Lumiere Festival Edinburgh
Reimagining the closes of the Royal Mile and bringing them a new vibe. Introducing the concepts of future living and atmosphere to the spaces and people that pass them by daily.

Theme & Call to Artists
The theme of the festival is The Future. Imaginging Edinburgh in a new light and exploring the ideas of Dystopian and Utopian futures. Giving the closes a new ambience to provoke thought in to the development of the city cente. Primarily targeting the local people who go about their daily business through the closes and encouraging them to engage with their surroundings more.
The project is open to artist applications. There are various closes that can be chosen by the artists which they can produce a linear futuristic lighting outcome within. Within the main theme artists will have their own take on Edinburgh’s future. They must follow the colour scheme outlined later on in the booklet and devise projects to these guidlines.
Research
Ethnographic research of the closes took place to gain a deeper understanding of the spaces around the Royal Mile and most importantly the people that inhabit and frequent the area.
Anchor Close. Wide and well used by people travelling from Waverly to the Royal Mile. Very open and light. Is welcoming night or day.
Advoaates Close. Another wide and well used path from the New Town to the Old Town. Wide and welcoming with a serene pub scene existing there.
Tall buildings are an integral part of the closes characteristics. Towering sky scapes and interesting twists and turns can be easily forgotten in the heights of the buildings.
Many of the closes harbour steep hills and crooked steps and walkways. Seemingly safe during they day they can become hazardous at night with the closes having limited lighitng.
Night time opens up some more interesting spaces within the closes. Highlighting lighting deficiences as well as light fixtures that are already in place.
The views coming out of the closes should also be taken in to consideration. How the Royal Mile is viewed from the closes should be as important as how the closes are viewed from the Royal Mile.
Lighting Context
Looking a lot at other UK based festivals I soon realised that there was a common theme of history and presenting the past in modern ways. This helped develop my theme of ‘future’ as the city should be seen as ever developing and changing with the times instead of seen solely for it’s past events.

Branding
The next few pages highlight the brand awareness I wish to create for the festival. The colours that will be mainly used in the festival itself show through in the likes of flyers and posters for the event which are still in the prototyping stage. The event map is also included to give a layout of where events will take place. This is accompanied by small trinkets available to the event attendees to make them feel more a part of the festival.

Lighting Concepts
Ideas for the proposed aesthetic of the festival. Primarily linear lighting highlighting the nooks and crannies of the closes themselves. Adding different atmospheres to the closes through colour and placement of the lights.
