says Thiel, who graduated with a degree in international relations. “The college and the island are melting pots of culture, and allowed me to not only learn more about other cultures, but my own as well.” Today, Thiel is public relations director for Issey Miyake USA Corporation, an award-winning international fashion house. It’s a challenging yet rewarding career that the international relations major entered, he says, thanks to Hawai‘i Pacific University.
