GREEN-FINGERED volunteers got their hands dirty at the launch of a new community garden in Catford.

The Big Dig event saw residents old and young roll up their sleeves to add the finishing touches to the Mountsfield Park Community Garden in Stainton Road. More than 100 eager volunteers, including several local councillors and Labour MP for Lewisham East Heidi Alexander, worked from 10am until dusk, painting, planting trees and flowers and eating pizza. Last month’s event was organised by the Friends of Mountsfield Park group and executive member Maria Conyard said: “We really 44742QV04 didn’t expect such an amazing turnout and we were just blown away by the hard graft everyone put in. The sense of pride and fun that people brought with them made the day so enjoyable.” Ms Alexander said: “I spent an hour digging a trench and felt that I had earned my piece of home-made pizza by the end of it! “With so many flats having no access to gardens, I think this community space offers a great opportunity for local people to spend time ALL SMILES: Yixing Luo and Caroline Annand outdoors, whilst getting to know nature and planting at the Big Day event BUY THIS PICTURE: SOUTHLONDONPRESS.NEWSPRINTS.CO.UK 44742QV01 their neighbours.”
