ow that Christmas has come and gone, it’s time to work off those extra calories. No need for the strenuous trips to the gym, all the workout you need can be found in the garden. January and February can be a cold and dismal, with shorter days, frozen soil and of course the dreaded rain and snow. Long gone are the picturesque vibrant colours of the summer borders, instead the stark emptiness of the sodden earth.

As long as you don’t mind working in the cold and you’re dressed appropriately it can be rewarding tidying up and tending to a few simple jobs in preparation for the spring. Perfect manicured lawns play an important and integral part in the makeup of most gardens, often becoming a central point of view, a contrast of lush green against the colourful summer borders, but at this time of year there isn’t much to do. Like most plants the growing has slowed down, awaiting the warm temperatures of the spring. But never the less, sweeping leaves and debris from the surface will keep the lawn healthy as well as looking good. New edges can be cut and repaired as long as the ground isn’t frozen, use a sharp edging tool to get the perfect shape. Fruit such as apples and pear trees should be pruned in winter ideally January; this insures a good quality fruit crop the following year. Using a good quality sharp pair of secateurs or saw, thin out from the middle cutting out any branch that is crossing over and rubbing on other branches and try to create a teardrop shape, leaving around five main branches. Other fruit trees such as plums cherries etc. should be left and pruned late June or mid-August. Vacant borders or plots can be dug over as long as the ground isn’t frozen, exposing pest and grubs hibernating beneath the soil which will be eaten by the birds.

Be careful where you dig, remember you could have spring bulbs such as tulips and daffodils beneath the surface. Ideally you should keep a paper plan or record of your garden planting, updating regularly when you plant other bulbs corms perennials and any other plants that die off in the winter but return in the spring or summer.
The snow always looks amazing in the garden. A pure white blanket falls silently down, inviting and waiting for the hat scarf gloves and wellies, but before you build the perfect snowman and start the snowball fight with the children, remember to gently shake the snow off the shrubs and bushes as the weight can pull the branches down and snap them.
Using pots placed strategically around the garden can be an effective way of brightening up any dull space. Fill pots with plants such as young conifers, snowdrops and colourful winter pansies. Check all plants and shrubs that you’ve staked making sure they are still secure in preparation for the high winds of the winter.
As well as the high winds rain and snow, we also have to deal with the big freeze. Tender plants and shrubs such as Palms Bamboo and Banana plants have to be protected, the obvious answer if in pots are to bring them in to a warmer climate, greenhouse or conservatory.

If in the ground, it’s a different story. You can use bamboo canes around the plant as a support for a large clear plastic bag or gardeners fleece to completely cover and protect the plant from the frost. Palms are slightly different, before covering the plant, pull all the leaves up from the bottom and tie loosely with garden twine to protect the new tender shoots in the middle. Any other small tender plants can be protected by mulching with straw. Remember it’s not only the plants that are at risk you may have plants in pots which are not frost proof, causing them to crack. Keep an eye on your ponds when the temperature drops below freezing.
It’s a good idea to turn off all water pumps that have flimsy plastic pipes. If the water freezes inside the pipes it will expand and may cause the pipe to split. Another good idea is to put a plastic football in the pond; this will stop the pond from completely freezing over and allowing harmful gases to escape. Lastly if you’re lucky enough to be visited by the much loved British wildlife that inhabits our gardens, spare a thought for them. Making sure there’s food for them to eat, this is vital to their survival. You can check on the RSPCA website for further information on what to feed.

Black Retro Dreyfuss Series 302 Push Button Desk Phone The iconic type 302 phone was designed by the prolific industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss and introduced in 1937. He used ear to mouth measurements from 2000 people to create the egonomic handset. The first to incorporate the bell in the base of the unit, the phone was originally cast in metal. Same year, Stanley Kubrick pictured the future of the year 2001, featuring the Verner Panton Chair, and man was soon to set foot on the moon.
