EDUCATION SESSIONS KEEPING THE AGING BRAIN YOUNG & LOWERING RISK FOR ALZHEIMER’S & DEMENTIA Presenter: Dr. Marc Milstein, University of California Los Angeles There is so much more to keeping your brain in tip-top shape and lowering your risk for dementia than crossword puzzles, brain games and Sudoku. Breakthrough research is uncovering the surprising key actionable steps to boost your brain and keep it working better, longer. The statistics are staggering. 47 million people have dementia worldwide, and that number is expected to skyrocket to 115 million people by 2050. Recent studies estimate that about a third of dementia is preventable if actionable steps are taken. Hear the scoop on scientifically valid, actionable tips to optimize your brain health and what is just myth, hype and marketing. Utilize the latest science to empower you to keep your brain young. OIG, CMS, OMG! Presenters: Andrea DeLand, HealthCap & John Paul Hessburg, The Kitch Firm Oversight by CMS, OIG, AG’s, and various other governmental agencies has never been greater. This session will review the development of governmental oversight with an emphasis on the False Claims Act, and steps providers can take to enhance compliance and avoid risk. GROUNDBREAKING ROOT CAUSE INSIGHTS OF FALLS FOR RESIDENTS WITH DEMENTIA VIA ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Presenter: Tom Bang, SafelyYou Never before have we been able to review and witness unseen falls! This session goes far beyond typical fall-related discussions. We will review groundbreaking data generated from observing thousands of falls. This data has been collected from more than fifty senior living communities and skilled nursing facilities. Clinicians, care staff, occupational and physical therapists have been meeting routinely throughout the past two years to evaluate, analyze and identify root causes for thousands of fall events. Additional data will be shared revealing opportunities to enhance staff training for interactions with residents “found on floor.” PDPM: TRENDS & PREDICTIONS POST IMPLEMENTATION Presenters: Daniel Ciolek, American Health Care Association and Robin Hillier, Welcome Nursing Home / RLH Consulting The October 1, 2019 implementation of the new prospective payment system called the Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM) dramatically changed the focus of care from the amount of care delivery to the patient characteristics that drive health care resource use and quality outcomes. This session will focus on educating the participant about specific patient characteristics and quality measures that have a dramatically increased importance when planning, documenting, and coding resident care that will be closely monitored. Failure to understand the new risks associated with this much more complex payment model and how it aligns with SNF value-based payment adjustments and quality reporting program adjustments as well as the recently implemented targeted probe and educate audit program by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) could have significant impacts on SNF revenues and quality of care delivery if not closely monitored and adjusted. Daniel and Robin will highlight lessons-learned from the implementation to-date, describe challenges with the implementation process, highlight what CMS is monitoring, and speculate where the PDPM payment model is heading. 7

EDUCATION SESSIONS POLYPHARMACY IN THE ASSISTED LIVING SETTING: PART 1 & PART 2 Presenter: Barb Bancroft, CPP Associates Inc. Polypharmacy is a common practice in the LTC community. Join Barb Bancroft for this fascinating lecture that will have you rethinking the long list of drugs that your resident is currently taking. Examples of the “stacking effect” will be used to demonstrate how multiple drugs with the same side effects can cause significant problems in the resident (hyperkalemia, bleeding, lactic acidosis). Learn how to identify potentially problematic combinations of drugs. I-SNP/D-SNP: DEEPER DIVE Presenter: Nisha Hammel, American Health Care Association CMS continues to push shared financial risk and expanded value based transformation. A rapidly growing number of SNFs and AL organizations are transforming their businesses, and the care their residents receive, through the formation of Special Needs Plans, particularly Institutional Special Needs Plans (I-SNPs). Attend this session to gain an understanding of the key steps and components to health plan development along with the opportunities and challenges in developing a provider owned health plan. This session is a follow-up to Nisha’s session from the 2019 HCAM/MCAL Annual Convention providing additional insights and strategies. THE ECONOMIC AND REVENUE OUTLOOK FOR MICHIGAN Presenter: Jeff Guilfoyle, Michigan Department of Treasury This presentation will provide an overview of the national and state economies. Join Jeff Guilfoyle, Chief Deputy Treasurer of the State of Michigan to discuss economic strengths and weaknesses in the state, as well as the risk of a recession in the next couple of years. Michigan’s current expansion will be put in context with the downturn that occurred from 2001 to 2009. The presentation will also discuss what this means for state revenues, which in turn are an important driver of the state’s budget. WASHINGTON, DC UPDATE: A 2020 OUTLOOK Presenter: Clif Porter, American Health Care Association / National Center for Assisted Living Is the future of long-term care constantly on the minds of your leadership team? Workforce challenges, shortage of qualified staff, regulatory oversight, a new payment model, aging baby boomers demanding innovative service plans, and person-centered care are the top challenges today. What is the state of the profession? In this session, you will receive the latest information on what’s happening nationally that will impact both nursing facilities and assisted living communities. Topics for discussion include industry trends, anticipated changes, legislative agendas, financial challenges, regulatory issues, and more!

EDUCATION SESSIONS REIMBURSEMENT UPDATE Presenter: Betsy Rust, Plante Moran This session will look at the changes in current and future Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement systems. Medicare on October 1, 2019 transitioned to the new system called Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM). We will examine the impact of this new system on facility operations, therapy contracts and payments for Medicare services along with other Medicare concerns with sequestration and Value Based Purchasing. Medicaid topics will include the latest on the Quality Measure Initiative (QMI), audit and cost reporting timelines enacted with PA 612 of 2018 and related audit issues. The session will also discuss the impact of managed care on facility operations and payments from the Medicare Advantage, Healthy Michigan and MI Health Link programs. STRATEGICALLY TACKLING RISING DEVELOPMENT COSTS Presenters: Eric Dumont, Plante Moran Living Forward, Andrew McLeod, GMB Architecture, & John Parker, EV Construction Through examination of past experiences, case studies, and review of proven strategies, we will discuss how to minimize and plan for rising development cost during project planning. This session will focus on a lively discussion around proactively planning for rising development costs, properly structuring a project team, conducting financial feasibility tests, developing timelines, and consideration of early partnerships. MAKING IT ACTIONABLE: CYBER SECURITY FOR LONG TERM CARE FACILITIES Presenter: Don Glidewell, Think Anew LLC Within this discussion, participants will examine the relative “maturity” of the long-term care profession’s technological resources, when compared to those of other industries. We are entering a new chapter, and the digital divide between organizations who are adequately equipped to communicate with confidence and those which cannot keep up will be a sticking point of differentiation. Reporting and compliance has become electronic across federal and state agencies. Insurers and payors increasingly require online engagement with claims processing, and remote collaboration between clinical partners are vitally necessary to remain competitive. Cost-effective, secure solutions may be few and far between, but are available for the discerning leader.
