GETTING TO PALMA DE MALLORCA Palma de Mallorca Airport (airport code: PMI) is located just 8kms from the city centre, and next to the resorts of Playa de Palma and C’an Pastilla. It handles over 25 million passengers each year and is serviced well by both charter, scheduled and lowcost airlines. Even during winter months, the island is easily accessible from most major European airports, although they operate on a reduced service. The ferry terminal and port is situated on the Passeig Marítim opposite the Porto Pi shopping centre, and also welcomes cruise ships and ferries from other Balearic Islands and mainland Spain. Both the port and the airport are serviced by the number 1 and the number 23 EMT city bus, making Palma the ideal destination for a city or sunshine break.

An Introduction from Mayor of Palma de Mallorca, Mateo Isern “Palma has become a 365-day-a-year destination. We are now attracting an increasing number of visitors beyond the summer months who enjoy the city’s modern, lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere. The seductive draw of the island’s beaches and its unique landscape adds to the fact that this dynamic Balearic capital is competitively placed as a destination with a superb cultural, sporting and gastronomic offering. Our partnership with Hotelbeds to produce this Destination Focus guide complements our “Passion for Palma de Mallorca“ initiative which we’ve launched to make this city a stand-out destination in terms of its quality, imagination and differentiation. “Passion for Palma de Mallorca” means passion for everything in Palma from festivals and events to the great range of accommodation options available to those who visit. The campaign is a culmination of the city’s long tradition for tourism, blending the influences and traditions over the centuries and highlights the people who’ve made the city their home. Combined with Hotelbeds’ local expertise, access to key source markets, plus the best in accommodation, we bring you just a taster of what Palma de Mallorca has to offer.” 9

VISITOR TRENDS AND EMERGING SOURCE MARKETS It’s quite a recommendation when Spanish citybreakers have voted for Palma de Mallorca as one of the top Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice destinations for urban tourism. The following data highlights the huge potential Palma de Mallorca has as a key city break destination, while identifying its key source markets, visitor trends, and provides an insight into average stay and accommodation spend in the city. In a survey conducted by the Fundación Turismo Palma de Mallorca 365*, the majority of visitors to the island are German, Spanish and English. All three nationalities have a long history and reputation visiting the island, however the survey also identified several new source markets emerging primarily from the Nordic regions (Danish, Swedish and Norwegian markets), as well as Italy, France and Switzerland indicated as “Others” in the chart below.

WHY SELL PALMA DE MALLORCA?

» As a cultural hot-spot » Diverse and value-for-money dining options » Bustling market places » Small independent and big brand shops » As the sailing capital of Europe » To suit most sporting preferences » Golfing in the sun » An exciting year-round calendar of festivals and events

Palma de Mallorca has evolved over the years to become more than a quick day-trip excursion from holidaymakers visiting the resorts. The strategic decision to create the ‘Passion for Palma de Mallorca’ brand was based on the idea of promoting the city as a 365-day-a-year destination and involves the city’s residents in the poster campaign to advocate their passion for the city. Focusing on the key year round themes; culture, gastronomy, shopping, sailing, sports and golf, here is just a taster of what the city has to offer your clients.

WHY PASSION FOR PALMA DE MALLORCA?

19

PASSION FOR CULTURE

Palma’s “Passion for Culture” is reflected through its historic monuments and talent packed art galleries. Standing magnificently and crowning the bay of Palma, the gothic La Seu Cathedral is undoubtedly the jewel in the Balearic crown. However, there’s no need to wander much further than the maze of Old Town streets to find examples of typical ancient architecture such as the Almudaina Palace, grand town hall, Arab Baths, Bellver Castle and La Lonja. A must-see is the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró museum set in a stunning location in Cala Major. Joan Miró was one of Spain’s most iconic painters who spent time working from these studios, which now form part of the museum. The workshops have been carefully maintained to show the creative atmosphere in which he worked and are where some of his most famous works can be viewed.

FUNDACIÓN TURISMO PALMA DE MALLORCA 365 SURVEY VISITORS TO THE CITY BY NATIONALITY

The museums & art galleries are a reflection of past times and contemporary life on the island. Palma’s first ever hotel, the art deco inspired Gran Hotel is now the popular “La Caixa” Forum. More modern is Es Baluard, Palma’s impressive contemporary museum, which hosts exhibitions by artists who are somehow associated with the islands. It is also an iconic vantage point, where visitors can relax in the terrace café and take in views of the city.

What’s more, the city also hosts a number of exciting cultural art events including the Nit de l’Art (Art night), Palmaphoto (photographic exhibition) and Palma Art Brunch (promoting art galleries).

PASSION FOR GASTRONOMY Palma’s “Passion for Gastronomy” takes our visitors on a culinary tour of the city. From the tiny tapas bars to the elaborate restaurants, almost every nationality of food can be found in the city.

What’s more every year, the city plays host to the gastronomic TaPalma event, whereby 25+ restaurants around the city charge no more than 2€ for a light tapas snack plus drink. Several routes connecting these eateries have been created to crisscross the city, giving visitors an ideal excuse to sightsee and eat along the way. The main objective of the event is not just to get people through the doors of the bars and restaurants, but to find the winning restaurant serving the best tapas dishes.

However, the concept isn’t limited to this one event. Around 12 bars in Palma Old Town join forces to form the “Ruta Martiana” or Tuesday tapas route, where tapas and a drink also costs no more than 2€.

23

PASSION FOR SAILING The unmistakable presence of the multimillion Euro yachts situated alongside Palma’s extensive and expensive harbour-side moorings shows the level at which this city has ‘Passion for Sailing”. Playing host to the Kings Cup sailing regatta confirms the city’s place as a prestigious destination, and propels the city into the international spotlight.

The sailing industry holds one of the biggest employment opportunities on the island, since the budding mariners flock here in search of big bucks and adventure. This is also reflected by the number of sailing schools which promise to transform its students into competent sail crew for their own vessels or with the purpose of finding work.

Other key sailing events include the Superyacht Cup Palma and the International Boat Show. See the events calendar for more information.

25

PASSION FOR SHOPPING

Palma is a shopping paradise with a maze of old town streets, elegant avenues and palatial plazas featuring shopping opportunities whatever the budget. Most visitors to the city head to the big brand outlets on Avenida Jaime III or the boutiques on Passeig del Born. The city has also had its opening hours extended to include Sunday, which is appealing to those visiting on short breaks. Explore the tiny independent shops nestled into the walls of most streets within the old town. Everything from local produce to locally designed clothing can be found alongside Mallorca’s biggest brands such as Camper, and the department store El Corte Ingles.

Alternatively Porto Pi, the island’s indoor shopping centre is situated walking distance from the Port, or a ten minute bus ride from the city centre.

Palma is also home to several market places. Two of the most popular are located in or next to the city centre. The market in Santa Catalina is on a somewhat smaller scale when compared to the Mercat de l’Olivar in the city centre, which boasts entire areas dedicated to fish, meat, fruit and vegetable produce.

SHOPPING FACTS » Shopping hours are usually 09.30-20.00 Monday to Saturday. » Smaller independent shop in Palma normally close for a siesta between 13.30-1600 Monday to Friday, and at around 1400 on Saturday afternoon. » Larger chain stores and supermarkets usually stay open until 2100 and some are open on Sundays.

27

PASSION FOR SPORTS Palma’s “Passion for Sport” extends from the sea and across the city to the glittering lights of the Real Mallorca Football Stadium which hosts matches alternative Saturday afternoons between September and March. However the first and most accessible stop for many sporting enthusiasts is the purposebuilt cycle/skating walkway which extends right around the Bay of Palma. Following a route from El Arenal and Ca’n Pastilla near the airport, right through Palma’s coastal suburbs of Molinar and Portixol, passing the cathedral, and following the Passeig Marítim to the Porto Pi shopping centre before heading south west. It is also the perfect place for a stroll to see the sunrise and sunset.

The coastal waters in Palma are not just limited to sailing. Depending on weather conditions and the time of year, surfers, scuba divers, windsurfers, wake boarders and paddle boarders flock to the beaches right across the city. What’s more, athletes flock to Palma de Mallorca throughout the year to attend the various marathons. The TUI Marathon is the biggest and is held every October offering a variety of race options from a kids run, to Nordic Walking, the 10km, and full 42km marathon event.

Other sporting events scheduled to take place include The Triathlon Internacional Palma de Mallorca, the Iberostar Challenge Ciclista Mallorca (which signals the start of the professional cycling season) as well as the Circuito Carreras 10km road race, 261 Women’s marathon, and the 2nd Palma Sand Run.

29

PASSION FOR GOLF 300 days of brilliant sunshine per year allows visitors to Palma to indulge in their “Passion for Golf” and enthusiasts are spoilt for choice with great playing conditions on some of the island’s most stunning golf courses located just a few minutes’ drive from the city centre.

There are five golf courses in the Palma area. The 18-hole Son Quint golf course is part of the Arabella Golf Mallorca brand along with the golf courses Son Vida and Son Muntaner. They are all situated on the outskirts of the city. Son Quint features the city’s only 9-hole Pitch and Putt course which is open to the public and is a great option for beginners and professionals, or those on a short stay. The 6,200 metre course was built to incorporate views across Palma and the bay, and all have been landscaped with native Mallorcan plants such as olive and pine trees.

In addition, the Golf Park Mallorca Puntir贸 is located a short drive from Palma city centre, and is a magnificent 18-hole course set in 165 acres. It also makes the perfect location for the first or last round of golf of the day.

The Golf Son Gual Mallorca has an equally luxurious offering for golfing enthusiasts set in a picturesque setting, with the Bay of Palma visible from the greens.

Playa de Palma lies just a few minutes from the airport terminal and is popular with German visitors as well as Spanish nationals, with many restaurants and bars catering accordingly. It’s also home to one of the city’s biggest attractions – Palma Aquarium. In recent years, the 5 km of golden sands have become an attractive option for many seeking a great seaside location with close proximity to Palma city centre. It is also the resort which enjoys picture perfect sunsets across the bay. Ciutat Jardí or “city garden” is also just a few minutes by bus or car from Palma city centre, and has its own beach and plethora of restaurants and terrace cafes. The area is more residential with a traditionally Mallorcan feel since the former fishermens’ cottages have been renovated into prime real estate.

PALMA DE MALLORCA

The old town or “Casco Antiguo” is Palma’s historic quarter. It separates itself from the rest of the city quite dramatically, since its winding streets and squares house many of the ancient sights in the city. The area offers its visitors a slice of real Mallorcan life, where visitors find themselves immediately immersed into bustling city centre life with shops, bars and restaurants on their hotel doorstep. Many of the other hotels are located close to the Passeig Marítim, the waterfront area which harbours the multi-million yachts and where celebrities and statesmen can be spotted during the summer months. It is also the place to go to experience Palma’s buzzing nightlife.
