Biography for State Senator Jim Ananich PROFESSIONAL Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich has served in the Michigan Senate since 2013, when he won a special election to fill the 27th Senate District seat. He is now in his third term (second full term) in the Senate. Ananich was elected Senate Minority Leader by his peers following his reelection to the Senate in 2014, and again in 2018. He is the first to be elected the leader of a Senate caucus more than once in the era of term limits. Prior to his inaugural term in the Senate, Ananich represented portions of Flint and Genesee County for one full term and one partial term in the Michigan House of Representatives. He also served four years on the Flint City Council, including one year as its president. During his tenure in the legislature, Ananich has been at the forefront of addressing the Flint Water Crisis. He continues to push for answers and champion long-term solutions to the critical infrastructure, health and economic needs the community now faces. Ananich led efforts to help create good-paying jobs, improve workforce development, prevent scrap metal theft and keep unused prescription drugs off the streets. His bill to make Flint a promise zone was signed into law in 2017, awarding Flint students the opportunity to attend college or trade school tuition-free. He is a former civics and government teacher at Carman-Ainsworth and Flint Community Schools and also worked as an education coordinator for Priority Children, where he helped train Genesee County youth to secure internships and jobs. 4
EDUCATION Ananich graduated from Flint Central High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in political economics from Michigan State University, as well as a secondary education certificate in social studies. He also earned a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Michigan-Flint. PERSONAL Jim lives in Flint with his wife and son, Andrea and Jacob, as well as their dog, Maddie. Andrea is a high school social studies teacher and is involved in the League of Women Voters, Habitat for Humanity and several other local groups. Biography for State Senator John Bizon PROFESSIONAL In November 2018, residents of Michigan’s 19th Senate District elected Sen. Dr. John Bizon, RBattle Creek, to the state Senate, representing Barry, Calhoun and Ionia counties. Prior to joining the Senate, Bizon served four years in the Michigan House of Representatives, representing the 62nd District. Dr. Bizon is an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor) in Battle Creek who’s been in medical practice for more than 40 years. He is a military veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force, eventually obtaining the rank of lieutenant colonel. John also is a longtime volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America and past president of the Calhoun County Medical Society, and he served as longstanding chair of the legislative committee at the county medical society and on the Battle Creek Health System (now Bronson Battle Creek) medical staff, where he held several medical staff leadership and quality improvement positions. He has served the Michigan State Medical Society in several capacities, culminating in service as president. EDUCATION Dr. Bizon earned a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and a medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine. His residency took place at the U.S. Air Force Wilford Hall Medical Center in Texas. PERSONAL John and his wife, Deborah, have been married for 45 years and together have four adult children and six grandchildren.

Chang led the way on air quality protection, education, criminal justice reforms, improving economic opportunities, and affordable, safe drinking water. She passed bipartisan legislation on a range of issues including female genital mutilation, nitrous oxide “whip-its”, reentry services for wrongfully convicted individuals who were exonerated, and more. She quickly earned her colleagues’ respect and was named chair of the Progressive Women’s Caucus in her second term. She also served on the leadership team for the House Democratic Caucus both terms and was a co-founder of the Asian Pacific American Legislative Caucus. Sen. Stephanie Chang, the first Asian American woman to be elected to the Michigan Legislature, worked as a community organizer in Detroit for nearly a decade before serving two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives. She served as state director for NextGen Climate Michigan, alumni engagement and evaluation coordinator for the Center for Progressive Leadership in Michigan, deputy director for the Campaign for Justice and as an organizer for Michigan United/One United Michigan. She also worked as a community engagement coordinator for the James and Grace Lee Boggs School and assistant to Grace Lee Boggs, an activist, writer, and speaker. The senator also is a co-founder and past president of Asian and Pacific Islander American VoteMichigan, and she served as a mentor with the Detroit Asian Youth Project.

Biography for State Senator Curtis Hertel, Jr. PROFESSIONAL Hertel previously served as Minority Vice-Chair of the Senate Committees for Health Policy, Commerce, Regulatory Reform, Banking and Financial Institutions, and the Appropriations SubCommittee for Higher Education. He has also served as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Appropriations Sub-Committee for the Department of Health and Human Services, Appropriations Sub-Committee for Capital Outlay, and the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules. Sen. Curtis Hertel Jr. has a long history of fighting for issues that matter most to Michigan’s families. He was elected to the Ingham County Commission at the age of 22, where he championed the county’s living wage ordinance and led the charge for the Ingham County Health Plan, which became a model around the country. As the county’s Register of Deeds, he fought for people who had fallen victim to predatory lending and foreclosure scams, and helped shield residents from foreclosure fraud. In the state Senate, Hertel is a leader in the fight against the epidemic of sexual assault, specifically on our college campuses. He is working to change the culture by advocating for required education on affirmative consent, and has made headway to include affirmative consent as part of a multifaceted solution. He has also successfully ushered through legislation that paved the way to a quicker and more viable process for organ donations, cracked down on predatory mailings and removed the derogatory terminology of ‘crippled children’ from our state’s laws. Additionally, Hertel worked to improve access and affordability to health care for those who need it most, and was instrumental getting part of the state budget allocated to the First Responders Presumed Coverage Fund. 10
EDUCATION Curtis Hertel Jr. is a graduate of Michigan State University’s James Madison College. PERSONAL He and his wife, Elizabeth, the direct of MDHHS, live in East Lansing with their four children, CJ, Nathan, Hailey and Jack, and their dog, Samson.

Biography for State Senator Aric Nesbitt PROFESSIONAL In 2010, Nesbitt was elected to represent Van Buren County and part of Allegan County in the Michigan House of Representatives. He served three terms in the state House, achieving results for hardworking taxpayers by balancing budgets and reducing debt, lowering the tax burden, eliminating thousands of regulations, and defending our West Michigan values. Nesbitt served as the House Majority Floor Leader and chair of the House Committee on Energy and Technology. He also served as a member of Gov. Rick Snyder’s cabinet, managing an agency that generates nearly $1 billion annually for public education. In 2018, Nesbitt was elected to the state Senate to represent the people of Allegan and Van Buren Counties, along with Gaines Township and the city of Kentwood in Kent County. He passed into law Senate Bill 1, which will significantly lower auto insurance rates by providing drivers choices, stopping price gouging, and cracking down on fraud and lawsuit abuse. Additionally, Senator Nesbitt successfully led the charge to stop Governor Whitmer’s massive tax increases on drivers and small businesses. Nesbitt currently serves as Senate President Pro Tempore and chairs the Senate Committees on Regulatory Reform and Advice & Consent, along with the Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Appropriations subcommittee. He also serves a Vice-Chair of the Joint Select Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic where the objective is to review the state’s response and offer recommendations.

As a sportsman, Nesbitt is a member of the National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited and South Haven Steelheaders. He will continue to support efforts to prevent Asian Carp from entering our Great Lakes. Nesbitt is also the son of a Vietnam War veteran, and is a strong supporter of our nation’s veterans. EDUCATION Senator Nesbit earned an economics degree from Hillsdale College, later earning a master’s in international business. He received the “Distinguished Alumnus” award from Hillsdale for his work as a conservative reformer. PERSONAL The senator currently lives in Lawton, with his wife Trisha and daughter Catherine, near the family farm. Biography for State Senator Rick Outman PROFESSIONAL In 2018, Outman was elected to represent the 33rd state Senate District, which includes the counties of Clare, Gratiot, Isabella, Mecosta and Montcalm. Outman is a veteran of the United States Army, and the National Guard 1073rd in Greenville. His professional experience includes working as the owner of Outman Excavating. Outman was elected as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives in 2010 and represented the 70th District until 2016, when term limits prevented him from seeking another term. In that time, Outman chaired the Michigan Capitol Committee and was a member of House Committees on Agriculture, Commerce, Elections and Ethics, Energy and Technology and Families, Children and Seniors. He also is an active member of many organizations, including the National Rifle Association, Right to Life of Michigan, Six Lakes Chamber of Commerce, Montcalm County Farm Bureau and is a member of the Hough-Pontius #3701 VFW post in Lakeview. He was involved in area schools, assisting with the Lakeview Schools wrestling teams and as tournament director for Lakeview Freestyle Club. EDUCATION Sen. Biography for State Senator Sylvia Santana PROFESSIONAL Before joining the state Senate, Sylvia Santana served one term in the Michigan House of Representatives. Santana has extensive professional experience working in the financial industry — more than 15 years. It is her passion to ensure small-business owners are equipped with the right tools to grow and create jobs. She worked to identify credit facilities and other sources of funding available to small businesses in efforts to achieve economic empowerment for local communities. She was a trusted resource to local business owners guiding them through the lending process and vetting of financial options to fund their business ideas. Santana has been an active member in her community for more than a decade. She created and led the neighborhood block club. Additionally, she filled the role of finance director and, later, as president of the Warrendale Community Organization. The senator has been a steadfast champion of policies that keep communities safe, provide children with a good education to compete globally, and grow local businesses supporting the community. EDUCATION Santana majored in finance at Eastern Michigan University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business. PERSONAL She and her husband, Harvey, reside in Warrendale. 16

Biography for State Senator Mike Shirkey PROFESSIONAL In November 2014, residents of Michigan’s 16th Senate District first elected Sen. Mike Shirkey, RClarklake, to the state Senate. Shirkey’s Republican colleagues elected Mike to serve as Senate majority leader for his second term, beginning January 2019. Shirkey has served as chair of the Senate Health Policy and Michigan Competitiveness committees, and he currently chairs the Government Operations Committee. Prior to joining the Senate, Shirkey served four years in the Michigan House of Representatives, representing the 65th District. Shirkey is the founder and owner of Orbitform, a leading engineering company that manufactures forming, fastening, joining and assembly equipment for a wide range of industries and applications. The company provides world-class prototype engineering services for assembly of parts and specialized forming and fastening. Mike also worked for General Motors in various management and engineering roles for 13 years. Mike served on the Columbia Central School Board in the 1980s and 1990s. Shirkey also is the past board chair of Allegiance Health System. EDUCATION Shirkey earned a bachelor’s degree from General Motors Institute (GMI) in 1978 and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1979.

Biography for State Senator Jim Stamas PROFESSIONAL Sen. Jim Stamas was elected to the Michigan Senate in 2014 and re-elected in 2018. Stamas serves as chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Stamas is the owner and former general manager of Pizza Sam’s, the eatery in Midland the Stamas family has owned for more than 50 years. Prior to running the family business, Stamas was selfemployed as a realtor and was project manager at Case Systems. Before serving in the Senate, Stamas served three terms as state Representative and two terms as Midland County commissioner. He also was a Midland Township trustee from 1997-2004 and has served on the boards of the Midland Downtown Development Authority, Midland Downtown Business Association and Midland County Planning Commission. Stamas served his country honorably in both the U.S. Army and the Michigan National Guard. As a member of the Michigan House of Representative, in recognition of Jim’s effectiveness and leadership, his colleagues elected him Majority Floor Leader for the 96th and 97th Legislatures. As Majority Floor Leader, Stamas was charged with setting the overall agenda and direction for the House of Representatives. EDUCATION Stamas holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Northwood University and an associate degree in business management from Delta College. Biography for State Senator Curt Vanderwall PROFESSIONAL Prior to joining the Senate, VanderWall served two years in the Michigan House of Representatives, representing the 101st District. VanderWall is the owner of Turf Care Mole Man of Ludington. Before that, he worked with Eberhard foods and Prevo’s Family Market for much of his adult life. He also served on the board of Old Kent Bank as well as the Mason County Growth Alliance Board, Northern Michigan Counties Association and the Mason County Housing Board. Before being elected to the Michigan House, VanderWall served as commissioner and chairman for the Mason County Board of Commissioners. He also served on the Western Michigan Fair Association for six years, was district chair for MSU Extension and served on boards for the United Way of Mason County. Curt is currently chair of the Women’s Jericho House Board. EDUCATION Rep. VanderWall completed courses at Grand Rapids Junior College for two years before moving on to the workforce. Biography for State Representative Thomas Albert PROFESSIONAL State Representative Thomas Albert was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2016. He represents the 86th District. Upon graduation from the University of Michigan, Thomas was commissioned as a Marine Corps Officer. He spent the next year attending training schools in order to enter the operational forces. In 2009, Thomas deployed to Iraq as an advisor to the Iraqi Army in the Anbar Province. After leaving active duty, he continued to serve as a reservist until 2013. After completing his MBA in 2013, Thomas worked as an investor for the State of Michigan Retirement Systems. Biography for State Representative Joe Tate PROFESSIONAL State Rep. Joe Tate is serving his second term representing Michigan’s 2 nd House District. Tate decided to run for this office as a part of his deep and lifelong commitment to public service. The value of service was taught to him through his parents – a teacher in the Detroit public school system, and a Detroit firefighter. His life has been shaped by teamwork, commitment, and community. In one of the most important decisions of his life, Joe left a career in athletics and commissioned as an Infantry Officer in the United States Marine Corps. He deployed twice to Afghanistan, first as a Platoon Commander and then as a Company Executive Officer, where he oversaw the day-to-day operations of hundreds of Marines and Sailors. Two of his fondest memories were living and working with other members of his unit, providing support for small development projects to farmers living in Southern Afghanistan. And it was during his deployments where he learned the success of a mission is best accomplished by prioritizing the welfare of fellow troops and the community. As a teenager, Tate earned a scholarship to play football at Michigan State University before joining the National Football League. After the N.F.L., he went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps, deploying twice to Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. EDUCATION After high school, Joe earned an athletic scholarship to play football at Michigan State University (MSU). After graduating from MSU with a degree in public policy, Joe moved on to the National Football League (NFL) where he spent two years playing for three teams (Jacksonville Jaguars, St. Louis Rams, and Atlanta Falcons). After an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, he earned both an M.B.A. and a Master of Science in environmental policy and planning from the University of 40

Mary Whiteford was first elected to serve the 80th District in the Michigan House of Representatives in March 2016. Whiteford worked in a pediatric neurosurgery unit before working in a pediatric emergency unit. In 1997 she started an accounting business with her husband, Kevin. They now run their own financial planning firm. Whiteford was an active volunteer in her children’s schools, ran homeowner associations, was appointed to city committees and was appointed to the Michigan Women’s Commission where she worked on raising human trafficking awareness. EDUCATION Whiteford earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Northern Illinois University. PERSONAL Rep. Whiteford grew up in the Midwest, in the small town of Cary, Illinois and is the oldest of four children. She met her husband, Kevin, in college and they have three adult children and two grandchildren. Whiteford and her husband live in Casco Township.
