2018 ANNUAL REPORT

Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy’s fiscal year ending May 31, 2018 was one of financial health and stability. It was also a year in which we continued to make progress meeting the goals of our Strategic Plan, which compels us to marry the wisdom of our island home with a global purpose. We earnestly believe that Hawai‘i Island and HPA graduates have much to share with the world, and that our school and the HPA ‘ohana are at our best when we come together to support and serve the young people who will carry the lessons they learn here into the world.

Although global citizenship is not a concept that is unique to our school, HPA is uniquely and beautifully situated to make good on the promise of graduating responsible global citizens to create, lead, and thrive in tomorrow’s world. Indeed, our people, our place, and our history give us everything we need to succeed. Our HPA ‘ohana provides the foundation for everything that happens here. The faculty and staff dedicate themselves to nurturing and empowering our students, our students contribute their good faith participation in the process of building this community and expanding their own base of knowledge, and HPA parents, friends, and alumni across the globe enable this work with their aloha and their financial support.

Our place on this island informs and inspires everything that we do. We live and learn in a place of spectacular beauty, rich in biodiversity and in a culture that respects tradition and honors the land. You will read in the pages ahead about a generous gift from Jim Kennedy ’66, which is enabling us to take important steps toward becoming a model school for environmental sustainability. Becoming a school with such a focus better prepares HPA graduates to be innovators, change agents, and problem-solvers in a world that urgently needs them. It also strengthens our institutional

structures and ensures we continue to make progress on our own environmental impact while making a greater difference beyond our borders in the future. Jim’s gift is a testament both to this place and to our potential. Finally, we look to our history for guidance on the path ahead. James Taylor, whose leadership did much to shape the direction of HPA, wrote often of moral courage, service, and living a life of meaning. From his writings, we unearthed our core values of integrity, respect, pursuit of excellence, and wonder. As HPA continues to educate young women and men who represent a wide spectrum of backgrounds, talents, and passions, we hold these values in common, and we believe that by practicing these values together, we create habits that can shape our lives and our collective future. The 2018-19 school year is my last as Head of School at HPA. My years of service to the school have been richly rewarding, often humbling, and inspiring. I look to the future with gratitude for this place and confidence in its promise. With aloha,

FIN A NCI A L S: FUNDING THE HPA E X PERIENCE

Operating Results HPA finished FY2018 with operating revenue of $19.02 million and expenses of $18.88 million, resulting in a $140,000 operating surplus. The surplus reflects a responsible approach to spending while continuing to honor our commitment to develop and invest in our program. In fiscal year 2018, tuition and fees covered 79.5% of our expenses. Our endowment supported 11.6% of HPA’s operational expenses, with an additional 7.1% funded by income from Auxiliary Programs, and 1.8% from contributions to the HPA Fund. Between the endowment and the HPA Fund, past and present donors collectively provide 13.4% of the resources necessary to provide students with the unsurpassed opportunities HPA affords.

HPA recruits world-class instructors by offering competitive compensation, benefits, and professional development opportunities to facilitate a broad curriculum and enriching academic, athletic, and global learning experience for students. Costs of compensating and providing benefits to our employees comprise nearly 65% of operating expenses. Other expenses supporting the HPA experience include utilities, insurance, interest, academic and student support, dining services, health and wellness services, information technology services, and facilities management costs. Furthermore, HPA continues to invest in the capital renewal of our physical plant and technology infrastructure.

Endowment The endowment is an important resource for HPA, providing 12% of the revenue needed to run the school. It is made up of externally-managed endowed trusts, funds designated by our board to function as a permanent endowment, and approximately 80 funds established by alumni, parents, and friends to provide permanent support to the school. HPA is also one of four designated beneficiaries of the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust. As of December 31, 2017, the total market value of HPA’s share was $34.9 million, and the annual distribution was roughly $377,000. A majority of the trust’s assets are composed of undeveloped pasture land, which accounts for distributions at a level under typical market returns. Investments for donor restricted and board designated funds are overseen by HPA’s Investment Committee, which is made up of trustees with significant investment and financial expertise. The investments of the endowment are managed to provide for the long-term needs of the school. HPA’s endowment spending policy and investment strategy share a goal of minimizing the volatility of endowment revenue available to fund operating expenses. The amount spent in any one year is based on the market value of the endowment (as determined by a twelve-quarter trailing average) multiplied by our endowment draw rate of 4.5% but within a range not less than 95% of the amount spent in the prior year, or greater than 105% of the prior year spending. This formula slows down or buffers the effect of any market rise or fall on what is spent from the endowment to support operations. During a year of strong markets, the HPA endowment returned 12.25% for the fiscal year, outperforming a comparable benchmark of 12.02%. Value at May 31, 2018 was $26.4 million. The value of HPA’s share of beneficial trusts managed externally was $21.8 million for FY2018. HPA’s endowment asset allocation represents diverse holdings focused on value preservation over time, including investments in domestic and international equities, fixed income, alternative investments, and cash.

GIVING: MAHALO NUI LOA!

Giving: Mahalo nui loa!

Each year, it is our great pleasure to formally celebrate and acknowledge the generosity of our community. Though the reasons for giving to HPA encompass a full spectrum of interests and motivations, we are all connected by a common thread: we are Ka Makani. Our place on this island and the people who belong to HPA, both past and present, are what make our school great. I will never forget a moment last year, when I was driving with my six-year-old son, Axel, through town. He was in his second semester of Kindergarten at HPA. He was looking out his backseat window gazing up at the green hills above Waimea, and chanting to himself. I listened closely and realized he was chanting Hole Waimea. Every word, clear, perfect, and with passion. This little person, full of certainty and wonder, is such a reminder of what is important and of what lives on at HPA through the generations. We offer open landscapes, empower individual interests, and remember where we are from, where we are now, and where we are going. I swallowed the swelling of proud-mother emotion, and joined him. He looked at me in the mirror, smiled his big smile of surprise, and we continued together. Ka Makani is forever. The affection and aloha that so many of our alumni feel for this place is real, and as we continue to look towards whole school sustainability, translating those feelings into action is paramount. The HPA Fund is absolutely vital to HPA’s fiscal health and stability. A strong tradition of yearly giving will contribute to a fruitful HPA experience for every single student. Last year, HPA parents answered the call of class captains and HPA Fund Chair Heidi Emmons P ‘17 P ‘19, who inspired our ‘ohana to raise a combined $205,573, with 40% participation to support financial aid, faculty salaries, technology, and our innovative curriculum, among other areas. We extend a sincere mahalo to all of you! The generosity of our alumni spirit was felt everywhere during 2017-18. From new traditions like Ka Makani Alumni Pinning Ceremony, to the incredible turnout at Alumni Reunion, our aloha was palpable. Alumni increased their participation from 4% in FY2016-17 to 6% in FY2017-18! I am proud to be a part of this place and embrace my new role as director of advancement. We look forward to working with all of you in the year ahead! Me ke aloha,
