Our first film A Small Act will be screened in Tunbridge Wells 2nd May 2011 When Hilde Back sponsored a young, rural Kenyan student, she thought nothing of it. She certainly never expected to hear from him, but years later she does. Now a Harvard graduate and a Human Rights Lawyer for the United Nations, Chris Mburu decides to find the stranger that changed his life. Inspired by her generosity, he starts a scholarship program of his own and names it for his former benefactor. Using a strong narrative, the film interweaves seemingly separate lives into a cohesive whole. With clarity and grace, A SMALL ACT, bears witness to the ripple effect a single action can create. ‘Local Carbon Budgets debate with Greg Clark MP’ on Transition Tunbridge Wells! February 3, 2011 from 7:30pm to 9:30pm Friends Meeting House The vast majority of UK emissions (around 80 percent) result from local activity – how we heat and power homes and workplaces and how we get around. As well as getting the big national decisions right, reducing local energy use is critical. Local government is in a strong position to lead and coordinate this action. Many
councils are now taking climate change very seriously, adopting ambitious local targets and rolling out strategies that are creating green jobs, cutting fuel poverty and reducing traffic. But most councils are being left behind. The challenge of climate change is too grave to be left to those councils that choose to prioritise action. A nationwide system is needed to support councils and ensure emissions come down in every local authority area. Council leaders across the country, from all
parties, are calling for Government to introduce a nationwide system of local carbon budgets to support them lead the local action needed. An alliance of business, community and environment organisations are also backing the call. See more details and RSVP on Transition Tunbridge Wells: ttwells.ning.com/events

CHILDREN OF THE
CORN! Words: Kate Arnold
F
or a long time now I’ve been aware of corn syrup in our diet, but recently it’s hit the media in a big way, particularly after the documentary film, Food Inc. This deadly stuff is infiltrating its way into our foods and the only way to try and stop its production is to read food labels and avoid the obvious foods that contain it. There is a huge campaign in the U.S. and now murmurings in the U.K. to ban it completely, and I’m sure it can be done (perhaps not this week, but give it a few years of public demand and small miracles can happen!). We are told over and over again that fat is bad, fat makes people fat and butter should be banned. However it is sugar and refined foods that are one of the main causes of the obesity epidemic. What makes matters worse is that the corn (used to make the corn syrup) is subsidised by the U.S. government, so one could argue that they are

causing the problem in the first place - how about that for getting your eyes open! Concentrating on exercise is all very well (and of course it is a vital component for shifting fat), but weight loss will only come if people stop eating addictive junk food. Those of you who saw Morgan Spurlock’s documentary Supersize Me may also remember how, about halfway through the challenge, he started craving the food that was making him ill, and it seemed by that stage he had become addicted. Being ‘addicted’ to food is a relatively new concept, but we now need to look at this seriously as one of the reasons why people eat too much of the wrong foods. What it is in the food that makes people continue to eat in this way? I call it the Hobnob theory. Why is it when you buy a packet of biscuits you have to eat the whole packet? What’s going on here? Is it just greed or is there something more sinister going on?
“one in 10 children in England will be obese by 2015” WHAT IS CORN SYRUP? In the U.K., corn syrup or highfructose corn syrup is also known as isoglucose, maize syrup, and glucose-fructose syrup. It includes any corn syrup groups that have undergone processing to convert glucose to fructose and then mixed with corn syrup (100% glucose) to produce sweetness. In the U.S. foods and products containing HFCS (high-fructose corn syrup) are typically using it as a sugar substitute and it is found in processed foods and beverages, soft drinks, yogurt, bread, biscuits, soups, salad dressing, and soup. This HFCS has replaced table sugar
Wellbeing nutrition thanks to the U.S. government’s subsidy on corn and an import tariff on sugar from overseas. This has raised the price of sucrose so high that HFCS is extremely costefficient. Since the mid 1990s, the United States federal government has subsidized corn growers. The cheapness of the corn syrup is why you can get a large junk meal in the U.S. for 99 cents. It’s so cheap that it makes poorer families so much more vulnerable. You can barely get a couple of sticks of broccoli for 99 cents. As you can see, this is a ludicrous way to run a country. Fruit and vegetables should be cheap not junk food - it makes no sense whatsoever. It makes me mad and hopefully it makes you mad as well! There is at present an internal argument going on - one side saying that this HFCS is contributing to obesity and the other side saying it’s no more harmful than regular sugar. Studies by The American Medical Association suggest “it appears unlikely that HFCS contributes more to obesity or other conditions than sucrose” but calls for further independent research on the subject. You will hear similar statements from the fizzy drinks industry (no surprise there then!), and remember if the U.S. government is subsidising
HFCS - which essentially they are - how are they going to do the massive U-turn that is needed? The easiest way is not at all, just keep sending out statements that it doesn’t effect health when they know it does. Back to the Hobnob theory (or any other biscuit that contains HFCS...) Purposefully buy a product with glucose fructose syrup in e.g. a packet of biscuits and eat a couple. Not everyone, but most people, will either have a steep rise in blood sugar (8 mmo/l or higher) or will have that ‘I need to eat the whole packet’ scenario. If you have either of those - welcome to the world of addictive corn syrup! Start your day with cornflakes and feel how starving you are three hours later (yes... cornflakes contain HFCS). Those who oppose HFCS call it as addictive as crack cocaine and heroin, and unless you checked labels you wouldn’t really notice it entering the food system. Unless you researched it yourself I suspect you wouldn’t even know what it was. In the UK, it is now being widely used instead of beet and cane sugar (sucrose), as it’s cheaper to produce and easier to blend into foodstuffs. It contains around the same number of calories as sugar, but it is thought
that the body does not metabolise the syrup in the same way as sugar and that this can lead to weight gain. Returning to the Hobnob theory, HFCS may trick the brain into thinking you need more food. Why so often is it hard to stop eating just one biscuit, how does a spoon of ice cream become a whole tub? So often I read that getting fat is down to personal responsibility and it is greed that makes people fat. What if that wasn’t necessarily always true what if people were actually addicted to the very food that was making them ill? How do people get to be 40 stone? HFCS has been labelled ‘the Devil’s Candy’ and may trigger the growth of fat cells around the liver, heart and other vital organs and even cause diabetes and heart disease. The fructose part may be to blame for artificially boosting appetite and sending confused messages to our brains regarding our satiety. As you may be aware, when you eat sugar your body produces insulin, which tells the brain that we’ve had enough to eat and high insulin levels dampen appetite. However, fructose does not trigger as much insulin as regular sugar so the brain will get the message that you are not full up and want to keep on eating. Certainly

Kate’s A
Wellbeing nutrition previous studies have linked fructose with high blood levels of triglycerides (a fat which, in excess, can increase the risk of heart disease). A study at Colorado University in the U.S. looked at more than 4,500 people with no history of hypertension, and found that those who ate or drank more than 74 grams a day of fructose (the same as two-and-a-half sugary drinks) increased their risk of high blood pressure by up to 87 per cent.
I’m confused? Does this mean we shouldn’t eat fruit? In moderation fruit is fine, particularly low GI fruits - but perhaps avoid huge bunches of grapes, and high amounts of bananas and dates etc. Also be careful not to drink too much fruit juice - it’s a concentrated form of fructose and can contain quite a few calories - dilute it half and half with water. Fruit sugar per se is not bad, it’s how it is changed and combined that is the problem. HFCS is cheap and also keeps foods moist, which boosts a product’s shelf life. It also helps to provide texture to food such as cereal bars and biscuits, making them chewy, and thickens up ice cream and yoghurt drinks. It’s not just used in obviously sweet foods - glucose fructose syrup is also found in lots of products you wouldn’t necessarily imagine contain it, such as cereal and batteries. Often it appears in product ingredients lists as ‘glucose-fructose syrup’, ‘high fructose corn syrup’, or ‘HFCS’, which is the name used by some manufacturers.
10 Wellbeing
Has it been proven to affect our metabolism? Kate Arnold Scientists have indeed proved that HFCS can damage human metabolism and may well be fuelling the obesity crisis. Fructose, a sweetener derived from corn, can cause dangerous growths of fat cells around vital organs and is able to trigger the early stages of diabetes and heart disease. Fructose bypasses the digestive process that breaks down other forms of sugar. It arrives intact in the liver where it causes a variety of abnormal reactions, including the disruption of mechanisms that instruct the body whether to burn or store fat. Kimber Stanhope, a molecular biologist who led the study, says “This is the first evidence we have that fructose increases diabetes and heart disease independently from causing simple weight gain.” “We didn’t see any of these changes in the people eating glucose.” High-fructose corn syrup, or glucose-fructose syrup, is listed as an ingredient in many food and drink products in Britain, although it is virtually impossible for consumers to know the quantity and ratio of fructose used. Barry Popkin, professor of Nutrition at the University of North Carolina, and a US government adviser on health policy, said: “Historically, we never consumed much sugar. We’re not built to process it.” The Food and Drink Federation, a UK industry trade group, have said: “It makes no sense to highlight one single ingredient as a cause of obesity.”
What foods contain high fructose corn syrup? Here are some products that contain HFCS or, as its called in the UK, glucose fructose syrup: Kellogg’s Cornflakes Kellogg’s All Bran Kellogg’s Rice Crispies Ribena Ocean Spray cranberry juice (a real shocker as so many women buy this to help with cystitis) Mullerice apple & Mullerice caramel Yoplait Petits Filous (marketed at children) Fromage Frais McVities HobNobs McVities Jaffa Cakes Carte D’Or ice cream Weightwatchers vanilla and fruit fromage frais (this is worrying as this is so called ‘diet’ food) Frubes Mr Kipling Bakewell slices Lucozade Yop yoghurt strawberry Going round the supermarket the number of products with this has risen greatly, and sadly there are just too many to list.

oriander (Coriandrum sativum), an annual herb in the Apiaceae family - to which carrots also belong – has been used for culinary and medicinal purposes for hundreds of years. It is thought to have been cultivated in Greece from before the second millennium BC - about half a litre of coriander mericarps were discovered in the tomb of Tutankhamun - there is archaeological evidence of it having been in use in Macedonia during the Early Bronze Age – and it is mentioned in the bible (Exodus 16 – 3). Although all parts of the plant are edible, the parts most commonly used are the fresh leaves and the dried seeds. Modern herbalists make use of coriander to treat a range of problems – but it is also used in conventional medicine both as a flavouring agent and to soothe the stomach in compounds that cause irritation. Coriander

has been used in the treatment of diabetes, the seeds are claimed to lower cholesterol - and the juice is used to treat acne. At various times, it has been used to reduce anxiety and to relieve insomnia. The juice produced by boiling coriander and cumin seeds together - allowing the liquid to cool - and then straining it can be drunk as a diuretic. Research indicates that the seeds and leaves of coriander contain antioxidants and that food flavoured with it remains unspoilt for longer. In addition, the leaves have an antibacterial activity against Salmonella choleraesuis. In some parts of India, the seeds are boiled in water and the fluid drunk to relieve colds. And a paste made from pounded coriander seeds, water and oatmeal can be applied to relieve the pain of rheumatism. The seeds of the coriander have been used as a spice for centuries

- either whole but more often in ground form. Ground coriander doesn’t keep too well because it tends to lose its flavour and so it is best to store the seeds intact and grind as required. Heating the seeds in a dry pan for s short period before grinding produces a wonderful aroma - and some cooks think it also enhances the flavour. Corinander is often combined with cumin – especially in Indian cooking when it is used as a spice in curries and garam masala. In Europe the seeds are used in pickling and, roasted, they are eaten as a snack food in various parts of the world. Coriander seeds are a popular ingredient in spicy German sausages and they are employed in ‘variety breads’ in several countries. The fresh leaves make a tasty addition to salads - and a spicy addition to sandwiches. Coriander can grow to twenty or more inches tall and, with its
Wellbeing gardening pretty leaves and fragrant scent, it makes an attractive addition to flowerbeds. A pot of coriander is a graceful addition among traditional container plants such as geraniums but the plant is rather ‘fragile’ to transplant and so the ideal is to sow the seeds in the growing location. It is feasible to plant coriander from seed at this time of year – providing either a heated greenhouse or a window sill in a warm and light – and free from draughts - area of the house is available. Place the seeds in a jar of slightly warm water and leave overnight in a warm – not hot – place. Depending on the final location, choose either a large pot from which the plants won’t need to be removed – or – to make transplanting easier use small pots in which to grow seeds singly. Fill with light potting compost place the pot/s on a tray to prevent the sill or other surface becoming marked. Using a finger as a ‘trowel’, make a hole about an inch deep for each seed. Keep the compost very slightly damp – but do not allow the pot to stand in water. The seeds should begin to germinate – providing the location is sufficiently warm and light – in about two weeks. The foliage can be used as a herb - is brilliant as a garnish and delicious in soups and savouries – but don’t forget to allow some plants to grow to full maturity so that the seeds can be collected to use whole or ground into spice. As well as the multiple culinary uses, save some seeds, sow at intervals – and have coriander available all year round.
Baked Salmon with Coriander Chutney Tapenade Fresh coriander makes a delicious chutney style tapenade that gives the simplest baked fish a more interesting flavour. There’s no need to discard the coriander stalks as they’re just as flavour packed as the leaves
Ingredients 3 tbsp olive oil 4 x wild salmon fillets, each about 125g, skinned 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 25g pack coriander, chopped 1 tsp cumin seeds, lightly crushed 25g sultanas Cook’s Tips Plump salmon fillets are particularly good in this recipe but other pieces of fish like cod, haddock, monkfish or halibut can be used instead. Sultanas accentuate the ‘chutney’ like flavour of the topping but if you don’t like them, use a handful of lightly toasted pine nuts instead.

Instant Millionaire Why do some people succeed in becoming millionaires while others only dream about it? What do they know that others don’t? The answer to these questions is at the heart of of The Instant Millionaire: A Tale of Wisdom and Wealth (New World Library, August 2010). Written by millionaire Mark Fisher, this memorable fable is based on the true story of his meeting with an old man who passed on the secrets of his success.
T
here was once a bright young man who wanted to get rich. He had had his fair share of disappointments and setbacks, it couldn’t be denied, and yet he still believed in his lucky star. While he waited for fortune to smile, he worked as an assistant to an account executive in a small advertising agency. He was inadequately paid and had felt for some time that his job offered him little satisfaction. His heart was simply no longer in it. He dreamed of doing something else, perhaps writing a novel that would make him wealthy and famous and end his financial problems once and for all. But wasn’t his ambition a bit unrealistic? Did he really have enough talent and technique to write a bestseller, or would the pages be filled with the bleak, unfocused ramblings of his inner misery? His job had been a daily nightmare for more than a year. His boss spent most
16 Wellbeing
of each morning reading the newspaper and writing memos before disappearing to indulge in a three-hour lunch. He also changed his mind continually and gave contradictory orders. But it wasn’t only his boss — he was surrounded by colleagues who were also fed up with what they were doing. They seemed to have abandoned any sense of vision; they seemed to have given up altogether. He didn’t dare tell any of them about his fantasy of dropping everything and becoming a writer. He knew they would treat it as a joke. When he was at work he often felt cut off from the world, as if he was in a foreign country, unable to speak the language. Every Monday morning he wondered how on earth he was going to survive another week at the office. He felt totally alienated from the files piled high on his desk, from the needs of clients clamoring to sell their cigarettes, their cars, their beer.... He had written a letter of
resignation six months earlier and had walked into his boss’s office a dozen times with the letter burning in his pocket, but he had never been quite able to go through with it. It was funny; he would not have hesitated three or four years ago, but now he seemed unsure of what to do. Something was holding him back, some kind of force — or was it simply cowardice? He seemed to have lost the nerve that had always helped him get what he wanted in the past. He kept waiting till the time was ripe, finding all kinds of excuses for not jumping into action, wondering if he could ever really succeed. Has he turned into a perpetual dreamer? Did his paralysis spring from the fact that he was saddled with debts? Or was it because he had simply started to get old, a process inevitably triggered the minute we give up our visions of the future? One day, when he was feeling especially frustrated, he suddenly thought of visiting an uncle of his who had become a millionaire. Perhaps he might be able to give him some advice, or better yet, some money. His uncle was a warm, friendly
person who immediately agreed to see him. He refused to lend him any money, however, claiming he wouldn’t be doing him a favor. “How old are you?” his uncle asked, after listening to his tale of woe. “Thirty-two,” the young man whispered timidly. “Do you know that by the time J. Paul Getty was twenty-three he’d already made his first million? And that when I was your age, I had half a million? So how in the world is it that you are forced to borrow money at your age?” “Beats me. I work like a dog, sometimes over fifty hours a week....” “Do you really believe that hard work is what makes people rich?” “I...I guess so...anyway, that’s what I’ve always been led to believe.” “How much do you make a year — $35,000?” “Yeah, about that much,” replied the young man. “Do you think that someone who earns $350,000 works ten times as many hours a week as you do? Obviously not! So if this person earns ten times more than you do without working any more than you do, then he must be doing something quite differently than you. He must have a secret you are totally unaware of.” “That must be true.” “You’re lucky you understand that at least. Most people don’t even get that far. They’re far too busy trying to earn a living to stop and think about how they could get rid of their money problems. Most
people don’t even spend an hour of their time trying to figure out how they could get rich and why they’ve never managed to do so.” The young man had to admit that, despite his burning ambition and his dream of making a fortune, he had never taken the time to really think his situation through. Everything seemed to distract him and prevent him from facing up to a task that was obviously of fundamental importance. The young man’s uncle was silent for a while, then smiled. “I’ve decided to help you out. I’m going to send you to the man who helped me get rich. He’s called the Instant Millionaire. Have you heard of him?” “No, never,” the young man said. “He chose that name because he claims he became a millionaire overnight after discovering the true secret of making a fortune. He claims he can help anyone become a millionaire overnight — or at least acquire the mentality of a millionaire.” His uncle turned to a large map on the wall and pointed to a small, somewhat isolated town. “Have you ever been there?” “No.” “Why not give it a try? Go and find him. He just might reveal his secret to you. He lives in a fantastic house, the most beautiful one in the whole town. You shouldn’t have any problem finding it.” “Why don’t you just tell me the secret? Then I won’t have to take the trouble of going there.” “Simply because I don’t have
the right to. When the Instant Millionaire confided it to me, the first thing he did was make me swear never to tell it to anybody. However, he did say I could refer people to him.” All of this seemed both surprising and involved to the young man. It certainly aroused his curiosity. “Are you sure you can’t tell me anything? Anything at all?” “Absolutely positive. What I can do is recommend you highly to the Instant Millionaire.” The young man’s uncle pulled out a sheet of elegant writing paper from a drawer in his massive oak desk, took his pen, and hastily scribbled a few lines. He then folded the letter, put it in an envelope, and handed it to his nephew. “Here’s your introduction,” he said, “and here’s the millionaire’s address. One last thing. You must promise not to read this letter. If ever you do open it, despite my warning, and you still want it to work for you, you’ll have to pretend that you haven’t opened it. But how can you undo what’s already been done?” The young man didn’t have the vaguest idea what his uncle was talking about, but he agreed. His uncle had always been a bit eccentric, and he was doing him a favor, after all, so he decided not to press the point. He thanked him warmly and left. Infertility Insights and Options Approximately a quarter of couples have difficulty conceiving at some point in their lives, leading to approximately 1 in 6 consulting a fertility specialist in hospital. However, the number of couples who are actually infertile is lower, at around 5%, so if you are struggling to conceive it is well worth exploring the issues and options.
Causes of Infertility People tend to think of infertility as a women’s problem, but the reality is that infertility is equally common in men and women accounting for about a third of cases each. In the remaining cases, the cause of infertility cannot be identified. Fertility problems are on the increase; this is largely attributed to increasing exposure to environmental toxins in our lives and because women are starting their families later. Female fertility problems are more likely to occur in women with irregular or absent periods, with a history of sexually transmitted infections (which may damage the womb or fallopian tubes), with ovarian problems, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (a condition associated with multiple cysts in the ovaries) and/ or endometriosis (where womb tissue grows inappropriately in the fallopian tubes or the womb). Male infertility is most commonly due to abnormal semen, reduced sperm count or reduction in sperm quality. Factors affecting fertility in both men and women include being overweight, a history of sexually transmitted infections, smoking, exposure to chemicals, pesticides and other environmental factors and stress. Stress can reduce libido (sex drive), affect ovulation and limit

sperm production. Alcohol, illegal drugs and certain medicines can also play a role in infertility.
Why age matters? Men and women are most fertile during their 20s. In women, fertility declines more quickly with age; several factors are involved, particularly reduction in egg quality. Around one third of couples where the women is over 35 have fertility problems, this increases to two thirds where the woman is over 40. The NHS recommends that you consult your GP if you have not conceived within one year of having regular unprotected sex (every 2 – 3 days), and sooner if you have any reason to be concerned about your fertility or if you are a woman over 35 – as fertility testing can be a lengthy process.
Treatment Options Medical treatment options include prescription drugs and hormones, surgical procedures (to clear fallopian tubes
for example) and assisted conception, such as intrauterine insemination (IUI), where the man’s best quality sperm are inserted directly into the womb, or in vitro fertilisation (IVF). IVF involves collecting a woman’s egg, fertilising the egg with sperm outside the woman’s body and then placing the fertilised embryo back in the woman’s womb. During the treatment process, the woman receives several drugs and hormones to help maximise the success of the treatment. The overall success rates of IUI and IVF are 15% and 29% respectively, but decline as a woman ages. Some of the medications and medical procedures used to treat infertility can cause unwanted side effects or complications. NHS funded fertility treatment and eligibility varies across the UK so some couples opt for private treatment which can be expensive. Today an increasing number of couples are using complementary therapies to help with infertility and associated problems.
Wellbeing infertility by 65% in women receiving in vitro fertilisation (IVF). A 2004 study in the USA found that 51% of women receiving IVF with acupuncture became pregnant compared to 36% of those who had IVF only. The latter group had higher rates of miscarriage and stillbirth (20%) compared to those women who had received
Acupuncture for Fertility and IVF Acupuncture has been used in China and the East for thousands of years to treat a wide range of conditions including fertility. The evidence for the success of acupuncture in treating a range of fertility problems is well documented. The World Health Organisation (2003) lists female infertility, male sexual dysfunction, polycystic ovary syndrome among conditions for which the therapeutic effect of acupuncture has been shown. Acupuncture for fertility has been shown to help increase blood flow to the reproductive organs, balance hormone levels, regulate the menstrual cycle, help improve the lining of the uterus and egg quality and reduce stress. Other conditions such as endometriosis, often associated with infertility, have also been shown to improve with acupuncture. A study published in the British Medical Journal (2008) reported that acupuncture administered at the time of embryo transfer can improve pregnancy rates
acupuncture (8%). Embarking on a course of IVF treatment is demanding and stressful. In addition to improving the outcome of IVF, acupuncture can also help reduce stress and anxiety, and the side effects of the drugs used in the IVF process. Acupuncture can also help treat male infertility. In a 2005 study at Shanghai University (China), men receiving acupuncture had a higher percentage of sperm in their semen and their sperm were healthier than those not receiving acupuncture. As a holistic therapy, acupuncture helps address the underlying health issues which may disrupt the body’s natural balance resulting in fertility problems. Optimising your Chances of Pregnancy In the absence of a specific physical fertility problem, making simple lifestyle changes to improve your health can help improve your likelihood of getting pregnant. Eat a nutritious, balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, wholemeal bread and pasta for carbohydrates and lean meat, fish or pulses for proteins. Green leafy vegetables are recommended as they are high in folic acid which helps prevent birth defects. Also be aware of foods to avoid. Aim for a healthy weight with a body mass index (BMI) of 19-25. It is vital to stop smoking, cut out alcohol and illegal drugs. Most importantly – have plenty of sex! If you have regular periods and we call the first day of your period Day 1, then you are likely to ovulate between Day 10 and Day 16. It’s best not to get too stressed about the specific timings, just try to have
regular sex during the days when you may be ovulating.
Managing Stress & Anxiety Fertility problems can be deeply distressing, especially where infertility is long lasting or not resolved. Infertility may result in depression, anxiety, sexual difficulties, relationship problems, marital tension and feelings of guilt, anger, bereavement or loss. In addition, stress levels may be worsened as a result of the side effects of medical fertility interventions or worries about the cost of private fertility treatment. On top of all this, your well meaning friends may be telling you - just relax and it will happen......aaaarrrrgh! If you are feeling stressed, an important first step is recognising that it is reasonable, indeed it is quite normal, for you to feel some anxiety about your situation. You need to find a stress reduction programme which works for you – we are all different. Regular exercise is proven to reduce stress. If the gym is not for you, then a walk in the forest or a fun salsa class can help relieve tension. There’s a wide range of relaxation techniques available, from meditation tapes to breathing exercises and creative visualisation techniques which can help. Many couples struggling with infertility issues find it helpful talking through their emotions and feelings with a professional counsellor. Regular acupuncture, massage or reflexology can help provide relaxation and reduce tension. Whatever your situation, be kind to yourself and seek professional advice if you need it. HOW TO BOOST
your fertility If you are thinking of getting pregnant for the first time or planning to have another baby it is best to start getting your and your partners body into optimum shape and health at least 3 months before you are planning to conceive. This health and fitness programme should include stress reduction, stopping smoking and alcohol. Three months is also a good gap between IVF treatments. It gives your body a good chance to recover physically and emotionally. There is relevant research pointing out that acupuncture is beneficial to boost male and female fertility. It can improve sperm quantity and quality and reduce stress. It is known to improve blood flow to reproductive organs, help ovulation problems, lower FSH levels, aid implantation after IVF, support you throughout pregnancy. My clients find it beneficial to have a course of acupuncture treatments to get their bodies into prime condition. They look forward to their acupuncture sessions as it means time for themselves, away from the demands of our busy life styles, time to be still and therefore they are able to relax. EXERCISE for
e r u t pos
It’s interesting to see how people exercise, everyone is trying very hard to impress the opposite sex (the number 1 reason for going to the gym) by losing weight and improving their appearance. However, according to personal trainer Greg Brookes ( www.gbpersonaltraining.com), what is being performed in the gym is producing the absolute opposite of what the opposite sex is really looking for.
W
orking life has changed drastically with the advent of the computer and most of us spend hours in front of a computer every day. Think about your posture during your 8 hour day: head is coming forward, shoulders are rounding, back is arching forwards, legs are bent and muscles are shortening. Now look at the most common exercises that you see down the gym: cycling, men doing chest presses, hundreds of sit-ups and crunches. Now lets take a look at the impact of these common exercises:
CYCLING This exercise hugely develops your hip flexors. These are the muscles responsible for bringing your knees to your chest. These muscles are attached to your lower spine and the top of your thighs. The more you work these muscles the more you encourage an excessive arch in your lower back (lordosis) to counter balance the pull
on the upper thighs. Think about pushing your belly out and buttocks backwards and you have some idea of what this posture will look like. Now compare this to how you sit in front of a desk all day, already with your knees bent and hip flexors shortened.
CHEST PRESSES Guys love a big chest. Lying on a bench and pushing out hundreds of reps with a bar or dumbells will certainly enhance the size of your chest. But is this really what you want? Chest presses encourage your shoulders to come around even further and this not only exaggerates your daily desk sitting posture but also hides the very chest you are try to develop .
SIT-UPS AND CRUNCHES Further pulling your chin towards your hips will not cause you to get a flat stomach it will only exaggerate again your desk sitting posture. Do you really want to encourage a bent over and chin forward position Your exercise workouts need to change.
You need to be spending time in the gym correcting all the bad posture that you are getting from 8 hours of desk sitting. Take a look at yourself right now. How are you sitting?? Don’t you think that it would be better to devote your exercise workouts to pulling your shoulders backwards (not forwards with chest exercises), increasing your hip extension (rather than flexion from knees to chest), working on spine extension (not flexion as in sit-ups). Most people work on muscles that they believe the opposite sex find attractive. Guys work their chest, women their abs. If you were to change your exercises to help enhance your posture you would not only enhance your appearance but your general movement too! Now that makes a lot more sense doesn’t it…?? For a workout with a difference, why not come along to Greg Brookes’ training studio (or have him come to you) to show you the proper way to exercise to make you more attractive.

Everyone claims to have a magic exercise that will strip the fat in days or give you that flat stomach in only 7 minutes. The truth is, the body is only designed to move in a few key ways which is why PT Greg Brookes (www.gbpersonaltraining.com) has devised the ultimate workout. Include these exercise movement patterns in your workout and you’ll hit every muscle in your body resulting in quick fat loss, rapid muscle building and a workout that is totally natural.
1.
Lunge – the lunge mimics the natural walking or running pattern. You can lunge forwards, backwards, sideways, and with or without added resistance from weights. The lunge works the legs and buttocks very hard and a degree of core stability is required to remain upright.
2.
Squat – every time you sit down you perform a squat. Ensure you squat down so the thighs are parallel to the floor, this activates the buttocks properly. The squat hits the thighs and buttocks hard as well as raising the heart rate quickly. You can squat with or without the addition of a weight.
3.
Deadlift – if you pick something up off the floor then chances are you are using a variation of the deadlift. The deadlift works the buttocks, hamstrings and back. One highly effective variation of the deadlift is the kettlebell swing, this adds a more dynamic element to the deadlift and challenges the core too!
4.
Press Ups – this exercise teaches the body to push, a fundamental movement. In order to perform an effective Press Up you need good core strength to stop your body from collapsing. If you can’t hold a press up position then work on this first to condition your abs and core strength. Press Ups condition the abs, shoulders, triceps and shoulders.
5.
. Rows / Pull Ups – a vital movement for any kind of climbing or pulling. This movement works the back of the body and biceps. Rows are particularly important for correcting posture due to the amount of time we spend hunched over at the desk. Try putting all 5 of these exercises in a circuit one after the other for a complete all over body workout. Perform 8 reps of each exercise and 3 circuits. When you can do 15 reps add more resistance, it is that simple!
You can find more information about these movement patterns and how to progress them at Greg´s online membership site, www.gbptmembers.com

How you can help them with complementary therapies, remedies & one-to-one communication BEHAVIOURAL ISSUES We take our animals into our hearts, we feed them, play with them and give them a good home. In return they love us unconditionally and want to please us. But what if your cat starts urinating on your sofa? Your dog starts barking day and night and the neighbours start complaining. Your beautiful horse suddenly spins for no reason and keeps throwing you. Why are they doing this? It can become a real problem and if it continues you may begin to talk about finding your beloved animal a new home.
Nothing you try is working and it’s getting worse. How do you deal with this almost impossible situation? There is always a reason behind these behavioural issues. The cat could be demanding more attention, the dog could have been frightened by something, the horse may have an eye problem or there could be many other reasons. Working out what is behind their behaviour and then dealing with it appropriately isn’t always straightforward or easy to resolve. Using a combination of animal telepathy/communication and healing really can deal with the underlying problems, quickly and successfully.
POOR HEALTH, INJURED AND SICK ANIMALS Complementary therapies are safe and effective and can work alongside any other treatment recommended by your Vet.
26 Wellbeing
If your animal is unwell, is behaving differently or is injured, of course you should take it to the vet for a check-up, but what if things don’t improve or you wonder what else you might do to improve their health; vitamins, herbal essences, dietary changes? If your dog is getting bald patches on his coat, is scratching incessantly, but doesn’t have fleas, do you know what is causing it? Your vet is likely to give him/her a course of anti-biotics or other medication. These may help in the short term but maybe later you notice other signs of unwellness. Horses can be particularly complex to deal with, especially if previous ownership isn’t known. Traumatic situations and physical injury are often hard to detect. Complementary therapy can also work on other animals/pets, your child’s rabbit, guinea pig,
Wellbeing animals hamster or perhaps a snake, or pet Tarantula. Getting to the root cause of the problem and using healing is often very helpful. Regardless of its injury or illness, an animal can greatly benefit from healing whilst waiting for treatment and often accelerates the natural healing and recovery process.
RESCUED/TRAUMATISED ANIMALS Thank goodness for the wonderful charities that rescue and re-home unwanted and illtreated animals. The dedicated teams work tirelessly to give all the animals in their care a new start in life but working with such animals requires a lot of understanding and patience at healing at a very deep level. Hands-on healing combined with remote healing is particularly effective in cases like these.
HEALTHY ANIMALS Many humans have regular complementary health treatments as a preventative measure against ill-health.
Animals can also benefit in this way. Many therapies enhance their relaxation, boost their immune system, ease stress, and aid good sleep patterns, all of which make for a contented and healthy pet.
COMBINING ANIMAL COMMUNICATION WITH HEALING ~ HOW IT WORKS All living things have an energy field and animals also have chakras, meridians and auras. Like us, these energy centres can become unbalanced and if neglected or undetected can cause illness. Using healing methods that address these imbalances will help improve their condition. Animals are often very sensitive to receiving healing and may just get up and walk off or have a strong reaction to their first experience of some healing treatments. In this case remote/absent healing, with the permission of the owner and Vet, is very useful and often more beneficial than hands-on methods. Finding a healer that is able to ‘communicate’ with the animal and get to the root of any problem, behavioural or ill-health is important as they can find many ‘hidden’ problems that may not be diagnosed with traditional methods. Animals love this, as it is sometimes the first time a human has been able to ‘talk’ to them this way.

Distant healing for horses Royal is a 15.1hh Leopard Spotted Appaloosa which I’ve owned for 8 years and prior to the last 12 months I’ve had no problems from him whatsoever. Then for no apparent reason he would spin very sharply to the right. I did all the usual things, however he got far worse when someone else rode him or when he was without his field mate Kizzie. This was a real problem and felt I should sell him, however I wasn’t willing to sell him on with his problems. I emailed his photo to Carole & within a couple of weeks his behaviour had changed. For the first time he would come and greet me at the gate. After a couple of hands on sessions Carole said that she was getting a pain down the right side of her face and felt that this was where the problem was, particularly his eye. Royal’s body language when the healing sessions were taking place was incredible. He was very relaxed and licking and chewing the whole time. I called out the Vet who diagnosed a cataract in the right eye which was causing the problems on his right side. Because a horse has peripheral vision the cataract meant he felt unsafe. Appaloosas are very prone to cataracts and moon blindness, so therefore he will now be retired and enjoy a peaceful life with his only love, Kizzie. Sarah,

I
first met Magnus at a business breakfast meeting in Crowborough. An unlikely place to meet a 6ft 7” African masseur, dressed in full African robes. That was four years ago and since then Magnus has worked his magic at our Wellbeing events, my father-inlaws 60th Birthday and last year at our wedding. Magnus is no ordinary masseur, he is also a healer, a decendant of healers from the Izon tribe. He has a presence that makes him stand out and not just because of his height. His calm nature, big smile and warm heart make the room light up when Magnus walks into the room. People gravitate towards him, wanting to experience the gentle hands of
this wonderful healer. I have seen people who have never had a massage, people who insist that massage is not for them, line up in anticipation of what his “healing hands” may uncover. Having Magnus at your special event, whether a fund raiser, birthday or even your wedding will make for a truly memorable experience. A year on people still talk about Magnus the Masseur and how unique it was to have him offer our guests a few minutes of ‘bliss’ at our wedding. I spoke to Magnus this morning and talked about his plans for the future, he plans to massage a million people in his lifetime and knowing Magnus this is
an goal he will achieve. He has raised £1000s of pound for charities, auctioning himself for parties and events, he has massaged the rich and famous and last week he massaged Joseph McClendon III at our wellbeing event “Further Faster”. So if you are organising an event or party in 2011, give Magnus the Masseur a call and make your day a memorable one by giving your guests the gift of ‘relaxation and healing’...what better way to say thank you to your friends and family. Meet the Real Green Goddesses AT LA CLAIRIÈRE BIOHOTEL & SPA, LA PETITE PIERRE, ALSACE, FRANCE Words: Nick Hordern
Nick Hordern travels to Alsace to suss out France’s first and best Bio Spa Hotel
L
ove is in the air at La Clairiere. Two daughters’ love for their ailing parents was the spark that led to the creation of the best bio-spa hotel in eastern France. Originally designed as a hotel in the ancient forest of Parc Vosges du Nord, (the park listed as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO), it was converted to a Spa when ill-health overtook founder-owners, Alsacien Robert Strohmenger and his Belgian wife from Antwerp, Angele Vandishek. Lisbeth Strohmenger and her sister, Kareen, had the brilliant notion of creating a centre of healing to help their parents. Today, it is a thousandsquare metre health resort that is the first bio hotel in France. With an early winter snap on our usually mild south coast, I was ready to be transported into another world - to a haven set amongst a wooded paradise of oaks, beeches, alders, and pines, where I could be pampered by soothing hands and relax in the stainless steel heated outdoor pool whose water is filtered through the deep layers of sandstone

Director, Lisbeth Strohmenger [above], samples the hot spa at La Clairiere and enhanced with minerals. I took advantage of the direct line from Brighton to London’s St. Pancras, where I boarded the 12.29 pm Eurostar, arriving at the French capital just over a couple of hours later. It was a 10-minute walk from Paris Nord to my connecting train at Gare Paris Est. After two hours on the TGV, I alighted at Saverne, just this side of Strasbourg. I answered to the call of “Journaliste Anglais?” and after a 20-minute climb conducted by Francois, a taxi driver with an unnerving encyclopaedic knowledge of the British Royals latest antics, I was in the medieval village of La Petite Pierre dominated by the beautiful X11th-century Lichtenburg Castle. For a mile we ascended the thickly forested ancient Elsac Mountain in the Parc National des Vosges Nord and a fairytale first sprinkling of snow. It was 7 p.m. and Yannick and a roaring fire welcomed me to Hotel Bio-Spa La Clairiere. My room was spacious, wood-panelled and the balcony had view a of the forest, which I was to enjoy the next day as the night had already closed in.
After my effortless journey and two days’ pleasure to look forward to, I was well on the way to becoming stress-free. There was time to shower before enjoying a superb dinner cooked by Stephane Schramm, a gourmet chef serving this family hotel for 12 years. Vegetarians are offered no less than three main courses. Such is the appreciation of his outstanding healthy cuisine which only uses high quality and locally sourced products, that in neighbouring Strasbourg, inundated with first-class restaurants favoured by city folk, Council of Europe diplomats and politicians, the discerning French Embassy favours La Clairiere for outside catering where Schramm’s and Martine Holveck’s organic dishes excel. All produce is local including wild game and herbs from the forest. Sheltered by the mountain range from the winds and rain of the north, the wines of Alsace are world renowned and offer a notable range of styles thanks to the propitious climate, the different types of soil and the large number of grape

varieties planted. With my appetiser, marinated swordfish with ginger and citrus fruits, I had a glass of gewurtztraminer, exuberant and heady, even spicy, and although most Alsace wine is white, with my warming Beef Stew (Baekoffe), I indulged in a velvety Pinot Noir “V” A.O.C. produced by Rene Mure. Delicious! I ended the meal with a Munster cheese. After dinner, glamorous hotel director, Lisbeth Strohmenger, told l o or po d outdo te a me that her parents had purchased e h t Elegan a space in the forest in 1974, cleared it, and six years later in 1981, opened a hotel with 10 rooms. Fast forward to a time when Lisbeth and her sister, Kareen, realising that their parents were in poor health, decided to do something about it. They extended the size (La Clairiere now has 50 rooms) and the two sisters creatively designed a fully-equipped modern spa, gymnasium, sauna and majestic pools, on the lower ground floor that La Clair opens directly onto the forest. iere in th e Vosg es Fore Lisbeth explained that La Clairiere st has a holistic approach to a guest’s wellbeing encompassing mind, body and spirit – combining ancient Eastern therapies with the latest Western techniques. Towelled dressing gowns are provided as well as slippers. Guests are requested to don swimwear, though I was interested to learn that the more adventurous Austrians, Germans and Scandinavians, who are less reticent to bare all, prefer towels. Each new arrival is assessed as to the state of their skin, health and lifestyle. Massages of the variety full, hot and cold stone, California, Thai and spine cost 50 Euros for half an hour, 90 Euros for 1 hour. Bespoke treatments including Asianinspired therapies, Yoga, massage and Ayurveda, make extensive use of natural ingredients and age-old remedies. Guests relax in the Jacuzzi or in the heated stainless steel outdoor spa or indoor swimming pool, aromatherapy, reflexology. In La Clairiere’s English pub, I met long-term hotel resident, a compatriot, engineer Ken Grosvenor. It is apt that Ken resides in the middle of a forest as his illustrious Cheshire ancestor was huntsman to William the Conqueror, thereby sharing an impeccable pedigree with France’s first and truly magnificent bio-spa. I asked Hotel Director, Lisbeth Strohmenger, who with her sister shifted the hotel’s emphasis to one of health and diet owing to their parents’ precarious health. “How are they now?” I asked. “Thriving,” she declares, with a smile that said it all.
All facilities open to guests, including swimming pools, gymnasium - price for the night including room, dinner and breakfast = 149 Euros. Attractive longer stay packages available on request.
