Second Life Master’s Design Thesis Studio 2 Open: Social, 2024 Individual Work Project Type Location
Healthcare Footscray, VIC, Australia
Tutor (s) Rory Hyde rory.hyde@unimelb.edu.au In the midst of alcohol and drug addiction issues in Footscray, this project proposes an Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Dependance Rehabilitation Centre. The proposition aims for a communitybased healthcare facility to support treatment. Architecture not only provide spaces for rehabilitation but also as a tool for social change, as this project’s purpose is to destigmatize AOD addiction patients with the help of a social buffer layer. The design adopts adaptive-reuse architecture, as how this approach gives second life to old buildings, this rehabilitation centre can also give second life to its patients. keywords: AOD addiction, rehabilitation, adaptive-reuse, social buffer, destigmatization, community softwares: AutoCAD, Rhino, SketchUp, V-Ray, Photoshop, InDesign, Affinity Designer

Office Work
Individual Work
01 setting the building’s volume and outdoor spaces composition; configuring vista and access. keeping current existing entrances to site, trees and greeneries, as well as surrounding perimeter walls as “memory of place”.
02 adapting the creek curves from Merri-Merri and Moonee Moonee to the site. a lake-form waters viewed from Sydney Rd acts as a “visual magnet” for people and pedestrians (Sydney Rd have the highest intensity of people passing by than the other streets surrounding the site).
03 configuring the building shape to resemble how indigenous people built shelters made out of Paperbark trees (the barks lean on a tree making a slope curve gesture). the tall facade faces south to reduce direct sunlight while maximizing daylight.

Office (built) Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia
Project Type Location
Market Brunswick, VIC, Australia
Tutor (s) Jacqui Nguyen
To facilitate a daily-used office for administration and paperwork, the design proposed a renovation for the office, especially the facade and the front-half of the building. The design is intended to be simple, modern, and yet tropical to fit into the context which is located in Bali.
Merri Creek, or once called the Merri-Merri was important for aborigins’ daily activities; they hunted animals and collected food sources (fish, eels, possum), they collected Paperbark tree barks for making shelters, and made campfires and sat in circle for social gathering and ceremonies (corroboree).
facade design alternatives
Natural stones and timber cladding plays a role to elevate the front elevation, some vegetation are provided as design accent, and usage of ACP (aluminium composite panel) are mostly used on the long-side to ensure modularity and construction convenient.
Bringing back the past and natural elements and adding Brunswick’s current context, ReImagining Merri Creek is a public urban nature space with market and social spaces for Brunswick people. Acts as a space to breathe, the waters resembles the Merri Creek, the trees and timbers resembles how trees are used for shelters, and modern materials such as concrete, bricks, steel, and aluminium resembles Brunswick’s industrial identity.
