What’s On June July 2013

Spring into the new season at firstsite! This season we have two concurrent exhibitions at firstsite: Richard Hughes: Time is over, time has come and Humphrey Spender: London Photographs. The exhibitions both highlight the beauty of the less-seen, the worn and the everyday. You can take a tour of the exhibitions with Senior Curator Michelle Cotton and enjoy talks from the artist and others to put these two fascinating exhibitions in context. Our popular lecture series Colchester’s Avatars programmed in collaboration with the University of Essex continues, and a new

series begins in May on the theme of witches through the ages. Our thriving film programme features some real treats this season, including a special screening of Digging for Victory, introduced by the Suffolk-born directors, our first family film festival and an opportunity for budding filmmakers to get their film on our big screen. There are debates, events, talks and opportunities for artists, great classes for adults including sculpture casting, an event connecting movement and drawing, and new performances

throughout the building. We also have the Easter holidays covered with drop-in and bookable events for children, as well as our regular courses, and Dinky Disco and Club Dinky. Our young people’s group Y.A.K. (Young Art Kommunity) has activities from poi skills to cinema, game sessions to dance showcases. Look out for us out and about in the community too read on to find out more about projects in Greenstead, Old Heath and at the Garrison. We look forward to welcoming you to firstsite soon. We’d love you to get in touch and let us know what you think: www.firstsite.uk.net facebook.com/ firstsite twitter.com/firstsite

Richard hughestime is over, time has come 16 March– 12 May 2013 firstsite’s spring season begins with a new solo exhibition by the British artist Richard Hughes.

Hughes’ sculpture and installations draw on the cast-off and dilapidated objects of the urban wasteland. Using a labour-

intensive process of mould-making and casting, he produces meticulously crafted replicas of objects that are injected with an element of fantasy. His

trompe l’oeil sculpture often produces a misleading impression of reality, bringing a sense of wonder and enchantment to the everyday. Produced in

and The Showroom, London (2004). His work has been exhibited internationally, including presentations at the François Pinault Collection, Punta della Dogana, Venice; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh and the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt. Hughes was selected for the fourth

Liverpool Biennial in 2006 and the British Art Show 6 in 2005. He was nominated for the Beck’s Futures award in 2006 and was the recipient of the EAST International award in 2003.
