“My favorite place! Be there soon! Can’t wait!!!” – Lori Snow
I
n Angel Fire, small-town friendliness and cosmopolitan convenience make for a high-octane/high altitude cocktail. (We’re at 8,429 sun-drenched feet, but our sleek airport runway is even longer than that.) Would you like your fun shaken or stirred? Stir up your golf game on one of the highest ranked high-altitude golf courses in the country. Shake yourself up on heart-stopping ziplines, high-tech lifts, or nationally famous mountain bike trails. Tune in to a world-class chamber music festival. Northern New Mexico’s seasons come in four distinct flavors. In spring, flowers flood the fields. Soak up the sun, scenery and cool temperatures in summer. Autumn brings blazing brilliant aspens. Then winter sneaks up with the first brilliant white dusting and we all get ready to slide down the mountains.

ish for feisty trout, patiently stalk that red-tailed hawk eyeing its dinner right along the road. Keep one foot on the brakes: that huge herd of elk around the next bend will stop you in your tracks (Moreno Valley elk herds number in the hundreds). Spot a playful coyote or a hawk on the wing. Vow to become one in your next life. Wilderness is within an hour in several directions: The Wheeler Peak, Latir Peaks and newly designated Columbine Hondo wilderness areas are within an hour. Cimarron Canyon is rich with wildlife. Wait, was that a bear? Your soul needs breathing room. You’ve just found it.

inter means crisp sunny days on a smooth white playground, with more than 210 inches of annual snowfall. Vie for first tracks on 79 ski and snowboarding trails including more then 30 acres of gladed tree terrain. Slide through the forest on cross country skis, trek on snowshoes. Shred one of three award-winning freestyle terrain parks. Dash through the snow in a horse-drawn sleigh or rev up a snowmobile. Find solitude (or solidarity) ice fishing on Eagle Next Lake. Go crazy on the Polar Coaster (the largest tubing park in southern Rockies). Sip chocolate by a cozy fire after the red/orange glow dies down on the peaks (the phenom whereby Angel Fire got its name). Or get in a few last runs night skiing under the stars. Then sleep like the dead.

e take our summer fun seriously. Sun-drenched days slide into cool summer nights, interrupted by the big drama of afternoon thunderstorms. Tennis and golf balls are supercharged up here. You might feel supercharged too: Go zinging through the trees on a zipline or throw down the gauntlet on our world-class downhill mountain biking terrain. Hike into the back country on a cool, refreshing morning. Go four wheeling. Indulge your wildest nature, and horseback ride or wander through fields of lupine or lavender blue columbines. Or just kick back and sip a Margarita on the deck at sunset.

Vietnam Memorial
A
fter learning of their son David’s death in Vietnam, the Dr. Victor Westphall family founded the Vietnam Veterans Peace and Brotherhood Chapel on a hill looking south to Angel Fire. It became the nation’s first Vietnam Memorial. Today, a state park with free admission, it has a national reputation as an invaluable site for veterans of all wars and their families. While the chapel, always open to the public, nurtures the emotional and spiritual setting of the place, the Visitor Center feeds the imagination of those who served in Vietnam. Photographs, banners, video and soldier artifacts fill the 6000 square foot center. Outside is a Huey helicopter. Guided tours available. Visitor Center open 9-5 daily. Limited winter hours. vietnamveteransmemorial.org, 575-377-6900
VETERANS WELLNESS & HEALING CENTER Targeting the need to treat veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress, local leaders founded the National Veterans Wellness and Healing Center, helping veterans face their fears. ngel Fire is an ideal place to live and raise a family. It’s not just beautiful here, we have crystal clear air year around. After work – and we’re a business friendly community – you can get out and enjoy the climate and clear your mind. We have four distinct, spectacular seasons, and it’s nearly always sunny; we’re at the same latitude as Greece. In Angel Fire, the only traffic jam happens when everyone stops for a herd of elk crossing the road.
LIFESTYLE In Angel Fire, we have plenty of peace and quiet. Forget honking horns, sirens, and the fast-paced city life. Instead, sit outside and count the stars or listen to the elk bugle. Angel Fire is home to artists, writers and internet professionals. When you have scenery like ours, it doesn’t take much to become inspired. We’re informal and personal, with a strong sense of community. STAYING GREEN Reduce, reuse, recycle. Angel Fire is doing its part as guardian of the planet with an active recycling program: cardboard, aluminum, plastic, scrap metal, batteries, paper, glass and magazines. Recycling trailers are located around town. 575-377-6967

EDUCATION You don’t have to live in a large city to give your children a topnotch education. Our elementary and middle school is acknowledged as one of New Mexico’s most innovative, and Moreno Valley High School is one of the nation’s top-ranked charter high schools. Construction on a $4 million new high school began in 2015, adding over 12,000 square feet and 11 classrooms. Students love the four day week. HEALTH CARE Our Moreno Valley Health Care Clinic is staffed by a team of medical professionals. It is equipped with X-ray and other typical clinic services. Our local fire department has ambulances and a highly trained EMT staff. Just a half-hour away, Holy Cross Hospital in Taos is a 47-bed acute care facility. We have a dentist and veterinarian, too.

MELTING POT In the American way, Angel Fire is a melting pot. Some of our families have been here for generations, but many residents have deliberately moved here from other parts of the country, even other nations, because it’s such a great place to live. They’ve brought their business acumen, their artistic skills, and a wealth of knowledge, experience and creativity. SHUTER LIBRARY Our local library, rated one of the highest performing libraries of its size in the nation, serves over 20,000 visitors each year. With a collection of over 10,000 books and wifi services, it is an integral part of the community conducting children and youth programs and numerous fund-raising efforts, administered by a director and an active group of volunteers.

AIRPORT IMPROVEMENTS Located on the north end of town, the Colfax County Airport at Angel Fire is more casually referred to as the Angel Fire Airport by locals. It has a single runway of 8900 feet and can accommodate smaller single and twin engine airplanes, as well as corporate jets such as a Gulfstream G550. The runways are at an altitude of 8,382 feet, making it the fourth highest airport in the country. Aviation instructors use the airport to train their students for high altitude conditions. They may perform several “touch and go landings,” where the airplane lands only briefly and then takes off again. Military aircraft, including Hueys and fully-armed Apache helicopters, are also frequently seen. Airplanes can be refueled either at the stationary tanks, fuel farms, or fuel trucks can be dispatched directly to visiting aircraft. Following the recent approval of a draft lease agreement of two acres, space is now available for the construction of more private airplane hangers. Additionally the airport is working on improving pilot amenities, such as food options and a courtesy car.
