iving and learning in Hawai‘i is an unforgettable experience. Honolulu is a major hub of activity for business, education, government, military affairs, health services, politics, and commerce. These resources provide students with a variety of opportunities to conduct research, network with professionals, and experience on-the-job training through internships. Life on the HPU campus owes much of its ambience to the Honolulu community. With a population of 800,000, Honolulu is a large and modern city, including an award winning mass transit system, but still retains all the advantages of a small town. Graduate Learning and Study Options

"The Master of Arts in Global Leadership and Sustainable Development program at HPU has taught me what it means and what it takes to lead sustainable change. Successful sustainable development efforts require one to think holistically and the GLSD courses provide the means to achieve this by explaining the interdependence between social, economical, and environmental actions. This program has given me the opportunity to network with leading professionals in the Sustainable Development field, and has enabled me to contribute to the development of my community. "

As the world economy becomes more complex and challenging, so does the demand for creative, knowledgeable leaders who have the conceptual tools to think critically, understand the issues that underlie global trends and problems, and manage effectively the cultural diversity that accompanies work in an international context. Through core courses, supporting fields electives, and a capstone research paper, the MA/GLSD program prepares students who are ready for the turbulent environment we face today. Faculty in the MA/GLSD program combine impressive academic credentials, stature in their professional disciplines, and years of actual business and consulting experience. Many have extensive international experiences and therefore welcome the diversity that HPU's students bring to the classroom. All of the faculty in the MA/GLSD program are dedicated to making the HPU experience edifying, challenging, and enjoyable for the student. The classroom experience in the MA/GLSD program is dynamic and interactive. Wide use is made of cases, multimedia technology, experiential exercises, small group activities, and field projects to make the learning environment more effective. Students are encouraged to share the responsibility for their learning and to contribute to the learning of their peers. Students will themselves have a combination of working and personal experience that contributes to the learning environment in the classroom.

Global Leadership is about Vision and Values Throughout the MA/GLSD program, students are continually asked to explore the appropriateness of their own values and beliefs for the emerging global leader that resides within each of them. The educational experience is also enriched by using critical and social justice perspectives that inform and shape their personal leadership development. Students are encouraged and supported to pursue both on and off campus community service activities to test their emergent leadership skills. They are also encouraged to join the highly respected Globally Responsible Environmental Efforts Now (GREEN) student club which is known for its effective service accomplishments. The ultimate goal of the MA/GLSD program is for graduates to know how to lead and respond effectively to the pressing global issues of democracy, justice, peace, human rights, sustainable development, and the wise use of power in organizational settings worldwide. w w w. h p u . e d u / m a g l s d

"When I started researching global trade and business issues in more depth I attended several seminars but found them very shallow. A Hawai‘i Pacific University advertisement for the MA/GLSD caught my attention and I proceeded to learn more about the program. The program seemed excellent and I signed up. Now, after a year of study, I have found that the program did not just broaden my horizon on how to deal with other cultures and business environments, but it has also shown me the importance of respecting the environment and our fellow global citizens." Capstone Courses PROFESSIONAL PAPER (6 SEMESTER HOURS) The Master of Arts in Global Leadership and Sustainable Development has two capstone options--the thesis or the professional paper. The thesis option is designed for the student seeking a more concentrated, intellectual focus and in-depth experience in independent research. This option requires the student to investigate a problem related to globalization or to economic development activities that are unsustainable. The thesis is strongly recommended for students intending to pursue the doctorate. The professional paper is a graduate-level research paper with a practical emphasis. Students should be prepared to provide an oral presentation and full defense of the professional paper. "Drawing upon my own background in economics, environmental policy and international development, I challenge my students to increase fluency in key economic and policy concepts in the field of sustainable development; gain necessary communication and policy analysis tools for post graduate applications; and refine critical thinking skills to become better informed decision makers, as both sustainable development professionals and global citizens."

GLSD 7100 Professional Paper I Initial design and development of the major research paper. Pre: GLSD 6005. Graduate Standing. GLSD 7200 Professional Paper II Continuing design and development of the major research paper. Pre: GLSD 7100. Graduate Standing.

MA/GLSD Program Objectives Students successfully completing the Master of Arts in Global Leadership and Sustainable Development (MA/GLSD) program will be able to: • Use systems thinking tools and concepts to identify and analyze structural causes to global and environmental problems. • Collaboratively search for solutions to global and environmental challenges that meet the expectations of multiple stakeholders while respecting ecological limits. • Think critically about events, decisions, and issues related to globalization in terms of both short and long-term consequences, including effects on the natural world. • Understand that the dynamic, complex and interdependent nature of human systems requires transparency and emergent processes to achieve social justice, including environmentally sustainable stewardship. • Analyze institutional and environmental issues from an ethical, value-based perspective. • Understand the importance and value of ecological economics as an alternative to the prevailing economic worldview. • Self reflect on their leadership potential and construct a personal leadership development plan. • Lead, conceptualize, initiate, and implement sustainability change programs within organizations.

Any time a discussion of power arises, it's important to examine the social forces that allow one individual or group to influence or dominate another individual or group. Students who take this course are encouraged to examine such relationships, whether at a micro or a macro level.”
