WELCOME

Ask the Administration....

What do you like to do outside your life at the College? “I like to work with my hands. I am a do-it-yourself person, working around the house on projects, outside on the yard or house. I also enjoy college sports-Kansas State, Nebraska, and, of course, the Blue Dragons. I like to read--mostly fiction, investment information, and some non-fiction. Spending time with Tracey my wife, going to church, and walking our dog Jada.” - Dr. Carter File, President “I like to spend time with friends and family. It’s enjoyable when we all can get together. I enjoy outdoor activities and the chance to get out in nature. I like developing software and learning new technology that makes quality of life better for people. When I’m not engrossed in technology, I like to work on remodeling projects around the house.” - Loren Morris Chief Information Officer

“Spend time in my flower beds and garden...it is very relaxing and read lots of books. Definitely enjoy spending time with my family and friends.” - Cindy Keast Executive Director, Endowment Association

CAMPUS UPDATES When Bill Wyer, owner/operator of Sidney’s Hairdressing College, decided it was time to retire, the potential was there for a void in the community of a long-standing business and educational opportunity. Because Hutchinson Community College had enjoyed a long-standing agreement with Sidney’s, it provided a natural opportunity for the College to launch its own Cosmetology program. With formal approval granted by the Kansas Board of Cosmetology, the Kansas Board of Regents and the Higher Learning Commission, Hutchinson Community College classes beginning in January 2017.

The Hutchinson Community College livestock judging team returned home from the prestigious North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, KY as the Reserve Champion Team Overall. In addition, four students earned top 15 honors overall. The Blue Dragons were represented by team members Shilo Schaake (Westmoreland, KS), Taylor Gall (Clarkson, NE), Kyle Cavalli (Lincoln, KS), Mitchell Layfield (Tifton, GA), Casey Bradshaw (Twin Falls, ID), Mindy Cook (Newark, DE) and Megan Homolka (Swanton, NE). The HutchCC agricultural team is coached by instructor of agriculture and Livestock Judging coach Ben Williams. This past June, Hutchinson Community College sent five students to the National SkillsUSA Contest in Louisville, KY and all five earned top ten finishes in their respective competitions, including a national gold medal. Those qualifying for this honor were Shelby Horton (Colton, CA) competing in the Photography contest, Nick White (Salina) and Tyler Sissick (Hugoton) in Mechatronics, and the team of Heather Sykes (Mt. Hope) and Daniel DeBolt (Wichita) competing in Web Design. The Mechatronics team of Nick White and Tyler Sissick won a national gold medal. ALUMNI FEATURE

Opal Albright took up the game of golf at an age when many people are taking their last swings. But age has always been nothing more than a number to Opal. There is, however, one significant number Opal shares with Hutchinson Community College – 1928. The retired educator is the only known surviving member of the College’s inaugural class. Hutchinson Junior College, as it was then known, opened in 1928 with 187 students, 10 sophomores and 177 freshmen. Opal spent three semesters at Hutch before transferring to Southwestern College in Winfield to complete her studies. She recalls many fond memories of her time as a Blue Dragon, including playing an active role in the students’ selection of scarlet and blue as the school colors and the Dragon as the school mascot. Opal was a member of the Dragonettes, a pep club organized for the purpose of promoting college sports and other college activities. A memory that remains with Opal today is a scoreless tie played in a rainstorm on October 18, 1928 against the Chilocco Indians. Following graduation Opal started her teaching career at a small country school nine miles west of Pretty Prairie with a total of nine students covering multiple grades. First year

pay was $5.00/day, or $100.00/month for the eight month school year. Due to teaching several grades and each of the subjects for that grade, the students, and Opal, had to learn to adapt quickly as each class lasted only eight minutes. Opal taught for five years before taking a hiatus to get married in 1936 followed by the birth of her son in 1938. Returning to the classroom in 1946, Opal spent the next 31 years in education before retiring in 1977. It was then she took up golf, a love affair that lasted until just shy of her 100th birthday. Today Opal spends her days at Pretty Prairie’s Prairie Sunset Home. There are even two of her former students who are fellow residents of the home. When asked what advice she would give to current Blue Dragon students today, Opal smiled and called on her days on the golf course - “Just keep swingin’”.

ATHLETIC UPDATES

Hutchinson will play host to another National Junior College Athletic Association championship sporting event beginning in 2017. The NJCAA board of directors has awarded the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship to Hutchinson for three years – November 2017 through November 2019. The Championship will be in the Sports Arena – which is undergoing $29.5 million in renovations after voters approved a sales tax increase to fund the project – where the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Championship has been held for decades.

The renovation of the Hutchinson Sports Arena has passed the 60% mark on its way to a planned completion in the spring of 2017. To date, the project has experienced a few unforeseen challenges, primarily related to flooring around the perimeter of the existing facility and in the new practice gyms, but the project remains on track for primary completion in time for the NJCAA Men’s National Basketball Championship. Despite some challenges, the Blue Dragons have completed a successful volleyball season and begun their men’s and women’s basketball seasons utilizing the Arena.

Both the Blue Dragon Men’s and Women’s basketball teams enter the Christmas break with national rankings. The second-ranked men are undefeated at 13-0 and lead the Jayhawk Conference. The women are ranked eighth with a 10-1 record. Both teams will return to action in the Sports Arena January 4 as the first of four home games in January. Mark Saturday, February 4 on your calendar for the annual Pink Out Night with all proceeds going to support cancer research and awareness. A full schedule for Blue Dragon athletics can be found at www.bluedragonsports.com.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Dillon Lecture Series Turns 35 Barbara Peirce and her husband Ken had been donor members of the Landon Lecture Series at Kansas State University, where patron’s fees provided funding to bring noted speakers to campus, and students would be admitted at no charge. In 1981, Barbara, who was then a part-time Kansas History instructor at Hutchinson Community College, was interested in establishing a lecture series at HutchCC and naming it in honor of Ray and Stella Dillon, long-time Hutchinson residents, in recognition of their contributions to the community and their support of young people.

Tze, that learning is the key to enlightenment.

Barbara enlisted the help of her friend Jeanette Mull and the pair presented the plan to Dr. Ed Berger, then the Dean of Continuing Education at HutchCC. With the initial financial support of the Ray and Stella Dillon Foundation, and additional funding from friends who became the first patrons, the two were able to present the plan to the HutchCC Board of Trustees in November of 1981. Thus, the Ray and Stella Dillon Lecture Series was born, with a motto from the teachings of Chinese philosopher Kuan-

To date more than 140 speakers from all walks of life have addressed audiences as part of the Ray and Stella Dillon Lecture Series. In honor of the Series’ 35th birthday, a survey was conducted to select the top lectures to date. The top five vote-getters were Dr. Ben Carson (2004), Dr. Beck Weathers (2016), Maya Angelou (1992), David Garibaldi (2016) and Captain Richard Phillips (2014).

The first Dillon Lecturer was former Iranian hostage Richard Morefield, who addressed a crowd of more than 2,000 people in the Hutchinson Sports Arena on March 29, 1982. In the review of the lecture, The Hutchinson News said: “The triumph is now part of the perfect inaugural in Hutchinson, in which the virtues of people helping people can be continually highlighted and stimulated. The Ray and Stella Dillon Lecture Series opens as a smashing success.”
