Sveta Yavorsky is a Russian-born figurative artist in the contemporary British trend that rejects academic figurative representation in favour of a semi-abstract method of composition with what Malevich called the "additional element" of painting. Sveta begins constructing her compositions by scattering seemingly randomly scaled particles of local colour with well defined contours, forming purely abstract clusters of elements. These bursts of colour collected into patterned layers are added together until their superposition is balanced on entirely abstract terms. Then, however, the human tendency to seek patterns in random data - to find figurative fulfilment - comes to the fore; a face or a hand that seems to be almost there is emphasised by the artist in subtle but decisive ways. Nevertheless, these are still only abstract patterns of colour that resemble a spectral figure and the painting reaches closure before the figurative becomes literal, so that it remains vibrant in a special way that is only possible in abstract composition.
