Ask the Trainer by KC Carlberg Here in Hawaii we can train all year round. Spring is particularly fun in that a few sports kick into full gear, namely paddling and triathlon. Many of my readers are involved in these sport and have a few questions about training and diet. Let’s get to it then: How can I develop speed, agility and stamina without spending lots of time in the gym? If you are looking for an edge in your racing, if you want to be leaner, faster and stronger, then Kettlebells is your answer. The short, intense Kettlebell workout will help develop your strength, muscle economy and muscular endurance that will transform your performance. Kettlebells are used widely for conditioning for a variety of sports. It allows you to use your body as an integrated unit with time saving functional workouts. Kettlebell workouts use whole body, multidirectional moves that require less time than traditional workouts and are the ultimate fat-blaster. You can burn up to 22 calories per minute during a kettlebell workout. The kettlebell technique requires your body to synchronize, with the muscles fibers and muscles working together to maintain stability and balance as you swing the kettlebell through the range of motion. Because the load on a kettlebell is off-center, it requires more agility to lift it than a dumbbell. This helps to develop a strong core and balance which will help you maintain stability integral for efficiency and power. For example, in cycling, you need strong leg, core and upper body muscles. Studies have shown that the more force your hips and legs can generate relative to your weight, the faster your bike will move down the road. Additionally, the fast paced workouts help to condition your cardiovascular system much like an interval workout. These high intensity workouts allow your body to adapt and be able to adjust to a higher lactate threshold which translates into speed and endurance.
My husband and I are in our late 50’s and are very active. I paddle and he does triathlon, however we don’t look like it. He has a belly and I have cellulite. What gives? Well this is a twofold answer that you may or may not want to hear. You are a little older and your metabolism has slowed down a bit and you are losing about 5% lean mass each year. The answer, exercise more and eat less. Simple…. Yes. Easy… no. Diet plays a big role in how our body develops. The goal is to eat whole, fresh food (vegetables, fruits, whole grains) that your body can easily break down and use right away. This will help not only with rebuilding the muscle, but in recovery after hard workouts, in our body’s ability to absorb the nutrients from the food which will show in your skin, in how you feel, sleep and function each day. Furthermore, your activity should be balanced and focus not only on cardiovascular exercises but also stretching (flexibility) and strength training. You need to lift weights to keep up with your muscle loss each year. The diet should take care of the big belly but the cellulite is a little different. Cellulite is just plain old fashioned fat and can appear on your body at any age. Yikes! We have strands of connective tissue that separate fat cells into compartments and also connect fat to skin. In women, these fibers form a honeycomb-shaped pattern, which when there is more fat they have a tendency to bulge and give us that cottage cheese, dimpled orange skin look. Men on the other hand have horizontal running fibers that hold the fat in. Not fair. Over time our bodies change and the connective tissue thickens with age, skin gets thinner and the cellulite is more apparent. Ug, the outcome sounds dismal. Can you get rid of it? Are we doomed? Well you do have a few choices. You can try liposuction…suck that fat right out and look fabulous. Think about it – it is expensive, painful and just promotes fat to pop up in an even more unflattering location on your body. Not a good option. The other choice is plain old hard work. With the right exercise and diet plan you can lose fat and gain muscle that will smooth out
the skin and give it a more taut appearance. Fat lose will only shrink the fat cells, but an exercise program focusing on the lower body (lunges, squats, abduction, adduction, and more) is the key. If you are consistent, you could see results within 8 weeks. But think of it more as a lifestyle than spot reducing. By and large coming to terms and accepting who and what we are is critical. My suggestion, go work out and make it fun. The more you move your body the better you will feel guaranteed.
Whether you want to lose weight, run faster or climb Mount Everest, a personalized program is your best bet in achieving those goals. The hard work is always worth the effort in being successful. Let me know how I can help you with your journey and email any questions you may have to “Ask the Trainer” at TryFitness@hawaii.rr.com. And remember “PERSISTENT CONSISTENCY” is the key to success. Until next time, train hard, laugh often, love passionately and have fun.

2014 Ironman Los Cabos
By Amanda Shell
LOS CABOS, MEXICO – In the sweltering heat of the Baja Peninsula, 1,200 triathletes pushed their physical abilities to the fullest at the 2014 Ford Ironman Los Cabos triathlon on Sunday, March 30, 2014. Multinational triathletes representing 49 countries competed for 50 age-group slots in the 2014.
Ironman World Championship scheduled for October 11, 2014, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The 2014 Ford Ironman Los Cabos race was held as a physical and personal milestone as well as a qualifying passage to the world championship. Completion of the Ironman Los Cabos, alone, was an incredible feat. The Los Cabos course began with a 2.4-mile swim in the Sea of Cortes, followed by a 112-mile cycling route, ending with a 26.2 mile run. Amongst the 1,200 competitors, Hawaii was wellrepresented by an elite few. Armando Espinoza, Kai Nakamura, Lawrence Ollice, and Alan Priest completed the 2014 Ironman Los Cabos triathlon with aloha spirit. Ollice crossed his first Ironman finish line, and ranked 69th in his division – an exceptional success as a first-timer. This triathlon marked Nakamura’s seventh Ironman competition. Los Cabos was his course of choice because of its strong similarities to Kona.

Running ON Clouds I wasn't a picky person for running shoes at all. The only two things I used to care about on a running shoe was its colors and comfortability. I never had "that" specific shoe that I love. Until two years ago, when my husband told me about a shoe company called On that was looking for people to work at their booth during Ironman Hawaii 2012 expo. I am not a big fan of working at expos, however, I was planning to go watch the race, and he told me the shoes look very interesting. So I decided to take the opportunity and work for them during the expo. To my surprise the On booth was the coolest booth I ever seen at an expo. If you were there that year, you will remember. It was the booth made with local palm trees and pieces wood, very organic. I loved the atmosphere they created on that booth! Then I saw the shoes. They looked very different from any shoes that I have tried in the past. I loved the colors and the design. The owners of the company were there and I asked what was the technology behind the shoes. They told me" "First you have to try it on! And feel the difference." So they gave me a pair and when I put it on my first impression was "feels different, and it's comfortable". When I came back to Oahu, I went for a 10 miles run with my Nike shoes, at that time that shoe was my favorite training shoe. After the run, my legs were sore. I did not run much during Ironman week and I thought my lack of fitness was making me sore. The next day, I ran with the On shoes, and it felt great! I didn't feel my legs pounding the ground as much. The next day I tried to wear my nikes again, but just from the first steps I felt the ground, I realized that the ON shoes were so much better. That day I decided to give away all my old running shoes, and start running just on On shoes. And since then I haven't had an injury and I also had all my PRs in 5k, 10k, half marathon, and marathons! I know we all have different feet and taste for shoes. But I highly recommened you to try and feel the difference, because just like they told me "you gotta feel the difference for yourself!"

Feet Hurt!
by Brad Yates, www.bradyates.com
A time to reflect on the pain, seek awareness and respond in a proactive manner. Sounds good and smart.
Unfortunately, I ignored the red flags and pushed on. I wore only a selection of MBT Trainers (Masai Barefoot Technology), internalized the discomfort and walked slower. Such is the case of an athlete who is used to playing through pain and unable to recognize the need to adjust. Looking back, when I lost my balance on the SUP board I went into the gym. When walking downtown to do Vasper became a burden, I gradually stopped going. Over time my workouts shortened and my fitness suffered.
And then came a message from the editor of Hawaii Sport, they wanted me to write an article about The Shoe Doctor. They picked me because my feet and knees were, in their words, “really screwed up and they wanted to see if these custom orthotic insoles could help someone like me.” I agreed. The resistance hit and it took me a while to follow up, complete the process, get the insoles and write this piece. THE PROCESS
Met with Clayton at the Running Room on Kapahulu or Runner’s Hi in Aiea. He analyzed my feet, used advanced 3-D digital technology to create my orthotic insole. I returned in two weeks to have the insole shaped in my shoe and fine–tuned for each foot. I wore the insoles home. PROPER SUPPORT
This custom made insole is designed to make sure that the three arches on each foot are properly supported and aligned. Clayton cautioned me that it could take one to two weeks for my arches to adjust to the insole and during this time there could be some discomfort. Review
My insoles have been an instant success. I experienced no discomfort. I wear the insoles at work and play, and the pain in my feet has all but disappeared. An added bonus is that my feet seem to have become better aligned. I can now wear a variety of shoes without the insoles and without discomfort.
“In short, I believe that The Shoe Doctor has a great product and I appreciate the difference the insoles have made in my ability to work and play and maintain my fitness level without pain in my feet.” HITTING THE RIGHT NOTES
For the most part we know our fellow athletes from the sports world, in bikegear, shorts, running shoes or bathing suits, but it is fun to get to know what these people do in “real” life...what is sport not real life?
We found two people to interview about what they do besides sports:
KATE JOHNSON My first love is cycling, with Triathlon a close second. In my first life, I took up cycling with a boyfriend whose cousin was riding in the 1984-86 Race Across America (RAAM). He bought me my first bike, a prototype Cannondale when they first came out with a women's specific fat-tube frame. I rode for several years, just recreationally, until a crash in 1989 when I fractured my collarbone and a few other areas and called it quits. In 1999, I participated in my first sprint tri on a whim, and was hooked. After moving to Hawaii in 2000, I gave up triathlon in favor of cycling in 2003. So, my long answer to a short question: I have been cycling seriously for about 14 years. I am now getting back into triathlon after about a 10 year hiatus. Hmmm, favorite bike? That's like
asking me which of my kids I like the best. My Merlin road bike (which is really a tri-frame, built custom for someone else), which I purchased in 2001 or 2002 has been with me through everything...from crashes and climbs to joy rides through France. But my brand new Niner Jet 9 Carbon has catapulted my mountain biking skills to a level where I really love off road riding now. For work I am a "jack of all trades, master of none". I am a part-time musician with The Royal Hawaiian Band. I play clarinet with them, and very infrequently now, sing with them. I also work/coach part time for Boca Hawaii. Though I do not currently have a position as a choir director, choral music is my passion. I am currently learning to play classical guitar. My favorite piece of music...oh my, again, that's a tough one. I love to play Aaron Copland's Clarinet Concerto, and for choral works, it'd have to be Mendelssohn's monumental work, "Elijah". Favorite stretch of road for cycling? What ever stretch of road I'm on...But Tantalus makes me smile...either through the pain of the climb or the thrill of the descent with views to boot! I have to admit that my practicing takes a back-seat to my training right now. I spend about 30-40 minutes a day with my guitar, and about the same with my clarinet. Sometimes I miss a day. Training, because I'm shooting for Honu this year, takes a lot more time than that. I have to say thank you to my family, my very supportive husband, Loren, and my two patient and beautiful daughters, Amy & Kathryn. They help keep me grounded. A PS. from Kate: I am no longer doing Honu or any tris for that matter due to injury. So I am gearing up for whatever cycling races come along, and a summer at 10,000ft in Crested Butte, CO for a music festival and mountain biking.
I did my first 21K. It took me a while to get in the pool and kind of learn to swim (I still can't swim but that's how I get to my favorite part of triathlon, the bike). I consider myself a triathlete with a running problem. Even though I may not look like I can't run fast I love the challenge of improving my times. My dream goals are under 5hrs at Honu and a sub 40min 10K. After three years dreaming about a Trek Speed concept finally I was able to upgrade to one of those with electronic shifting. I also love riding my Giant tcr Advance SL0 with DI2, they said once you go electronic you will never go back to mechanic. My favorite road to ride my bike is in NSW Australia from Wollongong to Kaima point with the bunch at 5:30 and watching the sunrise. I usuROBERTO WHARTON ally train anywhere from 11 to 15 hours, maxing As long as I remember I've been involved with around 20 hours before Honu. sport and music. My first contact with music was solfege (a music education method, ed) My favorite of music? Ummm! Way to many but it when I was 8yrs old, also I started playing is between Tchaikovsky symphony 4 and Mahler baseball. Long story short I didn't get involved symphony number 2. Back in the day I used to with endurance sport until 2008 or 2009 when practice music for two hours or more daily.

Retracing Routledge Previously we brought you the story of Susie Stephens who is in the process of Retracing Routledge. Routledge is an avid traveller from her hometown, and Susie’s first leg, running through England has been completed, and you can read about it below. The second leg, biking in South America, is going on right now as you read this.
Tell us a little bit about your run: The run itself was tough in ways that I could never have predicted. Overall it was an amazing experience -- difficult to put into words, but I can definitely say it was full of emotional and physical highs and lows! I felt fairly well-prepared going into the run. Of course in the days leading up to any event a few questions popped into my mind, but those were the moments when I had to remain mentally focused. I had read a number of books about ultra running, poured over many websites, listened to podcasts late at night, and discussed the subject with various people from around the world who had undertaken similar challenges. In the end there is nothing quite like first hand experience, and yes, I now understand one recurring theme that I read about: the highs and lows of ultra running. It's a roller coaster and you just have to hold on tight and stay onboard! What was the greatest challenge? By far the greatest challenge was trying to accommodate and alleviate the soreness in my knees that started around day 4. When we decided to change the planned route and go more 'off-road' the softer ground definitely helped, but the wet conditions and mud in some areas created a whole new set of challenges -- like staying upright! How was the weather? The weather was actually very cooperative! But the mild winter in the UK
presented a few extra challenges, such as flooding in Oxfordshire and extra muddy footpaths! It's hard to say whether I would have preferred snow or ice, since those conditions are equally challenging to run in! I'm not complaining at all -- the weather was great for February in England!!
Were you close to giving up at any point? I wouldn't have given up, but walked or hobbled my way if I'd had to! Butwhen my knees first flared up I was scared that I might not physically be able to keep going! The thought of not completing the run and disappointing so many people drove me to keep going and finish what I had started!
What was your mileage/km. per day on your longest run day? There were two long days of 32 miles each. What kind of people did you meet on your way? I was very lucky to be accompanied by members of Darlington Harriers and Athletics Club and also the cross-country team from Hummersknott Academy (my old school) on the first day. On day 3 I was able to connect with my cousin Andrew who is a member of Otley Athletic Club and in training for the Edinburgh marathon. It worked out perfectly for him since we turned the day into his Sunday long run basically! In Northamptonshire I was supported by people on horseback, cyclists, and a solo runner, someone just trying to get back into running. Further south in Oxfordshire I was accompanied by a group of local runners who had a varied background, one in particular was training for the London marathon. On the very last day a lady who had just finished her daily run heard I was coming down the road and she ran back to meet me! It was great to have company for the very last section, which included a short but steep hill! All in all it was a a mixture,
and quite often when I stopped to cross roads I would chat with cyclists or people walking who often just said, “Good Luck!” Tell us how it is going with your project: The fundraising for Easter Island/ Rapa Nui has started well but we still have a long way to go towards the total amount needed for the BioMax and we need as much help as possible! The BioMax is a special sewage digesting unit that is greatly needed on the island where there is currently no real sewage treatment aside from cesspools and septic tanks that are nearly full! The BioMax will help because it produces grey water, reducing the need for fresh water from the wells and aquifer for outdoor uses so that more of it can be used for drinking! The next part of the challenge is the bike ride across South America, and the fundraising continues as we go! Please see our JustGiving page for further details. Thank you!

Team Hawaii Sport Reports Sharon’s Ride, Run & Walk 2014 January 26, 2014 Kapiolani Community College By: Zara Nguyen
10K Women’s Stefy Matsumura 44:53 10K - Men’s Ethan Mcintosh 37:37
5K - Women’s Jeanine Nakakura 25:33 Sharon’s Run/Ride is held across the nation in efforts to 5K - Men’s raise awareness for Epilepsy and to raise funds for the Thomsen Kristopher 18:02 Epilepsy Foundation. You may choose to walk 1 mile, run 5K/10K, ride 35km/75km/100km. Various distances makes this event fun and friendly to participants of all levels. There was even a Keiki (kids) bike safety course. The 10K course started at the walking path to the entrance to Diamond Head Crater across from Kapiolani Community College. The race route started along the walking path and went up to where the parking of Diamond Head Crater started, then came back down, then into the Kahala neighbourhood, then back to Kapiolani Community College where the finish line awaited. With the exception of the hill up towards Diamond Head Crater parking, the rest of the route was very flat. The event was held on an extremely nice and sunny day in late January. This was a casual, fun run (or ride, for some) with many generous volunteers setting up and at aid stations. I hope to participate in this event again in the future. Honolulu Rainbow Ekiden March 8, 2014 Kapiolani Park to Diamond Head and back By: Courtney Osaki
Top Teams 1. Team Hawaii Sport 1:29:39 2. Men's Honolulu Runners 1:34:14 3. Marco Palooza 1:35:11
The Honolulu Rainbow Ekiden is a 25 km relay course from Kapiolani Park to Diamond Head lookout and back. Each team consisted of 5 members that ran 5 km each along the scenic course. The starting entertainment consisted of zumba and two official Ekiden cheerleading squads to hype up the crowd. After the race was over, runners refueled at Waikikitchen with local Hawaiian food. Hawaiian ribbon leis were used as sashes and every finisher got a T-Shirt, Medal, and discounts to events at the Honolulu Festival that weekend. This was truly one of the most friendly and fun races I have been a part of!

The Ford Island 10K Bridge Run is a fun race for everyone! Runners or walkers, military or non-military, kids or adults, everyone is invited to participate. The course is mostly flat, except for the bridge, and offered beautiful views of Ford Island and Pearl Harbor. It was a very family friendly course and everyone seemed to have fun. Finishers got a t-shirt, magnet from the Pacific Aviation Museum, bananas, and sweet bread.

Results from the Chase can be seen in our online issue: www.issuu.com/hawaiisportmag For a third year in a row, the same people who have been bringing you the famous Honolulu Marathon have brought you the shorter, but just as fun, Hapalua Half Marathon. The Hapalua, which means “half in Hawaiian, began at the famous Duke Kahanamoku statue in the heart of Waikiki. Runners then went all the way into Chinatown before turning around and running through downtown Honolulu. The hardest part was going around hilly Diamond Head at miles 10 and 11 but after that was over, it was all downhill to the finish line. This race has no time limit so runners and walkers are all welcomed. More than 3,000 runners completed the race this year and were treated to bananas, bagels, malasadas and of course, a well earned shiny medal at the finish line. Sign up early for this race and you will even receive a free in-training t-shirt! Overall this was a great race that I hope becomes a tradition in my running book. Looney Lagoon 5k Easter Egg and Earth Day Race April 19, 2014 Lagoon Drive By: Courtney Osaki On your mark, get set, hop! There were bunny ears and cottontails galore at this 5K that celebrated both Easter and Earth Day. This race was put on by Stamina which means it was eco-friendly. Timing chips were recycled, finisher medals were handmade by recycled materials and ceramic, and there was a shoe donation area after the race. The course was completely flat and runners got to pick up an Easter egg before crossing the finish line. Eggs were filled with organic candies or tickets for prizes such as Easter baskets or complimentary training sessions. It was fun for the whole family!

JAMBA JUICE Bananaman Chase 5K. by Zara Nguyen
My favorite costume this year was Pacman chasing after strawberry girl. Runner up would have been Buzzlight year. The race started at 7AM around Ala Moana Beach Park. 7AM can can be kind of hot in May! So, I can only imagine how excruciatingly hot running 3 miles in a huge costume was for these runners! What I enjoy about this race are the fun, wacky, and high spirited runners and walkers. This year’s bananamen were radio personalities from Star 101.9 and local TV station KHON. Let’s chase the bananaman again next year! Congrats to the winners who will receive a full year of JAMBA JUICE. Men 1. Fermin Villagran 15:24 2. Leandro Santillan 15:41 3. Tony Perez 16:10

North Shore Marathon 2014 April 6, 2014 North Shore, Oahu By: Zara Nguyen This was a fantastic race course, starting at Haleiwa to Kaena point, routed along Farrington Highway on the North side of Oahu. The race started at 5AM with crisp chilly winds. I enjoyed the first two hours of the course. We ran two loops around Haleiwa town and most of the runners were together. Two hours in, I could feel the heat creeping up as the sun started rising. Runners then started spacing out. At hour 3, it was scorching hot! About half of the time, I was running without any other runner in sight. Hour 4 came and I wanted to be done, done, done, son! Training for this race was rather difficult. As everyone enjoyed their holidays: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s… I was on a training schedule. The training schedule meant early Saturday long runs, watching my diet intake of certain food groups and increasing other food groups, leaving parties early and going to bed early each evening. Five months later, the work paid off as I came to check out this local’s race and its amazing course. What I found special to this race was the way the race took care of their runners. Everything was over the top: from the beautifully designed race bibs, to the food at the finish line, the hydration stations and finally, to the commentary finisher items. What makes this race great: 1) A flat course, no hills. 2) A beautiful scenic view of Mokuleia Beach for miles along the route 3) Beautifully designed finisher medal, beautiful tech men and women’s fit finisher shirts, a commentary finisher glass 4) Great hydration and food along the course. The food was provided by Yama’s Fishmarket, treating all finishers to a choice of beef or vegetarian chili and rice. What you may not enjoy about this race: 1) Hour 3 into the run usually gets pretty hot. 2) An early start on the North side of Oahu, and the drive there is even earlier. Zara’s tips for a successful run: 1) Drink more water than you normally. Once 8AM hits, you will dehydrate quick. 2) Pace yourself, you got 26.2 miles! 3) Plan your arrival on race day with extra cushion. The drive is farther than you think.

3 Short Questions
to Ben Williams who just recently won Strongman in Japan.
1. Where have you been? I've been living in Australia for the last 10 months racing and training. It was perfect preparation with tons of strong triathletes to train with and hot and humid weather. 2. How was your preperation for the Strongman? Preparation included more rest than usual, but also long training days in the heat. I just hoped that it would be a hot race! 3. Tell us a little bit about the race? The race was tough! The swim was beautiful, but a mass start was pretty hectic. The bike course was incredibly scenic. The island of Miyakojima is beautiful. The course was very windy and hilly, and started to get hot on the second half of the bike. The run was the hardest marathon I have ever raced. It was brutally hot, but even if it was cooler conditions the hills and wind made it very difficult. The best part of the race is the number of locals that come out. The farmers stop their work and come out to the road to cheer and the kids are all out playing instruments or displaying local dances. The whole town comes out and makes it feel very special.
