MASSIMILIANO & ALFONSO CACCHIARELLI PRINCIPI

“Robustae mentis est solidam sapientiam sustinere” (It is typical of a solid mind to develop a strong knowledge). Latin motto from the obelisk’s basement in Piazza della Minerva, Rome. For more than 10 years the Italian artist Massimiliano Cacchiarelli Principi has been working alongside his father Alfonso. After studying Natural Sciences at the University of Camerino, Massimiliano attended the Academy of Belle Arti di Macerata and then started collaborating with his father in their studio. Their work shows a devotion to religion, while their Art becomes the direct manifestation of the true absolute, which is beyond our ability of understanding. In fact Massimiliano highlights that only one code, made of normal signs and words, is not enough to communicate a pure message. It is necessary to use another language which works by both revealing and hiding certain meanings to the viewer. To develop an intimacy with the artworks, the audience needs to exceed appearances and decipher the enigmatic symbols that extend the reality of the phenomenon. For this reason, Massimiliano can be considered a proper contemporary alchemist. His research focuses on finding the quintessence of things by which simple objects can be dignified. As described in the myth of Dionysus, the man has a double nature: on one hand there is his prevalent one which is bestial and rude. On the other hand, there is a sparkle of the divine Dionysiac ashes. Through Massimiliano’s alchemic process, Art is able to talk to the second side of human nature and, consequently, frees the viewers from mental and material constraints.
