HAZED 2015 CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE
Welcome to the first ever Christmas Gift Guide - I love, love, love Christmas so it was only a matter of time before this happened. I love the smell of Christmas - the fresh pine needles, the smell of baking gingerbread in our house, the ham cooking on the Weber Christmas morning. I love the textures of Christmas - the wrapping paper and sticky tape, the artificial fur of Santa’s coat and the glitter that finds itself embedded everywhere throughout the season. I love the cuddles and smiles of Christmas. I love the music of Christmas. I love it all! Do you know what else I love? Christmas shopping. There is no better way to shop, than shopping local! If you are in Christchurch pop down and see us at ‘Hazed in the Square’ this silly season! We hope that this Christmas Gift Guide helps you to stock your Christmas tree. THE ADVENT QUEEN
A BUBBALINO C H R I ST M A S In our family we LOVE chocolate, but we also wanted an advent calendar that could introduce Christmas lessons and adventures to get the family in the Christmas spirit throughout the month of December. This is how we came across some ultra gorgeous advent calendars created here in New Zealand by Bubbalino. We were lucky enough to catch up with Vanessa the visionary behind these calendars but many other fabulous pieces for a growing family... ↘ Tell us the story of Bubbalino... Bubbalino was born in 2009. I made a few bibettes for my very spilly and dribbling three month old and whilst today the dribble bib is available in

abundance from everywhere – even from places like Cotton on Kids - but back then there was nothing of the sort on the market. After receiving lots of compliments and requests while in public nationwide, I started my own business. Over the past 5 years, we have built a wonderful little brand, proudly designed AND made in New Zealand to kit out your gorgeous littles in adorable fashion pieces. I’ve dabbled in clothing but for now our mainstay is The Bibette - functional, stylish and perfectly adaptable to your little ones needs. The Dummy Keeper and Snuggle Blankies are also popular items – functional and stylish which has

always been my main objective. We recently added the Belle & Boo range to our shop because we love it so much and know you’ll love it too. ↘ How does your family get in the spirit of Christmas with your advent calendar? My kids get excited about hanging the Advent Calendar weeks before we actually do so and we have a bunch of little items we place around the house to ‘get in the festive spirit’ - all these little things have become tradition in anticipating a fun and festive time for us all. This year will be the first Christmas for our newest family member and we are all so excited about that. I have a list of things we do each year in the build up to Christmas day and include these on little cards in each day of the calendar. Some days there is a treat, but usually it’s an activity or outing related to Christmas that is revealed in each pocket. ↘ Last year you had the naughty elf visit. Will he be back this year? Oh yes - Albert, our Elf on the Shelf, visited last year for the first time and he was responsible for creating some real fun and crazy magic in our house. The kids loved him so much and each morning they would leap out of bed and go hunting for him until they found him and whatever crazy antic he’d been up to the night before. My eldest doesn’t really believe he’s real but she still gets into it for the laughs. It’s hard work though making him crazy every night for 24 nights

in a row. I think this year he might just do every other night and leave a letter to let the kids know that there is major traffic congestion to and from the North Pole so they don’t expect him every single night! » You make so many gorgeous things, what do you enjoy most about creating? I love the response and feedback I get from customers most of all. Seeing my creations on little people or being sent photos of Advent Calendar Bunting hanging on the walls of homes around New Zealand (and the world) brings a huge smile to my face.
» This is your first year as a family of five, what are you looking forward to most this Christmas? As always Christmas for me is about spending time with my entire family. With a new baby, I look forward to the

delight on his face when he sees all the wrapping paper and tries to understand the madness that is going on around him. I always look forward to delicious food and the casual relaxed time with grandparents, parents, siblings and extended family as we bask in the (hopefully) sunshine and exchange gifts chosen with love and thoughtfulness. ↘ I’m in awe of some of the deliciousness that you create on your blog ‘Bubbalino Kitchen’, tell me... have you decided what will be on the Christmas menu this year? To be honest I haven’t started thinking about a menu for Christmas just yet. Last year I was on dessert which is truthfully always my favourite to prepare, but being heavily pregnant I did miss being involved in the entire menu planning process. We usually do a ‘bring a plate’ scenario with my family so everyone brings a pre-organised dish and we all dig in. There is always waaaaay too much food, but it’s all so good that we just eat

HAZED 2015 CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE
until we are about to pop! We usually always have a salmon and a chicken and sometimes ham, but never turkey or lamb. I would like to try a new Salmon recipe this year. As well as some amazing new salads. ↘ Do you have any recipes that we should add to our Christmas menus? I can highly recommend the dessert I made last year which is on my blog – Soft Pavlova Roll with Liqueur Mascarpone and Berry Compote. It is a show stopper visually and although it looks complicated, it is really very straight forward to make. ↘ Where to next for Bubbalino? I am about to launch a new website which I’ve been working hard on and am super excited about. I am slowly getting my mojo back after being a bit swept up in the whirlwind of newborn-baby-land and am looking forward to a successful year. _ Interview by Hazel Schreiner

REAL WORLD SHOPPING
THE STORY C O L L EC T I V E
18
Story begun at a sit-down meeting of like-minded, small business owners at Michelle’s (Limited Vintage) dinner table in Hamilton. From there a group of six businesses owners decided that they had the time and drive to bring the vision into fruition, and so signed on to become the Story Collective. A few months later Story opened its doors and Chapter One commenced.
The great thing about the New Zealand Made community in Hamilton is that it is especially supportive and inclusive. The Story Collective came together from relationships built at markets and events around the city. Some of the women in the collective knew each other before Story, and for some the meeting at Michelle’s house was their first interaction with others in the group.
↘ You have a core group who help with the bills, staffing and events in store, who are they? How did these women come to be involved? The Story Collective is; Michelle Bailey of Limited Vintage; Angela Thompson of Kids & Curiosities; Runu Simpson of Runu Simpson Jewellery; Jillian Gantley & Angela Thompson of Jill & Ange; and Mallory Allen of Mallory Xavier.
↘ The team has recently launched phase two of Story, what do you think people will be most excited to find in store this time around? Story Chapter Two is opening just in time for Christmas shopping. This chapter Story has more businesses involved, more stunning New Zealand made product, and more workshops. We have been working on making Story a dynamic

“... we are all really grateful to have each other to lean on and bounce ideas off. ” and beautiful/exciting place to visit, and we have been working on making our social media presence more cohesive and informative. We have stock for men, women and children ranging from precious gifts to stocking stuffers. We even have Christmas decorations for a truly NZ made Christmas. ↘ So far of the Story journey what is the most surprising thing you have learnt? It has been a lot of fun learning about the ins and outs of running a retail store. I think the most surprising thing for all of us was how much time we would end up putting in to Story. It’s a tricky balance with all of us now running two businesses, and so we are all really
grateful to have each other to lean on and bounce ideas off. ↘ In the lead up to Christmas you have some exciting events, can you tell us a little more about these? We have special workshops in the lead up to Christmas that include making Christmas decorations and gifts. We will have workshops available for both children and adults. We will also be having a Christmas tree in store where gifts can be left to be donated to those experiencing hardship this year. November 22nd will mark Hamilton’s birthday and Story will be involved in the city celebrations. As well as that we will be celebrating local talent by supporting NZ's hidden talent HAZED

hosting ‘visiting artists’ each week, where local artists will display their work in Story and have an opportunity to book a ‘meet and greet’ time with their audience. ↘ Why do you think people are embracing the ‘shop local’ ethos this Christmas? We do see more and more people promoting shopping local and we think it’s great! The community spirit of NZ means that a lot of people know someone who owns/operates a small business, and shopping local means that they are supporting their friends or neighbours. Shopping locally often means you are getting something unique and of high quality, and often more personal. If people are after locally made, unique and beautiful gifts, Story is definitely the place to visit. ↘ Is there a chapter three? We have not yet discussed Chapter three, but Story definitely fills a niche in Hamilton City. I guess all we can say right now is watch this space. _ Interviewed by Hazel Schreiner FOLLOW ON FACEBOOK: FACEBOOK.COM/OURSTORYNZ VISIT THE STORE: 120 ALEXANDRA ST, HAMILTON FLICK AN EMAIL TO: OURSTORYNZ@GMAIL.COM

SUMMER LOVING
THE SUMMER C H R I ST M A S C O Self-described ideas person, Mela Greenslade is the entrepreneur behind The Summer Christmas Company, a Wellington-based business that produces non-traditional and unique Christmas decorations, all manufactured in Wellington. Mela explains that the concept was driven by a lack of decorations that embrace a typical summer Christmas. Accustomed to winter Christmases from her own childhood living in the UK, Mela recognized that the summer Christmas needed to be celebrated differently. She states “I couldn’t see many New Zealand-flavoured and distinctly summer Christmas decorations in stores and it concerned me that most things were made in China”.
26
HAZED 2015 CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE
Mela conceptualised the designs and has created a number of products featuring stylised native New Zealand flora and fauna. All of her decorations are designed with simplicity in mind. “I have a preference for simplified decorations and not a lot of fuss and frills on things. At around the time that my youngest child started kindy, I sat down and worked out imagery that reflected New Zealand and summer and tried to distill those into strong, simplified shapes” she explains. Her first design idea was plywood trees manufactured in three different sizes to cater for all budgets and spaces, in particular the summer bach. They are quick to assemble and can be stored flat when not in use.

“There are better alternatives to a fir tree and tinsel... It’s also important to me that the decorations are made ethically, particularly at Christmas time. ”

The Summer Christmas Company launched late last year initially at local fairs. Mela recalls “I had such positive feedback on the wreaths because they are so striking and different”. These wreaths include stylised pohutukawa and starfish in scarlet acrylic or FSC certified ply. Her best-selling three-packs of Christmas decorations are also available in both ply and acrylic options. Lightweight and compact, these Christmas decorations make ideal gifts to send overseas, particularly to loved ones who may like a reminder of home. Mela is exploring establishing a blog centralising all of her ideas and inspiration to share and connect with others producing summer Christmas decorations globally. The Summer Christmas Company’s Pinterest boards already have lots of ideas for summer Christmas food and decorations, sourced from around the world. Her products will be available shortly on Felt and through Etsy. “There are better alternatives to a fir tree and tinsel for countries that have a summer Christmas. It’s also important to me that the decorations are made ethically, particularly at Christmas time” she adds. Look out for the Summer Christmas Company in a number of retail outlets nationwide this Christmas. _ Interviewed by Leanne McCarty

HAZED 2015 CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE
It’s a Tutti Frutti Christmas! Hand sew these felt fruity delights and wow your friends and family with your tropical decorating + wrapping skills. Use your fruits individually as gift tags, wrapping embellishments and hanging decorations or s tring together to make a fruit salad garland. ↘ What you will need * Felt: Light+Dark Green, Light + Dark Red, Yellow + Brown * Embroidery Floss: Light + Dark Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, White + Brown * Scissors, pins, embroidery needle * Light card, glue * Ribbon for making garland * Fading fabric marker (optional)
stitch the detail on the pineapple using the design on the pattern piece as a guide. I drew mine on with a fading fabric marker first and then stitched over the top. Lay the pieces out so the front and back are mirror images. With right sides up lay the leaf pieces so they slightly overlap the yellow pieces and whip stitch in place along the bottom of the leaf using 1 strand of dark green floss. Pin the front and back pieces wrong sides together and using 1 strand of dark green floss blanket stitch around the outside of the leaf. Using 1 x strand of yellow floss blanket stitch around the outside of the pineapple.
↘ Let’s get started! You can download the full size fruit patterns from Hazed. Print to A4 plain paper, glue to light card and cut out each piece on the dotted lines. Lay your pieces onto the appropriate colour felt, hold in place and cut around. A handy tip is to use clothes pegs to hold the cardboard on to the felt while you cut. ↘ Let’s get sewing! There is a handy Stitch Guide on the cupcake cutie blog if you need it. ↘ Pineapple Using 2 strands of yellow floss back stitch the detail on the front leaf piece (in the photo I have stitched both sides of the leaf). ↘ Strawberry Using 2 strands of light green floss back stitch the detail on the green top. Using 2 strands of yellow floss add the seed detail to the strawberry using random straight stitches as shown on the pattern piece. Lay the pieces out so the front and back are mirror images. Place the green tops as shown, pin and whip stitch in place along the bottom using 1 x strand of light green floss. Pin the front and back pieces wrong sides together and using 1 strand of light green floss blanket stitch around the outside of the green top. Using 1 strand of red floss blanket stitch around the outside of the strawberry.

↘ Cherries Lay the cherry pieces out so they are mirror images. Using 1 strand of light green floss whip stitch the point of the leaf onto the top of the brown stalk. Repeat on other piece. Using 2 strands of white floss add the reflection detail to both cherries using back stitch as shown on the pattern piece. Using 2 strands of red floss use split stitch to add the outline of the first cherry. Using 1 strand of red floss whip stitch the top of the cherries onto the stalks. Repeat on the other side. Pin front and back pieces wrong sides together and using 1 strand of light green floss blanket stitch around the leaf. Using 1 strand of brown floss blanket stitch around the stalk. Remember to stitch around the inside of the stalk too. Using 1 strand of red floss blanket stitch around the cherries.
↘ Watermelon Lay the black seeds out on the red piece as shown and whip stitch in place using 1 strand of black floss. Lay the white piece onto a green piece, pin and whip stitch in place using 1 strand of white floss around the semi circle only. Pin the red piece to the white and whip stitch in place using 1 strand of red floss around the semi circle only. Pin the front piece to the remaining green piece and blanket stitch around the entire outside using 1 strand of dark green floss. NB: If you would like to add a bit of stuffing or a hanging loop to any of your fruits do so in the final step. _

UPCYCLING FUN
DOILY N EC K L AC E I’ve often told you of my love of doilies. Olde Worlde hand crocheted gracefulness. I was lucky enough to find, on a bright Spring day, a square tatted doily in my local op shop. In the early 20th century, it would have held the utilitarian role of protecting fine wood furniture from scratches caused by crockery or decorative objects. In my more modern, 21st century home, I decided to put them to another use entirely, and make some gorgeous necklaces for myself, and to gift to friends. Today, I show you how! You will need : * Doilies, relevant to shape and size of your finished product. * Stiffy, a fabric stiffening agent that, to be fair, I purchased 20 years ago, and which by now might be rebranded to something less giggle enhancing! * A flat plastic container * A necklace chain of your choosing. I used one of my existing chains, and I just swap between my pendants depending on what I am wearing.
46
HAZED 2015 CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE
↘ STEP ONE Cut out your desired design from your bigger doily piece. For my square piece in the photo, it was an easy choose because I particularly fancied a diamond shaped, larger pendant. The smaller daisy circle in the finished product photo, was cut from a larger doily, which I wear on my ‘not so bold’ days. ↘ STEP TWO Place your doily pendant pieces into the container, and fill with your fabric stiffener until they are generously covered. ↘ STEP THREE Remove your doily pendant pieces and place them on a flat surface to dry. I left mine overnight. ↘ STEP FOUR Loop your chosen chain through your stiffened doily piece and marvel at your jewellery making talents – it’s that easy! Enjoy your Christmas crafting. And remember, when you craft, create and gift, it truly comes from a place of thinking, purposefulness, and giving. Handmade. It’s where it’s at. _ Created by Kirstee Griffiths CRAFT WITH KIRSTEE: FACEBOOK.COM/HIBISCUSNZ

BAKE WITH ANARASHII
CHRISTMAS FUDGE
INGREDIENTS 200gms Butter 1 ½ cups of Icing Sugar 4 heaped teaspoons of Cocoa 150gms of Sour Cream or thick Natural Yoghurt 1 can of Condensed Milk 1 block of Whittakers Dark (or Dark Ghana if you’re after something darker) 7 Arnotts’ Mint Slice biscuits – broken up 1 teaspoon of Imitation Vanilla Essence UTENSILS Heat proof spatulas/scrapers Heat proof Microwave safe bowl Slice tray Electric mixer Oil spray Paper towels REALLY, really good oven mitts Measuring equipment
54
HAZED 2015 CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE
METHOD ↘ Put butter, icing sugar, cocoa, sour cream/yoghurt, and condensed milk in microwave safe bowl. Place in microwave and heat on high in five 3 minute bursts, removing from the microwave and beating the mixture with the electric beater for approximately 1 minute in between bursts ( I keep track of how many times I’ve heated the mixture for on my white board). Check the strength of your microwave and watch your fudge mixture like a kea watches shiny stuff or you’ll have fudge overflowing everywhere. My microwave is completely munted so I am able to heat my fudge mixture in five 3 minute bursts without so much as a burst bubble, but more than likely your microwave will not be so weak – you have been warned! So just remember you want to heat the mixture for a total of 15 minutes on high with 1 minute of beating with your electric mixer for every 3 minutes of microwave bursts.
↘ Beat for about a minute with your electric mixer for the last time. Make sure you have your slice tray pre-greased (spray with oil spray, spread oil-spray evenly-ish with a paper towel) and your heat proof spatula ready to scrape all that delicious fudge goodness out of the bowl and into the tray. Also make sure to have a seriously trusted pair of oven mitts ready so that you don’t permanently maim yourself from boiling hot choc fudge burns! Finished beating?
↘ After you have finished heating your fudge mixture in the microwave for the last time add 1 tsp vanilla, break up the block of Whittakers’ Dark Block into individual pieces and add all of it (you could possibly get away with eating 1 or 2 pieces without it affecting the integrity of the fudge, possibly) and then break up 7 mint slice bikkies and chuck them in too! (more if you feel like it).
↘ Place your fudge somewhere to cool and enjoy the heck out of it once it has! Think it needs some adding to its festive look? Go on then, crush some peppermint candy canes and sprinkle them over the top. _
↘ Remove the mixer – place it in a jug or small bowl ready for eating, er, cleaning the fudge off once it has cooled. Don your trusty mitts move a chopping board under your slice tray cos it’s gonna get hot! Pick up the very hot glass bowl very carefully, using the mitts somehow balance it against your body without getting any hot fudge on yourself and use your free hand (what free hand?!?) to quickly and efficiently scrape all the piping hot fudge into the slice tray.
