Students entering the MA/OC may take several paths towards their educational goals and professional development. They may be aspiring or practicing managers from such areas as business, information systems, government, health care and social services, the military, and education who wish to enhance their change leadership skills. Or they may be change agents such as consultants, trainers, OD specialists, and other professionals building their expertise in creating changes. A third possible reason for students entering the MA/OC program may be to prepare for a doctoral program in social science, management, organizational development and change, or other related areas. Regardless of the motivation, students in the MA/OC program are provided a globally appropriate education that will be of great value to them in their future endeavors. In addition to the traditional in-class format, Hawai‘i Pacific University’s Master of Arts in Organizational Change curriculum is alternatively available in a distance learning, online-based format. Our distance learning approach is based on multiple teaching methods. Our software, WEBCT, is supported by online discussions, conference calls, and other means that ensure the interactive advantages of traditional education remain part of the learning experience.

The Master of Arts in Organizational Change is designed to prepare students to lead change in business, government, health and human services, education, communications, the military, community and economic development, and many other contemporary settings. Students will develop cross-disciplinary and practical skills for coping with and leading change. Students learn how to design innovations for organizational cultural change, as well as how to implement an actual program of change in an organization. Students enrolled full time can complete the MA/OC program in 18 months (four terms). The above diagram depicts a typical schedule for full-time students; however, part-time options are also available. Students may also select from the many online options available and choose to pursue either the master’s degree or a professional certificate.

Course Descriptions THE MASTER OF ARTS IN ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE (MA/OC) (42 SEMESTER CREDITS – 14 COURSES REQUIRED)

PSOC 6440* Organizational Development PSOC 6440 is the foundation for all MA/OC and Professional Certificate in OCD courses. Students first learn the basic nature of human culture and organizational change. Then the practice of OCD is studied within larger holistic and comparative contexts for global and local change. Discussions and assignments are designed to assist the student in differentiating between change and adaptation. Change and development initiatives in governments, communities, and corporations are discussed. PSOC 6441 National and Community Change and Development National and community-level change and development is being experienced in almost every area of our contemporary world. Resolving ethnic and religious conflicts, developing market economies for global competition, resource acquisition, technology transfer, education, and creating new approaches to governance are some of the related issues. This course presents a holistic perspective on the issues of change and development at the macro levels of government and community organization. Models for change and development are reviewed as well as their applications in various human and environmental contexts. Specifically, change and development initiatives in economic development, public health improvement projects, stakeholder reconciliation, urban and environmental planning, and educational programs are reviewed and analyzed. PSOC 6442* Culture and Intervention Strategies PSOC 6442 includes discussions and assignments intended to develop a working understanding of the influence of culture in various human organizations. Culture is presented as the fundamental knowledge we use to create adaptive solutions for human problems. National, corporate, community, and group organizations are fundamental expressions of culturally-influenced world views and values. Frameworks for observing, analyzing, measuring, and changing culture are presented. Approaches for reconciling conflicts among stakeholders with seemingly different culture values and models for behavior are used in simulations and case discussions. PSOC 6443* Change Leadership PSOC 6443 presents a globally-relevant perspective for understanding the dynamics of change leadership. Issues such as power, stakeholders, and conflict are discussed via case studies. Students learn how their own world views, values, and personal behaviors can influence their effectiveness as leaders in different social and organizational contexts. Self-reflection is balanced with group and organizational understanding to analyze the appropriateness and utility of various models and methods for leading change. PSOC 6444*Innovations and Creativity Innovation and creativity are critical aspects of organizational change and development in contemporary societies. This course explores the significance of innovation and creativity to the human experience. Relationships among creativity, change, and innovation are discussed within a multidisciplinary perspective. Practical methods for creating innovation in organization and group processes are illustrated via cases and simulations. PSOC 6445 Organizational Behavior This course provides HPU graduate students with a broad overview of the OB field. Theoretical and methodological understandings of OB are discussed and analyzed via a combination of practically-based cases and research studies. Fundamental aspects of human behavior, such as motivation, communication, decision making, problem solving, power, leadership, conflict resolution, and technology transfer are discussed in a globally-appropriate perspective. Both non-Western and Western approaches to OB are compared and discussed. Prerequisites: Graduate Status. PSOC 6446 Consulting Theory and Practice Consulting has become a global industry, with a wide range of professional disciplines involved. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the consulting profession, with particular focus on organizational structures and process for providing consultation services, product development and marketing, and approaches for implementing effective projects and initiatives. Learning will be enhanced by the use of cases, simulations, and experiential assignments. PSOC 6446 may be substituted for PSOC 6441 or PSOC 6445 in the MA/OC Program Requirements with permission of the Professional Studies Dean and MA/OC Program Chair. Prerequisites: Graduate Status. PSOC 6447 Consulting and Group Process Facilitation Methods Participants in this integrative seminar will learn approaches for creating change interventions in organizational settings. Group process, facilitation methods, dealing with stakeholders’ resistance, aligning power systems, and organizational design will be among the issues to be discussed. Learning will be enhanced by cases, simulations, and experiential assignments. Prerequisites: Graduate standing. *Courses in Term One also fulfill the requirements for the Certificate in OCD.

Course Descriptions PSOC 6005 Methods of Research A course designed for entering graduate students. The course acquaints students with the theories of current and historical importance; introduces or reinforces the tenets of the scientific method; introduces the faculty, and previews key concept areas being taught in the program; discusses research designs and methods appropriate in graduate programs; and introduces students to research materials, knowledge technology, communications skills, and both quantitative and qualitative methods to be used throughout the program of studies. PSOC 7100 Professional Paper I Initial design and development of the major research paper for students in the MA/OC program. Prerequisites: PSOC 6005 and IS 6010. PSOC 7200 Professional Paper II Continuing design and development of the major research paper for students in the MA/OC program. Prerequisites: PSOC 7100. Graduate standing. PSOC 7300 Professional Consulting Practicum This course involves a research-based consultation experience in a client organization. Students engage in a supervised learning process including entry and contracting, data collection and management, goal setting, planning and facilitation for implementation, to an evaluation and termination of the initiative. Students work under the guidance of a field supervisor and course professor. PSOC 7300 may be substituted for PSOC 7200 by students jointly completing the MA/OC and Professional Certificate in Consulting. Prerequisites: Thirty credit hours of graduate coursework completed in the student’s master’s degree program requirements and PSOC 6446, PSOC 6447, PSOC 7100, IS 6020, IS 6230, and IS 6220. Graduate standing. IS 6100 Information Systems Management A required course for many graduate students at Hawaii Pacific University. Its purpose is twofold: one, to ensure that all graduate students understand the building block concepts associated with modern computer and communications systems; and, two, to sensitize students to the business and management implications of information systems. Using a case-study approach, students investigate the effects of technologyenabling changes on the health and welfare of corporate entities and learn to evaluate the appropriateness of competing IS-based solutions to commonly occurring opportunities in a modern global economy. All students learn to use online research services. IS 6230 Knowledge Management The course provides an awareness of current theories and best practices associated with Knowledge Management (KM). Using a seminar approach, IS 6230 will ask students to become expert in the areas of: identifying and valuing knowledge assets, properly managing intellectual capital, choosing and evaluating KM information architectures, and developing appropriate KM strategies for complex organizations. PSGL 6000 Sustainable Human Systems Students will learn to think systematically through the study of the systemic structure and values that underlie the modern world view. Alternative, emerging world views focused on sustainable structures will be emphasized. Systems thinking and a systems perspective will be developed through the study of environmental, cultural, and social systems. A critical perspective is emphasized throughout the course.

PSGL 6001 Power and Social Systems This course will focus on the relations between stakeholders’ interests, conflict, and power in large organizations and other human social systems. Power models and dynamics in the cultures of nations, communities, corporations, and small groups will be examined. Creative problem solving and reconciliation approaches are presented as means for effective and sustainable social transformation. A written critical analysis of existing power relationships in the social system of the students’ choice will be required. Cases, exercises, and group discussions are used throughout the course. IS 6010 Applied Research Methods IS 6010 is a course in applied research methods. Its principal objective is to help students deepen their understanding of research analysis techniques and become proficient users and consumers of modern statistical analysis procedures. Participants in this course will learn to apply the scientific method to investigations of research problems arising from observations of social problems and organization-based phenomena. Students will study acceptable methods for collecting, organizing, analyzing, and testing data; and for communicating findings in a professional research environment.

Professional Certificate Programs Hawai‘i Pacific University offers three certificate programs in organizational change for current students and busy professionals who wish to upgrade their skills in change management and organizational development. These certificates may be completed on campus, online, or as an in-house customized professional development program. Organizations that have used the Professional Certificate in Organizational Change and Development to develop change leaders include Booz Allen Hamilton, Hilton Hotels, Colonial Bank and Financial Services, the Weinberg Foundation, and Northern Mariannas Community College. These organizations have developed customized programs of study in their workplaces for their leaders and managers. The professional certificate is awarded upon completion of 12 credits at the graduate level. The time line and schedule for completing these courses depends on individual student needs and circumstances. Students may also use certificate courses to satisfy certain master degree requirements.

It is important to note that this Certificate Program is designed to be completed in addition to the program requirements for a master’s degree program of studies. Students may enter this Professional Certificate in Consulting Program upon completion of the 30 graduate credits in their respective graduate degree program. Admission Requirements Students may start the MA/OC program in fall, winter, spring, or summer.
When reviewing an application for graduate admission, the Admission Committee considers several factors including: • Completion of a U.S. bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent) from an accredited college or university • Undergraduate grade point average • Letters of recommendation • Personal statement/essay (Students interested in starting the MA/OC program immediately following their undergraduate program should apply in their senior year.) A holistic approach is used, and no one factor will exclude an applicant from consideration. The University is seeking students who have demonstrated the ability and motivation to do graduate-level work.

Once accepted, applicants to Hawai‘i Pacific University have access to HPU Pipeline, the online resource for services and information.
Hawai‘i Pacific University reviews applications on a “rolling” admissions cycle. An admission decision is made after the required documents for an applicant have been received. However, it is highly recommended that a student begin the admission process at least three months prior to the start of the term in which the applicant wishes to begin graduate studies. For policy on graduate-level transfer credits, contact the Graduate Admissions Office. Application Procedures All applicants must submit the following documents to the address shown below: • A signed and completed application form • U.S. $50.00 nonrefundable application fee • An official/certified transcript from every college or university attended, showing course work, grades, and conferral of bachelor’s degree. Official transcripts must be sent directly from the college or university to Hawai‘i Pacific University. • Two original and current letters of recommendation submitted by individuals who can attest to applicant’s ability to do graduate work (e.g. former professors, academic counselors, employers, business colleagues). Recommendation forms and military evaluations may be used in lieu of letters. • Personal Statement/Essay describing your academic and career goals • Applicants to Hawai‘i Pacific University’s graduate programs who have taken the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) should have their scores sent directly to the Graduate Admissions Office. • Applicants to Hawai‘i Pacific University’s graduate certificate program should submit the Certificate Application (pages 1920) of the graduate application form and submit official transcripts.
Additional Requirements for International Students: • Mail certified copies or have official copies of transcripts sent directly from postsecondary school or testing authority, including an English translation. • Submit a completed and signed Hawai‘i Pacific University Statement of Financial Sponsorship Form. • Submit an original or certified copy of a bank statement or letter showing that you, your sponsor, or guardian(s)have an account which provides sufficient funds to cover at least one year of study at Hawai‘ Pacific University. (This is a requirement of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement). • English Proficiency Requirements: HPU requires a TOEFL score of 80 (iBT), 550 (PBT) or IELTS score of 6.0 overall and a 5.5 on each band, OR completion of Level 112 at the ELS Language Center located on the Hawai‘i Pacific University Campus. Students without the requisite TOEFL or IELTS score should submit applications to ELS and HPU. Students in ELS levels 110, 111, and 112 may enroll concurrently in HPU evening courses. Accepted international students must then take the following documents to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country to apply for an F-1 Student Visa: Letter of Acceptance to Hawai‘i Pacific University, I-20 form issued by Hawai‘i Pacific University, copy of the Financial Sponsorship Form, original and current bank statement showing sufficient funds (as above), and TOEFL results, if applicable. LOCATIONS: Hawai'i Pacific University combines the excitement of an urban downtown campus with the serenity of a traditional campus. The main campus is located in downtown Honolulu, the business and financial center of the Pacific. Eight miles away, situated on 135 acres in Kane'ohe, the Hawai'i Loa campus is the site of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and the College of Natural and Computational Sciences. HPU is also affiliated with the Oceanic Institute, a 56-acre aquaculture research facility at Makapu'u Point, which offers students research and hands-on opportunities. These three distinctive sites are conveniently linked by shuttle.
