CURATORS NOTE

CURATORS NOTE IRINA RUSINOVICH, CURATOR

Roland Barthes, in his essays, draws our attention on how photography, by capturing the accidental, turning it into the eternal, makes it alive, and our meeting with the accidental - an adventure. In the work of a photographer, many casual encounters with the “inanimate - a fragment of a city, a separate object, nature - also lead to adventure, to the appearance, ultimately, of an animated object - a building.

I was born in 1971 and live in Hannover, a city with 500.000 citizens in Germany.

18

My first contact with street photography was on my travels in the 90’s when I even don’t know anything about this genre. Since 2016 I have been concentrating exclusively on street and minimal photography. Since I am blind on the left side since birth and have only 25% vision on the other eye, I am rather a slow photographer. Composing a stage and waiting for the decisive moment is my favourite way to work. I can be very patient. Sometimes I’m kneeling on the floor for 15 minutes, when I think it’s worth it. Mostly a clean and eyecatching composition is important for me. I love to work with light, colors, reflections, and forms of the city landscapes in relation to the human being. And if the shot is not only well composed but also tells a story or conveys an emotion, I’m happy with it.. 19

She works in different fields of photography, but her passion is portrait and film photography. Anya Kholina was born in 1987 in Moscow, Russia, her first education was in jurisprudence, but art always had a big role in her life and already in the process of education, she realised that she is not interested in the future of a lawyer. So after graduating from law school she entered graphic design course in the British Higher School of art & design in Moscow. During design education photography was always integrated into her works. ‘I remember myself back in school, when I asked my parents to give me their film camera and took pictures of my friends, so I can say that I’ve been shooting for more than 15 years’, she said. She studied a year on the course of photography and video art at the same school. 4 years ago she quit the design studio she worked at because she realised that the office way of life made her deeply upset and began her career as a freelancer. 46
