We heard it through the grapevine: singers Leonard Caston, Gavin Hope, and Katalin Kiss will sing some of the greatest pop music ever written.

The HSO will take you on a musical journey of unforgettable Motown megahits, from Smokey Robinson to Marvin Gaye to the Supremes, from the Temptations to Gladys Knight to Aretha Franklin.

Maurice Ravel’s spectacular orchestration of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” brings the season to a rousing conclusion May 19-20. The concert opens with Jonathan Leshnoff’s brilliant “Starburst” and violinist Karen Gomyo returns to perform Shostakovich’s soulsearching violin concerto.

HARRISBURG SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRAS Gregory Woodbridge will succeed Tara Simoncic as Music Director and Conductor of the Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra, effective July 1. Maestra Simoncic will fulfill all of her duties and responsibilities as both Conductor of the Youth Symphony and Assistant Conductor to Stuart Malina at the HSO through the end of June. At that point she will leave to pursue conducting opportunities in the New York City area and elsewhere. She came to the Youth Symphony at the beginning of the 2010-11 season, following the historic 42-year tenure of Dr. Ronald Schafer.

Friday, February 10th was a spectacular day for the Harrisburg Symphony musicians and many Harrisburg area students as the HSO repeated last year’s successful 100 Musicians Playing. As solo artists and groups of 2, 3, 4 and 5, HSO musicians entertained, educated, and danced with students from pre-school through high school age.

Greg Woodbridge is well known in Central Pennsylvania music circles. Since the fall of 2000 he has been the Director of Orchestras at Hershey High School, where he has built one of the most dynamic music programs at the high school level in the midstate. He is also Conductor of the York Youth Symphony, the Central Pennsylvania Youth Orchestra in State College, and the Pennsylvania Regional Ballet. He also leads the York Symphony in their annual children’s concerts. In the past he has held conducting positions at the Central Pennsylvania Symphony and the Wednesday Club Youth Orchestra.

He also has served as Cover Conductor for Stuart Malina at the Harrisburg Symphony. Greg is a graduate of Penn State, where he earned two Bachelor Degrees - one in Music Education (violin) and another in Piano - and a Masters Degree in Orchestral Conducting.

RISING STARS

The Third Rodney and Lorna Sawatsky Rising Stars Concerto Competition was held at Messiah College on January 20-21. The winner this year is fifteen year old cellist, Julia Rosenbaum, of Potomac, Maryland. Julia is the recipient of a $1,000 cash prize and the opportunity to attend Messiah College on the Vollmer Music Scholarship, valued at more than $60,000. In addition, she will perform Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme with Stuart Malina and the Harrisburg Symphony on November 10-11, 2012.

STUART AND FRIENDS The annual Stuart and Friends chamber music concert will take place on Tuesday evening, March 20, at 7:30 at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center on the HACC campus. This year the Maestro will be joined by HSO musicians Janine Thomas (clarinet), Nicole Diaz (violin), Julius Wirth (viola), Daniel Pereira (cello), and Devin Howell (bass). This year’s program will include the “Kegelstatt” Trio for Clarinet, Viola and Piano by Mozart, Debussy’s Trio for Piano, Violin & Cello, and Schubert’s famed “Trout” Quintet for Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass.
