Learn by Doing

At Home and All Over the World You study for a class taught by an Australian…with friends from Sweden, Indonesia, and Italy…while sitting at an open-air café on Fort Street Mall in downtown Honolulu, surrounded by smells and flavors from Korea to Poland to France to China. Professors…classmates… internship and co-op opportunities…the very environment…at HPU, you’ll discover a uniquely global education.

Get Busy

Your HPU Student Body At HPU, our student body is made up of almost equal portions of Hawai‘i, mainland, and international students.

At HPU, we believe in learning by doing — so you’ll find plenty of internships, co-ops, and research projects locally and globally to get your hands busy. Like developing marketing strategies and materials for the U.S. Tennis Association, crunching numbers for the World Bank, or designing a website for an international real estate consulting firm. Or even conducting research at the Oceanic Institute or on the deck of our HPU-owned vessel, Kaholo. And because we’re located in Honolulu — the hub of Pacific trade and commerce — the opportunities are nearly endless.

Why Hawai‘i Pacific University?

Stephanie Bovia ‘11 Marine Biology San Francisco, CA

HPU offered amazing opportunities for hands-on learning. You can access the research vessel starting your freshman year, and all of your labs are based around the oceanography and marine biology laboratories. I’ve experienced what most marine biology students don’t have until their master’s or even their doctoral programs. What kind of research programs have you been involved with? Sea turtles are my passion, and I was thrilled to be chosen as the youngest member of a research team tracking them in Panamalea Cove. We would kayak to our GPS locations to see where the turtles are, and sometimes I would find myself snorkeling within two feet of one of the turtles. Being that close just melts your heart. The research I was conducting can help protect their habitat, and I really felt like I was making a difference. What’s your most memorable HPU experience? I am part of a program rescuing stranded marine mammals, the only one in all of the Hawaiian Islands. I’ve worked on humpback calves, spinner dolphins, and more. Sometimes they survive and sometimes they don’t. It’s a balance between heartbreaking and amazing, but it’s something that I know I wouldn’t experience outside of HPU.

“HPU’s global focus is not only helping me in my choice of major, but also in the way that I think about the world around me. My eyes have been opened to the challenges that we face as a society, but at the same time I am comforted with knowing that there are so many talented people in the world. With HPU’s global focus and the experiences I’ve had, I will be better equipped to go abroad and serve others.”

“HPU understands the needs of international students. It’s a place to share, learn, and enjoy the international learning setting. My education is global, relevant, and competitive. I know I’ve made the right choice investing my time and resources at HPU.” Sanjeev Ranabhat Journalism Nepal

I spent two months in Peru last summer working in orphanages and an elementary school. It opened my mind to new people and relationships, and helped me realize how important it is to get to know other cultures and people and help in any way possible.

How does HPU’s student body and location impact your education? The diversity of HPU and Hawai‘i make for a unique education. In my classes, you have different viewpoints from different countries. I have friends from around the world. And living in Honolulu puts you elbow-to-elbow with people from just about any culture you can imagine.

Did HPU’s diversity help you in your career?

I came from an international background, so HPU was the perfect fit. I was able to interact with people from around the world, which is exactly what’s needed to be successful in my industry.
