f o s r e d n o WHAZELDEAN VALLEY ENJOY THE

With ever increasing urbanisation there is a great need for an escape to the countryside and a sense of space. Hazeldean Valley provides this escape without having to leave Pretoria. It is part of the farm that was once home to South Africa’s biggest herd of Ayrshire cows: the herd that founded the Woolworths Ayrshire brand of delicious dairy products in 1988.

T

he historic old farm buildings dating back to the 1940s provide the perfect setting for what promises to be a place where people can enjoy some time out. Hazeldean Valley is now home to the Cowhouse Market, situated in the shed that used to house 640 top producing dairy cows. The whole family can enjoy a day out riding the mountain bike trails or just walking the dogs and enjoying some time out with friends. Hazeldean Brewing Company will soon be set up in one of the old barns and other venues are also planned. For more information, visit www. hazeldeanvalley.co.za. 12

HAZELDEAN VALLEY TRAILS

The Hazeldean Valley Mountain Biking and Trail Running Trails are ideally situated within riding distance from Silver Lakes and surrounds. The trails are designed so that everyone can enjoy them from beginner to advanced rider level. There are 36km of well-designed single track to be enjoyed following the recent expansion allowing for different distances to choose from. Further extensions and additions to the trails are in progress. Parking and ticketing is at the Cowhouse from where you can follow the coloured arrows to the trails. There is also a free kiddies bike park

at the Cowhouse. The trails also provide a perfect venue for various events. Follow the Hazeldean Valley Trails Facebook page to keep up to date.

THE COWHOUSE MARKET

The Cowhouse Market was founded by James Waugh, William Waugh and Louis Venter, inspired by a passion for food and good times. After working as market traders in the Western Cape, they realised there was a need for a different type of market concept in Pretoria that would cater for the needs of families: the need to break away from the hustle and bustle

hazeldean exclusives

of city life without having to drive too far. The market provides gourmet market food, beverages, crafts, a safe kid’s play area, live entertainment and more. Entry is free. Trading hours are every Saturday and Sunday from 10h00 to 16h00 and there is also a night market every last Saturday of the month. For more information, follow the Cowhouse Market on Facebook or visit www.cowhousemarket.co.za.

HAZELDEAN BREWING COMPANY

A cool favourite at the Cowhouse Market is craft beer by Hazeldean Brewing Co. Inspired by the heritage of the farm, Hazeldean Valley’s resident brewery will soon be set up in the classic old barn dating back to the 1940s. Marius, the founder and owner, has been brewing beer at home since starting as a hobbyist brewing 20 litre batches in his garage to enjoy with friends and family. When he

got the opportunity to sell his beer at the Cowhouse Market he left his engineering job to pursue his dream of brewing on a larger scale. Hazeldean Brewing Co. has a range of beers to choose from including the very popular Vienna Lager, Premium Pilsner, Amber Weissbeer and Milkstout. They also feature a beer from a local guest brewer every month to help grow the craft beer industry and to provide a marketing platform for those breweries. For marketgoers who aren’t keen on beer, there is a Rooibos Wooded Cider from Windermere or the popular Hazeldean Radler Shandy: a refreshing mix of Marius’s Pilsner and his wife Evelyn’s homemade lemonade. When the brewery is complete it will include a taste room where visitors can learn all about the brewing process. C

onstruction has commenced on Loftus Park directly adjacent to the legendary Loftus Versfeld Stadium with Abland as the developer in collaboration with the Bull Bulls. The main contractor already has no fewer than five tower cranes on site. Abland’s Project Manager, Hannes Kleynhans explains that this R1.45 billion project has achieved its’ first milestone: “The bulk earth works included the removal of 270 000 cubic meters of soil, or 33 800 truckloads, that was completed in 8 months. The residents and schools in the vicinity have been accommodated with regards to traffic and we worked more night than day shifts to minimise the number of trucks on the road during peak hour.” Kleynhans also put the size of the project into perspective: “Abland will be using 5 200 tons of steel (that is equal to half of that used for construction of the Eiffel tower), 16

46 000 cubic meters of concrete and no less than 2.2 million bricks”. This dynamic mixed use development comprises Premium grade office space, select retail, five restaurants, a 3500 m² gymnasium with pool, a hotel and Sport Rehabilitation Centre of Excellence where top medical specialists will focus on the treatment of sport injuries. The buildings are designed around a central piazza with recreational and entertainment space where the public will enjoy an exceptional atmosphere. The office buildings are designed to include green initiatives that will afford a saving of up to R10/m² for tenants with regards to utilities. Tenants are already signing leases to secure their place in the park and their quota of the 2200 parking bays. Enquiries can be directed to Abland via the website; www.abland.co.za.

SOAKING

YOURSELF HAPPY There is nothing quite like taking a long leisurely soak in a hot bath. They are soothing, relaxing and offer an almost meditative reprieve from the stresses and strains of the outside world. Bathroom Bizarre offers endless bath options – including spa baths, classic balland-claw tubs, freestanding, corner and many more. This proves that buying a bath is no longer a simple decision, and because a bath can be a permanent and expensive purchase, it is very important to do a little research before making your purchase decision. The type of bath you choose should not just be a decision made purely on aesthetics, but also on how you will use the tub. It is essential to be practical as well – will small kids or elderly members of the family be using it, what kind of space do you have in your bathroom, and do you like to take long, leisurely baths? For more information and the answers to these questions, visit your nearest Bathroom Bizarre branch.

BIO-IDENTICAL

HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY Getting the balance right

Our bodies are made up of many different hormones, each performing their own intricate physiological functions, while also working together in delicate harmony. Unfortunately, due to factors such as stress, illness, our environment, poor lifestyle choices including unbalanced diets and lack of exercise, as well as the natural aging process, the production of these hormones declines significantly post menopause.

T

he decline in hormonal levels can lead to debilitating symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, memory loss, insomnia, decreased libido, thinning skin and hair loss, which further leads to loss of confidence and emotional distress. Dr. Burt Jooste, aesthetic and functional medical practitioner at Health Renewal says: “Our daily environment exposes us to toxic chemicals, ongoing stress, poor nutritional content in foods, antibiotic and hormone contamination in meat, estrogenlike chemicals in plastics and cosmetics, which all have ongoing negative effects on our hormone balances. These inevitably lead to health problems, but fortunately we now have the tools to manage these issues with correct hormonal balancing”. There is however a big emphasis on the word ‘correct’ as conventional methods of hormone replacement treatments (HRT) have been used on patients for a long time, but due to the fact that these hormones are sourced from animals, which have a different molecular structure to humans, they are not effectively absorbed and metabolised into the system, and can increase the potential of breast and ovarian cancer.

Thankfully, the days of women relying only on potent and foreign molecules to treat menopause are over. There is a wide range of bio-identical hormones to choose from to maintain optimum health. Bio-identical hormones differ from conventional HRT as the base hormones are extracted from botanical sources such as the yam and soya plants. These molecules are then manipulated and chemically rebuilt in a laboratory to produce identical copies of human hormones. These hormone powders are then compounded in the form of capsules and creams for easy application, or as pellets, which are inserted under the patient’s skin and allows for continued, slow release of the hormones over a period of three to six months. Once these molecules are metabolised and broken down by the body, they are fully absorbed, recognised and function as nature intended. Traditionally, hormonal imbalance treatments have primarily focused on women, but men also experience hormonal decline from the age of 40. In men, it leads to reduced energy, memory loss, depression, loss of libido, erectile dysfunction and loss of muscle mass, to name a few.

Hormonal balancing starts with a consultation with a functional or integrative medical doctor. A hormonal balancing plan is only designed after an in-depth medical examination which includes a detailed medical history interview aimed to highlight specific hormone deficiency symptoms as well as very specific blood tests. The plan also includes advice on lifestyle habits, correct nutritional supplementation and diet information. Bio-identical hormone creams are often used in the initial phases, as the cream allows for easier dose adjustments, which are sometimes necessary at the beginning. Once the doctor is satisfied with the blood levels, patients may be switched over to hormone pellets, which are inserted beneath the skin, in a minor procedure performed in the doctor's rooms. These pellets provide a steady release of bioidentical hormones to the patient for a period of between three to six months. Hormone imbalances can also affect women at a much younger age. They may have problems such as endometriosis, heavy and painful menstruation and severe PMS. In this instance, bio-identical hormones are used as a “supplementation” to assist the body to balance these levels. Although bio-identical hormone replacement has been a popular choice in the United States and Europe since the 1990's, it is currently gaining support in South Africa from both doctors and patients alike. Should you be interested in finding out more about bio-identical hormone replacement therapies visit www. healthrenewal.co.za, or if you’d like to make an appointment with an integrative doctor, contact Health Renewal on 086 126 3972 to book your individual assessment.

SPRING Clean

YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE

Using the changing of the seasons is a good way to help you keep your training regime fresh and different, and not allowing yourself to fall into a rut. Keeping your workouts new and exciting prevents you from losing interest and helps you stick to your goals. Updating your workout isn’t the only way to keep yourself excited about exercising, here are a few more ways to spring clean your fitness routine. BE PREPARED

Get ready to reach your goals by setting up a new workout schedule. Be realistic though. If you’ve barely gone outside all winter, don’t say that you’ll go running for half an hour six days a week. Challenge yourself but don’t risk an injury by overdoing it. Listen to your body and gradually increase resistance and time along with your ability. You can also keep your new workouts fun by spring cleaning your iPod. Delete those tracks that you’ve been listening to since February and find a fresh new playlist to keep you going. Book a physical before you begin your new workout routine, even if you feel fine it is important to keep tabs on blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. Your health should always be your number one concern!

LOOK THE PART

Now that it’s warmer outside, you don’t have to layer up as much. Put those warm winter clothes away and replace them with shorts, leggings, tanks and t-shirts in breathable fabrics. For the women, now is also a good time to buy new sports bras. The typical lifespan of a bra is about 6 months and you don’t want to compromise your breasts by working out in bras that don’t support you the right way anymore. Splurge on some good quality running shoes too. Normal wear and tear can affect the fit and you put your legs and feet at risk of injury if you are not running with adequate support. Have your new shoes fitted by a professional at a running specialty store to get the best fit for your feet. 28

PLAY WITH FRIENDS

Break your routine with some fun outdoor activities like golf or tennis, or organize a Saturday afternoon playing Frisbee with friends. Even if you just throw a ball around, anything that gets your heart going is good. Working out with a friend is a good way to stay motivated, you’re more likely to stick to it if you are relying on someone and know they are relying on you. Find a friend whose schedule fits yours and try get together a couple of times a week. You will have more fun and it’s an excuse to spend more time with a good friend.

CLEAN AWAY THOSE CALORIES

Vigorous cleaning can be as effective as a workout in the gym. Dusting, vacuuming and polishing can burn up to 350 calories an hour. Not only is it good exercise, cleaning is a very rewarding activity and can feel just as good as a workout. Being in a more organized environment can help you make healthier choices. A study found that people who worked in a neat space for ten minutes were twice as likely to choose an apple over a chocolate compared to those who worked in a messy office for the same amount of time. Don’t forget to clean out the pantry while you’re busy and throw out all the foods with little nutritional value such as chips, sugary treats, breads and instant noodles.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT YOU

Life is stressful. Between work and family and personal commitments, it’s so easy to get lost in the rush of things. You can’t pour from an empty cup and you won’t be able to give your best at work, home or in the gym if you’re burning yourself out. Take some time out for yourself, try spending time with a friend, go shopping or even watch a movie or read a book. Reward yourself when you reach goals you have set, but try not to reward yourself with food. Buy a new pair of jeans in a smaller size, enjoy a spa day or relax in a hot bubble bath instead, anything that makes you feel good. Spoiling yourself a little bit will keep you feeling rejuvenated and motivated and ready to take on the world again. 2016 • Hazeldean times • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

BREAST CANCER eness Month Awar

Big or small, high or low – no matter what your breasts look like, celebrate them this October by observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month and making sure you get your breasts checked. Breast cancer is the one of the most common cancers in women, with an average of one in eight women affected by the disease in their lifetime. Breast cancer also affects one in every 1000 men.

2016 • Hazeldean times • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

31

hazeldean lifestyle

O

ne of the most significant factors in determining how successful breast cancer treatment will be is early detection. If the cancer can be caught before it has begun to spread, you will have a much higher chance of a full recovery. The first step to early detection is performing a selfexamination of your breasts. All women from teenager to post-menopausal should be giving themselves a breast exam at least once a month. It takes about a minute for each breast and these two minutes can literally save your life.

THERE ARE 3 STEPS TO A BREAST SELF-EXAM:

Standing up, use the pads of your fingers to feel your breast. Move around the breast in a circular pattern from the outside towards the nipple. Check the entire breast and armpit area for any lump, thickening,

01 32

hardening or knot. Visually inspect your breasts in the mirror. Hold your arms at your sides and then raise them high over your head. Look for any changes in contour, any kind of swelling, dimpling of the skin or changes in the nipples.

02 03

Lie down and place a pillow under your right shoulder and put your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, feel around the breast with varying pressure. Look for any lumps or abnormalities. Squeeze the nipple and check for any discharge or lumps. Repeat with your left breast. If you notice anything abnormal during a breast exam, make an appointment with a healthcare professional as soon as possible. You should also get checked out if you notice: • A change in how the breast or

2016 • Hazeldean times • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

nipple feels. Any kind of unexplained tenderness, enlargement of the pores or dimpling is cause for concern. • A change in breast or nipple appearance. An unexplained change in size (swelling or shrinking) especially if only on one side, any recent asymmetry of the breasts or if the skin becomes red, scaly or sore will need to be checked out. • Any nipple discharge – particularly clear or bloody discharge is not normal and needs to be examined by a doctor. If you experience a milky discharge when you are not breastfeeding, you should also be checked by a doctor although this is not usually linked to breast cancer. More often than not, these symptoms do not mean you have breast cancer but it is important to have any breast cancer symptoms addressed and treated immediately to prevent the situation from worsening. There are times that even if a woman does not show any symptoms,

hazeldean lifestyle

MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, THESE SYMPTOMS DO NOT MEAN YOU HAVE BREAST CANCER BUT IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE ANY BREAST CANCER SYMPTOMS ADDRESSED AND TREATED IMMEDIATELY TO PREVENT THE SITUATION FROM WORSENING. THERE ARE TIMES THAT EVEN IF A WOMAN DOES NOT SHOW ANY SYMPTOMS, HER DOCTOR WILL ORDER FURTHER TESTS BASED ON FAMILY HISTORY AND PERSONAL MEDICAL HISTORY.

her doctor will order further tests based on family history and personal medical history. When a person has been diagnosed with breast cancer, their healthcare team will establish a stage of the cancer to communicate how far the disease has progressed. The staging is based on the size of the tumour in the breast, the number of lymph nodes affected and signs indicating whether or not the cancer has invaded other organs in the body. Stage 0 and 1 represent the earliest detection of breast cancer, at these stages the cancer cells are confined to a very limited area. At Stage 2 and 2A, the cancer is still in the very early stages but there is evidence that it has begun to grow or spread but is still contained in the breast area and is generally effectively treated. Stage 3 A, B and C mean the cancer is relatively advanced with evidence of cancer surrounding the tissues near the breast and Stage 4 indicates that the cancer has spread beyond the breast to other areas of the body. If you are diagnosed with breast cancer and the stage has been determined, treatment options can then be discussed. One of the most important decisions a patient can make is finding the right doctor. You have to feel comfortable with your 33

doctor and be able ask all the questions you need to. Breast cancer treatments are evolving all the time and your doctor may discuss standard treatments as well as clinical trials with you. Be sure to understand everything and be informed enough to make the right decision. There are a few different treatment options available today including:

SURGERY:

Surgery is the most common form of treatment for breast cancer and this involves removing the tumour from the breast. Surgical options may include a lumpectomy, partial mastectomy, radical mastectomy and reconstruction.

CHEMOTHERAPY:

This is a common form of treatment for most types of cancers that uses a combination of drugs to destroy or inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

RADIATION:

Also called radiotherapy, this treatment uses high energy rays to kill the cancer cells. It can affect the nearby skin and only affects the part of the body that is treated with radiation.

2016 • Hazeldean times • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

HORMONE THERAPY:

If the cancer cells have hormone receptors, hormone therapy drugs such as blockers or inhibitors can be used to destroy the cancer cells by cutting off their supply of hormones.

TARGETED THERAPY:

Targeted therapy uses drugs that block the growth of cancers in specific ways, often reducing side effects.

NUTRITION AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:

Taking care of yourself before, during and after breast cancer treatment is very important. Your body needs the strength and energy, and needs to be physically fit enough to handle whatever treatment option you decide on. Breast cancer is a scary ordeal for anyone to have to go through and can be tough on everyone around them too but it is treatable and it is possible to recover from it and live a normal and healthy life. Be informed and pass that information on during Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, you could end up saving a life.

ooking at too many things can overload your brain and can actually interfere with your brain’s ability to process information. Clutter is distracting and getting rid of it can help you concentrate better and increases your brain’s ability to make better decisions. Clearing and organizing your work area can help you be more efficient and more organized, which makes you look more professional and people will be more eager to work with you. You will also get your work done quickly and have more free time to spend with family, working out or taking a few minutes for yourself which you wouldn’t ordinarily have. Cleaning your living space can make you feel more restful and at peace, increase your ability to deal with stress better and can help you sleep. Stress affects sleep and sleep affects stress, it’s a vicious cycle. Being in a clean, organized room makes it easier to fall asleep and lets your brain shut down more quickly. When there is too much stuff around you, your brain is kept active and cannot rest. Keeping your bedroom neat will turn it into a peaceful sanctuary meant for sleep and rest. A study showed that people who made their bed every morning were 19% more likely to have a good night's sleep, and 75% of people admitted sleeping better in clean sheets because it is physically more comfortable. Becoming a more organized person will take a bit of effort but the benefits will be more than worth it. Being organized is simply forming a series of habits that, if you stick to them, will make your life so much easier.

hazeldean lifestyle

• A daily to do list – try not to include more than four or five items because if you try to expect too much of yourself, you will set yourself up for failure. • A weekly to do list – this list will include items such as grocery shopping, cleaning out the fridge, etc. Make sure the list is cleared before the end of the week and then make a new one for the next week. • A monthly to do list – this one will likely include more general errands such as servicing your car, buying birthday gifts, etc. Keep referencing your list throughout the month to make sure you are getting things done. • A Life to do list – a bit drastic? Maybe, but why not start to rethink where your life is going. Being organized is about priorities and maybe now is the time to take that step in the right direction.

FOLLOW THESE FIVE STEPS TO START LIVING A MORE ORGANIZED LIFE:

01

ORGANIZE YOUR SPACE

02

PUT THINGS AWAY

03

WRITE THAT DOWN

Organized doesn’t only mean tidy. The purpose of organization is to be able to find things quickly and easily and replace them when you are done. Keeping things organized can help to keep things tidy though, because it provides a logical space for everything. Go through your house room by room and clear out cupboards, drawers, anywhere that mess piles up. Sort through what you want to keep and get rid of anything you don’t use. Assign a clearly designated and convenient space for everything else.

04

FOLLOW THROUGH

05

DELEGATION IS KEY

There is no point in making a list if you don’t complete the tasks you have assigned yourself. Stop procrastinating, remove or ignore distractions, and get to it. If something keeps slipping to the bottom of your list or you just don’t get to it, ask yourself if it is really that important. If it is, do it and get it over with. If not, put it on a more long term list.

No one can do everything on their own without any help. Assign tasks to relevant people and let them take it off your plate. It is important for children to learn to do chores and learn responsibility and use this as a way to help stay on top of things.

Put it back – right now! Once you have decided where everything will go, get into the habit of replacing it as soon as you are done with it. Don’t just put it in the kitchen or out of your way and think you will do it later because chances are, you won’t. Do it immediately and you won’t have to worry about doing it later.

The biggest lie we tell ourselves is, “I don’t need to write that down, I will remember it.” You know you won’t so get into the habit of writing down what you need to do and feeling the satisfaction of crossing something off the list. The kinds of lists you can make are: 2016 • Hazeldean times • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

EGSKEIDING

38

2016 • Hazeldean times • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

hazeldean lifestyle

• By wie gaan die kinders woon?

eroy La Grange of Abland explains: “Phase 1 was sold out prior to completion of construction. The tenants include top companies like Discovery, Panasonic, PaySolutions and EcoElementum. We are extremely satisfied with the return that this project has delivered to date.” La Grange indicates that investors purchase these sectional title office units to occupy or as a “To Let” investment since top tenants are literally queueing for space. Phase 1 purchasers are already seeing in excess of 10% growth. The rights for laboratories, consulting rooms, and even a sub-acute hospital or clinic implies that doctors, pathologists, physiotherapists, dentists and dental technicians amongst other medical professionals, can be accommodated. Tenants also enjoy state of the art security, stand-by generator, optic fibre network and modern finishes. The quality of this

office park, along with its location in a sought after area which is experiencing a shortage of office space, all contribute to the success of this project. Phase two is now virtually completed and tenants will be able to take occupation upon registration of a 100 (or more) square meter office building with four parking bays. The Willows has become an exciting node with shops and restaurants in the Grove and Willow Way shopping centre, motor dealerships and show rooms for Porsche, Lexus and Toyota, as well as the Harley-Davidson Bulls Chapter. “Why rent office space if you are able to purchase your own office for less than the price of an average house in Willows? This way your “rent” effectively becomes the instalment on your own asset that keeps growing in value” said Le Grange. Enquiries can be directed to him on 082 442 6691.

SPRING air is in the

Finally, the days are getting longer and the nights are getting warmer. This means one thing: Winter is coming to an end and spring is on its way. Blossoms blooming, birds chirping, feeling the sun on your skin again – there are many reasons to love spring! Here are our top ten healthy reasons to love spring.

GOODBYE, WINTER SKIN!

The freezing temperatures, harsh winds and dry air in winter can wreak havoc on your hair and skin. The end of winter also brings the end of chapped lips, dry and flaky skin and split ends. It can be tempting to skip moisturizing when your skin no longer feels like it needs it, but a good moisturizer with sun protection is a must all year round.

WE CAN EAT OUTSIDE AGAIN

SUMMER SALADS

SICK SEASON IS OVER

YOU’RE MOTIVATED TO GET IN SHAPE

There are no studies that prove that eating outside is healthier for you, but science has proved that being outside in general is good for you so you may as well eat while you are there. If nothing else, the views and fresh air make you want to eat at leisure and not rush – and when you eat slower, you also tend to eat less.

Summer colds are unpleasant but flu activity definitely decreases as the weather warms up. Remember to wash your hands at least four or five times a day, especially before and after working with food, dealing with children and if you come into contact with someone who is sick, to decrease your chance of catching one of those pesky summer colds.

In winter, it is so tempting to snuggle on the couch with a big mug of hot chocolate and something sweet to nibble on to help our bodies warm up. In summer however, colourful leafy salads and fresh juicy fruit are so much more satisfying. Much more seasonal fresh produce is available so use your body’s natural cravings to spring clean your diet.

Spring has so many reasons to kick start that summer body. Sign up for a summer race or plan a beach trip, buy some new clothes that show more skin now that it’s warmer, or just make yourself feel better after those long winter months. Spring is full of inspiration to stick to your diet and fitness goals.

A HEALTHY HOME

In winter, we keep trying to keep the heat in and inevitably end up keeping the dust and germs in too. During warmer weather, you can open the windows and have fresh air moving through your house. Giving your home a spring clean can make you healthier too. Not only can cleaning burn serious calories, a study showed that owners of tidy homes were likely to be more physically fit than messy people.

BREAK THE CABIN FEVER

Spending time with friends is always fun but when it’s that cold outside and going anywhere means layering up until you can’t bend your knees or elbows anymore, you’re more likely to stay under the blanket on the couch. Many studies have shown that spending time with friends has multiple health benefits. Friends help lower stress levels, help raise your self-esteem and even boost your immune system.

HELLO SUNSHINE!

Vitamin D is essential for strong bones because it helps the body use the calcium from our diets. The symptoms of a Vitamin D deficiency can be moodiness, achy bones and not thinking clearly. Now that the sun is out again and you can expose more skin, you’ll be getting that extra dose. Be careful of taking a Vitamin D supplement though, too much Vitamin D is linked to increased risk of death.

WE CAN PLAY OUTSIDE TOO…

No matter what you do outside, walk the dog, ride a bike, sit in the shade and read a book, just being outside is good for you. Being in nature has shown to increase brain function and concentration and reduce the risk for attention disorders such as ADHD. Being outside lowers stress levels, reduces the effects of aging (but stay out of the sun!) and makes you feel happier. 44
