Hello dear readers, Welcome to yet another issue of Gutshot Magazine. While the battle against the impending (or are we there already?!) 3rd wave of Covid in India rages on, the rest of the world is limping back into some form of normalcy. For us poker lovers, news that the live World Series of Poker will take place later this year brought much cheer. While India has been repped well at the world’s biggest poker event in the last few years, this year might thin out even the overall numbers of attendance. Our cover feature this month is Prateek Shukla, an investment banker and poker enthusiast who is also India’s first author of poker-related fiction. This 30-something year old, who goes by the pseudonym ‘Shuklaji’, is originally from the holy city of Varanasi and presently is based out of the UK. His latest book “Gamble of Love”, is a bit of a thriller which talks about love and relationships even weaving elements of spirituality and Indian mythology in the course of it. Much of this happens with the game of poker in the fore and/or background so its nice tip of the hat to this game we love. ‘Gamble of Love’ is Prateek’s second book and we talk to him about that and more in these pages. We have news and information from other gaming verticals like rummy, fantasy, e-sports and more. The recently introduced Gutshot Player of the Month turns the spotlight on well known grinder Anirban Das and we discuss his exploits on the virtual felts. That about does it for this issue. We really hope you and yours are doing well. Till next time, stay safe and keep crushing!

Blockchain: A legitimate disruptor for gaming and poker No more associated with finance, Blockchain technology has now made an impressionable move into gaming and poker industry too. We take a quick look at how blockchain tech with its secured, complex and robust data encryption, can redefine the world as we know it.
By Athira Laji
O
ne of the most dominant features/inventions of new-gen technology has undoubtedly been blockchain. Its high-end cryptography and distributed ledgers make it a legitimate disruptor for industries where payments are being rolled on every minute and want their digital assets unbackable and unalterable. Blockchain is a key power for a potential game-changer for

gaming and other real money segments due to its way of storing, transferring, and distributing data across massive networks. Its unique set of properties enables the data to remain unchanged or unmanipulated. Secured by complex cryptography that promotes robust data encryption, blockchain technology is now being used in redefining the entire scenario of the gaming industry as we know it.
More than just finance Blockchain technology is no more just associated with finance as it also made its presence felt in the gaming industry too. One has constantly faced problems of piracy, unjust revenue sharing, duplication of in-game assets, etc. With the potential to overcome these challenges, blockchain will play a critical role in designing and redefining the gaming industry for developers, distributors, and players.
Blockchain technology allows game developers to develop hard-cross forged characters and resemble gamers and provide a more personalised experience, otherwise not possible in classic online games. Exclusive and unique artefacts for their games which are non-fungible maybe appreciate in value over time. These characters are hard to counterfeit and may even be moved across games. A hoax call? Most developers believe blockchain technology is a game-changer, but a little over one-third disagree, viewing blockchain as mostly hype. Elisha Ruth Parmar, CEO/Founder, Digital Crew – India, says,” Blockchain is not the hype, cryptocurrencies are. Blockchain is here to stay and change the way we live our day-to-day life.” Project Ethereum has changed the way people see finance now. It has taken out the finance from the larger institution to the smarter contracts. Blockchain has started tapping other industries like art, gaming, etc., that are undergoing transformation daily.
Sergey Mukhanov, CEO, Connective Games
New companies/projects are predicted to emerge as market leaders that will shape the future of technology using blockchain. Sergey Mukhanov, CEO, Connective Games, says, “We do believe there is a market for blockchain poker but that it is a niche one. We can see it working well in grey markets and with standalone brand operations.” This is mainly because blockchain technology better addresses payment reliability and when it comes to the distribution of cards in these markets as compared to the approach taken in established and regulated jurisdictions. The need for one in poker!! Poker is a game of skills, and if players have transparency on the cards dealt or other events on the game, then for sure right talent will be on the top, and the community will grow. Trust and fairness are two of the most critical factors in online poker, assures Mukhanov, whose company Connective Games helped build one of India’s most trusted online poker platforms, Spartan Poker. Blockchain technology can certainly help to address the grey areas as it is provably fair. This is why we are looking at more jurisdictions to regulate and license online poker, providing consumers with additional layers of trust that the sites they are playing at are reputable. Blockchain cannot solve every problem, but for sure, it can bring transparency among users by providing the temper-proof history of an event that happened
Ruth Parmar
on its network. “Even if we keep transparency aside, blockchain has removed the boundaries for players. On a blockchain, players can use cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Litecoin, etc., by keeping their identity private. These transactions can happen in a faster and cheaper way, and there is no middleman involved for settlement, as they are done by public deployed verifiable Smart Contract”, says Parmar. Blockchain can help in providing an unbiased and 100% fair platform to the poker community. Blockchain throughout! There is a significant percentage of people or thought leaders who are in favour of using blockchain technology. They believe that blockchain can turn the tables and restructure the gaming market by creating more immersive and boundary-blurring games than ever. Though poised for a sea of change, how the gaming industry would navigate hurdles of regulations and technology and embrace blockchain is something that only time will tell!

Shuklaji is pretty much still unfazed by the fact that he just made an unconventional mark for himself in the poker world. Not just as the first Indian poker fiction author but as a storyteller who successfully blended spirituality, Indian mythology, and poker and crafted a beautiful narrative out of it. The one thing that became pretty much clear to us during the interview was how much this gem of a person adores India, India’s poker scene, and Indian mythology. Let’s talk about how a boy from Varanasi made a mark for
himself and ended up in London as an investment banker? I am a big believer in ‘scribbles of the past’. So, though I was not fortunate enough to stay longer in Varanasi, the time I spent with my family was fruitful enough for me to learn about values and beliefs. I grew up in a family of spiritual masters where stories about values, religious beliefs, and spirituality were part of the daily ritual. The lessons taught during my time there helped me become self-dependent. This value of being self-dependent is now my way of living – being in the present but very much

It is not necessary that you must always win; what matters is the mindset. As a poker player, you pretty much want to put your mind on the right amount to bet, knowing the right strategy when you are under the gun, whether you wish to offset the momentum or not. So, there is this line between fear and action, where I think the mindset plays a significant role that’s the thing I fell in love with. I have watched numerous WSOPs, followed so many players, rewatched poker movies like 5-6 times. So, poker has always been a part of my journey. I have always been in a quantitative field, and poker got me very much intrigued. There is quite a notion about bankers being the epitome of “No work life balance”? But you have shattered the ceiling by being a poker player and writer now. How did this transformation happen with such diverse choices? Investment banking has a pretty wide range of sections. I am involved with a lot of AI and Data Science market strategy which is a new thing. Though it is a corporate job at the end of the day, it is not dull but quite exciting. clined towards it since childhood. So, writing was my idea of a creative outlook/outreach. I always wanted to tell Indian history or mythological stories and convey the message to people through different characters - something that I have tried to portray in this book. How did Buddha’s House of Mirrors happen? I always believed that anyone who can write a book on spirituality is very much human in themselves. While getting through their life, humans make mistakes, have their ups and downs, and then regain their position in society and life and sail their boat in the right direction. For me too, it was the same thing, when you are far away from home from a very early age, you live in a different country, speak a foreign language. Overall, you have to learn principles to keep you motivated and keep you aligned to some goal. There is always this uncertainty that stares at you, especially when you are a student in the international market. Because I was always inclined towards spirituality, Indian history, and mythology, it just clicked that millennials or people of our generation are not getting the proper rationality or reasoning behind it. They are very open to learning about it as more self-awareness and understanding and debates about gender identity, sexuality, society, atheist, religions, etc. What I wished to do with Buddha’s House of Mirrors is create 14

a very simple handbook that juxtaposes principles from Vedanta and Buddhism that helps of brings out certain life insights for the readers. These insights are based on self-introspection, self-observation without judgment, and when one says, ‘live in the present, meditate, focus on your game or let go what,’ does that mean exactly. What came first in terms of theme when you decided to start writing Gamble of love? Buddha’s House of Mirrors, the first book that I wrote, has this setup where a person hallucinates that he is having this conversation with Buddha. So, I took that as a reference and introduced my main character Alia as someone who talks to Buddha while hallucinating. This helped me bring out the spiritual undertone in the book.
Pakistan who is very much connected to her roots. There existed a place called Pahlavas Kingdom across the River Indus in Indian history books; I took that into a more fictional way, making Pahlavas her ancestry. The story describes the time when she became an orphan, her journey to India where she meets a Tawaif in Delhi who introduces her to dance and embraces Goddess Kali. Her story depicted aspects of Indian mythology. Introducing poker and spy thriller bought elements of thrill and excitement, which encompassed the story quite successfully.
How did you manage to narrow down the dialogues and the characters? For an author, irrespective of genre, it is always about the tone. Every character has a tone, emotional stuff, and the baggage that The chronological order of the they carry. Even their dialogues theme was spirituality, Indian need to be unique. So, with Gamble of Love, I wanted to create a strong base before I jumped into poker itself and strategise the game for the character itself. So, from a character development point of view, I explored the spirituality aspect first and then brought Indian mythology into it. This character called Suhana is a princess from
We have Jacky, who is a vagabond and an orphan guy. From a very early age, he was exposed to the adult world, and he knows his way around, and he sort of tries to mimic actor Jackie Shroff. He is from Mumbai and wants to be a tapori! So, here, I know he is not going to compromise on anything; he will be a guy who takes
his own decisions and is going to be very much open about it. Here, I know the situation in which I have to place him. In contrast, Karan is another character who is a young millennial guy, alone and lives in London but is more away from the world, reserved – a complete contrast of what Jackie is. So, his dialogues are more introvert, as he speaks less but gets bullied by one of his comical and digital assistants called Sia, which the Indian RAW agency renders while they follow the criminal network. So, here I knew how to write his dialogues. Each character needed a different dialogue delivery. Here, I took the help of poems. So, a lot of emotions that the book conveys are through poetic lyrics and gazals. I wrote ghazals inspired from Mughal-era for the character of Suhana. So, how she lost her parents and how her uncle took over is wholly written in poems; there is no prose around it. Even Alia’s character who is the main lead and the poker prodigy - her First poker introduction is conveyed through a poem with many emotions that might surprise the readers. These poems help the readers have a connection with the characters because, through them, I connect. So, storytelling is not just writing something on paper, but it is like trying to make the readers feel with the fiercest words possible, and in that case, prose and poems always work. Especially gazals, they have sought of survived and endured so many generations, and it still prevails and still connects with people. How much research went into writing this book? The research did not take much time because I have been writing for so long, and these characters were already in my mind. So, the book got drafted in 2 months! How did you combine spiritual theories and poker, especially when such a tone has never been explored before? I was pretty confident that this theme and book would work. believer of God or not. Whatever your culture is, you have values, laws, and family around you that thrive along with us. Devdutt Pattanaik has put it beautifully- ‘Mythology is the operating system of our society. The millennials are pretty much intrigued to understand the history and its application in the present scenario. Now poker is a game of decision-making. People from diverse background are levelled on the poker board with just chips and cards. It is a fair treat - you are playing along with the people and against the people. So, your decision-making depends not only on the external environment but how you feel internally. For example, how’s the day going?, what are you feeling? Are you feeling sad because someone said something to you because you can’t let it go? So, here, spirituality helps you with tools to understand yourself , and before making any decision, how you need to empty that bucket of burden or be in the flow of the game. Irrespective of what you believe in, these tools help you connect with your natural game, inherently, becoming your spiritual beliefs. Everyone has a different way of achieving that flow – some people let go, and some let them set themselves into music, play sports, etc. So, everyone connects to their inner self differently, working to make the past, present, and future anxiety go away. That’s where the amalgamation of religion, spirituality, and poker helps bring on that connect, emotional undertone, 16

Spiritual learning should be considered like an awareness or information gathering. Another biggest example is Phil Ivey. If you have watched his game, you will be aware of his behaviour on the table. He is very reserved and silent but speaks when the right moment comes. I am a big fan of Phil Ivey. You ought to learn from them. Everyone has their way of dealing with adverse situations. Natural8 Natural8’s Smart Bet system uses a machine-learning for real-time clustering of all betting data from every player per game type. It gives you the perfect betting suggestion for a specific situation, and once the algorithm reaches the end of the tunnel, it will be able to learn your preferences on the spot, and you will be able to bet in any given situation with just one tab. One of the critical aspects of Natural8 seamless experience is PokerCraft add which keeps track of your entire poker journey in its database, where the game can be replayed and analysed. PokerCraft visualises the set of hands in various exciting ways, providing insights into your play that the raw data alone won’t show, and is accessible from both Natural8’s mobile and desktop apps. Tackling Bot Farms The invasion of technology has opened doors to a next-gen experience, but its downside is bot farms and how it is a major concern for poker platforms. Mukhanov from Connective Games, while taking us through the checking mechanisms put in place to ensure the bots do not interfere with their application, says, “Connective Games is constantly developing and im-

Breaking down the challenges along with facing the evolving and ever-advancing technology, Mukhanov says, “Connective Games, operators, and the wider poker community are all committed to fair and safe play. Blocking a bot on the platform is an evolving process. Elisha Ruth Parmar, CEO/Founder, Digital Crew, India, says, “We use multiple scripts to detect the bot on the platform, and sometimes it also involves the human in the loop to check the behaviour of the suspicious account.”
Cyber Crime is not only on poker, but it is everywhere on the internet. The best way to stop cybercrime, as Parmar suggests, are to educate and encourage users to: 1. Use strong passwords 2. Left Poker-Faced By AI Artificial Intelligence can now play and win poker! Triumph over human opponents in poker is like setting a benchmark, going beyond the general paradigm and stretching the boundaries of poker. Here, we take a quick look at AI’s diet plan against human players.
By Ananya Agarwalla
If a computer that has learned to play only from past data constantly wins and lacks the same capacity that humans do, it shows that the realm of poker goes way beyond the idea of luck. It was in July 2019, that a piece of news spread like wildfire across the poker community all around the world that a technology named Plurubis beat the top poker players at heads-up no-limit Texas Hold ‘em poker. Darren Elias, Chris Ferguson and others with World Poker Tour Titles were beaten alas by a com20

puter. These players are not just famous; Darren Elias, held the record for most World Poker Tour titles, and Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, was the winner of six World Series of Poker events. To put it simple, ‘the computer’ played a sound, game-theory optimal strategy often played by the top ‘human’ poker professionals; even the top ‘human’ poker players were not successful in finding a way to exploit it. The AI’s diet plan Over 12 days, Plurubis was tested by playing against a pool of professionals who have won
more than $1 million playing poker. They were always six-player games, meaning that the AI was put against five human players. Over 100,000 hands, the computer consistently beat the human professionals. Apart from only winning, the AI even developed new strategies that humans currently do not employ. Different types of bet sizing techniques were used. It clearly showed that the computer, even in a game based on unpredictable gameplay, bluffing and unknown information, was not taken lightly. It can compute and formulate strategies based on data and use
math to its advantage. According to a report in Science Daily, Pluribus’ algorithms instead some surprising features into its strategy. For instance, most human players avoid “donk betting” -- that is, ending one round with a call and starting the next round with a bet. It’s seen as a weak move that usually doesn’t make strategic sense. But Pluribus placed donk bets far more often than the professionals it defeated. Its primary strength is its ability to use mixed strategies. Tuomas Sandholm and Noam Brown were developers of Pluribus whose older model was known as Libratus, the earlier tech could beat four poker pros playing a combined 120,000 hands of heads-up no-limit Texas Hold ‘em! Religiously following the math It is interesting to see that while playing, the computer employed different strategies in different and even similar circumstances. One would expect tech to be more repetitive in their approach to a problem, instead it seems that humans have more predictable patterns! Another aspect to keep in mind is that due to the lack of emotion the computer possesses, it can follow exactly what the math shows. If the math shows that the chance of winning this hand is 25%, the computer would take a risk without hesitation. In contrast, a human might lack the
confidence to make the same decision for various reasons. On average, the computer could make decisions 20 seconds faster than the standard professional poker player. Computer is the most intelligent animal now! However, it is high time, we accept that AI is here to take the lead. This AI will be a force to be reckoned with. Chess’ and ‘Go’ have been used as a standard to determine intelligence or IQ levels. AI has effectively beaten humans when it comes to strategy, intuition and reasoning in these games as well’. Tech like Plurubis also plays a significant role in the evolution of the game of poker. The future of poker looks even more challenging with an array of exciting gameplays being developed. The AI even serves as an effective way to prove that
poker is a game of math’s and odds. Simply put, with only 52 cards in the deck you can easily calculate which cards you need to make your hand, the chance of getting them and what cards work against you. By doing this math you can bet accordingly by putting more money in the pot when the odds are advantageously in your favor and less when they are not. There is an element of chance that you may not win the particular hand you are playing this time, but if the math is in your favor, over time you will be a winning player. So no, poker is not your average fun casino gambling game like blackjack, roulette and many others. Though luck may work in your favor in the short run, it will not be your magical potion steamrolling your bank account to the crores you want in the big picture. That will happen only when you develop the right skills. GUTSHOT

or the first ‘Gutshot Player of the Month’, we had some kickass results, and some standout displays too with immense performances in June. We were quite overwhelmed with the nominations received and, in the end, Aniraban Das has beaten off competition to win the very 1st Gutshot Player of the Month! With several massive achievements to his name, including clinching two IOPC titles in 2019, Anirban Das is said to be one of the terrific poker talents in our country! Anirban has been recently playing his best moves and finishing ITM in most of the tournaments he chose to grind in. His victory numbers spoke a lot for himself but his usernames ‘pottysingh’ or ‘nocluewho’ sounded the quite opposite – take him lightly but he is surely one of those guys who would keep you on the edge of your seat! We caught up with him for a quick chat before he rushed off to ship another tournament!

Consistently grinding and finishing in the money or grinding, shipping, and taking a break now and then. Given that I am not a full-time pro, I rarely find time to study and analyse my game using tools and hand reviews. Because of this, I think grinding 12+ tables, time and improving through pattern recognition and repetition has worked best for me. I do think breaks are also important in-between series to rest my mind and pursue other hobbies and get family time. How was the feeling when you were chosen as the Gutshot Texas Holdem MTT Poker Player of the month?” It feels great to receive this recognition. Though I won’t be stopping here; I am more focused on analysing mistakes and finding more improvements in my game. You have been consistently grinding on PokerStars and have finished ITM in more than 60 tournaments. What helps in the long run?
How is the interface of PokerStars any different from the other brands in the business? I think the software is a lot smoother and offers a lot of customisation, however other brands have improved too recently as well. Since PokerStars is an international brand, what are the few perks that players usually get? I love the Stars coin rewards program and have been able to get most electronics over the last 2
post losing hands when I was way ahead. Also, I used to turn off chat during sessions but now I do my best to speak to players in case they ping me in session. The social aspect of the game is really missing online and I try my best to have a conversation in case any player wants to. How do you deal with downswings in poker? Analyse mistakes, don’t repeat them, and trust the process.
years through this program. In an interview with Gutshot, earlier, you had mentioned that during MBA days at IIM Ahmedabad, you used poker as a way to connect with different sets of people. How do you think poker helps in socializing? Offline poker with friends is great because it allows for bonding in a fun environment. It also reveals how different people handle emotions and those insights are useful in improving other aspects of interpersonal relationships. In the recent past, you have been grinding intensely. What are some of the takeaways from these recent sessions? I have gotten better at 12 tables with practice in the last 2 months. Earlier I was only able to play up to 6 tables. I also have been able to control my decision-making
Is there a particular strategy that you use when playing high-value tournaments? Only one adjustment from overall strategy and that is to 3 barrel bluff more often than lower and mid-stakes games. Higher buy-in tournaments usually have fields that consider what other players may have whereas at lower stakes it is a lot harder to bluff someone off a strong hand. Is it a boon or bane to have a partner who plays poker? Definitely a boon! It helps to discuss hands and get another perspective. It also helps with encouragement after a bad session and celebrating with someone who understands the game after a good session. The monikers you go by are extremely peculiar. Were there any reasons why ‘pottysingh,’ ‘nocluewho’ was chosen? ‘pottysingh’ was a nickname of a childhood friend. ‘nocluewho’ was because of how irritated I was that Spartan allowed players to keep
changing IDs and I would forget my notes on them. As a poker player, where do you see yourself five years down the line? Keep minimising mistakes, putting in volumes, and getting better at the game! At some point in the next 5 years I would also like to explore opportunities to give back to the game via streaming, coaching, or other ways to pass on my learnings. While this poker magnate wishes to see himself as a more responsible player five years down the line, we surely want him to lift more titles and shine through it all. Das sets the perfect example for newbies as he wishes to learn, unlearn, and also give back to the industry.
FUN BOX: 1) Your 2 AM friends from the poker circuit? My wife Mahima and MBA batchmate Anant 2) Rank the following brands as per the number of offers and high-value guarantees. Spartan Poker, PokerStars, Adda52, PokerBaazi PokerStars, Spartan Poker, Pokerbaazi, Adda 52 3) One poker rule you religiously follow Trust in the process, results will follow. GUTSHOT

razilian poker player and winner of the Best Male Streamer in 2020 Mundo Poker Awards, Luiz Torres is a trailblazer in the online poker scene. Most well-known by his monikers’ Luizftorres’ and ‘Poker Raiz,’ Torres was one of the first poker streamers from Brazil. His unique content and engaging style catapulted him into a wellknown figure in online poker. While he had to overcome many social stigmas that come with becoming a poker pro, Torres has not let anything hold him down and eventually partnered with Natural8, one of Asia’s largest poker networks, in 2013. In our interview with Torres, he dived into his experience with the Natural8 platform and his journey as a Twitch streamer. You started playing poker in 2007, before which you were working as a teacher. How has your life changed after dedicating yourself to the game? At the beginning of my career, I worked as a teacher but dedicated my spare time to poker. Little by little, I was regularly winning at poker. Eventually, I made the decision to dedicate myself only to the game. My quality of life and earn-

ings improved significantly, which helped me better my family structure. In 2013, you moved to Natural8 to continue your career. Do share more about your experience on the platform and how it has helped you grow. In 2013, I changed from being a sit-and-go professional to being a tournament player. I was increasing my profit in tournaments little by little. Sometime later, I opened my Twitch account and became a Natural8 partner. Since the first day of this partnership, I enjoyed playing on the site and even encouraged other people to play. I already saw great potential in Natural8; that’s why it became the powerhouse today here in Brazil and Asia. Along with this partnership, I also grew as a streamer. I managed to develop several promotions, sweepstakes, and freerolls for my audience, which made my Twitch channel grow a lot.
Tell us about your journey as a streamer on Twitch and what pushed you onto this platform? It’s been two years since I’ve been working as a streamer. I’ve been a poker pro for many years and have always enjoyed watching poker streams on Twitch streams while playing, but I didn’t find a Brazilian streamer to follow. Other people who knew my personality encour-
aged me to to become a streamer. I bought my webcam, and and with courage, I started my channel, even though I did not have an audience to start with. In the first week, I had an average of 5 viewers, then poker players got to know me little by little, and my Twitch channel grew to where I am today. As a professional player and a streamer, what advantages does a platform like Twitch offers to poker players? Twitch offers us the space to broadcast, so people get to know the work little by little. Before I was a streamer, practically nobody in poker knew me. Today here in Brazil almost all poker players know who I am. Furthermore, Twitch is now an essential tool for new players to get to know the game and improve it by watching professionals. Being a streamer is not easy. What is the one piece of advice you always give to those who
want to follow in your footsteps? Have a quality layout and equipment! You have to be very authentic and confident and interact a lot with the audience. Still, you shouldn’t get shaken by negative comments. Of course, you have to constantly be streaming, so people don’t forget about you. Since playing on Natural8, what are some of the tech features that make Natural8 unique? I really like the buy and sell action from players, and the final table betting. The different types of emotes that we can send at the table are also really cool, and I also really enjoy using the snapcam. How important is it for an online poker platform to have a seamless interface and design? It’s crucial because we spend most of the day playing, so the platform has to be perfect for people to feel good while they’re playing.
Which was the funniest comment you ever received on your Twitch streams? They always compare me to famous people, for example, the Uruguayan football player Luis Suárez. They love to see when I get nervous about the game on Twitch.

more about their opponents in whatever ways possible. Every move they make, every hand they simulate, maximises their odds. Using essential poker tools, tracker software, hand simulations, and learning math redefines how you play and understand poker. One, however, needs to understand which technology is most helpful for them and how effectively they can incorporate it into their game. Poker pro players use Heads Up Display’s (HUDs), solvers, equity calculators, and poker trackers to their advantage. To get a better understanding of how some of this specific software is being used, Gutshot got in touch with professional poker crushers – Siddharth Barot, a killer high stakes poker player as well as previous Adda52 millions winner and Sagar Patnaik, primarily a high stakes cash grinder and tournament player as well.
Sagar Patnaik Understanding the tech guide To understand the extent to which these crushers use technology in their game, we questioned how they are making use of these softwares and to what extent these technologies determine a poker player’s merits. Multiple poker software help you understand the game of poker better. If used correctly these software help fix leaks in your poker game. For example, a HUD can help you understand where you are losing/winning the most. After every session, you can check which positions you were winning/losing. This enables
you to understand if you want to change your game to play tight or loose. Equilab is another poker software where you can run range vs. range analysis and find the equity of different hands against the presumed opponent’s range. This can help you understand what ranges to call against other people with different 3bet stats and help you improve your win rate”. Your go-to tech guide A few are their go-to guides out of all the software, helping them the most in crushing the game. “I will have to say that H2N has helped me the most,” says Barot. H2N has a positional HUD function which helps us understand what opponents are doing in different spots. For example, an opponent has a 12% overall 3bet stat, which means he plays quite aggressively on a 6max table. But when we open UTG and he 3bets us from BB than this overall 12%, 3bet stat will not be accurate because he has more incentive to call rather than 3bet. Positional H2N HUD will show what his actual 3% percentage is in this spot, which will allow us to call and play accordingly. Visual software help understand things in a better way. Patnaik uses solvers in his game. He says, “I do use a bit of PioSolver to understand mechanics behind range interactions, how range compositions lead to different strategy outputs, etc. It’s also a very visual software, so it does help understand things in a better way”. For MTTs, people work more around ICMIZER/HRC. For cash game players, it’s PIOSolver,
Simple Postflop, etc. Other software to track your hands and frequencies like PT4 and HM3 is a must. They also display HUD on tables while playing. A HUD is a must to understand your opponent better. It helps adjust specific spots where you might have to deviate from what you have studied to be the best line from a solver output. One of the common tools used by players who are just starting out and equally by professionals is odds and equity calculators for determining the odds of winning they have in any given hand. HUDs and Solvers Solvers simplify your game to heuristics (if used and interpreted in the right ways). As mentioned earlier, solvers help you visualise how the game tree makes equity value better. They can also be used to craft specific strategies based on opponent types. Irrespective of whichever games you play, a little bit of solver help when learning the game off the table goes long. HUDs are very much an essential part of a poker player’s life. If you are looking to make a living through poker, then you must have a HUD. Otherwise, no matter how exceptionally talented you are at poker, other people, who religiously make use of HUD, will crack your game while you keep playing the same game. However, the bad news is most poker rooms in India do not support mainstream HUDs. In short, there isn’t a single poker
tracker which works on all major poker rooms in India. As mentioned earlier, a HUD helps you understand your opponent better. In my opinion, says Patnaik, “it’s probably a priority over using solvers. HUDs have been around long before the solver era. They have been one of the earliest software’s accessible for the industry.” Be on a pace with tech To conclude, in a world that is changing at every turn because of new inventions, adapting your game and incorporating technology has become more critical than ever for poker players. Your earning is another person’s loss, and so you need to be better than the person sitting next to you at the table. Technology can help improve your game, make winning more effective and efficient, and reduce tilt as you have stats backing you up, which may help you become less emotional in the decision-making process and post that. Both Siddharth Barot and Sagar Patnaik have seen the advantages of using software and technolgy and used it to their benefit. With online poker becoming more challenging by the day and more players using different weapons to win, skills may not simply be enough to keep winning; changing with the tech world is imperative as well. Accelerating India’s Skill Gaming Path In this conversation with us, Roland Landers, CEO, AIGF, talks about how guided by their online skill gaming charter, AIGF is all in for localised and regional gaming content that people will relate to.

Roland Landers, CEO, AIGF being a self-regulating community? Would you please walk us through your association with AIGF? The objective of the AIGF is to unify the stakeholders of the online skill gaming industry by bringing them on a common platform, establishing processes, and creating awareness about
this sunrise sector. AIGF members are guided by its online skill games charter, which is the basis for the self-regulatory community for the industry. I have been associated with the AIGF since May 2016. One of the most significant factors contributing to the
growth of the gaming industry is the localised depiction of gaming content. How imperative has this been in establishing a solid base for the local Indian players to be recognised in the gaming world, especially players from second-tier cities? We’ve seen this happening in the Indian entertainment content context, that content in a regional language is where growth occurs. This stands true for gaming content as well. Localised and regional content that people will relate to will always be appreciated as the market expands, and that’s where the real growth will take off in Tier 2 and 3 towns. It is relevant because gaming content doesn’t have a language barrier as such, but localisation of the content itself leads to more relatability with the gamers. That is why we are seeking several adoptions from the gamer communities. From a 350 million level today, it is expected to reach 500 million. That is the kind of growth we’re expecting, and that will come from localised content. What are the best practices implemented by AIGF to ensure the growth of the gaming industry?

There is a lack of legal uniformity because of the divergent views on the subject adopted by different states. The nature of the businesses is online and digital, so it needs a central nodal ministry to support the self-regulatory processes to give it solidity. Hence, it has to be looked at from a national level and needs to be kept away from the ambit of the state acts and laws. But because this has not yet happened, there are constraints to the industry’s growth. Evolving over the decades and everytime giving a new definition of interactive element, gaming & its technology peers are on a journey to provide advanced ‘therapeutic’ experience. Here, we take on a nostalgic trip from the1st video game to gaming on cloud, taking tech pitstops in the journey.

rom being a casual form of entertainment to a booming industry, gaming has come a long way. As of 2020, the global gaming market was valued at $173.7 billion and is projected to reach $314.4 billion by 2026 (Mordor Intelligence). While the popularity of video and mobile games has fueled this growth, technology played an important role as well. Until the 1930s, the majority of people played board or card games. However, the advancements in computer technology paved the way for improvements we see today in the gaming sector. The starting point In 1958, the first video game called ‘Tennis for Two’ was created by Physicist William Higinbotham. While the concept was simple, it opened the door to more complex video games that we now play and love. As technology progressed even further, the world of gaming started to evolve as well. From bulky arcade-style games in the 1970s to introducing the more portable Nintendo console in the 1980s, it was clear that as time progressed, gaming technology was adapting quicker and more efficiently
By Donna Amo to the change. The entries of companies like Nintendo, Sega, Atari into the gaming market resulted in exciting new video games like Pong, Tetris, PacMan, Donkey Kong, Mario, etc. This brought along the equally thrilling tech like the Game Boy, Sega Mega Drive Console, Atari VCS, and the PLATO network system, which were among the first technological steps towards online multiplayer gaming. Going online While home consoles and arcades dominated most of the gaming market during the late 20th century, it was nothing compared to the internet’s impact. As the 90s rolled in, computer games were becoming increasingly better. Sony’s PlayStation or PS One, released in 1994, was among the new generation of video game consoles and quickly put Sony on the top of the list. With personal computers gradually making their way into every home, innovations in console gaming, the introduction of mobile phones, and the fast pace rise of the internet, the world of gaming was entering a new era. According to the
IIST World Forum, the dawn of the 21st century saw a boom in the global gaming market, which had estimated revenue of $36.17 billion ($48.23 billion with inflation). Microsoft, already a leader in manufacturing personal computers and software development, soon focused its attention on the gaming market. The year 2001 marked the company’s first venture into the gaming space with the Xbox, an electronic gaming console. Soon the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One followed, and Microsoft established itself in the gaming industry. Offering freemium services and a monthly subscription fee to play on the Xbox Live online gaming platform, Microsoft gave players a gaming experience that allowed them to connect. Mobile games apps make an entry Once mobile phones entered the market, the concept of portable gaming slowly changed. Among the first instances was the inclusion of GUTSHOT

the Snake game in Nokia phones. While many companies were trying to tap into the promising mobile gaming market, it wasn’t until Apple released its iPhone in 2007 that the market possibility opened up. The App Store in Apple’s smartphones and Google’s Play Store for Android users was the key that helped bring gaming into the mobile space. Countless free mobile game apps with in-app purchases soon began to dominate the market. A handheld device was now a doorway into a world of gaming that many thought would only be accessible via a gaming console. Fast-forward to the present, and the mobile gaming industry is already estimated to reach the $102.8 billion mark by 2023 (Statista). It is predicted to remain the fastest-growing segment in the gaming industry. The smartphone, coupled with the internet, revolutionised the way humans communicated and interacted with each other while also opening up avenues in gaming. With the rising popularity of casual mobile games like Angry Birds, Candy Crush, Flappy Birds, etc., mobile gaming was very much an opportunity just waiting to be explored. Soon, video game titles made solely for consoles and PC gaming were adapted for a mobile gaming experience. Gaming drives technology By the second decade of the 21st century, it was evident that instead of technology driving innovation in gaming, gaming was driving innovations in technology. Gaming-specific smartphones were designed by phones brands like ASUS, Lenovo, Samsung, and even Apple. 34

The ASUS ROG (Republic of Gamers) is the gaming branch of ASUS founded in 2006 dedicated to designing and developing gaming technology. The company has built everything from gaming smartphones to graphic cards and headsets. The ASUS ROG Phone 5 is considered one of the best gaming smartphones available in the market. Even laptops and personal computers were designed to fit the need of the gaming market. As more people started gaming, companies like Alienware, a subsidiary of Dell, began to focus on developing gaming laptops and desktops. The M17x laptop was one of the first products of Alienware after Dell acquired it in 2006. Since then, the company has established itself as one of the driving innovators in gaming technology. Innovation is the future When the popular game Pokémon Go was released in 2016, it introduced us to Augmented Reality (AR) as a tool that can be used for gaming. The mesh of virtual and real-world that AR brought to the table opened the doors for gaming to be included in a more nuanced way in everyday life. Social media is one place where AR gaming seems to be used the most. Instagram and Snapchat have now included various types of AR games in their filters. It was also reported that 35 percent of non-gamers were more likely to take an interest in AR gaming (Ericsson). On the other side, Virtual Reality (VR) gaming offers users a completely immersive gaming experi-
ence. Although the first VR gaming headsets were designed by Sega back in 1991, it wasn’t until Facebook acquired the Oculus VR for $2 billion in 2014, that VR started gaining popularity. That same year, Sony announced Project Morpheus, which was a VR headset for its PlayStation 4. Soon, more gaming companies like Nintendo with its Labo: VR kit for Nintendo Switch followed suit. Facebook’s VR headset, the Oculus Quest, generated around $5 million worth of sales in 2019 (VirtualSpeech). Some of the biggest gaming tech giants are now looking into making cloud gaming a reality. Currently, to play any video or computer game, one must either use a gaming disc or download the files to play it. Through cloud gaming, gamers will stream games like how they stream shows on Netflix or Amazon Prime. While the concept is not new, the technology surrounding it is still being developed. However, there are front runners in this area as well. Google launched its cloud streaming service called Stadia in 2019; Microsoft joined the bandwagon with xCloud and Sony with its PlayStation Now services. While there is still a long journey ahead to truly bring to life the full cloud gaming experience, the journey of gaming technology in just half a century is truly a thing to wonder about. The rapid pace of technological development is just an assurance that for gaming, the future is innovation.

This is especially true when it comes to the kind of technology that is now used by gamers of today. Let’s take a look at some of the top gaming gadgets that have either already made their mark in the market or are slated to do so. Ninth Generation Video Game Consoles Among some of the highly sought-after gaming consoles
in the world, the PlayStation 5 (PS5) by Sony Interactive Entertainment is probably on top of the list. Announced in 2019 and launched in November 2020, the PS5 is a part of the ninth generation of video game consoles. It was different from its predecessor with new features to increase performance and a bigger storage space. Well-received by consumers, by 31st March, 2021, Sony sold over 7.8 million units of PS5 and is expected to sell more than 67 million units by the year 2024 (Business Standard). High Function Headphones While
Sony is leading in the console department, HyperX is marking its spot around gaming headphones. To fully enjoy an immersive gaming experience, every sense needs to be heightened and that includes audio. This is why HyperX’s Cloud Revolver continues to be a favoured brand among avid gamers. Its Cloud Revolver is a wired, over-the-ear headset that provides simulated Surrounding sound. drop. Together, we are an ocean.” How did you become interested in game development and design? I was a gaming geek since childhood. When I reached a point where I had to decide on my career, I opted to be in the gaming industry. I always wanted to do something that kept me excited every day.every day. I love game development and design because it is full of creativity, where you can imagine and build. I’ve always been interested in learning how a game was made and how it could be created differently. As my interest in gaming grew, my career goals became clearer. First, I started as a co-founder of a gaming company in Chandigarh and after five years, I decided to start Hashbyte Studio. What is one project that you’re most proud of? Though I am proud of every project we have worked upon, the Oceans Board is the biggest project we have worked on and we are extremely proud of it. This game took our skillset to the next level creatively and technically. The Lite version of the game already has around 100k users. We are planning to release the complete version in the coming weeks. Another game that I am proud of is Battle Cow Unleashed. scratch. We have sustained a 100% delivery success rate and have never lost any project that we started. What part of the game development process do you enjoy the most? I enjoy the whole game development process. However, the most exciting part is the project planning stage, where we create the initial concepts and roadmap of the game. Good project planning is always the key to a project’s success. I also cherish the time we deploy the games to the stores, which is a moment of triumph for us as a game development company. For us, the feeling is similar to a rocket being safely landed on the moon! Which game was the most challenging to work with and why? Developing a game, big or small, is not a small feat. This is because game ideas always come from the imagination, and it’s always tough to control our
creativity. The fictional ideas are derived from vision, animated movies, or current market trends. Every game that we developed has its challenges. For example, in Oceans Board Game, the biggest challenge was creating Rule Engine, which executed more than 100 cards with thousands of permutations and combinations that a user can play. It was very challenging for us to test all the combinations. Another challenge was to get it ready for the AI training where we had to train the AI bot by running hundreds of games every minute and thousands of games every day. AI worked on a neural network which trained its system with every game it played and made decisions based on its trained neural network. For Battle Cow Unleashed, which was in 3D, maintaining the size of the game and making it compatible with low-end mobile devices was very challenging for us as it had many 3D assets.
What sets Hashbyte Studio apart from other game developers? Our vision is to deliver high-quality games to our clients and players. So, our workstyle ethics, client support, and 100% delivery success and satisfaction rate is what differentiates us from other game developers. Innovation plays a significant role in game design. What do you think is an upcoming trend in game design? Yes, I do agree that innovation plays a vital role in game design. our tagline, ‘Innovating Every Pixel,’ is derived from it. The use of AI for making the game’s levels hard and challenging for the users is one of the upcoming trends. The multiplayer games are rocking the market as it creates an environment where people can play together, have fun and challenge each other. Another upcoming trend is gamification for the utilities, such as banking services where they want to add gaming factors to educate users to their services, education institutions, etc. With gamification, we can create a virtual/simulated experience for the user to easily understand any product. Talking about AR and VR, do you think these tech trends will take off in India? Why? AR and VR will take their own time to take off in India as it needs an extra setup and the dependencies on hardware. To
play a game in VR you need to have a virtual reality headset which can cost you anywhere from $200 - $500. After which you will need a high end configuration computer for it, which can cost between $700 - $1000. So, it is quite tough and expensive to set up. In contrast, AR can be the next big thing in IIndia. It’s more interactive and doesn’t require any hardware support. Another challenge that we face in AR and VR is to educate users how to use it. How do you cater to the interests of India’s demographics? To cater to the audiences, we have to follow the latest market trends and keep ourselves updated with the newest content that users are excited to play. Beta testing our game is another good approach to get user feedback. In this process, we call hundreds of users to play our game, who then give us their feedback on the game. We take these feedbacks and try to improve the game to the best of our abilities.
with an AR feature in the game where users will be able to interact with the Unicorns through their mobile phones in the real world. They will be able to take pictures, create videos of them with Unicorns, and share it on social media. How are you coping with the looming threat of cybercrime? Cybercrimes are happening every single day. It’s like, we launch the game, and you can get the same game with everything unlocked on the internet within a few days. We, thus, integrate the security check in the game to avoid hacking as much as we can. Another major issue arising is online bullying. Many of the games provide a voice chat feature that users can misuse. This then leads to incidents of cyberbullying.

seeds of newer technology can be tested. Also, let’s not forget about AI, which is waiting to play a more prominent role in the gaming ecosystem. Many are aware of how FalconAI employed AI-powered tools to enhance the gameplay experience of esports players like never before. Furthermore, gaming is marred by heavy-duty downloads and expensive hardware. It would be a dream to witness these elements become obsolete.
And why do we say that? Not everyone can afford expensive and high-end hardware. The problem can be dealt with cloud gaming. If this happens sooner, we can happily bid adieu to the out-of-reach hardware and lengthy game downloads.
To what extent will cloud gaming help? Yes, this question may bog you down. Still, cloud gaming is just the thing game developers are looking at to solve one problem and streamline data processing methods. In cloud-based gaming, the cloud data centres will take over when it comes to storage and processing while gamers are seamlessly streaming graphics on their respective devices. All eyes are set on what’s going to come next. Technological advancements don’t mean a smoother ride but augments the overall gaming experience. Now that there are tournaments hosted in esports, these tech innovations are becoming the need of the hour. Live-streaming has become a lucrative medium to showcase talent for gamers who also use it to earn revenue. Social media platforms are popular mediums in which people share their content, but for gamers, platforms like Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook have proved to be a boon as they have amplified their presence and positions as top-notch gamers with loyal fanbase.
