I only get to do this once. Let’s make it count. Sure, college is about getting a great education. But shouldn’t it be more? I want an experience. One that goes beyond textbooks and lectures. I want to roll up my sleeves and dig into my education… to see different cultures through the eyes of new friends from around the world. I want to take an intellectual adventure alongside those who share a passion for new ideas, new frontiers and new cultures. I’m ready to stretch… to engage history in a place where so much of it has been made and to see the future through a lens I haven’t yet created. I’m ready to break away from ordinary… to break through my comfort zone. I want to stand up for what I believe in… to be counted for what I don’t. When it comes to college, I refuse to compromise. I’m looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will change me forever. I’m ready for a great adventure.
At HPU, your adventure is waiting. 1

Within months, the four HPU students succeeded in patenting the technology, establishing a firm and finding investors and facilities. Today, the students send handpicked images to a facility in Italy to be embedded in local, full-grain leather that emerges as wallets, bags, Apple product cases and more. In February 2013, the product was unveiled at a fashion expo in New York.

Diving into a natural lab Calvin Sondker is pursuing his intellectual passion for environmental law. A native of Washington State, Calvin says living and studying in Hawai‘i offers him a natural lab for exploring issues of overpopulation, limited resources and stewardship. At HPU, he joined the Green Club and Law Club and interned at the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, where he worked in the field on stream restoration. His courses have opened his eyes to new viewpoints. “I’m in a Global Climate Change class with people from Australia, Singapore and the Marshall Islands,” he says. “We talk about how different areas of the world deal with energy needs, and what is appropriate in the East and West. It’s amazing.” Calvin hopes to work for an environmental law firm or Earth Justice, a nonprofit litigator.

Gideon Berger, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, is working with students on research related to inhibiting the growth of new blood vessels in cancer treatment. “My undergraduate students do the lion’s share of research. We have a strong natural sciences program where students use our dynamic location to explore everything from biology, oceanography, environmental science, computer science, chemistry and more. Our students walk away with field experience and with a letter of recommendation from a faculty member who really knows them and what they can do. Because of this, many of our students go onto prestigious graduate and medical schools.”

At HPU we don’t ask, “What’s your major?” Instead, we ask, “What’s your adventure?” Sure, you’ll need a laptop, your favorite pen and a notebook to study at
HPU. But a passport is also high on the school supplies list. Students come to HPU to learn alongside classmates from around the world. And many of
them take their cultural journey one step further by pursuing study abroad opportunities worldwide. As an HPU student, you can choose from more than 300 study abroad programs in nearly 70 countries.

Shortly after Ladimir Geake (BSW/Social Science) transferred to HPU from the University of Pittsburgh, he traveled to Lyon, France, to study
culture and language, international law and economic contracts. But his adventures didn’t stop there. His senior year, he was named a con-

he worked with Senator Tom Harkin. It was a match made in heaven. Ladimir, whose parents are both deaf, wants to work with people with disabilities. He knew Harkin had authored the landmark 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and he wanted to learn more about it. “It was

“This was probably the best year of my life. Before coming to Japan, I had no idea what I wanted to be, or do in the future. I had no confidence in myself to decide, or ask for help. But making the decision to come to Japan was the starting point, where I gripped my future and what I had to work with and just took off running. It was probably the first decision I made for myself, instead of reacting to life and convenience. Now, slowly, my vision for the future is coming into focus, and I know who I am.” Erica studied intermediate to advanced Japanese language and cultural studies at Nagoya University of Foreign Studies. John Hart, Professor of Communications, is a CLIO award winner, known as the Academy Awards for the advertising industry. A confidant of the late guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan for almost a decade, Hart held positions at major radio stations and record companies and worked directly with many major recording artists. Hart’s scholarly research is in the area of myth in popular culture. He has been invited to testify to the United States Senate and the National Parks Service regarding the public policy issues of the naming of national monuments. He also was a featured guest on the History Channel’s Live from Pearl Harbor Emmy nominated special.
Thomas Kohler, Assistant Professor of Marketing, founded travel2change, a nonprofit organization that encourages students to travel and bring about change in other communities around the world. As part of travel2change and other projects, Kohler and his students focus on research related to social media strategies for organizations. His work has been published in journals such as the MIS Quarterly, Technovation and the Harvard Business Manager. Kohler holds a PhD in Business Administration from the Innsbruck University School of Management in Austria.
Lorraine Marais, Associate Professor of Social Work, received her social work training at Western Michigan University and the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. She has extensive experience and expertise in macro social work and program evaluation, and has led student trips to South Africa.
Jerome Feldman is an art historian with a PhD from Columbia University. He’s also an internationally recognized expert on tribal art of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, having conducted field studies in remote islands of Indonesia and Polynesia. In 2004, he was named the Slade Visiting Professor at Cambridge, one of the most prestigious honors in academia for art historians.

Brenda Jensen, Associate Professor of Biology, is doing groundbreaking research with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA designated HPU as one of two agencies to respond to marine mammals stranded in the Hawaiian Islands. In 2010, Jensen and her team recovered a rare Longman’s beaked whale, which had never been seen in the Hawaiian Islands and is one of eight specimens of its kind to be seen on the planet since 1890. As of 1999, the species was only known from two skulls, one in a museum in Australia and another in Somalia. No photographs of either a dead or living Longman’s beaked whale existed. The HPU team was able to conduct the most in-depth examination ever done on the mammal, and in the process revealed an infection with a deadly virus that may affect the mortality rate of marine mammals the world over. Jessica Jacob, who pursued her undergraduate and graduate degrees at HPU, is working with Jensen on a manuscript about the rescue and research.

The position drew him into the heart of the APEC 2011 meetings in Honolulu. He served as personal translator to Peruvian President Ollanta Humala, accompanying him to meetings with leaders, including President Barack Obama. Along the way, he created opportunities for HPU students to get involved. He also leads student trips to New York for the Model United Nations Conference.
