CURATORS NOTE
CURATORS NOTE IREN RUSSO, CURATOR
Collage describes both the technique and the resulting work of art in which pieces of paper, photographs, fabric and other ephemera are arranged and stuck down onto a supporting surface. The first artist to work exclusively in collage technique was Kurt Schwitters, who continues the traditions of the Surrealists and Dadaists. He expanded the scope of materials and objects used for collage. His small, but very sophisticated compositional works consisted of pieces of paper, bus tickets, labels, coupons. In about 1912–13 Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque extended this technique, combining fragments of paper, wood, linoleum, and newspapers with oil paint on canvas to form subtle and interesting abstract or semiabstract compositions. The development of the collage by Picasso and Braque contributed largely to the transition from Analytical to Synthetic Cubism.

Jolien De Nijs @cinemajolia
Mnemosyne 2.3 148 x 210 mm €220
Jolien De Nijs (°1994) analyses the self, to better distinguish the barrier between the real and the fake. She tries to visualize past experiences projected into her direct surroundings. Memories that adapt themselves to their new environment and merge with the present. They influence the perception of an individual throughout its existence. In De Nijs’ practice, creation functions as a tool to deduce different fabrications of the mind. It consequently tries to undermine the distrust in a true recollection of the past. This extensive search for the embodiment of mental spaces, spaces that are often repressed, places memories with their specific appearances on the precise moment of creation into the tangible. Highly conscious about her actions, the artist meticulously manipulates her own future. Parallel to this continuous confusion regarding the real she provokes the notion of normal. 7

DorothĂŠe Zombronner @trashisdada
Collage-technique is my prefered medium at the moment. I use or quote picutres of (mostly western) art-history and contemporary art, join them together in a new, ironic context. A central issue in my works is a critical discussion of normative beauty and the questioning of assigned visual habits. I am also interested in feminism and politics in general.

Tatsiana Yukhnavets @ta.yu.art
I am Tatsiana Yukhnavets. Born in 1975 in Vladivostok. Nationality - Belarusian. I have been living in Bern, Switzerland, since 2002. Author. I write essays, biographies, stories. I am the mother of a 22 year old daughter. The most important thing for me in life is to achieve my own goals and not be afraid of dreams. I like to live in the present, but I am very excited to see what will happen in the future. I write stories. Even with collages. Creating collages is an artistic side of my life. By art I mean creating something new, something inexplicable, emotional. It doesn’t matter if it’s a picture or a story, a sculpture or the creation of collages. Before I develop something new, I put myself in a dream or a fantasy. The line between reality and fantasy disappears. In such cases, I immerse myself in my experiences, prejudices, beliefs and expectations. This is how the images emerge in my mind, which I realize through this process. 16

My photograph is an essential photograph. I need to look inside. I look outside but I represent myself. Your photograph cannot be my photograph. My photograph is painful. Before taking it, I must have cried. I must have struggled and fought against my inner demons. My photograph is like the moment of battle for a samurai. You prepare for that event all your life, every day, even if you hope it never happens. My journey in the art practice has developed by itself along with my studies. After my diploma, (at the high school of cultural heritage of Reggio Emilia) where I had the opportunity to discover a scientific approach to the Art, I have attended the University of Design and Communication of Reggio Emilia.

Darya Sklyarenko @daryasklyarenko
I started art at the age of 25 after I worked as an advertising and printing designer for 10 years and received a liberal arts education (cultural science). For six years of artistic activity I took part in three collective exhibitions and received a second education (professional art). In order to study the technology of oil painting, which I work with for the most part, I received a bachelor’s degree in oil painting restoration from the Stieglitz St. Petersburg Academy of Art and Design. Art for me is a kind of creative activity, in which I can combine an interest in humanitarian studies, working with visual images, and creating tangible objects. Currently, I live in St. Petersburg and work on a series of paintings and collages on the theme of Asia, which will be united by the search for a portrait colour of Asia (more precisely, Kazakhstan, where I was born) and a way to create space that would represent my personal sense of Asian spirit.

In “MOI MOI - MON TOI” the artist SEMRA SEVIN uses transparencies, reflections, mirrors and trompe l’oeils to send the viewer onto a visual journey to understand “the other” in our surroundings and within us. SEVIN’s creative language thus opens up a diverse, multifaceted world in which we interact with reflective and transparent surfaces, whereby the environment reflected in the artworks becomes part of the artistic installation. Since 2018, the presentation of SEVIN’s artistic works has evolved from two-dimensional fine art prints to a multi-layered presentations, working with mirrors, reflections, light sources, transparencies, layers, collages and trompe l’oeils. Crossing Identities Kazimierz, 2018 40x40
In her 18-month trilateral interview -and photo-series between Berlin, Paris and Los Angeles, the artist SEVIN explores how empathy for “the other” can be developed.

Mona Sultan @monasultan
I was raised in Damascus, Syria, I studied Graphic Design in Beirut and moved to Canada in 2008. I have worked in film and fashion, running my eponymous accessory line for 8 years and today I freelance as an art director and collage artist. My aesthetic is rooted in my multi-disciplinary background and my approach to collage is inspired by Dadaism and Surrealism. My work mainly explores the idea of accidental harmony and spontaneity while experimenting with techniques such as trompe l’oeil, photomontage and Étrécissements. And while I enjoy collage as a self-expressive art form, I also use the medium alongside art direction when working with brands to create unique artwork for campaigns and product promotion. I was first introduced to collage as a young teenager in the 90’s, spending afternoons sifting through pages of French Elle, which I would eventually take apart and collage on my bedroom walls as well as surfaces such as cardboard and cigar boxes.

Jooeun Bae @jooeunbae
Jooeun Bae is an emerging photographer that works with a collage medium. She was born in South Korea, and at the age of 15, she moved to the United States independently to study for a decade. There were many new cultures for her, but they melted into her without a sense of difference. Therefore, she was able to form a sense of herself that harmonized Korean, her human nature, and the American culture in her. As her adolescence, she was fascinated with the idea of making one by mixing different elements. Thus, collage is an essential method that allows her to put her imagination together. For the reasons, she has chosen to be a collage-photographer, among many other specialties in photography. Jooeun Bae is a graduate of International Center of Photography in Manhattan, New York. Right after the graduate show at ICP, she was invited by SFA Projects to exhibit her works for the 917 INT’L group show in NYC and got featured in Musee Magazine. Also, she presented her works in Cologne, Germany, as public art.

Yar Kirsanov is a collage artist, illustrator, and graphic designer from Russia. He was born in 1984 in Saratov, a small russian town on the Volga river. He still lives there working with brands and individuals from all over the world. He is an active member of Russian Collage community, participating in local and international collage initiatives. STATEMENT Working in digital and mixed media, I refer to the archetypal images of the Unconscious. I love the idea that human culture is woven from eternal symbols, and our mind is the tower of ancient gods and heroes: this adds poetry to our existence. The strikingly powerful imagery lives inside us, so my task is to awaken it with my visual stories. Restrained, monochrome gamma cleans imagery of superfluous, redundant details and meanings, allowing the viewer to focus on his/her feelings. Multi-layered, fragmented imagery of my collage works reflects my vision of subjective reality. 106
