The year 2020 will undoubtedly be remembered for the challenges that we all faced: a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, public and private struggles, and more. But I hope it will also be remembered for all that we learned about what truly matters in our homes and in our communities—that we are resilient together, and that we rely on each other. At HPA, we undoubtedly rely on our incredible faculty and staff to deliver an exceptional education; we rely on our extended ‘ohana for support; and we rely on our students to embrace the HPA experience, and to bring life and meaning to the work that we do. As you will read in the pages ahead, 2020 was a year in which judicious investment in our physical and technological infrastructure brought tangible improvements to life across both campuses. It was also a year in which our alumni ‘ohana, HPA families, community foundations, and others believed in the value of our work here, and generously supported our efforts. From capstone courses to sustainability momentum, from a thriving arts program to cultivating balance in all things—HPA continues to deliver a truly exceptional education.

Though these are trying times for us all, we know that we are stronger and more connected for having carried on through this together. I look forward to sharing more good news on our progress across many fronts in the months and years ahead—as we meet our ambitious sustainability goals, increase our capacity to provide financial aid for students who need it, and continue to provide the kind of education that enriches lives and shapes communities. With aloha,

Operating Results HPA finished Fiscal Year 2020 with operating revenue of $19.1 million and expenses of $21.8 million. This deficit is not unusual for a secondary school of our size, and is largely the result of an institutional commitment to invest in program and in facilities, as well as a loss in summer revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, the deficit does indeed represent the opportunity and the challenge before us as we work to match our vision for and belief in our school with a corresponding base of support. In fiscal year 2020, tuition and fees covered 76.4% of our expenses. Our endowment supported 14.6% of HPA’s operational expenses, with an additional 5.9% funded by income from Auxiliary Programs, and 3.2% from contributions to the HPA Fund. Between the endowment and the HPA Fund, past and present donors collectively provide more than 17% of the resources necessary to provide

students with the unsurpassed opportunities HPA affords. HPA recruits world-class instructors by offering competitive compensation, benefits, and professional development opportunities to facilitate a broad curriculum and enriching academic, athletic, and global learning experience for students. Costs of compensating and providing benefits to our employees comprise more than 65% of operating expenses. Other expenses supporting the HPA experience include utilities, insurance, academic and student support, dining services, health and wellness services, information technology services, and facilities management costs. Furthermore, HPA continues to invest in the capital renewal of our physical plant and technology infrastructure.

Capital Expenditures

Enrollment and Financial Aid

Capital Expenditures in fiscal year 2020 totaled nearly $3.5 million. The facilities team managed dozens of major projects including a remodel of Taylor Commons, roof repairs, new ADA pathways, and continued energy efficiency and sustainability projects, which will help reduce institutional expenses in the long-term. Capital expenditures also included classroom and athletic equipment, kitchen equipment, and IT needs.

For the 2019-2020 school year, HPA enrolled 110 K-5 students, 91 Middle School students, 215 Upper School day students, and 116 boarding students. In the Upper School, 270 students were from Hawai‘i Island, 9 from other Hawaiian Islands, 51 from the mainland U.S. and Alaska, and 82 were international students.

Philanthropy

Financial aid for non-employee children and tuition remission for children of faculty and staff in total exceeded $4.5 million, allowing roughly half of the student body to attend HPA with financial aid.

Donors to Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy contributed more than $4 million to HPA during fiscal year 2020, including $603,469 to the HPA Fund, $135,126 to the endowment, and $3,532,552 for capital projects and restricted giving.

Endowment The endowment is an important resource for HPA, providing more than 14% of the revenue needed to run the school. It is made up of externally-managed endowed trusts, funds designated by our board to function as a permanent endowment, and approximately 80 funds established by alumni, parents, and friends to provide permanent support to the school. The total value of HPA’s endowment is approximately $45 million. Of this, $24 million is controlled by HPA and its board of trustees, and $21 million is managed externally. HPA is also one of four designated beneficiaries of the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust. The total market value of HPA’s share is roughly $35 million, and the annual distribution in FY2020 was approximately $566,000. A majority of the trust’s assets are composed of undeveloped pasture land, which accounts for distributions at a level under typical market returns. Investments for donor restricted and board designated funds are overseen by HPA’s Investment Committee, which is made up of trustees with significant investment and financial expertise. The investments of the endowment are managed to provide for the long-term needs of the school. HPA’s endowment spending policy and investment strategy share a goal of minimizing the volatility of endowment revenue available to fund operating expenses. The amount spent in any one year is based on the market value of the endowment (as determined by a twelve-quarter trailing average) multiplied by our endowment draw rate of 4.5% but within a range not less than 95% of the amount spent in the prior year, or greater than 105% of the prior year spending. This formula slows down or buffers the effect of any market rise or fall on what is spent from the endowment to support operations. In a volatile year for markets, the HPA endowment returned 4.36% for the fiscal year. HPA’s endowment asset allocation represents diverse holdings focused on value preservation over time, including investments in domestic and international equities, fixed income, alternative investments, and cash.

GIVING: MAHALO NUI LOA!

We have continued to feel the aloha from our collective HPA ‘ohana near and far. Universally, this year has brought us closer together, and has reestablished what matters and means the most for each of us. HPA has navigated these waters well because of your loyalty and belief that what HPA stands for matters. Thank you for being Ka Makani.

We are looking forward to a new year of promise and light. While 2021 will be a welcome new horizon, we have achieved and learned a lot this past year, and I’m happy to reflect on the good that we have done together. Through our 2020 school year, we answered demands for creativity and held true to course in our foundational priorities. With your help, the HPA Fund raised more than $600,000, a result of building Alumni and Family participation. We were also grateful to launch two significant capital initiatives last fall: our campaign to restore Davies Memorial Chapel and extensive deferred maintenance work across campus. Thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends, we raised $450,000 of the $1,000,000 Chapel restoration goal, which includes endowing this cherished building on campus. We look forward to raising and ringing the bell with you all soon! And a transformative alumni gift enabled us to turn much needed attention to our upper campus with integral improvements to exteriors and walkways—breathing new life into our physical plant. Our Alu Mai auction last fall also helped us launch a crucial new campaign for financial aid at HPA: the Wai‘aka Initiative. In that first evening alone, we raised more than $215,000 to help open doors to a life-changing education for students who need assistance. The Wai‘aka Initiative speaks to the core of why we are committed to providing financial aid for a diverse student body. As we know, HPA provides a unique experience that is possible because of the melting pot of people who make up this special place. Just as the rivers and streams run and connect through the land around HPA, our students come from many different places and backgrounds, which enriches the HPA experience for all. In FY20 alone, through the Wai‘aka Initiative, we raised nearly $500,000 in financial aid support, resulting in our ability to help over 100 students attain the HPA experience. Mahalo nui for your generosity of spirit. Like our symbolic ‘ōhi‘a tree, HPA remains steadfast in core values and tradition. However, just as ka makani whips and whales across our campus at times, we are ever evolving and nimble with the journey ahead. We know where we have been and we look with excitement to where we are going—secure, resilient, and together. With gratitude and aloha,

H A NN A H HIND CA NDEL A RIO ’01 / DIRECTOR OF A DVA NCEMENT
