Number Nerds Add Up to One Hundred

Juan Puga Reporter LQHS’ Theater and B.E.S.T Productions held its annual spring musical, Number Nerds: The Almost AllGirl Math Challenge, on April 27-29 and May 3-5 with two different main casts. The Broadway-inspired comedy follows the “Number Nerds,” a math team at Waukesha Charter High School who try to redeem themselves after a regional competition prevented them from competing at state. Passionate Poet Produces Perfect Poem

Emily Martinez Reporter The 18th annual LQHS Poet Laureate Contest has come and gone and freshman Drew Patterson has been crowned this year’s Poet Laureate. A luncheon was held on Thursday, April 27 for the finalists and their invited guest. A local writer also addressed the students with an encouraging talk about continuing to write in the future because it is a great way to connect with others. They were encouraged to read poems and enjoy pizza with their friends and fellow poets. Finally, Patterson was announced as this year’s Poet Laureate. “[I w r i t e ] whenever I find something to write about. I find myself just writing out poetry or just any thoughts I have on paper because that’s what I’m best at,” he

commented. “I didn’t think I was going to win at all; it felt amazing when I did.” He smiled as he stated, “I want to be an engineer. I will definitely keep writing, but I would mostly do that on the sides.” Here’s his winning poem inspired by his passion for writing: To some writing is special, Maybe as a hobby or a crutch, Something therapeutic, Or something that’s a must. Maybe it is a weapon, Or magic of some kind, Or possibly just as a way, To empty out your mind.

The meaning may differ, From person to individual, Being anything from a wonder, To something they find dull.

But what is most important, When all is said and done, Is that you’ve made something you’re proud of, And that you have had fun.

2 School News NHow to Cope as You Mope for Exams Jessica Porrelli Copy Editor Viviana Dominguez Reporter Blackhawks, we understand how hard it is to study for IB and AP exams when there is so much material to cover. Therefore, we’ve compiled a list of the best methods for studying and for remedying your test anxiety. Study Methods: 1. Talk to your teachers and ask them to review certain concepts you are struggling with. Be sure to go through your notes and review problems step-by-step. 2. Form a study group, but make sure you’re with students who won’t distract you. 3. Check your syllabus to know what you need to learn and then teach the material and you’ll discover any gaps of what you still need to learn.

4. Make flashcards with events, causes, effects and their significance. Include important people who were involved with the events. Relaxing Tips: 1. Take several breaths to calm yourself down by inhaling for a count of seven seconds, holding it for five, and exhaling for eight. Repeat as necessary. 2. Think positive. Remember that doing well on a test does not mean being better than others. 3. Take a five to ten minute break for every 50 minutes of studying. 4. Stick to healthy habits like getting enough sleep and

eating fruits and vegetables; exercising can help clear your mind. Now you’re ready to take on whatever t e s t m a y c o m e your way this season.

Newsy news 3 Michael Lewis Delights Crowd at Youth Town Hall News Bytes

Genaya Hollis Ad/ Copy Editor On March 27, author and financial journalist, Michael Lewis made an appearance at Youth Town Hall in Indian Wells. Students from around the Valley were invited to contribute to the conversation regarding Lewis’ books while enjoying a delicious dinner. The night opened with premier speaker, Todd Goldberg, who was “profoundly dyslexic” and was told that he would never be able to read or write over a fourth grade level. He proved that statement false as he is now a well-known author and journalist. Most of his novels are based around violence due to his interest in the psychology and why the human mind thinks of such negative actions. He stated that “most [authors] write to try to put out to the world questions we all have answers to.”

Youth Town Hall ambassador, Emily Polakov (11) from Palm Desert High School introduced author, Michael Lewis. Lewis opened up to the audience by speaking about his childhood. Lewis, born in New Orleans, Louisiana, showed no interest in being a writer as he didn’t know what he wanted to do with his future. He was told in college to “not make a living at writing” by one of his professors, but soon began writing when he was accidentally offered a job on Wall Street by a stock marketer’s wife. He became passionate about the

topic of the stock market and Wall Street and eventually decided to put what he learned from his job into books. Lewis transferred to another room with an interviewer and further discussed The Blind Side. It was a situation that he just bumped into as he was friends with the family who took in Michael Oher and stated it showed “the power and nature of giving.” Ironically, The Blind Side was not one of his bestselling books before it became a movie because “people who go see football don’t read books.” Lewis concluded the interview with talking about his experience when he spent a day with former President Barack Obama. He was interested in the president’s job and learned that people who hold such a level in society have to adapt to the environment and maintain a high energy level to make decisions.

Four Countries on the Brink of Famine and What You Can Do

Omar Hassan tCopy Editor As of April, over half a million Somalis have been subsequently displaced from their a homes due to a drought caused g by poor rainfall. Over half of Somalia’s population, six million of 12 million people, face e food shortage and are in critir cal need of humanitarian aid. I Yemen, South Sudan, and s Northern Nigeria are all also o on the edge of famine. Because a of this, 20 million lives in total e are on the brink of life-anddeath malnutrition, dehydras tion, and disease. Yemen is - considered to be in the worst e condition out of all four couna tries as two-thirds of its total population are just hairs shy the threshold of famine and almost half a million children

are acutely malnourished. “Already at the beginning of the year, we are facing the largest humanitarian crisis since the creation of the United Nations [in 1945],” said Stephen O’Brien, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and

Emergency Relief Coordinator. The UN estimated five billion dollars were needed by the end of July to adequately provide for suffering families—only 1/10th of their goal has been met. “I think they’re not receiving adequate funding because not a lot of people know about this,” said Angelica Arroyo (12). “We’re bombarded with trivial news, like celebrity gossip, [which] usually clouds news sites, preventing us from ever really hearing about the issues in other countries.” Donations are now more important than ever as President Donald Trump has been urging Congress to cut foreign aid and put a hold on assisting the UN on humanitarian affairs.

On April 22, scientists in over 600 cities, including Washington D. C., marched to publicize the absence of evidence-based policy in addressing global problems, like climate change. Bill Nye was a key advocate of the march.

Arkansas announced in April that it would execute seven death row inmates in 11 days. These rushed executions are due to the fact that the current supply of midazolam would expire at the end of April and the new drug to replace it would not be FDA-approved. According to witnesses of these executions, the most recent inmate convulsed after the first injection was administered. The governor has rejected calls for an investigation. Bill O’Reilly left Fox News following allegations of sexual harassment. In total, he paid $13 million to five women to settle accusations that have arisen since 2002. The recent internal investigation at Fox News resulted from sexual harassment allegations against Roger Ailes, the former chairman who resigned last July. Emmanuel Macron (En Marche!) became France’s new president after the runoff election against Marine Le Pen (National Front) on May 7. He won 66.1 percent of the vote, while Le Pen received 33.9

p e r c e n t . Macron’s policies would involve France more in the European Union and attempt to make the nation more competitive on the global stage. During an investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties with Russia, it was revealed that despite a warning in 2014 about not giving paid speeches to foreign governments, Michael Flynn, former national security advisor, was paid over $30,000 by Russian state-run television shows to deliver speeches. In addition, Carter Page, former Trump campaign advisor, said he had “brief interactions” with a Russian official who was suspected of being a spy. Trump fired F.B.I. director James Comey on Tuesday, May 9 while the bureau was investigating the Trump campaign and its ties to Russia. This decision appears to be due to the fact that Comey violated certain Justice Department policies by publicly discussing former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server. However, many Democrats hypothesize that the dismissal may be linked to Trump’s frustration over the current investigation into his presidential campaign’s ties with Russia. Trump stated via Twitter, “James Comey will be replaced by someone who will do a far better job, bringing back the spirit and prestige of the FBI.”

Davey’s Guide to Looking A1 at Prom

David Viefhaus Reporter Prom is just around the corner, so now is the time you should be getting your best outfit together. For guys who are struggling to figure out what to wear, here are a few tips. ● Never wear a brown belt with black shoes. The little accents matter, they’re what pull your outfit together. ● Don’t wear a blue-collared shirt; those make you look like you just got out of work. ● Get a nice black or white shirt depending on what color your tux is. ● As far as pants go, you need to get a nice pair of trousers and get them tailored to your body. Ask your tailor to take off

any extra slack on the bottom of your pants and get them tapered if needed. A pair of well tailored pants makes the outfit more slick and fitted, which is perfect for prom night. ● If you’re planning on getting your pants tailored, bring in your jacket as well. Nothing looks better than a perfect fitting outfit. If you’re unsure where to get your clothes tailored, you can go to Ralph’s Sewing or Sak’s Fifth Avenue, both in Palm Desert. Ladies, some of the most common mistakes when putting together a prom outfit are overloading on sparkles, being a little too matchy, not matching enough, and/or having a

dress that doesn’t fit properly. ● Sparkles should be a nice subtle detail in your outfit, you don’t want to walk onto the dance floor and have everyone think a disco ball fell from the ceiling. ● Coming across as too matchy can look tacky. An easy way to avoid being too matchy is sticking with one or two colors and using different shades of them within your outfit. ● It’s just as easy to not match enough as being too matchy, again stick with different shades of the color you want to wear for the night.

promposals 5

Frank Sanders (11) asked both Victoria Beltran (12) and Emily Ojeda (12) to prom in the most noticeable way. Sanders had friends line up throughout the hallway holding faux roses to lead the girls to a giant sign that read, “You COLOR my life, so let’s SABER this moment,” as both girls are in color guard. With a bouquet of roses in hand, Sanders then popped the question and, of course, they said yes! Beltran shared, “When we got to Frank, I just cried because I’ve never been asked to prom before and since it was my last year, it had even more significance to me.”

Izzy Clarke (11) was shocked by her boyfriend, Christian Gaxiola’s (12) promposal. Gaxiola used a bunch of rose petals as a path to the main gym that formed the shape of a heart with candles in the middle, spelling out “Prom?” Next to the heart was Gaxiola holding a bouquet of sunflowers and another poster that had a heart-shaped collage of photos of them and balloons on the side. “I felt so blessed by God to have such an amazing boyfriend,” Clarke shared.

Robert Smoot (11) brought a fairy tale to life when he asked Tori Thayer (11) to prom. A tale as old as time, Smoot used the concept of Beauty and the Beast as his promposal. With the help of Thayer’s mom and their friend, Ariana Soto, he set up a surprise for Thayer at her house. She didn’t have a clue that he was going to ask her that day.

Benji Cordova (12) surprised his girlfriend, Ashton Mudry (11), with a grand promposal. Cordova, with the help of Mudry’s friends, hung two huge pink posters off of the second floor of the new building, asking, “Ashton, prom?” Mudry, who had been in the MHA building, came out and said, “Aw, wait, that’s me!” She didn’t realize it was for her at first, but thought it was super cute. After, Cordova gave her balloons and flowers as they embraced.

Antonio Gambino (12) planned his promposal for Anessa Trulock (12) six months ago and used his artistic skills to creatively ask her with painted canvases of special moments they had shared. Gambino sent Trulock on a scavenger hunt with riddles in envelopes that led her to each piece. At the end of the hunt, she removed her blindfold to see all the canvases together and sunflowers spelling out “PROM?” “The look on her face made it all worth it,” said Gambino.

Hannah Durkee (11) was asked by Aidan Miller (10) during an FCA meeting. She went to the main gym to see all of her closest friends, as well as Miller’s brother and mom, lined up with balloons while holding roses. At the end of the row, Miller held more roses and a big poster asking Durkee to prom. She said, “I had a feeling I was getting asked that day, but I had no idea how! I am so thankful for him and my friends who helped.”

6 sports Boys’ and Girls’ Swim Have Strong Seasons

Bailey Franklin Copy Editor Madison O’Barr Reporter Girls: The Lady Blackhawks have fought fiercely this 2017 swim season to build up their young competitors. As evidence, the girls walked away from this season with only one DVL defeat against Xavier Prep on March 30. A highlight this season was when Akemi Von Scherr (9) beat four school records that had been set by Coach Henderson when she was a high school student at LQHS. Despite their loss to Xavier, they took victory against Cathedral City, Indio, and Palm Springs in the following weeks. Prior to finals, CoCaptain Hannah Durkee gave a well-deserved compliment to the team’s dedication, saying, “La Quinta had some really strong swims at prelims. We have been working hard all season and the results are showing. We are so stoked to get some PRs at finals!” The team finished DVL Finals on Tuesday, May 2. During the race, the 200 freestyle relay placed first and the 400m freestyle relay placed third. Jordan Nadler (11) broke her own personal records in the 50m and 100m freestyle races, while Lauren Olivier (10) also improved this season in the 500m and 200m freestyle. Von Scherr also kept the PR streak during the 500m freestyle and 100m breaststroke. Boys: The La Quinta boys’ swim

team did well this season, but lost their chance to win DVL because of their loss at the Shadow Hills meet on March 16. Varsity swimmer, Jeremy Baker (12) said, “Unfortunately, we lost DVL because of a few regrettable disqualifications; but given that we’re a mostly pro-water polo group [participating in] swim to stay in shape for it, I thought we did pretty well.” JV swimmer Alec Vazquez (10) professed, “This year, swim

On April 18, the LQ boys’ baseball team played at PD’s varsity field against Indio at Indio’s home conference game. The Blackhawks were the dominant team, winning with a score of 7-0. For the two innings afterwards, the LQ boys continued with four more runs, while Indio stayed with their only run that was made in the first inning. Sean Layman Reporter This spring, the team teed off to the second rank in their league. La Quinta has ten wins and five losses, with six of those wins in DVL matches. LQ matched up against Palm Desert at Silver Rock Country Club, where the boys fought hard, but couldn't keep up with Palm Desert's golfer, John Kim (11), who shot a 33. Unfortunately, LQ finished the match with a score of 188 to 180. Looking to bounce back against Indio, the varsity team took the win with Nick Conoway (12) leading the pack, shooting a 40 overall and eventually taking the victory

after nine holes with an overall score of 218 to the Rajah’s score of 289. Shortly after that match, LQ looked to get another win with a match against Palm Springs at Silver Rock, where the boys took the win with a clean score of 192 to 303. Varsity team member, Cameron Winslow (10) said, “Our season could have been a lot better with all the losses to Xavier and Palm Desert.” With four of the six starting players leaving after this season, new-

The Blackhawks had one more run over the Knights and came out with a victory score of 4-3. In a recent game on May 2, the LQ boys played against Palm Springs. Tuesday’s home game consisted of five LQ runs in the first inning, four runs in the second inning, and three runs in the sixth inning to make a dominant victory over the Indians who made only four runs. La Quinta is currently ranked number two in DVL. Alex Leon (12) added, “Last year, we had a really stacked team and a lot of people really overlooked us. This year is all about proving them wrong by making playoffs for sure and placing in DVL. We will test greatness.” On May 9, the seniors celebrated their last season on the LQ varsity baseball team. Before a victory over Xavier Prep (6-0), the seniors thanked their parents for all of the support they have received throughout their high school careers. The senior boys delivered a rose to their mothers as a symbol for appreciation. For the fathers, the seniors threw a baseball with a message of thanks written on it as they were lined up in front of their students. The boys played their last game on Thursday, May 11 against Xavier at 6:30 p.m. Due to printing deadlines, we were unable to update the final score.

As the season comes to a close, the seniors are making valiant attempts to stay strong. Returning senior and the team’s top player, Kai Martin, has won a majority of his games. His skills were shown in his individual match against Cathedral City on April 6, as he won all of his three rounds. The rest of the team built on his success and were victorious with a score of 11-7.

in their recent results. Despite their efforts, they suffered a loss against Xavier Prep on April 4. The boys continue their season with the determination to win and move on to CIF. Martin said, “Although we are a team with new additions, we have shaped up from the beginning of the season. We will all put in our best efforts to play well at DVL and head to CIF.” Boys’ Tennis

With the season coming to an end, varsity coach, Bree Luna, stated, “With two weeks left in the regular season, our team has been doing a great job. As a coach, it is very exciting to see our team be successful. We faced adversity early in the season, but we are very resilient and we were able to learn from our mistakes and grow.” On April 20, the Hawks had their second rivalry game against Palm Desert. The Aztecs scored two runs in the first inning, but LQ bounced back by gaining five runs in the second inning. The final score was 10-4, showing that the team improved greatly since the first time they played them. Coach Luna added, “CIF is right around the corner and it is definitely an exciting season. I have high hopes for our team and we will continue to take the same approach in CIF as we are now in DVL: one game at a time.” Softball

Kenny Chesney Bentley Dierks

Vanessa Barboza Asst. Sports Editor Although Sunday night’s performance marked Kenny Chesney’s fourth time at Stagecoach, he ended the three-day festival with excitement and style. On the third day, crowds are typically lower in energy; but in this case, the audience was pumped with excitement for Chesney’s return. He delivered a similar set to those he performed while on tour last summer, such as “No

Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem” and “Summertime.” Chesney was the only headliner at this year’s festival to not bring out a special guest, but the fans did not mind since he performed his most recent hits from his newest album, Cosmic Hallelujah, including “Noise” and “Setting the World on Fire.” Chesney ended the festival by thanking everyone who came out and sharing how proud he was to be back at Stagecoach.

Cole Swindell

Christian Mesa Sports Editor On Friday, April 28, Cole Swindell took the Mane Stage by storm with his meaningful lyrics and energetic tunes, a perfect opener to Dierks Bentley. Swindell honored those fighting overseas with his hit song, “You Should Be Here,” then trashing former significant others with “Ain’t Worth the Whiskey.”

The old school country boy used his southern voice to bring some classic country into his pop style country music. Swindell’s songs are considered party anthems, a title upheld by his classic song, “Middle of a Memory.” He showed listeners why he is the life of the party with his performance on Friday, giving fans memories that will last forever.

Christian Mesa Sports Editor Dierks Bentley served as the headliner for the beginning of Stagecoach weekend, a performance that delivered energy needed to carry country lovers through the festival. During his show, Bentley performed his hits “5-1-5-0,” “Black,” and “Drunk on a Plane,” while playing in tune with the vibe of the crowd. He also brought a fan up onstage for a drinking competition and later for crowd surfing. Having numerous duets with other country stars, Bentley brought on Cole Swindell and Elle King to perform their songs, “Flatliner” and “Different for Girls.” The energy and passion that

Bentley brought as Friday’s headliner was the perfect opener to the rest of Stagecoach, where he would often be

complimented for his performance by Kip Moore, Brett Eldredge, and Tyler Farr throughout the festival.

Shania Twain

Vanessa Barboza Asst. Sports Editor Shania Twain ended day two of Stagecoach Country Music Festival in the most perfect way. Headlining the threeday event at the Empire Polo Grounds, Twain sang the hits that made her a country music icon during the 1990s and early 2000s. While singing her classic hit “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” she demonstrated her studio-like singing quality and her vocal control. Nick Jonas made a cameo to perform a duet version of “Party for Two.” Twain and Jonas had great chemistry and before his appearance, she told the crowd how “handsome and talented” he was. “This is the party of the year for me,” she said in a laughable voice as the crowd

fed her with applause. She ended the show with a reassuring rendition of “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” Her ‘90s hit

was a great closing performance as it made the crowd sing and dance as they left the grounds.

DJ Snake

Viviana Dominguez Reporter At the Outdoor Stage, DJ Snake opened his performance with bright, flashing lights. People were seen running from the Sahara Tent towards the stage to get a good spot upfront near the DJ. From a distance, the lights display - flashing colors of red, white, and blue were visible and lit up the sky.

The speaker’s sounds were electrifying and in sync with the lights display as the beat steadily rose in pitch to pump up the crowd until DJ Snake let the beat drop. Everybody threw their hands in the air, while others tossed glow sticks for people to catch. DJ Snake played a remix of “Turn Down For What,” which gave the area a feeling of ecstasy.

DJ Khaled

Genaya Hollis Ad/Copy Editor DJ Khaled opened his set up in the Sahara Tent on Sunday with a heart-warming video of him and his son, Asahd. Once the video came to an end, the crowd began chanting “DJ Khaled” until Khaled finally came on stage. He played hits such as “Work (REMIX)” by ASAP Ferg, “I’m On One,” featuring Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne, and “I Got the Keys” featuring JAY Z and Future. During the set, DJ Khaled preached about loving and caring for his fans. He explained to the audience that he would not be where he is without their support. He brought out guest performance Kent Jones, who sang his popular song, “Don’t Mind.”

Future Photo Courtesy; Goldenvoice

David Viefhaus Reporter Future’s handful of guest performers included Ty Dolla $ign, Migos, and former headliner Drake, respectively. The Atlanta rapper came to the festival to put on a show and that’s exactly what he did. Future started his set with his song, “Rent Money,” to get the crowd going. It was in a matter of seconds that the first 100 feet of people turned into a mosh pit. The crowd seemed to have calmed down for a bit once he finished with his first song, but once the 33-year-old rapper brought out Ty Dolla $ign to perform their song “Blasé,” the mosh pits doubled in size. About halfway through his set, fellow Atlanta rappers,

Migos, came out on stage to perform “T-Shirt” and “Bad and Boujee” off their new album, Culture. Finally to end

the set, Drake came out to play “Jumpman,” “Gyalchester,” and “Fake Love.

The crowd got hyped up as DJ Khaled played old bops such as

To end her night with a bang, the crowd wished her happy birthday and made the tough R&B singer crack a smile.

Karis Johnson Reporter Kehlani performed at Coachella on Sunday, April 23, which happened to be just hours before her twenty-second birthday. This created a ton of hype within the stage performance and her overflowing audience. Genaya Hollis Ad/Copy Editor Lorde opened up with a beautiful performance Sunday night at the Coachella Stage. There was a large setup of a elevating glass cube where dancers performed multiple scenes from a party. Lorde started her performance by singing an acoustic version of her new song, “Green Light.” It was a tranquil night as the crowd swayed with the wind to Lorde’s angelic voice. The audience sang along to popular songs such as “Team” and “Royals.” She also sang songs from her new upcoming album, Melodrama. Near the end of the set, Lorde was in the glass cube with the interpretive dancers. The cube tilted

Mac DeMarco

Mariana Escatell Asst./Photo Editor On Friday, April 21, Mac DeMarco took the Outdoor Stage to slow down the hot Friday afternoon to chill the audience down. He came out at 5:30 p.m. and began by introducing himself and his band members, and soon began to play “Salad Days,” a fan favorite. By starting with a well-known song, the crowd was hyped and ready to take on the rest of the set. Next, DeMarco played some songs from his new album, such as “This Old

Dog.” Avid fans of DeMarco felt honored to be able to listen to new songs before they were released to the public. Finally, to close the set, the loving man brought his girlfriend, Kiki, to sing “Still Together” to her. After making everyone's heart melt or feel sad that their significant other wasn’t in attendance, or that they didn’t have a significant other, he closed the set. He wished his fans goodbye with the obligatory “COOOOOOACHELLA, THANK YOU!!” and took his girlfriend offstage with him.

Surf Curse

Mariana Escatell Asst./Photo Editor Surf Curse added an even cooler vibe to the Sonoma Tent, a new addition to the Coachella Stage setup. They came out singing “Christine F” and began to talk the crowd and interact with them. They asked questions and seemed to really get on a personal level with the crowd. While the crowd began a mosh pit... yes, a mosh pit to Surf Curse, if you can believe it! Surf Curse continued to bring a good time to the crowd. They sang songs both off “Nothing Yet” and “Sad Boys.” They then sang a rendition of a Blink 182 song and the crowd

went wild. They closed off their set by singing “Ponyboy,” and thanking the crowd for coming to see them.

Coachella Dillon Francis Radiohead

Kayleen Sullivan Co-Editor-in-Chief Dillon Francis was the most anticipated DJ of Friday night, closing out the opening weekend. His set immediately grabbed the audience’s attention with an introduction by everyone’s favorite scientist, Bill Nye the Science Guy. After reminding everyone to recycle their plastic water bottles, Francis transitioned slowly into his first song. A large white sheet covered the stage and was dropped after the first beat to reveal Francis and his elaborate stage. Just like every performance in the Sahara Tent, Fran-

Travis Scott

David Viefhaus Reporter As the crowd anxiously waited for 45 minutes in between sets, Travis Scott finally got on stage, as he arose from the middle of the crowd on the catwalk. He hyped the crowd up in an instant as soon as everyone realized where he was. He started off the set with his song “Skyfall” to get everyone ready for what was to come. After, he smoothly transitioned into “Mamacita,” which got the whole crowd

looking like everyone was on a trampoline. The mosh pits started at his second song and didn’t end until Scott left the stage. The 24-year-old rapper was one of the most anticipated acts of the weekend and he was not going to disappoint. For his last song of the night, Scott went all out by performing his hit song, “Goosebumps,” on top of a giant puppeteered bird to go along with the theme of his newest album, Birds in the Trap.

with new and old friends, while jumping and fistpumping in unison. Francis performed his hits “Get Low” and “Set Me Free,” bringing energy to the crowd, lighting up the Sahara Tent, and leaving ‘Chella goers satisfied at the end of the night and full of anticipation for the next two days.

Daniel Leon Guest Reporter A few thoughts occurred to me as I watched Radiohead perform during the second weekend of Coachella. One, this is the greatest alternative rock band on the planet playing in my backyard. Two, is this their final Coachella performance? And if so, what kind of set list will they give us? In total, Radiohead has headlined Coachella three times (2004, 2012, 2017). Each year, they have given fans something special to remember them and their music. One moment that comes to mind is the second weekend of Coachella 2012, when they played “Kid A,” a song they rarely perform. Radiohead's

Their sound was grunge and retro, yet had a loving and romantic vibe. The lead singer, Ison Van Winkle, shook up the stage with his dance moves and angelic voice. 2017 performance was no different, playing hits and fan favorites from the nine albums they have produced over the past 24 years. Finally seeing and hearing them play "Fake Plastic Trees" live was my favorite moment, as it has been a song I have always wanted to personally experience live. Having attended seven Radiohead shows through the years, I never know what I’m going to get when I go to a Radiohead show. It's like a box of chocolates. (Shout out to the readers who got my Forrest Gump reference.) Radiohead is the only band that never plays the same set list, creating unique experiences for each show. The second weekend of Coachella was the final show of their extensive U.S. tour and we don't know when they will be back. I predict they have one more album left to gift to the world before they call it quits. If history is any indication, however, the next tour will probably take place in 2022. A Radiohead show is always worth the wait; so, start camping out for tickets now, I'll save you a spot. Photo Courtesy; Goldenvoice

Festival News What’s Up With?!?!?!

Till Next Year, Coachella!!

David Viefhaus Reporter Festival season is over for the Coachella Valley this year and it’s probably a good thing we all take a break considering all of our classrooms are filled with the Coachella flu. Coachella 2017 was arguably two of the best weekends of the year; they were filled with various music types, bright and colorful art, good-looking people, and a collection of different food stands that made you really debate about how hungry you actually are due to their prices. People go to Coachella for the music and this year definitely did not disappoint. Some of the highlights of the festival include Migos being brought out on three different sets to perform “Bad and Boujee” during the first weekend. Kendrick Lamar did a DAMN. good job rocking the mainstage with different clips of Fox News hosts criticizing the lyrics to his protest song, “Alright,” which was accompanied with fireworks. Like prior years, the art was full of bright and happy colors. By the Outdoor Stage, the “Is This What Brings Things Into Focus” installation featured four six stories high boxyunicorn like animals with different colorful patterns on each one. For the time, first had Coachella their Antarctic Tent, which was a giant dome where a 360 degrees video was played on the ceiling. As described by the Los An?

geles Times, “The film whips you around the cosmos, into DNA strands and through a cubist fantasia of light, color and heavy bass drones.” As the days formed into nights, sitting down and eating the food Coachella had to offer was a popular way to wind down. The food at Coachella really represents the festival in itself, having different types of food from all over. There were over 100 food vendors, but if you didn’t get a chance to try Spicy Pie or Afters Ice Cream, you can’t say you had the full Coachella experience.

Stagecoach 2017 made the country world proud

Vanessa Barboza Asst. Sports Editor Country music lovers grabbed their cowboy hats and headed to the desert for a country wonderland at the 2017 Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio. Over 200,000 people attended on April 2830 to enjoy a weekend of great music, food, and line-dancing. Launched by Goldenvoice in 2007, Stagecoach has grown from being a smaller, country version of Coachella to being the fifth highest-grossing music festival of all time. Pop singer, Elle King, joined Friday’s headliner Dierks Bentley for a live performance of their recent hit, “Different For Girls,” before Jon Pardi also joined Bentley to end the first day of Stagecoach.
