NEW HELP FOR EATING DISORDERS IN EASTbOuRNE A new counselling service specialising in eating disorders has opened its doors. The Sussex Eating Disorders Clinic has been founded by Greg Szanto to help the increasing number of people who are suffering from eating disorders.

I

t is estimated that 1.6 million people in the UK suffer from an eating disorder such as anorexia, bulimia

and binge eating. Many more are affected by an eating problem of some kind, including obesity, food craving and failed dieting. As a counsellor specializing in eating disorders, Greg is concerned at the lack of effective help for people with these problems. ‘Although the problems are recognised,’ says Greg, ‘they are not understood. Many people are locked into cycles of binge, purge and starvation with anorexia and bulimia while others spend much of their lives in misery trying to lose weight.’ Greg believes that in order to help people with eating disorders it is necessary to treat both

Wellbeingnews the physical aspects of the problems and also the emotional issues which caused the disorders. He believes that the most effective way of doing this is through specialist counselling. Greg has practised as a professional counsellor for many years and decided to specialise in eating disorders when he took his Diploma in Eating Disorders with the National Centre for Eating Disorders. As well as providing counselling for clients he trains other professionals and runs regular workshops for members of the medical and helping professions. ‘These are issues which have needed addressing for a long time,’ says Greg who believes that this service is long overdue. ‘We are delighted that the Sussex Eating Disorders Clinic will be able to provide the crucial care and support for people who need this help.’ The Sussex Eating Disorders Clinic is based at 69 Meads Road, Eastbourne BN20 7QL | info@ sussexeatingdisorders clinic.co.uk | 01323 644372 | 07790 239205 | www. sussexeatingdisorders clinic.co.uk

FOOD s e c i cho

The BBC2’s “The Men That Made Us Fat” and Channel 4’s” Dispatches - The Myths about your 5 a Day” highlighted exactly what is wrong with the food industry, who has the power and how we as consumers are manipulated by advertising and marketing. This month Kate Arnold discusses this in more detail and also what we can do about it. words: Kate Arnold

S

adly being in a double dip recession doesn’t help our food choices, and many families are going back to cheap processed food, but your health is paramount and good food needs to come as top priority in the budgeting! Unless you take the time to read every ingredient on the label you cannot assume anything!

ADVERTISING FOR KIDS Cereals manufactured for children have allegedly become more nutritious in the last few years, however it is often the least nutritious cereal that runs the most advertising. If we take

8 Wellbeing

the US as an example (the numbers are far greater and more alarming over there) - according to a study by Yale Rudd Centre for Food Policy and Obesity, cereal companies spend $264 million on advertising for children annually - that’s a 34% increase from 2008 and the advertising is for, guess what.. the least nutritious cereal. If we look at the brand leaders over here they are full of sugar or the cheaper sweetener - corn syrup. Its rare to see plain porridge oats marketed but very common to see Cheerios and Coco Pops. When was it ok for kids to go to school on sugar, but is it any wonder that they do particularly with pester power and the convenience of packaged food? Walt Disney have acknowledged at last the powerful role that television can play in influencing children’s behaviour and announced that they have instituted a junk-food advertising ban

on programmes for kids. The Campaign for a CommercialFree Childhood, a US non-profit advocacy group, applauded Disney’s announcement but questioned the three-year delay until the stricter rules take full effect. In my mind, it’s just too little too late, the horse has already bolted. Today’s children consume multiple types of media (often simultaneously) and spend more time (44.5 hours per week) in front of computer, television, and game screens than any other activity in their lives except sleeping. Research has found strong associations between increases in advertising for non-nutritious foods and rates of childhood obesity. Most children under 6 yrs old cannot distinguish between programming and advertising and children under 8 yrs do not understand the persuasive intent of advertising. Advertising directed at children this young

Wellbeing nutrition this but you can do it with a little creative input and discipline! So what about adults?

DO YOU BUY WHAT’S THERE?

is by its very nature exploitative. Children have a remarkable ability to recall content from the ads to which they have been exposed. Product preference has been shown to occur with as little as a single commercial exposure and to strengthen with repeated exposures. Product preferences affect children’s product purchase requests and these requests influence parents’ purchasing decisions - there’s that pester power again! To try and limit exposure is difficult and I’m not here to tell you how to bring up your children, but certainly less hours in front of the television and starting early on healthy food can help. Getting children involved in cooking and often growing food as well can educate them for the future. The power of the cereal packet is immense and market leaders with exciting toys inside the packet stand like a Collossus over the humble porridge oat - its a David vrs.Goliath task to rise above

When I take people shopping, three main issues come up within several of the supermarkets: the lack of stock or variety of decent bread, cereal and non alcoholic drinks. The other week I was shopping with a client in one of the major supermarkets and the soft drinks aisle was about 98% full of sugar free/high energy drinks full of corn syrup and artificial sweeteners with about 2% dedicated to cordials/organics etc. This same supermarket had the whole bread aisle full of the two main brand leaders which to my mind does not even pass as a real loaf of bread. The cereal aisle was much the same - anything organic and not full of sugar was certainly less obvious or on the bottom shelf. What happens if this is your only nearby supermarket - are you then forced into buying produce you don’t want unless you drive out of town? Do you have the time to do this? Does it matter that much to you?

~

Food advertising is big business and its getting more clever. The countless food advertising tricks that are used to persuade us to buy their products is disturbing.

~

Food manufacturers are pushing the limits of what is truth and what is a simple technical-

ity. So many packaged foods are little more than white flour, fat, sugar, salt and additives in various combinations, yet they are marketed as modern-day medical miracles, offering vague benefits for virtually every part of the body.

MARKETING CLAIMS AND TRICKS Reduced sugar is still a hook for many people purchasing foods that they think will be more healthy for them. However reduced sugar is replaced by a range of artificial sweeteners. Whole grain is another minefield - particularly if there is more whole grain than any other ingredient - it still may contain corn syrup, artificial sweeteners etc. You are being marketed a healthy product when in fact its anything but that. I recently saw a fizzy drink can with includes Antioxidants as if that made the drink healthy - trust me any antioxidants that might be present would be negated by the rest of the ingredients. I’ve seen cereal brands saying heart healthy (what does that even mean?!) or good for weight control but the ingredients tell me something different - is it any wonder why people fail to lose weight? The other huge bugbear I have is the under 100 calorie snack bar - you eat it because you think it will not make you fat because you have bought into the calorie myth but again the truth lies at the back of the packet where the hydrogenated fat or the artificial additives lie. Much of this is common sense and yet I

Wellbeing 9

Wellbeing nutrition see even the most switched on mums and dads get caught out. If I asked all of you now how much protein, salt, fat and carbohydrate you need daily - do you know? I suspect most of you don’t carry those figures in your head and that is why looking at the ingredients is the best bet you have when you shop. You are consumers not dieticians and nutritionists - its not your job to carry those figures around!

HOW IMPORTANT IS YOUR 5 A DAY? Did you think five a day was a global campaign - that all countries needed to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day?

BREAD

Well if you did, you’d be wrong! In actual fact it’s a different number for every country campaign. The USA is 9 portions, two and half cups of fruit and vegetables per day. Australia is 5 but the portion is 75g. Denmark, 6, Ireland is 4, Switzerland, 5, as is Belgium and Austria. Italy... well they are very laid back with their advice to eat more fruit and vegetables - no exact number! Ah now wonderful Greece - they recommend 3 portions of fruit and 6 of vegetable - so sensible. Germany looks pretty cool with 3 portions and their food pyramid has more emphasis on vegetables than fruit. This 5 a day programme started in 1991 as The National Five a Day For Better Health Programme. It was a public-private partnership between the Produce for Better Health Foundation and the National Cancer Institute and it

started in sunny California. It has since become the worlds largest education initiative. So far so good. However there is a conflict of interest as The Producers For Better Health Foundation whose purpose is to get us to eat more fruit and vegetables are sponsored by these folk!:

or f s p i t s ’ e buying bread, cereal and softdrinks Kat

If it has a non see through plastic wrapper on it and you cant see the bread, don’t buy it. If its heavily marketed on TV don’t buy it. Go for own brand wholemeal bread that you have an ingredient list to read. Organic breads, artisan breads, soda breads, rye breads, pita breads etc might not be so easily found in some of the major supermarkets, but they are getting better. Don’t assume that baked on the premises bread is any better again - where’s the ingredient list?

CEREAL

SOFT DRINKS

To be honest, no cereal is all its cracked up to be except plain 100% oats or a puffed rice brand with no sugar. Unless its got one ingredient its more than likely got sugar as the first ingredient or the delightful addition of glucose syrup or corn syrup. So yes that’s 95% of the supermarket aisle gone before you’ve started! The odd packet of Dorset organic cereal/granola etc is fine but don’t forget its still sugary with dried fruits and honey! Better to stir a spoonful into yoghurt or try and add more nuts!

Go for cordials - try Rocks, Belvoir, Firefly, or 100% non concentrated juice. Avoid all sugar free/ reduced sugar drinks. You may notice that the soft drinks aisle is full to bursting with all the drinks I haven’t listed and there will be a small portion of the aisle with a few bottle of the above. If you want more choice, quite frankly I’d go to Waitrose and check out their great range of non alcoholic drinks! And remember fructose is sugar - and fruit juice is concentrated sugar - keep it to a minimum!

10 Wellbeing

Excuse the cynicism but one could say that these companies stand to benefit if the government dictated the five a day campaign. While there is nothing wrong with tomatoes being sponsored, there is still a conflict of interest with the above companies.

SO WHY 5 A DAY?

Logistics firms: C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Inc.; Caito Foods, Inc.; Capital City Fruit; Coast Produce Company and J&J Distributing. Specialist producers: Driscoll’s (berries); U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council (blueberries); Ocean Mist (artichokes and fresh vegetables); Giorgio (mushrooms); Columbine Vineyards (grapes); Nature sweet tomatoes; Potandon Produce (potatoes) and Paramount Farms (nuts and flavoured nut snacks). General fresh produce firms: W. Newell & Companies; Eurofresh Farms; Giumarra Companies; General Mills (Green Giant brand); Sun-Maid raisins and dried fruit; Kagome juices and Duda Farm Fresh Foods; Other: such as BASF (the world’s leading chemical company, and a provider of fungicides, insecticides and herbicides); Glad Products Company (containers, bags and ovenware); Nunhems USA (commercial vegetable seeds);

Well it certainly did not come from evidence based scientific investigation! In essence its easy to remember and it is a marketing campaign and the most successful the world has ever seen. With little or no evidence at this time of any benefit from eating exactly 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, it is astonishing to look at how far this marketing campaign has gone. Questions that need to be asked are what has it achieved? Has it worked? What was its aim in the first place? The campaign has since been reviewed. Between 1991 and 1998 the figure of Americans who knew to eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day rose from 8% to 39% - so that’s a good thing right? Well, at the same time the obesity figures rose from 12% to 17.9%. It’s all a bit nonsensical and then of course for those of you who saw the Dispatches programme - The Myths about your 5 a day - a made up magical number was then taken by marketing and advertising companies and twisted even more into the fabric of what we eat. It’s exhausting isn’t it!

Added to the already mind boggling food labelling shopping, food advertising and food marketing is big business. We need to simplify the whole thing and fast. The only part of dietetics I don’t like is the fixation of looking at the front of the packets of food with the wheels and fat/protein breakdown. We need to look at the ingredients list, we need to know what manufacturers are putting into food not just the fat content. So always look at the ingredients on the back of the packet - you will find out very quickly whether this product is worth buying. As I’ve said before fast food outlets don’t let you easily see the full list of ingredients in their products perhaps because you wouldn’t buy them if you really knew. I’m more concerned at the hideous ingredients like anti foaming agents that go into chips than I am at how much saturated fat it contains. So when you are next food shopping which most probably will be in the next week - if you haven’t done already, open your eyes!! There are aisles which just need to be avoided full stop. Look at the back of all the ingredients - for example Ragu tomato and basil sauce for spaghetti last time I looked - great ingredient list - Dolmio, hideous! Keep looking, keep reading as the products can change. Of course if you buy one ingredient at a time you don’t have this problem!

P

enny’s personal interest is in Hypnotherapy and NLP. “I can honestly say it transformed my life, so much so, that I trained in the respective therapies, so that I could help others, the way it had helped me. I gained my Advanced Diploma in Hypnotherapy 2002 and hold membership with The General Hypnotherapy Register; The Hypnotherapy Association; The Royal Society for the Promotion of Health, The Hypnotherapy Society and am listed on the NHS register for alternative and complementary health.” Penny owns and runs Mindfield Training, The South West School of Clinical Hypnotherapy and her private practice. “The way hypnotherapy and its related techniques help people never cease to amaze me and I feel privileged to work in this profession. Sometimes, when a person is caught up with an issue or problem, it is hard to see outside it or to get a different

perspective on it. I believe that we can change if we have the desire to; that each person is unique; that we are capable of making our dreams a reality ‚Äì and that we can achieve what we want to achieve.” MIND-FIELD TRAINING inc SWSCH (SW Hypnotherapy) As we move ever deeper into the 21st Century, hypnotherapy continues to make positive and ever more revolutionary changes to our understanding of human consciousness and the human mind. Mind-Field Training offers courses in Clinical Hypnotherapy & Life Coaching which provide both the theory and practical hands-on experience to explore many useful and helpful aspects of hypnosis, NLP and allied holistic therapies. It is suitable for self-knowledge and selfdevelopment for those already offering therapeutic services who wish to understand and

It is also suitable for those who are a ‘people person’ and are considering a change of career and wish to help people to change their lives in a positive way. The training will enable you to help people positively transform their lives. differing issues and she believes her own personal experiences from retail management to her therapy practice gives her a broad, open and solid base in which to help people. Drawing on what has helped her, helps them. Penny has developed her own methods, seen what has worked and what hasn’t, tweaked, personalised and spent time on her own continuing personal development. Penny’s motivation is to help people to help themselves. “When a person thanks you for changing their life, seeing them smile, asking if they can hug me to say thank you, to be recommended, to know that I am helping people, that what I am doing with my life is making a difference for someone else in theirs. What else is better than helping someone to achieve their dreams, their reality?! It is so worthwhile and I love doing what I do.” Penny’s key influencers and people she admires are her

daughter, Richard Bandler, her own trainer in hypnotherapy, her cranial osteopath ‚Hanneke, Brandon Bays, Eda Soar- her reflexologist who have all played their part in bringing her to where she is now. Penny also say, “I am also a key influencer in my life, I choose and chose this path!” Changing career and running a business has many challenges and Penny has had many, many challenges in her own personal life in health, emotionally and mentally but it was the sheer determination and strength of mind not to quit (even though she felt like it many times) she has had knock backs, lost a lot of money by helping people out, moved over 20 times in 15 years but I know overcoming all these challenges have helped to make her a stronger person and a better practitioner. Penny now plans to expand the training in the South East, to work with more companies and to continue to help others.

A little girl I treated last year, she was 4 years old and had bad dreams, I saw her once, we spent over two hours together and at the end of the session she said “I will never forget you” I will never forget her either. HOME

A sanctuary for us to bathe in the reflection of our complete self.

A home can tell a story of unhealed wounds, suppressed desires and dreams. It is a map showing us the way back to ourselves. “It is your journey. I can help clear the way, but you must walk the path. The Four Winds Society.

H

aving the courage to step into our own unique journey and being open to transformation, we can begin to know ourselves and ultimately love ourselves. This unconditional love is the healing power every one of us has within. Tools are given to help us but we are the only ones who can make the transformation. As a child my favourite party game was dead fishes. The object of the game was to stay as still and quiet as dead fish. The last one to move was the winner. I think it was the quiet interlude that I liked after all the noise and chaos of the party. As the pace of life quickens all around us we are presented with a choice. To run ourselves inside out or to slow our pace and lower the volume of noise, so we can hear the birds singing and we can see the beauty of the

flowers. We can choose to reconnect with the sacred and nurture our connection to Mother Earth and the infinite source - God. Sounds simple, and it is! Practicing Feng Shui alongside other practices such as yoga and meditation can create a sanctuary of calm for us to nurture ourselves from the brutality of the modern world. If we focus, and discipline ourselves from mundane distractions and material obsession, from the scattered, overloaded mind to crystal clear clarity, we can begin to bring ourselves back into balance. Feng Shui is a tool that helps us to see our life magnified through the lens of our homes.

We are able to identify problem areas in our lives, blockages within ourselves that are reflected in the blockages represented by our material possessions. Hoarders and clutter bugs are in need of deep healing from traumas buried deep within and general clutter reflects a sign of not wanting to deal with issues right now. By loving and accepting all parts of ourselves light and dark, we can achieve wellness through acknowledgment and put to rest our self- judgements and criticism. Shamanic Healing has been used by mankind as an ally for many years. The shaman knows the importance of

wholeness, of reintegrating parts of ourselves that we have denied, of healing deeprooted traumas and bringing into balance our physical, emotional, mental and energy bodies. My services as a Feng Shui consultant start right from the basics of de- cluttering and physical issues all the way to emotional and mental issues and going deeper to soul level with Shamanic Healing. All levels are interconnected and make up our whole being. All levels need to be addressed and brought into alignment. The journey starts at home and ends bringing you home to yourself. One can go as deep or as light as they like. You set the pace of your own journey to wholeness. We use the Feng Shui map of your home and take it step by step from this point of reference. Shamanic Healing is implemented when we come up against blockages that are preventing you from

moving forward in your life. My job is to assist you in identifying these blockages and releasing them. Whilst we use the Feng Shui map to outline life in the present, we are also mapping a visionary map for who you are becoming. ‘’Your home is not only a reflection of you but, in its deepest sense, it also has the power to mould you and shape your future. When you implement changes in your home, you will notice that often your life is also transformed; instantly, dramatically and permanently.” Denise Linn. “Doing the inner clearing work, both inside ourselves as well as inside our homes, and ‘clearing the noise’ that has distracted, demoralised and disempowered us creates a powerful, natural serenity in which peace can flourish.” Claire Rumore. Relax...

it’s not magic! Wellbeing Magazine talks to Matt RobertsWard at Step into Healing about what hypnotherapy is...and what it isn’t! We hear a lot about hypnotherapy helping with weight loss or quitting smoking, but what else can it be helpful for? These are certainly very common problems, and hypnotherapy can be very successful in these areas, but there’s a much wider spectrum of everyday things people may need help with. These include sleep problems, nerves

when speaking in public or before an interview, excessive drinking, or just a lack of general direction in your life. How does hypnotherapy work? Many of our beliefs are formed in childhood, which is why they’re so firmly entrenched in our minds. But this doesn’t mean the negative patterns can’t be altered. Hypnotherapy works with changing these beliefs through relaxation and regression. How quickly does it work? It’s important to understand there’s no quick fix, especially if you’ve been living with these problems for years. You’ll need to build up a working partnership between you and your therapist, and that takes time.

answer’s yes. If you can drive or swim you’re a good candidate for hypnosis, because your brain is able to slip into ‘automatic pilot’ and that’s exactly what’s needed. Then all you have to do is relax. I’ve seen hypnosis on TV, am I likely to lose control or not remember my session? The reassuring news it – it can’t make you do anything you don’t want to do, so there’s no chance you’ll ever be talked into doing anything embarrassing or silly. I’ve still got a few doubts about whether it’s for me. Any advice? Certainly. Why not try a free session and see how you get on? Give me a call on 07955 166426 and I’ll be happy to arrange this.

ASK THE t r e p x e Wellbeing Magazine speaks to Michael Lingard of ButeykoKent & AsthmaCareKent

M

ichael Lingard trained as economist, statistician and accountant, working as a Financial Analyst with Fords (UK) Tractors & O & M Consultant and then as Operational Research Consultant with Hawker Siddeley Group Management Services. Having spent two years as university lecturer he then joined his wife as a restaurateur. Later Michael decided to retrain as an Osteopath at the European School of Osteopathy, established one of the first Holistic Clinics in 1981. Six years ago Michael took an interest in the Buteyko Method, driven by a desire to help create a revolution in medicine, to shift the dominant emphasis from pathology and disease to ethology and health. Despite commercial and establishment influences resisting such changes, Michael believes the public & economic pressures will eventually prevail.

Q: What is your approach to health I am passionate about the work of Professor Konstantin Buteyko who identified one of

18 Wellbeing

the major factors contributing to so many diseases of modern man, namely chronic hidden hyperventilation or in simple terms ‚Äúover-breathing‚Äù. I describe this as the 21st Century Epidemic in a YouYube video www.youtube.com/ watch?v=DF0Kv36r4mk It has taken over a century to have the significance of our structure recognised as an important factor in our health, only in recent years has the effect of diet on our health been accepted but modern medicine still has not recognised the vital importance of good breathing on our health. Professor Buteyko claimed over 150 modern diseases were associated with chronic hidden hyperventilation, it is possible that over 90% of the population in the West habitually over-breathe. All the symptoms and conditions associated with over-breathing are currently treated principally with drugs to ameliorate or suppress them. The ‘catch 22’ is that, not unreasonably, the medical profession demands more clinical research proof of this relationship between hyperventilation and disease.

The funding for over 95% of clinical research comes from drug companies. However teaching people to normalise their breathing with the Buteyko Method invariably reduces the need for drugs (asthmatics on average are able to reduce their reliever medication by up to 90% and preventer medication by up to 50%). No self-respecting drug company is willing to fund research that would demonstrate patients could manage with less medication. Thus it is left to the public to vote with their feet & their wallets and to put pressure on their doctor to offer this training on the NHS. With asthmatics alone the NHS could save millions of pounds by offering Buteyko training, two doctors have already demonstrated this in their own practices. I spend a lot of time trying to get this message across to anyone who will listen. I find that no one ever breathes the same after listening to an introductory talk on this subject, once people have the facts and the understanding they begin to

Photos from orthotropic dental work that involves correction of breathing and muscle development but does not usually use braces or tooth extraction. change their habits for the better, surely this is the best kind of health care?

Q:What are your business ethics? Believe in what you do. Give your best service and advice. Respect the individual. No one size fits all. Give value for money Be honest Don’t make exaggerated therapy claims Never destroy hope that things may get easier. we don’t have crystal balls If you want to improve your patient care, care for your patient.

Q: What motivates you? An ardent belief that we could all

be healthier and happier if given a chance. The fundamentals of a long healthy life are quite simple but we have lost this understanding and are encouraged to believe that we all need medical intervention from birth to death for every ill we might suffer. There are people like the Hunzas of the Himalayas who enjoy such a life, the men still playing polo at 90 years of age. Unfortunately there is less money in health promotion compared with disease management and in our materialistic world this counts!

How many sessions do your clients need to see results?. The full Buteyko Course consists of five sessions of 90 minutes over two weeks, usually

clients begin to experience improvements in their conditions within days of starting training.

Q: What are the results? Everyone who has completed the course has been pleased with the improvements in their general health and wellbeing and have realised that they have been given the skills to help them take better control of their health for life. Learning to breathe normally may take time but can be life transforming. Real healthcare re-empowers the patient, this is exactly what the Buteyko Method does.

Q: How much does a course cost? The full cost of a Buteyko Course is about the cost of a full car servicing but unlike your car this

Wellbeing 19

Wellbeing buteyko

is a once in a lifetime cost. The course includes five 90 minute training sessions, two follow-up sessions, twelve months followup telephone or email support, text book, work book and other literature and ButeykoKent provides Capnography tests to establish quality clinical data at no extra charge. Adult fees of £340 & children £240 for children receive a 10% discount if paid at start of the course and additional family members are charged at £100 each.

Q: What are the challenges? The main challenge for all Buteyko Educators is the challenge of changing an almost universal mindset among the general public and many doctors that breathing is naturally fine, that everyone breathes normally from birth with the exception of those with asthma or other respiratory conditions and that the bigger our breaths and the more we breathe the better our health. The truth is that up to 90% of the population in the West breathe badly, they breathe too much, often erratically and usually mouth breathe rather than using their noses for breathing. Over-breathing or hyperventilation, put very simply, makes us ill. It is the underlying problem of every asthmatic and practically every person diagnosed with a heart condition, diabetes, panic attacks, anxiety, ME, IBS, sleep apnoea or other common diseases will be found

20 Wellbeing

to be breathing two to three times more air per minute than normal. This always contributes to their disease symptoms and if eliminated there is usually a major reduction in symptoms, reduced need for medication and general improved wellbeing. Changing this mind set is truly a great challenge for us all. A wise Chinese sage Lao Tszu (300BC) summed it up with his saying ‚“The perfect man breathes as though he is not breathing”, how far this is from the teaching most of us have received since childhood, that the more you breathe the better!

Q: What are your long terms plans? Together with other Buteyko Educators worldwide I hope we can convince the medical profession of the vital importance of good breathing to the point that training such as the Buteyko Method becomes an integral part of mainstream medicine. This would save billions of pounds spent on drugs and medical interventions, improve the health of millions and almost certainly extend the lives of many who are currently the victims of chronic hidden hyperventilation with the usual cocktail of many drugs that suppress or ameliorate the symptoms due to their dysfunctional breathing.

Food for thought Since training as an osteopath, over thirty years ago I have been driven by a belief that

we are heading for a medical disaster unless there is a change in priorities, most of our resources are devoted to pathology; disease diagnosis, management and perhaps disease prevention, only minimal resources are directed towards health promotion and education. With the exception of surgery and acute emergency medicine I feel we are going through ‘The Dark Ages of Medicine’, “a pill for every ill” is good for the drug companies but not for the health of individuals or the nation. If I can help change this resource imbalance a little I will be pleased with my work. I recently attended a seminar of orthodontists who are also interested in the impact of poor breathing habits on the dental and developmental health of their patients, a fellow Buteyko Educator from Ireland was giving them a talk on the Buteyko Method. His talk was received well, as this group of orthodontists have recognised the importance of correct breathing on our early development. ‚“Beautiful children need to breathe normally, bad breathing habits may lead to a crowded teeth and disfigured or poorly developed cranial structure, or to put it bluntly, an ugly child and adult! “This is not new thinking, this idea was written about over a hundred years ago by an artist who painted the indigenous people of north and south America. He noticed how well formed and

Buteyko testimonials how healthy the indigenous people were compared with the immigrant population, it led him to write a book on the subject entitled “Shut your mouth and save your life” by George Catlin 1891 I am currently working with a computer expert on a Buteyko App for Android and iphone use. It will be free and will offer an introduction to the Buteyko Method and much more. I am hoping it will help spread the word about this health promoting concept and make the basic training available to everyone. I would prefer there is no announcement of this until it has been beta tested.

“Really helped to reduce my medication, feeling much better. Normally two to three attacks per week, since course have been able to overcome all attacks with Buteyko” William G. Iden Green, Kent

“I began to notice the benefits within a matter of days. As an asthmatic, after seven days Buteyko has already changed my breathing, asthma, sleep and has reduced my appetite, it really does work!” Daniel R. Bodiam, Kent

“My asthma was getting worse before the Buteyko course. I’ve been able to overcome most attacks, my energy has increased, my appetite lessened, I have less tension. My condition has greatly improved. I was slightly skeptical about the course but now I am a firm believer, it works!” Lisa B. Sandhurst, Kent

FOODfor THOUGHT WORDS: Pat Crawford for HADLOW COLLEGE.

Commencing a new series investigating ‘wellbeing’ in relation to animals. Animals are like humans – they don’t simply ‘eat’, they DEVOUR…FEAST….GUZZLE…. GULP….GRAZE…. SLURP …. BROWSE and CROP. In their natural environment, their species dictates the type of food they eat – and availability largely controls how much. It is rare to see an obese animal in the wild. By the same token, it is rare to see a seriously underweight animal excepting when natural disasters strike – droughts and floods for example. We use some strange analogies – we speak of someone ‘eating like a bird’ when we mean they don’t eat very much whereas – of course – many birds have a very high metabolic rate and need to eat the equivalent of their body weight on a daily basis. We also use the phrase ‘eating like a horse’ to describe someone with a large appetite. In fact, horses by comparison with birds could be said to thrive on air because, depending on their age and work schedule, they generally eat a maximum of 3.5% of their body weight per day!

22 Wellbeing

We Brits are genuine animal lovers – so much so that some continentals suggest we treat them better than we do our children! We care about their happiness and wellbeing – at the same time, we indulge them – but not always sensibly. We tend to perceive feeding titbits as tokens of love – hence a lot of domestic pets are seriously overweight to the point of obesity. Much as we love them, we impose ‘convenience’ on domestic pets and expect them to adapt to our ways and timetables. Perhaps we need to recognise some interesting facts and then consider how we might apply them to care and management. Practically everyone is aware that dogs are descended from wolves – this is confirmed by their DNA and by the fact that they are capable of interbreeding and producing viable offspring. They have the same anatomical structure and the same digestive systems. Up to this point there is probably unanimous agreement.

Now consider the differentials that we have imposed. In the wild, wolves are hunters and they eat raw meat, offal and bones. Grain barely features in their diet but they do scavenge eggs and vegetable and fruit material in small quantities. In the domestic dog we have replaced meat with highly processed foods, most of which contain a considerable amount of cereal. The processed foods are ‘balanced’ in that highly qualified nutritionists have formulated various diets to complement the nutritional requirements of dogs of varying ages, breeds, different work routines and specific needs. Formulated diets will contain the ‘right’ amount of protein, fats, carbohydrate, minerals, vitamins, et cetera.

Think on: many, many top breeders – understating the anatomy and physiology of dogs - feed raw meat and vegetables. They claim this helps to keep the animals’ teeth clean and their breath sweeter - results in shiny, healthy coats – and substantially increases their wellbeing in many other ways.

Next thought: we are aware of our own nutritional needs in relation to carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, et cetera but we don’t measure them exactly but aim to achieve a balanced – and interesting – diet by eating a wide variety of foodstuffs.

~

Imagine replacing our varied diet with a single processed food that fulfils our nutritional needs in that it contains all the ‘right’ constituents.

~

All sorts of complications might arise! Palatability – we might enjoy the first few weeks on the new regime – but month after month? Palate aside, wouldn’t our digestive system suffer if

we eat only one type of food – processed at that – to the detriment of all others? Digestion in humans begins in the mouth when we chew and it is completed in the small intestine. During its progress through the digestive tract our food is ‘processed’ in remarkably complex ways but, if all our food is already ‘processed’, the work of this remarkable factory will reduce dramatically. Further thoughts: dogs (wolves) aren’t able to cook their food. We humans are the only animals able to cook food! The digestive tract of dogs is short and well designed to deal with raw foodstuffs. The acids in the digestive tract of a dog are much stronger than ours – perfect for dealing with raw foodstuffs.

One further thought: the incidence of a range of digestive problems in dogs is increasing. Why? Does it relate to dogs being fed a diet that, although ‘balanced’, is fundamentally unsuitable for the species? Should dogs really be fed foodstuffs that contain a lot of carbohydrate in the form of cereal? It certainly fills them up – but at an expense to their wellbeing? Should dogs be fed sloppy processed foods when their digestive systems are obviously designed to deal with something quite different? Chew over these thoughts! The making of a

SPA Wellbeing Magazine talks to Jennifer Gorman, specialist Spa and Hospitality Development Consultant about spa’s, relaxation and the future of wellness centres

Q

Having worked with Channel 4’s Country House Rescue, if someone was to consider turning their home into a spa or hotel what should they consider before embarking on this project? The first thing to establish in any conceptual business is ‘its main aim’, this is absolutely crucial. In this situation, would this Spa be a business offering or for the owners own enjoyment – two very different Models. Once the ‘main aim’ is established, the strategy for development and its inclusions can be formulated to ensure every aspect for a perfect Spa delivery.

26 Wellbeing

Q

As a spa, wellness and hotel consultant, what’s the most important thing you look for in visiting a Spa? Organisation, the utmost level of attention to detail, everything done with purpose and reason. If the business and offering hasn’t been executed to the utmost levels of detail and planning, from the correct flow of the building, the correct inclusions, the right offering, perfectly trained staff etc., the guest experience will be under maximised and the business will not return ideal revenues and profits. If I am visiting a Spa, I want to be able to totally relax and if these elements are missing, my enjoyment would be compromised.

Q

What makes a great Spa and Wellness Centre? All of the above from the businesses first stages of planning through to opening and beyond. When all the correct elements have been included pre and post opening, the Spa will entirely reflect and deliver the guests needs and wants. A point of difference and individuality to give the Spa an edge over the next is always ideal.

Q

What are the top three Spa’s that you have visited and why were they so special? I couldn’t name just 3 but if choosing 3 perfect destinations

identify the weak areas and those requiring change and implement tried and tested aspects of re-development . The only way forward is to evolve the offering to one that is relevant to the markets requirements and standards. I help many businesses turn themselves around – it is always a worthy exercise to re-evaluate your current business, it can generally always do better.

Q

Do you have a favourite treatment?

for my Spa visits they would be 1) a City Spa, 2) a Caribbean Spa and 3) a Wilderness Spa These 3 offer the perfect breaks depending on my mood and needs at the time. The first would be a Spa I would visit with girlfriends, enjoying all the offerings of a large City and coming back to the tranquillity of a Spa for relaxing treatments. The second would be a chillout holiday in the sun whilst swimming and enjoying treatments in lovely Spa surroundings, away from the hustle and bustle of the beach. The third would be up in the mountains somewhere, either a wellbeing/yoga/meditation retreat in the Himalayas or a great Hotel and Spa in the Alps, summer or winter.

Q

Many Spa and Wellness centres seem to be thriving in the recession, why are some doing well and what can those that are struggling look to do to make some changes? Those that are thriving know and understand their target audiences, what they want and the elements required in their offering to achieve the guest numbers required. They operate a great business as well as offering, they consistently evolve and deliver a great service all-round and in turn they have built loyalty in their existing and new customer bases. Those that are struggling need to re-evaluate every minute detail of their business and operation to

I find it challenging to relax so the best treatment to achieve this for me is top to toe massage, literally from the tips of my hair to the tips of my toes and if that includes a facial, then all the better. Any treatment has the opportunity to be excellent when the Therapists delivery of it is the same. Vice versa, any treatment can be disappointing if the Therapist is less able with its delivery. It is all in the detail – every time, for everything across the board.

Q

Do you have a favourite skincare product? Brand wise, I go through phases depending what my skin is doing or needing at the time and so change periodically. Otherwise I would say facial exfoliator and moisturiser – I love it when I know my skin is squeaky clean and the surface of my skin is fresh and bright.

Q

Where do you see the future of Spa’s. Are there any trends/ new concepts that we can see coming up in the future? A. The word ‘Spa’ is used so universally from varying offerings from the high street salon to the Hotel Spa and back again, everyone has a Spa. For me as a specialist Spa and hospitality developer, the ‘true’ Spa philosophy remains the focus of enjoyable and purposeful wellbeing with its roots dating back many hundreds of years.

28 Wellbeing

The true and ideal ‘Spa’ offering of today focuses on all aspects of wellbeing, including hydro, water and thermal elements combined with all the modern day experiences of excellent treatments, facilities and creature comforts. Many will include a specialist ‘Medi’ spa offering which introduces real resultsdriven treatments in combination with pure relaxation. All new developments should work hard to identify good points of difference to that of the competition – helps you to stand out in the crowd!

Wellbeing through horses Horses are incredibly intuitive animals, but can they help us overcome emotional difficulties? Wellbeing Magazine talks to Emma Colyer, who runs Intuitive Horse in East Sussex.

I

ntuitive Horse provides an experience like nothing else you may have experienced before, whether you are familiar with horses or not. Emma works with her herd of 12 horses to help people through personal issues and emotional issues.

Through interacting with a horse from the ground (not riding) the horse starts to mirror behavioural and emotional states, giving you insight as to how they may be effecting your immediate environment. When Rosie (her name

has been changed) came for a session at Intuitive Horse, she wanted to spend her session exploring how she behaves in her relationships and how she can start to make changes, as she is fully aware that she puts up barriers and finds it hard to compromise. For the first part of her session, the horse displayed unsettled behaviour. Rosie and Emma then discussed how she was feeling in that moment. As she spoke about it she was encouraged by Emma to allow herself to feel it in her body as she did this the horse started to change in his behaviour, becoming still and calm.

She had been getting frustrated because the horse wasn’t paying her any attention and the more she tried to connect with him the louder his behaviour seemed to get. She realised she was wanting the horse to respond instantly to her and wasn’t waiting for a response before feeling rejected, which took her straight into feeling frustrated and impatient, this is something she does in her relationships she realised. By entering into the frustration, she was unable to find an authentic space to connect in because her head was busy with excuses and blame.

When she was honest and acknowledged her feelings she discovered what was behind the frustration and the horse calmed down and wanted to stand next to her because there was no projection on him. It is these kinds of reponses from the horse that help us to listen to how we truly feel. Intuitive Horse runs monthly three day personal development retreats for small numbers of people. We also offer private sessions and bespoke group and family days. No horse experience necessary. www.intuitivehorse.co.uk Emma 07825 036 301

POST PREGNANCY

wipe out

Any new Mums can relate to feeling constantly tired, or even wiped out. After all, your body is recuperating from the incredible physical challenge of pregnancy and childbirth. At the same time, you’re caring for a newborn that needs feeding, nappy changes, and hands-on attention around the clock, so what sleep you do get is likely to be less restorative because it’s so fragmented. There could also be other reasons for fatigue post birth, so consult your doctor if you are struggling with feeling constantly tired. Low iron levels are a common cause which can add to fatigue as many women experience lower iron levels during pregnancy and child birth can further reduce iron levels. In this case a natural iron supplement may be beneficial, such as Spatone Apple.

Midwife, Maggie Evans, comments; “Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to low iron levels due to the increased demand of iron for the optimum growth and development of the baby. In the last six weeks of pregnancy the baby builds up its own storage of iron from its mother to last for the first 4-6 months following birth. Therefore iron demands can triple by the end of pregnancy, this is often difficult to achieve from dietary sources alone, so help top up your iron levels with a natural iron supplement” Spatone Apple is available exclusively from Boots priced ¬£9.95 for 28 sachets (4 weeks supply). For mail order call 01492 640 057 or go to www.spatone.com

Top Tips to Tackle Tiredness for New Mums:

Rest

Easier said than done, but rest when you can. Try sleeping when you baby sleeps in the day and go to bed as early as possible once you have put your baby to sleep

Drink

Get plenty of fluids, try to make healthy food choices, and don’t skip meals. Now is not the time to crash diet. Food is your fuel.

Walk

Try taking your baby out for a walk every day. Exercise can give you a boost of energy, and the fresh air and movement may help you both sleep better at night.

How calm are you?

How easy is it to feel calm when your car gets clamped, it is raining and you want to go home! Is there anger, maybe a bit of swearing? Reactions to things normally arise from a combination of stimulus and habit. But is habit the best guide to behaviour or would reason be better? What would a wise man or woman do about the clamped wheel? Can habits be changed for the better? There is a better chance that decisions made during the day would be the right one if the mind is calmer. But how do we remain calm, see the bigger picture and become more effective in this challenging world? The 10 week course at the Kent School of Philosophy has a very strong emphasis on learning from the most powerful teacher of all, your own experience. It is not academic. You will examine your understanding and attitude towards key subjects and compare them with the experiences and wisdom of others. Then you choose to practice something new or carry on as you are. With this approach we can examine, in a practical way, fundamental questions such as Why is this happening to me? or Why am I here? The ideas in the course come from a wide variety of sources including Plato, Shakespeare, Buddha, Einstein, Seneca and many others from all sorts of backgrounds. Tuesdays and Thursdays 7.15 -9.15 pm Practical Philosophy - 10 week courses giving practical methods to experience the still mind and explore our place in this challenging world. 01892 616 144. practicalphilosophykent.org, info@kentschoolofphilosophy.co.uk

Health& beauty What’s new for you to try this month... Is snoring a problem? Recent research by Premier Inn has found that the second most common reason for couples arguing in the bedroom is because one of the pair snores! So whilst ‘couples counselling’ may help prevent some splits could a natural snoring remedy, that has been proven to help reduce snoring in 4 out of 5 users, be the best therapist money could buy? ‘Helps Stop Snoring’ spray, has been shown to reduce snoring in 4 out of 5 users. This isn’t a claim made by scientists in labs, but in a clinical study that questioned the partners of snorers using the products, of which 80% said snoring became much more bearable with the use of Helps Stop Snoring. ‘Helps Stop Snoring’ products work through the use of a blend of natural essential oils that help tone the soft tissues at the back of the throat, snoring often occurs when these soft tissues relax and vibrate as we breathe during sleeping. Available in most major retailers, including Boots and Sainsbury’s. www.stopsnoring.co.uk

New skin syrup for a rosier complexion Rosehips have been prized by herbalists for centuries, but they have recently become of even greater interest to dermatologists, who have found they are packed with natural goodies thought to help fight the signs of aging. Harnessing these benefits is the UK’s first rosehip syrup for women, which provides an easy and effective way for your skin to get a daily rosehip hit…What really puts rosehip oil in a class of its own however is the fact that it contains a substance called Tretinoin, a Vitamin A derivative. Tretionin was tested for its effects on skin in the US by scientists and it was found that those using it are seen to have fewer wrinkles and smoother skin tones. This has led to various skincare brands adding Tretionin to their formulas, but rosehip oil remains one of the only ways to get this skin saviour into your diet in a natural way. Belle+ is a brand new range of rosehip syrup that has been created so women can enjoy the benefits of rosehip oil in an effective and tasty way. www.phytacol.com

Totally Tranquil in Shoreham

“A peaceful space in a busy world” “Totally Tranquil started out as a dream many years ago. I was a young mum. I went to college so that I could reclaim my identity as a person,” says owner Mary. “I took a course in reflexology and within the first month of being at college I decided that one day I would open a therapy space and offer accessible, affordable tailor made treatments for all people. I went on from that original course to qualify in advanced reflexology, Swedish massage, levels 1, 2 and Master in reiki healing. I also studied for a diploma in anatomy and physiology. I met and studied with many amazing spiritual teachers and began to read Angel Cards. Three years ago I created a beautiful therapy space set in peaceful surroundings located on the ground floor, with a ramp for wheelchair users and prams. There is also a hydraulic bed that can lower to 1 foot from the floor. This makes it possible for children and people with physical disabilities and other mobility problems to receive therapy treatments.”

Totally Tranquil Treatments

I can provide hand reflexology, foot reflexology, reiki healing, Swedish massage and Rassage - a combined triple treat of reiki, massage, hand and foot reflexology. I also give Angel Card Readings to help clients reflect on their daily and life issues and find positive solutions to go forward with. Readings

can be given over the phone.

Specialised Services

I offer a telephone service for clients who find it too difficult to have face to face work. I provide an outreach therapy service and offer home visits for some of the treatments, and an intensive therapy support service where the client can obtain specialised day and night support in their own home. This is especially helpful for clients going through emotional/psychological crises.

What to expect

All clients are asked to complete a thorough medical questionnaire with me before their first treatment. This identifies any problems are and ensures delivery of the most appropriate therapy. It usually takes 15 minutes and there is a separate charge for this time. This document is then used to track your progress within the therapy space.

What Does It Cost?

“I believe everybody should be able to have treatments and readings,” says Mary, “So for people living on a restricted budget the cost is £5 for half an hour and £10 per hour (if you can afford a little more donations are welcome and low cost work is always negotiated at the beginning of the visit). If you are working the cost is £15 per half hour and £30 per hour.”

The gift shop

Within the therapy space I have created a small shop which gives a platform for local craft workers and artists to display

and sell their work and gives you the opportunity to find a unique gift.

Space for hire

Totally Tranquil is an ideal space to hold small therapeutic workshops. It is also available for hourly or daily hire to other therapists for at £10 per hour. Please contact Mary for further details.

Location

The therapy room is located at Tarmount Studios, Tarmount Lane, Shoreham by Sea, BN43 5Zd. There are great public transport links, 3 disabled parking bays immediately outside and a low cost car park 1 minute walk away. See www.totallytranquil.co
